Battleford parade attracts big crowd Josh Greschner Staff Reporter

Before going out with a bang at the fireworks display last Friday, Battleford residents gathered along Main Street to watch the parade.

This year’s parade featured 10 floats and 53 total entries, which is up from last year.

Parade participation increased this year, says Jordan Schectel, parks and recreation superintendent for the Town of Battleford, possibly due to moving the parade closer to Territorial Days, in which a number of Battleford residents feature their floats.

Schectel told the Regional Optimist this week a lot of people “didn’t want to do two floats in the

same year.”

Schectel said he appreciated the Canada 150 theme.

Parade winners: Bruce Sack finished first in the Auto AntiqueClassic category, while the Western Development Museum’s 1929 Buick and 1928 Model A finished first and second in the Auto-Antique category.

If spectators gathered along Main Street for the Battleford Parade looked up, they’d see the roof of the post office was darker than it has been in the past.

Cassandra Germsheid said painting the Check Your roof and window frames in time for the Mailbox parade was a priority for them as new owners of the building and partner Jesse Crozier was able to complete the roof with barely an hour to spare before the parade. Dear Editor Have you ever experienced that sinking feeling and subsequent panic when out in public and far from home you misplace something significant – your keys, a wallet, maybe a smart phone? My wife and I experienced this on a recent visit to North Battleford. To make matters worse, we didn’t even realize that her wallet was missing until we had arrived in Saskatoon several hours after a brief stop at the Co-op.

My reason for writing is to express our gratitude to the staff at this location who found, in their parking lot, a wallet with cash, major credit and debit cards, as well as other valuables. Not only did they find it and pick it up, they brought it inside and went to great lengths to contact us and put our minds at ease. In a world that too often focuses on human failings, our brief moment of carelessness served as a simple reminder that there are good people out there, doing great things, every day. I want to thank the Co-op staff for restoring our faith in people and for leaving us with a positive impression of a community we’ve visited only once (twice if you include the trip back to get the wallet) and will surely see again.

Thirteen years interviewing Brad Wall I think it was the summer or fall of 2004 when I first met Brad Wall, while working as the political reporter for the Battlefords News-Optimist.

He had recently become the leader of the Saskatchewan Party, having succeeded Elwin Hermanson, possibly one of the least-exciting political leaders this province had produced.

Wall was young, still in his 30s, and he had just recently put out a policy paper with a number of points on how he wanted to reform Saskatchewan.

I met him in the small, little-used North Battleford Cameron McIntosh Airport terminal.

He had flown in on one of those executive airplanes that were used to ferry MLAs from Regina to far-flung ridings. (Those planes were disposed of in the last provincial budget).

We sat and talked, probably for half an hour, and I got a really good

Association 2012 Columnist of the Year picture of him, which happens to still be floating around my office somewhere, in print form. It was probably the best politician portrait I’ve taken yet.

I don’t remember if it was on this day or later that fall, but he spoke to a group of party faithful in North Battleford. I still remember a key point in his speech – the story of the white pickup.

Wall talked about how a businessperson he knew at home kept getting a new white pickup of the same make and model every year or two. He’d like to get something differ-

ent, but couldn’t. Why? Because if the customers of his business knew he could afford something new and swanky, they might punish him by not going to his business because he was obviously getting too far ahead. And that, in a nutshell, waswhat was wrong with the Saskatchewan attitude at the time. We collectively frowned on success.

I’ve since retold that white pickup story several times, because he was absolutely right.

After he was done, I got to have a one-on-one chat with him that probably lasted half an hour or

The important thing is to get started. We have many volunteer placement programs; delivering meals on wheels, volunteer visiting, hospital greeter and unit volunteers, peer navigation, palliative care, clinics, training for peer leaders, helping with en-

It must have made an impression, because since then, I have been fortunate enough to have one-on-one discussions with him, on average once a year or so, discussing things at much greater depth that everyone else got from the typical press conference. That might have been because the rest of the news media had nearly daily access to the premier, while I only spoke to him once or twice a year. I wouldn’t call very often, but he would usually return my calls. Whatever the reason, he made time for me in a way that I would have never expected from other politicians in his position.

For instance, when he was on one of his annual lobbying efforts to Washington, fighting for the Keystone XL project, I got a 15-minute call from Premier Wall while he was in the halls of Congress, about to go into a Senate committee meeting. That was a big deal for me, and

for Pipeline News.

Another time I ended up talking to him via cell phone from my SUV in the Regina Costco parking lot. Beyond my questions for the paper, I told him about the housing shortage in Estevan coming to a crisis point, and stories I had heard of people sleeping in cars in parking lots. He was genuinely concerned, something I rarely heard, in that manner, from a politician.

Brad Wall is, and has been, a politician that one might only come across once in a generation. He is humble, yet strong and forceful when needed.

He’s a gifted speaker beyond anyone I’ve ever seen. Recently I watched another political leader and found myself comparing him to Wall. There was no comparison.

I don’t think he tripped over his ego like many other politicians do daily.

He could charm a room and an individual, and often did both.

To my knowledge, he never did move to Regina, instead spending nearly five hours in the passenger seat of a vehicle nearly every day between Swift Current and Regina, with a driver handling the wheel while he worked the phone. I’ve done several interviews over the phone with him while he was on this incredibly long daily commute.

He got it, and Saskatchewan people knew it. It’s no surprise that the last few elections, the Saskatchewan Party, led

by Wall, walked away with massive majorities in seats and popular vote.

He’s not gone yet, but Brad Wall will be sorely missed when he is. I just wonder if he’s going to spend the next few years learning French, and if he’ll take a run at the federal stage at some point down the road.

Cut Knife meeting to discuss pharmacy issue Josh Greschner Staff Reporter

A recent decision by a Prairie North Health Region evaluation committee could result in trouble for the Cut Knife pharmacy.

In order to deliver medication services to long term care facilities, the PNHR relies on contracted, private pharmacy service providers, VicePresident Finance and Operations Derek Miller told the Regional Optimist Tuesday. Every five years, the PNHR re-evaluates the contracts and goes to market to find they what the PNHR considers the best agreements.

The process begins with a request for proposals, which is posted on the government website for

public procurement, SaskTenders. Winter of 2017 is when the evaluation committee began reviewing the proposals for packaging and distribution of daily prescription drugs to longterm care facilities.

Dana Karlson owns pharmacies in Cut Knife and Turtleford, towns that each have a long-term care facility. Cut Knife Pharmacy provides medication to the Cut Knife Health Complex, while the Turtleford location provides medication to the Riverside Health Complex and the Lady Minto Health Care Centre in Edam.

Karlson, along with other pharmacies in the area, submitted proposals in hopes of earning the contract.

Miller said the evalu-

ation committee, which determines who earns the contract, consisted of “representation from across the health region,” such as facility managers, pharmacy, and procurement experts.

The committee’s criteria for considering proposals were professional resident care services, medication distribution, accessibility, participation in stewardship of medications, and resident costs.

To fulfill the medication distribution criteria, Karlson said he offered to buy machines that distribute pills in Cut Knife and Turtleford. Karlson said he also offered to increase clinical services by having “an extra pharmacist come out to do more clinical services and service every day.”

“I was pretty confident I was going to keep it [the contract].”

Karlson said he found out at the end of July that he didn’t get the contract.

The winning bid for the medication providers of the long-term care homes in Cut Knife and Edam was Battleford Drug Mart, while Family Pharmacy in Lloydminster will supply Turtleford. Karlson’s contract with PNHR ends in October.

Karlson said losing the contracts would affect the Cut Knife pharmacy.

“You need a certain volume to pay your bills, so this is going to affect that, which could affect the pharmacy being there, which could affect the hours,” Karlson said.

Whether or not the Cut

Knife pharmacy will still be profitable after the contract ends, Karlson said, “We’ll have to wait and see.”

A Facebook post by the Cut Knife pharmacy has attracted social media attention. According to the post, there are petitions at the Cut Knife and Turtleford pharmacies to keep the local pharmacies as the medication providers to long-term care facilities in the area.

The Town of Cut Knife issued a statement on Aug. 15.

“We are very concerned about the awarding of the contract to supply the prescription needs of the patients in the long-term health care facility in Cut Knife to a non-local pharmacy,” the statement says.

The statement offers evaluations of each of the five criteria, and concludes “in summary, we as the community do not feel that true consultation has been done.”

Karlson said the rationale for awarding the contract to pharmacies outside Cut Knife and Turtleford has been unclear to him.

Miller said he couldn’t say what criteria influenced the committee’s decision.

“I can’t really comment. I know you’re talking about the one centre [Cut Knife] in particular and I don’t think I’m in a position to comment on the results of the evaluation for that particular proposal.”

In spite of the hot weather and horse smell, or maybe because of those things, attendance was up at this year’s Those Were the Days compared to last year.

While the actual attendance number has yet to be determined, Western Development Museum Manager Joyce Smith estimates over 2,000 people attended the Aug. 12-13 event.

Smith said Those Were the Days this year was “terrific” and the weather was great. Temperatures hovered around

Much was happening during Those Were the Days. Saturday began with free flapjacks and coffee for those who paid admission, and Heritage Village interpreters and staff informed and entertained the public.

The main museum building housing a number of the museum’s artifacts, while a number of historic buildings were open to the public, including those in the town site and churches.

To prevent patrons from having to walk the length of the outdoor museum, antique cars, a fire truck and a horse-pulled

wagon drove attendees around the site. The museum’s 1929 Buick won Best Antique at Battleford’s parade last Friday.

In the main building there was food and live music. Outside, there were bouncy castles, a dog show, a petting zoo, a demonstration of miniature horses, and historical activities such as rope making, nail pounding and pumping water.

Back then, you had to sweat in order to cool off.

“You couldn’t just turn on the tap,” Smith said.

A barbeque show down showed off the skills of chefs in the

area, and attendees had a chance to judge a chili cook-off for a dollar.

Cut Knife meeting to discuss pharmacy issue

From Friday morning to Monday morning, Battlefords RCMP received 198 calls.

Friday saw a hit and run, an assault, a vehicle collision on the way to Cochin, and two impaired driving charges later that evening.

There were a number of mischief calls and calls of suspicious people, along

with calls for smashed windows, slashed tires and vehicles being rummaged through.

The weekend rounded out on Sunday with a botched break and enter where the suspect was located in an alley and swung a knife at police. The suspect was charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose,

assault on a police officer with a weapon, breaking and entering with intent, and possession of property obtained by crime. Not one was injured and the suspect was arrested.

Also on Sunday, were two vehicle thefts, both of which were from unlocked vehicles and with keys inside the vehicle. Both thefts are under investigation.

Miller said the resident’s cost criteria, the cost of pills that residents of long-term care facilities pay, was not a significant factor in the decision.

“Typically in Saskatchewan the costs for medication in this kind of environment are relatively stable, and similar across all bids, so that was not a significant factor at all in the determinations. But it was included as an evaluation criteria because we

wanted to ensure that there were no anomalies in terms of costs that would fall onto our residents.”

Karlson said centralization was his “first instinct,” but Prairie North “just gave it [the contract] to other competitors, which is a different thing.”

Karlson said he’s unsatisfied with PNHR’s communication.

“I got a couple calls and I got an interview, other than that you’re pretty much shut out. They don’t really tell you anything.”

Miller said the request for proposal process “includes the means to request a debrief for each of the bidders in the process and so that is there as a way for unsuccessful bidders to request feedback.”

A town hall meeting will be held Monday, Aug. 21, featuring members of Cut Knife town council

and Karlson. According to the Town’s statement, the town hall meeting is intended to “bring to the forefront concerns of the local citizenship.”

Miller said PNHR is “considering the request” to attend, although he said the debrief is “the preferred means by which issues are raised about how the process was conducted or about specific proposals.”

Miller said the request for proposal process is bound by the New West Partnership Agreement, and he said he believed PNHR “met those standards for procurement in a fair and transparent way.”

The New West Partnership is a 2010 agreement between Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba aimed at lowering interprovincial trade barriers.

Last weekend for competitive ball action

This is the last weekend Unity ball teams and Unity players are competing in August for their respective Western Canadian ball events. Previously the U14 Panthers and U16 Panthers competed at their events with results not available until the next issue. The Cardinals wrapped up their provincial ball event hosted in Unity as well. With that being said, it appears that’s a wrap for ball season for 2017. How successful and enjoyable it was.

Local 4-H participant returns from Ottawa summit

4-H, Cody Somers says, is about more than cows and cookies.

Somers has returned from a recent 4-H summit in Ottawa.

The summit, featuring workshops and keynote speakers, went from July 11-14 and hosted participants from a number of countries.

4-H is a worldwide organization with over seven million participants from over 70 countries. The program allows for youth to engage in activities such as raising livestock, cooking, photography, archery,

paintballing and volunteering.

Each day of the summit concentrated on one of 4-H’s four pillars: Community Engagement and Communications, Science and Technology, the Environment and Healthy Living, and Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security.

Somers said his favourite part of the summit was meeting people from different countries and seeing how they interpret 4-H differently. South Africa’s 4-H program is more directed toward agriculture, and participants grow crops and sell them.

Somers said he also met people from Jamaica and

Kosovo at the summit. The next summit is scheduled for 2020.

This year is Cody’s fourth in 4-H, and he started when he was 12. 4-H has helped his self-confidence and communication skills, Somers says, because every year, public speaking is part of his club. He added 4-H teaches skills that can only be taught outside the classroom.

Somers said he thinks he’ll continue with 4-H until he meets the maximum age requirement, which is 24.

“It’s fun,” Somers says. “We have a good group of kids.”

Library Fun Day to celebrate the close of summer

The energy of summer still abounds in the air.

Children play and people of the village continue to enjoy bonfires and gardening and all the joys the season brings. In spite of the long days and short nights, the start of the school year is sneaking up on Medstead at an ever increasing rate.

In the spirit of celebrating the delights and the freedoms of summer vacation, the Medstead Library is putting on its annual Fun Day, to run Aug. 24 from noon to 2 pm. The day is to boast a variety of activi-

Children will have the chance to play and craft, enjoying the books and the cool indoors while endeavoring outwards to the craft table and the hot dog roast. There are to be draws for prizes for all age groups, including preschool, school age, teen

and adult. All prizes are generously donated by the dedicated members of the library board.

A guided craft, which is going to be facilitated by local parent and board

member, Heather Pederson, is going to be one of the hands-on highlights of the day. Nissa Shiell will be doing the reading and musical portion of the afternoon, giving the children and adults alike a chance to liven their day with song. The hot dogs and refreshments are being taken care of by Brenna Knapman, a friendly face for all attendees to see.

Naturally, the other members of the library board contribute in various ways, behind the scenes, making sure the event runs smoothly. Under the purview of Medstead librarian, Chandra Pederson, the Fun Day was a thriv-

ing success last year, and is sure to carry forward the tradition.

Having a library as a part of our village is a great privilege, something which is made possible by the dedication of its board members, but also by all those who use its services.

There have been many changes to the library system during the year of 2017, from the ups and downs of funding to the village’s rally cries in support of this critical local institution. It has been a great testament to just how vital the library is, and what a gift it is to have it as a part of the town.

Balloons and decorations, crafts and music will

tie up the season for both children and adults, many of whom will have the chance to walk away with a prize. No matter the results of the draws, however, everyone will get to take home a craft and lasting memories.

Events such as the annual Fun Day are a major reason the community is so grateful and a participant in this necessary institution.

Undoubtedly, just like 2016 and the year before, there will be a thriving turnout to the Fun Day event on the 24th. The occasion will give the people of Medstead yet another chance to come together over the joys of reading and the spirit of community.

Pirates prepared for Western Canadians

“We’ve had a lot of exhibition games against a number of senior teams since we won in Swift Current and that’s really helped us to get that competitive edge back,” Cubbon said.

“You really don’t know

what you are going to face at the Westerns until you get there, but we know they are going to be the best teams from Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba, so the teams from the senior leagues are a good warm up for us as the pitching we have been facing is really good.”

The Pirates had a challenging regular season in the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League. They finished the campaign with an

8-22 record as they dealt with a number of injuries.

“After we had our games in North Battleford in June, a number of our pitchers got hurt and we ended up going on a long losing streak,” Cubbon said. “Once we got them back, we went on to win four of our last six games before the provincials.

“That changed the whole complexion of our team, especially when we got our best pitcher Jaydon

Gartner back. In midget baseball, you need to have strong pitching especially with the pitch counts that you have to work around at big tournaments.”

In addition to having a healthy pitching staff, a dominant offence and stellar defence were the key factors for the Pirates championship performance at the provincials in Swift Current.

Over the course of the tournament, which took place on July 22 and 23, the Pirates scored 55 runs in five games and only gave up 11 runs.

“We just played good baseball through the entire weekend,” Huber said.

“We made a couple of errors in our very first game against the Regina Blue Jays, but we turned things around from there.

“Once we got that first win, we had a ton of confidence. You don’t really think about it in the moment as you’re going up against the other top teams, but it’s just a lot of enjoyment for everyone when you are playing well.”

In the championship contest against the Parkland Expos of Yorkton, the Pirates scored three runs in the fifth inning and then had a shutout performance

Prior to Friday’s trade, Albers had spent the season with the Gwinnett Braves, who are the AAA farm club to the National League team in Atlanta.

During his time with the AAA farm team to the Atlanta Braves, he compiled a 12-3 record with a 2.61 earned run average in 120.2 innings of work.

In 26 appearances with the Braves, Albers had 115 strikeouts and walked only 19 batters.

It’s been an interesting season for the Northwest Prairie Pirates, which saw the team battle through a number of injuries.

However, after getting everyone healthy and winning the Midget AA Tier I provincial championships last month in Swift Current, the Lloydminster based team with a number of area players are eager to build on their success this weekend at the Western Canadian Championship in Kamloops, B.C. “When we went to the provincials, we had a mentality going in there that no one was going to take that title from us, which is the mindset we need to have again this weekend,” Unity’s Tanner Huber said.

“We got all of our pitchers back just before Swift Current and we started to get some good at bats together. We are hitting the ball harder than we were at the start of the year and we’ve been making a lot of good plays defensively.”

“Looking back on it, our pitching staff was the biggest key to our success in the game,” Cubbon said.

“Obviously they didn’t allow a run, but we had a lot more depth in our lineup compared to the Expos.”

The Pirates will arrive in Kamloops Thursday and will take to the field for the first time at 9:30 a.m. local time Friday against the Prince George Knights.

They will also be playing against the host Kamloops River Dogs, the Portage Pirates of Manitoba and the Black Gold Giants from Leduc, Alta.

This year’s trip to the Western Canadian Championships will be the second for Cubbon, as he was on the North Battleford Beavers squad that captured a provincial title and finished third at Westerns.

“It will be important for us to start the tournament with a win,” Cubbon said.

“I know with the Beavers last year, we lost that first game and we were in catch up mode the rest of the weekend, especially as the top two teams only make it to the playoffs.”

The title game will take place Sunday at 7 p.m.

“It’s hard to put into words right now,” Albers told the media Monday.

“You never know when these opportunities are going to come up or how many of them you are going to get.”

While the Braves are well out of the playoff mix, the Mariners are currently a game and a half back of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for the second Wild Card spot in the AL. With the Mariners rotation in flux, it’s not clear when Albers’ next big league start will take place.

Mahoney was a star baseball player going back to the 1970’s, having played on five different division Minor League Saskatchewan Championship teams. While playing with a Regina Midget team in 1973, he had a strong showing at the Provincial Championships and was asked by the Melville Elks to play with them for the National Midget Tournament in Barrhead, Alta.

At this tournament, Mahoney had 14 hits in 22 trips to the plate and batted .636 to win the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and All Star right fielder honours as the Elks went on to win the title.

Ross Mahoney on the Melville squad was Terry Puhl, who was scouted by Wayne Morgan for the Houston Astros and would play for the Major League Baseball team from 1977 to 1990.

In 1974, while still eligible to play in Midget and a member of the Swift Current Indians, Mahoney was voted Rookie of the Year in the South Saskatchewan Baseball League as a member of the Swift Current Indians.

At this time Morgan suggested Mahoney attend Merced Community College in California. He had previously had an offer from Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs.

However, Mahoney had hurt his left knee in a kneeto-knee hit while playing hockey so decided not to pursue these baseball offers.

He then returned to play two more years with Swift Current followed by another eight years with the Regina Red Sox. In 1980, as a player on a

combined Regina Red Sox/ Saskatoon Patrick Liners team, Mahoney won the Canadian Senior Championships in Trois-Rivieres, Que. He shone at the event, hitting a number of home runs.

Mahoney played in three other Canadian Senior Championships in Chatham, N.B., Brandon, Man. and his hometown of Regina.

Following his playing years, he branched out into umpiring and coaching, including Pee Wee, Bantam, Juvenile and High School teams in Regina.

In 1986, as Manager of the Regina Juvenile Red Sox, he was voted Saskatchewan Coach of the Year after taking his team to the Western Canadian Championships and earning a berth to the Canadian tournament in Richmond, B.C. Mahoney also coached two excellent Regina Bantam teams that went on to a pair of National Bantam Championships in North Bay, Ont. and Summerside, P.E.I. He also coached baseball teams at Dr. Martin LeBoldus High School in Regina in the 1990’s, as well as umpiring high school games.

Presently, Mahoney is in his fourth season as the Assistant General Manager of the NHL’s Washington Capitals after being the director of amateur scouting for the team for 16 years.

The top disc golfers in Saskatchewan will be battling it out in Centennial Park this weekend.

For the first time ever, the Battlefords Community Disc Golf Club will be the host club for the 12th annual Saskatchewan Open Provincial Disc Golf Championship, which will take place Saturday and Sunday.

“With the success and growth we’ve had here with our program in the Battlefords over the last couple of years, Saskatchewan Disc Golf contacted us and asked if we would be interesting in hosting the provincials,” BCDGC president Evan Zimmer said.

around the province to different courses, and with the renovations that we made here to expand the course in Centennial Park to 18 holes, we were in the criteria that they were looking for in having the event.”

Registration for the event will close on Saturday at 9 a.m., but there are currently almost 50 golfers who will be coming to North Battleford for the event.

“We’re expecting some last minute additions and people showing up the day of, but we’re hoping to have 60 people on the course for the weekend,” Zimmer said.

“A good chunk of the competitors will be from the Battlefords, but we’re also expecting golfers from Saskatoon, Regina, Lloyd-

Saturday will feature the only rounds for the novice division, who play the course two times, while Sunday will see the final two rounds for the advanced and pro division.

“When it comes to those upper divisions, they will have to deal with some additional out of bounds areas that will increase the difficulty of the course, but I think the out of town players will spend a bit of time adjusting to the shorter distances as a whole,” Zimmer said. “A lot of the other courses in the province generally have longer holes than what we have here. For example, Saskatoon has a number of 300 and 400 foot holes but not many of the holes that they’ll see here. As a result, I think many golfers will have to make some adjustments to be more accurate on those shorter holes instead of trying to have the all-out throws and short putts they have on those longer holes they are used to.”

The first round of each day of competition will get underway at 10 a.m., with the second and final round getting underway at 2 p.m.

“There’s a few events taking place between the rounds on Saturday, which will include the ring of fire putting challenge and a longest drive competition,” Zimmer said.

“We’re inviting everyone in the community to come out and watch on both days. We’ve had a lot of support here locally over the last of couple years but we want to have those that may not have seen disc golf before to come out and see some of the top players in the province here this weekend.”

The summer of 2017 will be one that the Unity Cardinals won’t soon forget.

Not only did they make it to the championship game of the provincial Tier III senior baseball championships on their home diamond Sunday, but they also won the North Saskatchewan River Baseball League title for the first time in their 18-year history.

“At the start of the year we had some fairly high expectations about what we wanted to do,” Cardinals coach and third baseman Graeme Gieni said.

“We had never been to the league final before so to get there was really awesome. It was a bummer not to win the provincial title, especially since we were playing at home, but it was

still a really good season.”

The Cardinals finished the regular season in first place in the Colliar Division with a 10-4 record, which earned them the second overall seed in the playoffs.

Following clean sweeps over the North Battleford Beavers and the Standard Hill Lakers, the Cardinals came away with the championship in a three-game battle over the top-ranked Border City Jays of Lloydminster.

“Everything really came together for us for the last couple of weeks of the season, especially with our hitting and pitching,” Gieni said.

“We got a big boost from having Rhett Feser, Blake Robertson and Cory Wildeman in our rotation, as it gave us a pretty big advantage on the mound.”

“The league’s been dominated over the last few years by a couple of teams, so it’s nice to break through and be in the mix.

It says a lot for the strength of the league as well, as now there’s a number of teams battling for a title and competing well at the provincial championships.”

As the host team for the Tier III senior men’s championship, the Cardinals gave their fans a lot to cheer about as they made their way to the final.

Despite a valiant effort, they were unable to snag a second title in as many weeks as they fell 12-9 to the Northeast Red Sox from Melfort.

“This was the second straight year we lost in the finals, so it was pretty disappointing obviously,” Gi-

eni said.

“We played well all weekend and we had a really strong game against Wilkie in the semifinal, but we came up against a better hitting team in the final and they came up with some clutch plays when they needed them.”

While the new season is still months away, the Cardinals should once again have a strong team when the 2018 campaign begins.

“As of right now, we’re expecting almost everyone to be back with us next summer,” Gieni said. “The only guy we’re not totally sure about is Rhett, as he’s pitching for the Saskatchewan Under-21 Selects team in Ottawa this weekend and he might have a chance to play at a higher level next year.

“Our core group of guys will be back and our expectations are to hopefully repeat.”

Meota News - Thunderstorms cause disruption in TV reception

Thunderstorms have caused a disruption in our TV reception and programs, recently. However there are plans in place to improve services in the near future. Much groundwork precedes the building of another tower to serve this area but Meota is the company’s next upgrading project.

A former Meota resident, Gordon Colliar of Cache Creek area, was fortunate to have his home saved from the B.C. fires by the water bombers. Gordon is the son of Bob and Betty Colliar of Meota.

though, follows this one as a couple who relocated in British Columbia after losing their home to fire in Fort MacMurray last year have lost their second home in the B.C. fires.

Wild portulaca is a weed problem still, as it is every summer and I’m running out with my kettle of boiling water every time I see a plant in this yard. MACDONALD: William Roy (Bill Macdonald) 1949 – 2017. It is with great sadness Bill’s family must announce his death on Friday, July 21, 2017 in North Battleford, Sask. Born May 9, 1949, Bill was the son of the late William Roy and Muriel (Flynn) Macdonald. Bill was a jack-of-all trades during his life, working in construction, on farms, in battery companies and just prior to his death he was an employee of Scott Campbell Dodge in North Battleford. Bill was a very active member of the Royal Canadian Legion #9 in Windsor, Nova Scotia and Branch #70 in North Battleford where he organized many activities. Bill was predeceased by both his mom and dad, an infant brother Donald, an infant sister Barbara Ann, sisters Sharon and Kathy and his eldest son William (Little Billy). Bill is survived by his loving wife, and best friend Carol, North Battleford, SK, his daughter Michelle, Castlegar, B.C., his son Michael, sisters Joyce Perrie, Merritt, B.C., and Janet Clare, Windsor, Nova Scotia, and brother Doug Macdonald, Windsor, Nova Scotia, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles. Memories of Eagle Hills Community Club

When many of the prairie’s old schools were closed down, they were turned into active community centres. Now they are being forced to close mainly due to no interest and the tough government rules and stiff regulations.

But the history of it all lives on and will be remembered for many, many years yet to come. It’s a history to be passed on down to the gen-

erations to come. After all Canada is only 150 years old. That’s pretty young compared to many other countries in the world.

The little community of Eagle Hills has now faced the battle and now has come to an end as well. The school was built in 1905 and was kept up as a school until 1967. Shortly after, Eagle Hills Community Centre club was formed.

When it closed its doors in the summer of 2013, the building was put for sale

and sold. All the contents went to their club members.

Their funds were then donated to various non-profit clubs such the Royal Canadian Legion No. 9 in Battleford, Hillcrest Centre, the Battleford Vintage Automobile Club, Fred Light Museum and Battleford Tot Lot, all in Battleford.

The final wind-up meeting for the Eagle Hills Community club members was held at Li Kings Cafe in Battleford for a dinner meeting. Close to 16 club

It was decided that all the remaining club funds be donated to the blacksmith shop at the Fred Light Museum in Battleford and to have the blacksmith shop be called Eagle Hills Blacksmith Shop. A sign will be added to the blacksmith shop with the Eagle Hills name on it. The sign will be donated by all the club members.

They also want to donate all the Eagle Hills souvenirs from previous reunions to the museum for disposal as they see fit with the profit going to the museum.

The highlight of the community club was the publishing of their two history books. In 1985, The Eagle Hills Re-Echoing Times, a hard cover book, was published. After thousands of hours of research and interviews with all their old pioneers, they were able to produce the hard-covered book that they were all so proud of to present to the public for sale. They were soon all sold out. Their second book, Eagle Hills ReEchoing Times Volume 2, was a follow up to celebrate Eagle Hills’ 100th Anniversary in 2005. They are still available at the Fred Light Museum in Battleford. The final event to be held at Eagle Hills Community Centre was a socialize celebration to listen to good music and share lots of good memories of Eagle Hills.

Eagle Hills school was built in 1905 on S.W. 21-4216 on land owned by W.R Waines. The builder was Charles Boughey, a carpenter and Massey Harris dealer in Battleford at that time. The school was 20 ft

by 28 ft and built at the cost of $800.

The first teacher was Miss Gladys Pilgram, who later married Carl Simpson. Some of the first students were Roy, Jay and Pearl Laycock, Rita Waines, the Rebitts, Rosalie and Caroline Pambrun, Jim, Johnnie and George Ballendine and Alice Price.

The first Christmas concert was held in 1905. Church services and dances were held regularly in the early days. They were all well attended. On Valentine’s Day 1945 the schoolhouse was destroyed in a fire. Classes were temporarily held at Ralph Owen’s home until the new school was built.

In the years of operation there were 45 schoolteachers boarding at the homes of W.R. Waines, CIG Smith and Roy Owen. The schoolhouse played pledged an important part in the lives of all the rural people and the families. Church services with weekly Sunday School classes, teas, plays, bridal showers, ski parties, election meetings and many dances were among the activities that took place. The school closed in 1967 with the students being transported by school buses to Battlefords schools.

munity Club was formed in 1968 taking over the building in a non-profit organization. A 20 ft addition was added to the north end of the old school building in 1972.

The centre continued to be an active part of the community with reunions every five years from 1970 to 2005. In 2005 they celebrated 100 years in the same area. Following are some of the activities that took place at the community centre over the years: The 4-H Multiple Club used the facility for their monthly meetings, events to honour the pioneers, First Nations Pambrun reunion in 2003, heritage presentations, many weddings, the Smiling Johnnie and Eleanor Dahl Show, 1985 Wagon Trek, several family reunions, family Christmas get-togethers, Kaiser tournaments for 10 years, EMO meetings, Battlefords Treasure Hunters club meetings and their annual two day Treasure Hunt for coins and buried tokens to hunt for to earn prizes, Waines Grain Growers Association No. 1128 Battlefords Eagle Hills Rural Telephone Company, Eagle Hills United Farmers, Dacer and Porter elevator meetings, Eagle Hills dnow plow club.

The community club supported BCYC youth group, some 4-H achievement days, hospital foundation as well as many other non-profit organizations.

They also have entered floats in the Battlefords parades.

Eagle Hills, I’m sure, will be remembered for a good many years to come by many people young and old.

Get revenge against an enemy using weed seeds When Ed called yesterday, the wife talked to him as I was painting a cupboard door on the balcony. My old neighbour was laughing at my expense as my wife informed Ed that I was being cheap and stripping kitchen cupboard doors and repainting them a new colour to save money.

My wife told Ed that of course she has a wait and see attitude.

If the doors do not take on new life with the new paint, I will have to replace the doors.

My newly painted doors better look good or else they are getting discarded with their new paint on them.

Ed had heard there was more than painting

going on our way. He had heard of three stabbings in downtown Chilliwack.

He wanted to know if they were gang related.

The wife told him that sometimes they are, and sometimes they are drug related.

She informed Ed that crime and murder are common in our neighbourhood.

She said that here in B.C., folks get even or take revenge way too seriously. They use guns and knives to even a score, and it becomes deadly quickly.

Jesus refers to it in one of his parables. He refers to a man in a parable who sowed good wheat seed in his field.

But while his men were sleeping his enemy came and sowed weeds among his wheat seed and went away. The

word used for weeds is, ‘darnel,’ a weed that looks very much like wheat in its infancy but becomes apparent when it comes out in a head.

His servants in Jesus’ parable asked if the man, their master, had sown good seed because the wheat had lots of weeds.

The man said that an enemy had planted weeds

in his wheat.

Planting darnel in an enemy’s field was a common way of getting revenge.

It was so common in fact that a Roman law was made forbidding the sowing of weeds in another’s field.

Although similar in size to wheat seeds, the seeds of darnel will turn black and are poisonous to both humans and livestock.

If you tried to pull out the darnel when it was growing in your field, you would destroy the wheat beside it.

At harvest time, the darnel had to be carefully harvested first, bundled up and burned so that none of the poisonous

seeds would get mixed in with the wheat seed.

Planting darnel was destructive to an enemy’s wheat crop.

In his parable, Jesus was showing that he sowed good seed in the world, and the good seed are the sons of his kingdom. The devil sowed his seed among the seed of Jesus. The sons of the devil grow beside the sons of the kingdom.

Who is good and who is not will become evident when Jesus returns and separates those who are his and those who belong to the devil. The good will go to glory with Jesus, and the evil ones will go to the fiery furnace.

The parade was led by Diane and Dale Kieper carrying the flags riding horseback, followed by the RCMP then kids on bikes or scooters, two girls from the swimming pool with a duck and flamingo floaters. They were followed by the 150 Committee with decorated quad and walking, a team of Clydesdales pulling a wagon, horseback riders, the Radisson Town Council float, four vintage tractors, Farmall Hs of Daryl Amey’s and Massey

About 25 people gathered at Halcyonia School 10 miles northeast of Borden on Aug. 13 for a barbecue potluck supper and visiting. Eric Pearce did the grilling of the meat and there were many salads and desserts to choose from. The schoolhouse was open to go in and browse at the photo gallery of early settlers, their homes and families on display.
