Time To Remember

Remembrance Day ceremonies took place at various locations in the Battlefords Monday, to commemorate those who fought in battle for Canada. In North Battleford, services were commemorated by Royal Canadian Legion Branch No.70 where a parade was formed that made its way from the legion branch to John Paul II Collegiate for services. The parade marched to the cenotaph shortly after the service concluded for laying of wreaths. The service in North Battleford was attended by a number of dignitaries including Mayor Ian Hamilton. In Battleford, Legion Branch No. 9 formed a parade that made its way from 22nd Street to St. Vital School, where services were held. Those in attendance at the Battleford service included Mayor Derek Mahon and Battlefords MLA Herb Cox. Following the service the parade made its way to the cenotaph in Battleford for the laying of wreaths there. Services were also held at Saskatchewan Hospital for Legion Branch No. 349 and Auxiliary and at the Gold Ridge Centre for Métis and First Nations Veterans Remembrance Day Service.

Last of Sisters of the Child Jesus departing

A farewell to the last member of the Sisters of the Child Jesus to serve in the Battlefords was held at St. Joseph Calasanctius Church recently, during a visit to the parish from the head of the diocese, Bishop Albert Thévenot of Prince Albert.

Sr. Josephine Ludwig will be relocating to British Columbia. She and Sister Marie Claire Lauzon, who passed away Aug. 27 at the age of 88, were the last two Sisters of the Child Jesus to reside in North Battleford. Both were retired.

Sr. Josephine served 12 years with the St. Joseph’s parish, and was a classroom teacher for the four years previous. Sr. Lauzon had been in North Battleford since 1967.

The Sisters of the Child Jesus religious women’s order has been present in the community since 1925.

In her remarks at the Oct. 30 celebration, Sr. Marianne Flory, Canada’s liaison to the international order, said, “While we regret having to leave one of our most cherished places of ministry and friendship, we also know that life will go on very well without us.”

Sr. Flory, who served as principal of the Convent of the Child Jesus in North Battleford from 1967 to 1973, said while the sisters may be leaving North Battleford, she was pleased to say that members of the Child Jesus

Family will continue to remain among parishioners in the presence of 14 Associates of the Child Jesus.

“While it is not easy for us – as a congregation or as individuals – to say ‘goodbye’ to a group of people with whom we have lived, served and shared so much for the past 88 years, I am happy that we have this occasion to do so! Our years with you have been blessed in every way,” said Sr. Flory.

The farewell took place Oct. 30. Six Sisters of the Child Jesus attended, three of them from the Prince Albert diocese, as well as three Sisters of the Presentation of Mary from the Battlefords.

The order first came to the Battlefords in 1925 with the arrival of Sr. Jean Gabriel, superior, Sr. Lydie, Sr. Louis de Gonzague, Sr. Berchmans and Sr. Dorothy.

Their goal was to teach at Notre Dame Separate School and to establish a novitiate.

Three novices arrived with them, Sr. Marie Thérèse, Sr. Victorien and Sr. Yvonne de Jésus.

In 1928, the Convent of the Child Jesus was built as a boarding school for boys and girls up to the age of 12. High school classes were added as the students matured and the first graduation was in 1932.

As enrolment rose, the elementary classes were phased out. Eventually a decision was made to discontinue taking boarders, and in 1962, the boys began attending St. Thomas College.

In 1972, an addition of

more classrooms, a library and a gymnasium opened at COCJ. It continued as a girls’ high school until its final year in 1985-86. John Paul II Collegiate, a co-ed Catholic high school, opened in the fall of 1986.

After the school closed, Sisters of the Child Jesus maintained a presence in North Battleford, where they continued to be involved in pastoral ministry.

In her entry in the Encyclopedia of Saskatchewan, Sr. Flory wrote about the origins of the order.

“In 1667, Anne Marie Martel, under the direction of a Sulpician priest, began instructing poor uneducated women in the region of Le Puy, France. In 1896 Bishop Paul Durieu of New Westminster, B.C., requested Sisters of the Child Jesus to come and teach the native children in his territory. Four sisters travelled from France to Canada and began their work at St. Joseph’s Mission, near William’s Lake, B.C. “In 1915, the congregation, based then in North Vancouver, agreed to send sisters to Saskatchewan to carry out domestic work for Bishop Pascal and the many priests who lived in the clergy residence in Prince Albert. In the following years, sisters also came to St. Hippolyte, North Battleford, Albertville, Saskatoon and Jackfish Lake.

They taught in both public and separate schools, nursed, and did pastoral works in parishes, homes and hospitals.”

More caution needed in plan to expand CPP

Some provincial politicians are again trying to make the dubious case that we have a “retirement income crisis” in order to revive calls for a mandatory expansion to the Canada Pension Plan.

While the issue is set to be on the agenda at the annual federal-provincial finance ministers’ meeting in December, the reality is that the case for expanding CPP is built on shaky assumptions about retirement income inadequacy in Canada and on inflated expectations about the benefits of a bigger CPP. Politicians should therefore exercise more caution in their plan to expand CPP. Start with recent claims from Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne and P.E.I. Finance Minister Wes Sheridan that “Canadians are not saving enough” and that current CPP benefits are “just not adequate anymore.” It is claims like these that spawned Sheridan’s proposal for a doubling of the maximum retirement benefit and a virtual doubling of CPP contributions (including a payroll tax hike to 13 per cent from 9.9 per cent).

The pronouncements about retirement income inadequacy simply do not square with the evidence. In 2009, economist Jack Mintz led a group of pension researchers on an extensive probe into the issue. The conclusion: “Overall, the Canadian retirement income system is performing well, providing Canadians with an adequate standard of living upon retirement.” For some lowincome seniors, Old Age Security and the Guaranteed Income Supplement help to provide eligible seniors with income sufficient to prevent poverty. And these programs partly explain why Canada has one of the lowest rates of senior poverty in the developed world.

A key problem with arguments of inadequate savings is the failure to take a comprehensive view of the resources available to Canadians in retirement. Failing to do so overlooks significant components of savings in the form of real estate (Canada has a 69 per cent home ownership rate), non-registered investments and owned businesses.

In fact, a recent Statistics Canada study that accounted for the potential income Canadians could derive from such assets found that senior-led households are actually better off than those headed by younger adults.

Canadians clearly seem more prudent and prepared for retirement than “big CPP” advocates give them credit for.

However, to the extent that a small group of Canadians with modest income are deemed to have inadequate retirement income, more research is required to better

understand who these individuals are and the factors that contribute to their circumstances. But expanding the CPP is a blunt instrument that would affect all working Canadians. And it would be illogical to impose a compulsory increase to the CPP when the current retirement income system is serving the great majority well.

As for the perceived benefits of a CPP increase, here too proponents may be overreaching. Their analysis often ignores a basic economic insight that higher forced savings for retirement through the CPP will likely lead Canadians to reduce their private voluntary savings elsewhere. That means an expanded CPP would not increase overall retirement savings to the extent anticipated but it would change the mix with more savings going in CPP and less in other saving vehicles such as registered retirement savings plans.

A recent Fraser Institute study examined what happened to RRSP contributions when the CPP payroll tax increased to 9.9 per cent in 2003 from 5.0 per cent in 1993. This preliminary analysis found that RRSP contributions actually declined as mandatory CPP contributions increased — a finding consistent across different age and income groups.

Unfortunately, this type of analysis is largely absent from the current CPP debate. The risk, then, is that

the benefits of a mandatory CPP expansion are being overstated. A broader and more complete debate about the CPP would consider the comparative benefits of the CPP (defined benefit in retirement) versus the benefits of RRSPs (flexibility and choice).

With RRSPs, the savings can be used to purchase a home through the Home Buyers’ Plan, to obtain training as part of a transition into a new field of work through the Lifelong Learning Plan, to withdraw in the event of a terminal illness and to transfer fully assets to a beneficiary upon death.

These benefits are lost when Canadians are forced to save more in CPP and offset those increases with decreases in their RRSPs. As our political leaders deliberate expanding the CPP, they would do well to consider the evidence which does not support the notion of a broad retirement income crisis. They also need to consider that a compulsory expansion to CPP could reduce private savings and the flexibility they afford Canadians.

Man succumbs to cold: RCMP Staff RED PHEASANT — Battlefords Rural RCMP say foul play is not suspected in the death of a 48-year-old man on Red Pheasant First Nation Wednesday.

Police say a call was received at about 9:30 a.m. of

an unresponsive man in a ditch on the reserve.

WPD Ambulance also responded and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigation revealed the man, a resident of the reserve, left his home in the early morning hours. Police say

the reason he left has not been determined. According to the RCMP he succumbed to the cold.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death.

The name of the man is not being released out of respect for the family.

Beware of thin ice

Boy rescued from frigid fate Staff A nine-year-old boy testing the thickness of the ice on the North Saskatchewan River Wednesday found himself in “hot� water.

Battlefords RCMP re-

ceived a report of the young boy walking on the river ice and by the time they, North Battleford Fire Department and WPD Ambulance responded the boy had fallen into the water.

The child was taken to the

hospital for precautionary reasons before being released into the care of his parents, police say.

RCMP advise the ice cover on the river remains thin with numerous open areas that remain treacherous.

The provincial government has announced it is moving ahead with several recommendations from the Special Committee on Traffic Safety report.

In a news release Thursday the provincial government announced it is implementing more than half the recommendations from that committee report, which include tougher measures for drinking and driving, increased communication on distracted driving and its dangers and expanded photo radar.

Among the highlights are implementing zero tolerance for drugs or alcohol for all drivers under 19 and for all drivers in the Graduated Driver’s Licensing program; immediate 60-day roadside suspension and three-day vehicle impoundment for any blood alcohol content under .08 for drivers under 19 and all GDL program drivers; immediate licence suspension up to court disposition and a three-day roadside vehicle impoundment for all drivers with a BAC of .08 to .15 or those who refuse a test; mandatory ignition interlock for high BAC offenders; implementing a two-year photo radar pilot project at high risk locations and school zones;

increasing financial penalties for drivers caught going over 35 km/h over the speed limit; and making booster seats mandatory for children under age seven and less than 145 cm in height and 36 kg in weight.

Corresponding legislative amendments for these changes will be introduced in the fall session.

The Special Committee on Traffic Safety was a bipartisan committee that included in its ranks Battlefords MLA Herb Cox. The seven-member committee conducted hearings across the province and submitted their report and recommendations Aug. 30.

The committee was charged with addressing the issue of fatalities on Saskatchewan roads. The government noted in its news release that 184 people were killed on the provincial roads and highways last year.

Minister for SGI Donna Harpauer says the traffic safety action plan being introduced “aims to address this issue as well as other traffic safety concerns with the goal of reducing deaths and injuries on Saskatchewan roads.

We are hopeful these initiatives will have an immediate impact on driving behavior, so we can all benefit from improved traffic safety in the province.�

Drive through road rage investigated Staff Between 6 a.m. Thursday and 6 a.m. Friday Battlefords RCMP responded to more than 20 calls for service.

Thursday

9:57 a.m. — Call from an upset individual claiming she was in line at a drive through in the city and was upset at the driver behind her so she was not going to move until the police came. Would not provide police her name but did claim she was “Kind of a big deal� because she drove a Mercedes. Members on scene a short time later and the subject could not be located.

12:06 p.m. — Several nuisance 911 calls in from a public pay phone on 1700 block of Thompson Crescent. Unknown youth playing with phone.

1:43 p.m. — Hit and run reported on 1300 block of 109th Street. A green car struck a parked white truck on street and three youth exited the suspect vehicle and fled the scene. Suspect car recovered. Possible suspects have been identified and matter remains under

investigation.

8:00 p.m. — 23-year-old male arrested on outstanding warrants for break and enter, theft and failing to appear in court after a vehicle stop. Set to appear in North Battleford Provincial Court Friday at 9:30 a.m.

10:14 p.m. — A 39-yearold male arrested at a residence on the 500 block of 103rd Street after a call of a domestic dispute. Male is alleged to have thrown a coffee mug at a female in the residence and struck her in the head. Victim declined medical attention. Charges of assault with a weapon are currently pending.

The legendary Harry Sharp, Principal of North Battleford Collegiate Institute

At the outset, I must give Harvey Cashmore credit for researching and writing a draft on principal Sharp. I thank him for all his work researching, writing and proofing notable articles. He has accomplished much more than his share and it is greatly appreciated.

Harry Sharp was born in April, 1898 in Ontario. In 1900, at the age of two, Harry moved with his family from Ontario to a farm near Frobisher near Estevan. In 1909, his family moved into the community of Frobisher where Harry completed Grades 1 to 8 by age 11. He completed high school at Oxbow by age 14.

Harry was too young to attend university so following high school graduation, he worked at various jobs for four years. After this rather unfulfilling experience, he enlisted in the 52nd regiment of the Third Division and served for three and a half years in the First World War. Harry also served for four and a half years in the Second World War. Army life did much to instil in Harry the necessity of leadership, team work and discipline. In addition, he acquired a love of fair play and respect for his fellow man.

The First and Second World Wars were major events in Harry’s life. During the hard years of the Second World War, his rise through the ranks was nothing short of phenomenal. Between 1939 and 1945, he rose to the rank of brigadier-general. After the war, he again became a colonel during which time he commanded the Regina Rifles (Harry recalled with pride that these troops were the first to land on the shores of France on D Day).

Those who served under Harry spoke with respect and admiration of his ability to lead. Indeed, if there was one characteristic that defined Harry, it was his outstanding leadership. Maurice Campbell, a long-time teacher at North Battleford Collegiate Institute referred to Harry as a “… born leader.”

Between 1919 and 1923, Harry attended university and also taught in country schools. He was awarded his degree at age 25, after which he was appointed to the position of principal at the NBCI. Accepting the principalship at NBCI was one of two great decisions that Harry made in his life; the other was his marriage to Doris McCarthy. Harry and doris were blessed with four children – Tom, Jack, Mary and Joan. Their home was located at 1332 – 97th St., a half block from the high school, so it was a short walk to work. Harry rarely drove the family car unless it was beyond the city limits. North Battleford was much smaller then. Doris passed away in 1954.

Harry began his administrative and teaching career at NBCI when it was located in Connaught School. The city had accumulated a large debt. To address this problem, the high school on 97th Street was closed in order to save on heating costs. Harry did his part to remedy the problem. He had the students plant potatoes on the grounds (later to become spacious lawns) at the front of the school. Proceeds from sale of the potatoes were used to purchase school equipment. Ordinarily this would have been the board’s responsibility.

When Harry assumed the principalship of NBCI, there was a discipline problem in the school, a problem that was short-lived. At a height of 6’4” with a military background - Harry was not about to put up with nonsense from any student. Throughout Harry’s long tenure as principal of NBCI , he was known as a strong principal and a strong disciplinarian.

Back when Harry was in charge, he was just that – in charge, and there was no mistaking it. Unlike today, his disciplinary methods were straightforward.

Harry did not negotiate with students. He did not counsel students and give them more opportunities to break the rules. The educational language in Harry’s

day was different from today. Students were not given consequences; they were punished.

Many stories have been told of Harry’s methods of discipline. Harvey Cashmore remembered dragging a piece of chalk across a slate blackboard causing an unbearable scrapingscratching sound in history class. The teacher, Mr. Mitchner, simply asked him, “Would you like to go to the office and see Mr. Sharp?”

That did it. No more problems. Harry was able to order the school just by his presence and reputation.

An oft told story concerned Harry, and a Grade 10 boy who was foolish enough to break the rules and be sent to the principal’s office.

Harry boxed his ears but did not think his young charge was sufficiently repentant. So, he threw him out of the school. The boy’s angry father came in to have a word with the principal.

When Harry could not reason with him, he threw him out of the school as well. Did this actually happen? Perhaps. Perhaps not exactly as it was told. Regardless, this is the stuff of legend. Harry was a larger than life figure.

Despite that Harry would tolerate absolutely no disrespect from any student, he had a softer side. On one occasion when Gretchen Shaw was in Grade 11, she and a young man by the name of Andy Wilson had an opportunity to guest figure skate in Jasper, Alta. Unfortunately, she would have to miss a set of mid-term exams. Gretchen’s father insisted that she would, “… have to talk to Mr. Sharp.” Gretchen was “… shaking in my boots,” when she knocked on his office door. But when Mr. Sharp heard her request, he smiled and said, “Well that’s the best news I’ve heard in a long time.”

Harvey Cashmore related that Mr. Sharp taught mathematics and was a very good teacher. He cared about students, their progress, and their success beyond high school. Harvey was an out-of-town student so he was required to get a signed list of the days he had attended school. He found Mr. Sharp easy to talk to, and a kind and caring principal.

Perhaps the Principal’s Message for the 1962-63 (the year Harry retired) yearbook best underscored his feelings for his students and staff: “Since I too am leaving NBCI, I do so with deep regret. In my 40 years of service with the young people of this city, I have had the great pleasure of teaching the sons and daughters of former students. Nothing in my teaching experience has given me so great an uplift … To my staff, I am deeply appreciative of your untiring help and support over the years. I hope I shall have opportunities to visit often with former staff and students.”

During the decades when Harry was principal, male teachers wore suits.

Harry was no exception. He had his suit dry-cleaned as needed. On the hottest days, he might take his suit coat off but never his tie. Harry bought a new suit for every graduation to replace the suit he had worn during the year.

It is customary for principals to be recognized when they retire. But in 1954, a decade before his retirement, Harry was honoured by staff, students, collegiate board members, the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation, and College of Education for 30 years of service at NBCI. Mr. Trout, from the STF, lauded Harry for leading an outstanding school, and for showing no signs of retiring.

College of Education professor, Mr. Darby, noted,”Mr. Sharp is a big man in every way.” Such was the stature and popularity of principal Sharp.

Harry Sharp was the principal of NBCI for 40 years. On Feb.19, 1963, the collegiate board accepted his resignation with regret. On the occasion of North Battleford’s centennial, we laud a great teacher and principal who epitomized the ideal educator of a bygone era. We have been enriched by Harry’s life. And, many hundreds of students from our city have benefited from the strength of character and example of a great man.

BNS win streak ends, but not before first win at home Cardiac Kids treat home town fans to another cliffhanger

There’s a new nickname you can call the Battlefords North Stars after their most recent string of games: the Cardiac Kids.

The team has simply made a habit of taking games right down to the wire as of late – making it far from easy for themselves or, for that matter, their opponents.

“It’s a little stressful but it’s all part of the learning process,” said coach Kevin Hasselberg after yet another nail-biter finish Friday night when the North Stars were home against the Weyburn Red Wings.

The shorthanded North Stars ended up hanging on for dear life for a 2-1 win.

It was their third win in a row but more importantly, it was their elusive first win at home at the Civic Centre this season.

The scoring began with Tanner Quinn in the opening period, but a power play goal by Brian Farkas tied things at 1-1 after one.

There was no scoring in the second though the period was enlivened by some hard hitting including a scrunching hit by Kyle Schmidt on Nick Pouliot at the blue line.

The third period saw the North Stars take advantage of a power play opportunity as Luke McColgan beat Rylan Parenteau to give the North Stars a 2-1 lead.

But that lead proved tenuous late in the game after Dillon Forbes was assessed a five-minute major and an instigator penalty after he retaliated to a hit from behind by Jon Brumwell on Tanner Quinn. Brumwell got a checking from behind penalty and game misconduct after that incident.

Overall, it meant the North Stars were down a man for the remaining 3:45 of the third period. Still, Hasselberg said the team supported Forbes’ actions.

he thought was right under the circumstances,” said Hasselberg. “One of our players went into the boards awkwardly and Dillon felt he needed to address that in his own way.”

and shortly after he marked the empty-netter to end the North Stars’ three-game winning streak. The final score was 3-1 Nipawin.

Despite the loss Saturday it is evident the North Stars are slowly but surely showing improvement as this season progresses, now with a record of 7-13-0-1.

— Coach Kevin Hasselberg The whole bench supported Forbes’ actions, noted Hasselberg, who said the team went out and killed the penalty “because the guys supported what Dillon did and that’s what a team does.

You know, we stand up for each other thick or thin and Dillon did that for Tanner in those circumstances.”

Also coming through in the final minutes was the goaltending of Darren Martin, who stopped 34 Weyburn shots on the night.

The North Stars outshot Weyburn 39-35.

In the final minute the North Stars survived a 6-on-4 situation after the Red Wings pulled their goaltender, and held on to win 2-1 before an excited and particularly enthusiastic crowd of 704. The positive crowd reaction was a big lift for the team both during and at the end of the game.

“It was good to hear the crowd chanting their name and good to see a bunch of smiles on their faces after a hard-fought victory,” said Hasselberg.

The North Stars had no time to rest on their laurels as they headed to Nipawin the next night for a game against the Hawks.

In that contest Nipawin took a 1-0 lead in the first on a goal by Mitch Doell from Carter Danczak and Jayden Piattelli. That goal held up until late in the third period when the North Stars tied it on an Austin Evans goal from Taylor Reich and Kyle Schmidt.

But, with 1:15 remaining, Tad Kozun scored on Martin to give Nipawin the lead

How do you like them now?

The song “How Do You Like Me Now?” by country star Toby Keith blared through the speakers at Mosaic Stadium early Sunday evening, immediately after the Saskatchewan Roughriders had fought back to beat the B.C. Lions 29-25 in the 2013 CFL Western Semifinal.

The song aptly paralleled the thoughts of Rider quarterback Darian Durant who took the team on his broad shoulders and willed them to victory on an absolutely frigid November day. Maybe it was more his legs than his shoulders. The eight-year veteran Rider rushed for 97 yards, including 76 in the fourth quarter, to help Saskatchewan complete the comeback and advance to the western final in Calgary Sunday.

“My team mates call my legs the ‘tree trunks’,” Durant laughed on CKRM radio after the game. “I guess it was about time I used them!”

It was shades of an earlier time in Durant’s career, when his rushing ability made the Saskatchewan offense a three-pronged threat: the receivers, the running

backs and the quarterback coming out of the backfield.

The Lions, who led 17-16 at halftime and 25-16 going into the fourth quarter, could not account for Durant as he romped through massive amounts of green space when the game was on the line.

And, as I woke up the day after the game to write this piece, it came with a tremendous sense of liberation. For those of us who staunchly defend Durant, from being on the radio to coffee row, it was a moment to smile.

Durant proved his supporters, and more importantly his coaches, right.

In the big picture, it had to be even more vindicating for Rider head coach Corey Chamblin. The wolves were lining up outside his door,

ready to pounce if Saskatchewan didn’t pull this game out (notice Rider GM Brendan Taman was given a contract extension in the spring, however, Chamblin was not). The wolves’ howls had been getting louder, spurred on by the Riders’ 3-6 record in the second half of the season I hate those damn wolves.

They are not easily satisfied. Tossing them a win or two in the regular season is like tossing them a steak that they promptly devour, and just as quickly come back for more. But this wasn’t just any win. It was massive.

game, B.C. came with an excellent game plan. They did exactly the opposite of their regular season tendencies on offence and defence and it took the Riders almost the whole game to figure it out.

Lions quarterback Travis Lulay moved the ball at will for much of the opening 45 minutes while the B.C. defence clamped down on the Riders in the red zone, forcing six field goal attempts.

“It takes four quarters,” Chamblin said. “In football, each game will be different.

By B.C. doing what they did, it will allow us to go forth and know how to stay tough.”

That’s right. This thing is far from over and although beating B.C. was a massive hump to get over, it only sets the Riders up for a showdown in Calgary against their mostheated rival with a trip to the Grey Cup on the line. The Stampeders beat the Riders two-out-of-three times in the regular season including a 29-25 outing at McMahon Stadium in Game 17.

“Everything goes out the window in the playoffs; stats, whatever, “ Chamblin continued. “They’ll have some new things for us so we’ll have to be ready. They’ll be a different team.”

Chamblin’s Riders are salivating at the opportunity that is ahead of them, which is the chance to play for the Grey Cup in their own stadium in less than two weeks.

“We love being the underdog!” Durant smiled, referring to the west final. “Special thanks to Rider Nation.

I love you guys. I can’t even explain it. We have the best fans in the world and I appreciate everything.”

With that, perhaps the critics and the wolves, who are dogged and determined and never seem to go away, will in fact go away at least until next season.

And we are left to see if Durant can indeed finish the job and take his team back to the cup.

by Gerry Bristow The first game of the New Horizon curling Tuesday started off with Doreen Dudek’s team trading deuces with Ed Kjargaard. Then the game got nasty and Ed’s team scored a big four. The girls were not to be outdone and they got a three in the second last end that tied the game.

They kept the pressure on so that Ed had nothing but a draw to the button for a win in the final end.

They were not big ends, but when you steal you can’t be greedy. So it was for Bryan Peever over Lyle Darwent.

It was a nice draw by Lyle to keep the game close and then in the next end we saw it even. Then it was the Darwent rink scoring two and that was enough when coming home.

What happened on sheet one also happened on sheet three, but this time it was Big Bad Belyk who racked up the four. That was bad but stealing five on the next end put a nail in the coffin of the Allie Raycraft four and they never had a chance for the balance of the game.

Allan Rogers is off to a bad year and was down by

five before he got on the board and Eugene Korpach’s rink kept the lead from then on.

In the afternoon draw you knew the game was getting serious when they brought out the measuring stick in the second end. That gave the extra point to the Gregoire rink over Ralph Hall and they went one up. He did not stop there and went on by scoring a couple of threes. Hall came back with four but that was not enough.

Doug Puff started out with one but then he gave up 11 before he scored another against the Rod Forester group. Guess who won?

On sheet five it was six to five after the seventh end with Horrell one down coming home. He had last rock in eight but could not get the yellow rock out and Bruce Chadwick came out smiling.

His last rock on the final end was a tad short and Ed Kjargaard had to settle for a tie on the second game he played that day. Six feet more and he would have sent the Krismer rink home without a point.

Hidden wells prove addictive for at least one member

A Rivers’ Edge Quilters’ workshop, “hidden wells,” which was taught by Sandy Cook from Saskatoon, was enjoyed by 11 members.

Sandy taught a technique of making a quilt block and producing a surprise set of hidden wells in the block pattern. It was interesting to see each member with a very different look to their completed blocks, which varied only by their choice of fabric colors. These members have been busy sewing since the workshop Oct. 19. Congratulations Heather, who had her quilt top completed in two weeks and ready to hang at our meeting. She commented

This years provincial Catholic Women’s League Convention was held in Saskatoon on June 3 and 4.

Several Notre Dame ladies along with spiritual Advisor Fr. Gerard Legaspé attended.

For the annual CWL fun day in July, members were joined by other parishioners in attending an entertaining live production of Salt Water Moon in Rosthern.

On Aug. 11th - 14 five Notre Dame members attended the national CWL convention in Regina. With the national theme in mind, five past national CWL presidents relayed their moving personal experiences in, “We have seen the Lord.”

Fr. William McGrattan will be replacing Archbishop Martin Currie as the new national spiritual advisor.

As presented at a monthly CWL meeting, we were encouraged to join others in the anonymous spiritual adoption of an unborn child. Although we do not and will not know the baby, we give the baby a name and fill in the date we adopt it on a card provided.

We pray for this baby for a safe and viable delivery.

A fundraiser raffle sponsored by CWL raised money for missionary studies for Tianna Balfour, our former youth minister at Notre Dame Parish. At the present time

Oct. 20 - 27 was the CWL sponsored the “Ribbon of Signatures Campaign”. This year postcard petitions stating “pornography hurts,” depicting a child with a tear running down their cheek was passed out to parishioners at masses, A message against pornography on 4.2 billion pornographic websites was on the back. We were to wear the ribbon attached to the card, sign the card and mail it to Minister of Justice Peter Mackay. Over 200 cards were mailed.

The annual Notre Dame fall supper was headed once again by the CWL on Oct. 27. Many parishioners contributed to and worked hard to make this undertaking a success. More than 650 meals were served. There was a CWL fall workshop in Marcelin Nov 9.

The Notre Dame CWL membership and fun night will be held Nov 25 with a Christmas theme.

More protection for vulnerable Staff After conducting consultations, the government is making a number of amendments to legislation affecting vulnerable adults.

These changes will improve and clarify a number of processes and legislative requirements for vulnerable adults and their representatives and caregivers, according to a press release.

The amendments will be made through The Health Care Directives and Substitute Health Care Decision Makers Amendment Act, 2013, The Powers of Attorney Amendment Act, 2013, and The Public Guardian and Trustee Amendment Act, 2013.

RCMP Daily Report

Drive through road rage to hospital‐gowned perpetrators Staff Recently the RCMP began issuing a daily Report. What follows is a sampling of those reports.

All reports can be found at www.newsoptimist.ca under the Follow the Sirens tab.

They are posted there each morning, except on weekends.

Between 6 a.m. Thursday and 6 a.m. Friday Battlefords RCMP responded to more than 20 calls for service.

Between 6 a.m. Wednesday and 6 a.m. Thursday Battlefords RCMP responded to approximately 30 calls for service. Among those were three false alarms and several 911 misdials and minor complaints.

Wednesday

8:57 a.m. — 14-year-old youth arrested after a report of an assault against staff at a youth facility. Youth has since been released and is scheduled to appear in North Battleford Youth court Dec. 19 charged with two counts of assault and one count of uttering threats.

12:15 p.m. — A vehicle parked in a lot on the 1700 block of 110th street during the morning had a tire slashed. Matter still under investigation.

12:44 p.m. — Three-vehicle collision on Henderson Drive. A truck backing out a driveway struck a south bound van. The van then slid into a parked truck on the opposite side of the street.

Van had significant damage to front end and towed from scene. Other vehicles still driveable. No injuries reported.

3:28 p.m. — 12-year-old youth arrested and facing one count of assault and one count of uttering threats after another youth at a youth facility was assaulted.

4:32 p.m. — 911 call to a residence on 900 block of 109th Street of an assault in progress. A 28-year-old woman was arrested on scene for assault. Alleged victim and suspect are known to each other. Matter remains under investigation.

5:24 p.m. — Three-vehicle collision on bridges between North Battleford and Battleford. One vehicle had to be towed from scene. No injuries reported. Cause remains under investigation.

7:58 p.m. — Report of assault at residence on 1000 block of 108th Street. Upon arrival members found two men fighting who were quickly separated. There was limited co-operation with persons on scene about the fight. Both involved found to be on conditions not to consume alcohol.

A 25-year-old man from North Battleford is facing a charge of failing to comply with an undertaking and will appear in North Battleford Provincial Court Dec. 30. A 15-year-old youth is facing one count of failing to comply with probation and will

appear in North Battleford Youth Court Dec. 19.

Thursday 12:11 a.m. — 17-year-old youth arrested for failing to comply with probation after an earlier curfew check was completed and youth was not at prescribed residence.

First appearance in provincial court will be Thursday at 9:30 a.m.

Battlefords RCMP responded to more than 30 incidents between 6 a.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Tuesday 12:37 p.m. — Two-vehicle collision at intersection of Territorial Drive and Douglas Avenue. No injuries reported and traffic was restricted for a brief period of time as the scene was cleared. Road conditions at the time were very icy.

1:40 p.m. — 47-year-old woman arrested after complaint of intoxicated persons causing a disturbance on 101st Street. Suspect found to have outstanding warrants and facing a new charge of obstruction. To appear in North Battleford Provincial Court at 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 6.

1:50 p.m. — Break and enter reported to a vacant residence on 1100 block of 108th Street. Nothing damaged or missing. Suspect described as wearing a hospital gown.

10:02 p.m. — Noise Bylaw warning associated to loud individuals at residence on Winder Crescent.

11:26 p.m. — Call to 900

block of 103rd Street of an injured male who had been assaulted. Visible facial and head injuries noted. Male was taken to hospital for medical treatment, but refused to co-operate with any police investigation.

Wednesday 12:27 a.m. — Disturbance call to a residence on Winder Crescent. Intoxicated man causing issues at residence.

A 62-year-old man was taken to another safe location and released to prevent further issues.

12:27 a.m. — Unknown male at a business on 1700 block of 100th Street, asking staff for drugs to buy and then doing a very bad job of trying to covertly steal things.

Subject ran from scene when police were called and did not leave with any stolen property. Patrols for subject negative.

12:40 a.m. — Checks on 26-year-old man for probation conditions at a residence on 1200 block of 112th Street.

Man not located and charges are pending.

1:45 a.m. — Unwanted guests at a home on 500 block of 103rd Street. Both left voluntarily after police contacted.

3:49 a.m. — The same 26-year-old man from earlier probation check, now at a residence on 1000 block of 104th Street. Members advised of a fight at that location, two men known to each other appear to have gotten into a physical altercation then both left in separate

vehicles. The second male was reported to be suffering from possible stab wounds.

He was located a short time later at the hospital being treated with what appear to have been self inflicted injuries. The 26-year-old man remains at large.

In the 24 hours between 6 a.m. Thursday and 6 a.m.

Friday, Battlefords RCMP investigated 40 occurrences.

Thursday • 12:24 p.m. — Complaint of male sleeping behind a business on Railway Avenue East. 45-year-old male arrested for being drunk in public. Held in custody and later released on Liquor Act charges.

• 1:08 p.m. — Second 45year-old male arrested for being drunk in public near a second business on Railway Avenue East. Held in custody until sober.

• 2:15 p.m. — 20-year-old male arrested from being drunk in public on the 1200 block of 101st Street. Found also to have outstanding warrants for breach of probation.

Held for court at 9:30 a.m.

Nov. 1.

• 4:36 p.m. — Complaint of impaired driver. 53-yearold male from Cochin located north of city on Highway 4 and now facing impaired driving charges.

• 5:31 p.m. — Complaint of eggs thrown at property.

Child under 12 identified as suspect.

• 6:55 p.m. — Request to locate missing 55-year-old male. Located a short time

later, safe.

• 7:15 p.m. — Report of an assault on 1100 block of 100th Street. Upon arrival alleged suspect and victim had left. No further reports made.

• 8:04 p.m. — Home owner returned to residence on Winder Crescent and found it insecure. Residence cleared and nothing found missing.

• 8:10 p.m. — 53-year-old male charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian after a 13-year-old girl was injured in a collision with a vehicle on 100th Street. Injuries not believed to be life threatening.

• 9:00 p.m. — Complaint of intoxicated males causing a disturbance on the 1100 block of 101st Street.

A 77-year-old male and a 30-year-old male both taken into custody for public intoxication.

• 9:38 p.m. — 25-year-old male arrested on outstanding warrants located on 110th Street and 8th Avenue.

• 10:51 p.m. — Complaint of a male and female yelling on the 1000 block of 107th street. Intoxicated male located, having argument after being kicked out of party.

Subject sent home via a cab.

• 10:51 p.m. — Call to a residence on the 900 block of 110th Street of a youth being disrespectful and not going to bed. Important enough to call twice. Mediated by members.

• 11:49 p.m. — Two intoxicated person causing problems at a residence on

1100 block of 106th Street.

Subjects gone upon police arrival.

Friday

• 12:33 a.m. — Report of an assault on Railway Avenue East. Investigation revealed matter an argument. Complaintant assisted in retrieving effects and both parties separated for the night.

• 1:20 a.m. — Call of intoxicated person causing problems at a home on 1100 block of 106th Street. Subject left scene when police called and was not located. Subject came about around 5 a.m. to cause more problems at the home and a second call was made. Subject left scene again.

• 1:22 a.m. — Several complaints of mischief and loud noise on 1900 block of St Laurent Drive. 22-yearold suspect later arrested in rural area on other outstanding matters. Charges are still pending.

• 1:34 p.m. — Complaint of intoxicated male at a residence on 1400 block of 98th Street causing problems.

One male complaining of subject being drunk causing problems. The other male said it was the complainant.

Complainant’s mother then woke up and told both to be quiet and go to bed.

• 1:55 a.m. — 17-year-old male arrested for being drunk in public on 1000 block of 108th Street. Also found to have outstanding warrants and facing new charges of possession of a controlled substance.

OBITUARIES ARMSTRONG: Robert Harold Armstrong, 1946 - 2013. Bob passed away on October 24, 2013. He is survived by: his wife Sandra, daughters – Shelly, Vicki (Darrin), Barb (Russ), Anne and Rebecca, his grandchildren – Chris, Brad, Jaymie, Jeremy, Jeffrey, Jackson, Colton, James, Dylan, Evan, Kaitlyn & great grandson, Ryder. Bob was a retired Engineer, and spent many hours tending to his rose garden and enjoying his hobby of restoring old cars, especially Cadillac’s. He had a great time talking railroad, vintage cars, playing with his grandchildren and yearly trips to the summer cottage at Days Beach, Saskatchewan. Bobby will be sorely missed and remembered with all of the love and warmth he shared with those who knew and loved him.

LARSSON ~ Torbjorn Larsson passed away in Maidstone, Saskatchewan on Monday, October 28, 2013 at the age of 65 years.

Eulogy – Florence Clemence Toews Grandma was born at home on September 22, 1934 to Dorothy and Louis Lavallee. She grew up with 4 brothers – George, Bill, Donald and Cubby. Her folks raised several other children as well, including one little girl, her sister Loretta, who shared the same birthdate. When Grandma was growing up, her family lived in different places. She rode horseback to school with her brothers. She also went to school in Prince Albert and still talked about how strict the nuns were, but how beautifully they could sing. As a teenager, Grandma quit school to look after her brothers and father and the household while her Mom recovered from surgery. Out of all the places Grandma lived before getting married, the home in what she called “the Damour Country” was her favorite. This area is now part of the Royal Pasture. Several years ago, Uncle Martin and Aunty Laura took the quad through there and located the yard site.

Grandma was thrilled to see photos of her old home. In 1963, Grandma married Grandpa and they farmed together, raised 6 children and our family expanded to 14 including 5 grandchildren.

When their kids were small, they had several late evening car rides in pajamas as Grandma would take them to the field to check up on Grandpa. Some mornings they would wake up to the smell of freshly baked “morning buns” and take a wagon of buns and coffee out to Grandpa and help with the milking. Grandma enjoyed gardening and loved flowers especially roses – if she had her way – there’d be no lawn – only a rose garden. There were lots of family celebrations, not just immediate family but full extended family on both sides, plus get togethers with friends and neighbors. Grandma loved to be in the middle of it all – planning, cooking and organizing. She had a gift for pulling off a big meal. Grandma was a talented seamstress. She made a lot of her own clothes and lots for us. She made a number of wedding gowns and grad dresses, costumes, and did alterations for lots of friends and family. Out of all her deteriorating health conditions, she wanted her sight back so she could sew again. Grandma showed us how to live by faith, not by sight. Farm life comes with lots of challenges – it’s not always easy – but through the tough times, Grandma made sure we all knew that everything would be alright, and when things were going well, she’d remind us that we were blessed. Her strong faith helped her fearlessly face all life’s challenges. Grandma and Grandpa looked forward to their 50th Anniversary and cherished every moment of that celebration. We are thankful that we all could share that day with them. Whenever Grandma and Grandpa were not together (which wasn’t very often) each was counting on seeing the other. They would be watching for their life partner to return home.

We know that Grandpa has been watching through heaven’s window … now after weeks of heartache - they are together again. We love you Grandma.

FLOYD T. McNABB, 1922 2013. Floyd McNabb was born August 16, 1922 in Lethbridge, AB and passed away in Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon in the early evening of Tuesday, October 29th, 2013 at the age of 91, following a heart condition that began in March, 2012.

Floyd was survived by his wife of eighteen years, Ariana Sheran of Saskatoon and Kauai, his niece, Sharon Pangman (Mike) from Edmonton, his goddaughter, Lynn Osborn (Chris) from Coquitlam, a distant cousin from Calgary, Bettelou Stagg (George) and their daughter, Marion Leniczek (Chuck) and their family from Lemberg, SK, his brother-in-law Gary Nyholt (RoseMarie) of Metinota, SK and their daughters, Stacy Nyholt (Tom) of Edmonton and Tamara Nyholt (Toni) who live in New Zealand. Floyd was predeceased by his first wife, Elizabeth Carson “Libby”, his sister Dorothy, brother-in-law Len, nephew Peter, father Frank Bruce McNabb, mother Carrie (Hougan) McNabb, father-in-law Gerrit Nyholt and mother-in-law Doris Audrey Nyholt. After graduation, Floyd served five years in the Canadian Air Force during World War II before beginning his life-long career in the travel business in 1946. He was transferred to Saskatoon a year later and worked for Trans Canada Airlines (now Air Canada) over a dozen years. About the same time he met his sweetheart, Libby from Moncton, an exchange teacher. They were married within a year. In 1962 Ariana met Floyd and became his secretary/travel agent at Maher Travel Agency in Saskatoon for several years. He retired from P. Lawson Travel in 1986 and spent their winter holidays in Hawaii. Following Libby’s passing in spring of 1994, Floyd reconnected with Ariana and they married in 1995. Floyd totally enjoyed a graceful and joyful retirement, flying between Saskatoon and his favorite winter retirement beach in Kauai, where he couldswim almost daily until 2012. Floyd’s main joy in life was traveling the world. That was accomplished through the air force and his lifelong career in travel. His heritage was Scottish and Norwegian. He spent time exploring both Scotland and Norway to embrace his roots. He circled the globe on several occasions, visiting many different countries.

Throughout his life, Floyd loved nature and his favorite exercise was swimming. In Kauai he took long swims in the ocean in front of his residence. In Saskatoon he swam 30 to 40 laps three times each week, leaving home at 6:00 a.m., rain or shine from the time when he was a boy in the YMCA in Lethbridge until the heart incident in 2012. He also exercised by jogging, walking and hiking. In quiet times he was an avid reader of mystery novels. He also enjoyed solving puzzles, often while sitting under a palm tree on the beach. At home in Saskatoon he loved to putter in his garden on almost a daily basis and in Kauai he took up the job of assistant cook. Floyd attended Grosvenor Park United Church in Saskatoon and Kapa’a United Church of Christ in Kauai. He donated his time before and after retirement to over a dozen charitable organizations including Rotary (since 1965), other luncheon business groups, SKAL club, helping in church work parties, participating in the three local hospital foundations in Saskatoon, Folkfest and Habitat for Humanity. His latest volunteer job was in the winter of 2012-13 when he painted the chain link fence green around the church yard in Kauai. It took him all winter and he wasn’t very strong, but he did complete the job and he ceremoniously discarded his paint clothes and shoes at the end of the season. The family would like to extend sincere appreciation to family physician, Dr. Michel Jutras, his beloved doctor for over thirty years. Thank you to the doctors and nurses at Royal University Hospital for their care, attention and support this summer and fall. A sincere and loving “thank you” to the caring and friendly folks at Dolan’s Home Support from August 1 to October 15. Thanks to Brittany and Claire, the executives who made sure all shifts were covered, even if they had to attend to them personally! A special thank you is extended to Lou Itcush, who was Floyd’s well loved and efficient caregiver, to dear one Connie, songbird Viorela and all of the other personal caregivers, as well as Terry McFaull and Wayne Smith, Floyd’s extraordinary therapists who attended to him both in the hospital and at home over several months. A sincere thank you to Jessica Fox and her team from CPAS, who helped us to bring Floyd home under difficult and challenging circumstances, as well as the nurses, dietitians, physiotherapists and other helpers from the Saskatoon Health Region. Although Floyd did not have children, he had a widely selected worldwide chosen family including participants of Cloverleaf Connection who also came to his assistance, both in Saskatoon and Kauai, in many personal, loving and caring ways ever since Floyd’s body began to tire. A Life Celebration for beloved Floyd will take place on Wednesday, November 6th, 2013 at 11 am at Grosvenor Park United Church (14th and Cumberland) with Rev. Tony Thompson as guest minister and Rev. David Kim-Cragg. Tony officiated at Floyd and Ariana’s marriage on 11/11/95. A luncheon will follow at the church including an open mike for comments or anecdotes from friends and family members. Floyd’s family is suggesting that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Floyd’s honor to the Rotary Club of Saskatoon at 38 St. Lawrence Ct. The Breast Friends were honoured to be invited last week to a banquet with keynote speaker Arlene Dickinson of Dragons’ Den fame.

This banquet was sponsored by the Humboldt Scotia Bank. Arlene is a great speaker and a positive role model for women in business.

We were thrilled she remembered us and that she was interested in how the books have been doing since we were on Dragons’ Den. On top of all of that the chicken at the banquet was delicious. Judy and her team from the Bella Vista Inn graciously shared the recipe with us and said we could share it with readers. I (Patti Hack) made it for company, and it was a big hit. I rolled the chicken breasts in flour, egg wash and then bread crumbs. I baked them at 350F until cooked through (rather than browning them ahead). This was a suggestion of Judy’s; they do them both ways when they cater. I can attest that either way is yummy!

Are you included or have you been left out?

Terms such as cultural pluralism, and inclusivism (when applied to the same area), refer to the shared and equal rights of individuals in society. The struggle for equality in various areas has gone on for some time.

In the Declaration of Independence of the United States, Thomas Jefferson wrote, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable [inborn] rights.” He was speaking against the theory of the divine right of kings, the belief that they had Godgiven authority over their subjects. But what did he mean by “all men”?

What would Jefferson have said to women’s suffrage (the right of women to vote and hold public office)?

In Canada, male dominated municipal, provincial, and federal governments rejected the idea for decades. Women’s place was in the home, so it was said. Let their husbands represent their views in public.

Full suffrage was achieved piecemeal, province by province, from the late 19th century on. It was not finally universal across all of Canada until 1940.

Until that time, all-white teams refused to hire any African American players. The “World” Series of baseball was a myth, as some of the best players were being excluded because of ethnicity or skin colour. It took the courage of Jackie Robinson to finally change things. Facing daily abuse, and even death threats, for daring to cross the line, he’s a true 20th century hero.

But how about the Christian gospel? Is it inclusive or exclusive? And the answer is a paradox: it’s both. It’s exclusive in the sense that forgiveness of sins, eternal life and a home in heaven are ours only through faith in Christ. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.

No one comes to the Father

except through Me” (Jn. 14:6) “nor is there salvation in any other.” (Acts 4:12) That’s pretty restrictive!

But there is a solution, a means of being delivered from sin that shuts us out.

By His grace, God the Father sent His Son to pay the price of our sin upon the cross.

Through faith in Him, we can be saved (Jn. 3:16; Acts 16:30-31). “This is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.” (I Jn. 5:11-12) Where, then, is the inclusiveness of the gospel? The inclusiveness is found in the offer of the gospel. It’s for all, men and women, old and young, rich and poor, no matter how sinful the person has been. A word that is used frequently to indicate this open invitation is whoever

Published in 1909, it says, “I am so happy in Christ today, / That I go singing along my way; / Yes, I’m so happy to know and say, / ‘Jesus included me, too.’ / Jesus included me, yes, He included me, / When the Lord said, ‘Whosoever,’ He included me.”

We’re under attack!

Help! Here in Powell River where little gets in except by plane or boat, we’ve been invaded and that by a species once considered highly improbable to ever reach our shores. But it’s true. The SWDs have arrived with a vengeance and folks are up in arms about it.

Actually, up in nets, bait, traps, sprays and good gardening practices to be exact.

As hard as it is to fathom or accept, a miniscule enemy by the exotic name of Spotted Wing Drosophila has taken up residence in the berry and cherry crops of the Upper Sunshine Coast. I make no claim to being an expert on insect anatomy, but projected pictures of the tiny creatures show a somewhat attractive

fly with the ability to destroy our backyard cherry crop and our always abundant raspberry harvest as well as those wild and succulent blackberries.

Earlier this week I, along with a number of other residents, attended an information meeting to learn how to detect, prevent and hopefully, rid our local gardens of these latest, but most unwelcome invaders.

One of the things that grabbed my attention during the presentations we heard was the

difference in how these critters did their dastardly deeds. Lest I say things wrong, I’ll leave you to research the topic for more information.

Here’s what I took away from it all, though: SWDs are small; they have an almost lovely coloured pattern on their wings; it takes keen eyesight or a magnifying glass to identify them; and they cause a huge amount of damage.

Most sinister is their habit of infesting the fruit even before it is ripe.

“Catch for us the foxes [as in SWDs], the little [insects] foxes that ruin the vineyards, our vineyards that are in bloom.” (S of S 28:51) “Lord, cleanse the ‘little sins’ in me.”

Spend some quality family time together. Worship at the church of your choice.

as well as to breach of probation, breach of recognizance by contact and breach of recognizance by removal of a monitoring bracelet. The remaining charges are to be withdrawn.

The pleas were entered in provincial court in North Battleford Friday. Passley appeared by closed-circuit video from Saskatoon Correctional Centre.

Passley had earlier been the subject of an interprovincial manhunt. After being

released from custody Sept.

4, Passley fled the province before an Oct. 2 court date. Arrest warrants were issued and Passley was arrested in Calgary on the North Battleford charges in mid-October.

His next scheduled court appearance is Dec. 17 for sentencing. A pre-sentence report has been ordered and there is a chance the sentencing date could be pushed back if that report is not ready by that time.

A gardener’s reflections of rural Ukraine

By Sara Williams Thousands of settlers arrived from western Ukraine to homestead on the prairies.

Visiting that area for two weeks earlier this fall, I reflected on how similar the landscapes were. Was the view from our coach window an area south of Swift Current or in Ukraine?

Even after centuries of being tilled, the soil is still black and deep. Although deeply affected by the legacy of collectivization during the Soviet era, Ukraine remains the breadbasket of Europe. There are fields of wheat, sunflowers, maize, buckwheat, oats, pumpkins and sugar beets.

Some of these are large and mechanized with John Deere implements. Others are small and for the most part handcultivated, some with the help of a horse.

We drove through small towns and villages with the houses fronting the road, each neatly fenced and often with a fancy gate. Most had a small orchard in front with a few apple and pear trees laden with fruit. We tasted our fair share. There were several varieties but they were all delicious! And the walnut trees! Newly fallen to

the earth and cracked open, the fresh walnuts were delicious. Everyone should eat a fresh walnut before they die!

The cherries had long been picked and dried or canned.

Lush grape arbours were evident everywhere. Green and purple, large and sweet, they are a far cry of what we get in our grocery stores. They are eaten fresh or made into jelly and wine. One wonders how the Ukrainians must have hated collectivization with such a sense of pride and pleasure evident in yard, garden and harvest.

Each home boasted several acres of vegetable garden, many times with a small barn and pasture behind.

Families often had a pig or one or two cows as well as chickens and geese. There were large pumpkin patches with hundreds of pumpkins still lying in the sun. So many pumpkins! And all as feed for the animals.

This was a bountiful year

for apples. Along with potatoes and onions, they were evident on roadside stands along the highways and in markets. We passed more than a mile of large trucks full of apples lined up along the roadside, waiting their turn to be unloaded at a juicing facility. Not unlike grain trucks once seen at prairie elevators.

Wild forest mushrooms were also for sale at stands along the roadsides — a bountiful year according to everyone. We stopped. The temperature had fallen to -2 C over the past several days.

The old ladies were in their babushkas, rubber boots and multiple layers of sweaters and coats. The mushrooms were available either canned in brine or dried. Some of our group wondered, did they really know the difference between the good ones and the poisonous ones? Were their canning procedures up to “our” public health standards? I took it for granted that, yes, they were, and that at some point Darwin’s law would have kicked in. The babas indeed know what they were doing! And we had an opportunity to taste these wild mushrooms: they were incomparably delicious.

Although many of the less remote rural towns and villages now have piped water, individual wells with their decorative well covers were very much in view. And their exterior “summer kitchens”, like those of our grandparents, is where the fruit and vegetables are canned, pickled, jellied, jammed and fermented into wine and liqueurs to be stored in a cold room or cellar for the winter.

Visiting in a village home, I was questioned in detail (through a translator) about what I grew in my own garden. I listed off the vegetables, row by row. And how did I keep them for the winter? I was okay until I came to the freezers – still a rarity in many of the more remote villages. My hat goes off to these Ukrainian women, their gardens and their skills.
