NORTH BATTLEFORD–
An award-winning Indigenous Cree author plans to visit North Battleford to give a reading from her highly acclaimed book Bad Cree.

Jessica Johns, a member of the Sucker Creek First Nation in Northern Alberta, will speak at North Battleford Library on Feb. 26, for a 1 p.m. session for students and a 6 p.m. engagement for the general public to enjoy.
Her talk is part of Indigenous Storytelling Month activities in February.
Johns' visit is offered through a partnership with the North Battleford Library, Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs (BATC), and Library Services for Saskatchewan Aboriginal Peoples (LSSAP).
Jordon Weenie, a director of Employment and Training with BATC, and also the creator of the Indigenous Book Club at North Battleford Library, is looking forward to Johns' presentation.
This is the third year of the collaborative effort to bring in Indigenous authors to the library for Indigenous Storytelling Month.
"Previously we brought in Michelle Good and Richard Van Camp," Weenie said.

"We're trying to really utilize and bring forward our local Indigenous authors."
He said he is thrilled to have Johns come to the Battlefords.
"I'm going to be starstruck because Bad Cree is such a good book," Weenie said. "It's an exciting book. It's a really well-told story that includes a lot of thriller and horror elements. That's somewhat of a rarity with

mainstream Indigenous content. That's what makes me excited, because we're now starting to explore all these different themes through different genres, and becoming a bit more mainstream with our storytelling. That's exciting."
He sees the book as a combination horror story and a coming-of-age story at the same time.
"It deals a lot with grief
and healing," Weenie added.
"It's a story about a woman rediscovering her past and some trauma that had happened, but done in a cleverly spooky way, with Indigenous culture."
He notes the book would interest everyone–Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.
Weenie said the themes are universal, so anyone could relate to it.
Bad Cree won the MacE-
wan Book of the Year Award, was shortlisted for the Amazon First Novel Award, and was on the 2024 CBC Canada Reads longlist. The Indigenous Book Club in North Battleford read Bad Cree in September of 2023. "They loved it," Weenie said. "A lot of the books that we read can be extremely political. But this one was different because of the horror

Shannon Powell Launches Truly U Wigs and Accessories: A Heartfelt Return to Supporting Cancer Patients

By Tammy Ramsay
Formerly, Shannon Powell had her business established at Discovery Coop Mall from 2017 to 2022. Now, she is back working from home and offering “in-home visits” when necessary through her new venture, Truly U Wigs and Accessories. Powell expresses her joy about this life change and is eager to reconnect with her cancer patients.

“I’m back to take care of my cancer patients!” she exclaims. After spending 10 months caring for her dad, she is ready to dive back into her work and retrieve all her patients' files. Powell is thrilled to see how many of her patients have found her again, and she hopes to reach out to more of them through their files.
There’s nothing that would make Powell happier than reconnecting with her patients. Both new and former patients have been reaching out, and she has also tried to reconnect with some as well. It feels like the perfect puzzle coming together. Known for her big heart, Powell embraces everyone she encounters with warmth and care.
She serves patients in Battlefords and the surrounding areas, including Maymont, Radisson, Glaslyn, Meadow Lake, St. Walburg, Neilburg, Lloydminster, Unity, Wilkie, and Cutknife. What makes Powell stand out from other businesses in her field? According to Powell, it's her commitment to providing personalized care. "I take more time with each patient," she explains. "I really listen to them and strive to find the perfect hairpiece. I don’t just sell it from a box; I sit down with them to show them how to take care of their 'new hair.'
If they purchase from me, I even offer a custom cut for free, drawing on my 30 years as a journeyperson stylist."
Powell is also a certified topper and full wig fitter, enabling her to alter the sizes of wigs and toppers as needed.
Each client receives a free stand for their new piece, as Powell believes, "If they love it, then I’ve done my job." Her goal is to ensure they leave with a “HUGE SMILE.”
As a crucial part of her patients' cancer journeys, Powell assists breast cancer
patients in finding the right post-surgical bras and those needed for prostheses. She is a certified prosthesis fitter for Amoena and ABC, as well as an RX-certified Sigvaris stocking fitter. This means she can accurately measure clients, order the right size, and help them submit for insurance coverage. Powell operates as a medical provider and can file claims for most personal health benefits and Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) for Indigenous patients with a treaty number.
Patients may qualify for three post-surgical bras per year and a prosthesis every two years through their health care benefits, as well as Sigvaris RX prescriptions. NIHB may not realize these options are available as well, but Powell encourages anyone to reach out for assistance. "Just contact me, and I will help you with the application process," she urges. If you need support, don’t hesitate to reach out to her at 306 228 7831 or on Facebook at Truly U Wigs and Accessories. Powell is looking forward to helping you in any way she can!
Author of award-winning book “Bad Cree” coming to North Battleford
Weenie said. "There's humour there that everyone will get, and there's humour there that Indigenous people will understand."

Continued from page 1 element. It was a completely different story than what we're normally used to reading. We still talk about it. We still talk about the characters. We still talk about the story, because it left that much of an impact. It was a good read. Everyone loved it. Even people who don't love horror really liked the book."
He noted there are many comic elements in the book also that readers will enjoy. "It's a mixture of humour,"
Weenie hopes Johns' visit will inspire others to write their dreams and stories also.
"I hope they feel inspired to go home and write whatever it is that they want to write," he said.
Weenie said he hopes to start a writing club in the future, so budding writers can "write the stories of our beautiful town."
"I know there are writers here that are ready to come out and share their stories," he said.
With Indigenous Storytelling Month running all of February, Weenie hopes it encourages people to listen and to understand, to discover Indigenous stories. "That's where we live," he said. "We live in our stories. That's how we understand who we are–our identities, our culture, where we come from, and how we relate to one another."

Trent Angus’s death deemed a homicide in Coroner’s Inquest
By Angela Brown SaskToday.ca
NORTH BATTLEFORD–The three-day Coroner's Inquest into the death of Trent Byron Angus concluded at the Dekker Centre in North Battleford Feb. 12.
The six-person jury found that Angus died by homicide, with multiple gunshot wounds to his abdomen and head on Feb. 27, 2022, between 12:03 a.m. and 12:07 a.m., according to the Saskatchewan Coroner's Service.
The jury did not make any recommendations.
In an email to SaskToday, the Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice and Attorney General stated: "The inquest jury is responsible for ascertaining the identity of the deceased and how, when, where and by what means the person died. They may also make recommendations to pre -

NORTH
BATTLEFORD–
The woman who was reported as the victim of a kidnapping following a carjacking incident in North Battleford has now been found, police reported on Feb. 14 at 2:22 p.m.
At approximately 1:25 p.m., Saskatchewan RCMP located Leanna Frenchman safe at a residence on St. Laurent Drive in North Battleford.
On Feb. 14 at approximately 5 a.m., Battlefords RCMP received a report of an armed robbery on Railway Avenue E. in North Battleford.
Officers responded immediately and determined an adult male, who was armed with a firearm, approached a vehicle with two adult females inside. The adult male threatened the vehicle occupants and stole the vehicle. One of the females, 33-yearold Leanna Frenchman, was reportedly still inside. Based on their initial investigation and the report made, Battlefords RCMP had initially not located Frenchman and
vent similar deaths if they feel it is appropriate."
According to The Coroners Act, 1999, the jury shall, at the conclusion of the inquest, retire to consider the evidence and determine the identity of the deceased and how, when, where and by what means the deceased died. The jury shall not make any finding of legal responsibility. The jury may make any recommendation that it considers to be of assistance in preventing similar deaths.
The inquest was ordered after the Saskatoon Police Service conducted an independent, external investigation surrounding Angus’s death.
Angus was fatally shot by RCMP on Feb. 27, 2022, during a raid on an industrial building in Waseca.
During the raid, two men and one woman exited the building but a fourth person, Trent Angus, stayed
inside and wouldn’t comply with police commands, said RCMP.
When Angus exited the building he still wouldn’t comply with police commands, said RCMP, so they used non-lethal methods to force him to comply. Officers said, however, that they saw Angus display a firearm and gunfire was exchanged. An RCMP officer received a non-life-threatening injury during the incident.
One of the four officers who attended on the day of the shooting, with the aim to execute a search warrant, testified Feb. 11:
He was carrying a 40-millimetre launcher, a device that projects sponge-like projectiles.
"It sounds like a gunshot," he explained of the device.
"My role was to get on the scene," he said.
The Coroner's counsel, lawyer Blaine Beaven,

asked the officer to describe the events of the day.
He was accompanied by three other officers at the site. They were all stationed outside the building near the water tank.
The officer who testified Feb. 11 was looking for surveillance cameras to try to shoot at, but couldn't see any.
He noted three subjects came out of the building and were taken into custody.
He then heard gunshots coming from inside the building.
gus came out with his left hand in the air, possibly to try to push away the CS gas, while his right hand was hidden in his sweater pocket.
"I was concerned he had a weapon in his sweater, potentially a handgun," he said. "He didn't listen [to the police commands]."
The officer then aimed his 40-millimetre launcher toward Angus's leg.
He said he hoped by shooting a launcher round the subject would comply.
Attorney Emily Arthur, with the Department of Justice, from the counsel representing the RCMP, next questioned the officer about the lighting at the time of the event.
He noted it was dark outside, but there was brightness coming from all the vehicle lights on during the incident.
therefore considered her missing.
The second adult female exited the vehicle and reported no physical injuries to police.
Initial investigation indicated Frenchman may have been in the presence of an adult male, who was reportedly armed. Initial investigation has determined Frenchman and the adult male are not known to one another. They were last seen driving in North Battleford in a red 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix with Saskatchewan licence plate 186 NSA.
Saskatchewan RCMP continues to investigate and an update will be provided when available.
Saskatchewan RCMP’s General Investigation Section (GIS) is investigating the incident with the support of the Battlefords RCMP Detachment.
As a result of continued investigation, officers located the red 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix in a residential area on St. Laurent Drive in North Battleford at approximately 10:30 a.m., Feb. 14. The male suspect and Frenchman
were not located with the vehicle. Officers actively made patrols and continued working to locate Frenchman.
Residents in the area will note an increased police presence while this investigation continues.
Saskatchewan RCMP are asking business owners and residents who witnessed suspicious activity or captured home surveillance video in the area of St. Laurent Drive in North Battleford the morning of Feb. 14 to contact police immediately. Police are especially interested if your device captured the red Pontiac Grand Prix.
The suspect is described as a male with a round-shaped face, last seen wearing a baggy red sweater and jeans. Police do not have any other descriptors at this time.
If you have information about this investigation, contact your local police at 310-RCMP immediately or 911 in an emergency, or Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.saskcrimestoppers. com.

The police released CS gas, a type of tear gas, into the air.
The officer said he then saw the green side-door open and a male subject came out. He did not at the time know it was Angus.
He recalled police told the man to come out with his hands up.
But the officer noted An-
When Angus was shot by the projectile he screamed and yelled, said the officer.
Then, he saw Angus' gun.
"I saw the male subject with a handgun. I yelled: 'gun, gun, gun.'"
He then heard shots, and then saw Angus in a prone position.
Then, he radioed the RCMP to say the team was involved in a shooting.
The officer said after he shot the 40-millimetre launcher, he looked down and saw that the subject was pointing a firearm at the RCMP.
"He pulled out a handgun ...," he said. "He was pointing it at us."
Beaven then asked if there was any plan to shoot at the incident. The officer said there wasn't a plan to shoot anybody.
"We wanted the subject to exit peacefully, to take them into custody," he said. - With files from Lisa Joy

The GST holiday lesson
By R.H. Wood North Battleford
My “Wood Pile” contribution last week apparently contained too many long words, and for this, I apologize. However, as I have explained in the past, these words may have been in my head for more than two generations and desperately want out – “prolixity,” a favorite, was ever so happy. “Orthography,” the art of spelling, was never my strong point, but I remember receiving much praise from Miss Phillips, my teacher, awe from classmates, and astonishment for myself when I spelled

“neighbor” correctly more than 75 years ago. For this week I decided to use only small words containing only three letters – I gave up after two sentences and switched to four letters. This did not last long, and I gave up this line of thought which was a waste of time. However, it took my mind off current affairs and how our leaders – so-called politicians, are getting this world into more
and more trouble. Even the three-letter word, “war” can be heard. The prime troublemakers each have only five letters in their name – Trump and Putin. Hitler and Stalin had six letters each.
Mr. Trump has a preoccupation with Arctic waters pointing out that global warming is making them more navigable, especially for foreign shipping and weaponry. Our northern reaches are thus more susceptible to attack and invasion as is the American mainland. While this is all true surely the next war will involve mainly aerial and missile attacks.

Mr. Poilievre is now promoting Canadian sovereignty with flag waving and drum beating. He is no longer clarifying the “Axe the Tax” slogan as this has been adopted by the two-tongued Liberal Party. They are likening Mr. Poilievre to Mr. Trump while Mr. Carney is becoming more Churchillian in speech and garb. Meanwhile, Mr. Trudeau has been for a final goodwill trip to Europe at our expense to polish up his image just before “Cherry Blossom” time – who else remembers this still available footwear product? I am sure he will be awarded an international position although
Mr. Trump may voice his opinion.
According to the Liberals, we have just enjoyed a surprise holiday meaning a sixweek break in paying tax on a limited range of items. Such arrogance – it was no holiday – it was an undisguised attempt to attract votes. For us, the surprise was not that over Christmas we saved about $60 on GST and HST, it was that to reach that figure we must have spent more than $1000 on an appropriate, but limited range of items, never mind whatever else we paid for at home and on a short visit to B.C. to watch grandson hockey.
Management

Prorogation of Parliament means that most of our elected representatives who enjoy a good salary plus expenses and benefits have been paid for achieving nothing for weeks on end and yet they feel they should be re-elected. With world chaos brewing, our government not functioning, a general election looming, this country heading for bankruptcy, and Mr. Trump thinking up new tariffs and making repeated threats forcing us to become the 51st state, I have some choice words for the situation we are in – some quite long and some impolitely small.

Avoid frozen pipes this winter with expert advice
NEWS RELEASE From Corporate Office of HomeStars – With freezing temperatures continuing across Canada this week, many Canadians are at risk of frozen–or burst–pipes. Temperatures are predicted to range from two degrees Celsius to minus 40 Celsius this upcoming week.
Extreme weather can wreak havoc on our homes, even when they are used to cold temperatures. From broken furnaces to burst pipes, there’s an array of inconvenient and expensive issues it’s best to avoid. Residents might not be aware that pipes can freeze if your home drops under a mild 14 degrees Celsius–meaning homes left alone are at risk if their heating isn’t scheduled to stay on. While this may seem like a high temperature for freeze risk, there are various factors that can cause pipes to freeze at or below this temperature. These can include wind chill, water flow, or the location of the pipes.
HomeStars.com, the reliable way to hire pros, has advised on how best to protect your home from the ravages of sub-zero temperatures. From the temperature you need to keep your home at internally, to locating your shut-off valve, they are simple tips that anyone can follow.
Colleen McGrory, from HomeStars. com, said: “Cold weather can wreak havoc on our homes and outside spaces. As always, preparing for the weather in advance is always the best option–but there are also some last-minute jobs you can do to protect your home.
“Frozen pipes are a particular problem and can cause plenty of issues with leaks long after the cold weather has left. If you follow our top tips your home will be well prepared for the forthcoming cold weather and prevent any issues from occurring."
HomeStars.com expert tips include:
Protect your outdoor faucets
Frozen outdoor faucets can add serious pressure to your internal pipes. It’s good practice to disconnect any hoses over winter and drain any outside water supply, as well as insulate any outdoor faucets. Keeping your faucets safe in the winter is simple with a 20-dollar faucet jacket from a retailers. This simple insulated protector cover can save you from a whole host of problems if the worst were to happen to an exposed outdoor faucet.
Know where your main shut-off valve is–and turn your water off If you have an emergency from a

broken outdoor faucet, you’ll quickly need to know where your shut-off valve is located. This is normally found near your foundation wall and close to the water meter. If you think you won’t find it easily, consider adding a tag to it so it can be quickly found in an emergency. It’s also advisable to turn your water off at the valve if going away for a lengthy period, especially over the winter months, as this will prevent any leaks or burst pipes.
Regular furnace service
The last thing anyone needs when the temperature plunges is a broken furnace. An annual furnace service will ensure any potential issues are nipped in the bud. Should your furnace break during freezing weather, you’ll not only be facing a cold house, but it could lead to burst pipes should the water inside them freeze.
Keep your heating on low or use a timer
We recommend keeping your thermostat on around 15 degrees when away from your home. While it’s understandable that homeowners don’t want to spend money on heating an empty home, it’s important to maintain a reasonable temperature while you’re away, as temperatures as low as 14 internally can lead to frozen pipes. Make sure that the coldest part of your house won’t dip below this temperature. If you don’t have a thermostat, you can use the timer on your furnace for the heating to come on for a short time per day.
Install smart technology
Another option for a thermostat or timer is using smart technology to control the temperature of your home. You

can use the smart thermostat to set the temperature you prefer, wherever you are and whenever you want. Smart thermostats allow you to remotely set the temperature and timings of your heating system, meaning that you can change it as and when you need.
Insulate
Insulating the colder parts of your home will help prevent freezing pipes from colder temperatures. You can insulate your pipes internally and externally, exterior walls, water tanks, and your attic space. Good insulation also protects your home from hot weather, so it’s worth the investment. Pay particular attention to any pipes that are most likely to freeze, such as those located near exterior walls or in the basement. Insulating furnace blankets and pipe covers can be purchased from hardware stores and are effective at protecting pipes and reducing energy bills.
Manage airflow at home
To help keep your home at a consistent temperature, allow warm air to pass through the house via open internal doors. If your tanks or pipes are in cupboards, leave your cupboards open to allow warm air to circulate too. You should also ensure your home is protected from any cold air from outside. It’s worth adding draft excluders to any doors and windows if they’re letting the cold in. Seal air leaks and gaps around your home–apply weather strips to close gaps in your doors and windows to stop cold air from getting in.
If your pipes do burst you will need to contact an emergency plumber to fix it, but make sure to turn off the main water supply valve ASAP!

Frozen pipes like these can lead to costly repairs if not properly insulated and maintained. | Photo by HomeStars
Armchair Gardening
By Paticia Hanbidge Orchid Horticulture
This is the perfect time of year to become an armchair gardener. Winter is still in full force and there is enough snow outside that not much can be done. There is time to sit and read, cover to cover, each seed catalog that arrives in the mailbox........and if you are not receiving enough catalogs–just ask your friends or turn on the computer! There is a whole world of gardening possibilities at your fingertips! The new varieties, the tried and true, the heritage, the odd and unusual or hardto-find seeds are all out there.
If you find you are having trouble deciding what new seeds to order for the garden, there is plenty of help available. A good source for searching out catalogs is as close as your home computer. Type in ‘garden seed sources for the prairies’ or any variety you can think of and you will be amazed at what appears. If you subscribe to any of the gardening magazines they too will usually contain a listing of different seed suppliers. You have just enough time to read through these listings, pick out a few, order the catalogs, or shop online. After all, we likely still will have a few days of winter ahead.
To have the most success possible it is helpful to understand a little bit about the common terms used in seed catalogs. Reading the small print about each selection is important. Vegetable varieties are listed with days to harvest, which means from the seeding date to when you can harvest your vegetables. This will always vary within a week or two depending on the weather. In Saskatchewan, you can usually rely on a late spring frost so be prepared.
Other terms you might need help deciphering include: heirloom, heritage, open-pollinated, and hybrid. Many plant varieties are hybrids meaning the flowers of two related species have been cross-pollinated to produce a new flower or vegetable variety that exhibits superior growth or hybrid vigor. The

seed from hybrid varieties will likely be sterile, however, if it does germinate, it is unlikely that the flowers or vegetables will be like the parent plant. The plants may be sterile and not produce flowers at all. If you wish to save seeds from what you plant, then it will be important to grow open-pollinated, also commonly called heritage or heirloom plants. These plants, as they breed true, are not a hybrid cross so saving seeds from these plants will produce very similar plants when the seeds from these plants are grown. Last but not least, it is important to understand the difference between annual, biennial, and perennial. Annuals are plants that will complete their entire lifecycle in one growing season – germinate, grow, flower, and set seed. In less severe climates, what we consider annuals are often perennial–

but for us on the prairies they are most definitely annuals. The Board did not decide on when advertising for a new Manager will begin.
Although the Accountant from Vintage Chartered Accounting was unable to attend, he made a copy of the 2024 Audit available.

The Manager, President, and Others indicated a huge "Thank You " be extended to all the Sponsors, who time and time again help with their donations. Without their sponsorship, it would
be a real struggle to put on Events. As in any organization, Volunteers are the ones that make an event successful. The two little words " Thank You" do not fully convey how appreciative the BAS is for all you do.
