The men who will be leading the charge behind the bench for the Battlefords North Stars this winter have been announced. In a press conference at the Civic Centre Wednesday morning, it was revealed that Brandon Heck will be the head coach and general manager for the defending Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League champions while Boyd Wakelin will be the new assistant coach. Heck, 32, has been the coach of
the Camrose Red Wings for the last four seasons in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League and has also been involved in the season-ending Alberta Cup bantam showcase tournament in recent years. Wakelin will be a familiar face to many North Stars fans. The Battleford product played for the team from 2007-2012 and just finished a five-year stint playing in the Alberta College Athletics Conference for the Augustana Vikings. Heck and Wakelin will be replacing Nate Bedford and Braeden Johnson, who left their roles earlier in the ** In-store, instant savings (before taxes) valid on qualifying KitchenAid® appliances purchased from a participating authorized Canadian KitchenAid® appliance dealer from July 27, 2017 – August 30, 2017. One-in-20-year storm drenches city Staff
The Battlefords were hit by a major storm this week, seeing flooding of streets and basements, particularly in North Battleford. A press release issued by the City of North Battleford Wednesday stated “a major rain on Aug. 8 commencing at 2:44 a.m. continuing to 7:50 a.m. has strained the city’s storm
sewer infrastructure.” The amount of rain the city received is described in the release as a one-in20-year storm, with approximately 59 mm of rain during this period. “City crews are hard at work ensuring that all storm systems are open and that flooded streets are blocked from traffic,” said the release. The public was asked to avoid driving through
flooded areas and to be mindful of pedestrians and other vehicles while driving through any puddles. The release concluded, “City crews are assisting individuals who are experiencing flooding in their basements. If you require assistance, please contact City Hall at 306-4451700. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we deal with these above average rainfalls.”
pital until Sept. 18. The new scanner cost $1.2 million. The provincial government provided half the funding, while the BUH Foundation raised the other half. Lloydminster is also getting a new CT scanner. Replacement will begin on Sept. 24, and is expected to be completed on Nov. 5. Lloydminster will receive the mobile CT scanner after the new scanner installation in North Battleford is complete. Prairie North Health Region provides CT services to more than 10,000 patients each year.
“CT services are an essential element of our health region’s medical imaging program,” Prairie North Chief Executive Officer David Fan says. “Sustaining and upgrading these services with the purchase and installation of new, up-to-date equipment and technology is vital for our patients and our health care providers. We are grateful for the provincial funding and for our local health foundation partners, who eagerly committed to raising the necessary dollars to enhance services for their communities.”
New CT scanner for BUH due to be operational by mid-September Staff Replacement of the computed tomography (CT) scanner at the Battlefords Union Hospital began Aug. 8. Installing the new machine, along with renovations to the CT room, is expected to take six weeks. Sept. 18 is the planned date for the new CT scanner to be operational. The new machine will capture more information than the machines currently used, along with better quality images and less radiation exposure. A mobile CT scanner will be available at the hos-

No answer to plant problem
Dear Editor; Thank you for printing my letter regarding the Viterra influenced ad about how many people one farmer fed in 1900 and how many he supposedly feeds today. However, the line “ – a farmer would have little left to sell,” somehow was changed to “ – a farmer would have little left to seed.” There’s quite a difference. And still on the subject of growing things, some people have asked if I had an answer from the Department of Agriculture about the devastating plant problem of last summer. The answer is still no. The department either doesn’t know or doesn’t care; is there any difference? The main loss here this year is the potato crop, so completely curled that I have decided to destroy the plants. I did see the curling problem in the greenhouse of a big box store. I didn’t tell the manager. At one time I would have felt obliged to help, but life has given me my own slant on the poet Charles Kingsley’s well-known line about being obliged to help dogs over fences. I have found that very often the dog has kicked me in the face as I help it over and onward, and the last I see of it is its rear end. It’s probably then off to tell other dogs it got over the fence all by itself. Big box stores can get along without me. I’d make no difference to their bottom line over a few curled up plants. But let the buyer beware. Christine Pike Waseca
Writer looking for family information
Dear Editor I am seeking assistance in tracing relatives of Alec Royal Rodwell and Elizabeth Craig Rodwell (nee Lennox). Alec was born in Burnham Overy, Norfolk, England, on May 7, 1897. His parents were Marion and Walter Rodwell, “Ironmonger’s Assistant.” Elizabeth Craig Lennox, was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Aug. 28, 1889. Her parents were Annie (nee McDonald) and Peter Lennox, “Brass Finisher.” Alec arrived in Canada sometime in 1909 and is listed on the 1916 Census as being the head of household on the Prairie. Alec was granted a parcel of land designated as NE 20-40-18-W3 in the North Battleford area. I understand that Alec worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway for some of his working life.
Last week’s News-Optimist online poll:
Elizabeth Craig Lennox arrived in Canada sometime after Jan. 29, 1909 via Buffalo, N.Y. In later life they lived on Vancouver Island, B. C. I would be most grateful for any information that would help my search for information about Elizabeth, her family and possible descendants. Please feel free to contact me either by email at twining@netspace.net.au or by phone +61 3 62292564. Russell Twining Kingston, Tasmania, Australia

First World problems in southwest Manitoba First off, this column carries a First World problems warning. Secondly, it’s being typed on an cell phone, one which, horror of horrors, has endured a summer of very poor cell coverage. We’re on our way to the family cabin at Sandy Lake, Man. It’s about 20 minutes from Clear Lake, Riding Mountain National Park. Sandy Lake is a nice little hamlet, not some resort village in the boonies. It’s well within what most people would consider civilization. But in the 21st century context, it might as well be the moon. Anyone who complains about SaskTel cellular service, shut up and cross the line into southern Manitoba. I’ll show you what poor service is. As soon as you cross the border, it’s like you enter the portion of the map labelled “there be dragons.” Unless you are on Highway 1, cellular coverage in almost all of southwest Manitoba is atrocious to the point of almost nonexistent. I have heard this many times from people in Manitoba’s oilpatch, which is only found in this region. Only near Virden and close proximity to Rivers do we get anything approaching the level of

Association 2012 Columnist of the Year service I get in almost any pasture in southeast Saskatchewan. Trust me, covering the oilpatch, I spend a lot of time in pastures. It doesn’t matter if it’s a small town or secondary highway; in southwest Manitoba your coverage is garbage. On the Main Street of Sandy Lake, I cannot make a call, or check email. At our cabin I have found that I can occasionally get three bars slanting on the left side of the barbecue, but not the right. I was doing stories on Virden for Pipeline News and staying in the camper we have as a bunkhouse at the cabin. The only way I could make calls is to slightly open an overhead cupboard, put the phone on speakerphone, and talk at it from a certain angle. We had a contractor doing work on the cabin. I watched the foreman climb on top of the load on their semi, trying to get a call out. I’m not certain
he was successful. Most of the locals don’t have semis conveniently available to climb on. In nearby Erickson, it is also nearly impossible to make a cell phone call. We discovered the Co-op Building Centre there had good coverage, but why? It turns out they had to install a cellular booster in the building. I finally found I could get four bars if I parked on the side of the road near a house on the top of a hill along the highway at Sandy Lake. That’s how I phoned home once a day. I suspect they wondered why this Ford kept parking there, but I think they know they have the only real cell coverage around and put two and two bars together to get four. First World problems, right? Sure, until you realize how intrinsic wireless communication is in everyday life in the 21st century. It’s beyond just phone calls. It’s email,
social media, banking through your phone, even the basic functions of phones. For instance, iPhones will often offload music to the cloud, making room for other items in its onboard memory. Works fine if you have coverage, but not worth a damn in southwest Manitoba. In the oilpatch, wells often have cellular-based telemetry to transmit 24/7 what is going on. But how do they do that if they can’t rely on the cellular system? Someone told me the oil company had to set up their own radio system instead.

rest of Manitoba might as well not exist outside the provincial centre of the universe, Winnipeg. I have not struggled with cellular coverage this bad in rural Saskatchewan since the 1990s. Here, it’s the norm. The less-than-helpful guys at the Bell MTS store in the Brandon mall explained it will take several more years for things to improve. I guess southwest Manitoba gets to join the 21st century 20 years late. Brian Zinchuk is editor of Pipeline News. He can be reached at brian. zinchuk@sasktel.net.

Many vehicles now offer built-in hotspots. I wonder how that works here? Using my iPhone as a hotspot, it turns into a cold spot the precise moment we cross the border. I can work anywhere I have internet. I don’t need to be sitting at a desk. But doing so here has been difficult, to say the least. I’m only a visitor. I’ve asked lots of locals, and they all have similar experiences. Essentially, cell coverage in Manitoba is awful unless you are on a major highway or in a major centre. It confirms my hypothesis that the

500 plus gather in Paynton to celebrate 150 Submitted
On Saturday, Aug. 5, more than 500 people gathered in Paynton to celebrate Canada’s 150th Birthday. They used the celebration to unveil their first ever Paynton History Book. Over the last four years a committee of 12 has been working hard to create a history book for the community. What they didn’t realize is all of the great information they would find in their research. One book slowly turned into two and on Saturday the community got their first glimpse at the books. Because of the response there were two different sittings of the presentation and performance, one at 2 p.m. and one at 4 p.m. The presentation was emceed by Clifford Murphy and the books were unveiled by committee members Marie Ferguson and Roxanne Valliere followed in by honoured guests who helped out with a lot of the photos and stories from the early days. The presentation started with the singing of O Canada by Karla Ferguson and her daughter, Mabel McManus. The Reeve of the RM of Paynton, Kevin Garrett, and the mayor of Paynton, Karolyn Kirby, brought greetings from the community, with Kirby’s message being read by Marg Webb. MLA Larry Doke brought greetings from the Provincial Government and MP Gerry Ritz sent a message which was read by the MC. The committee said their thank yous to the community and everyone who helped out on the project and then handed out gifts to the people in attendance over 90 years of age, and to the families that came the farthest. They then awarded certificates to all of the families who have been in the community for four or more generations, with engraved plaques given to the seven and eight generational families for their longevity. Some roots run deep in the community, being a part of more than one family through various marriages, and plaques were given to six families for having seven or eight Paynton families as their heritage. We then enjoyed a wonderful performance called Welcome Home written by Kathy Covert, a former

Spiritwood features work of local artists
‘ We used to be known for the rodeo, now we’re going to be known for the arts.’ By Josh Greschner Staff Reporter
Along Spiritwood’s Main Street are sights you wouldn’t expect to see in a town of 1,000. In the library’s window are lakeside scenes, while in the window of The Nines hair salon, stands a rooster in bold colour. A number of businesses along Spiritwood’s Main Street are featuring the work of local artists and artists from the surrounding area in its windows. The idea was Heather Beauchesne’s, a local physiotherapist and artist. In 2016, artist Mavis Bellisle approached Beauchesne to establish the presence of art in town. Beauchesne, along with Northern Lakes Economic Development Corporation’s Managing Director Bevra Fee, asked local businesses if they’d allow for art to be showcased in display windows they weren’t using. The first building to have art in its windows was the RM of Spiritwood building. Businesses gradually allowed art to be displayed in their windows, although Beauchesne said it was sometimes a hard sell
at the beginning. “A lot of people wanted to wait and see before they’d say yes to something.” Now, Fee said, there is art in “pretty much all the windows in town that are available.” Beauschesne said she initially expected only three or four artists to participate, but interest grew. The work of 12 artists is currently featured. Fee was also surprised by the local interest. “I didn’t know a little northern prairie town was interested in the arts,” Fee said. “It’s not only locals, it’s tourism. Lots of people come through the area. It’s really sparked an interest I didn’t know we had.” Artists that came along with the Regional Optimist for a tour were Mavis Bellisle, Taylor Olson, Monica Kitching, Rigmor Clarke from Shell Lake, Nathan Pinsent from Leoville (who said he’s been marketing himself for 26 years), and Pat Jacobson. Most featured artists are self-taught, with some art classes here and there. Fee and Beauchesne said the plan is to try to secure funding for a gallery space and an artist-in-residence. The gallery space would be
the RM building in town. In order to prevent too much art in the building at once, Fee said an option is to showcase the work of two artists at once, while the other work would stay in its respective windows. “We’ve had so much interest with people coming into the offices and businesses where the artwork is, looking for the gallery,” Fee said. Pat Jacobson said she likes the art along Main Street because not needing to go into a building allows for more people to see the art, and walking tours offer an opportunity to walk around and chat. Jacobson has displayed her work in the Chapel and Allen Sapp galleries in North Battleford. She said people are more likely to judge art that’s in a gallery, rather than just admire it. “Sometimes as an artist it doesn’t matter to me if they like it or not,” Jacobson said. Along Main Street, “if you like it, you like it. If you don’t, you don’t.” Monica Kitching said she enjoys the opportunity to display her work to the public. “I’m 60 and starting over again on a new journey in
life.” She said her family inspired her to start painting again. “The door’s open for me, and I’m loving it.” Art in Main Street windows began in May and will continue until September. Beauchesne wrote in an email that the program wasn’t driven by an artist collective, but rather by individuals and town representatives. Artists in the Spiritwood and surrounding area are encouraged to contact Beauchesne or Fee. Featuring art in Main Street windows, Beauchesne added, is something any town can start doing. Fee said she’s embracing Spiritwood’s new artistic side. “We used to be known for the rodeo, now we’re going to be known for the arts,” Fee said. She said she often hears of rural towns disappearing and changing for the worse, but art along Main Street is an example of the community thriving. “We’re holding our own and maybe even winning the battle a bit.”

Bandits impress as Western Canadian hosts By Lucas Punkari Sports Reporter
Going into a major tournament is always an interesting experience. Being the host team and being involved in the event preparations to make sure everything goes off without a hitch is an even harder task. For the Battleford Bandits, not only did they find themselves right in the mix for a playoff spot all weekend, but they had to host the 2017 Western Canadian U14 Softball Championship at Battlefords Flats Park. “Coming into this weekend with eight teams from Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan coming here, we really didn’t know what to expect,” Bandits coach Regan Lavallee said. “The girls exceeded my expectations with how well they held their own in every game and we were in the tournament right until the end. “I know everyone involved with the host committee has been so busy, especially in the last week leading up to this in making sure everything was okay, but it seems like everyone enjoyed themselves and it was a great experience for the out of town teams.” The Bandits started

off the tournament with a pair of victories Friday, as they edged out the Sherwood Park Storm from Sherwood Park, Alta., in a 8-7 affair and then prevailed over the Manitoba Thunder from Winnipeg in a 11-10 slugfest. Despite dropping a 6-4 battle to the British Columbia based South Delta Invaders Friday night and suffering 12-5 and 6-0 setbacks to the Lloydminster Liners of Alberta and the eventual champion Surrey Storm of British Columbia, the Bandits still had a chance to make the playoffs en-
tering their final roundrobin game. Although they came up short in a 9-2 contest with the Westman Magic from Brandon, Man., the Bandits’ fate was already sealed earlier in the morning Sunday when the Unity Panthers won their game and ended any chance of a tiebreaker. “For the most part, we had a chance to get runs on the board in every game that we played, but we just weren’t able to capitalize on our chances,” Lavallee said. “We would have loved to have come away with a win in the final day, but it
didn’t work out for us. We were able to make sure everyone got in to play in our last game though, which was something we wanted to do.” To prepare for the Western Canadians, the Bandits spent the season playing games in the Girls Prairie League Softball circuit, which saw them in mini-tournaments throughout the course of the summer. “The level of play that we faced from the teams we saw from Alberta was very similar to what we faced here, so that really helped us get to used to the type of games that we
had over the weekend,” Lavallee said. “I remember thinking that we would be in tough against the British Columbia teams, as we had heard that they were very good, but I was really proud of how well they hung in against them.” When it came to the behind the scenes operations of the Western Canadians, the one major concern was with what Mother Nature had to offer over the course of the four-day event. The biggest challenge came at the completion of Friday’s slate of games, as a storm left the four fields wet. “The outfield looked like a river was running through it at one point,” Lavallee said. “When we arrived Saturday morning, it was completely soaked. “Our grounds crew did a fabulous job of getting everything fixed up. We saw what they could do a year ago when we hosted the U12 provincials and they could get the job done here. They exceeded what they did a year ago and they jumped on any issues that we had.” One of the people that noticed the amount of work that the volunteers put into the event was Phil Ransome, who is the coach of the boys’ division champion Barriere
Bruins from British Columbia. “When we got that rain Friday night, we were all scared to death of what the field conditions were going to be like the next day,” Ransome said. “The amount of time that the grounds crew put in to make sure that all of the fields were staying together was amazing. The facilities were awesome, the volunteers were great and we would come back to Battleford any time.” With the season now over, the Bandits will now go their separate ways, though a few players will be involved in camps to try and make the provincial softball team for the 2019 Western Summer Games in Swift Current. “It’s a pretty lengthy process to get to those games with a lot of girls trying out for it, but I think this experience should help them out,” Lavallee said. “Most of the girls from this team will be moving up in the ranks, except for five players who are eligible to come back. “When they look back on this whole weekend, I hope they realize how good a level of ball they competed at here. We faced some great competition, and I’m very proud of how they preformed and how well they faired as a host team.”

From start to finish, there was no stopping a pair of British Columbia teams at Battleford Flats Park over the Civic Holiday weekend. The Barriere Bruins and Surrey Storm both went undefeated on their way to capturing the boys’ and girls’ titles respectively
at the 2017 Western Canadian U14 Softball Championship Monday afternoon. “I didn’t know what the guys had done until our game had finished so it was pretty cool that we both accomplished that,” Storm coach John Herdman said. “I was really happy to see our girls have a great week here. We had a fifth place in our provincials, and there were a lot
of tears afterwards, so it was really nice to see them with a smile on their face again.” “It certainly wasn’t as easy as we made it out to be,” Bruins coach Phil Ransome added. “It took a while for our team to get used to being here and there was some really tough competition, as every game was fairly tight all tournament.”

to support the body in its natural immune process. It contains a compound called DSL that has amazing antioxidant at properties. This compound is not present in unfermented teas (though many teas are high in other antioxidants). DSL has been specifically identified a beneficial for cellular detoxification. • More Nutritious Alternative to Soda - Kombucha is a great alternative to sugar-laden drinks like soda. It is naturally carbonated. This means that the second fermentation process naturally produces bubbles and carbonation. Sodas, on the other hand, are artificially carbonated by forcing carbonation into the liquid. This fizzy fermented tea is an attractive alternative to other carbonated beverages and provides probiotics and nutrients not present in soda. Kombucha also contains less sugar than soft drinks. The sugar in the recipe is simply food for the beneficial bacteria and is largely consumed during the fermentation process. Nutter’s carries multiple bands of Kombucha, each with varying flavors and sizes. Always consult with your health care physician before starting any supplement program. Pregnant and nursing moms and anyone with a medical condition should check with a doctor before consuming. It contains both caffeine and sugar, which should be limited during pregnancy.

or milk/water kefir. Once a very obscure drink, Kombucha is now a popular beverage that is now widely available. Many people also brew at home using various methods. To be clear - it isn’t magic pill or silver bullet, but it may help the body function in many different ways including: • Improving Digestion Kombucha contains probiotics, enzymes and beneficial acids that have been researched for their gut health benefits. Harvard Medical School explains that a healthy gut will have 100 trillion + microorganisms from 500 different identified species. In this sense, we truly are more bacterial than human. Drinks like Kombucha contain billions of these beneficial bacteria, enzymes and acids that help keep the gut in balance. • Natural Detoxification and Liver Support - The liver is one of the body’s main detoxification organs. Kombucha is high in glucaric acid, which is beneficial to the liver and aids its natural detoxification. As Kombucha also supports healthy gut bacteria and digestion, it helps the body assimilate food more easily and provides quick and easy energy without caffeine. • Immune Boost - Kombucha is naturally high in antioxidants and supportive of the immune system. Again, there is no magic pill or silver bullet when it comes to immune function - it is best

Have you heard of Kombucha, the beverage the ancient Chinese called the “Immortal Health Elixir?” It’s been around from more than 2,000 years and has a rich anecdote history of health benefits. Kombucha is a traditional fermented drink made of black tea and sugar. It contains a variety of vitamins, minerals and enzymes and has been prized by traditional cultures for its health-promoting properties. More specifically, Kombucha is a sweetened tea that is fermented with a SCOBY to become a nutrient-rich beverage. The SCOBY, or Symbiotic Colony of Bacteria and Yeast, is the collection of microbes responsible for turning sweet tea into a probiotic beverage. Essentially, it is a living colony of beneficial organisms that turn sugar into healthful acids and probiotics. The fermented tea has a slightly sweet and slightly tangy flavor, reminiscent of a shrub or vinegar based drink. The flavor varies widely by brand and homebrew method. Finished Kombucha tea can also be flavored in a process called secondary fermentation by adding juice, fruit or herbs. The fermentation process takes 7 - 12 days depending on temperature and the strength of the SCOBY. The SCOBY consumes over 90% of the sugar during fermentation, resulting in a low-sugar finished product. This process is similar to what would happen in sourdough bread

The Bruins went a perfect 5-0 in the round-robin to finish in first place in the six-team field and then clinched a spot in the final with a walk-off 6-5 win over the Shellbrook Rangers in the 1 vs. 2 Page playoff game Sunday evening. The championship contest between the two sides ended up being an 8-1 affair after five innings of play, but the Bruins knew that the Rangers would give them a tough task once again. “They were a really good team and they took it to us a little bit in the semi,” Ransome said. “We gave up too many stolen bases and had too many passed balls in that game, and the adjustments we made to correct that allowed us to have a better performance in the final. “The strength of our team was our hitting and once we got our bats going,
it was pretty tough to try and match us in the runs department with how good our pitching was.” The bronze medal went to the Cross Lake Wolves of Manitoba, as they dropped a 12-5 affair to the Rangers in the semifinal. The Wolves advanced to the semifinal game with an 8-4 win over the Irma Tigers from Alberta during a playoff game Sunday evening. A pair of Saskatchewan teams, the Warman Panthers and the Delisle Diamond Dogs, rounded out the six-team field. The Storm also went undefeated in the roundrobin in the girls’ division with a 6-0 record, though their toughest opponent would await them in the playoff round. They defeated the Lloydminster Liners in a thrilling 2-1 extra-inning affair Sunday to earn a spot in the
final, where they came out on top again by a score of 4-3 in yet another thriller between the top two teams at the tournament. “It was scoreless through seven innings in that first game we had and both teams played really well,” Herdman said. “The final was just as close and it really could have gone either way, but our girls found a way to dig deep and come away with the win like they did in the semifinal a day earlier. “We won all of our games, but I don’t think we really dominated the event. We had a lot of close games and things just went our way late. We did have a strong defence and really good pitching, which I think helped us out when we were in those really tight battles over the weekend.” The Unity Panthers came away with the bronze medal, as they were defeated 6-5 by the Liners in a thrilling semifinal. Another Saskatchewan team made it to the playoffs as the Alameda Super Novas finished in fourth place following a 12-3 loss to the Panthers. The Westman Magic from Brandon, Man., the host Battleford Bandits, the Manitoba Thunder of Winnipeg, the South Delta Invaders from British Columbia and the Sherwood Park Storm of Alberta made up the rest of the nine-team field. This weekend’s tournament marked the season final for all of the teams that came to the Battleford Flats Park.

minutes. He had started the season with the Victoria Royals of the Western Hockey League, with whom he had six points in 33 games in the 2015-16 campaign, but was after suiting up three times. After the BCHL season ended and the Bulldogs missed out on making the post-season, Anderson returned to the WHL as a member of the Everett Silvertips, who had added him to their protected player list after he was released by the Royals. He was held off the score sheet in seven regular season games and three playoff contests, but accumulated a combined 21 penalty minutes in those 10 games. When it comes to new
faces for the 2017-18 campaign, the North Stars have added forwards Tre Doyon from the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Lloydminster Bobcats, Josh Sielsky from the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s Neepawa Natives and Jacob Tibbatts from the Manitoba Midget Hockey League’s Yellowhead Chiefs, along with defenceman Michael Fradette from the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Kirkland Lake Gold Miners. They have also acquired goaltending prospect Cale Elder from the Kindersley Klippers, though it’s unclear yet if the Prince Albert Mintos netminder will make the opening night roster as both Taryn Kotchorek and Joel Grzybowski can both return.

The finish was a tough one for the Unity Panthers. However, to be able to come away with a bronze medal in the girls’ division at the Western Canadian U14 Softball Championship was still an impressive feat. “These girls never gave up,” Panthers coach Rene Feser said. “They gave their very best all season and they had a such a great attitude. “All 13 girls on our roster made our entire coaching staff proud with how they preformed.” The Panthers were three outs away from earning a spot in the championship game as they held a 5-2 lead over the Lloydminster Liners of Alberta heading into the bottom of the seventh inning of the semifinal Monday morning. That was when the Liners offence finally broke through as they scored
four unanswered runs to complete the comeback and end the Panthers’ season. “We were ahead most of the game, but it never felt like it as it was a back and forth battle right from the start,” Feser said. “Lloydminster is a great team, and they were able to come out on top today. “If you look at the top three teams in this tournament, I don’t think I’ve ever seen the competition be as close as it was in these last few games. In fact, the whole field from top to bottom was amazing and it was really close tournament right from the first game on Friday.” The Surrey Storm would edge the Liners 4-3 in the finals Monday afternoon. After starting the tournament with a 3-2 record, the Panthers needed a win in their last round-robin contest Sunday morning in order to clinch a spot in the playoffs and avoid a

tiebreaker game. They were able to do just that as they cruised to a 12-4 win over the Liners. “We talked to the girls in the morning and told them that if we win we move on and if we lose it’s a bit of a numbers game,” Feser said. “Against Lloydminster, the girls came out on fire and they kept that rolling right into the playoffs.” In the 3 vs. 4 Page playoff game, the Panthers found themselves in an all Saskatchewan matchup against the Alameda Super Novas. Once again, their offence was tough to stop as they once again scored a dozen runs in a 12-3 victory. “We played them in the provincials three weeks ago in Oxbow but that was a completely different game,” Feser said. “We were down five runs going into the seventh inning and we were able to come back to win that one. “The enthusiasm level of the girls was the big difference today (Sunday). They came out and hit everything that they saw, and they couldn’t be beat.” Although they weren’t the tournament hosts, the Panthers had a ton of support throughout the weekend and it often felt like they were the hometown side with the amount of fans from Unity that came to Battleford. “That was awesome,” Feser said. “It was really great to have everyone cheering us on from Unity this weekend and we have to tip our hats to everyone here in Battleford for how well the tournament went. “From this team, we have three girls that can come back and the other 10 players will be moving up to the bantam ranks. I think the expereince of being at the provincials will be huge for everyone on the team, and we’re really hoping to come back here once again.”

There were a number of twists and turns at the Western Canadian U14 Softball Championships over the weekend at Battlefords Flats, especially in the boys’ and girls’ semifinal games that took place Monday morning. The boys’ contest saw the Shellbrook Rangers offence explode for a dozen runs in a 12-5 win over the Cross Lake Wolves, while the Lloydminster Liners scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 6-5 comeback victory over the Unity Panthers. Northern Horizons Tour, showcase of Medstead talent By Corrina Murdoch Correspondent
The Northern Horizons Art Tour is a 14-year- old tradition of the local area. A number of artists had the opportunity to display their art for enthusiasts who travelled the route through the beautiful countryside on Aug. 5 and 6. One of the many prides of Medstead is the great artistic talent shown by residents of the area. Some originate from the region, and others come from afar. Each has unique backstory, tales of inspiration and motivation that carries forth into their work. An interesting story is that of Barb Janzen, proprietor of Buffalo Charlie, an artisanal soap-making company. Janzen has been making soaps for roughly 20 years. Her story starts with a family Christmas
edstead News tradition wherein only homemade gifts are exchanged. One fateful year, at the suggestion of her daughter, the creating of soap began. Coincidently, a friend of Janzen was organizing the tables at the annual Medstead craft fair. With this twist of fate, Janzen took out a half table with a small shoebox of soaps and sold out. She has been making and selling the product since then. The craftsperson cites the necessary synergy of science and art to facilitate the process. Each run of soap is created in three batches of ten pounds. The soap was originally made using tallow of deer, elk
$25,000 Closer to Goal
The Edam Community Recreation Centre Board is now $25,000 closer to its goal of renovating the arena portion of the rec centre and it is thanks to a donation from Richardson Pioneer Hamlin. Representing Richardson Pioneer Hamlin are Director of Operations Kim Corfield, Crop Inputs Manager Byron Watson and Area Marketing Representative Lynea Dupuis. The donation came from the Richardson Foundation. The Edam Rec Centre is the heart of the community which houses hockey, curling, 4-H and a fall cattle show, among other community activities. Edam Community Recreation Centre President Darcy Pool and board member Bryan Buitenhuis accepted the donation. Photo submitted by Brenda Pollard

and buffalo, which her husband farms. Recently, however, she has been making the switch to canola, a product which in fact originated in Saskatchewan. According to Janzen the process to make the soap only changed slightly. Janzen notes in commercial soap production there is a chemical which forces the binding of the individual components into soap form. She also notes that this chemical can be toxic, and is being found in ground water, soil and also is absorbed through the skin. With this in mind, Janzen keeps her products as natural and organic as possible. She cites the work as stress relieving and rewarding. Another fantastic testament to Medstead’s art culture is Aaron Johnson, a wood worker originally from the area. Johnson has made pieces showcased at the Village Hall in Medstead and in many homes around the village. Working primarily with second cuts of Jack Pine and Tamarack, Johnson characterizes his work as ‘rustic,’ noting that everything is self-designed. Starting woodwork casually in high school, the artist became serious about the work around 15 years ago. Johnson says that a lot of the inspiration for his passion for woodcraft comes from his Grandfather, a veteran of World War I, who built a wood cabin by hand. This cabin still stands today. The respect for the hard work that went into this original and pragmatic creation is what drove Johnson to this work.
Growing up near the forest, he would look to the forest and imagine what he could create. Today, Johnson proudly fashions original designs, including frames, lamps, tables and everything in between. Yet another example of Medstead’s great artistic talent is Dorothy Schmidt, who also showcased her art on the tour. Schmidt focuses largely on landscapes and has been featured in solo exhibitions across the province. Even more talent resident to the area, is showcased by Portraits and More, run by Lavonne Dyck. She has been drawing for more than 40 years using mainly black and white on a tan board, though also working with colored pencils and graphite. As a youth, Dyck loved drawing people. Moving into her college years, she took a trip to Jackson Square in New Orleans and was inspired by the sketching of people in the area. As an art teacher originally from South Dakota, the experience in New Orleans stayed with her. After gleaning the family farm of her husband in 2001, the pair moved to the Medstead area, where Dyck continued with her art. The passion of her work shines through, and, though she no longer does sittings, Portraits and More will take a photo and transform it into a sketched creation to capture anyone’s heart. From music to paintings, sketching to soap, woodwork to acting, Medstead is the home and heart of a plethora of artistic mediums and talented prac-

the 80th birthday party of Marion’s cousin Ron Buck in Meadow Lake. There was a lot of reminiscing, catching up and meeting cousins and old classmates during the afternoon. After a scrumptious lunch, the birthday cake was served and pictures taken. Contract bridge played at the Do Drop In July 31 found top score went to Robert Iverson, second was Vern Iverson. Aug. 1, duplicate bridge was played in Meota and top score went to Donna Scherman and Vern Iverson, second high were Jette and Terence DaSilva and third high were Mary Greenwald and Richard Groves. Remember to watch the skies on Aug. 12 and around that date for the brightest meteor showers we’ll ever see. It could be a ‘once in a lifetime’ event. On our travels from Carstairs to Leduc, Donna and I stopped in Wetaskiwin for lunch with Joyce Rowland and our New Zealand cousin Michele Willis. Michele’s husband Andrew comes over on Aug. 12, then they go to New York (been on their bucket list for some time), will attend a NASCAR event and do more visiting. They go home Sept. 1, after another Canadian experience.
Weather at the lake a ‘mixed bag’ By Lorna Pearson Correspondent
What a “mixed bag” our weather has been of late! Thunderstorms and patches of hail seem to be predominant. When Donna drove me back from Alberta we missed a hail storm by minutes. The driver of the car that was next into Innisfree behind us got out to examine their vehicle to see if it was dented. They would have stopped under an overpass but there was no room left. People on motorbikes don’t enjoy these storms either.
eota News The Big Valley Jamboree is on at Camrose and we know it poured there, causing a muddy mess. In the 20 or more years they have been operating, they have only had one or two years that were dry. Support for Wounded Warriors By Carol Deagnon Correspondent
Wounded Warriors passed by Maymont on July 27 about 5 o’clock. I would like to thank those who showed up to show their appreciation for their services. Lloydminster threw a party in July to raise funds to host the Wounded Warriors Weekend. This was the first time that the Wounded Warriors Weekend was held in Lloydminster. The tentative schedule of events included a visit to a local farm, a fishing and golf excursion at Loon Lake, a tribute walk for the public around Bud Miller lake and then a gala.
aymont News The TD Summer reading club will wind up Sept. 11at 1 p.m. Recycle your electronics. Maymont and surrounding areas can bring your old electronics to Maymont Village Office. The office is open Tuesday to Thursday 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Sorry for the headline in last week’s paper it was the Cemetery in Ruddell that had a new facelift, not Maymont.

GAMBLE: Gordon Gamble, 82, a lifelong resident of the Medstead area, passed away peacefully at the Wheatland Lodge in Leask on July 20, 2017. On August 1, a service for family and close friends was held at the Medstead Lutheran Cemetery. This was followed by a celebration of life held at the Medstead Community Center. The service was officiated by Delores Beaulac accompanied by the fiddle music of John Roth. Gordon was survived by his immediate family – brothers Dick, Dave, John (Grace), and Keith (Linda) and sister Genevieve (Russel) Works. From his extended family, he is survived by his step children Kathy (Don) Benson, Helen (Sid) Poole, Veronica (Rick) Eyberson and Tom (Philomen) Harty. Gordon was predeceased by his parents, brother Edward, his wife Myrna, stepsons Leo, Frank and Paul Harty and sisters-in-law Lillian and Patti. Gordon was born at Forest Bank, Saskatchewan, to Wendell and Ellen Gamble on December 15, 1934. He was a hard man to catch, and at age 45 married Myrna Harty, after which he continued to live and work on the family farm. Gordon was a quiet man who became well known for some of his pastimes. Many of his passions included farming, sawing on mills (including his own), welding, and creating a variety of tools. Some of the best garden tools ever designed came from Gordon’s shop. Many will remember Gordon saying, “I think I could make one of those.” In the evenings, Gordon would be often found playing his fiddle. Gordon took pride in having a three year supply of firewood, perfectly stacked, and ready for winter. In the summer, Gordon loved fishing, camping and working in his vegetable garden. Gordon’s family would like to thank the staff and management of Rose Gill Lodge at Rabbit Lake and the Wheatland Lodge at Leask for the care given to Gordon during his stay there. The Gamble and Harty families would also like to thank Mark and staff at the Beau “Lac” Funeral Home of Spiritwood. Thank you to Delores Beaulac who led the internment and celebration of life. Her heartfelt stories of both Gordon and Myrna Gamble will be cherished. The family would also like to express their gratitude to the Medstead High School who helped prepare the hall and the wonderful lunch which was provided by Medstead Lutheran Ladies. Thank you to the Medstead community for their donations and support as well as those who contributed to the charities of their choice. Family and friends wishing to send online condolences are welcome to visit www.beaulacfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Beau “Lac” Funeral Home, Mark Muir, Funeral Director, Spiritwood (306-883-3500). __________________________________________________

Zelda went to a country school near Kelvington, Sask. But had to quit after grade 8 and went to work. She did housework and milking cows for the neighbours and relatives, then when she was old enough she got a job at the Yorkton and Brandon airports during the war. Came home then answered an ad for a housekeeper in the Landis area. After a time she married Carl Schmidt and had 2 children. She worked real hard on the farm and after Carl passed away she worked as a cleaning lady for a motel in North Battleford. From here she moved to Wilkie and took up cooking in the M and A cafe. She also cooked for 3 different construction companies, after retiring from them she cooked and kept house for a friend south of Landis. In 1990 she bought a house in Landis and enjoyed her retirement until 2015 when she moved into Poplar Court lodge in Wilkie and enjoyed a year and 3 months then passed away peacefully in her sleep from total kidney failure. Zelda will be missed by her family and her many friends. After Glow I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done. I’d like to leave an echo Whispering softly down the ways. Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. I’d like the tears of those who grieve, To dry before the sun Of happy memorie, I leave behind When all is said and done. __________________________________________________

OBITUARIES FRANSOO: Cyril Fransoo passed away peacefully with family July 16, 2017. He will forever be loved and remembered by his wife of 59 years, Madeleine Fransoo and sons Jerome (Heather), Gerard (Alison), Michael (Colais) and Gilles (Marti) and families. Funeral Service was held at St. Joseph Parish July 21, 2017 with Father Nestor Gregoire officiating along with Father Lavoie and Father Afanagide. My grandpa was born on a snowy night on February 17, 1935, and as he would have you know that is the same year that Elvis Presley was born. The story goes that his father spent that night sleeping in the back of a wagon outside of the hospital and woke up covered in 6 inches of snow. After a few days in the hospital, baby Cyril was brought back to the farm, where he would spend the next 62 years in the same yard. Over the next 15 years Cyril was joined on the farm by his 4 siblings, Nestor, Anne-Marie, Elizabeth and Joe. If my grandpa were telling the story of his birth, he would also tell you the legal land descriptions of every quarter section they passed on the way home, an ability he was very proud to display. As a young boy, my grandpa attended McMillan School. As a testament to his work ethics and sharp intellect, school came easily to Cyril. But young Cyril was also a trickster. In addition to scheming to lock out his teacher from the school and putting grasshoppers in the air intakes, he built skiis and a rope out of bail twine and would ski behind a horse and sleigh to school along with his brother Nestor. When his father learnt that he was skiing to school and tried to stop them, my grandpa would hide the skiis down the road so that he could continue on. In grade 9 his mother fell ill and Cyril stayed home to help with his younger siblings. When his mom was out of the hospital, Cyril decided that he was done with school and that he wanted to work on the farm with his dad, despite his teacher trying to persuade him continue on. Reflecting back on his decision to leave school my grandpa said that “if you are good in mathematics you’ll be fine without school, but if you’re poor in mathematics you better stay school”. Over the next number of years Cyril worked on the farm from spring to fall and worked odd jobs in the winter, including constructing the North Battleford post office and assembling John Deere Combines. One day while unloading a combine he got one of his fingers crushed, this would be one of three times in his life that he nearly lost a digit while on the job that I am aware of. Then in 1958 at a dance in Lloydminster, Cyril met his sweetheart, Madeleine Ayotte. Cyril fell head over heels for my grandma and married her on July 10, 1958. On his way to the ceremony with his brother Joe by his side, Cyril got pulled over by the police. Not having the lead foot that his boys have, I assume he was in a rush to spend the next 59 years with the love of his life. Fortunately, he didn’t get a ticket, although the officer held them for a little longer than necessary, and the wedding went off without a hitch and Cyril and Madeleine took off to spend their three-day honeymoon in Waskesiu. Over the next six decades Cyril was devoted to my grandma whom he referred to as his sweetheart. Once they were married it was time for Cyril to have his own house on the farm. His dad gave him a load of barley as a wedding gift, and being the entrepreneur that grandpa was, he used this to trade for lumber that he would use to build their first home. Over the next 9 years my grandpa and grandma would welcome 4 sons into their lives. First Jerome and Gerard, then came Michael in 1968 and a year and four days later, Gilles. Grandpa was a man who cared deeply about his family. Grandma, or Madeleine, - “his sweetheart” – was his number one teammate. The kind hearted and humble man that he was, he would always tell us that without Madeleine, he would not have achieved the things he did in life. In his precise and analytical words, he said that she deserved credit for “over 50%” of their achievements! He quipped not too long ago: he “always went to Madeleine for advice…. However sometimes he didn’t follow it…. But, that was usually a mistake!” They were a superb team, always having each other’s back right up until the day he peacefully passed. A great example of love, devotion, and commitment for us all to follow. His boys were very important to him as well. Cyril and Madeleine raised them to be hard working, entrepreneurial, kind-hearted, and well-intent. Beyond this, he mixed in much time for fun. From the early days, when the boys were young Cyril and Madeleine would travel with them through the Rocky Mountains to Vancouver Island to the later days where they spent around 10 consecutive years attending the Stampede in Calgary to the more recent years where his boys and their wives would visit him and Grandma in Yuma for some winter time sun; he mixed in a good dose of family fun in between farming! He always made sure he boys and their families were taken care of, whether it was a load of gravel for their farm, or agronomic and financial advice for their businesses or providing supporting words of wisdom and care during the many hardships life always presents. He was extremely proud of who his boys evolved to be. He was especially proud that all of his boys in-the-end continue to farm the land that he and his father first cultivated. Simply put, he was a proud father and he was always there for his boys. In fact, he was a model father. The accepting person that he was, he accepted into his family, with open arms, all of his daughter’s in-law. He too was very proud of them; he cherished them. He was very proud of the supports they provided to the farm and business through-out the years; to the dinners that they brought out to the field for those infamous tailgate suppers to the motherhood they provided to his many grandchildren while his sons were planting or harvesting the crops. On countless occasions would he comments on how lucky he was to have such great daughter in-laws who shared many values with him (work ethic, family values, kindness etc.) and on how great of mothers his daughter’s in-law were. And his daughter-in-law’s reciprocated this love and respect for Grandpa as evidenced by their constant care and support for him through-out the years, and especially through-out his times of sickness. They were there right until his last breathe along-side his boys and his sweetheart. As many of his coffee-shop, or Yuma friends, or other family members would know, he was proud of every single one of his 23 grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was very proud of their athletic achievements (to the many hockey, football, volleyball, swimming, boxing, and other sports players in the room); he was proud of the musical achievements (to the violinists, saxophone players and guitarists!); he was proud of their academic achievements (to the lawyers, business, agriculture, and health students, teachers, economists, and policy-makers), and lastly he was proud of his farmers and farmers-to-be. He was proud because it was he and his “sweethearts” influence that we so instrumental in the successes of his many grandchildren. He took pride in the opportunity that he provided to his grandchildren. He took pride in seeing his strong, respectful values shine through his grandchildren. In his own words, it was he and his sweethearts that deserves “more than 50% of the credit” … MUCH more than 50%... for the opportunities and successes that his grandchildren have had a life. To that we say, thank-you Grandpa. Beyond his immediate family, he was also a very strong and caring family man. He was proud of his whole extended family and more importantly he was proud to call them, his. He visited with them often, whether it was trips in his early days up to the “Peace River region”, or the many visits in the sun in Yuma, or the many visits locally around North Battleford and the lake, or the fun times working side-by-side and together, he loved the time he spent with you. I know this because of the many stories he shared with us; he was always positive, proud, and grateful to have the “team” he had on his side. In addition to being devoted to his family and friends, Grandpa was a lifelong businessman. His entrepreneurial spirit was on display throughout his whole life and was something that he excelled at. Grandpa began his entrepreneurial journey in a rather unique way. After getting married he bought a fridge and stove from Sears on credit. At that same time, he attempted to get money from banks to start a herd of cattle, but every bank turned his away. So Cyril loaded up the fridge and stove and headed down to Niagara Finance where he borrows against the appliances once again. This initial loan lead to Grandpa opening a dairy which he operated until 1973. Although he was not in love with cows, Grandpa was always willing to put in hard work if he saw an opportunity. At the same time Grandpa was buying farm land and growing his grain operation, which his sons continue on to this day. Grandpa was a farmer to his core and even had a license plate on the front of his Mercedez that said “born 2 farm”. One day while driving a case one way, Grandma came out to tell Grandpa that a real estate agent had called to see if Grandpa wanted to buy a º just west of where ILTA Grain currently operates along highway 4. By 3 o’clock that afternoon grandpa had got a mortgage at BMO, bought the land and had the transfer executed. Today we call that a º “Omillan’s”. This is just one example of Grandpa jumping on an opportunity when it presented itself. Beyond the farm, Grandpa sought to become further involved in the grain handling business. In 1979 he planted his first crop of lentils and would eventually become a special crop agent for All State Grain. Grandpa saw great opportunity in the special crop business and as it developed he decided to open a cleaning facility. In 1987 Parkland Pulse was opened and over the next 25 years the business ballooned in size within the province and around the world. When the business was solid in 2012, the Leader Post called Cyril a “pioneer in the Western Canadian special crop industry”, a very fitting description. Overall this was a chapter of Grandpa’s life that he took great pride in. randpa also passed on his entrepreneurial spirit to his children and grandchildren. Grandpa knew that there is no greater freedom than working for yourself, and this is a belief that he certainly impressed upon his sons and their children. And lastly, Grandpa was a community man, and a very social person. Beyond taking good care of his family, he saw it as his duty to make the world around their bubble a better place. Grandpa provided employment opportunities for many through his entrepreneurialism. He was a fair man who treated many of his employees just like family; he viewed their success as his success. Further to this, Grandpa was involved in a long-list of community groups throughout his days. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus; he was on many agricultural boards (for example he was the President of the Battleford Milk Producers and the Chairman of the local wheat pool committee, to name a few); he was involved in different political campaigns as a candidate and as a campaign manager; and he was a trustee for the St. Joseph Church throughout his life. Beyond being on formal committees and boards, Grandpa’s smile, kindness, and outgoing personality added to the community around him. He was well known at the local coffee shops in North Battleford and Yuma, Arizona as a frequenter. Anytime that I was with him he always smiled at people and people always invited him to sit down with them for breakfast. His smile and positivity was contagious. This will be missed by not only his family, but by his many friends in near and far away places. Grandpa was also keen on passing wisdom, often by way of saying little sayings. For example, he firmly believed that there were two types of people in this world, leaders and followers, the question being which one do you want to be? Cyril certainly chose to be a leader and engrained that into his sons and grandchildren. He would also say that to many good men rust out and don’t wear out, or that too many good men die in bed. The lesson being, don’t be lazy work hard, something that Cyril certainly portrayed. But above all, Grandpa was an advocate, an advocate for his community, for his friends and most of all for his family. Grandpa was proud of everyone in his life that he was always telling people about their accomplishments and what they were doing in their lives. IF I ever told grandpa something good that happened in my life, he always took such pride that he immediately shared it with whoever was around. What grandpa wanted more than anything was to see his sons and grandchildren be successful in whatever they were doing. And that is perhaps grandpa’s greatest legacy. The people he left behind and their accomplishments and aspirations, and the feeling of pride that he instilled in all of them. Pride in a job well done, and a life. A special thank you to Kinght of Columbus 3rd and 4th Degree Honour Guards and all who attended or sent good wishes and intentions for Cyril’s Celebration of Life service. Thank you to Trevor Watts and staff at Eternal Memories for their support and professionalism. Thank you to Dr. Reed and staff at St.Paul’s Hospital (Dialysis Unit). Senior men’s provincials in Unity this weekend By Sherri Solomko Correspondent
What! Mid August already, how is that even possible folks? I hope this summer you’ve been able to manage the heat, or the stormy weather the heat brews up. What’s up for ball in Unity? If you want to watch some terrific baseball action live, then head on down to the Cardinals diamond this weekend as Senior Men’s baseball provincials are taking place in Unity this weekend and include our home host team, the Unity Cardinals. Great baseball will be taking place at this event as the eight teams competing are all vying to close out their season with a provincial championship. Last weekend it was the U14 softball’s turn to hit the diamonds in the Battlefords competing as Team Sask. 1 in their Western Canadian championships. This weekend, the U16 girls are in Brandon competing at their Western Canadian
nity News event. Next weekend, the UK Royals will head to Irma, Alta., to compete at the U21 Western Canadian event, although sadly disappointing that only ywo Sask. teams, one Alberta and one Manitoba team chose to compete for this event. Next weekend will also see five Unity players off to Kamloops, B.C., to compete for their Midget AA Western Canadian baseball championship. I will do my best to keep you all posted on the outcomes of these teams’ appearance as Team Saskatchewan at their respective Western Canadian events. Unity Credit Union Aquatic Centre only has a couple weeks left of swim season. Considering the issues that delayed opening of the pool this summer, you will want to use every opportunity to enjoy
the pool for the remainder of the summer. Up next at the Unity golf club is the seniors open. Aug. 13 is the fourman scramble, and Aug. 27 is the members open, while continuing to play host to men’s and ladies’ nights during the week. You can also opt to take in the driving range, putting place, nin-hole grass greens or the clubhouse. Follow the UCG on Facebook to get the latest updates so you can know before you go. The Unity Farmer’s Market continues to be a terrific unique shopping opportunity hosted in Unity each Friday from 1-4 p.m. at the Unity Legion Hall in downtown Unity. Another round of vehicle thefts have hit Unity and other surrounding towns so this is yet another reminder to take your keys out of your vehicle or protect your property with additional lighting, neighborhood watches or even an alarm system. Criminals don’t like attention so let’s make sure our own properties and the properties of
Unity players from left to right, Skylar Mackie, Dillon Poschenreider, Tanner Huber, Damien Lantz and Dylan Bosch, were part of the Provincial Midget AA Northwest Prairie Pirates baseball team who captured the provincial title that qualified them to advance as Team Saskatchewan to compete at Western Canadian Midget baseball championships Aug 17-20 in Kamploops, B.C. our neighbors gets lots of attention to help prevent Unity from being a desirable place to steal from. Coffee row has migrated to other spaces with the Co-op now renovating to accommodate their new liquor section, meaning the coffee area there is no
longer. However, these fine folks are fortunate to have several other locations to enjoy and meet at. Regardless of the meeting location, “rowers” continue to review the weather, the Riders, the Jays as well as local sports teams and local success stories. And, it
never matters which side of the topic table their opinion lies, there is always plenty of laughter and recreational ribbing amongst participants. So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next time …
Native American Church holds annual conference By Floyd Favel The Native American Church of Canada (NACC) held their annual conference July 28-30 on the Red Pheasant First Nation, 50 km south of Battleford. The conference was hosted by the Benson and Daniels family members and conference attendees came from as far away as Columbia, Montana and Arizona, and from Montreal, Quebec. The event was held at the Glen Kiskotagan Hall in Red Pheasant, where
dinners were held as well as the election of new officers to the church. The elected church officers were previous leaders Kelly Daniels and Lux Benson Sr., as president and vice-president and Reanna Daniels once again chosen by acclamation as secretary. Lily Rose Favel from Poundmaker was newly welcomed to the leadership in her role as treasurer. The prayer meetings were held for three nights inside tipis at the Daniels and Benson ceremonial grounds. “This is the largest
church conference we ever hosted. The purpose was to bring people together in the spirit of co-operation and working together,” stated President Kelly Daniels, who is also a well-known recording artists, having won numerous times at the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards, including nominations in the Native Church Category at the Native American Music Awards. The NACC was organized in 1954 as a nonprofit church organization, incorporated provincially.

Start searching for long lost treasure today Ed, my old neighbour in Saskatchewan, has been searching for a part for his vintage grain truck, and he says that it is like trying to find a hidden treasure. Every year as harvest begins to appear down the road, Ed seeks to get Old Mack ready for one more season of grain hauling. So far, my old neighbour has been able to coax his old grain truck through another season of harvest. This year he may have to retire Old Mack if he cannot treasure hunt a new part for his truck. I told Ed that I should be good at being a treasure hunter because I have had a lot of practice in hunting a couple of
artifacts of my own, my glasses and keys to be precise. My old neighbour told me he had borrowed a book from his son-in-law in Edmonton. The book is by Charles A. Miller, and called The Golden Mountains. The book is about hunting for treasure, mostly lost gold in British Columbia. Ed has been bitten with gold fever, but he wants me to do the searching for the lost gold, as he will give me directions from his book. He wants me to head to a village named Clinton, half way between Prince George and Vancouver. Clinton is two hours and forty-six minutes away
eighbourly Advice According to Ed
By Raymond Maher www.accordingtoed.com
revraymaher@accesscomm.ca from Chilliwack if I drive non-stop. Then I am to search along Scott or Scottie Creek for hidden gold bars worth $15,000. In 1889, an outlaw, Jack Rowland, robbed a stagecoach. He was captured after a time and sent to prison. It is rumoured that the gold bars he stole were
never found and that they were supposedly hidden along the creek in the area of his cabin near Clinton. Now Ed thinks that I should use my time and my gas to go to Clinton and find those gold bars that no one else has found in 118 years. My excuse to Ed was that, right now, the Ashcroft and Clinton areas
are threatened by forest fires. I told Ed to keep treasure hunting his tested and preferred way by buying his lottery tickets right at home in Melville. Many folks have treasured gold so much that they were willing to leave where they were, and what they had, to go and search for gold sometimes thousands of miles away. It seems many folks want to become rich and finding gold could make them so. People buy lottery tickets because they want to become rich or richer. People treasure many things like wealth, possessions, families, friends, health, jobs, hobbies, cell phones, etc.
They also cherish things that they believe are treasures but are trash in the long run. It is easy for folks to treasure doing drugs, getting drunk, violence, crime, pornography, etc. and eventually finding their lives trashed because of them. We cannot always see the difference between what is a treasure and what is trash. The Bible is clear that whatever we treasure that is where our heart will be. As Christians, faith in Jesus Christ is to be our greatest treasure. Jesus is the most valuable treasure that we are to hold as far above all other of our treasures.
