The closer we get to Christmas, the busier it gets. Here is a sampling of some of the events coming up.

There is tally of happenings at the Library in North Battleford over the next week or two. On Tuesdays, Nov. 19 and 26, Time for Tots starts at 10:30 a.m.

Wednesdays, Nov. 20 and 27, Preschool Storytime starts at 10:30 a.m.

Preschool Storytime also runs at 2 p.m. on Thursdays, Nov. 21 and 28.

Wednesday, Nov. 20 from 4 to 5 p.m., the Kids’ Lego Club will meet. It’s a club for ages six to 12 where participants can create, build and use their imaginations.

Lego is provided.

That evening, Wednesday, Nov. 20, there will be an adult movie night starting at 7 p.m.

Saturday, Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. is the Kids Geronimo Stilton Program. Geronimo Stilton is an internationally famous rodent author and detective featured in a best-selling book series.

Monday, Nov. 25, the Teen Book Club will meet at 4 p.m. and the Adult Book Club will meet at 7 p.m.

Wednesday, Nov. 27 a travel program featuring China will be presented

Nov. 30 is also the day for Hafford’s Communities in Bloom Christmas Craft fair and Trade Show in the Ukrainian National Hall from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Art of Quilting A show by the Rivers’ Edge Quilters is on at the Chapel Gallery in North Battleford featuring 40 quilted items from 23 artists/quilters. Friday evening a reception was held to open the show and visiting quilter from Moose Jaw, Arlyce Thompson (left), presented a trunk show of her quilts. She was impressed with the beauty of the show and how it has been displayed by galleries director Leah Garven. It is being shown as the art it truly is, said Thompson, who was also scheduled to teach classes over the weekend. The Rivers’ Edge Quilters show will run until Dec. 15.

Galleries director Leah Garven and Rivers’ Edge Quilters member Pat Downie show off the vintage crib and baby doll the latter has donated for use in the Rivers’ Edge Quilters show and any future shows for which they may be useful. The crib has been in the basement for years, says Downie, and it will be nice to know it will be put to good use in the enjoyment of others.

$100,000 win goes to Battleford couple

There were smiles all around Friday when a $100,000 cheque was presented to this year’s Battlefords Union Hospital Foundation Lottery winner, Sandra Fafard of Battleford.

Fafard, who works in the laboratory at Battlefords Union Hospital, was ecstatic at her win. She and her grandmother purchased BUHF lottery tickets together for many years, and when her grandmother passed away, Fafard continued.

She is not one to buy other lottery tickets, so she is particularly pleased that her contributions are going toward her favourite cause.

Fafard plans to give $10,000 to each of their two children, pay off her car and her husband’s truck and the debt

she incurred to become a lab technician three years ago.

“It fixes everything!” she said. “Life is great!”

Although he wasn’t available for Friday’s celebration, Nick Nikiforuk of Lloydminster was the winner of the 50/50 add-on worth $48,738.

B U H F o u n d a t i o n ’s $100,000 Cash Lottery is the foundation’s biggest fundraiser. Garnering support from all over the province, 14,000 tickets were available and more than $175,000 in cash prizes has been awarded. Proceeds from the 2013 $100,000 Lottery will support the purchase of a new $550,000 digital fluoroscopy unit for BUH’s medical imaging department.

Commentary

The role of the news media, 50 years later I have an important declaration to make in my column this week.

I am declaring the month of November to be “Newsroom Appreciation Month,” in honour of the hard work of those individuals who work in the news media around the world and here at home.

I am not even waiting for Mayor Ian Hamilton to make a proclamation on it, or any other mayor, like Rob Ford for instance. I’m just going to go ahead and declare it.

Now, at one time my predecessor, Brian Zinchuk, threw a Newsroom Appreciation Day as a tongue-in-cheek take on the “appreciation days” that go on elsewhere. That may have been a bit of an April Fool’s joke, but I’m not joking in the least. I’m dead serious.

For one thing, I’m tired of this attitude from some people that journalists are somehow nothing more than bugs who ought to be squashed.

It’s not warranted, especially when you consider the hassles, roadblocks and, yes, intimidation journalists face every day. Some reporters are shot at or even killed doing their jobs. When well known former newsman Richard Brown spoke in North Battleford last month, he recounted that he and his TV crew in Beirut could have been killed if they had opted to simply walk down the street for dinner and drinks one evening. Folks, you have no idea what some reporters go through.

That bitter rant aside, my main motivation is a more positive reason — at least, positive in relation to what was a terrible moment in American history.

I am talking of course, of the date of Nov. 22, 1963, the date of the assassination of John F. Kennedy in Dallas, Texas. This Friday marks 50 years to the day of that tragedy.

It was a day that changed the course of American history, but it was also one that changed the course of the news business because of the role played by the medium of television in the news coverage of that tragedy.

Before that day, it was radio that was the media for breaking domestic and world news. That was the media in which people learned about the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the events of the Second World War and the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1945.

When initial reports about the shooting in Dallas filtered out that fateful day in 1963, the great American television networks interrupted their regularly-scheduled programming to report what was happening, live.

The CBS network initially interrupted their showing of the soap opera As the World Turns to provide reports from the newsroom from Walter Cronkite on the unfolding story.

Those reports consisted of a voiceover from Cronkite set to a black screen with the words “bulletin” scrawled on it.

Finally, the cameras went live to Cronkite in the newsroom. NBC and ABC switched to live coverage of their own. For the next four days they would broadcast nonstop, bringing information on the unfolding tragedy to viewers at home, live.

Television cameras covered the arrival of Kennedy’s body in Washington and the first words of the new president, Lyndon Johnson, to the nation.

Cameras showed the parade of mourners in Washington as the deceased president’s casket lay in the rotunda of the capitol.

Viewers watched in horror as news broke that alleged gunman Lee Harvey Oswald was gunned down himself, by Jack Ruby in Dallas.

On the fourth and final day of coverage, viewers tuned in to the funeral in Washington, D.C. Television news had been around well before the events

newsoptimist.john@sasktel.net of November 1963, but the tragedy marked the first time the relatively new media was able to transfix viewers with live continuing coverage as news unfolded.

Since 1963, it has been common for television networks, and later all-news channels, to break in to their regular lineup to bring live continuing coverage of breaking news.

Some would say this sort of thing is sometimes overdone.

The cable channels can be notorious for providing live continuing coverage of news items that are relatively trivial compared to the Kennedy assassination, like the recent government shutdown, for example.

But there is no doubt about the role that TV news has played in bringing major news stories home to people. The advent of live video streaming has added a new dimension to that coverage, with news organizations now able to bring

that live coverage directly to your mobile devices, iPads, and others.

The common question of those who were around back on Nov. 22, 1963 “where were you?” Where were you when you first heard the news about the Kennedy assassination?

For younger generations, the “where were you” question comes up in connection to other moments in history such as the day Princess Diana was killed in Paris. Or the day the famous singer Michael Jackson died. And of course, there’s 9/11.

It’s those days when journalists really are put to the test, scrambling to get the story and get it right, under difficult circumstances. Those same journalists have another duty at the same time, of calming down those shocked people watching at home.

So on this anniversary of a sad but historic event in the annals of history, we should note the important role the media plays in delivering important breaking news.

I appreciate the role not only of those who covered the Kennedy assassination tragedy 50 years ago, but also the work of all those hard-working journalists in the news media before and afterwards whose integrity and work ethic brings you the stories of the day.

Next time you go to the local watering hole, have the bartenders turn the TVs to the news channels, and raise a glass to these hard-working journalists. Believe me, they don’t get enough appreciation.

City Council Notes

New director of business development introduced Staff Here’s a look at some of the highlights from the Nov. 12 meeting of city council.

The meeting itself had a relatively short agenda compared to previous meetings and lasted just over a half hour.

The meeting was the first one for the new city Director of Business Development Jennifer Niesink, who was introduced by City Manager Jim Toye. Niesink began her new duties Nov. 1.

A major item of discussion at the meeting was tax collection. The tax collection report noted there was $5.7 million in unpaid taxes in 2013, way up from last year at this same time when the number was $2.1 million. It was noted, however, the tax deadline had been extended this year to Dec. 31. Last year the deadline was June 1.

City council also voted to amend the bylaw that would remove the allowance for discounts for those who pay taxes in January. That amendment passed, but not unanimously: both councillors Ryan Bater and Cathy Richardson voted against.

Other items from the meeting: • All donors to the Credit Union CUplex project are now recognized on donor walls at the facilities. Toye reminded those who donated $10,000 or more that they qualify for additional recognition on individual signage on or near the item or area they sponsored. The donors must also approve and pay for the additional signs that are being manufactured by Signs of the Times in North Battleford. Those signs will be installed once approved and paid for by the donors.

Reminder letters had been sent to the donors in May and the City is sending out

another letter this week. • Councillor Cathy Richardson acknowledged the Community Meeting on Crime Nov. 8 at Knights of Columbus Hall. While turnout was low, reportedly

about 40 people, Richardson said she felt there was good dialogue. • The Canadian Cancer Society sent appreciation to the City for providing use of Centennial Park track and

the Civic Centre for Relay for Life at a value of $3,000.

More than $92,000.00 was raised at the 2013 Battlefords event. • On behalf of residents of a condo development on

Henderson Drive, condo president Ron Kelly thanked the City for street paving in the area, which happened sooner than expected. • Mayor Hamilton has designated Nov. 17-24 as Restorative Justice Week.

Boost for BTEC

The next scheduled meeting of council is Nov. 25 at 8 p.m.

The incomparable Brett Wilson

I debated with myself with respect to what adjective I should use in the title to describe Brett Wilson. I settled on the word “incomparable” which means “so outstanding as to be beyond comparison.”

W. Brett Wilson was born on July 1, 1957 at North Battleford. His mother was a social worker; his father was a car salesman. He received his elementary and high school education in the city’s public schools.

Brett was accelerated for a year, but the experience was a disaster. As one of the smallest kids, he couldn’t compete with his larger classmates.

He felt like giving up.

Things turned around for Brett at university – new relationships, new friendships. He also found he was only an average student. But this motivated him to work harder.

Brett’s informal education was likely more important than his regular class work. He read every copy of the Financial Post from cover to cover which gave him an invaluable education on the real world of business. Brett also took a four-week survival course in British Columbia called “Outward Bound.” It changed his life. He was able to get rid of his insecurity to the point where he could say, “I’m OK, not better than others, but I’m OK.” Finally, Brett’s membership in the Investment Club laid the groundwork for his phenomenal success in business. It was all about the stock market, how it worked – how to buy and sell, paying commissions, following research and market trends.

It should be noted Brett was not all business and no play. University students have a reputation for pulling off outrageous stunts and Brett was no exception.

On one occasion, he persuaded a local dancer to re-enact Lady Godiva’s famous ride across the campus bowl. The feminists were not amused.

Brett’s meteoric rise to the top of the financial industry was truly extraordinary. After he graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering in 1979, he worked in the oil fields of Western Canada for three years. He then took an MBA degree from the University of Calgary in 1985 and began work as an investment banker with McLeod Young Weir Limited. In 1991 he co-founded an investment banking advisory firm, Wilson Mackie and Co., and in 1993, he co-founded with three other investors FirstEnergy Capital Corp., a Canadian stock brokerage whose global clients invest in the energy sector.

In 2008, Brett retired as chairman of FirstEnergy. He continues to invest in energy, agriculture, real estate, sports and entertainment through his company, Prairie Merchant Corporation. His sports acquisitions include the Derby County FC and the Nashville Predators of the NHL. As chair of Canoe Financial, he also invests in Canadian resources.

Brett’s interests extended beyond investments in energy, real estate and sports franchises. He was also involved in the entertainment industry as a member of the cast of CBC’s highly rated reality show, Dragons Den. Brett stood out from his fellow panel members for two reasons. First, he had a kinder disposition that earned him the title of “Dragon with a Heart.” And second, he was the show’s lead deal-maker of all time.

Brett’s best business advice? It’s essential to study marketing, entrepreneurship and philanthropy. You cannot overstate their importance. Don’t be a perfectionist but strive to be “perfect enough” to achieve success. Team meetings are essential. Cover everything relevant to the business. Become aware and en-

gaged. Be organized. Pay attention to detail. It’s necessary to keep the paperwork current in order to steer the ship. Finally, define success for yourself and set your priorities to receive it.

Brett Wilson has amassed a great fortune, but not for himself only. He uses his great wealth to help others, many of whom are underprivileged. As a philanthropist, Brett sees strategic philanthropy as a means to create major social and economic benefits. In this regard, he established the Wilson Centre for Entrepreneurial Excellence at the University of Saskatchewan – in part, to prepare entrepreneurs to be philanthropists. The list of Brett’s philanthropic ventures is diverse and lengthy. He supports Kids’ Cancer Cure, Alzheimer’s research, Youth with a Mission (building homes for the poor in Mexico), David Foster Foundation, Right to Play, Little Warriors, Boomers’ Legacy, 777 Run for Sight and Dare to Care and the Veterans’ Food Bank. He also contributes toward research on the causes of cancer and its prevention. And, he has funded the Wilson Centre for Domestic Abuse Studies. Brett also supports the Canadian Olympic Swim Team and the Rally Pointe Volleyball Centre in Calgary.

Despite Brett’s major philanthropic projects in larger centres, he did not forget his hometown of North Battleford. As a backdrop to his philanthropic investment in our city, it is noted the Battlefords Union Hospital Foundation is the fundraising agency for the hospital. The foundation operates independently from BUH and other health care organizations. It raises funds for the purchase of equipment and provides training for staff. In turn, this enhances patient care.

Brett related that he and his sisters were born at BUH. Until he moved to Saskatoon, and then Alberta, it was the family’s hospital. In 1987, Brett’s mother and grandmother both passed away on the same day at the BUH. The wonderful compassion and professionalism shown to Brett and his family left an indelible mark. In memory of their mother and grandmother, Brett made a $160,000 donation towards the purchase of a new x-ray machine.

The following year, Brett asked the foundation’s CEO to provide him with a “grocery list” with corresponding costs and how the money would be spent.

The hospital had four antiquated machines on site, but because of their age, only three could be used at one time. Rather than simply writing a cheque, Brett wanted to give the foundation an incentive to become directly involved.

This meant that it would have to match his donation of $300,000. The most the foundation had ever raised at one time was $100,000. It asked for 12 months to raise the money. Brett gave them three months. The foundation agreed to the challenge. Surpassing all expectations, it raised $500,000 in less than three months. Brett was so impressed he matched the amount raised dollar for dollar.

Now the foundation had $1 million. This was undoubtedly the largest fund raising success in the foundation’s history. It also provided an insight into Brett’s philosophy of strategic philanthropy. The results speak for themselves.

Brett Wilson is almost certainly North Battleford’s most successful entrepreneur. His extraordinary talent for making deals, taking calculated risks, investing and making money has brought him great wealth and recognition. But Brett is known at least as well for his benevolence and wonderful acts of charity. Cardiac North Stars split a couple of shootouts

The Battlefords North Stars continue to earn the nickname “Cardiac North Stars” this season.

The North Stars went to overtime and shootouts twice on the weekend against Melfort and Humboldt, earning three of a possible four points as they continue to climb their way back up the SJHL standings. In fact, the North Stars have gone to shootouts now in four of the past six games, with a fifth game decided in overtime.

Their game against the Mustangs Friday night at the Civic Centre was a rematch against a team that had swept them in the playoffs this past spring. It was Toque and Mitten Toss night at the Civic Centre, with the fans tossing their donations onto the ice upon the scoring of the North Stars’ first goal.

The items were donated to the Battlefords and District

Food and Resource Centre to be distributed to those in need as part of the Share the Warmth Campaign.

It didn’t take long for that toss to happen, as the

North Stars opened the scoring at the 8:19 mark with Luke McColgan’s sixth of the year from Jake McMillen and Jake Erickson assisting.

But David Heath tied it up late in the first and goals by Regan Wilton and Brandon Sloan in the second put the North Stars in a 3-1 hole after two. That was enough for coach Kevin Hasselberg, who pulled starting goaltender Darren Martin, putting in Casey Parker for the rest of the game.

In the third, Blake Young’s sixth of the season from Igor

Leonenko narrowed the gap to 3-2 before Bryden Serafini made it 4-2 Melfort at the 5:55 mark. Two goals late in the period sent the game to a shootout – McColgan’s seventh from Austin Evans and Jake Erickson, and then Robin Yew’s first from Taylor Reich moments later at 18:06 – and that sent the game to overtime.

Overtime solved nothing and the North Stars and Mustangs were forced to decide things in a shootout. Travis Mayan got the first shootout goal for Melfort but Igor Leonenko, on the North Stars’ third shot, tied the shootout at 1-1. On the sixth shot Latrell Charleson scored the winner.

The North Stars beat Melfort 5-4 in a shootout, for their fourth win in five games.

The next night it was on the road for a match with the Kramer Division rivals, the Humboldt Broncos.

The Broncos took the lead on a David Stumborg goal late in period one, making it 1-0 after one. But the North Stars scored twice in the second with Jake McMillen and

Ryne Keller both scoring to make it 2-1.

Midway through the third Thomas Stanislavski scored to tie the game at 2-2, and that would be the way it would remain for the rest of

regulation time and through overtime.

That meant another shootout for the North Stars and this time Cody Pongracz got the only goal to beat Casey Parker, and the Broncos pre-

Get set for greatest Grey Cup ever this Sunday The stage is set for the greatest Grey Cup ever.

You don’t even have to be a fan of the Saskatchewan Roughriders or Hamilton Tiger-Cats to realize the 101st Grey Cup at Regina’s Mosaic Stadium on Sunday is the greatest match-up in league history.

However to get there, the Riders had to get past the Stampeders in Calgary in Sunday’s CFL West Division final. Did they ever!

team.

A blocked field goal and a fumble on the goal line in the first half left 10 points on the field for the Riders, but in the end it didn’t matter.

However the Stampeders never even gave themselves a chance by committing seven turnovers and only taking the ball away once.

I don’t know why, but it was very clear to me the Riders and Ticats were on a collision course for the 2013 Grey Cup as far back as last December when Hamilton hired Kent Austin as coach and GM. They advanced to this championship game by beating the Argonauts 36-24 in Toronto in the East Final.

Much will be written and said during Grey Cup Week about Austin and fellow former Riders Henry Burris, Andy Fantuz, Luca Congi and Eric Tillman coming into Regina to finish the job.

However according to the Riders, that’s only important to the media and fans.

“This is good for the storylines and the media but for

me it’s all about getting that Cup man,” said a relieved Rider quarterback Darian Durant after the West final.

“2009 was heartbreaking and 2010 was hard. We gotta get this one.”

For Rider President Jim Hopson, who oversaw and consented all of the team’s personnel moves over the past 11 months, (some controversial), it’s all paid off.

“Everything we did this year was geared to this,” Hopson revealed. “We put a lot of pressure on ourselves saying if we didn’t make it to the Grey Cup it would be a disappointment.

“But it’s not over. I thought BC was our biggest challenge, honestly. I feel good but we got one more game to play.”

The match-up is mindblowing. The drama is overthe-top. It’s going to be the longest, short week of our lives in anticipation of Sunday’s kickoff.

The game itself is scintillating, but the festival itself will be the greatest-ever long before Sunday. Rider legends like Bobby Jurasin and Jeff Fairholm are coming back for the festivities to join the likes of George Reed, Don Narcisse, Roger Aldag, Dan Rashovich and all the others who make their home here.

Austin too of course, but he’ll be clad in black and gold and intent on spoiling the party.

“I can’t put into words what it will be like with Kent coming back,” Hopson smiled. “It’s going to be a great week.”

Although I had the pre-

monition of a Saskatchewan-Hamilton Grey Cup, it stopped short of predicting the winner. It’s like being woken up near the end of the best dream you ever had!

And now the Riders, who beat Hamilton in both regular season meetings, have to quickly turn the page from the elation of being Western Division champs to the realization there’s still a huge obstacle in the way of their fourth Grey Cup title in franchise history.

However for now, they can relish in the accomplishment. “ We ’ r e i n i t b a b y ! ” screamed Chamblin.

RCMP responded after being advised by WPD Ambulance they were called to the scene in response to a man being assaulted.

The 26-year-old resident of the home was transported to Battlefords Union Hospital for treatment.

Police say at 7 a.m. Thursday the man remained unconscious and was scheduled for transport to a Saskatoon hospital for further treatment.

Because of his condition, RCMP have been unable to speak to the man. Several witnesses have been interviewed, police say, and the investigation is continuing.

Predeceased by his wife Pauline, daughter Irene Jean, two grandsons Martin and Michael and two sisters Jean Cunningham and Evelyn Wolhberg. Bob was born July 23, 1927 at Hafford, Saskatchewan and was around the family farm until he took a job with the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool in 1953 at Speers. Bob worked for the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool in many different capacities for the next 35 years retiring in 1988 after working in Pelly, Melfort, Yorkton, Assiniboia and Regina. Bob always enjoyed family reunions where he would renew stories and lead singing. Right to the end he loved to kibitz with everyone. Bob and Pauline retired to an acreage outside of Yorkton and enjoyed the gardening and country life style. In later years Bob did some travelling and was involved with church and numerous other organizations where he used his agriculture background. He also took keen interest in the farm at Speersand for many years spent time at the seeding and harvest.

Mom loved cooking and baking when family and friends came over for visits. She will be fondly remembered by members of All Saints Ukrainian Catholic Church in North Battleford where she was a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Womens League, singing in the choir, assisting with various church activities and functions. The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to all the friends and family who visited Mom and especially to her friend Olga Yonz who was always ready to assist her when required and to the staff of River Heights Lodge for their care and compassion. DIETRICH: Reta Noella Dietrich went to the Lord, surrounded by family on November 9, 2013 at the age of 87 years. HRABIA: Roy Rudolph Hrabia, of North Battleford, Saskatchewan, passed away at his home on Monday, 4 November 2013 at the age of 86. Roy was born on 4 June 1927 at NW18-46-14 in the Hatherleigh district to parents, Joseph and Rosalie Hrabia. He was the youngest of 5 brothers, 5 sisters and 3 step-brothers. He attended Hatherleigh school from 1934 to 1942 after which he was employed on a thrashing crew hauling sheaves. He always talked about the first load of sheaves that he was hauling and tipped the whole load over. In the spring of 1943 he worked east of Saskatoon for a farmer named Mr. Gibson for $14.00 a month. He farmed a thousand acres which they worked shifts day and night to complete the harvest. Roy also worked in lumber camps during the winter in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Roy joined the Army in 1944 and took his training in Regina and Maple Creek. After being discharged in 1946 he stayed on the farm in the summer and the worked logging camps in the winter. In 1948 Roy rented some land and started farming on his own. Roy’s Mom passed away in 1949 and he took over the home farm. In 1949, love sparked between Roy and Helen Peri during a trip to Sandwith and later that year Roy made that lovely young women his bride. They enjoyed their love for 64 years.

Roy also worked at the Dairy Pool in North Battleford from 1950 – 1952 making Vico (do you know what Vico is Bob?) He then worked for George Green at the Cockshutt dealer for a few years and for the RM of Round Hill for four years spending many bouncing hours on the cats and graders. In 1964 Roy started working at Twin Rivers Equipment in North Battleford. He travelled many miles those years on service calls meeting a lot of people and was known as the combine and baler man. After 18 years employment with Twin Rivers, Roy dedicated all of his time to the farm and family.

He was an avid hunter and it was nothing to have Helen cook breakfast for 10 or more hunters before they headed out for the day. He was proud to teach all the boys his hunting skills and hunted for many years after his retirement to just enjoy the thrill. Roy was very proud of his family heritage and loved to tell many stories to anyone who stopped by for a coffee. And you can bet there would be a Kaiser game in there as well. Roy and Helen sold the farm in 2008 and moved to North Battleford to make their new home in the high rise tower where his kids always teased him that he worked for CN counting cars form the fantastic view they had from the apartment overlooking the river valley. He continued to enjoy this view until his passing. Left to cherish Roy’s memory are his children Ralph (Debbie), Alvin (Shelley), Jo-Ann (Bob Doyle), Jerry (Shirley), Dale (Brenda); 5 grandchildren (Cori, Nicole, Kyle, Allan, Destiny); 3 great-grandchildren (Caleb, Tyrell, Brettley) and several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his wife Helen on 21 September 2013, 5 brothers, 5 sisters and 3 step-brothers. Memorials are requested to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Arrangements entrusted to Battleford Funeral Service.

Norma is survived by her daughter Lynn Neufeld (James) of Peterborough, Ont., sons Robert of Salmon Arm, B.C. and Edmonton, and John (Judi) of Falkland, B.C.; by her niece Noreen Magee (Hugh) of Salmon Arm; by her grandchildren Katharine Neufeld (Todd) in Toronto, Amy Neufeld (Sam) in Kitchener, Ont.; Susan Robertson in Edmonton; Christopher Robertson in Vancouver, Michelle Robertson in Kamloops, and Clayton Robertson in Calgary; and by great-grandchildren, Meret (Katharine); Daisy and Matilda (Amy); Randy (Susan); Nikita and newborn son (Christopher); Drew and Braelyn (Michelle); Katie and Cole (Clayton); fondly remembered by her niece Heather Robertson (Dave) of Edmonton. Norma grew up in North Battleford and Pasadena, California.

Around her parents’ dining room table she honed her keen sense of humour and story-telling skills - talents she used later in her writings. She and Fred married in 1939 and moved to Edmonton in 1944. They worked hard together, building Western Brand Products, the family business in Edmonton. Over the years Norma’s devotion to her family was interspersed with painting classes, travel to far-off locales, duplicate bridge, and her West Highland Whites.

Retirement was a wandering adventure: spring and fall in Victoria and then in Kelowna, summers at the Foley family cottage in Meota, Sask., and winters in Hawaii and California. When old age finally caught up with Norma and Fred, they chose to settle for all seasons in Kelowna. Through good times and bad, her determination, firm opinion, quick wit, and feisty approach to all things and most people stood her in good stead. Although time was not kind to either her mind or body, she lived out her final years surrounded by family, friends, and a cast of caregivers who relished her spirit and talents.

She will be missed. A celebration of her life will take place in Kelowna in the spring followed by inurnment at the Edmonton Cemetery.

SMITH - Marie Therese “Terry”, It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Terry, on November 13, 2013 at Extendicare Michener Hill in Red Deer, AB, at the age of 89 years. Terry was born on August 22, 1924 in Battleford, SK. to Joseph and Yvonne Breton. In 1945, she married Ed Gallop, and together they had a son, Ray. Ed passed away in 1947, leaving Mom with a young baby to raise. In 1951, she married John Jacob “Jack” Smith, and together they raised three daughters. For many years Terry worked in the dietary department at Battlefords’ Union Hospital, and she made many good friends at work that she kept up with after retirement. She was very involved in CUPE and rose to become president of her union local, as well as a member of the Labour Council. She was also involved with her church. Terry liked to travel, and in later years Terry and Jack enjoyed many happy winters in Brownsville, Texas. In 2002, they moved to Red Deer, AB. to be closer to family, and due to deteriorating health, she moved into Extendicare Michener Hill in 2010. Mom liked to have a good time, and could organize a party for any number of people. She was a sports fan, and enjoyed watching curling, football and the Toronto Blue Jays. She had a good heart, always cheering for the underdog. She loved her family and her dogs and the Christmas season. She was a very social lady and liked to sit around with friends and family, playing cards or board games or just visiting. She was a very independent and capable lady. Mom was predeceased by her first husband, Ed Gallop, in 1947, and by her second husband, Jack, in 2004. She was also predeceased by a son, John Jacob, in infancy; her parents Joseph and Yvonne Breton, and two brothers Gerard and Louis Breton.

She is survived by her son, Ray (Marj) Gallop and children Kevin and Brent (Mandie); and three daughters: Linda (John) Zimmer and children Teresa (Adam) Cracknell and Kat (Marc); Rita (Ken) Schermann and children Tammy Simpson (Greg), Jenny Carviel (Ken) and Nancy; Betty (Wayne) McCaffrey and children Sara (Logan) and Stacey; great grandchildren Carter, Logan and Lily Gallop, Ashley Simpson, Samantha Carviel and Zack Nitch. She is also survived by her sister, Laurette Breton, and brother, Paul Breton.

SEVICK: Grace Elizabeth Smith: Grace Elizabeth was born on 29 September, 1910 on a farm near Naseby, Saskatchewan, the fifth and last child of her parents, immigrants from Scotland in 1906.

She took her schooling in Naseby and Battleford and then entered the nursing programme at Saskatoon City Hospital graduating in the spring class of 1932 as a Registered Nurse. Perhaps somewhat unusual for her day, she made a career for herself in her chosen field which she regarded as a calling. She worked at the Saskatoon City Hospital, the Saskatoon Sanatorium, the Saskatchewan Hospital, Notre Dame Hospital and, until her retirement, in the offices of Drs. Good, Wolfe and Gormley. In 1941 she married Knute Sevick who had emigrated from Norway in 1927. They had a wonderful life together, spending time at their lakeside cottage as well as some travelling in later years. Grace left North Battleford in 2004 to live with her daughter in Saskatoon. She has been a resident of Stensrud Lodge since November 2012. Left to honour her in their daily lives are her daughter, Carolyn Thomson, and her son, Douglas Sevick (Diane).

Granny Grace is remembered also by Doug’s children, Allison Yasieniuk (Tenor), with daughters Aliyah and Jordan and Kinley Sevick (Amanda) with son Parker and daughter Keri, as well as by Carolyn’s children, Scott Thomson (Lori), Nikoline Thomson (Evan) and Zak Thomson (Tara) with daughter, Paige Grace. Grace’s family wish to thank all those who made the effort to keep in touch with her after she moved to Saskatoon. She enjoyed cards, letters and visits so much. Spiritual cleansing by a touch from the Lord One of the most dreaded afflictions in ancient times was leprosy. The Bible speaks of it dozens of times. Though the Greek word (lepra) can refer to other skin diseases, it’s likely that what we now know as Hansen’s Disease is often intended.

Physical symptoms include a lost of sensation in the nerves, with ulceration, and a deterioration of the extremities often requiring amputation. When true leprosy is what it was, with none of the modern drugs available, it was usually a death sentence.

As well as requiring isolation for because it was infectious, the Old Testament Law pronounced the sufferer ceremonially unclean, and unable to participate in temple worship. Leprous men would shave their heads, and cry out to any who approached, “Unclean! Unclean!” to warn them away. (Lev. 13:45; Lk. 17:12) It’s interesting that, when the Lord miraculously delivered a sufferer from leprosy, the word “cleansed” is often used, rather than “healed.” For example: “A leper came to Him, imploring Him, kneeling down to Him and saying to Him, ‘If You are willing, You can make me clean.’ Then Jesus,

As soon as He had spoken, immediately the leprosy left him, and he was cleansed.”

(Mk. 1:40-42) There’s something quite remarkable about this incident. First, that the leper would be bold enough to approach the Lord at all.

But more than that, Jesus “touched him.” Not all of the miracles of Jesus were performed that way. Sometimes He simply spoke a word, even from a distance, and there was a demonstration of supernatural power. But with this leper, labeled as being unclean, Christ reached out in compassion and ministered to him with a touch.

Unclean. Little wonder this terrible affliction is sometimes used as an illustration of the spiritual condition of

the sinner. Sin renders us corrupt and unclean in the sight of God. Apart from divine intervention we are unfit to approach Him or to serve Him. And humanly speaking, the sinner’s state is incurable.

“The wages of sin is death.”

(Rom. 6:23) Eternally so.

But, in the words of one hymn writer, “His touch has still its ancient power.”

Cleansing. Just as the Lord Jesus touched and cleansed the lepers of His day, He now invites the sinner to come in faith, and He administers a soul cleansing touch. Because His sacrifice on the cross paid the penalty for sin, all who come to Him can be forgiven and eternally restored. “The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin ... If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (I Jn. 1:7, 9)

Back in 1963, gospel song writer Bill Gaither had a conversation with singer Doug Oldham. At one point, Doug said, “You should write a song with the phrase ‘He Touched Me’ in it.” That led the following year to the creation of one of the Gaither’s most popular numbers, using that phrase as its title.

Born in 1936, Bill Gaither graduated from university

with a masters degree in English. He taught English for a time, before the Lord directed him into a full-time gospel music ministry. He gives credit to his wife Gloria for helping him with the lyrics of their songs. Together, they have written over 700 songs, including Because He Lives, There’s Something About That Name, The Longer I Serve Him and many

more.

The one we’re thinking of here says: “Shackled by a heavy burden, ‘Neath a load of guilt and shame; / Then the hand of Jesus touched me, / And now I am no longer the same. / Since I met this blessed Saviour, / Since He cleansed and made me whole; / I will never cease to praise Him– / I’ll shout it while eternity rolls.”

Twixt speedway and ruts There’s a lot of talk of becoming all you want to be.

Whether in a religious, motivational or business setting the emphasis is on determining in your mind what you want to achieve and then daring to move forward in pursuit of your goal. I’m told that taking risks and knocking on new doors in spite of obstacles are just two of the necessary steps to realizing one’s dreams. In this case it’s all about focused activity.

Then there is the other side of story and it goes like this: “Choose your rut carefully. You’ll be in it for the next 200 miles.” I only recently heard that expression and learned that it is or was posted on road signs in preparation for particularly

rough sections of the Alaska Highway. The purpose was clear — to warn drivers of the dangers of straying from the safety of those ruts in the road. To me that sounds like supreme boredom, inertia and monotony. Necessary as well as admittedly much safer, but dull to the max.

In looking at these two extremes, there’s a lesson in moderation. In daring to take faith-based risks of trusting God even when we cannot see

the plan He has for our life, we find it tempting to race ahead in our own wisdom without consulting His word or waiting for His direction.

On the other hand, how many opportunities have been wasted because we were simply too comfortable to undertake new adventures? Refusing to expand our boundaries or allowing difficulties to stop us meets the description I once heard of a rut: simply a grave with both ends dug out. “ … Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!”

In moving forward, dare to draw upon His courage; in seeking direction, dare to pause.
