Former Edam resident named to Order of Canada

Staff Former privy council clerk Wayne Wouters has become an officer of the Order of Canada.

Wouters was born at Lady Minto Hospital in Edam in 1951 and grew up on

the family farm.

Wouters earned degrees from the University of Saskatchewan and Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont., before joining the Government of Saskatchewan in 1977.

Wounded Warriors bus stops at Battleford

Veterans heading to Lloydminster for the Wounded Warriors Weekend were treated to a meal.

Staff At the Wounded Warriors greeting last Thursday at Fort Battleford, North Battleford Mayor Ryan Bater paid homage to TV personality Bob McGrath, who was in attendance.

“This event is brought to you by the letters ‘N-B,’” Bater said.

McGrath arrived with the Wounded Warriors bus, which was carrying over 90 veterans, first responders and their

families to Lloydminster for this year’s Wounded Warriors weekend.

Wounded Warriors Weekend is a nonprofit organization that intends to aid and promote the healing process of those affected with PTSD. The Wounded Warriors Weekend this year took place in Lloydminster and surrounding area.

The Wounded Warriors stopped in Battleford for a barbeque and stayed for about an hour.

As the veterans stepped off the bus, cadets lined the entrance to the museum, and Jim Ramsay played bagpipes.

The Wounded Warriors were on their way from Radisson. Motorcyclists from the Canadian Legion of Riders accompanied the bus.

Injuries not always physical

Dear Editor, Writer Charles Dickens was paid per word. I would pay writers to add one particular word to reports of traumatic events. The word is “physical” and it would precede “injury” and “recovery.”

In my local newspaper, I read “Police investigating self-inflicted gunshot death near Blaine Lake.” After the sentence “The RCMP officers sustained no injuries during the incident,” I exclaimed “no PHYSICAL injuries.”

A writer can observe no physical injuries. A writer cannot observe the probable mental, emotional, and/or spiritual injuries that happen when we witness a death or a near-death. How could you not be wounded by the sights and smell of that disturbing scene or the sound of that fatal gunshot?

If we read that our police, first responders, firefighters, armed forces members, and veterans were “physically” injured or not “physically” injured, we will be reminded that they may have other injuries.

We also need to extend this to victims and villains.

Imagine being stabbed by someone you dated. Would you make “a full recovery in the weeks following the attack”? This statement may inflict a secondary wound — minimizing, disbelieving, or denying your first wound.

Post trauma people need to be allowed to heal in their own way and on their own time. The next time you read “no injuries,” “full recovery,” or other allpurpose observations, please mentally add the word

“physical.” We can help people heal by acknowledging their wounds are real even when not physical.

Death of twinning project sure to mean real deaths in the future The great twinning project is dead, for now.

In the July 26 Estevan Mercury, it was revealed that after four years of consideration, the province is now going to put in passing lanes on Highways 39 and 6 from Estevan to Regina. It looks like twinning is off the table, for now.

I lived in North Battleford during the time they twinned Highway 16 from the Battlefords to Lloydminster, and just after the Saskatoon to Battlefords portion was completed.

Prior to the Saskatoon portion being done, the Battlefords News-Optimist was full of reports of fatal collisions on that stretch.

Julian Sadlowski, who was mayor during my tenure with the News-Optimist, told me about the continual string of fatalities on that road. He had fought long and hard to get that highway twinned, for that very reason.

We continually reported on fatal collisions on the Lloyd stretch as it was ever so slowly being twinned. But when the twinning was complete in each section, something remarkable happened.

Those very regular stories of fatal collisions all but ceased to exist.

Association 2012 Columnist of the Year I was there when thenPremier Lorne Calvert buried a loonie in the last piece of pavement, completing the project. It was a good day.

Two years ago I had an energetic discussion with a prominent Weyburn citizen who thought that a twinned highway bypassing that community would be horrible for its economy. She had a point.

Having visited Maidstone recently, roughly 10 years after it was bypassed, I would say twinning did hurt the community, but only to a certain extent. It hurt the highway commercial businesses, i.e. the potty-break places.

The businesses in the region that got hurt the most just might have been the mortuaries.

But Estevan has had a two-lane truck bypass now for a few years, and I don’t think that has dramatically hurt many businesses here.

Yes, many restaurants have closed, but that was because of the now threeyear long downturn in oil activity.

And which is more important, selling bags of chips or caskets?

Fundamentally, the decision not to twin those highways in the southeast is related to oil. The drop of a billion dollars in revenue each year because of the oil crash has meant the province must tighten its belt in all areas.

If that means the province can add passing lanes as opposed to full-blown twinning for one-tenth to one-twentieth the cost (a guess, but I dare say a pretty good one), then the government will obviously punt on twinning.

Manitoba has obviously taken this strategy on its very busy Highway 10 between Brandon and Riding Mountain National Park, the province’s only na-

tional park. That highway, the primary route from both Brandon and Winnipeg to the park, is crazy in the summer time. In the past few years they’ve been adding passing lanes as well as repaving, something that was sorely needed. About a third of the distance has been covered, and it has absolutely made a difference.

But most of that traffic is pickups pulling boats and trailers, with the occasional grain semi.

Saskatchewan Highway 39, between Estevan and Weyburn, sees an awful lot more wide loads, tandem steer trucks, service rigs, drilling rig moves, crew trucks and more. Plus, the highway is the principle route from the American Midwest manufacturing base to all of Western Canada. Every day I see trucks hauling massive mining truck tires, presumably to places like Fort McMurray. We also see the very large components for those trucks going along this highway as well.

By Prairie North Health Region Volunteer Services We often find ourselves reacting to what we experience as a “first impression.” And so it is when visiting our hospitals with Prairie North Health Region. Our greeter volunteers at Battlefords Union Hospital, Lloydminster Hospital and Meadow Lake Hospital (Northwest Health Facility) are there to make your first impression positive.

It can be stressful dealing with aging and health issues services; rushing to visit family and friends while they are hospitalized; emergency, ICU or palliative care situations; or arriving for appointments and regional meetings. What’s the process?

Where do I go? How to get there?

With this program originating in the Battlefords, 13 years ago, and now part of our Volunteer Program in Lloydminster and Meadow Lake, volunteers are at the Information Desk weekdays, 8 a.m. to noon and noon to 4 p.m. They give out room numbers to visitors, they clean wheelchairs after each use, deliver flowers, give out toys to children, assist the foundation with their special events. They escort people to meetings in our boardrooms, to administration areas, assist with discharges, meet the Handi Bus, and wait with patients in the lobby while their family gets the car from the parking lot! This is especially appreciated in

those winter months.

All our volunteers begin with an interview, enrollment, criminal record check, oath of confidentiality, orientation and training. Schedules are made up every two month and we have a great system for those times that you are not able to make your shift! Our greeter volunteer program really suits the schedules of those who would like to volunteer on a regular basis at particular times of the year.

Rachel Cey, the youngest daughter of Ruth Weber and Joe Cey, was recently awarded a $40,000 scholarship from the University of Saskatchewan. Rachel is attending the U of S in the fall to begin her studies in biomedical sciences.

The George and Marsha Ivany President’s First and Best Scholarship valued at $40,000, or $10,000 per year over four years, is awarded annually to give students beginning their studies at the University of Saskatchewan. To be eligible, the students must graduate from a Canadian high school and go directly to the U of S. Eligibility also requires students have a minimum high school average of 95 per cent, demonstrate leadership ability, as well as make significant contributions in their school or community.

Order of Canada for Edam’s Wayne Wouters Staff Former privy council clerk Wayne Wouters has become an officer of the Order of Canada.

Wouters was born at Lady Minto Hospital in Edam in 1951 and grew up on the family farm.

Wayne’s brother Glenn wrote in an email that Wayne “often commented

that it was his raising on a farm that taught him the values that helped him in his achievements.”

Wouters earned degrees from the University of Saskatchewan and Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, before joining the Government of Saskatchewan in 1977.

In 1982, Wouters began his federal political career,

joining the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources as Director of Industry Analysis.

Wouters held a number of positions, before being appointed Clerk of the Privy Council in 2009, a position that reported directly to Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The Clerk of the Privy council is “the most senior non-political

Living by the lake a blessing in hot weather

We have had so much hot weather, living by the lake has been a bonus. Where my family is building in Lakeview, they would take a break to cool off, midday and evenings, and to relieve their sweating. Drinking lots of water and Gatorade also helped lots. Home for the past weekend were Greg and Joseph Lambert from Fort McMurray, and Carrie and Neil Lambert and son Eric Sandstrom, from Calgary. Carrie and Neil stayed and worked with her father all week. They all had a chance to visit with cousin Karl Fransoo and a few others who were at the lake.

Top bridge score on July 24 at the Do Drop In was Robert Iverson and second was Trudy Iverson. The duplicate bridge played in Meota the following evening found top score by Margaret Dyck and Maureen Campbell, second were Vern Iverson and Eric Callbeck and third were Robert Iverson and Linda Ard. In southern Alberta harvest is getting into full swing. The onions are ready as well as the grain crops. They were combining at Milk River a week ago. It is all a month earlier than usual.

The funeral for the late Winston Tait, one of our pioneers, was held in the Meota Community Complex on July 25, with a full house of family and friends. A man like Winston will be truly missed, but remembered.

Visiting with Mary and Walter Tait, from Saskatoon, was an old friend and former Meota resident, Belva Head. She enjoyed visiting with many others too.

Thanks to the group of swimmers who posed for me after their lessons last week, I and our readers appreciate sharing what our young folks are doing.

With the weather being so hot there was no one shivering under a big towel, or getting cold, as so often has been the case. The beach has been well attended by holiday folks, young and old, and in between.

Did anyone else find their milk had turned sour after the big storm last week? I couldn’t believe my half gallon was sour the next day, and the due date was a week away, then I recalled it happened before, some years ago. Going onto Google and sure enough the majority of people have seen this happen before. It is not just an old wives’ tale.

The trip out to Leduc with my daughter was uneventful but very inter-

esting last Saturday. The crops are coming along nicely and most of the hay crops are baled up. Roadside mowing has started and looks so tidy when it’s done. Many farmers have baled the hay in the ditches but lots of places it hasn’t been done yet. The blue flax crops in one area showed up with yellow canola fields or grain crops beside or behind, so pretty.

We didn’t see any crops destroyed by hail, but there may have been some damaged.

past Devon to the University of Alberta’s Devonion Gardens. It was quite a lengthy walk but with a nice breeze and shady places to rest, I managed fine. The displays of every kind of plant, flower and tree was there somewhere, but most showed the effect of a lengthy drought period. They have had rain in the last week or two, and many plants looked very good. The whole centre of the garden area has been fenced off with a big development taking place behind it. The Aga Kahn, the spiritual leader of Shia Ismaili Muslims world wide, has donated 25 million dollars to University of Alberta Botanic Gardens to produce an Islamic Garden by 2018 – a first for western Canada – in the middle of it all.

It is sad to see the shutdown of about half the commercial businesses in Nisku leaving empty lots or lots full of vehicles with nowhere to go. The Ritchie Brothers auction space had very little on it, though their sales continue. Between the Edmonton airport and Leduc a huge market place is going up, similar to Crossiron Mills, north of Calgary, which will be interesting to visit when finished.

Ball diamonds still busy in Unity: provincials

Its August long weekend folks – that means take advantage of the last month of summer while you can.

August long weekend is yet another reminder to arrive alive and be patient when travelling.

Next weekend, the Unity Cardinals are hosting senior men’s baseball provincials and it includes eight teams. You can catch some great baseball as these teams vie for a provincial title including our home team Cards who hope to capture the win at home.

Unity’s ball season is far from over! Last weekend the Pee Wee and Midget boys baseball competed at their respective provincial events with results of gold and silver. Even though provincial competitions have been completed, teams that successfully captured their provincial title are now off to ball action that will continue into August for those teams and players off to compete at their respective Western Canadian championships.

In essence, even though ball season is not done officially for all teams, the actions at the four minor ball diamonds will be reduced as no more tournaments or provincial events will take place, however you can be sure the teams and players still competing will be getting in the practice time before they head to their next events.

There will be plenty of Unity Panther fans in the Battlefords this weekend as the U14 Western Canadian championship is being held Aug. 4 to 7.

This event will include a nine-team competition with two teams each from Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba and B.C. with Battleford Bandits serving as host team. The Unity Panthers roster includes Erika Alsager, Emma Baker, Makayla Bakken, Megan Brown, Hannah

Feser, Aryanne L’Heureux, Devyn McLean, Jaymie Myszczyszyn, Megan Ralston, Addison Rewerts, Abby Rutley, Paige Schultz along with head coach Doug Rutley, assisted by Denelle L’Heureux, Nicoel Bakken and Rene Feser.

The Bandits include Wilkie player Jenai Head.

Next weekend, the U16 softball category would head east to Brandon, Man., Aug. 10 to 13, representing as Team Sask No. 1, along with the Assiniboia Aces who Unity defeated in the gold medal game. This U16 division competed at a Western Canadian event in Regina two years ago. The roster includes players Morgan Huber, Elena Kohlman, Jillian Gampe, Rheanne Hofmann, Morgan Mock, Olivia Poschenreider, Breanna Elder, Jordan Heitt, Lauren Gartner, Brooklyn Anderson, Sydney Rubletz, Presli O’Donnell and pick up Jessie Herner from Kindersley. Team coaches are Brent O’Donnell, Janette Huber, Keith Heitt and Roy Mock.

August means there are just a few weeks left of swimming pool season and with the extended heat wave we have been experiencing, you can rest assured the cool dip is just what the doctor ordered (well that and the ice cream shop!).

The Unity Midgets throw their hats in celebration after capturing their Provincial championship in Saskatoon July 21st weekend. It was especially rewarding considering the unity minor ball program was unsure if they’d even be able to host a midget team this year, considering the midget division of this program had been absent for several years. Hats off to the players and coaches who made a remarkable comeback win from a 12-2 deficit in the semi final to use that momentum to help them capture their provincial title. Also congratulations to founding members Ron and Lucy Koenig who were awarded the Bob Pedde Memorial Award for the long-time dedication and commitment to the Special Olympics program.

A walk through the CMHA’s new building

The new CMHA North Battleford branch at 1602 103 St.

The Canadian Mental Health Association North Battleford branch is a number of things. It is a refuge for its members and a place for people with mental health issues to feel welcome. The new location at 103 Street and 16 Avenue serves as an office, a social space, and a house.

The CMHA is a nonprofit organization that supports people with significant mental health problems and mental illness. There are nine branches in Saskatchewan, with a number of others in different provinces.

Among the North Battleford branch’s offerings are social recreation programs, work experience programs, and life skills.

Increased membership and programming necessitated a bigger building than the previous location.

“We didn’t need new, we needed bigger,” Executive Director Jane Zielke de Montbrun said. “Before we were in a small skinny building that was 1,400 sq. ft., and it got to the point where we had a very difficult time trying to facilitate our programs with the space that we had.”

said when she started in 2011, there were about 65 members and 15 in the work program. By the end of March last year, there were 160 members, and about 38 to over 40 people in the work program, although the number fluctuates.

Zielke de Montbrun said the social recreation programs run four evenings a week and on weekends. Activities include men’s and ladies’ nights, movie night, wiener roasts and bowling. Members sign up to participate in the events. Socialization is the goal of the activities.

“People that have mental illness tend to isolate themselves,” Zielke de Montbrun said. “It’s part of the nature of the beast.”

Work programs involve a number of jobs in town, including flyer delivery, lawnmowing, snow removal, small moving jobs, delivering phone books, and cleaning the Civic Centre after North Stars games. Members also work at the David Laird campground, performing grounds maintenance, facility management, cleaning bathrooms and showerhouses, and bundling firewood.

said the work members perform is often seen as menial, but she said the work “contributes to the health of this community,” especially for elderly people who can’t shovel their sidewalks.

“Most everybody you see [at the branch] has a community mental health nurse to help support them, and often [nurses] will come to see them.”

The room also has a computer with internet access. Waits to see counselors can typically last six weeks, but the branch of-

along with a room for social recreation, a room with a washer and dryer, and a room for staff. Outside there are garden beds with flowers, and a new garage. The new building also has five washrooms, as opposed to two in the previous building.

Zielke de Montbrun said the fundraising target that includes the building costs was $615,000, and as of last month, there was $60,000 left to raise. Fundraising initiatives include a garden party in June, which raised $54,000.

CMHA staff include three full-time program coordinators, two part-time job coaches, one seasonal job coach, and members who are also employees.

The number of people in the building depends on the time of day. When Shelby Obermeyer opened the door, there were a half dozen people inside.

Later, the place was bustling as members gathered before going for coffee in CMHA vans.

Zielke de Montbrun said that one of her goals before she retires is to “establish supported housing for people with mental illness to successfully live independently.”

Peewee Beavers capture provincial title

When the North Battleford PeeWee AA Beavers started off their 2017 season, coach Carson Wouters asked the players to write down their goals for the year.

“Everyone wanted to go out and win a provincial championship,” Wouters said.

The Beavers did just that on July 23 in Lloydminster, as they went a perfect 5-0 over the course of the weekend on their way to winning the PeeWee Tier III championship.

“We put this team together from two teams in the Northwest League and they were able to mesh together really well,” Wouters said.

“The biggest things that made them successful was how hard they worked at practice. We really keyed in on improving their pitching and hitting and it showed at the end of the year.”

Prior to the provincials, the Beavers had competed in nine exhibition games and also made it to the semifinals at a tournament in Macklin.

Their trip to Lloydminster started off with 13-6 win over the Regina Pacers, though they had to claw their way back after giving up five runs in the top of the first inning.

“That first game was delayed by about an hour, so the nerves stared to build up for the guys a little bit,” Wouters said.

“Once we got those butterflies out of our system, we played really well and it set the tone for the rest of the round robin.”

The Beavers, who scored seven runs in the fifth inning to break open a 5-5 tie, were helped offensively in their victory by a three RBI performance from Cory Wouters.

On Saturday, the Beavers picked up a 9-4 win

over the Swift Current 57’s and cruised to an 11-1 triumph over the Saskatoon Cardinals to clinch a spot in the semifinals.

Dane Closen, Levi Scherman and Trayton Troesch each drove in two runs in the win over the 57’s, while the Beavers combined for eight hits and eight stolen bases in their triumph over the Cardinals.

Sunday’s semifinal contest against Carnduff was a wild affair, as the Beavers allowed six runs in the top of the first frame but

“There was a pretty small strike zone from the umpire so there was a lot of walks early on, but we made some adjustments and we got things going in

the right direction.”

The championship game against the Saskatoon Athletics was a lopsided affair, as the Beavers scored five runs in the first, second and fourth inning on their way to a 15-4 win and a provincial championship.

“That game was a continuation of what we had been doing all weekend long,” Wouters said. “Our hitting kept getting stronger in each game, and it all came together in that game.”

While the batting was impressive, it was the Beavers pitching that also made a big difference during the weekend.

Nate Monchuck had a strong showing in the final as he had six strikeouts and only allowed two runs on four hits.

“Our pitching was probably the biggest factor to our success,” Wouters said.

“It helped us out a lot.

“We had a lot of good arms on our roster and I

think we had five of our top six pitchers that we could have used in the last couple of games. Many of the teams had gone through their top guys already during the weekend, so that was something that worked in our favour.”

Looking ahead to next season, almost the entire Beavers squad will be moving up to the bantam ranks, as Steston Winterholt is the only player who is eligible to return.

“This was a little bit of a different year for the guys as they were playing with different kids, but I think the experience is something that will benefit everyone,” Wouters said.

“Some of them hadn’t played at a high level of baseball like this before, but it turned out well for the team. They grew in confidence as the year went on and that’s always important as you get to big tournaments like the provincials.”

Men’s and Women’s golf championship took place at the North Battleford Golf & Country Club earlier in the week, with just 18 members taking to the course.

Wally Gordey, Allie Raycraft, Dave Page and Don Dill took the top spot with a score of 38 for nine holes.

Cliff Campbell: Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Submitted by Jane Shury The Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum Association is proud to announce the selection of Cliff Campbell of Castor, Alta, to be inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame, Individual Category, on Saturday, Aug. 19, in Battleford.

Campbell was born and raised in the small town of Disley, and although the town had no more than 50 people it was a baseball power house for many years.

Campbell was a big part of the team’s success. He was a great pitcher, second baseman and a good hitter.

He had an amazing curve ball with a delivery as smooth as silk. The team won league titles six out of seven years with Campbell on the team.

Campbell also played in Regina with Balfour Tech during his high school years.

During the seven years he played with the Disley Cardinals in the Qu’Appelle Valley Baseball League, Campbell was an All Star for all seven seasons, winning the 1965 All Star second base, the 1966 All Star second base, pitcher and MVP, 1967 and 1968 All Star second base and pitcher, the 1969 All Star second base and MVP,

Unity baseball player earns scholarship to California

Cliff Campbell the 1970 All Star second base and in 1971, All Star second base, pitcher and MVP awards.

The Disley team, with Campbell pitching, won the QVBL Championship in 1965, 1966, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971 and 1972.

At age 16, pitching against the Regina Red Sox at a Holdfast sport’s day, he struck out their leading hitter twice.

In 1972, Disley defeated the Lumsden Cubs in the best of three semi-final games, then the Regina Canadians in the best of three finals, with Campbell pitching three out of the four games to win the championship.

Campbell was community minded. He coached Regina minor ball for 10 and 11 year olds and umpired. He was always the first to arrive and last to leave preparing the baseball diamonds for games.

He also coached boys and girls volleyball at the high school level, as well as being involved with curling bonspiels.

Having moved to Alberta to teach, Campbell continued over the years to return to play with his old team mates when possible.

Campbell has two daughters, Cathy and Heather, and one son, Rob. Campbell lives with his wife Pat in Castor.

S eve n t e e n -ye a r- o l d Jaden Hofmann was thrilled to learn his baseball career will continue to the next level.

Hofmann has been offered a scholarship to Merced College in California to play college baseball for the Blue Devils team, as well as begin his studies to become a mechanical engineer.

Hofmann played in the Unity minor ball system until first year Bantam where he then travelled to Lloydminster to play “AA” baseball before he chose to attend the Badlands Baseball Academy in Oyen, Alta., for both Grades 11 and 12.

“Attending the academy gave me the opportunity to play baseball in front of scouting staff from various levels of baseball at the various tournaments the team attended through the years,” Hoffman said.

“Finishing off my Grade 12 year strong with the Badlands team that included winning our final tournament in Winnipeg, going undefeated was a success story I am proud of.”

Hoffman has not personally met his new coaches yet however he has had plenty of communications with them through email, text and phone conversations.

As well, the baseball coach at Badlands Academy has also communicated with the California coaches in regards to Hofmann’s play.

“I am looking forward to the opportunity to go south and get a college degree while playing the sport that I am very passionate about,” Hoffman said. “ It was a big step a couple of years ago to leave home and chase my dream.

There were lots of bumps along the way, a lot of hard work, and a lot of sacrifices made to complete this first step. Now the hard work needs to continue so I can achieve the goals and results I have set out for the next level.”

ton. Lapcevich had been running close to the leaders early in that race but lost control on lap 40 after making contact with another racecar. Despite that, he made up ground as the race resumed and ended up in third place.

Labbe ended up holding off Kennington for the victory. Later, in speaking to reporters after leaving the car, Labbe collapsed. He had fainted, a result of the tremendous heat that the cars and drivers were under in that first race.

Fortunately, Labbe quickly recovered from that incident and he was back for race two, with Kennington in the front pole position for that race.

Most of race two was a two-way battle between Kennington and Lacroix.

But Lacroix faded in the late going and it was

Lapcevich who took advantage. He moved into second place and then took the lead over Kennington.

Lapcevich then held off Kennington the rest of the way for the victory.

For Lapcevich it was his second straight year as a winner in Saskatoon, after winning last year’s 250-lap event as a 16 year old. The win helped catapult Lapcevich to the Pinty Series title at the end of the season.

With wins by Labbe and Lapcevich and the solid showings by Lacroix and Kennington, the top of the Pinty’s series standings tightened up going into the next race at the Edmonton International Raceway.

The standings had Lacroix in first with 300 points, followed by Labbe with 298, Lapcevich at 274 and Kennington at 270.

“With training everyday to get stronger and the repetition of practice everyday allows a person to get better at your position,” Hoffman said.

“For the pitching staff, hitting your targets and spots in and around the plate was a priority so you reduced your walk ratio per game. Pitching was my primary position but I did play some first base as well.”

This summer, Jaden is playing baseball with the East Central AAA Midgets out of Veteran, Alta. in the Alberta baseball league.

Hofmann will be heading to Merced in early August as orientation with classes and baseball practise starting on the 14th.

“Fall exhibition games are played from late September thru to early November with their regular season and conference play starting at the end of January and ending in late May,” Hoffman said.

The Blue Devils compete in the Central Valley Conference and had a 2616 record this past season.

There were dual winners this year at the Velocity Prairie Thunder in Saskatoon.

Alex Labbe and Cayden Lapcevich both took the checkered flag at the event on the NASCAR Pinty’s Series circuit. They won under an all-new format at the Wyant Group Raceway on Wednesday night last week.

In previous years the annual NASCAR event was a single 250-lap race. This year, the race was split into two 100-lap events – one early in the evening in the hot sunshine, the other just as the skies were getting dark.

History of Borden Bridge featured at museum

The Borden Friendship Club held their monthly potluck supper on July 26 at the acreage of Ed and Dianne Rawlyk, with close to 40 out to enjoy a barbecue with burgers, hot dogs and a variety of salads along with decorated cupcakes and ice cream for dessert (decorated by Katelyn and Justin Worona).

Celebrating July birthdays were Ron and Sue Mills, Jean Sawchyn, Mel Kuntz, Gary Palmer and Laura Loeppky. After the meal, entertainment was provided by Bob Wardhaugh, Ed Neufeld and Archie Wainwright who played and sang many old favourites.

On July 29, the Borden Museum had a program on Adventures at the Museum, with Archie Wainwright giving the details and showing pictures of the building of the Borden Bridge in 1937/38. In the background was the replica of the cement bridge built by Frank Block. The building of the bridge was a make work program during the depression and over 200 men, mostly local from Borden and Langham, worked on the construction pouring the concrete all winter. They mixed it on site, with the gravel coming by train from Big-

The men lived in a bunkhouse 24’ x 32’, with 100 bunks, the dining hall fed 80 at a time and the workers received $.35 an hour and paid $.30 for their meals. The bridge at that time cost $344,000 and used 13,000 tons of concrete. Archie gave much more background, on the CN bridge, the ferry that ran prior to the bridge being built and some local history. Cookies and beverages were served after to the guests attending. Each Saturday, at 2 p.m., the museum will present another Adventure at the Museum, so drop in and learn some more history of Borden and area.

The Canadian National Junior Shorthorn show was held in Lloyminister July 26 - 28, and attending from Borden was Rachel Sutherland, along with her parents Glenn and Sheri. Rachel exhibited her Shorthorn Yearling heifer and placed first in her class. In the Senior age group, Rachel was first in Public Speaking and Team Grooming, second in Showmanship, third

in Senior Judging.

Radisson held their Show and Shine on a hot blistering July 30 Sunday, with 122 vehicles entered in the cars, trucks and tractors categories. During the afternoon providing entertainment was The Cadillac Kid from Borden and William and the Shadows. For the kids, there were barrel train rides provided by the Ruzeskys. There were 36 vintage snowmobiles, mainly from Alberta, and travelling the farthest with their machines were Dwayne and Kelly Grant from Calgary. Medstead celebrates faith with Bible school

Vacation Bible School (VBS) has a rich history dating back to 1894. The rural municipality of Medstead has been a proud participant in this endeavor for well over 50 years.

The 2017 VBS took place in Glenbush, a small community within the RM, between July 24 and July 28.

According to Peggy Pauls, member of the local branch of the Mennonite church and long-time engaged participant, the program serves to introduce kids to God, and to how He can be a part of their every-

edstead News day lives. Every year has a different motif. 2017’s program which ran from 9 a.m. to noon had the theme of ‘Galactic Starveyors’ to “show kids the God that is over the moon in love with them.”

The co-ordinator of the endeavor is Vanessa Driedger, who arranged the week’s events for a turnout of roughly 40 children from all over the area.

Though 40 is a great deal,

it is worth noting that past years have seen congregations of closer to 100.

Pauls emphasizes the importance of exercising faith, noting that there is currently the freedom to do so, which will perhaps not last forever. As to what makes this annual event significant to Pauls, “It is good outreach to draw community people to learn about and introduce kids to God, and the idea that they can have fun doing that with friends.”

Though locally co-ordinated by the Mennonite Church, the annual occurrence is interdenominational. By keeping its

doors open to all of Christian faith, it allows for children from all backgrounds to have the chance to learn the teachings of Jesus and how He can be a part of their everyday lives. The importance of this is significant in the Christian culture, particularly for those at an age where memories will remain for a lifetime.

The event is set up for ages 4-12, and split into four classes. The youngest being the preschoolers, the next being Grades 1 and 2, further being Grades 3 and 4 and the final group being the oldest of the children, usually up to Grade 6. The

This group of plus-55 ladies and men belong to the Lone Rangers RV Camping Club.

This club was formed in 1997 for legally single campers with RVs who enjoy the companionship of other travelers. This is not a match-making club!

The visitors at our park were from Marcelin, Edmonton, Camrose, Sherwood Park, Nanton, Saskatoon, Mayerthorpe and Vermillion.

The five campouts in the summer are from Monday to Friday once a month.

Each have their own unit and can leave at any time.

Some of the things they liked about our park was the shade and privacy and the level ground of each space as well as the clean shower area and the dumping station. They found the businesspeople polite and friendly. The town office staff was very helpful on

their arrival.

Their only negative was that they couldn’t register in advance to be sure of a campsite and would be glad to send a deposit ahead of time.

They enjoyed walking in our beautifully kept park and watching the waterfowl on the little lake. They plan on returning next July.

There are a variety of activities for the children throughout the week. Students receive a manual containing valuable and fun literature, engage in singing and making crafts.

According to Pauls, it is an annual tradition for the eldest class to craft a wood project, something which Mr. Pauls facilitates.

On the final day of the classes, Friday the 28, there was a hot dog roast and ice cream event wherein participating children had the opportunity to show their

parents what they learned over the course of the camp. This provided the families a chance to engage together in the love, learning and fun had over the course of the week.

There are many ways that societies are brought together. In the spirit of taking a village to raise a child, love, belief, and family are very powerful tools to ensure future generations carry forth the cultures and teachings of unity in community. Annual traditions such as the camp just had are a beautiful way that the community stays strong.

Or enjoy the bump and jostle of a horsedrawn wagon ride. Visit with the friendly volunteers around the Heritage Village. Get your toes tapping with great Saskatchewan-based bands.

For the youngsters there will be a petting zoo with everything from geese to a llama! Learn about agility and obedience and get tips on how to train your dog at the dog show. Have your face painted, play and jump in the jungle gyms, grab a balloon or get a temporary tattoo. Don’t miss the scavenger hunt and join in the sack and three-legged races! Roll up your sleeves and hammer some nails or race against the clock to twist a nut onto a bolt at the Pioneer Competitions.

OBITUARIES JACKSON:It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Lloyd Eric Jackson on July 19, 2017 at the age of 68 years old. At his request, there will be no funeral service. He is predeceased by his parents, Phyllis and Sidney Jackson and in-laws Elton and Betty Alcock. He is lovingly survived by his wife, Kay Jackson; his brother Gordon (Joan) Jackson; his children, Jade (Blaine) Boyko, Connie (Russell) Beaudoin, Karen (Lindsay) Halliwell, Blair (Sam) Jackson; grandchildren Nathan, Ashley, and Eric Boyko, Stephanie (Daniel) Reiter, Dakota Shuh, Garrett, Kara, and Ryan Halliwell, and Joshua and Amber Jackson and his dog Roxy. Lloyd was born in North Battleford, Sk. on July 3, 1949 and grew up on the family farm in the Speers area. He attended school in Keatley, Speers and Mayfair and continued farming after high school until present. He married Kay Alcock of Prince Albert and started a family. He enjoyed spending time with his wife and four children and loved when the grandchildren arrived and became such a large part of his daily life. Besides farming, Lloyd enjoyed golfing and cards, snap plaid shirts, television and movies, Louis Lamour books, sudokus and KFC. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family.

JOHNSON: Jim (James) Frederick Johnson was born July 19, 1939 and passed away July 19, 2017 at the age of 78 years. Jim is lovingly remembered by: his wife, Wilma and his children: Christine (David) Dunk of Medstead, SK and their family: Erin (Chet) Dunk Sargeant and Michael Dunk, Jerry Johnson of Birch Lake, SK, Dennis (Byrle) Johnson of Big River, SK and their family: Ray (Michelle) Friesen and his son, Krew, Madison Krienke who is Jim’s great granddaughter, Richard (Shelsea) Johnson of Prince Albert, SK and their family: Kyle Johnson, Karissa Johnson (Andru) and their children, Summer and Jupiter, Aaron Johnson of Birch Lake, SK and his son: Cody Francon, Brian (Brigitte) Johnson of Birch Lake, SK and their family: Mackenzy and Owen, siblings: Florence Johnson of Bapaume, SK and Margaret (Luther) Liick of Creston, BC also numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. He is predeceased by: parents, Leonard and Clara Johnson, brothers, Henry and George Johnson, and step-granddaughter, Coral Friesen.

A Family Graveside Service was held on Monday, July 24, 2017 at 2:00 pm from the Medstead Lutheran Cemetery, Medstead, Saskatchewan with Peter Martens officiating. Honorary Pallbearers were considered all of Jim’s friends. Pallbearers were Kyle Johnson, Michael Dunk, David Dunk, Chet Sargeant, Cody Francon and Andru Syvertsen. Following the Family Graveside Service, family and friends gathered at the Medstead Community Hall where Terri Martens lead a Celebration of Life Service followed by a time for lunch and fellowship. Memorial Donations may be made to the Medstead Housing Authority or to the Battlefords Union Hospital Foundation in Memory of Jim Johnson as tokens of remembrance. LAZAROWICH: September 2, 1928 – July 15, 2017. Born in Borden, passed away in North Battleford. Sally worked for the Bank of Montreal from 1947 to 1983 and retired as an Administration Manager. It was a job she enjoyed and did very well. She was a lifetime member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada, North Battleford Branch. She worked tirelessly for the church she loved in many capacities. She kept true to Ukrainian Traditions for Christmas and Easter all her life. Sally was predeceased by her parents Yurko and Anna Belyk, Her husband Taras (Ted), brothers John, Fred, Peter, Dmytro, Mike and Bill, sisters Dorothy, Pearl, Mary, Minnie(Lena), step-sisters Ann Fish and Sally Tarasoff. Nephews, Orest Belyk, David Chomitski, Wilfred Chomitski, Alan Kindrachuk, nieces, Gloria Chomitski, Olive Oleksin and Diane Lee. She is survived by nephews and nieces, Alvin and Gail Welychko, Marg Hawkins, Jerry and Lynn Gramiak, Doug Belyk, Marilyn and Harold Nesbit, Maurice and Zane Bahrey, Gene and Adele Belyk, Dennis Belyk, Eileen Erb, Darlene Kindrachuk, Joanne Steinke, Wally and Linda Chomitski, Joy Belyk, Lee Desjardins and all of their families.

Card of Thanks On behalf of Sally, we would like to thank friends and family who came to visit her in hospital and when she was still at home, those who could not come but phoned and sent their well wishes and love via email. A special thank you to Dr, Johnson who treated her for many years and was like a friend to her. Thank you to Very Rev. Bohdan Demczuk for his hospital visits, comforting words and the prayers and funeral service. Thank you to cantor Jim Shevchuk, Altar Server John Sendecki and the choir members. Thank you to Robert MacKay of Battlefords Funeral Service for his friendship with Sally for many years and looking after her so well for her final journey, so very much appreciated. To the ladies of the church for all their hard work preparing lunch for the prayers and service, for the Honour Guard and most of all for their friendship with Sally and to Tracey Mamprin for the Kulachi, thank you so much. Lastly, a big thank you to the Godchildren, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins who attended from so far away.

Another thank you to Iris Reiter from the Condo who helped Sally so many times, to Gary and Lin who did many favors for her.

Centennial celebration for Lady Minto facilities Submitted Lady Minto Health Care Center (LMHCC) in Edam will be the scene Aug. 2 of celebrations to mark the 100th anniversary of the very first Lady Minto hospital in the community.

“The management and staff of Lady Minto HCC couldn’t let this remarkable anniversary pass without recognizing our history in a special way,” said lifelong Edam resident and LMHCC recreation Coordinator Lynette La Clare.

“We are very proud of our facility’s history, right back to the first Lady Minto Hospital that served the community for 50 years – from 1917 to 1967. A new Lady Minto Union Hospital was built in Edam in the 1960s and was the home of local health care services for 25 years, from 1967 until 1992. In 1992, the Union Hospital was replaced by the new Lady Minto Health Care Center which is itself 25 years old this year,” explained La Clare.

The Aug. 2nd celebrations commemorate all three Lady Minto facilities that respectively have been central to the community for the past century. Each has its own unique story, beginning with vibrant and determined community members intent on addressing the health care needs of their fellow Edam and area citizens, and a benevolent woman committed to the building of cottage hospitals in remote areas across Canada.

The original Lady Minto Hospital in Edam was officially opened in February 1917 – the first hospital north of North Battleford.

The project was initiated by local and area residents following the departure in early 1915 of Edam’s lone physician to serve in World War I. Residents and settlers in the area were determined to secure the services of another physician and believed that a hospital was urgently needed.

Following numerous meetings, the Rural Municipalities of Turtle River and Parkdale, and the Village of Edam entered into an agreement to build, equip, maintain and operate a hospital in Edam. Costs were shared according to a

set formula and ratepayers in the municipalities readily supported the proposed tax levies.

The project was also supported by a $3,000 loan from the Lady Minto Cottage Hospital Fund, a benevolent organization instituted by Lady Mary Caroline Grey, 4th Countess of Minto (Lady Minto), wife of Gilbert John Murray Kynynmound Elliot (4th Earl of Minto), Governor-General of Canada from 1898 – 1904. The fund supported the building of cottage hospitals in remote districts across Canada. Cottage hospitals were small rural buildings with several care beds to provide health services at the local level by a local physician so that people didn’t have to travel great distances to larger centres for emergency and everyday care.

The loan came on the condition that nurses of the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) be hired for the Edam hospital. Lady Minto was an honourary president of the VON. A shortage of VON nurses eventually negated the requirement and the money remained with the hospital as a gift.

Edam’s Lady Minto Hospital was one of 43 established in communities and isolated areas across Canada. Each was named after Lady Minto with only a small number – including one in Cochrane, Ontario and on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia - retaining the Lady Minto name to the present day.

Lady Minto lived in Canada during her husband’s tenure as Canada’s eight Governor General from 1898 to 1904. She visited Western Canada in 1901. Lord Minto also travelled throughout the country, in particular visiting former locations where he had served as an Aidede-camp to General Frederick Middleton during the North West Rebellion.

Some of those sites were in what would later become Saskatchewan.

The Edam hospital was designed by W. H. Evans, architect, of Saskatoon and contracted to A. Gigot of North Battleford. Research suggests

that the Edam hospital was designed by the same architect who designed the Carnegie Library in North Battleford, now the Allen Sapp Gallery. Construction of Edam’s Lady Minto Hospital began in 1916 and was completed in February 1917.

Just prior to operation, in January 1917, the Provisional Board responsible for the new hospital was notified by letter from the Province of Saskatchewan that the Board’s plan to operate the hospital with tax dollars was not in accordance with the law and regulations of the Department of Public Health.

The Board was advised that as the law stood at the time, municipal and union hospitals could be built, equipped and maintained with tax dollars, but could not be operated with tax money.

Provisional Board members and local municipal representatives quickly sent a delegation to Regina “with instructions to stay there till they had obtained a change in the existing law” (P.W. Farnsworth, secretary-treasurer, Provisional Board) making legal what the Board was doing and what it proposed to do to operate the hospital. In an article written by Mr. Farnsworth in 1967, he noted that the “delegation came back from Regina with a special act of the legislature, legalizing what we had done and allowing us to levy up to four mills throughout the hospital area for operating costs.

The act is known as “The Lady Minto Union Hospital Act at Edam”, 1917.”

Lady Minto Hospital in Edam opened in February 1917. Farnsworth believed that it was the first hospital in Saskatchewan to provide so-called “free” hospitalization, paid for via local tax levies rather than by individual users.

Fast action averts spread of fire started by baler

Sympathy goes out to Dorothy Beblow of Sonningdale and family on the recent passing of Paul Beblow in the Biggar hospital. Paul farmed in the Sonningdale area. He was 76 years old.

An unexpected fast moving fire took place recently in the Willowmoore area. A farmer was baling hay when the baler caught fire, to be burnt, plus other

aljennie bales and part of the hay field before it was under control. With the fast action and a tank of water close by, neighbours were able to get the fire under control before it got off the hay field into the heavy dry bushes and trees.

bushes did not do too well as the cold frosty spring nights froze most of the blossoms. They could be found in a few sheltered areas, but there were not too many of them about.

Most of the province is experiencing extra extreme heat weather-wise to break some records from past years. At least the nights do chill off nicely. Rapidly moving clouds with thunder and lightning strikes and some quick little showers have been about.

There have been several reports of tornadoes touching down in various areas, mostly in fields, not to do much damage to buildings.

So when these storms are about it pays to keep an eye on the sky and get into shelter before it really gets nasty. Some winds are very strong. When it does rain it just pours, but not too long.

Even the sandy ground potholes fill up fast, but soon all soaks away into the dry sand and soil.

Is it helping or paying for physical torture?

“It is the dog days of summer here,” I told Ed, my old neighbour, when he called yesterday.

The hottest most uncomfortable part of summer has hit us here in B.C. which I call the dog days of summer.

In ancient times, the ‘Dog Days’ of summer were blamed for not only excessive heat but also for drought, sudden thunderstorms, fever, bad luck, war, and catastrophe.

It has been my uncomfortable days, not only because of the heat, but because I have been taking physiotherapy on my knees.

My physiotherapist doesn’t seem to under-

stand that I am old.

My fear is that he has not learned that if something is stiff and you bend it enough, it will break.

My young and eager therapist has decided that my one knee is stiff and he is going to make it flexible in a few sessions.

Every session he is bending my stiff knee while asking me to tell him how much it hurts on a scale between 0 and 10.

He won’t believe me when I say a five or six.

He has told me that I have no awareness of the pain scale as 6 or 7 is enough pain to be hospitalized.

He said he would

come out to Chilliwack when the harvest is done, and bend my sore knee for me for half the price I’m paying the physiotherapist.

I passed on his offer.

I can stay home and bend my sore knee myself for no cost, and not argue with myself on how much it hurts me.

In the Bible, it is easy

to understand why Jesus was so sought after as a healer as well as a teacher or rabbi. There wasn’t much help for the sick and crippled in the time of Jesus, especially no hospitals or physiotherapists.

The way Jesus completely healed and helped people on the spot was amazing.

The physical healings that Jesus did were meant to be evidence of who he was – the very Son of God full of compassion and goodness ready to help people in their mind, body, and soul.

Once when Jesus was preaching, the house he was teaching in was full of people. A para-

lytic man on a mat was brought by four men so Jesus could heal him.

They could not get the man to Jesus because of the crowd. The men took the paralyzed man to the roof, opened the roof and lowered the man on his mat down before Jesus. Jesus said to the paralytic, “Son your sins are forgiven.” Some other teachers there thought that only God could forgive sins and Jesus is not God. Therefore, Jesus said to the paralytic, “Take up your mat and go home.” The cured paralytic got up and went home because Jesus had the authority to heal both the body and the soul as the Son of God.
