Call 306-446-3133 for more information. Don’t leave it too late, however, as seating is limited. Good news for Music for the Soul fans. There will be a piano duet recital Sunday, Oct. 20 at 3 p.m. at Third Avenue United Church. Pianist Jaya Hoy, who founded the music series with mezzo soprano Lisa Hornung, says that the recital, entitled “Duets!” was inspired by the visit of Geoffrey Pratley from the UK who taught and performed at Hornung’s Summer School for the Solo Voice this July. “Piano duets are in the air,” says Hoy. Hoy says she enjoyed performing a Mozart duet with Pratley as part of the Summer School recitals. A former Royal Academy of Music (London) professor, he and his partner Anne Applin formed a very successful duet partnership in 1990 and perform world-wide. Recently, Gustin House in Saskatoon hosted a duet recital with pianists Kathleen Lohrenz Gable and Che Anne Loewen and it received a tremendous response from the audience, adds Hoy. And, at this year’s Sask. Registered Music Teachers

annual convention, to be held in October in Unity, local pianist Dianne Gryba joins Saskatoon pianist Bonnie Nicholson in a piano duet recital. “There is just something completely delightful about this form of chamber music - for both the performers and audience,” says Hoy. “Something magical happens with piano duets. ” For the recital Oct. 20, Hoy will be joined by students Cole Knutson, David Patterson and Larissa Chipak. They will perform a four-hand arrangement of part of a Beethoven symphony and duets by Schubert, Dvorak, Grieg and Ravel. Profits from this concert are going to the piano fund for Third Avenue United Church for piano repairs and upkeep. Hoy provides the following history on duets: The first duet performance is believed to have taken place in London in 1765, when the nine-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with his sister Nannerl, played a Sonata composed by Mozart. Mozart composed, taught and performed duets throughout his life and did much to increase the popularity of music for four hands. At a time in the late 19th century when there were more pianos per household than bathtubs, duets became one of the most popular forms of music-making. Many new orchestral works were immediately arranged for piano duet so music lovers could learn and enjoy them. jayne@newsoptimist.ca .
