Dec. 12 has been circled as the date on which a decision on sentencing will be handed down in the sexual abuse case against former Beauval Indian Residential School dormitory supervisor Paul Leroux.

Justice Murray Acton has reserved his decision until that date, following submissions by the Crown and by Leroux in Battleford Queen’s Bench court Thursday.

Leroux was convicted last month of eight counts of indecent assault and two counts of gross indecency in the case. The allegations date back to the period from 1959 to 1967 at Beauval Indian Residential School.

The victims, all students at that residential school, were boys in their early teens at the time. The allegations of abuse ranged from sexual touching, fondling and oral sex, to penetration on multiple occasions.

In his submission, Crown prosecutor Mitch Piche called for a lengthy jail term for Leroux.

Piche called for a sentence to run 11 years, based on a calculation where four of the most serious counts run

consecutively in terms of four, three, two and two years each. Piche suggested the remaining sentences — one for two years and three for one year each — could run concurrently.

Taking each count individually and adding the sentences up consecutively could have brought the total sentence to 25.5 years. But Piche acknowledged that would not be considered “fit and proper” under the “totality principle” used in imposing sentence.

In determining an appropriate sentence, Piche referred to case law in several Saskatchewan court decisions as well as a Manitoba Court of Appeal ruling in the case of the Queen vs. James.

That involved former junior hockey coach Graham James who was convicted of sexually assaulting a number of former players.

The Saskatchewan cases indicated the starting point for “major sexual assault” was three years, with the length increasing or decreasing based on aggravating or mitigating factors.

In making his submission, Piche noted the moral culpability of the accused was “very high indeed,” and said Leroux used his position to “satisfy his own sexual

urges.”

Piche noted the victims were “still feeling the reverberations of this.” Piche compared the impact to the dropping of an “atom bomb” that left in its wake “radiation poisoning” in the form of alcoholism, criminality and diminished lives.

Piche also referred to Leroux’s previous convictions for sexual abuse at a residential school in Inuvik, for which he was sentenced in 1998 and paroled in 2002.

Leroux had not reoffended since 1979 and was considered a low risk to reoffend, Piche said, but he also made note that Leroux had taken “no responsibility” for his actions.

In his submission Leroux, who acted in his own defence throughout the trial, noted he was at a “distinct disadvantage.”

He took issue with referring to case law of the previous five years in imposing sentence, and seemed to suggest he would have been in line for a lighter sentence had charges been brought forward many years earlier.

In speaking to reporters, Piche did not appear convinced by Leroux’s argument. “That may or may not be the case,” he said.

Shovels in the ground for pocket housing project

Shovels are now in the ground for the long-anticipated pocket housing project in the city of North Battleford.

The new affordable housing project will provide transitional housing units at 1322- 103rd St. Each apartment will average 320 square feet with a separate entrance, a built in kitchen and private bathroom. The project is estimated to be built by March of next year.

Friday, officials braved sub-freezing conditions for the official sod-turning ceremonies. Perhaps that weather was appropriate, as one of the goals of the new housing project is to address the homeless situation, a major issue during the winter months.

The total cost of the project is $954,000, with the federal and provincial governments contributing $425,000 and Employment and Social Development Canada is contributing another $474,000.

The project has not been without controversy. A total of 21 residents within the vicinity of the project signed their names to a letter that went to city council opposing the location, with concerns expressed about safety and more property crime offences in the neighbourhood with the development.

But council approved the final location by a 5-1 vote in July.

MLA Herb Cox called the building of the project part of the growth plan for the province.

“I think this is a very important initiative that indicates we are looking after the housing needs of all of our citizens,” Cox told reporters.

Mayor Ian Hamilton welcomes the project, but also said more needs to be done, noting that the Battlefords Indian and Métis Friendship Centre will once again be running a Temporary Homeless Shelter for 2013-14.

“We will have to work very, very hard in the coming year to fill that gap,” Hamilton said.

Prairie North receives Urgent Issues Action Fund help Staff Funding has been announced to address the needs of long-term care facilities in the province.

Health Minister Dustin Duncan announced Friday the allocation of the Urgent Issues Action Fund, to address priority issues identified by health regions stemming from CEO tours of long-term care facilities earlier this year.

There had been an initial commitment of $10 million in October, but that has been bolstered, according to the health ministry. Regions received $10.04 million to address urgent issues and $3.8 million to address ongoing

pressures.

Prairie North Health Region is among the health regions receiving funding.

The funded priority areas for Prairie North are the following: · Training staff in the Gentle Persuasion Approach, helping staff better understand how to care for residents with dementia; · Improving facilities and purchasing equipment for dietary services, lifting and moving residents comfortably, for preventing residents from wandering outside the facility, as well as oxygen support to better meet residents’ and staff’s needs; · Providing Internet access;

Several submissions spoke of how the victims’ lives were adversely impacted, with many statements speaking of excessive alcoholism, anger, shame, as well as the impact on their families.

One of Leroux’s victims, whose name is protected under a court-imposed publication ban, read his statement.

He said the victims “had to

carry the burden of anger and shame that you have placed on us.”

As for whether he forgave Leroux, he said “not likely,” adding Leroux had “wreaked havoc upon innocents and therefore destroyed the lives of many people.”

In speaking to reporters outside the courthouse, he reiterated that sentiment.

“For me to say that I forgive him for what he’s done, no, I will never do that,” he said.

“Maybe for someone else they can do that, but I have to live with this. We have lived in shame and we’ve spent so many years hiding from the things that had happened to us.”

Other regions are seeing similar areas addressed, including purchasing priority equipment including lifts, tubs, electric beds and pressure supports to improve care for residents, while allowing staff more time to spend on direct client care; as well as implementing such things as electronic charting and point-of-care technologies that allow staff to spend more time with the residents.

The province also says there are also plans in the coming week for more than 100 health system leaders, long-term care providers, families and other stakeholders from across Saskatchewan to take part in an engagement session that will focus on quality and appropriate models of care in long-term

settings. It was also focused on the broader continuum of care as well.

The issue of senior care had been a hot topic in the Legislature during the fall session. The opposition NDP questioned the government several times on the issue, with leader Cam Broten expressing his concerns about the quality of care as well as funding levels during a tour of the province on the issue.

The provincial government initially committed $10 million after the release of a report in early October on conditions in long-term care facilities in the province. That report followed up on facility-by-facility tours in health regions in the province.

While a number of positives were cited in that report such as the efforts of staff

members and volunteers at the facilities, priority issues identified included food, care issues, safety, the resident mix (placing young with older, frail residents) and aging infrastructure.

In a statement, Duncan reiterated the government’s commitment to “making

improvements that place the needs of our long-term care residents first.

“Today we are providing funding to the health regions to address issues that improve quality of care for seniors.

This is an important step in the transformation of our long-term care system.”

Missing girl located Staff Battlefords RCMP report that a girl who ran away Tuesday at about 8 p.m. from a care home outing at Don Ross Hill Tuesday has been located.

Originally reported as being 11 years old, the 13year-old was located safely in North Battleford at about

midnight Wednesday when police received information regarding her whereabouts.

RCMP tracked the girl down through persistent checking of leads, according to press releases. Police credit media involvement and the co-operation of the public as being key to the safe return of the girl to the care home where she has been living.

About 5% of Canada’s children live in actual poverty To end poverty we need to properly measure it

Every year around this time there’s a flurry of studies, reports and media stories about the state of poverty in Canada, especially child poverty. We are told that as many as one-seventh of Canada’s kids live in poverty.

And the accompanying descriptions of the predicament of those children paint a picture of hunger and of serious deprivation.

But is it true that roughly 15 per cent of children live in households that are too poor to afford the basic needs?

Is it the case that these children are “wasting away” and have to “read or write or think on an empty stomach” as Ed Broadbent famously stated in his Nov. 24, 1989 House of Commons speech on child poverty?

Fortunately, it is not the case. The measure used to find that 15 per cent of our children are “poor” is a relative measure. A relative measure can tell us only how many households are “less well off than average” and does not purport to reveal anything about hunger or other kinds of real deprivation. Relative measures can arguably speak to the condition of “low-income” but not poverty. Statistics Canada has been consistently clear on this distinction, even though it appears to be lost on most users of lowincome measures.

When we measure actual poverty, defined as a predicament of real deprivation (sometimes referred to as “absolute” poverty), we find that about five per cent of Canada’s children live in households with reported incomes that are insufficient to cover all of the basic needs.

Children in these households are at risk of being hungry, ill-housed and deprived of other necessities. While this can be viewed as good news when compared to the alarming (but misleading) statistics using relative measures, it is tragic that we have five per cent of our children in this apparent state of real deprivation. This is not acceptable.

Let’s be clear. Living in poverty is not about being deprived of an iPad, the coolest Nike sneakers or dinners out at restaurants. It is about not having enough food to eat and perhaps having to go to a soup kitchen or food bank. When you are poor, you often cannot afford to replace worn out clothing or meet personal hygiene needs. When you are poor, you are likely to live in inadequate and often unsafe accommodation. Being poor

is unhealthy. There is a heightened sense of urgency and desperation about living in poverty that is simply not the case with those above the poverty line. If we include, as poor, those whose deprivation is merely relative in kind, we risk trivializing the predicament of the poor.

In 1995, the United Nations sponsored a world summit on social development in Copenhagen. That summit, which focused attention on poverty in both developed and developing nations, ended with a declaration that committed signatory nations to both measure and eradicate absolute poverty. Canada and all of the other developed nations signed on to that declaration.

Regrettably, there has been virtually no follow-up relating to the commitments made at Copenhagen. As far as I am aware, there has been no action taken by successive governments. And the media seems to have buried this.

If it was a good idea in 1995 to measure and strive to eliminate absolute poverty, what changed to make it a bad idea? If absolute poverty relates to hunger, inadequate housing and serious deprivation, why would those most closely associated with poverty (politicians, reporters, academics and, especially, social activists) not want to measure the true incidence of this problem? And why would they not want to eliminate it? Looked at from the perspective of poor people, it seems scandalous that these commitments remain both unfulfilled and hidden.

Among those featured entertainers were the Loewens and Co. (above), as well as Bob Zurowski (right) who delivered a Christmas story reading.

Nora Hickson-Kelly: A life dedicated to others

I must give thanks to Leola Macdonald for researching and writing a draft on Nora Hickson-Kelly. She did an excellent job and her work is much appreciated.

Nora Hickson was born in England. After the death of her husband, Nora’s mother, a headmistress of an English boarding school, immigrated with her daughter to north central Saskatchewan. It was her intent to be closer to family and find opportunities for eight-year-old Nora.

Life was not easy for Nora and her mother. They lived in poverty for the first three years. Nora’s mother taught in a one-room rural school. A one-room sod-roofed log shack with only the barest necessities was home. Much of the furniture was made from packing crates and apple boxes. But despite their adverse living conditions with little extra money, Nora’s mother was able to acquire a fine piano by taking over a homesteader’s monthly payments of $5. In addition, she received the American publication, The Etude, replete with articles on music and the lyrics and notes for piano pieces.

After three years of deprivation, opportunity knocked.

Nora and her mother were able to move to the bustling city of North Battleford. Mrs. Hickson was fortunate to secure a teaching position at King Street School. Nora’s mother saw to it that she was immersed in music education. Her mother could now afford piano lessons for her daughter. In addition, Nora took dancing lessons on Saturday with her mother accompanying on the piano. They also attended St. Paul’s Anglican Church and sang in the choir. As Nora grew older, she was an accompanist for many functions.

Nora was an honour student at King Street School and she graduated near the top of her class at the North Battleford Collegiate Institute. After graduation, Nora worked in the Woolworth store for a short time. She then enrolled in the Saskatoon Normal School to prepare for a teaching career. Nora was only 19 when she accepted her first teaching position in a one-room rural school. She taught in another rural school for a year. In September of 1933 she accepted a teaching position in the town of Lanigan. Nora enjoyed working with young people, particularly at the Lanigan School. In 1936, she was fortunate to be able to move back to North Battleford to be close to her mother and her many friends, and to begin teaching Grades 1 to 4 at the Saskatchewan Hospital School. Her pupils were affected very little by the Great Depression. The hospital was self-contained. There was plenty of water and the hospital farm produced all of the food required by the patients and their children. Children wore hand-me-downs. Children’s mothers made overcoats by taking used coats, turning them inside-out and altering and sewing them to size. They did the same with pants. Mothers also made baby layettes that were donated to the needy.

Nora was a most diligent and accomplished young woman, virtues she no doubt inherited from her mother. She had studied music theory, harmony, counterpoint, history and pedagogy. She passed her music exams with high honours. Nora had also taken shorthand and touch typing, skills that would later serve her well as a reporter for the Saskatoon Star Phoenix. A number of Nora’s articles were published in MacLean’s Magazine.

Nora taught the children of the Saskatchewan Hospital employees in a one-room school (the “brick”) located on the hospital grounds. She wore a three-quarter length smock cover up – fashionable for the time — with small red and white checks and big red and black pockets. She was certainly an attractive young woman. Nora was an exceptional teacher, competent, caring and kind. Her students loved her. They were fortunate their teacher was blessed with extraordinary musical talent. She wrote music and words based on the Grades 1, 2 and 3 readers. What fun her students had acting out and singing those songs. These music pieces were later made into a book, High Roads to Singing. Nora’s concern for her students extended beyond teaching the curriculum and music. Like a good parent, she was also concerned with their physical health and wellbeing. It might

seem a shade unconventional, but Nora always carried a vial of eucalyptus oil for medicinal purposes. She applied the oil liberally to students as she determined was necessary.

The brick school was closed in 1939. Pupils attended the Duke School that was also located on the grounds.

Grades 5 to 8 were bused to Battleford Central School.

At about this time, Bill Kelly, a young and handsome Welshman and a member of the local RCMP detachment came into Nora’s life. Bill had a beautiful baritone singing voice. He was a member of the St. Paul’s Anglican Church choir (as was Nora) and a soloist at the annual music festival in North Battleford. After the students were dismissed for the day, he would arrive at the school.

Nora would accompany him on the piano as he practised his solos. It wasn’t long before the good looking, intelligent and talented young couple became interested in each other beyond their mutual love of music.

Nora moved to Toronto to begin chiropractic treatments for her chronic back pain and difficulty walking.

By October, Bill moved to Toronto from Hafford where he reported to the ”O” Division and the Criminal Investigation Branch.

Nora and Bill were married on July 10, 1940. They continued to live in Toronto. Bill had a heavy workload, but he continued his singing lessons when he had time. In 1946, Bill was 35, one of the youngest officers to achieve the rank of sub-inspector. Nora continued writing. She wrote monthly articles for the Canadian Red Cross Junior, a series on Prime Minister McKenzie King, the Soviet Union dictator, Stalin, and other world leaders. She also researched and wrote articles on the history of the RCMP. In 1947, Nora and Bill moved to Ottawa. This was followed by a move to Halifax. It was here that Nora was able to finish her book, The Men of the Mounted. During the next few years there were more promotions, more moves, and more books. Nora’s books provided handsome royalties that she donated to charity.

Nora began making donations to the Battlefords Interval House in North Battleford. She continued donating from March of 1992 to 2001. At this time, the Community Foundation of Ottawa began to administer the William and Nora Hickson Kelly Fund and forwarded money to the BIH on its behalf. In total, Nora and Bill donated $17,800 to the Battlefords Interval House. In addition, they have covered the cost of having a roof constructed over the outside deck. Nora’s and Bill’s interest in the physical integrity of the building was overshadowed by their concern for the children at the shelter so they instructed the staff to use the contributions for their benefit.

In 1998, Nora began collecting children’s books from the library in Ottawa and neighbourhood bazaars and Chapters Stores and then shipping them to the BIH for the children. She also asked the staff to use money from the fund to purchase Benjamin Chee Chee pictures and hang them in the hallways, the purpose of which was to underscore the importance of family. Nora also donated her book, The Queen’s Horse. In 1999, Nora indicated three new books would be published.

Two were by her husband, one about his work and life as a young Mountie in charge of a 4,000 square mile area and the other about a Mountie in charge of the eastern Ontario black market squad during the Second World War. Nora’s book described the life of a Mountie’s wife.

In June, 2001, Nora was 91 years old. Bill was 90. Both were adamant that they were not ready to go to a residential care home. But the ravages of age inevitably weakened them. Sadly, in 2005, Nora passed from this life.

On the occasion of North Battleford’s centennial, we pause to remember and thank an extraordinarily talented and selfless woman (and her husband) who put the needs of others before her own. Nora Hickson Kelly was one of our city’s outstanding citizens.

Discovering Downtown

Shopping spree an eye‐opener Much has been said over the past several months about efforts to revive the downtown district.

Getting people to think positively again about downtown is a challenge, given the disrepair the area fell into in the last number of years.

But there is new optimism about the future of downtown. A downtown business improvement district has been established and with it have come efforts to clean up the area and hold events to attract people to the downtown core.

Downtown North Battleford Executive Director Lisa McEachern and the rest of the BID team have been thinking up some bright ideas to try to drum up positive interest in downtown.

Their most recent initiative, called “Discover Downtown,” was geared directly to the media. According to the letter sent by the BID, “Discover Downtown is an opportunity for local media personalities to experience downtown and share it with their audience.”

We were issued a $100 RBC Visa gift card and given a challenge: spend our card at three downtown businesses not typically patronized.

The biggest challenge initially was figuring out if we actually had any notable “media personalities” here at the News-Optimist. We finally concluded we didn’t have any, but we had space to fill in the paper, so it was decided I should use the gift card and write the story.

Besides, we were happy to do a positive story about good things happening downtown.

Choosing downtown businesses that I had never been to before proved an easy challenge for me to take up because, sadly, I haven’t done very much shopping downtown — not even at some of the more notable places that have been around a long time.

Like many in the Battlefords, I normally shop at retailers in either the southeast quadrant or the north end in the city. Whenever I ventured downtown, it was usually for a trip to the bank, or a work-

For me, this was a chance to discover things about downtown that I hadn’t experienced before and perhaps encourage some of you to think about doing the same.

With Jayne Foster joining me to take pictures, I began my shopping journey at Milbanke’s Flowers on 100th Street, where I was looking for possible ideas for a gift for mom for Christmas.

The store featured a colourful array Christmas poinsettias, as well as other items. There was an array of elephant-themed gift items there, which intrigued me since my dad is South African and has a number of Africanthemed items at the house, so an elephant seemed to fit right in.

Ultimately I decided on a Christmas cactus houseplant as a gift for Mom. The reason I settled on that was because

I liked the idea of something that was low maintenance.

Also, I didn’t want something that would attract bugs, which can be an issue with other plants.

Initially, though, I put the order on “hold” so that I could come back and pick up the plant later on that day, the idea being to keep it away from the cold weather as long as possible.

We looked around other parts of 100th Street including the menu at a restaurant in the Beaver Hotel, and then made our way to 101st Street looking for more ideas.

I decided pretty early on that I wasn’t going to let my gift card go to waste. I was going to be my usual finicky self when it came to shopping. I’m notorious for being a very tough customer at the best of times, and it’s difficult to impress me.

A tie, Grey Cup souvenirs and a hidden gem of a cafe

Tucked away in Miami Tanning and Clothing is Miami Paninis and Smoothies. It turned out to be a perfect spot for lunch while I tallied up how much I had left to spend.

Back in the newsroom, my colleagues not only got to share the cookies I bought, but also the Christmas cactus until I take it to my mom at Christmas. It’s safer here, as if I took it home I might kill it!

Continued from Page 7 We looked around the two Jeans and Joggers stores downtown and ventured into the Scandinavian Home Bakery and then the Danish Home Bakery, looking for some deals. In the Danish bakery we were in luck. They had some chocolate chip cookies on sale for $4.75, so I bought those with my gift card for the office and we ended up eating them all week back in the newsroom.

After that, we made our way up the street to Bill & Don’s Men’s Wear where I decided to look for a tie to get for my dad for Christmas.

offered in the $45 range.

There were quite a few good ones, one of them featured white dots, which was eye-catching for sure. In the end, though, I finally picked one that had a few stripes on it. They gave me a discount on it, too, so I ended up using only around $42 on the gift card.

Counting the Christmas cactus that I still had to go back and officially purchase, I had accounted for roughly $70 of my $100 gift card.

I had met the challenge of using the gift card at three downtown businesses, with $30 left to spare, but I still needed to use the remaining amount up.

I decided to go to Miami Tanning and Clothing on 102nd Street, hoping to purchase some Saskatchewan Roughriders souvenirs.

Unfortunately the Riders’ Grey Cup items had not arrived yet and were expected to show up later on in the day.

So I held off on spending any of the gift card on items in that store for the time being.

Jayne and I did find an adjoining café called Miami Paninis and Smoothies. The place was kind of hidden away inside the Miami Tanning building so a lot of you may not know about it -- it really is a hidden gem in the downtown and had nice décor, with pictures of New York City. I ended up having a burger, fries and Five Alive juice for lunch.

Afterwards I headed over to Milbanke’s to pick up my Christmas cactus and they swiped my gift card there.

My final stop of the day was to Logan’s Audio and Video, but I didn’t find an item that interested me in my modest price range. I noticed they had a number of impressive-looking televisions on display there.

That pretty much wrapped up the shopping for the day, but I still hadn’t used up all the cash on my Visa gift card Tuesday.

I returned to Miami Tanning and Clothing on Friday afternoon. Their Grey Cup souvenirs were now in stock, so, with the help of my gift card and with some additional funds I had, I purchased a 2013 Saskatchewan Roughriders Grey Cup T-shirt to send to my brother for Christmas.

That gives you an idea about the range of items I was able to purchase downtown with a gift card of $100.

Hopefully this gives you some ideas about some of the places where you might be interested in going to for your shopping spree.

I enjoyed taking up the Discover Downtown shopping challenge and hope to return downtown to do more shopping in the future.

Fourteen candidates vie for 10 seats at C of C table

The election for directors to the Battlefords Chamber of Commerce for 2014 is unusually competitive this time.

Nominations have closed and a total of 14 individuals have come forward as candidates, with the field including seven incumbents seeking reelection as well as seven newcomers. Only 10 of them will be elected to serve on the board of directors for a two-year term that begins in January.

The candidates are: Brendon Boothman, RBC Dominion Securities; Jay Bottomley, Oil Can Charlie’s; Terry Caldwell, Carpet Superstore; Darla Conley, SaskTel; Ruebecca Fiddler, Loraas Environmental Services; Donna Fuhr, DMD Studio in The Pleasant Garden;

Jeff Graham, Bee J’s Office Plus; Ed Lee, M & M Meat Shops; Alberta Mak, Action Realty ASM Ltd.; Ryan Moe, G & C Asphalt Ltd.; Gwen Renwick, Innovation Credit Union; Marcela Torres, Cleaning Call; Trevor Watts, Eternal Memories Funeral Service and Crematorium; and Warren Williams, Bralin Technology Solutions.

Autism conference offered Staff Parents of children with autism and professionals who work with them can learn from leaders and specialists in the field by attending a two-day conference in North Battleford, one of more than 50 communities across the province and Alberta, British Columbia and the Northwest Territories expected to link in through Telehealth.

The 7th annual conference, hosted by Children’s

Autism Services of Edmonton, is an educational event that engages respected researchers and practitioners to present in-depth sessions with practical strategies and resources.

This year’s featured presenter is Michelle Garcia Winner, internationally renowned speech language pathologist from California, who coined the phrase “social thinking.” How we think about others – social thinking – affects how we understand and relate to one

another, according to a press release.

For most that process is intuitive but, for a child with autism, this is a complex communication skill that must be learned, the release explains.

The conference runs Thursday, Jan. 23 to Friday Jan. 24, at the Edmonton Marriott at River Cree.

New K cut off date

Submitted The Boards of Education of Light of Christ Catholic School Division and Living Sky School Division have passed motions to change the cut off date for entrance to kindergarten from Oct. 31 to Dec. 31.

Children who are five years old as of Dec. 31 of the school year may be admitted to kindergarten starting in the 2014-15 school year.

Kindergarten is a time for growth, wonder and discovery when the building blocks for physical well-being, school readiness and social belonging are established.

Parents are encouraged to contact their local school for further information about kindergarten registration.

Outdoor rinks ready for action Staff ‘Tis the season for outdoor winter activities, and the City of North Battleford has announced its seven outdoor skating rinks are ready for action.

The rinks are set up at three schools — Connaught, St. Mary and EMBM. There are also neighbourhood rinks in Killdeer Park, Fairview Heights, River View and behind the Civic Centre.

Crowdfunding Staff Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority is now allowing small businesses and start-ups in Saskatchewan to sell stakes in their companies to residents of the province through the Saskatchewan Equity Crowdfunding Exemption.

“We know that the current rules for selling a stake in a company can be expensive, complicated and time consuming for small businesses or start-ups,” FCAA chair and CEO Dave Wild said.

“Equity crowdfunding will help fill the fundraising gap for these businesses so that they can compete in our market.”

Protecting the public interest is at the top of FCAA’s priorities. In addition to other precautions, the Equity Crowdfunding Exemption limits the amount of money individual investors can risk and how much individual companies can raise.

North Stars win streak snapped by La Ronge Ice Wolves the net.

There was a scary moment for the North Stars in the second stanza.

Leonenko got tangled up with an Ice Wolves defender behind the net and stayed down on the ice for an extended period of time.

He was helped off the ice by teammates and did not put pressure on his right leg on his way to the locker room.

He did not return.

Tensions boiled over near the end of the second. North Stars’ forward Austin Evans dropped the gloves with Ice Wolves’ defenseman Tanner Clark as play left the La Ronge zone.

Clark got the advantage with a quick takedown while landing a couple of punches.

Battlefords got on the board early in the third period on the power play.

With Eric Macoretta in the box for slashing, the North Stars won the ensuing face off and worked the puck to Latrell Charleson who snapped it past Fuhr from the point.

It had to end sometime.

Tyler Fuhr stopped 35 of 36 shots as the La Ronge Ice Wolves ended Battlefords’ eight-game winning streak by beating the North Stars 2-1 at the Civic Centre Sunday night.

The North Stars (16-140-2) also had their run of 10 straight games with a point stopped.

Battlefords had chances in the first period to break the game open.

Early in the first, Igor Leonenko lost control of the puck on a breakaway attempt.

The North Stars kept buzzing around the net, forcing Fuhr to make a couple of quality saves to keep his team in the game.

In the second, the North Stars continued to apply pressure to the Ice Wolves.

Battlefords had multiple chances on a power play midway through the period, but did not find the back of

Macoretta’s shot went wide and bounced off the end boards. The puck deflected off of a sprawled Gudmandson and crossed the goal line.

The North Stars applied

Gudmandson made 28 saves in a losing effort for the North Stars.

It was his first loss in his time with Battlefords.

La Ronge (13-14-1-0) heads home for a Tuesday night game against Nipawin.

Battlefords had an impressive winning streak through the month of November.The team last lost Nov. 16 in a shootout in Humboldt against the Broncos.

Their last regulation loss was Nov. 9 in Nipawin.

During the streak, the North Stars were given strong goaltending from Gudmandson and Darren Martin. Battlefords only allowed more than three goals twice during the stretch.

Battlefords outscored their opponents 29-16 during the streak.

Only two of the eight games went beyond regulation. Both times ended with a shootout.

The streak made an impact in the standings for the North Stars.

They sit third in the Kramer division with 34 points, five points behind first place Humboldt.

Battlefords are fifth in league standings, eight points behind the first place Yorkton Terriers.

The North Stars’ aim to start a new streak Wednesday night.

They play at home against the Melfort Mustangs at the Civic Centre. Puck drop is 7:30 p.m.

Midget AAA Stars split weekend games against Tisdale Trojans

The Battlefords Midget AAA Stars hosted the Tisdale Trojans for two games at the Civic Centre last weekend in SMAAAHL play. The teams split the games.

The Stars won 5-2 Saturday afternoon, while the Trojans beat Battlefords 5-4 Sunday.

The Stars had a strong opening to the game Saturday.

They did not allow the Trojans to register a shot on net for the first seven minutes of the period.

Battlefords struck first on the power play with less than nine minutes to play in the period. Graham Gove’s shot beat Trojans goaltender Brandon Holtby shortly before time expired on the power play.

Tisdale tied the game less than 40 seconds later. After a scramble in front of the net, the puck found Wyatt Hinson’s stick at the bottom of the faceoff circle. He snapped it past Battlefords’ goalie Ryan Rewerts to even the score.

With eight seconds left in the first period, the Stars broke the tie.

Spencer Bast chipped the puck over Holtby and Josh Bly buried the puck to make

it a 2-1 game heading into the intermission.

The second period featured nine penalties between the two teams.

The Stars capitalized on one when Josh LaFramboise scored a highlight reel goal.

LaFramboise batted a rebound out of mid air to extend the Stars’ lead to two.

Tisdale cut the lead to one on a costly turnover in the Stars’ end.

Battlefords’ defenseman Traye Tkatchuk fanned on a pass. Brandon Arnold jumped on the loose puck and snapped it through Rewerts’ five hole with 1:33 left in the second.

In the third, the Stars pulled away with two goals from defenceman Corbin Schmidt.

His first came five minutes into the period. Schmidt’s shot from the point found its way through traffic to beat Holtby.

Schmidt’s second was another shot from the point that found the top corner over Holtby’s glove.

Rewerts stopped 34 shots to earn the win for the Stars.

Holtby made 31 saves for the Trojans in a losing effort.

The Trojans came out strong Sunday afternoon, using a strong fore check to put pressure on the Stars’ defence.

Rewerts sprawled to make a save, but the puck was knocked away. Tanner Nagel was able to tap the puck in to give Tisdale a 1-0 lead.

The Stars tied the game just before the period ended.

With eight seconds left in the period, Kaleb Dahlgren snapped the puck in the top corner on the short side to even the score at one before

the first intermission.

Tisdale came out strong again and the pressure resulted in the Trojans regaining the lead.

Rylan Freed’s centering pass deflected off Stars’ defenseman Tkatchuk and slid past Rewerts for the goal.

Battlefords tied the game three minutes later. Dahlgren scored his second of the game, collecting a rebound and beating Trojans’ goalie

Kye Steinke.

The Trojans jumped back in front less than two minutes later. Matthew Perkins’ shot from the point was tipped by Tristen Elder and found its way through Rewerts’ legs.

The Stars responded on an average rush into the Trojans’ zone. Layne Young snapped the puck over Steinke’s blocker from the top of the faceoff circle.

In the third, Brennan Rid-

dle beat Rewerts from the point.

Rewerts initially appeared to make the save, but the puck found its way through his body to give the Trojans a 4-3 lead early in the period.

Battlefords tied the game two minutes later off another innocent rush into the zone.

Schmidt’s rush pushed the defenseman back as he snapped the puck off of Steinke’s glove arm.

The Trojans took the lead for good with less than six minutes left in the third.

Rewerts again appeared to cover the puck, but Hinson dislodged it from under the goaltender’s glove and knocked the puck in the net.

Rewerts and the Battlefords’ bench were furious and pleaded their case to the referees but with no result.

The go-ahead goal would stand for the Trojans.

The Stars came close to tying the game when Alex Pernitsky hit the post on a late Battlefords’ power play.

Rewerts made 28 saves in a losing effort for the Stars.

Steinke stopped 41 shots for the Trojans in the win.

Battlefords’ next game is Thursday night on the road against the Beardy’s Blackhawks.

The Stars (15-5-4-1) fall to second in the SMAAAHL, two points behind the Notre Dame Argos.

Latrell Charleson scored the decisive goal in the shootout as the Battlefords North Stars beat the Weyburn Red Wings 2-1 Saturday night.

North Stars’ goaltender Darren Martin made 36 saves and stopped all three shooters during the shootout.

In the first, both teams traded chances in a period with few stoppages. The North Stars put pressure on Weyburn in the final minute of the period, but did not find a goal. They outshot the Red Wings 16-6 in the frame.

The second period also saw both teams have great chances. On an early power play, North Stars’ forward Nick Petrino fanned on a onetimer. Martin made a key stop for Battlefords, but gave up a big rebound the Red Wings did not capitalize on.

The North Stars broke the deadlock midway through the first period. Blake Young stripped Parenteau of the puck behind the net and centred for Dillon Forbes who was playing forward for the game. Forbes made no mistake and buried the puck in the empty net to give Battlefords the lead.

Weyburn responded less than a minute later on the power play. Martin made a great save but gave up another big rebound. This time, Brendan McKay was able to find the puck for the Red Wings and slid it home as he was falling down, forcing the game into overtime.

Battlefords outshot the Red Wings 41-31 during regulation.

There were chances for both teams during the extra frame. Coaches and players from both teams were vocal on the ice as they felt the referees put the whistles away for overtime.

In the shootout, Charleson beat Parenteau through the five-hole. Martin stopped Weyburn’s final shooter McKay to win the game for the North Stars.

The Battlefords AAA Sharks travelled to Swift Current last weekend to play two games against the Wildcats in SMFAAAHL action. The Sharks lost both games by the same 4-0 score.

Saturday’s game saw the Wildcats score three times in five minutes during the second period. Kate Scidmore beat Sharks’ goaltender Rachel Mitchell to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Scidmore scored her second of the game almost a minute and a half later.

Karlie Bell added a goal with 12 minutes left in the second. Kayla Kirwin scored the fourth Wildcats’ goal four minutes into the third period.

Swift Current opened the scoring in the first period during Sunday’s game.

Scidmore beat Mitchell with 23 seconds left in the opening frame.

In the second, the Wildcats were led by two power play goals. Karlie Bell scored to put Swift Current up 2-0. Tori Kendall extended the Wildcats’ lead to three.

Keely Chalk scored midway through the third period.

Bridge crash ties up traffic Thursday Staff A minor crash in the northbound lane of the Battlefords Bridge tied up traffic for a short time Thursday morning.

North Battleford Fire Department assisted at the site of the crash at about 8:45 a.m. An NBFD press release indicates a driver lost control of their vehicle due to icy conditions. According to firefighters the driver was not injured, but the vehicle had to be towed.

Firefighters were called to investigate a strange odour in a home at 1628 MacKenzie King Cres. Thursday at about 9:45 p.m. It was determined the non-toxic odour was

caused by a furnace malfunction. NBFD reports a plumber was called to check into the problem.

Firefighters were called to Connaught School early Monday morning where fire alarms were ringing.

Upon arrival at about 6:20 a.m. firefighters discovered a ruptured sprinkler had activated the alarm system.

Firefighters were on the scene for about 25 minutes helping school staff shut off the sprinkler flow.

Man dies Staff KERROBERT — Highway 21 between Kerrobert and Kindersley was closed for a time Monday, while RCMP investigated a crash that left one man dead.

Kerrobert RCMP say a man between 20 and 30 died after the van he was driving collided with a semi at about 12:30 p.m. Police report the driver of the semi tried to avoid the south bound mini van when it drifted into the north bound lane, but was unable to.

The man who died was the sole occupant of the van.

The driver of the semi was not injured.

OBITUARIES CAMERON: KAREN CHRISTINE ELLA – It is with sadness Karen’s family announce her passing at 11:00 a.m. Sunday, November 24, 2013 at her home in Saskatoon, SK. Karen was born in North Battleford, SK on June 29, 1945. Her early childhood was spent in North Battleford where she enjoyed spending time at the family cottage at Cochin, SK. Karen moved to Regina, SK with her family where she attended Public School at Wascana School and High School at Martin Collegiate.

Following graduation, Karen worked for Federated Co-op and Sask. Revenue. Karen married Archie Cameron on September 3, 1966 and the couple moved to Weyburn, SK. Their son, Mathew was born on June 3, 1968 and daughter, Erin on June 3, 1970. Karen and Archie moved to Rosthern, SK in 1977 where Karen worked at The Button Hole. In 1987, they moved to Rosetown, SK where Karen worked at Granny’s Fabric. In 1991 Karen and Archie moved to North Battleford, SK and from here to Saskatoon in 2009. Karen is survived by her husband, Archie; son Mathew & Trish: granddaughters: Shaylend (Jacob), Britney, Karley & great-granddaughter, Emma of Kindersley, SK; daughter, Erin & Daniel: grandsons: Ryand, Pangman, SK & Brandon, Red Deer, AB; sister, Linda (Rick) Phillips, Winnipeg, MB; sister-in-law, Sharon Cameron, St. Albert, AB. Mom was born and raised at the Saskatchewan Hospital in North Battleford where she had very fond memories. Some of her fondest memories where while working at Craig Bros. Dept. store, the Coop Creamery, and the Saskatchewan Hospital. She was very active in the Royal Canadian Legion for many years. Mom loved curling, gardening, picnicking, going to the lake, and just spending time with family and friends. The family would like to send a special “thank you” to all the care providers, especially DR. T. Gabruch, the many Homecare aids, Homecare nurses, and Palliative care nurses that helped Mom through this difficult time. A Memorial service will be held at a future date. Ph 306-244-5577 We love you Mom, rest in peace. ____________________________________________________ MICHAYLUK: Eugene Michayluk passed away on Friday, Nov. 22, 2013 at Battlefords Union Hospital, North Battleford, SK. He was born in Wakaw, SK on June 30, 1926, but grew up in St. Julien, SK. When a teenager, his parents moved to Prince Albert. He continued his schooling in Prince Albert and later was hired in the business office of Victoria Union Hospital. He accepted the position of Hospital Administrator in Davidson, 1956 and helped with the building of the hospital there.

In 1958 an opportunity came up for the Hospital Administrator position in Hafford. He worked many hours when a new hospital was built and spent many hours in 1980 when the Nursing Home came into being. While he was in Hafford, he was a member of the Town Council. He was a Coroner for the district for 48 years. He helped create a golf course at Redberry Lake along with Dr. Ed Nykiforuk, Eugene Zomber, Ed Knoll and Phil Weimer. He treasured his association with the Hafford Ukrainian Orthodox Church and was a member for 50 years. He enjoyed the jam sessions and his many friends who participated. Hats off to the fiddlers in Meadow Sweet Manor and the residents who made his life enjoyable. He leaves to mourn: his wife of 63 years, Elsie, his children: Darcia Tkatchuk (Jim), Myron (Rita) Michayluk, Tim (Audrey) Michayluk and 8 grandchildren: Vince Tkatchuk (Shannon), Terry Tkatchuk, Cheri Tkatchuk, Amanda Bijou (Dale), Darryl and Leanne Michayluk, Katrina and Julianna Michayluk; 3 great-grandchildren: Kaitlin, Traye and Ashton; one brother, Steve of 101 years young. Eugene was predeceased by his parents, Simon and Paraska Michayluk and inlaws, Wasyl and Anna Romanovich. Other members who passed on were his sister, Ann and brothers, Bill, Dick, John and Alex and their wives. HAGEN, Dennis: Dennis Hagen was born September 9, 1927 in North Battleford to Ole “Elmer” and Ella Hagen. His only brother Clifford was born five years earlier. Dennis was married to Lydia Lange on July 3, 1957 and had three daughters, four grandsons, four granddaughters and one great granddaughter.

Dennis passed away on October 29, 2013 at the age of 86.

Excerpts from the eulogy by his daughters: Dad had many interests and talents - he was an excellent carpenter, farmer, trapper, hunter, artist, 4-H teacher, traveler, history buff and he was the biggest kid around - he loved the fair, baseball and hockey and he loved ice cream, bananas and chocolate but mostly he loved his Liddy who took fantastic care of him in the good times and the tough times when she wasn’t feeling too well either. Without his Liddy he would not have been able to stay in his own home for so long or be able to come home from the lodge and enjoy the farm from time to time over the last three years. One of Dad’s first large building projects was helping to build the barn that still stands on his farm yard. He was sixteen when he built this. When he finished school at Robinhood he built Department of Natural Resources buildings at Dore Lake and Buffalo Narrows. Later he worked in construction at Port Alice and Campbell River, BC, Saskatoon and North Battleford. In 1961 dad built the house on the farm and he began farming fulltime in 1963. When dad built something, he built it with pride and he built it to last. Dad had a passion for designing, building and attention to detail. Dad loved to use his building skills to improve the community by helping to build the Medstead and Robinhood halls, Lutheran church and the community store. He always said it had to be built right from the foundation up - he said that was true for everything in life. Building might have been a job but it was also his play. Farming was dad’s second career and while in the nursing home he was always going to be better by spring to help with seeding. Dad loved to travel. He worked in many different locations in his younger years and this love for adventure continued into adulthood. Donna took many interesting trips with Dad - England, France, Denmark, Norway, Italy and Switzerland and Arlene and her family were fortunate to have dad along on a trip to Alaska and the Yukon in 2001. Dad was witty and fun loving. He always had a little funny expression building up - and the twinkle in his eye would prepare you. Dad enjoyed the girls at the nursing home and I know we all will miss that little spark. Dad was optimistic. He managed to cope with Parkinson’s disease for many years. He was always going to get better and believed things were not as bad as you thought. Dad loved his family. He wasn’t always that expressive of this love but it was there. He loved our mom deeply for the past 56 years and we know the meaning of commitment. Dad was always checking to see how Liddy was. He was very proud of us and the grandkids. It is hard to condense 86 years into a few words, but we know that if you have shared some adventures or moments with our Dad, it has left an imprint on you forever. Thank you to everyone for your support, your kindness and the part you played in Dad’s life in making it such a wonderful one. It’s so hard to say goodbye but we know that his memory will continue and his spirit will be here on earth with us and that Dad is now free of pain and at peace. And you’ll always be in our hearts DAD. OBITUARIES BALYCH: Pearl Caroline Balych passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, November 27, 2013. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 57 years, Alexander Balych. Left to cherish her memory are her loving children and grandchildren: Lesya and Gordon Cooper and their daughter Coren of Toronto, Elaine Balych and Jim Welch of Calgary, and Maurice Balych and his children Nina, Ty and Marco of Prince Albert; as well as her sister, Elsie Pernala, nieces, nephews, friends and many students. Pearl Balych was born to William (Wasyl) and Polly (Palahna Sorokan) Maksymchuk on May 15, 1924 at Marlin, Saskatchewan. Her parents had immigrated to Canada from Ukraine in 1912. Pearl received her elementary and middle years education at Canyon School and completed Grades 11 and 12 at the Battleford Collegiate Institute. She subsequently graduated from the Saskatoon Normal School where she obtained a permanent first class teacher’s certificate. Pearl spent seven years as a teacher at rural schools near North Battleford. In her memoirs, Pearl recounted how her early teaching years were filled with all of the activities found only in a country school. She related that she was responsible for teaching Grades 1 to 11. The enrolments were small but the workload was tremendous. The school was the centre of recreational diversions for students, their parents and other adults – dances, ball games, hikes, skating on sloughs, concerts, parties and many more. In addition to classroom teaching duties, Pearl, like many other rural teachers, was expected to do the janitorial work, painting and gardening. Pearl developed close friendships with her students and their families, some of which became lifelong relationships. She was a born teacher and teaching was her first love. After Pearl set aside her formal profession as a teacher (but she never really stopped “teaching”), she took a course in portrait photography and embarked on a new career. She worked in Spencer’s Photo Studio in North Battleford and Meadow Lake, and later managed White Rabbit Photos in Victoria, B.C. In 1955, Pearl and her husband, Alex, moved to North Battleford and bought the Roxy Photo Studio. From that point forward, Pearl and Alex were a highly successful couple. Pearl’s shared success with her husband in a number of business ventures was impressive, but her record of community service and volunteerism was truly remarkable. Pearl had a particular interest and talent for organizing and managing public shows and presentations. From 1962 to 1967, she was the key person in the design and construction of parade floats for All Saints Church. She was the commentator for CKBI-TV for six years and CFQC-TV’s coverage of the North Battleford parade for 12 years. In 1993, Pearl was also the lead person in the construction of the Battlefords’ District Multicultural Exhibition float. In 1963, Pearl organized an international dance festival featuring 110 dancers representing 20 nations on the occasion of our city’s golden jubilee. In 1966, she became a charter member of the Battlefords Toastmistress’ Club. In 1971, she organized and staged a homecoming talent show, in which 1,000 local and district participants took part, some of whom later pursued careers as professional entertainers. From 1962 to 1970, she managed the local auditions for CKBI-TV’s Search for Talent Show, and the Tiny Talent and Spotlight on Talent shows. Pearl also volunteered eight years co-ordinating a Sunday grandstand show for the Battlefords Exhibition Society.Pearl also had an avid interest in history. In 1992, she was appointed to the City of North Battleford Historic Archives committee and served on the provincial wing of the Canadian Ukrainian Congress’s Nation Building Committee. Pearl’s involvement with the St. John Ambulance Brigade 295 is especially noteworthy. She joined the nursing and ambulance division in 1970 and remained an active member until 1989, achieving the rank of sergeant. In 1972, Pearl was selected to pose for the province’s promotional brochure, “A Call to Serve.” In 1974, she qualified for a casualty simulation certificate. In 1981, Governor General Ed Schreyer presented Pearl with the St. John Serving Sister medal. Finally, in 1984, Pearl served with the medical section at the Fourth Saskatchewan Summer Games in North Battleford. Along with her husband, Alex, Pearl was heavily involved with the Battlefords Chamber of Commerce.

From 1974 to 1980, she was receptionist, secretary, tour guide and responsible for other duties as well. In 1980, Pearl was appointed as interim commissioner (the first woman to hold this post) for the Battlefords Chamber of Commerce. Pearl had a special interest in our city’s older citizens. So, it should be no surprise that she would devote time and energy to help where she could. From 1981 to 1982, she served as recreation director for 140 seniors at the River Heights Lodge where, many years later she would return as a resident. Pearl’s well-deserved awards, medals and recognitions are a testament to her extraordinary work and volunteerism. Early in her life (1939), Pearl was awarded a scholarship to attend the Battlefords Collegiate Institute. She also won public speaking competitions at Glaslyn in 1939, the North Battleford Rotary public speaking medal in 1941 and again in 1942. In 1972, she was selected to take the salute from the RCMP Musical Ride. In 1975, she received the Priory Vote of Thanks from the Order of St. John. Pearl was greatly honoured as North Battleford’s citizen of the year in 1981.

Finally in 2010, Pearl was inducted into the Frontier Mall Wall of Fame. Pearl’s many community endeavours reflected her desire to serve and help, but she also possessed an adventurous spirit. For example, in the summer of 1947, Pearl and her sister, Elsie, made the trip to Anchorage, Alaska, and back, in a Model A Ford. Of course, constructing floats, arranging talent shows for grand stand shows and public speaking were also adventures. Pearl met her husband, Alex Balych, in 1952 on a Saskatchewan Transportation Company bus that was travelling from Meadow Lake to North Battleford. On the same day, Alex told his brother Bud that he had met the beautiful, ambitious young lady he was going to marry. Three years later, Pearl finally said, “I do.” Pearl and Alex enjoyed a long and wonderful marriage – a true romance from beginning to end.

BURGESS, Argie (1909 – 2013) It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our Argie, at the age of 104, on November 28, surrounded by her family.

She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Kathy (Sam Rigakis), Angie (David Schreck); grandchildren Sylvia, Thomas (Carmen); great-grandchildren Ryan, Ava; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Many thanks to Dr. Laszlo Takats for his many years of exceptional care. Born in Mazeika, Greece, Argie and her brother Tino, orphaned very young, were raised by their grandparents. As teenagers, they were sent to Edmonton to live with their aunt and uncle. Argie is fondly remembered as the first Greek School teacher in Edmonton. In 1937, she married George and they moved to North Battleford, SK where he owned the Savoy Cafe. Summers were spent at Metinota Beach on Jackfish Lake where life-long friendships were forged. At 91, Argie moved to Edmonton where she lived with Kathy and Sam. She was an avid bridge player and knitter. A remembrance of life will be held at a later date. A grave side service by the family will occur at a later date. Any memorial contributions can be directed to the Long Term Care Facility at the Riverside Health Complex, Turtleford; or the Island Lake Bible Camp care of the Turtleford Baptist Church.

Helvi leaves to mourn her passing: three children: Robert (Faye) Carlson of Innisfail, Alberta, Karen O’Hare of Lacombe, Alberta and Diane (Jim) Mosimann of Edam, Saskatchewan; 6 Grandchildren; 10 Great Grandchildren; three brothers, Charlie (Dorothy) Kivimaa, Harold (Darlene) Kivimaa and Jimmy (Irene) Kivimaa. Helvi was predeceased by her husband, Gustave Carlson; sister, Minerva Bergen and brother, Vilho Kivimaa. The Funeral Service for Helvi was conducted from Livelong Community Hall on Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Dan Gies officiating. The eulogy was given by her daughters, Karen O’Hare and Diane Mosimann. The hymns sung, “In The Garden” and “When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder” were accompanied by Ruth Schimpf. The duet, “In The Sweet By And By” was performed by Wilfred and Darlene Hamm. The active pallbearers were Frank Denny, Rick Denny, Rob Denny, Shawn Kivimaa, Brent LaClare and Robert Mosimann. Interment was held in the Livelong Cemetery. Donations in memory of Helvi may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, Riverside Health Complex and United Way. McCaw Funeral Service Ltd., of Lloydminster, Alberta administered the funeral arrangements.

Weighing the eternal worth of a human soul In 1873, when Jules Verne published his novel, Around the World in 80 Days, that possibility was considered remarkable. And it was, given the means of transportation available over a century ago.

Today, jet planes have accomplished the feat in well under 80 hours. At least in terms of travel, our globe has shrunk considerably.

Yet our planet is full of wonders and wealth, some still to be fully explored and exploited. From the highest mountains to the depths of the oceans, and in the remote darkness of Earth’s mines, human beings have gone in search of riches and resources that can literally change their lives, and even the course of nations.

It’s doubtful that an accurate monetary value could be placed upon all the wealth of the world. But many individuals are rich in financial terms, and getting richer. It used to be that millionaires were looked upon as fabulously wealthy, but not any more. For someone to have more than a million dollars in cash and assets is now relatively common. There are now over 1,400 billionaires, some possessing 70 to 80 billion dollars. Their combined wealth is some $5.4 trillion.

The answer is often: just a little more. As Solomon puts it in the book of Ecclesiastes, “He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver; nor he who loves abundance, with increase. This also is vanity.”

(Ecc. 5:10) The other pertinent question is: What’s to be done with accumulated wealth?

The response of a rich man, in a parable of Jesus, was to live it up. He said to himself, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.” (Lk. 12:19) But God said: “Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?” (vs. 20; cf. Ps. 49:17; I Tim. 6:7) To see the purpose of this life in terms of acquisition and the accumulation of possessions is short-sighted. It

fails to consider eternity and prepare for it. As the Lord Jesus put it, “What profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Matt. 16:26) Even the wealth of all the world is not worth the sacrifice of one’s eternal soul.

That’s the conclusion reached by a popular musician of a century ago. Will Thompson (1847-1909) was dubbed by the newspapers “the millionaire songwriter.”

His secular and patriotic ballads were enormously popular, and he was making a great deal of money. But evangelist Dwight Moody challenged him to start writing songs of spiritual value, using his talents for the Lord.

No, they brought a token amount of money, a container of perfume and some embalming fluid.

The significance of those gifts has been well publicized over the centuries.

Gold represented royalty and the Kingship of the Christ Child. The costly aroma of frankincense evoked the fragrance of His priestly role in redemption (and, researchers at Carndiff University in Wales have suggested, it was considered a herbal remedy because it contained an active ingredient that helps relieve arthritis). And myrrh? In recognition of His reason for coming, His sacrificial death on Calvary.
