Campaign is on to save the 1158

The campaign is on to “save the 1158.”

The 1158 is a locomotive located at the Western Development Museum in North Battleford. The locomotive, now out of service, was built in 1913 for the Canadian Northern Railway, whose railway line is credited with spurring the growth of North Battleford to city status at that time.

To celebrate that history, the effort is on to restore the 1158. But the work to preserve and restore the engine requires funds.

On Wednesday, the Western Development Museum launched the Save the 1158! Campaign, to raise $200,000 towards the restoration of the engine. Remaining money will also go towards the stock car, flatcar and the caboose.

Already, the campaign is off to a good start as Dick Scotton of the Western Development Museum Volunteers Association presented a cheque for $60,000. The money was raised through their efforts in the community raising funds for the museum.

In addition, the WDM’s Conservation and Collections department has matched that donation, bringing the total raised to $120,000.

That means there is another $80,000 to go in order to have all the funds in place to do all the work needing to be done on the locomotive.

The efforts started in April when Moody’s Equipment provided assistance in moving the 1158 down the track about 300 feet to a location where the work could be done.

protect it from the elements and prevent hazardous material from being exposed to the public. Work then commenced on the initial heavy-cleanup work of the engine.

“Basically what we’ve done so far is to remove the rusted pieces of it, to expose the pressure vessel, the cylinders, to assess the condition of it,” said Tim Pomeroy, conservation manager. ”We’ve stripped the cab down to assess the condition of it and take components of it for restoration,” said Tim Pomeroy.

However, the work has come to a standstill due to the lack of funds. Raising the full $200,000 will al-

low them to move forward with the next phase of the project: the cosmetic restoration of the look of the locomotive.

The idea is to bring the engine back to looking the way it would have looked back in the early 20th Century. That involves media blasting to expose the bare steel, then it will be primed, the body work will be done, the front cylinder will be repaired, and it will be freshly repainted “to be a great representation of what the locomotive should look like,” said Pomeroy.

As a tribute to Canadian Northern’s role in developing North Battleford, the 1158 will be painted

and lettered as “Canadian Northern,” using Canadian Northern colours, as it would have appeared if it were brand-new.

Pomeroy noted he doesn’t know of any locomotives currently painted as Canadian Northern, as others still in existence are painted in Canadian National colours.

In all, it should take six weeks to finish the restoration of the engine, and the entire project should be done by next summer, including the work on the stock car, the flatcar and caboose.

The stock car was sandblasted in recent months and will be ready for its final coat of paint. The ca-

boose will also be repainted in Canadian Northern colours.

The plan for the flat car is to get it into good condition so a steam tractor with a threshing machine could be placed on it, as an example of how to move machinery in those days.

The 1158 was retired by Canadian National in 1959, and Pomeroy believes it is a good candidate for restoration, because the pieces are still in place and it is in original condition.

“This is going to be actually a showpiece. People will drive to see this,” said Pomeroy. “It’s a real credit to the fact we have it.”

“North Battleford would not be here to this extent that it is today if the railroad had not gone through North Battleford.”

She says the 1158 will be a major attraction for visitors to the museum once it is fully restored.

“You drive by on Highway 16 and you’ll see this beautiful, shining piece of equipment, broadcasting to everybody what we’re doing at the museum, and how we’re restoring and preserving Saskatchewan’s history.”

Canadians’ US$38-million-a-day gift to Americans

VICTORIA, B.C./Troy Media/ - President Donald Trump has said Canada’s energy exports are unfair to the U.S. He’s clearly oblivious that we’ve given Americans the biggest trade gift ever to flow from one country to another because of our self-inflicted inability to access offshore markets with Canadian oil.

After almost a decade and more than $1 billion spent on planning and regulatory filings, five major oil-export pipelines remain unbuilt, leaving us with no choice but to sell our oil to U.S. buyers at below world prices. Depending on the world price and other factors, the resulting captive-market discount has been as much as US$10 per barrel on the 3.8-million barrels per day exported to the U.S. That amounts to a US$38-million daily gift to Americans, who then export their oil at full international market price.

But how can one criticize Trump for his lack of awareness of this expensive giveaway when our federal government, along with the governments of every province except Alberta and Saskatchewan, have no comprehension of these facts?

Meanwhile, interminable regulatory delays have stymied more than $100 billion of proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) export projects aimed at Asian markets, and discounted Canadian natural gas finds it way to newly-constructed LNG export facilities in Louisiana and Texas to be exported at the full international price.

And it gets worse. While the Trump administration streamlines regulatory approvals for the construction of American oil pipelines and LNG export facilities,

Canada has done the opposite. This has led Canadian oil and gas producers, including my former company Encana, to move tens of billions of investment dollars and many jobs south of the border. And Enbridge’s recent $37-billion acquisition of Houston-based Spectra Energy demonstrates that Canadian pipeline companies are also looking to the U.S. for regulatory-friendly growth.

Canada has become one of the world’s most successful democracies because of our sound, constitutionallybased laws governing political, legal and regulatory matters. The National Energy Board, which administers petroleum industry laws and regulations, is internationally respected for its technical expertise, fairness and professionalism.

During the three decades my team and I spent building Encana into what became the largest Canadian-based energy company, we invested tens of billions of dollars, creating tens of thousands of high-quality jobs for employees, contractors and suppliers across the country.

We paid billions of dollars in government royalties and income tax. Our success helped thousands of shareholders build their futures.

This is but one company’s human and economic impact. There are scores of others, large and small, that made the oil and gas industry a Canadian economic cornerstone. None of this could have happened without confidence in our country’s laws and regulations, and the governments responsible for enforcing them.

If Encana wished to build a pipeline or a processing plant, we worked with affected communities to minimize negative impacts and paid fair compensation where appropriate. We applied to regulatory authorities who gave our project careful technical and environmental exami-

nation. The hearing process included consideration of the views of those directly impacted and was conducted with an awareness of the economic cost of unnecessary delay.

As I prepared to retire in 2006, the term “social licence” began to enter the regulatory lexicon. It eventually came to mean that almost any person or group could claim a voice about a project with a legitimacy equal to that of the people directly impacted by the project. And it marked the beginning of the end of timely, cost-aware regulatory processes. As the social-licence snowball gained momentum, it accumulated anti-fossil-fuel zealots, multinational environmental groups, aboriginal bands claiming control over huge tracts of “traditional lands,” and scores of others opposing projects for whatever reason.

The result has transformed regulatory proceedings that would have previously taken weeks into multiyear events with skyrocketing costs that either delay or kill the project. Enbridge’s Northern Gateway oil-export pipeline is a lamentable example. The original application was filed in 2010.

After four years and half a billion dollars of expenditures, the project gained conditional federal approval from the government of Stephen Harper in 2014. This was followed a year later by a moratorium from Justin Trudeau’s government on oil tankers on B.C.’s northern coast which, if fully implemented, would stymie the project.

Then in November 2016, Prime Minister Trudeau announced a reversal of the federal government’s approval, stating that “the Great Bear Rainforest is no place for an oil pipeline,” even though that “Great Bear Rainforest” designation didn’t even exist during the regulatory process.

Besides this political betrayal of Canada’s regulatory laws, the oil industry’s hopes for international market access have seen TransCanada’s Keystone XL project rejected by then-U.S. President Barack Obama, also for purely political reasons. And its proposed Energy East Pipeline faces opposition from municipal and provincial governments, plus aboriginal groups in Ontario and Quebec, while both provinces continue to hold their hands out for equalization grants funded by the oil revenues they oppose.

That leaves Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain project, which miraculously made it through the whole sociallicence gauntlet to gain full approval in late 2016. Yet the recent B.C. election has delivered an NDP/Green Party coalition vowing to use “every tool in the toolbox” to stop Trans Mountain.

The Canadian Constitution gives the federal government the unequivocal right to approve the project, but it will require unwavering determination on the part of Trudeau and his cabinet to enforce that right.

This is the final chance to end the ruinous giveaway of billions of dollars to the Americans while giving the beleaguered oil industry and its millions of employees their first glimmer of hope.

And if this project fails, why would anyone invest in our oil and gas industry again?

Whether they like the project or not, Canadians had better hope that Kinder Morgan is able to complete its pipeline. Any other outcome would be a failure of our democracy to enforce the constitutional rule of law that we all depend upon for our fundamental freedoms and justice.

Golf club asks town for $150,000 grant

Members of the North Battleford Golf and Country Club, led by board president Chad Gartner, gave a presentation at last week’s Battleford town council meeting.

The Golf and Country Club is asking for $150,000 from the town, as part of a $3.7 million upgrade project to take place over 10 years.

Battleford councillors had questions to ask, but made no decision.

Gartner said the 10-year plan includes redesigning some holes, upgrading tee boxes, tree planting to improve fairway drainage, an electric cart compound, an improved practice facility, and a potential clubhouse expansion. A goal of the upgrades would involve

minimizing water consumption, and ongoing maintenance.

Gartner said it’s been 20 years since the course’s “last long range plan.”

Course redesign plans involve Browning Designs Inc., which has also worked on Kananaskis Golf and Country Club outside of Calgary.

Other fundraising efforts from the Golf and Country Club include a possible big event every year, such as a concert.

The Golf and Country Club is also seeking funds from the City of North Battleford.

Councillors asked questions, including what percentage of the course’s membership lived in Battleford. Gartner said 20 per cent out of a current total of 304, although he said these numbers don’t rep-

resent everyone who plays the course.

Gartner said his group is open to funds from the town coming in either a lump sum or a series of payments.

To illustrate how much $150,000 would affect the town’s budget, Chief Administrative Officer John Enns-Wind said the ask would be equivalent to about a five per cent tax increase for Battleford residents, or cutting elsewhere in future budgets.

“We’re not disputing it’s a big ask, we’re not saying you should increase taxes in Battleford by five per cent, although as a resident I’d be willing to pay that,” board member Paula Scherr said. “We get it. We know what the municipalities are up against. It’s an amenity to the town and to the city though.”

Waste transfer station to be built in Battleford Public will have access

If all goes according to plan, Battleford will see a waste transfer station early in the new year.

On July 17, Battleford Town Council approved a proposal from Loraas to build a waste transfer station. To be located directly south of 13th Street West, and adjacent to the town’s decommissioned landfill site, the proposed building is to be 7,560 square feet, made of steel, with a concrete floor. Once full, waste would be transported to a landfill south of Marshall.

Assistant General Manager of Loraas Environmental Services Aaron Beres said the waste station will be enclosed, meaning no waste would be stored outside the facility, and pests and vermin wouldn’t be attracted to it.

The facility will be fenced and doors closed. He added noise from transferring waste would be enclosed

within the building, as would smell.

“For the most part, you won’t really be able to tell what’s happening inside, because the intention is that it’s a self-contained facility,” Beres said.

The facility would also give residents an opportunity to drop off items, including appliances, scrap metal, used oil, scrap tires and electronics for recycling. Plans also feature regular recycling bins.

Public hours would be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday to Sunday.

Beres said there will be no additional charges for residents or non-residents, and no charge for people who’d want to bring recycling. Charges begin when people bring excess waste items, as there would be a cost to transfer them to a landfill. Chief Administrative Officer John EnnsWind said he currently doesn’t know what those charges would be.

tors and that the facility could be built by January 2018, but timelines depend on when concrete can be finished, as different processes are used in freezing temperatures. Beres said he’s confident crews can complete the concrete before the end of construction season.

According to EnnsWind’s administrative report, preliminary figures show the waste transfer station could save the town approximately $48,000 during the first year, and potentially more each year after that as the facility’s use would be expected to increase.

Councillor Kevin Russell was enthusiastic about the proposal.

“I think it’s awesome,” Russell said.

Amarjit Mahil named new director of finance

The City of North Battleford has turned to one of its current employees to take over as director of finance.

He is Amarjit Mahil, who has worked for the city since August 2015 as finance manager. While in that role he has worked on the last couple of city budgets.

He began his new role a week ago and replaces David Gillan, who left as director of finance at the end of last month.

Mahil, who holds a CGA/CPA designation and has 15 years of experience, was introduced at Monday’s meeting by City Manager Jim Puffalt.

As well, Mahil introduced Margarita Pena who has taken over Mahil’s former job as financial manager. She is a designated CPA and her first day on the job was Monday.

In his remarks to council, Mahil looked forward to his new role with the city.

ARC banner project celebrates 150 Submitted

To celebrate Canada 150, ARC Creative Studio is hosting a Colours for Canada 150 banner project. Participants have created 150 banners that are 12 inches wide by six feet long. These banners will be hung at the Western Development Museum from July 18 to Sept. 1 and will be on exhibit for Those Were The Days events at the museum.

It is an exciting project that involves painters from ARC Creative Studio members, Bonaventure Lions Club, Royal Bank staff and families, Concern for Youth, Drummond Hill, BTEC, Battlefords Immigration Resource Center, Sakewew High School, McKitrick School, North Battleford Comprehensive High School Art Class, École Père Mercure, North Battleford Art Club, Rivers’ Edge Quilters, Home Schooling program, family groups, Saskatchewan Hospital Library and Battlefords Boys and Girls Club with support from the museum, Ultraprint, Discovery Co-op Hardware,

U12 Bandits repeat provincial win Josh Greschner Staff Reporter

The U12 Battleford Bandits are provincial champs again. Given their performance this past season, it shouldn’t be surprising.

The Bandits went 18-4-1 on the season, and went un-

defeated in the provincials tournament in Estevan on the July 15 weekend.

“They swept the whole tournament and won six of their games by a pretty good margin,” Coach Darren Russell said.

The Bandits also won provincials last year. This

year was Russell’s first year coaching. He credits the players’ skill as a reason for their success.

“All our kids are really strong batters,” Russell said. “Our kids hit for power, not for contact.”

He added that defence was very good too, starting

with pitching.

“Our starting pitcher is probably the best in Saskatchewan in U12 B,” Rus-

sell said. “We have a good core group of kids behind her, with really good fundamentals. Our back catch-

er is amazing, and I don’t know if it’s our group of girls, but they seem a lot better than kids their age.”

Coghill named NSRBL MVP Staff

The voting is done and pitcher Jerad Coghill of the Border City Blue Jays has been named the 2017 NSRBL Most Valuable Player.

The announcement has been posted on the NSRBL’s website. In 2017, Coghill posted a 5-0 record with an ERA of 1.40, striking out 38 batters in 30 innings. His batting average was .414, with 12 hits in 30 plate appearances.

Finishing second in the league voting was Kyle Palmer of the North Battleford Beavers while Rhett

Feser of the Unity Cardinals finished third in voting.

He would make a friend wherever he went because he had the type of personality that was approachable and easy to talk to. His family was his pride and joy and he will forever live on in their hearts and minds as a sticking plate, a benchmark with which to measure the accomplishments and values of our own lives. Safeguard our waters – Clean, drain, dry your boat Well, fishing season is well underway and the fish are biting. As many of you may be aware, there is a threat to our provincial waters that we want all anglers and boaters to be aware of. Aquatic invasive species such as zebra and quagga mussels pose a significant danger to our fisheries and water infrastructure in Saskatchewan. This has been a huge problem in many southern states and eastern Canada and it is now a real threat to our clean waters.

These aquatic invaders pose several threats to our waters: Valuable sportfish populations could be damaged as the zebra mussels in their vast numbers outcompete other organisms that fish eat. Simply put, they will disrupt our aquatic food chain.

The mussels attach themselves to hard surfaces and plug water intake structures such as water treatment plants and large power plants. Maintenance of these structures in areas already infested with zebra mussels cost millions of dollars annually.

As they are large filter feeders, these mussels can consume organic pollutants, passing them up the food chain to any fish or waterfowl that may prey on them.

Back in the 1980s, these nasty little critters made their way to North America in the ballast tanks of ocean-going ships. They are slowly making their way from the east and have been found in Manitoba and in border-states such as Minnesota, Montana and North Dakota.

Zebra mussels get their name from the striped pattern of their shells and can grow to a maximum length of about 50 millimetres. A single female zebra mussel can lay up to a million eggs in one year. Zebra mussel larvae can also survive in water contained in bait buckets, bilges, ballast bags or any other water moved from an infested lake or river.

Zebra mussels can be transferred from one waterbody to another easily as they can live out of water for up to seven days.

They attach themselves to boats, nets, docks, swim platforms, boat lifts, and can be moved to a new waterbody on any of these objects. They also can attach to aquatic plants.

The Government of Saskatchewan is focusing on watercraft inspections, disinfecting high-risk watercraft entering the province and raising awareness about the issue. But we need your help.

To prevent the spread of these invasive species, staff from the Ministry of Environment, including conservation officers, will conduct road-side inspections at various locations across the province. If you happen to pass by one of

these locations, please slow to 60 km/hr and follow any signs or instructions.

The Canada Border Services Agency is also working with the province by screening incoming boats from the United States for signs of aquatic invasive species. If they pose any type of a risk, these boats will be ordered to the closest decontamination site.

Saskatchewan has two decontamination units that will make their way around the province over the summer.

Remember, before returning home from out of province, visiting or moving between waters within the province – please remember to CLEAN, DRAIN and DRY your watercraft and all related equipment to ensure it is free of invasive species.

We can all play a part in protecting our waters by doing the following: CLEAN and inspect the watercraft, trailer, equipment and all gear that made contact with the water.

Remove all visible plants, animals and mud. Scrub/ scrape grainy surfaces that feel like sandpaper, as this could be young mussels too small to see. Inspect the watercraft, trailer and vehicle.

DRAIN all onboard water from the motor, live well, bilge, and ballast tanks. Leave plugs out during transport and storage.

Make sure the hull of the boat is above the plug hole when checking to see if water is in the ballast area under the deck of the boat.

This is best accomplished at the boat ramp when pulling boat out of water on an incline. This is also the time to drop the

motor’s leg and drain engine water out of the leg.

DRY your watercraft, equipment and all related gear completely after each use, preferably for at least five days while leaving compartments open to dry.

This is a practice we want all boaters and watercraft users to follow, even if you are only moving between waters within the province. We need to act as if these invasive mussels are already here and make Clean, Drain and Dry part of our normal routine.

If you find or suspect aquatic invasive species, report any sightings to the nearest Ministry of Environment office or call the TIP Line at 1-800-6677561.

A time when nothing but one answer will do

There are two related sayings we sometimes use, as the occasion requires. First, there’s anything but. After her surgery she could enjoy eating anything but very spicy food.

Then, there’s nothing but. They wanted nothing but the best for their daughter.

It’s the second of these that we’ll look at here.

“Nothing but” is the more exclusive of the two phrases. It eliminates all possibilities but one. The phrase is used in one of the proverbs found the Bible: “By pride comes nothing but strife” (Prov.

13:10), and we’ve all seen how the boastful knowit-all stirs up arguments and discord around him.

Other phrases in Scripture suggest something similar. Nothing except, and no other, say it, as do words such as only, or alone. Not surprisingly, such exclusive terms are used in the Bible of God. Transcendent, infinite, and eternal, there is no other being remotely like Him. “We know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God but one” (I Cor. 8:4).

“Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honour and glory forever and ever. Amen” (I Tim. 1:17). “Who shall

not fear You, O Lord, and glorify Your name? For You alone are holy” (Rev. 15:4).

The Bible speaks of God’s plan of salvation in the same way. All roads lead to Rome, they used to say of the mighty Roman Empire. Many different paths will get you there. But that won’t work with the path to God. There is only one, and He has spelled it out clearly in His Word.

How can a sinner be forgiven, and merit the heavenly home the Lord is preparing? Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (Jn. 13:6). “This is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life” (I Jn. 5:11-12). “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31).

God’s promise is, “that whoever believes in Him [Jesus, our Saviour] should not perish but have everlasting life” (Jn. 3:16). “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). “For no other foundation can anyone lay

than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ” (I Cor. 3:11).

This theme was taken up by a hymn writer named Richard Slater (1854-1939). A gifted musician, he became

a music teacher and a member of the Royal Albert Hall Orchestral Society. After he put his faith in Christ, in 1882, he concentrated his efforts on a ministry of music with the Salvation

Army. Slater wrote over five hundred songs, and came to be known as “the father of Salvation Army music.”

For a number of years, the Army had been making frequent use of Robert Lowry’s gospel song, “What can wash away my sin? / Nothing but the blood of Jesus.”

Richard Slater tells us, “I wondered if I could be honoured in making a song on similar lines for Army use.” He didn’t simply imitate the song, but hoped to equal its simplicity and clarity.

The result is a hymn for which he wrote both words and music.

“Jesus, see me at Thy feet, / Nothing but Thy blood can save me; / Thou alone my need canst meet, / Nothing but Thy blood can save me. / Lord, I cast myself on Thee, / Nothing but Thy blood can save me; / From my guilt, oh set me free, / Nothing but Thy blood can save me. / No! No! Nothing do I bring / But by faith I’m clinging / To Thy cross, O Lamb of God! / Nothing but Thy blood can save me.”

Probably some of the most difficult times of my life have been those years when we and our sons and their families lived two provinces apart; I felt lost without them, a feeling that even regular phone conversations didn’t fully assuage. Not only that, my siblings and I have always lived long distances away from each other and that’s also been a source of sadness to me. In our lives at least, it seems that the people we love

Road Through Time: The Story of Humanity on the Move

Story of Humanity on the Move may well be the most intriguing archaeological analysis since man set wheels on pathways.

Partly memoir, it’s really a condensed history of civilization as seen through its roads.

Soderstrom tells the story of humanity tramping through time, exploring, discovering, and moving on. The great trek started with early humans leaving Africa possibly as early as 80,000 years ago and continues to this day.

One of the most fascinating chapters is also the most mysterious.

Soderstrom outlines possible routes humans may have taken to reach North America. Some facts are known. She notes, for instance, that “every Native American throughout the western hemisphere shows common kinship with people who now live or who did live in parts of Northern Siberia.” But much is conjecture, so she titles the chapter “Mystery Roads.”

The Hunters fire: As it happened 25 years ago

Last week marked a solemn anniversary in the City of North Battleford.

July 20 marked the 25th anniversary of the fire that destroyed Hunters Trailer and Marine in North Battleford’s north end.

Hunter’s was a mainstay of the business community, putting North Battleford on the map with a massive inventory of R.V.’s, boats and other equipment.

The fire was major news not just in North Battleford but across Saskatchewan.

Shown here are some examples of the news coverage that ran in the NewsOptimist in the Wednesday, July 22, edition of the newspaper, as well as subsequent editions, about the fire story.

The front page of the Wednesday paper ran a photo, taken by then-deputy editor Doug Collie, of a firefighter battling the blaze.

The accompanying caption stated: “This firefighter is one of about 40 from the city and town who battled a spectacular fire which broke out Monday evening at Hunters Trailer and Marine on Highway 4. The blaze, which ripped through the giant complex from about 8:30 p.m. to about 1 a.m., completely destroyed the northern two-thirds of the structure – the trailer and marine portion. The company’s vice-president in charge of operations, Mike Gauthier, has estimated total damage at $7 to $10 million.

The sports shop, protected by a brick wall, was saved, although it has suffered smoke and water damage.

Hunters owner Harry Bondar says he intends to open up shop again as soon as he can, noting he’s been in the business for 47 years and has built it up to the point where it’s an integral part of the community. Hunters officials began the massive

clean-up job today.”

According to the news report of the fire by Collie and by Bonni Fingler that ran on the front page, the fire department had been called to the scene at 8:35 p.m. after a couple of employees, doing after-hours work in the repair section in the north portion of the building, noticed a smell of smoke.

By the time fire crews arrived, the fire was already well under way.

According to the report, five firefighters were rushed to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, and two remained in hospital overnight for observation.

It turned out one of the firefighters who went to hospital was Kevin Steinborn, now a city councillor for the City of North Battleford. He recalled in a 2016 interview that the Hunters fire was the worst fire he ever dealt with. “That was a massive fire and scary situations for everybody,” he said.

Not surprisingly, the blaze drew a crowd of onlookers. On pages two and three, a story from Fingler ran about how the spectacular fire drew hundreds of spectators to the Fairview area.

“No one was killed, but there were a few near misses – and a lot of upset fire and police – as motorists crowded to see the spectacle and failed to keep their eyes on the road.”

There was a report on page two of one notable business directly impacted: “Vanguard, which manufactures motorhomes and other products for Hunters Trailer and Marine and other retailers, will be the first hit by the destruction of the superbusiness, since Hunters is a good retail marketplace for its products.”

The fire aftermath would end up dominating future editions of the News-Optimist in the following weeks.

The July 26 edition of the News-Optimist had further stories about the fire, reporting that 40 fulltime employees out of the staff of 65 were being laid off.

The front page of the Aug. 2 edition included a photo from Bonni Fingler of Premier Roy Romanow, Hunters representative Blair Bondar, and Bat-

tlefords MLA Doug Anguish as they surveyed the damage. A story that ran beside it with the headline “Help for Hunters coming if it’s needed, Premier says.”

Without question, the Hunter’s fire story was one of the biggest stories the News-Optimist has covered in its long history.

In an editorial that ran on the commentary page in the aftermath of the fire

July 22, 1992, the headline stated “Hunters fire a terrible blow.”

“We hope all those involved in this terrible event will somehow find the strength to put it behind them and get on with the task of ensuring Hunters is rebuilt as quickly as possible – and stays in the community.”
