New mural for Battle River Treaty 6 building

Come Friday, the back wall of the Battle River Treaty 6 Health Centre building will feature new artwork.

Azby Whitecalf, from Sweetgrass First Nation, and Taylor Starchief, from Mosquito First Nation, are painting a mural with themes from Aboriginal art.

“I thought this was a very good opportunity to help shed light on the Aboriginal community here in North Battleford,” Whitecalf said.

Patricia Whitecalf-Ironstand, executive director of the health centre, said the mural is intended to “improve the overall look of the wall.”

“Hopefully it’ll encourage pedestrian traffic to view the artwork and to generate civic pride,” Whitecalf-Ironstand said.

Health Centre is a First Nations owned and operated health services organization governed by a board made up of chiefs from Little Pine, Poundmaker, Lucky Man, Mosquito, Moosomin, Red Pheasant and Sweetgrass First Nations.

The mural is produced in partnership with Discovery Co-op’s Communities in Full Colour program.

Azby Whitecalf is a second-year student at the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary, while Starchief plans to attend Saskatchewan Polytechnic in Saskatoon.

“I want to make comic books that educate aboriginal youth and non-aboriginal youth about what Plains Cree culture is,” Whitecalf said.

Along with painting, Starchief has experience with Native beadwork and powwow outfits through his grandfather, Chief

Daniel Starchief of Mosquito First Nation.

The gig involved a meeting with elders to discuss what the mural would look like. The artists began the mural last Monday, and plan to finish Friday, Aug. 25.

Whitecalf said the right side of the mural depicts a “person praying, and within the smoke are animals that are involved within our spirituality, butterfly, trout, wolves, deer, eagle and bison.”

Whitecalf said the more sacred animals feature within the left side of the smoke.

Starchief’s artistic reference is End of the Trail, an image especially wellknown in the U.S., which Starchief said “represents the end of hope for that way of living.”

“I was really interested when I looked it up,” Starchief said. “I like old Native stories like that.”

SHNB patient missing Staff At 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Battlefords RCMP announced they are seeking the public’s assistance in locating a missing 24-yearold man who walked away from the Saskatchewan Hospital mental health facility in North Battleford on Saturday, Aug. 19, at approximately 10 p.m.

Carlin Bear is a committed patient at the Saskatchewan Hospital and did not return from a 30-minute absence on the hospital grounds. He was last seen at the hospital.

Bear is from the Big River First Nation.

Theft prevention seminar coming to Chamber of Commerce Staff

A seminar is coming to the Battlefords Chamber of Commerce on retail theft prevention.

The event is being held Wednesday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. in the Balych Mural Meeting Room at the Chamber of Commerce building on the junction of Highways 16 and 40 in North Battleford.

There will be three representatives there to give presentations. Sgt. Chris Stephens of Battlefords RCMP will be there to provide the perspective of law enforcement on the issue.

Lawyer Eldon Lindgren of the Matrix Law Group

will be there to give the legal perspective, and Harris Sutherland of Gold Eagle Casino will be there to provide tips and tricks for how to deal with the issue.

The meeting is being organized by the chamber and by local businesses in response to concerns from a number of local merchants and store proprietors about the amount of shoplifting that goes on in the city.

The meeting is designed to be informational in nature and a chance for those attending to meet and network with other retailers to learn how to protect their businesses from thefts.

6 to 6: Weekly RCMP round-up Staff Police received a total of 185 calls from between 6 a.m. on Aug. 15, to 6 a.m. on Aug. 18, including the following: On Aug. 15 at 8:17 a.m., RCMP received a report of a 2004 Blue F150 Super Crew with the Saskatchewan license plate 134KSY stolen from a rural area north of North Battleford.

At 8:59 p.m., two vehicles collided on Territorial Drive. A Ford Focus, operated by a 46-year-old female driver from Camrose collided with the rear end of a GMC Sierra, driven by a local 16-year-old male.

Ambulance and Fire attended to the scene, and injuries were undetermined.

The incident is still under investigation.

A 16-year-old male went to the Battlefords Union Hospital with three minor stab wounds Tuesday evening. The police attended the scene at 9:26 p.m. The police report stated the male was uncooperative with police and wouldn’t offer information.

The matter was still under investigation as of Thursday morning.

Sometime during the night of Aug. 15 and 16, a grey Nissan Xterra’s tires were slashed and windshield smashed. The vehicle was located at the 1800 block of 92nd Street.

Later during day, a Ford

Freestyle minivan was stolen from the 1200 block of 96th Street. Police found the stolen vehicle in the Riverview Subdivision.

Keys had been left in the vehicle.

Sometime during the night of Aug. 16-17, unknown individuals vandalized the radar device along the road between North Battleford and Battleford.

The matter is still under investigation.

While the owner of a 2016 Dodge Ram was on vacation, his truck was stolen. Upon return, say RCMP, the owner noticed his vehicle being driven past his residence and stopping nearby. The owner approached the vehicle, and four to six youth stood around it. The owner asked

for his keys, and they assaulted him. Another youth came out of a residence wielding two machetes, according to the police report. The youth then left in the truck. The owner suffered minor injuries.

Police request that the public call them rather than approaching people committing potentially criminal acts.

Parade police, chill out Dear Editor I don’t usually write about happenings in North Battleford. But I have to comment on the parade. There was the usual run of the mill floats. But in my opinion the princesses stole the show. Of course there were delays but that was because the princesses were so popular and the little kids recognized them and wanted to hug them and the beautiful princesses hugged them back.

Is the Battlefords parade supposed to be a fun thing or a place where advertising is on schedule. I think the parade police were way out of line. They should just chill out. That’s one man’s opinion.

“Do unto Crown Corporations whatsoever will destroy them!”

This government was despised in all the land so the people rose up and drove the DEVINE leader and his party out of power.

NEVER AGAIN WOULD THE PROGRESSIVE CONSERVATIVE PARTY BE ELECTED IN SASKATCHEWAN! Then from the ashes there arose the Sask Party, with promises of reduced taxes and balanced budgets. They breathed not a word of the DEVINE roots from which they came.

Their leader, Bradley John Wall, said to his followers: “Speak not of privatization but rather prosperity!”

“Speak not of mounting debt but rather megaprojects!”

There was no prophecy of doom for the Crown Corporations.

It came to pass that the people began to trust.

Like the snake in the garden, Bradley John Wall deceived the people with hidden agendas and false promises.

On March 22, 2017 it was revealed that Bradley John Wall believed the DEVINE leader. Indeed he spent the people’s money and his friends did prosper! Indeed he would do unto Crown Corporations whatsoever would destroy them!

Now Bradley John Wall came to the end of his career.

There stood in his path the Keeper of the Gate who asked him, “What have you done with the life you were given?”

“I was Leader in all the Land “ he replied.

The Keeper of the Gate declared: “It is written that you used your power to deceive the people. You tore open the fabric and soul of the land.

Beach wheelchairs: five more to be available to provincial parks

Staff In an attempt to make beaches in provincial parks more accessible for the mobility impaired, the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport has purchased five beach accessible wheelchairs.

“Everyone deserves to have access to our beautiful beaches and lakes,” said Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Ken Cheveldayoff in a press release. “Our visitors have a diverse range of needs and the addition of these beach wheelchairs mean that more people can enjoy exactly what makes our parks so special.”

The ministry bought five wheelchairs in July to gauge interest, and the press release stated the wheelchairs were popular.

The wheelchairs are made of a lightweight aluminum frame and have three buoyant tires. They can travel over sand and go into one foot of water, and are free at provincial parks on a

Teams from all over Saskatchewan gathered under the lights of Beaver Lions Stadium in support of the Battlefords Mission Clubs fundraising efforts for their next building project in Kenya 2019. The tournament hosted a home run derby for men and woman. Corrissa Iron and Jason Richter won the cash prize for their divisions. The Redskins won the A side championship followed by A side runner up Saulteaux. The B side title went to 1 Hit Wonders and B side runner up to Pitch Slap. Canoe Lake took home the C side prize and Good Times placed C side Runner up. The Mission Club thanks all players and volunteers for an excellent weekend.

Friday night destruction at the fair As you may recall from my most recent First Person Exploits into the Unknown from a month ago, I’m a diehard racing fan and will go out of my way to travel somewhere to catch a race.

For example, this past weekend saw a triple header of World of Outlaws sprint car series races in North Dakota with events in Grand Forks, Fargo and Minot taking place over the course of three nights.

Plus, this coming Saturday, the series will be making a stop in Billings, Montana, so I was really tempted to make the nearly nine-hour drive south to see that event.

However, sources then informed this reporter that you need to work on a somewhat regular basis to afford to make these trips and to also earn the opportunity to have holidays to visit your family over Christmas, so that put the kibosh on those plans.

Instead, I made plans to attend the one of the marquee events of Northwest Territorial Days as the Battlefords Agricultural Society played host to the 33rd annual Western Canadian Finals Demolition Derby.

Naturally, any motor-

ized competition is going to have my attention, but a demolition derby where the winner can pick up $2,500 and bragging rights for an entire year is going to have my attention.

Back in my hometown of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., we had a few demolition derbies at my local paved short track, Laird International Raceway.

Eventually, those went the way of the dodo bird as they were eventually replaced with a ‘Spin to Win’ event, school bus races and a botched attempt at building a figure eight track in the middle of the infield, but I’ll save that rant about that facility for another day.

With 21 cars entered to battle it out for the grand prize Friday night, this seemed like something that would be different from what I have seen in the past.

My assumptions were certainly confirmed the moment I headed towards the grandstands, as it was hard to find a seat if you got there just before the races got started at 6 p.m.

In a sense, it was similar to the crowds that you would see at the chuckwagon races that take place in North Battleford

By Lucas Punkari each June, but obviously there was a lot different atmosphere to watch cars smash into one another than it is to see chuckwagon racers zoom around the track.

For those that haven’t been to the event, here’s how it works.

Once you find your vehicle, preferably one of those massive cars that take up a city block and were made in the 1970s, you have to remove all of the glass and make sure everything is up to snuff for safety reasons.

A ring is set up in the middle of the front stretch grandstands, and a six-car heat takes place with the

last card standing advancing into the grand final.

If your car isn’t completely damaged, you have a chance to come back and compete in a mercy heat, which gives you a second chance of qualifying for the main event.

Since the goal is to keep your car running as long as possible, the main goal is to try and avoid completely destroying the front end of your car so that your motor keeps running throughout the night.

That’s easier said then done though, as other drivers will come barreling into your vehicle from all sides, which could lead to a lot more damage.

There are enough breaks in the action, though, to help drivers repair their car throughout the evening, as welders and sledgehammers become the best friends of the pit crews as they repair the machines.

Also, and this is very important to remember, you can’t hit another car in the driver’s side door as you’ll be disqualified for safety reasons.

The discretion of this rule is interpreted by the flagmen that are around the ring, so you’re better off not doing anything stupid out there otherwise you’ll get thrown out.

This year’s competition went along fairly well, with a number of long drawn-out battles to get into the final.

One of the best ones occurred in a heat race between Blair Walker and Bob Bjerkness, as both vehicles defied all logic and kept on going despite several times where one of the cars would stop running for a moment.

In the end, Walker’s car ended up taking the victory, which resulted in him getting on top of the smashed up front end and pumping the crowd following his victory.

The scariest moment of the night came during the grand finale when eventual champion Darren Poitras Jr. rammed into the side of Darcie Savoie’s machine and flipped it onto its roof.

There were a few anxious moments as emergency crews rushed to the scene, but thankfully Savoie was okay as he got out of his car and didn’t seem to be that worse for wear.

In fact, the car wasn’t too damaged despite being flipped on its head, but at that point he was out of the proceedings.

All in all, it was a pretty entertaining way to spend a Friday night, as it had enough twists and turns to keep everyone on their edge of their seat.

Sure, it was completely different than what I saw at the World of Outlaws race last month, but this was easily a good way to satisfy my need to see some of sort of motorized action before the winter sports season begins.

Plus, the fair is a great way to see some obscure soccer jerseys. I mean, how often are you going to see someone rocking a Santos Laguna uniform in this area.

Last chance to visit Prairie Whispers Staff

Canadian artist Susan Schaefer has been featured in a solo exhibition of original paintings titlted Prairie Whispers ... Depicting the Quiet Beauty of the Prairies at the Chapel Gallery in North Battleford since June 16. The show wraps up this week, on Aug. 25.

The British Columbia artist was in attendance at an opening reception June 16, which included entertainment by the band Raven She Hollers.

She also taught a workshop that day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. called Fun-Flowers. The workshop was for acrylic painters.

Prairie Whispers is made up of prairie-themed landscapes, funky old barns and sheds, and, of course, iconic elevators. These scenes all come from Schaefer’s love of the prairies.

Schaefer says, “The prairie sunrises and sunsets are magical. Golden wheat fields glisten in the sunshine. Old barns and equipment, scattered across the landscape, bring a touch of nostalgia. Even the snow drifts

are magnificent casting long shadows of blue hues.”

Prairie Whispers is a touring exhibition that debuted in May of 2015 at the Signal Hills Arts Centre in Weyburn. Next it went to the west coast for a fall exhibition at Island Exposures in Parksville, British Columbia. The show then travelled back to Regina in 2016 where it spent the summer at Government House as part of their 125th Anniversary. In February 2017, the exhibition received rave reviews opening at the McMillan Arts Centre in Parksville.

Schaefer’s Prairie Whispers series continues to grow as more pieces are added and many are sold. When asked how long Schaefer intends to work on this series, she replies, “There is no end in sight.”

Residing in Parksville, Schaefer continues to grow as an artist by participating and organizing workshops by professional artists that she admires. She is also the publisher of the Island Arts Magazine, a successful Vancouver Island Arts magazine, now into its 10th year.

Canoe peas definitely worth the effort

By Sara Williams Prior to the early 1600s, peas were mainly stored dried for use in leaner, harder times and cooked up in soups, stews, and porridge. The old English nursery rhyme, “Pease porridge hot, pease porridge cold, pease porridge in the pot, nine days old,” refers to that use. As does our “split-pea” soup of today.

Eating peas fresh began in the French Court in the late 1600s and became the height of fashion among the aristocracy. As one lady wrote, “The subject of peas continues to absorb all others... Some ladies, even after having supped... returning to their own homes, at the risk of suffering indigestion, will eat peas again before going to bed. It is both a fashion and a madness.”

I’ve been growing peas for years and no one variety has ever stood out as far and above any other.

They all involved somewhat tedious picking and even more tedious shelling: both tasks better done with company or at least with CBC radio. Then I heard about Canoe peas at the University of Saskatchewan’s Gardening/ Horticulture Program’s an-

nual Spring Renewal. The clincher was that this variety has long been grown by the local Hutterite colonies – astute vegetable growers if ever there were.

So I obtained seeds from two sources, planted them and more or less forgot about them. The early July hail storm hammered them as it did everything in my garden, but they managed to recoup and then, suddenly, in spite of a week or more of temperatures ranging well above 30°C, the plants were loaded!

Canoe peas are most probably named because the pods, each containing 10 to 12 sweet peas, are long, slightly curved, and boat-shaped – like a canoe.

The plants are semi-leafless, (like the variety Novella) and produce many tendrils. They are about 30 inches tall, self-supporting (no fencing or netting required), and very productive. From seed to harvest is a mere 70 days. Canoe is described as an open-

pollinated heirloom variety, so allow enough pods to mature and dry down to save your own seed for next year’s garden.

They are delicious and flavourful when shelled and eaten right off the vine (the bonus for those doing the picking), cooked for supper, or frozen for enjoying a taste of summer in the middle of winter. The sugars in peas change to starch almost as soon as they are picked. So you’d better shell fast!

Peas do best in full sun in well-drained soil that has been enriched with organic material. My own soil is basically beach sand (it blew in the dust storms of the dirty thirties), but after numerous loads of wellrotted manure, it is much improved. Sow the seeds as soon as the soil begins to warm and can be worked in the spring, about early to mid May. But avoid planting into cold wet soil as plants may be prone to rot under those conditions.

An inch of water per week is generally recommended. Peas do best when the weather is not overly hot - but that’s not something we can control. I generally side-dress them in early summer with a granular fertilizer with

a higher middle number (phosphorus) such as 1151-0. Seeds are sown about an inch apart and 1/2 to 1 inch deep, deeper in lighter soils, shallower in heavier soils. Space the rows 12 to 18 inches apart. Good air circulation is essential and is the best preventative measure to reduce powdery mildew.

Provincial laws require that all areas that are harvested on public land be either replanted or allowed to naturally grow back to standards set through legislation. Although when viewing an area that has been harvested it does appear to be a devastating process, it is important to remember that ‘deforestation’ is a term that is referring to land that has been cleared of trees permanently and converted to another use. Harvesting trees does not cause deforestation as those harvested areas regrow. The deforestation rate in Canada has been declining for over twenty years and is one of the lowest deforestation rates in the world. It is essential to ensure we manage this resource wisely for a number of reasons: the boreal forest creates jobs

for Canadians; communities in the boreal zone rely heavily on the forest sector for economic stability and 70% of our Aboriginal communities are located in forest regions. The boreal

arctic zone in northern Canada and the temperate zone in southern Canada.

The boreal forest is the forested area within the larger boreal zone. The boreal forest from the world perspective is “circumpolar” because it circles the Northern Hemisphere, forming a ring around the North Pole, just south of the Arctic Circle. Countries with forests and land in the boreal zone include Canada, the United States, Norway, Sweden, Russia, China and a few others.

Worldwide the boreal forest covers 14 per cent of the land on earth and covers 1.9 billion hectares. Trees in the boreal forest include: pine, spruce, larch, fir, poplar and birch as well as thousands of lakes, rivers and wetlands. Half the bird species (150 different species of birds) in Canada reside in the boreal forest as well as an extensive range of mammals, insects, fungi and micro-organisms.

It is my hope that this article will entice you to experience the boreal forest once again or for the first time.

North Stars players prepared to defend title

The Battlefords North Stars will be the hunted instead of the hunters in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League this season.

After winning their first league title in 17 years back in April, the other 11 teams in the SJHL will be trying to knock the North Stars off their perch and prevent them from repeating as Canalta Cup champions.

“We’ve been one of the top teams in the league for the last two years, so we’re kind of used to that,” third year North Stars defenceman Levi Kleiboer said during the team’s annual golf tournament at Jackfish

Lodge Friday.

“We have hard practices throughout the week and we’re a team that always works hard during games, so we know what it takes to have a chance for a championship.”

This year’s North Stars squad will be looking to have a much better outcome than the last time the franchise looked to defend the SJHL title, as they missed the playoffs for the first time in seven years back in 2001.

They will be doing so with a new coaching staff behind the bench, as Brandon Heck takes over the head coach and general manager duties from Nate Bedford and Boyd Wakelin has been brought in as the new assistant coach to

replace Braeden Johnson.

“We’re kind of used to the coaching changes a little bit after Nate took over from Kevin [Hasselberg] last year,” Kleiboer said.

“We have a good group of veterans that are here now so I’m sure we’ll help guide the guys a little bit as they get used to things.”

Kleiboer will be among

those on the team who will move into a prominent leadership role for the North Stars this season, as captain Kendall Fransoo has moved on from the junior ranks along with assistant captains Reed Delainey, Logan Nachtegaele and Connor Sych.

“They were the best

leaders in the league and the lessons that I learned from those guys is something I hope to do with the newer guys joining our team,” Kleiboer said.

Among those new faces joining the North Stars will be Maidstone native Josh Sielsky, who was acquired by the North Stars in June in a trade with the Neepawa Natives of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.

“I’m honestly so thankful for the opportunity to come here,” Sielsky said.

“I’m close to my friends and family and I was extremely motivated to be better for this coming season with the trade happening right at the start of the off-season.

In his first year in Ju-

nior A, the 18-year-old forward had a busy season as he started the season with the SJHL’s Nipawin Hawks before getting dealt to the Portage Terriers prior to joining the Natives.

He finished the season with 17 points in 39 games and got a taste of the pressure packed situations that comes with playoff hockey as the Natives made a late run just to make it to the post-season.

“We had to win seven out of our last 10 games to get the final playoff spot and we were able to sneak in there,” Sielsky said.

“I think that experience helped me out a lot going forward, especially as I join the North Stars. I know a lot of the guys and I think it will be a fun year.”

Allen dealt to BCHL champion Vees One of the Battlefords North Stars top offensive weapons from last season is heading further west.

Ben Allen, who was on the team’s top line with graduating forward Coby Downs and the returning Layne Young, has been dealt to the British Columbia Hockey League champion Penticton Vees ahead of that team’s training camp this week.

The 20 year old from Allen, Texas had 45 points in 44 games to fin-

ish fourth in team scoring and was named to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s all-rookie team after he was acquired from the Fort McMurray Oil Barons of the Alberta Junior Hockey League in October.

He then had 13 points in 12 playoff games during the North Stars run to the Canalta Cup title, which put him in a tie with five other players for the third most in the SJHL postseason.

Allen’s departure means that the North Stars will now lose eight of their top 10 scorers from last year’s team.

After Young, who had 71 points in 53 games to one point behind Downs, the next highest returning scorer is defenceman Levi Kleiboer, who had 32 points in 55 contests last season.

MacGregor Sinclair will be the second-highest scoring returning forward for the team following a

22-point rookie campaign.

The North Stars also made a minor trade last week as forward Keelan Saworski was dealt to the Kindersley Klippers for future considerations.

The 19 year old from Regina suited up in just two games for the North Stars last season after he was acquired in November from the Melfort Mustangs, where he had two goals and an assist in 11 games.

Saworski finished out

the year in Junior B with the Fernie Ghostriders of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League and had 15 points in 21 games.

Another major SJHL trade took place Friday afternoon as the Yorkton Terriers moved 18-year-old twin brothers Carson and McKenzie Welke to the Camrose Kodiaks of the AJHL. The Welkes had spent the last two seasons playing for their hometown team, with Carson putting

up 58 points in 95 games and McKenzie scoring 64 points in 105 career games.

In the deal, the Terriers recieved 19-year-old forward Slater Strong, who had nine points in 34 games for the Kodiaks last season, and a player development fee.

The Terriers made a seperate deal later that day with the AJHL’s Calgary Canucks for 17-year-old forward Dalton Ossman, who had 18 points in 41 games last year.

Although it may not feel like it due to the time of the year, many curling rinks will be starting their 201718 seasons this weekend.

One of those curlers taking to the ice will be Robyn Silvernagle’s North Battleford-based foursome as they will start their season Friday night against Balgonie’s Mandy Selzer at the Spider Performance Icebreaker Bonspiel in Winnipeg.

“Normally we’re practicing at the end of the summer so this will be the earliest any of us have curled to start a season,” Silvernagle said.

“We’ve gone to Nipawin a couple of times to practice during a curling camp they had up there but we tend to take the summer off from the ice as we want to be raring to go at this time of the year.”

Last season’s provincial runner-ups will have a slightly different lineup for this season as second Cristina Goertzen stepped away from the rink in February.

Replacing Goertzen is Jolene Campbell, who skipped Saskatchewan to a 6-5 record at the 2016 Scotties Tournament of Hearts and was the third for the Saskatchewan team that won the 2015 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship.

“It actually came together fairly quickly,” Silvernagle said. “Danya [Demers] had curled with Jolene a couple of years ago and they remained good friends, so they were still in contact with one another.

“When we found out that Cristina was going to be moving on, Jolene was the first person we had in mind to come and join us.”

Campbell will be the third on the Silvernagle rink this season, with

Demers moving down to the second position and Kara Thevenot staying at lead.

“Jolene has a ton of experience from the mixed nationals and the Scotties, so to have her as part of our team is huge for us,” Silvernagle said.

“She has that knowledge of how to handle yourself in different situations that come up, even ones that you can’t predict.”

The entire team won’t be together for their opening spiel in Winnipeg, as Thevenot will be competing at a provincial baseball championship.

“We’ll have Callan Hamon, who played with Jolene at the Scotties in 2016, joining us for the weekend,” Silvernagle said.

“This weekend will be a great opprorunity for Jolene and I to see how we operate together and go through a round-robin format in a bonspiel to shake off the rust a bit before the season gets going.”

Their other three round-robin games at the Icebreaker will see them play a trio of Winnipeg rinks that are skipped by Kerri Einarson, Brianne Meilleur and Rhonda Varnes respectively.

The event in Winnipeg will serve as a tune-up for the Silvernagle rink’s first full event together.

That will take place in Regina from Sept. 5-10 as they’ll take part in the Grand Slam of Curling’s Tour Challenge Tier II event.

“That will be our first ever Slam so that will be a whole new can of worms for us,” Silvernagle said.

“Even though it’s a Tier II event, there’s still a lot of great teams that will be there and it’ll be a lot of fun to play against them.

“Not only do you have a chance to compete for a spot at a Grand Slam event later in the season, but it

will be a good opportunity for us to earn some points towards getting a spot in the provincials and to play on arena ice before the provincials.”

Silvernagle will be in a diverse pool during round-robin play at the Tour Challenge, as she will face Russia’s Anna Sidorova, Switzerland’s Binia Feltscher, Scotland’s Hannah Fleming and Regina’s Chantelle Eberle.

“I think we’ve played Chantelle once at the provincials and we played Anna in North Battleford in a fun game back in January after they got knocked out of the Canadian Open,” Silvernagle said.

After the Tour Challenge, the Silvernagle rink will compete at the Colonial Square Classic in Saskatoon from Sept. 22 to 25 and the Prestige Hotel Curling Classic in Vernon, B.C. the following weekend.

Their next event will be the Canad Inns Classic in Portage La Prairie, Man. from Oct. 20-23.

They will then go to the Red Deer Curling Classic in Alberta from Nov. 17-20 before traveling to Lloydminster the next week for the Boundary Ford Curling Classic in their final World Curling Tour event before the provincial playdowns in Melfort from Jan. 2-7, 2018.

The winner of the provincials will represent Saskatchewan at the 2018 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Penticton, B.C. from Jan. 27-Feb. 4.

“The schedule worked out really well for us spacing wise,” Silvernagle said.

“We’ve always wanted to curl at the bonspiel in Vernon as we’ve heard a lot of good things about it. There’s a lot of events we would like to do, but then we’d be curling a few weekends in a row and that gets a little too crazy for us with our schedules.”

GROVE: David Grove of Battleford, Saskatchewan passed away on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 in the North Battleford Union Hospital following a brief illness. David was born on November 29, 1926 to Owen and Lila (Reimann) Grove on their homestead in the Willomoor District. He grew up on the homestead farming with his grandmother, his father and two brothers before beginning to farm on his own. David had a passion for farming and working with animals and continued to farm until he was 80 years old. He was a talented, inventive man who could build or fix anything and was known as the “go to” man in the district always ready to lend a hand. In 1971 he married the love of his life, Marlene Nunn and they remained happily married until her passing in 2014. Along with their children, Lorri and Jon, they had many wonderful years on the farm. David moved to Harwood Manor in North Battleford in the fall of 2015 and remained there until his passing. He had many good friends there and was reunited with some of his former neighbors. David was the best of men - kind, humble, gentle, quick to laugh, always ready to help with no expectation of return - a truly honorable man. We were blessed to have him in our lives and we will miss him always. Left to cherish his memory are his loving family are his loving family; his children: Lorri (Tim) Byers and Jon (Michele) Weidman; sisters: Gwen Huddleston, Gladys (Roman) Beckman, and Alice Grove; nieces and nephews: Milon Beckman, Brent Beckman, Blair Beckman (Lee Ann East), Lawrence Beckman, Traci Beckman, Carol (Randy) Bacon and family; and goddaughter Amanda Oxford Lopez. In some instances, people confuse these algae blooms with chemicals being dumped in lakes or spills causing fish to die.

Given the unusually hot, dry summer we have had across much of southern and central Saskatchewan, many locations are experiencing lower water levels and higher water temperatures. These conditions can lead to summer kill events to fish caused by stress from reduced oxygen levels or other water quality factors resulting from reduced water flow through the systems.

These types of events are often localized in shallower lakes and rivers and typically occur on an annual basis.

That wraps up another column. But we did have a couple of interesting questions come in.

Q: What can I do about a hawk that is dive bombing people in my neighborhood?

There is a good chance that this particular hawk is nesting and protecting its young. It sees you as a threat and will do what it can to scare you away from its nest. This happens in early summer in many locations throughout Saskatchewan and goes on for about three weeks.

In Saskatchewan, there are two hawk species that will dive bomb people to protect their nest. Merlins will be the guilty party in the spring, mostly in June, while Swainson’s Hawks will be found doing this in late July to early August.

There is really not much of a solution for this as these hawks are protected by law. Some people choose to avoid the area, while others continue to occupy the area only to be on the lookout for dive bombing hawks. Another suggestion is to use an umbrella while walking through these areas.

Q: What are the rules for pontoon boats and alcohol?

Earlier this summer, a number of conservation officers did boat patrols with RCMP and city police officers in search of violations and ensuring the waters were being used safely.

I am amazed at how many people actually purchased boats, like a pontoon boat, specifically to drink on. When picking features while purchasing, many made sure that they had a barbecue on the bow, and a cushion that could convert to a bed, so that they could call it a houseboat.

We do our best to educate and advise people that there is no legal way to drink on a pontoon boat regardless of what type of equipment you have on it.

Only moored houseboats with plumbed-in water, kitchen and sewage facilities would meet that definition.

The fine for consumption of liquor on any boat is $250, so please keep that in mind when boating in the future.

Are the times changing for the better, or not?

In the 1960s, American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan became a voice of social revolution in the antiwar and civil rights movements south of the border.

His song, The Times They Are A-changin’, released in 1964, defined an era: “Your old road is rapidly agin’; / Please get out of the new one / If you can’t lend a hand, / For the times they are a-changin’.”

And change there certainly was. But it has mutated into a culture of perpetual change. That is, change seems to be more and more what essentially describes western society.

The gradual transformation of culture has been picking up speed like a snowball rolling downhill and becoming an avalanche. The presumed shackles of old methods and conventions are being thrown off, for good or ill, and today is a stranger to yesterday.

That phenomenon has significantly affected Christian missions. Just before His ascension, the Lord Jesus Christ issued what we call the Great Commission. It’s given in some form in all four Gospels, and at the beginning of Acts. The followers of Christ are commanded to “go into all the world and preach the gospel” (Mk. 16:15), and the Lord promised, “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you;

and you shall be witnesses to Me... to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

“Witnesses.” The Greek word is martus, from which we get our English word martyr, and the early missionaries were quite aware that they could well pay with their lives for their faithfulness to Christ (Acts 20:24). Following the birth of the church, the apostles and their followers began to preach the gospel. Paul may have reached Spain, in a missionary trip not covered by the Scriptures, and there is strong evidence that Thomas reached India, and founded many local churches there. But both died a martyr’s death.

In her 1983 book, From Jerusalem to Irian Jaya, Ruth Tucker chronicles twenty centuries of world missions. It’s a record service and sacrifice, of facing great challenges with glowing faith and steadfast endurance, and of many who paid the ultimate price to carry the good news to distant lands. The dangers and difficulties did not seem to deter them.

Tucker tells how, in 1934, American missionaries to China, John and Betty Stam, were slain by the Communist Chinese.

Christians across the world grieved over the tragedy.

Even so, that did not stem the flow. In response, dedicated young people volunteered for missionary

workers who are willing to serve the Lord, whatever the cost. The materialism of the age has so often infested the church, and religious pluralism – the idea that all religions are equally valid – has intimidated many.

Bangers and integrity Whether you like ‘em baked, broiled, roasted, mild or spicy, sausages have been a dietary staple in some form and seemingly in every part of the world for generations. Though far from served on a regular basis, we occasionally enjoy the decadence of German wurst or campfire style wieners.

In a recent newspaper article and national news item, the topic of sausages came up, an unusual subject considering the time and space usually dedicated to far weightier matters. I quote:

“A federally funded study has found that 20 per cent of sausages sampled from grocery stores across Canada contained meats that weren’t on the label.”

(CBC report, August 3, 2017).

Upon further research, undisclosed ingredients include, among those other things, horse meat.

The practice of including undisclosed ingredients isn’t restricted to Canadian suppliers; some international fast food outlets have stopped ordering processed meats from suppliers of these products.

In another interesting note re the lowly sausage, a book I’m reading sheds light on the reason they are called “bangers” in England. In Young Elizabeth: the making of the Queen by Kate Williams, the author explains some restrictions during World War 11 rationing: “Sausages were bulked out

So what does this topic have to do with the way I live my life? While some folks have no problem with horse meat or the addition of other legitimate food products, what people object to most is the undisclosed inclusion. As followers of Jesus Christ, we’re not above making mistakes but honesty, authenticity and integrity are key to being a true witness.
