Big Birthday for Centennial Quilt

When Canada celebrated its last big birthday day, its centennial in 1967, North Battleford resident Yvonne Chaille made this quilt from 12 inch embroidered squares she requested from fellow Western Producer readers, and shared squares of her own with other quilters, as an Expo 67 project. Now that Canada is turning 150, this quilt is celebrating its 50th birthday and Chaille brought it down to our office to share with our readers.

Conservative leader race: Most candidates in Canadian history

Expect a long day of counting in the leadership vote

This weekend is surely one to watch for political junkies across Canada, as the Conservatives finally get down to the business of selecting their next federal leader.

It has certainly been a long and drawn out process to get to this point. What has been notable about it all is that it has been such a wide open race, with so many candidates in the field.

Never in Canadian history have there been so many candidates running for the leadership of any party. A total of 13 candidates are still officially in the race going into this weekend, and that total does not include the three official candidates who have dropped out (one of whom, Kevin O’Leary, is still on the ballot), or the few others who said they were running but didn’t get officially registered.

Some will say it has not been the most compelling race ever, and there are reasons for that. The main one is what’s gone on in Alberta of late.

The Alberta PCs were consumed with their own high-profile leadership race at the same time that the federal race has been going on. Plenty of Tories in Alberta were working hard to get former federal MP Jason Kenney elected as leader, with Kenney running on a somewhat contentious pledge to try and unite both the PCs and the Wildrose parties into a single alternative to the governing NDP. Last week, both Kenney and Wildrose leader Brian Jean announced plans to form a single entity, the “United Conservative Party.” Members now have to approve that deal.

ohn Cairns News Watch newsoptimist.john@sasktel.net The bottom line is the main focus of Tories in Alberta right now has been on the provincial scene, not so much the federal one. This PC-Wildrose merger business has stolen much of the thunder from federal Conservatives in that province.

The other thing that overshadowed this whole race has been what has gone on down in the United States, with the maniacal Donald Trump winning the White House.

Since his shocking victory in November, all the media attention in Canada that should have gone to the Tories has gone to Trump instead. He has given the press no shortage of things to cover, with his outrageous rants directed at the “fake news” media.

The Tories’ leadership battle looks dull and boring compared to this guy.

Now, people have tried to find a “Trump” angle to this Conservative race by focusing on the campaigns of Kellie Leitch and her “Canadian values” test of potential immigrants, as well as “reality TV star” Kevin O’Leary. The thinking was that these two might lead the way in a “populist uprising” in the party.

The problem is we’re still waiting for this “populist uprising” to transpire.

Leitch’s campaign went straight downhill from the moment O’Leary entered

the race. As for O’Leary himself, the high point of his campaign was the day he entered.

Yes, O’Leary had the name recognition, but Conservatives simply never warmed up to him as a candidate. O’Leary himself looked disinterested, skipping any number of all-candidates debates.

Not long ago, O’Leary threw in the towel and endorsed Maxime Bernier for the leadership. Afterwards, the story in the National Post from John Ivison ran under the headline: “Kevin O’Leary is out? Mr. Wonderful was barely in.”

As we get closer to Saturday and the counting of the ballots, we now have a clearer sense of where things stand in the race.

No doubt about it, Maxime Bernier is the clear front runner now that O’Leary is out of the way. That’s what the fundraising is telling us, and more importantly, so is the polling.

The polling is pointing to first-ballot strength for Bernier to roughly be somewhere in the 30 per cent range. The difficulty is in knowing how many signed-up members of the party bothered to send in their votes.

My guess is that Bernier should have one of the better get-out-the-vote organizations of all the campaigns. If he can get over 30 per cent, he’ll be in

great shape to pick up second-and-third-choice votes as the count goes on. But watch out if Bernier is way under 30 per cent, because he could be caught in that scenario.

Ultimately, it looks like it will come down to a battle between Bernier and… somebody else. A good portion of the balloting is going to be spent determining which, or whether, a candidate emerges to face him in a final ballot showdown.

Right now, I believe Saskatchewan’s Andrew Scheer is probably in second place, based on the polling. Also, the thinking is that the Erin O’Toole campaign may now have risen up to third place.

The question is, how close are Scheer and O’Toole going to be on the first ballot? If O’Toole’s vote total on the first ballot is anywhere close to where Scheer is, or even ahead

of where Scheer is, then Scheer could be in trouble.

Also keep an eye on how many votes the social conservatives in the race are getting: folks like Pierre Lemieux and Brad Trost. If they get a significant chunk of votes, that could be good news for Scheer in the later ballots, because a lot of social conservatives are likely to go to Scheer.

The other top tier candidates include Michael Chong, Lisa Raitt and Kellie Leitch, but I think these three all have a tough hill to climb in terms of second and third choice support. Leitch in particular was thrown a lifeline when O’Leary dropped out; a lot of his supporters will probably vote for her now, if they don’t vote for Bernier.

Summing it up, Bernier is the man to beat. Getting over the finish line, though, is likely going to take a long time.

What I expect to see

Saturday is the longest leadership convention in Canadian history, with a record likely to be set for the most rounds of balloting ever recorded. The current record at the federal level is five ballots, from the 1967 PC convention that elected Robert Stanfield. This Conservative count is likely to go way longer than that, simply based on the number of candidates.

Moreover, they are going to be counting votes from ridings all over Canada, and a lot of them.

You political junkies might want to head to the local supermarket and stock up on popcorn and snack items, in time for a big weekend watching leadership convention coverage on TV. Make sure you’ll have plenty of coffee on hand, too, because you’ll need it Saturday while waiting for the final results.

Busy long weekend for Battlefords RCMP Staff Battlefords RCMP are reporting a busy Victoria Day long weekend, with 331 calls for service including 81 driving-related investigations.

According to their news release, charges included but are not limited to the following: Six motor vehicle collisions, no major injuries; 56 tickets for driving infractions; Seven dangerous driving investigations; 12 impaired driving investigations

Battlefords RCMP is again reminding people to slow down and not to drink and drive. As well, they note it is again the time of

year when people are out enjoying the weather. They are urging people to slow down, drive safe and plan a safe ride home if drinking.

Sharps pickup reported in liquor store lot Staff North Battleford Fire is reporting a sharps pickup on the 1100 block of 101st Street.

That is the location of the parking lot of the liquor

store, where the fire department located a needle on the ground around 9:34 a.m. Tuesday, May 23.

Four fire personnel were on the scene to safely pick up and dispose of the needle from the area.

Are you at risk?

By Cam Dahl, President of Cereals Canada Should GM be labeled? Is organic healthier? Does glyphosate cause cancer? Do you put your kids at risk if you feed them meat or is the cave-man diet the way to go? Your good friend and neighbor thinks Gwyneth Paltrow is right about all this stuff, is she correct?

All of these questions, and a few conspiracy theories, flood Twitter, Facebook and every other social media tool. Celebrities are using “food fear” to promote themselves, their latest book and their latest lifestyle products.

It is a deluge of information and misinformation. What should consumers really believe? What should we think about when we are filling our grocery basket?

I would like to boil this down to two words; “hazard” and “risk”.

It is possible that a meteorite will fall on your head (mine too) in the next ten minutes. This is a hazard. But should this hazard dictate what we do every day? Do we need to retreat to a concrete bunker because of the meteorite threat? Some might say that this is an absurd example, but it is just as real, and more likely, as most of the “food fears” that social media is pumping out every day.

We practically deal with hazards every day. How we deal with them are determined by (a) the likelihood that something will occur and (b) what can be done to mitigate trouble. The probability of that meteorite hitting either of us on the head is infinitesimally small (but it is not zero). There is almost no risk so we don’t have to change our life. Crossing the street is a hazardous operation, but we can mitigate this by looking both ways for traffic.

The same principles apply to our food. Everything can be a hazard. Drink a lot of water too fast and your electrolyte balance will be upset and you will die. This is a hazard, but not much of a risk because the problem can be easily avoided. Feed a rat nothing but raw potatoes for its entire life and it might develop tumours. This shows a hazard, but it is not a complete assessment of risk and does not mean that we need to stop eating potatoes.

The World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has assigned the hazard classification “probably carcinogenic to humans” seventy-nine times, including to shift work, hot beverages, and glyphosate. But we need to remember that “hazard” is only one part of the equation. When we assess risk in our daily lives we must also consider probability (or exposure) and the ability to take mitigating action.

It is the job of Health Canada regulators to look beyond potential hazard (we would all be in bunkers if they did not) and protect Canadians through comprehensive science-based risk assessments of food ingredients, food processing and the inputs farmers use to grow our crops, fruits, and vegetables.

The Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA, part of Health Canada) employs over 350 scientists whose sole purpose is to conduct evaluations of new and existing insecticides, fungicides and herbicides. A product must go through over 200 different health and environmental studies before approval is given for use.

The risk, not just the hazards, are fully assessed.

Glyphosate provides a good example of the way we can sort through the difference between information and

misinformation. Glyphosate is the world’s most commonly used pesticide, which might explain why it is a common target for those who want to jettison modern agricultural practices. How do consumers decide who to believe, the farmer who says it is safe or the activist who wants it banned?

Recently the PMRA released its re-evaluation of the safety of glyphosate. The work was carried out over seven years and was extensive, including review and incorporation of more than 450 peer-reviewed, published scientific studies.

The PMRA has issued unequivocal findings stating that products containing glyphosate are unlikely to affect your health (when used according to label directions). The Agency went further, explaining that a hazard classification, such as the one issued by IRAC, is not a health risk assessment. The level of human exposure,

which determines the actual risk, must also be taken into account.

What’s more, on April 12th the Canadian Food inspection Agency (CFIA) released a report on the testing of Canadian food for glyphosate residues. Testing foods for residues is a tool used by the CFIA to detect food safety risks and ensure that the food supply is safe. The CFIA’s report, appropriately titled “Safeguarding with Science”, reported, “no human health concerns were identified.”

Canadian pesticide registration and food safety regulations are designed to scientifically assess risks to Canadians’ heath. Pesticides are registered for use in Canada only if the level of exposure to Canadians does not cause any harmful effects, including cancer. The work done by Health Canada helps us sort through the conflicting “facts” coming at us from all sides.

STC loss will impact women Dear Editor Women in Saskatchewan will be irreparably harmed by the Wall government’s decision to get rid of STC. Safe, affordable public transportation is necessary to ensure the unhindered and independent movement of women in this province. When pursuing education, seeking employment, raising children alone, providing caregiver services within their families or escaping abusive relationships, women are in grave danger without it. This is especially true for women living in rural and remote parts of our province.

The “Highway of Tears” in British Columbia has been linked to a lack of safe public transportation. Women and girls resorted to hitch hiking and predators moved in. Which highway in Saskatchewan will become our “Highway of Tears” following the loss of STC? Or will it be all our highways?

Elderly women are placed in desperate situations with the loss of STC. Saskatchewan has a high proportion of seniors living outside of our cities. Thirty-five per

When, oh when, will we care about space again?

The documentary Mission Control: The Unsung Heroes of Apollo, is now available in theatres and on demand. That’s what a Facebook ad told me as I sat down to type this column.

That’s quite interesting, since earlier in the day as I folded clothes, I listened to the audio book of A Man on the Moon: The Voyages of the Apollo Astronauts,

by Andrew Chaikin. I’m still early in the book, and just got through the part where Apollo 8 made mankind’s first venture to lunar orbit.

This book comes on the heels of Failure Is Not an Option, by Gene Kranz. Kranz was a key member of mission control in the early days of space exploration. In the movie Apollo 13, he’s played by Ed Harris. He’s one of the key players featured in Mission Control. It’s hard not to notice that the people in that documentary are, well, very old.

And as I crawled out of bed this holiday weekend, my son was watching The Martian, the recent sci-fi

part of Apollo 17, the last manned mission to the moon, and technically the second last man to walk on it. That’s semantics, really, since it’s just the order of who scaled the ladder last to get into the lunar module.

As a geology conference, attracting him was quite a score. For me, meeting Schmitt was on par with meeting Donald Trump. Maybe higher, upon reflection. Trump didn’t walk on the moon.

But along the lines of Kranz being old, the astronauts he helped get to the moon are also old. And of the 12 who actually landed, half are now dead.

Catholic education speaker addresses new direction from different hemisphere

This week marked World Catholic Education Week. As part of the events, staff at Light of Christ School Division gathered Tuesday for Faith Development Day. During that day, staff heard from Sister Clare Fitzgerald, a prominent Catholic speaker who has lectured and presented on Catholic education around the world. The native Bostonian holds four doctorates – three of them honor-

ary.

Her message to those at JPII on Tuesday morning was wide-ranging. She pointed to the importance of Catholic education.

“We as Catholic educators educate our students, whether it be maths, and sciences, through the lenses of our Catholicism and our Catholic faith.”

Fitzgerald also pointed to the words of a German theologian who had said “we are summoned by the events of our time to perform the tasks that God has assigned for our time.”

Her main theme focused on “Catholic education in the age of Francis – How do we navigate in winds blowing from the Southern Hemisphere.”

Fitzgerald was referring to Pope Francis, a Jesuit from Argentina, and the implications of his historic ascension to the papacy.

“Two thousand and some years, we are led by Europeans in the papacy.

And all of a sudden, in our time … we suddenly get somebody from another hemisphere, but not from the United States and not Canada,” said Fitzgerald.

“How does the Vatican, how does the Catholic church, how do we as Catholic educators navigate when you’ve got somebody in the Papacy who comes for the first time in our history of our Church, not from Europe but from the Southern hemisphere,” she said.

“That’s what our situation is right now. He has put us in an absolutely new direction of Catholicism.”

More events were scheduled for later on in the week. On Thursday, a division-wide mass was scheduled at the Civic Centre beginning at 10:30 a.m., celebrated by Bishop Albert Thevenot. Scheduled for the afternoon, CatChat was to entertain elementary students at the Civic Centre, while Pure Witness was to entertain high school students with a concert and rally at JPII in the gymnasium.

in the books I’ve been listening to was President John F. Kennedy’s 1961 invocation to reach the moon before the end of the decade, not because it was easy, because it was hard.

His words were inspirational to, well, everyone, it seems. But once that was accomplished, it seems like things just went downhill, especially the impetus to actually get it done.

The space shuttle program has come and gone, and all the remaining shuttles are now museum pieces.

The new Orion spacecraft, meant to bring Americans (and hopefully a few Canadians) back into space, looks an awful lot like Apollo, except that it’s over 40 years late. On May 12, NASA announced it intends to launch the

Orion in Exploration Mission-1 (EM-1), but will be doing so without a crew.

Oh, and it now won’t happen until 2019. The last flight of the space shuttle took place in 2011, but, hey, there’s no rush here.

Elon Musk keeps trying to land rockets for their eventual re-use. Various ventures are trying to commercialize space travel. Musk wants to send people to Mars, eventu-

ally. Given how slow NASA have become, let’s hope Musk leaves them in the dust.

Here’s what I don’t get – why is this so hard?

Compared to what it took to get the Apollo program together, when every mission had to figure out some set of unknowns, we’ve been going to space for a long time now. Most of the unknowns are now known.

There’s more computing power in my office than in all of NASA in the 1960s. It’s common to have CNC machining capabilities now in most machine shops. There is so much we can do now that is far beyond what was “space age” back then. So why don’t we just do it?

The Space Launch System, which carries the Orion, is NASA’s project to get back in the game.

Canada’s training its newest class of astronauts.

Whether any of them will actually fly or not is another story.

I’m not holding my breath.

Youth Rising to the Challenge

Thursday night last week at the Chapel Gallery in North Battleford was the culminating event of a project at schools in Living Sky School Division entitled Youth Rising, a project modelled on the One Billion Rising Campaign, in which students learn about the prevalence of interpersonal violence and take a stand against it. The event Thursday included the screening of the video Rising Together, compiled from footage taken May 2 involving students of Bready and Battleford Central School at their schools and on Main Street in Battleford. Also included in the presentation was the Families Rising video produced by Kids First Battleford, as well as the Kids Rising Art Project put on by the Battlefords Boys and Girls Club.

Parenting Together Offered in partnership with the Knights of Columbus Charitable Foundation.

Evidence based parenting programs specifically for families in high risk circumstances.

“The STEP (Systematic Tr a i n i n g f o r E f f e c t i v e Parenting) course has taught me a better way to communicate with my children and my spouse.

Rather than always demanding and yelling, I know now how to take a moment and think about how the other person feels and find the right approach to take.”

Family Violence Outreach Program In partnership with the Ministry of Justice. The Family Violence Outreach Program provides protection, intervention and therapeutic support services to victims of violence and those at risk of violence. Support is provided in the form of professional counselling, group programming, safety planning, advocacy and referral.

Resiliency: Beyond the Hurt This is an ongoing drop-in group that covers a number of topics related to trauma and family violence. Topics include healthy and unhealthy relationships, grief and loss, self-esteem, conflict resolution and effective communication, the importance of self-care, supplemental information on safety planning, and much more. Registration prior to attendance is mandatory.

Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m.

Children Exposed to Interpersonal Violence Program Offered in partnership with the Ministry of Justice. This program offers prevention, intervention, and therapy in the form of counselling, group support and educational presentations. This program is for children and youth who are or have been exposed to violence which may include: bullying, dating violence, sibling violence, or family violence. The program is aimed at providing children, youth, and their families with the knowledge and skills to prevent violence and to address the immediate and long term effects of violence.

Relationships That Rock This group explores dating relationships, those with parents, friends, teachers, bosses, etc. We will discuss the differences between healthy and unhealthy relationships and identify various forms of violence.

Participants will look at how self-esteem, self-image, personal boundaries and feelings are linked to our relationships.

The group will learn effective communication, conflict resolution skills and how to identify an appropriate support system.

Violence Intervention - VIP Group

This Violence Intervention Group is presented by topic areas based on the specific needs of the youth in the group.

Topics include: • Safety planning • Boundaries • Support Systems • Drug and alcohol abuse • Types of abuse/violence • Communication skills • Coping strategies • Healthy expression of feelings Group content is always modified to be age appropriate.

School Based Services In partnership with the Light of Christ Roman Catholic Separate School Division #16, Diocese of Prince Albert, and the Catholic Community, School Based Services offers support services to children (and their families) facing challenges that interfere with the child’s ability to learn and experience school in a positive manner. Support is provided in the form of counselling, group programming, referral and advocacy. Services are both preventative and interventative. Common areas of difficulty are not limited to, but may include: bullying, grief, coping with parents’ separation/ divorce or exposure to domestic violence. If you are interested in services please contact the school principal or one of our School Counsellors.

Family Support Services Program Offered in partnership with the Ministry of Social Services.

The Family Support Services Program is a home-based service focusing on the healthy development of families and children. The priority of the program is to ensure the safety of children. The goal is to maintain the family unit or support the healthy reunification of children with their families, whenever it is possible, and only when it is safe. Support services concentrate on parenting, daily living skills, personal wellness and community resources.

Family Preservation Program Offered in partnership with

the Ministry of Social Services.

The objective of the Family Preservation Program is to provide direct, intensive support services to individuals and families whose children would otherwise require immediate out-of-home placement to ensure their safety and protection.

“I am extremely thankful and grateful for the Family Preservation Program. They have helped me educate myself on how to communicate better with my family. They gave me the tools to help with my personal wellbeing and mental health. I would strongly recommend this program to any family.”

Description Services provided are intensive, short term interventions. The objective is to have children remain safely in the parental home while work is carried out which will move the family toward adequate, independent functioning.

Transition Skills Training Program Offered in partnership with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Social Services. The objective of the Transition Skills Training Program is to assist youth to improve life skills which will better prepare them for successful independence in the community.

TST is for youth ages 12-15 and 16-19. The focus of TST is to help youth learn skills that will assist them in their transition to independence and enable them to make positive decisions in this pivotal and critical period of their lives.

Module I - Surviving Day to Day Module II (Work Placement) - Employment Preparation Module III - Self Reflection Module IV - Building Healthy Communities Family Conferencing Program Offered in partnership with the Ministry of Social Services. Using a family centered approach, this program offers Family Capacity Building Conferences and Family Case Conferences to facilitate short and long term planning, in a timely manner, for children and youth in need of protection.

Supportive Independent Living Program Offered in partnership with

the Ministry of Social Services, Community Living Service Delivery, Disability Program.

The SIL Program provides assistance to people with intellectual disabilities so they can live independently and be participating members of the community. Support may include: planning and/or preparation of meals, cleaning and managing a home, making effective use of leisure time, utilizing community resources, budgeting, shopping and managing money.

Support services also assist the individual to establish a support network within the community.

Parent Education Program Offered in partnership with the Ministry of Justice - Family Justice Services.

Separation/Divorce Information Sessions We offer public information sessions on separation and divorce to help people who are considering or may be involved in the separation/ divorce process.

Topics of Discussion: Stages of Separation and Divorce, Options for Resolving Disputes, Children’s Reaction to Separation/Divorce, Parenting After Separation/Divorce “This program gave me reflection on some of my damaging behaviors, hurting my children was never my intention but I saw several examples of it happening without even realizing it!”

Critical Incident Group Debriefing Trained staff facilitate supportive crises intervention, for small homogenous groups, who have encountered a traumatic event. Additional crises support services are available, which may include individual crises intervention, follow up services, counselling or referral for other professional care.

Wellness & Professional Development Presentations and interactive workshops or retreats can be tailored to meet the needs of your members or employees addressing areas such as: • Family Violence • Exposure to Violence Effects on Children • Team Building • Self Care

• Work and Family Balance • Separation and Divorce - Impact on Children and Coparenting • Others are available, if you are interested please contact Catholic Family Services Support Groups and Special Events Catholic Family Services assists the community in the development and in some cases, the facilitation of support groups. We may offer group support in areas such as: family violence, grief/loss and disordered eating.

Candlelight Service for Bereaved Parents The loss of a child can be particularly difficult to cope with during the holidays.

Whether your loss is recent or not, keeping your loved one’s life and memory a part of your Christmas celebration, can help to cope with the pain this season so often brings. The candlelight service is nondenominational.

Everyone is experiencing this loss is welcome. The evening will include selected readings and tributes; thoughts on coping with the holidays and a memorial candle for each family to take home. A memory table will be available if you would like to display a picture or another special memory of your child(ren).

The candlelight service is held annually in December, in partnership with the Territorial Drive Alliance Church.

Mayor’s letter to premier gets a response

Mayor Ryan Bater has gotten a response back from his correspondence to Premier Brad Wall on the provincial budget cuts.

But there was nothing earth-shattering about the response from the premier, who has referred the issue to the ministry of governmental relations.

Bater had written the premier following the April 24 meeting of council, proposing a “policy alternative” to the loss of SaskPower and SaskEnergy payments in lieu in the provincial budget. The city proposed a one per cent surcharge be placed

on SaskPower and SaskEnergy bills in the province.

But in his response to the mayor dated May 9, which was received at council’s Monday night meeting, Premier Wall stated that “in order to better assist you, I have referred your email to the Honourable Donna Harpauer, Minister of Government Relations.

The Minister or one of her officials will respond to you directly.”

There was no word at the meeting whether the city had in fact been in direct contact with Harpauer or her officials.

Last Thursday at noon hour was the annual Public Works Barbecue, hosted by the City of North Battleford at their public works shop. The event was a chance for staff to celebrate the upcoming National Public Works Week, which takes place May 21-27.

Arnold and Helmay Loewen: Music is in their soul I have known Arnold and Helmay Loewen for many years. Back in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, Arnold (referred to as “Arnie” by many of his friends) cut my hair (he’s now retired). Helmay was his assistant.

I also recall playing for their daughter’s wedding with my band in 1987. But what I did not know was that this husband and wife team were very good musicians.

Sure, I had watched them play in the annual Agricultural Society fair parades. But playing on the flat deck of a moving vehicle is no test of one’s musical talent.

So, when Arnie and Helmay invited (requested by invitation) me to a Sunday afternoon jam session and dance at the North Battleford Pioneers’ Association hall on Railway Avenue south, I decided to go.

I was pleasantly surprised at the ability of the 15 or so musicians who had donated their time to jam and play for the dance.

Most of the musicians were in their 70’s; some were in their 80’s.

I was quite amazed at the vigor and enthusiasm of the crowd, most of whom were also in their 70’s and 80’s. And, I was particularly impressed with the skill, versatility and vocalization of Helmay and Arnold.

The Loewens are indeed very good musicians.

I met with Helmay and Arnold on Friday, Dec. 9,

Here is their story (as told verbatim by Helmay Loewen): Arnold Loewen (Arnie) was born and grew up in the Robin Hood, Saskatchewan, area. He was the seventh child in a family of 12 (nine boys and three girls). Arnold took his elementary education at the nearest country one-room school (Park Bluff). He later took higher grades to complete his education.

As Arnold’s older siblings moved through the school system and completed their education, they took jobs away from home.

One of his brothers bought a guitar from a friend and brought it home for the younger ones to practice.

Later, another brother brought home a violin.

Arnold picked up the instruments occasionally. He was able to get a squeaky tune out of the violin and a few chords on the guitar.

He also got a harmonica and learned to play it well.

During this time, card parties were in vogue –

a popular community activity held in the schools. After the locals tired of cards, they would dance for awhile and then have lunch. Occasionally, Arnold and his sister, Anne, would play for these impromptu dances – sometimes alone and sometimes with others.

When Arnold finished elementary school, he helped out on the farm until he was 18 and then worked on various jobs away from home. At age 20, he took a job with a shingling and roofing company in Lloydminster. His life was busy so he put music on the back burner until later.

I now turn my attention to Helmay Loewen and her life and musical career.

Helmay Loewen (nee Kildaw) was born to Henry Kildaw and Mary Kildaw (nee Anderson) at Rabbit Lake on Jan. 1, 1942. She was a sister to six older siblings and four younger children – a large family by any measure. Large families were quite common in those days.

Helmay grew up on a small farm where everyone had their chores to do.

Working outside was much preferred to working inside. However, there was much work to be done both outside and inside.

“All of our family members were musical and loved to sing. So, with no other entertainment (no TVs, no friends close by) available, we did a lot of family entertaining (singing and playing instruments). To this day, whenever some of us get together, there is always music. My dad played an awesome harmonica and it was a real treat when he decided to play it. Moreover, when my oldest brother, Ken, left home to work, he brought home an acoustic guitar, and each one of we children learned to play it.

We helped each other. We couldn’t read notes so we played by ear. My older brother, Clarence, taught me most of what I learned.

He was really good at singing and playing the guitar. So we started singing (and adding harmony) too.

Later on, Clarence played with other bands including the Swing Alongs from North Battleford. We sang at house parties, card parties and birthday parties. I (Helmay) enjoyed singing the Kitty Wells and Hank Williams songs, and other songs, that were famous at the time.

“When Arnie and I met, it wasn’t long before we started singing together.

Then after we got married, I moved to Lloydminster where Arnie was working.

We settled down to raise a family of three children (Wendy, Ed and Lorna) who followed in their parents’ footsteps and also became singers. Our children liked the old western music (the same as us, and which we sang and played). Then when the Beach Boys, Beatles and other pop groups became popular, our children’s musical tastes changed. But they still liked some of the old Western songs. I would get them to sit down and and sing with me. One day I realized that Lorna could sing harmony. She still does. And, when Ed was about eight years old, he loved playing hockey, and he would sit

down a n d m a k e up hockey songs.

When Wendy was eight years old, we were invited to join a talent show sponsored by the Nelson Lumber Company Ltd. We sang “Mother, may I” and other songs. We were competing against Lloydminster’s main band, “The Western Aces” and other groups but the Western Aces we came in came in second anyway. Our children and Arnie and I still get together on occasion and do some singing.

In order to be a stayat-home mom, I took in boarders (relatives and friends) and did some baby sitting while the children were growing up. When our youngest, Lorna, started junior high school, I started working at a corner grocery store (North-end grocery). I also started to get more involved in curling at this time. Arnie was also very much into his curling.

Arnold and Helmay Loewen: Music is in their soul Continued from Page 11 When Arnie and I made our move to North Battleford, we continued with curling. And when we sold our house, we donated a large box of trophies to an organization in North Battleford.

While Arnold was working, in his spare time on weekends and holidays, he took his barbering and hair styling course in Edmonton. When he received his certificate, he was able to secure a space on Dec. 7, 1978 in the new Co-op Mall in North Battleford and opened the Hair Loft (men’s and women’s hair styling).

In August of 1979, Arnold and I moved to North Battleford. Along with Arnie, I went to work in the Hair Loft. Arnold owned and operated the Hair Loft until 1993 at which time he sold it.

While still cutting and styling hair, he also started driving school bus. He drove for 17 years.

After selling the Hair Loft, due to customer demand, Arnold started a little shop in the basement of our home which he aptly named, “Arnie’s Hair Den.” He operated the Hair Den until we sold our house and bought a condo.

While cutting and styling hair in the Den, we made a lot of good friends – good solid people. This was where we first met Richard (Rick) Hiebert (He was a faithful client in the shop).

In the 1980’s, we took up old tyme dancing lessons. We really enjoyed these, as well as curling.

In the 1990’s, we rediscovered our music and singing. We hadn’t done much while the family was growing but now we were able to pursue it. Arnie had his violin and harmonica and now he purchased a banjo, mandolin and Dobra guitar. In 2006, Arnie

and fundamentally important part of Arnie’s and Helmay’s lives.

Over the years and decades, their lives have been enriched by their music, and our communities are a better place for it. They have received high praise and many accolades for their music, including

comments like, “two wonderful musicians.”

Arnie and Helmay hope that they will be able to play music for many years to come because it keeps them young and brings joy to others.

Indeed yes, they are known as “The Loewens and Company.”

finally won first prize with his harmonica at the Fiddle and Harmonica Contest held every year at the Western Development Museum.

He worked exceptionally hard at it – practicing – for three years and finally succeeded. What a happy day that was!

Arnie and Helmay are inherently modest people.

They don’t trumpet their popularity and successes.

So it’s up to me. Music, and especially playing music, was and is an integral

Aunt Lindy’s guide to utility tree pruning Aargh, they’re baaaack. The Utility Tree pruners (Whackers) are clearing the lines again.

You know, on Facebook they use a lot of abbreviations (because kids nowadays are way too busy to write) and there is a popular one written as WTF. According to Aunty Linda it simply means, “What the Fandango.”

I’m a Facebook guy so there are occasions when I have used this expletive as well. I usually write it as WTFAL which simply translates to “What the Fandango Aunty Linda.”

Cyber language can spill out into your everyday language, and recently while driving in Battleford, I had a WTFAL moment when I saw that the Utility Tree Whackers had been by to remove offending branches that had the potential of tangling in the lines and causing either a fire hazard or transmission disruption during a storm. When I was working closer to the action, I think the tender specification for the Utility Tree Whackers was that anything within three metres of a transmission line gets whacked and it didn’t matter if the branch was angled away from the line either. There’s no room in tender specifications for subjective decision making.

A couple of things came to mind.

1) You would think that with all the training and certifications available, all the information on the internet and with all the things we know about trees now, that some of that easily available knowledge would rub off on the Util-

I wonder if the utility companies and the owners of the trees that are in the power lines could agree to remove the severely whacked and ugly trees that will be a perpetual problem and perhaps the utility company could provide a voucher to a local garden centre for the purchase of the right tree species for the right place. The utility company would be money ahead in short order.

Tree and utility conflicts, are an age old problem with some simple solutions.

Wins proving elusive for Beavers to start season

With only a handful of players returning from last year’s team, it was expected to be a transitional process for the North Battleford Midget AA Beavers at the start of this campaign.

While the defending provincial champions currently find themselves at the bottom of the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League standings with a 0-12 record, the signs of growth are there for the team.

“We have a really young team here so there’s going to be a bit of a learning experience for them to get adjusted to the jump from bantam ball to the midget level,” Beavers assistant coach Brett Benoit said.

“The pitchers are throwing the ball harder and the veterans are good at throwing the breaking balls, which many of our hitters haven’t seen before.

“We’re also looking to get a couple of more guys pitching on the mound so we can have some more depth there. There’s some positives that we can take out of the weekend here, and we’ll be trying to build off of that in the coming weeks.”

The Beavers will be in a tournament in Saskatoon starting on June 2, before they host the Regina Pacers on June 10 for their last currently scheduled home games of the regular season.

The Humboldt Dodgers were to have visited Beaver Lions Stadium on June 25, but they have elected not to play in the league this year.

It wasn’t quite the performance the Wilkie Brewers had in mind to start off their defence of the North Saskatchewan River Baseball League championship.

In their home opener Tuesday night, the Brewers were unable to claw their way back from an early deficit as they fell 12-1 to the newly formed North Battleford Trappers.

“That’s a young good hitting team over there and they showed what they are capable of tonight,” Brewers player Mike Sittler said.

“For many of us on the roster this is the first time that we’re swinging a bat all season, so we don’t expect too much out of the opener. Our goal was to

get some swings and get some of our pitchers arms strengthened up. It’s early still for us, and we know that we can get better from here.”

The Trappers took control of the game during the top of the third inning, as they rattled off six runs during the frame to take a commanding 7-0 lead.

The Brewers had chances to bring runs home in the later innings, but were unable to close the gap.

“We made some good contact on their pitches but there wasn’t too much good that came out of the game,” Sittler said.

“I think the final score reflects what happened, but we’ll bounce back.”

“The guys had a good tempo to the game,” Trappers coach Michael Hudec said. “The hitting was strong and our pitching was excellent.

“We have young guys on the roster, but we have guys like Mike George and Mike Ross who haven’t played senior ball for awhile that will be key for our team, especially as those new players get used to playing at this level.”

Despite their tough loss to the Trappers, there isn’t much cause for alarm for the Brewers as they prepare to host the Border City Blue Jays next Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

“We’re known as a slow starting team,” Sittler said.

“Once the middle of the season hits, that’s when all of our guys are able to play on a regular basis.

“We should be in good shape after a few more games and a few more atbats.”

The Trappers, meanwhile, will make their debut at Beaver Lions Stadium in North Battleford Thursday night against the visiting Mervin Flyers.

In other action Thursday night, the Macklin Lakers will visit the Edam Blue Sox, the Midwest Expos will take on the Blue Jays, the Standard Hill Lakers will host the the St. Walburg Reds and the North Battleford Beavers will face the Meadow Lake Sox.

The screen has not yet been hung, and you can see the 10 huge speakers that will soon be hidden by the new screen. Every Little Bit Counts ENT capital campaign continues to receive Staff Claudette McGuire, executive director, says Battlefords Union Hospital (BUH) Foundation had a lovely visit recently from delightful five-year-old Ella Grant of Edam, who had a donation for the Every Little Bit Counts capital campaign currently underway.

Parents John and Apryl Grant explained, “As Ella listened to the On Air for Healthcare Radio-thon on Friday May 12 , Ella decided she wanted to help and be able to give something to help the new ears, nose and throat (ENT) surgeon get his equipment. So she decided to set up a lemonade stand at the garage sale we were having the next day. It was very cold and wet out but she stuck with it!”

Good weather for the long weekend was appreciated by everyone as so often they can be cold and wet. The sky was a “mixed bag” as they say, but not to dampen spirits for long.

The golf course was busy and there were several garage sales around town as well as the Plant and Bake Sale at the United/ Anglican Church Saturday morning. There surely are lots of campers in the park and the concession booth is open for meals or treats.

There are several places for sale in the area and some are changing hands and several new homes being built. So you see there’s lots of action here.

The Memorial Service for the late Keith Griffith is set for June 3, 11 a.m. in the Alliance Church in North Battleford.

Gordon Kirk and his family are hosting a Memorial Service for the late Bernice Kirk on May 27 at 2 p.m. in the Meota Community Complex.

Our variety of birds has increased with the arrival of the goldfinches and rose-breasted grosbeaks and humming birds.

A 21-year-old Saskatoon girl, Jade Dulle, is riding her bicycle from Willow Creek through the major cities to the Prince Albert National Park to raise awareness of mental health. This is Mental Health Week in Saskatchewan. She is being followed by her father, who is driving my old motorhome, on loan from a supportive friend in the city. We wish her a good trip.

Stories of ticks being prevalent this year are being heard. A relative in North Battleford is reported to have Lymes’ disease and near Murray Lake a father walked with his son and dog and removed 73 ticks on their return.

News has come of the passing of Anna Garrison of Lloydminster on May 19 at the age of 96. Anna and her husband Doug farmed and raised their family north of Spiritwood, and then had the Glaslyn Hotel for a time. Her funeral will be in the Catholic Church in Spiritwood on May 26 at 1 p.m.

My family home from Alberta over the weekend included Donna and Al Lambert from Leduc, their granddaughter Santana from Beaumont, my son Brad and Kelly from Carstairs and Shari Pearson and Dustin Allen from Lloydminster. The golfers had good games and lots of fun and those that played cards enjoyed that, too.

School races toward close of season

By Corrina Murdoch Correspondent As the school season comes to a close, the highlights of the year come to light. Yearbook season has begun, and orders are being accepted for the publication. Children’s assessments and testing are being prepared, and the end-ofthe-year celebrations are right around the corner.

This season’s green grass and flowers blooming ties in well with the exciting event of Marafun, which is around the corner. Marafun is an affair that takes place in Saskatoon on the afternoon of May 28. While it reaches its peak on May 28, the event itself commenced in March. Participants pledge to walk, run or wheel 40 kilometers over the course of the 10 weeks. The event gives the children a wonderful opportunity to learn about commitment to a goal and the ability to use exercise as both a fun activity and a chance to gain health and well-being.

Some of the running hours are conducted during school time, yet the remainder are the responsibility of the children who have committed to participate. At the culmination of the event, the participating students gather to complete 2.2 kilometers of the marathon track as a group.

Local Medstead Grade 1 student Julia Fevang is just one of many getting excited for the Marafun event. Serving as just one example of how the event promotes self-esteem and determination, the eager participant notes, “It’s lots of fun. I like running. I’m really good at it.”

Marafun will take place just a week prior to the Elementary Track and Field event of June 7, wherein the school facility will host around 450 young students for what is sure to be an energetic event for all involved.

The leaders at Medstead School who facilitate the participation have been diligent in ensuring that the children keep to their goals, and get the full benefit of the engagement.

It is sure to be an exciting endeavour to benefit both first-timers as well as seasoned veterans of the sport of running and marathon fun. A events like this, and Medstead’s efficacious commitment to participation therein, is just another reason to speak out about

edstead News the importance of schools to communities as a whole and to the individuals who comprise them.

Events like this are what draw communities together, foster involvement, team spirit and pride. While the school is focussing on the positives and keeping a strong front for the children, the budget cuts brought forth by the government do threaten to encroach on future events and celebrations akin to those mentioned above.

Principal Schneider notes that “school boards are dealing with millions of dollars in shortfalls from the budget,” and mentions the ways that these cuts appear to fall to the background of public discussion.

Schneider states, “The removal of monies from education will affect the programming of every student in our school and many other schools throughout the province as well.”

Medstead will not be replacing any educational assistants who have resigned or retired. Over 60 positions will be lost in the division encompassing Medstead. Living Sky School Division is dealing with a shortfall of about $6.5 million.

School, and other rural schools like it, strong and engaging for its students.

It is encouraging to see the staff continuing passionately at their work to keep students strong, healthy and involved in both curricular and extra-curricular activities. Schneider states to the public that, “If you are concerned about the sweeping changes to education, then make your voice heard. The library program had its funding replaced due to public outcry. If people are concerned that changes in education will hurt children, then make your voice heard.”

With hopefulness like this, and the proven effect of passionate citizens rallying behind such essential institutions, it is definitely optimistic that the educational system will continue to move forward strongly, and, in so doing, keep participation in events like Marafun alive and well.

Village-wide garage sale in June

Happy Summer. A beautiful long weekend in Maymont, the odd dribble but we were still able to get yard work done, coffee on the deck, maybe even a wiener roast. Hope you all had a good one.

The library had their annual meeting May 16.

Thanks to those who came out. It’s looking good for us keeping our library; the numbers of new customers are up, great news.

Our library also has a book club. For more information give Lynda a call and she will update you on the information. Some of you

A book club is a reading group, usually consisting of a number of people who read and then talk about the same book they are all reading. Books are picked by members of the book club. Some of the book clubs are focused on certain genres like romance or horror, history

or other interesting genre.

Sometimes the book club will only read certain authors or series. Some of the books I found that have been read by book clubs are The Help, The Book Thief, The Nigh Circus, Sarah’s Key and The Girl on the Train. If interested please call Lynda.

The Village of Maymont is having a garage sale June 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Everyone will have their own signage so check down every street to find your way to the treasures. The Maymont Memorial Hall will be selling hamburgers and hot dogs on Main Street. There’s always something the old

hall needs which takes money and the hall members work hard to do what they can to raise money.

The park board at Glenburn would like you to join them the same day but later on in the afternoon June 10. They are celebrating their 50th Anniversary.

Hard to believe the park has been around for 50 years. They will be having a beef on a bun supper, but if you are interested you’ll have to call a board member before the 26th. There will be entertainment (DJ) and also a beer garden. Be great to see you support the Maymont Hall and also Glenburn Park. See you there.

Yield for pedestrians, respect the crosswalk, and wear your helmet According to SGI, Saskatchewan police issued 12 tickets during April’s traffic safety focus on pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

There were: • Seven tickets for drivers failing to yield or stop for pedestrians, or passing a vehicle that is stopped for a pedestrian.

• Four tickets for pedestrians disobeying crosswalk signals, or walking into the path of a vehicle.

• One ticket for a motorcyclist failing to wear a helmet.

In addition, police reported 5,025 speeding/aggressive driving offences, 294 impaired driving-related offences, 320 distracted driving offences (251 of those for cellphone use) and 295 seatbelt/car seat/ booster seat violations in April1.

All you can eat perogies planned June 2

The Borden Community Centre Preservation Committee are holding a Perogie and Ham Supper with salads, desserts and much more on Friday, June 2 in the Community Centre, from 5 to 7 p.m. In preparing for this event, many of the ladies volunteered for a perogie-making bee and, on May 16, made close to 2,100 perogies. You can have all you can eat perogies with all the extras for $12 for adults, $5 for 10 years and under and 3 and under are free. Along with the supper there will be a silent auction and many items are on display at Borden Affinity Credit Union where you can pre-bid on these items. Proceeds for this supper go for improvements in the Borden Community Centre.

Weather permitting, there are free tethered hot air balloon rides in the school yard. There will also be a Kids Zone, slopitch ball all day, steak supper from 5 to 7 p.m., then entertainment by Dukes on Fire from 7 to 9 p.m. A DJ will entertainment from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday is ball, kids activities and the concession and beer gardens are open both days.

The Lions Ride for Dog Guides calvacade is travelling from Saskatoon to Lloydminster and return on June 3, and they will be stopping in Borden at 9:25 a.m. at the sports grounds, for a coffee break and presentations from Borden Lions Club and individuals wishing to make a donation. Celtic Country, made up of Bob Wardhaugh, Ed Neufeld, Archie Wainwright, Perry Nicol and Sean O’Conner, held an open practice in the Borden Senior’s Centre on May 19 and quite a few dropped in to listen, with any donations going to the Lion’s Ride for Dog Guides Helen Sutherland and Ed and Dianne Rawlyk of Borden became greatgrandparents on May 20, when Michael Sutherland and Jill Olzewski of Saskatoon had a baby boy weighing 7 lbs 2 oz, and they named him Kade Owen.

Cut Knife school works with University of Regina on ‘lighter-than-air’ project

James Stone’s Grade 6 class at Cut Knife Elementary achieved something no other school in Canada has done before.

For a project Stone designated “Class Photo at the Edge of Space,” the class worked with the University of Regina to release a weather balloon affixed with a camera and sensors to, first and foremost, snap a class photo, but also to take measurements of temperature, pressure, humidity, carbon dioxide and oxygen levels.

Stone first got the notion to incorporate weather balloons into his instruction a few years ago, after

watching a television program in which a race was held for the balloons. After years of having the idea swirl around in his mind and then last year seeing a school in Colorado take on the challenge, Stone was spurred into action.

“I’ve wanted to do it for years since,” said Stone.

“This year I just wanted to do something different.

Something that I hadn’t done before instead of a field trip … I knew they were a group of students that would benefit from ‘hands-on’ learning, so I decided to take the plunge and go for it.”

Although the class wasn’t initially sold on the idea – with a few still holding out for a customary

field trip – as the planning for the launch came together, the mood of the class turned to anticipation.

“As the parts arrived and they started building things [and] testing them, the excitement has really been building,” said Stone. “[They’ve done] something very few other kids have ever done. That’s a real achievement.”

The lead up to launch day, May 10, was spent fundraising, with the class covering the cost through bake sales, candy grams and canteens. With an expected cost of around $2,000, Stone was pleasantly surprised with a final cost closer to $1,000.

Overall, Stone said, the experience was better than he expected, although it wasn’t without some setbacks.

“The launch was flawless, the recovery went very smoothly, and we got some great pictures back from the camera.

“Unfortunately, the sensors failed shortly after we turned them on. We didn’t find that out until we got the box back, but the instruments we were most interested in, the temperature, pressure, GPS, and altitude all failed to work properly.”

Not accounting for a lesson in adversity, Stone noted that his students were quick studies in looking for the bright side.

“The students have been amazing through this. I’m doing a reflection piece with them today, and reading over shoulders I’m seeing that they really did understand how big and special this project was.

The excitement when we launched, how eagerly they followed the GPS tracker during the morning, and the joy when we recovered was amazing to see.

And this morning when I showed them the video of their picture in space, that was incredible.”

Registration coming for Kindergarten

By MCS Staff The May long weekend has come and gone and students were even treated to an extra long weekend because there was a professional development day for teachers on Tuesday. This was their final PD day of the year and teaching staff were working on their writing goals and evaluating the progress for each goal.

Jean Anne Jackson completed the Living Sky Leadership course this week. Her leadership project was facilitating the school’s writing goals. It was a two-year course looking at the six areas of leadership competencies. Congratulations to Mrs. Jackson on her accomplishments.

The Life Synergy conference was a huge success.

Students received a lot of valuable insight and were given time for small discussion groups. There were about 25 adults in attendance for the evening session.

The Grades 1 through 4 swimming program has started. The students are transported to the Aquatic Center in North Battleford for five Mondays where they receive two hours of swimming instruction.

They are usually a lot quieter on the bus ride home after all that exercise.

The SLC sponsored a Grub Day last week. Students and staff were invited to wear their older, tattered clothing to school. The SLC will be holding an ice cream sundae sale on June 1. It is usually a big hit with everyone.

In preparation for their track and field meet, Mr. Nickell took a group of students to practice running at the track in North Battleford. It is good practice and it was dry, so the runners were able to accelerate at their best speeds.

The elementary students are almost completed the second round of ringette and will soon begin kickball, which is the final sport of the year.

Just a reminder to next year’s kindergarten families that registration takes place at the school on Monday, May 29 from 11 a.m. to noon. It is always exciting to see the fresh new faces!

NSRMHH announces staff changes Submitted by Pat Guenther Administrator The North Saskatchewan River Municipal Health Holdings held their regular meeting on Monday, May 15th.

The NSRMHH board was provided information on the Health Region Transition Team’s progress regarding the transition to one Provincial Health Region. The Region has been named the Saskatchewan Health Authority and the

head office will be in Saskatoon.

The board was informed that NP Kathy Hunker will complete her one-year contract with Prairie North Health Region at the end of May. She will be moving on to Regina and the board and staff wish her well in her new position.

NP Annette Robinson will be returning to work midAugust.

The NSRMHH board members are happy to announce a new member to the team. Nicole Whiting has been hired for the ca-

sual position at the clinics.

Dr. Mpomposhe will be taking some holidays from June 30 to July 9.

As the summer season is very busy for our clinics with our lake residents returning, please book appointments for prescription renewals and other non-urgent appointments two to three weeks ahead.

Illegal dumping unfortunate harbinger of spring Every spring when the snow disappears, we start to see garbage that was covered over the winter.

Regardless of how the garbage got there, it has a negative effect on our environment and our wildlife populations. I can appreciate that sometimes garbage just gets away from you, or a pest gets into a bag and spreads it all over the yard only to be blown away by the wind.

Although not really acceptable, we know it happens. However, what we continue to see is garbage simply being dumped out on private property or along back roads in rural areas.

Garbage is often found beside empty farms or piled up at available garbage receptacles. These are all examples of littering and an offence that conservation officers take seriously. The vast majority of these violations are not by accident. One may be able to explain a garbage bag falling out of the back of a truck, but when you see someone back into an approach and dump a truck load of shingles, or 10 bags of garbage, or worse yet an appliance … the chances of that happening by accident are slim to none.

Back in the day, one would get a littering ticket from an officer, possibly a court appearance and get a

Today, the minimum fine for littering both on water and on land is $580.

Much like distracted driving, seatbelts and speeding, it is a pretty hefty hit to your wallet that can be avoided.

Those who litter do not do it by accident. There was a conscious decision to dump garbage in hope of not getting caught. There are people who dump their garbage out in the country that don’t want to pay the landfill fees. Other times, the landfill is closed and it was too much of a hassle to wait or get a key. I have stopped people after they have littered, and a very common reply once they have been caught is that they will go back and clean it up. But by this time it is too late – they already made the decision to litter. If I had not seen them,

or stopped them, they would not have gone back on their own.

A n o t h e r growing trend is people discarding wildlife parts and hides. This includes coyotes, deer, elk and moose harvested under a licence.

People will get the animal home, de-bone it and, rather than dispose of it properly, simply dump it in an alley or on a rural road.

The thought process is that the scavengers will clean it up, but it is still an eyesore and may bring in unwanted pests and predators to the area.

Some people are very conscientious when they are outdoors. This can be said especially for fishermen. Many times I see people out picking up bait containers, chip bags, beer cans and other garbage that someone left before them. I always thank those people and give them one of our game warden magazines or a SaskTIP fish hook for their extra efforts.

We have to remember that not only does litter have a negative effect on our landscape, but it also has adverse effects on our wildlife populations. Examples include: - Soda can rings can

easily get caught around the neck of wildlife; - Fishing line can get tangled in wildlife; - Plastics can be ingested with discarded food which animals eat; - Discarded partially eaten food provides a nonnatural food source for wildlife; - Soda/beer cans have sharp edges.

Please properly dispose of your trash and help clean up our environment.

Always haul out what you haul in. If you know of someone who is littering, call them on it - or call us, and we will take it from there.

Here are a few questions that have come in over the last few weeks, about

waste, firearms and hunting.

Q: How can I dispose of my old house on the farm? Do I need to demolish it and take it to a landfill?

A: Private landowners still have the option to bury waste from the property, but any hazardous material (paint cans, industrial chemicals, etc.) should be removed prior to doing so.

A landowner may NOT accept waste from other individuals or businesses for disposal on their property.

The ministry encourages landowners to follow the Construction and Demolition Waste Management and Disposal guidance document (available on saskatchewan.ca) which involves segregation of material that can be recycled or reused and final disposal of any material at a proper landfill.

Q: Is it legal for me to carry a .17HMR on my side-by- side (Utility Task Vehicle or UTV) to hunt coyotes or rabbits?

A: Yes, as long as the firearm is unloaded. It is only during the open big game season that you are not allowed to carry a firearm on an ATV in the southern zones.

Q: Is it legal to shoot a porcupine?

A: Porcupine are a protected species under The Wildlife Act. Section 4 of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Regulations shows that rabbits, raccoons, skunks, listed species of birds and a few others are not protected and may be hunted without a licence in approved areas.

You may destroy a porcupine if it is causing damage to property.

MURIE: Peter Murie Jr (Bo) was born August 1st, 1928 in Vancouver, BC to Elizabeth (Bess) and Peter Murie Sr, and passed away peacefully on May 1st, 2017 in North Battleford, SK. Great Grampa Pete will be missed by his son Peter John Murie (Helen), grandson Peter James Murie (Tammy), granddaughter Jennifer Aguiar (Stephen), and great-grandson Dominic; daughter #2 Carol LaGreca (Wayne), grandson Ryan LaGreca (Shelley), greatgrandchildren Jonathan, Bri Amelia, Jade and Allanah; grandson Addin LaGreca (Lisa); daughter #3 Debra Murie (Daryl Parkyn), granddaughters Kea Parkyn and Bryn Parkyn; grandson Tyler Griffith (Nicole), greatgrandchildren Abigail, Bennett and Lachlan; granddaughter Melanie Griffith and great-granddaughter Amaleigh; stepdaughter Renee Benoit Crossman (Chris), granddaughters Kirstin, Marissa, Jenna and Tea; stepson Clay Benoit (Tracy), and grandchildren Cody and Maggi; and his little sister Margaret (Harvey) Hobenshield; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and so many wonderful in-laws, a few outlaws, and his one-eyed jack Levi Jones. Before his passing Peter mourned the loss of his first love Elizabeth Amelia (Dolly) Haugland Murie, his daughter #1 Patricia Irene Murie Griffith (Bob); his great-granddaughter Cassandra Ryan LaGreca, and his second love Lise Larocque Benoit Murie; his parents and three sisters; Catherine Tedesco (Johnny), Doreen Stitt (Gordon) and Audrey Ferroux (Sonny).

Peter was the only boy in the family and went to work at an early age, he left school and helped support his Mom and sisters while his father went back to England to support the WWII war effort. Pete was a jack of all trades and became a master of many; Commercial fisherman, plumber & electrician with his father, gypsy carpenter out of necessity, Red Seal HD Mechanic, respected gunsmith and champion skeet shooter. He loved to go hunting and would go fishing in a minute if someone said the word. Peter was a proud man with a sense of humor, a smart and gentle soul, he often said how proud he is of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, bragging about them whenever he was given the opportunity. In his last few years Peter became reflective and told stories along with showing pictures, he loved the old pictures. Peter couldn’t hardly believe that after 84 years of living only in British Columbia that he ended up living his last 5 years in Saskatchewan, which it turned out he rather liked the big sky and fresh winds, if only there had been an ocean nearby he could have gone back to the sea fishing, it was in his blood. When he went to his happy place it was out on Work Channel, fishing on the BoDolly. Thanks from the family go out to all those that made Dad’s life more comfortable during his final weeks; Dr. E. Hamilton and the nurses at Battlefords Union Hospital, particularly Pritpal and Bev. While our hearts are heavy, June has found her wings. June is survived by her husband Claude Aubin, her daughter Anik, grand children Kristopher and Emanuelle, son Sebastien (Caroline), her mother Ruth, sister Janet, brothers Byron, Bruce and Barry, and numerous extended family members. Notice of Intention to Alter the Boundaries of the Resort Village of Cochin Pursuant to Section 56 of The Municipalities Act, 2005, public notice is hereby given that the Council of the Resort Village of Cochin intends to apply to the Minister of Government Relations to alter its boundary.

The proposed alteration involves adding to the Resort Village and withdrawing from the Rural Municipality of Meota No 464 the lands listed below and shown in bold dashed outline on Sketch “B” that forms part of this notice.

Affected Lands: • That part of the NE 1/4 and SE 1/4 of Section 25, Township 47, Range 17, West of the 3rd Meridian; that part of the SW 1/4 of Section 30, Township 47, Range 16, West of the 3rd Meridian and that part of the NE 1/4 of Section 24, Township 47, Range 17, West of the 3rd Meridian all lying west of the Resort Village of Cochin.

Reason for Alteration:

REASON The reason for the amendment that applies to Map #1 is to accommodate an application from the owner of the property to subdivide this lot and develop two residential buildings on separate titled lots.

The reason for the amendment that applies to Map #2 is to accommodate an application from the owner of the property to subdivide the property into two titled lots for residential use and to amend the setback requirement for accessory buildings in a Residential 2 District so that an existing accessory building complies with the Zoning Bylaw.

The proposed boundary alteration would add the subject lands, including portions of the shoreline and lakebed of Jackfish Lake and Murray Lake that are adjacent to Cochin, to the current boundaries of the Resort Village. The reason the Resort Village is pursuing this boundary alteration is to obtain jurisdictional authority to pass bylaws for the control of shoreland use and development (primarily docks).

Bylaws respecting boat docks, boat lifts, identification of swimming areas, etc. are not proposed as part of this application and would be developed at a future date, in consultation with the community, should this application be successful. A previous annexation application in 2014 was pursued, but ultimately rescinded by Council.

This new annexation application only includes shoreline areas of Jackfish Lake and Murray Lake and does include any assessed improvements or land.

Any person who wishes to object to the proposed alteration may file a written objection with the municipal administrator by mail or by personal delivery, stating clearly their reason for their opposition on or before July 5th, 2017. take omega 3 fatty acids and fish oils in order to make ourselves healthier, but what exactly do these supplements do for us?

According to the National Center for Biotechnology (NCBI), the myelin sheath is around 80 per cent lipid.

These lipids are fats typically provided by the diet because they cannot be produced in our body.

Essential fatty acids, like omega 6 or omega 3, according to livestrong. com need to be consumed either from foods or from supplements, but can positively influence the growth of the myelin sheath.

In a Ted-Ed video by Annie Bosler and Don Greene, mastering any physical skill takes practice, but yet there may be a way to aid those hundreds of hours we put in.

Practice is the repetition of an action with the goal of improvement, often considered learning when a new behaviour is produced. When we learn a new skill, we then perform these tasks with more ease, speed, and confidence.

This is where myelin comes into the picture.

For our bodies to move information, these signals need to travel from our grey matter along axon paths to our muscles. If we’ve ever met someone good at a physical skill, they may have mentioned to us the term muscle memory. According to the Huffington Post, muscle memory is when a once difficult skill becomes second nature, as if conscious control slowly drops out and we perform the physical task with less concentrated effort. This learning is not in our muscles. It is in our head.

Bosler and Greene determined the myelin sheath seemed to be altered with practice and referred to the myelin coating as similar

to insulation on electrical cables. It prevents energy loss when these electrical signals travel in the brain and through the nervous system. Bosler and Greene discussed whether it could be the myelination of neural pathways that give athletes and performers their edge.

Fatty acid supplements, oatmeal, a B-complex and you’re set. Livestrong.com recommends the following: Choline is a member of the B-complex family and is a component of myelin.

Supplementing with choline or eating foods high in this vitamin may support myelin production.

Foods high in choline content include oats, eggs, fatty cuts of meat, peanuts, sesame seeds and flaxseeds.

Fish oil contains large amounts of EPA and DHA. Myelin cell membranes that are more fluid and have improved nerve impulse conduction tend to contain these fatty acids.

According to author Judy Graham, myelin-destroying diseases tend to be lower in places where fish consumption is high.

Lecithin is a fatty substance comprised of fatty acids, choline and other lipid molecules. Lecithin can be found in dietary sources such as egg yolks, soy beans, wheat germ and liver. Significant levels can be found in brussels sprouts, peanut butter, shrimp and chocolate.

There are many other opinions on what else leads to myelination and if it may even help with intelligence.

Sleep, exercise, vitamin D, and melatonin are just a few of the things one can find when doing research on what helps myelin growth and if it actually has these discussed positive effects.

Long weekend busy with crimes of opportunity Submitted Battlefords RCMP had a busy long weekend with 331 calls for service. Many of these crimes were crimes of opportunity and involved thefts of and from personal property and vehicles. Often these are crimes that could have easily been prevented.

The RCMP would like to remind people to secure their valuables and keep them out of site. This includes securing their property – inside both their residences and their vehicles.

Windows and doors should be kept locked and valuables out of sight.

It is also recommended that keys are not kept in vehicles; even hidden keys are often found resulting in a vehicle theft.

As well keys to personal property and vehicles should not be kept in plain sight inside a residence. Often times during a break and enter, keys are located for the residence and vehicles. This results in houses having to have the locks all replaced as well as vehicles being stolen.

Whitkow, in my mind, has been the ideal ghost town. Vacant buildings, false fronted stores, boarded up businesses and a tired looking onion church could have been a Wild West movie set. So now I guess that the remaining guy ghosts will still be able to gather in piece at the elevator and perhaps the lady ghosts can do whatever lady ghosts do at the church but apart from that there seems to no longer be a place in “ghost town” Whitkow for the ghosts to socialize.

April 22 the Rabbit Lake Community Hall board held its annual spring supper at the hall.

About 100 people enjoyed ham, meatballs, potatoes, homemade perogies, carrots, corn, beets, salads and chocolate cake with strawberries and whipped cream. A big thank you to the hall board for their work and to the community for their support. Tabitha LaPointe won the 50-50 draw of about $90.

April 24 the Rabbit Lake Quilter’s group held a show and tell in the community hall. Approximately 12 ladies met on Monday nights from November to April to sew and to socialize. This year, the projects featured a “Fiona” quilt, paper pieces Christmas stockings, and appliqué quilt and place mats. Over the winter the library sponsored a Kids’ Art program and some of their work was on display as well. Some highlights of the group’s activities are the crib charity quilt and dresses for Zambia. The charity crib quilt top will be sent to Prairie Chicks Quilting and Scrapbooking where it will get a back and be quilted. Eventually the quilt will find its home in a Crisis Nursery and the Hospital for Sick Children.

“Dresses for Zambia” is a project where dresses are sewn for girls in Zambian orphanages. This group of seamstresses has done projects for Canadian Food Grains Bank Auction, The Zone Youth Center and other local organizations.

“I’m looking for an opening for an appointment at my doctor’s office, to get my knees checked out,” I told Ed, my old neighbour, last week. “I have one knee that buckles on me, all too regularly.

Both knees seem to be demonstrating an unwillingness to work without protesting,” I continued.

“Hold on,” Ed said. “I did not phone you to hear you whining about your knees.”

He then asserted, “I have no patience when people start talking about their bad knees, bad backs, or bad doctors. Bad knees are their problem that the rest of us cannot fix, so they should just spare us the details.”

“Have you ever heard of sympathy and concern for others?” I asked Ed. He said that it was not his way to listen to bellyaching.

He shared that when people start telling him their ailments, he changes the subject fast before they get all wound up about every detail of their affliction.

Ed confessed that he lives his life, believing that people are whiners, but he doesn’t need to listen to them.

“Are all people complainers or whiners?” I asked Ed. He answered that they would be if you give them an opening.

There he would prepare rooms for them in his Father’s house.

Jesus promised that he would come back later from his Father’s house to take them there so they could be with him there with the Father.

Thomas was concerned about knowing the way to the Father’s house, but Jesus assured Thomas that he, Jesus, was the way to the Father in heaven.

Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Philip wanted Jesus to show them the Father.

Jesus said, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. Don’t you believe that I’m in the Father and the Father is in me? It is the Father, living in me who is doing his work.”

The disciples were not open to believing and trusting in Jesus when Jesus spoke of things beyond this world and the way of his death and separation from them.

It was not the way they thought Jesus should behave as the Messiah from God. Many decide they will live their lives, by their own truth and way. Many say, “Back off, it is my way, my truth, and my life.

I don’t care if Jesus said it first!”

Maple syrup: an old Canadian tradition that’s sweetly sustainable

North American indigenous people discovered how to convert maple sap into syrup long ago—possibly thousands of years before our time—and eventually taught the practice to early European settlers in Canada. The first known written account of their methods is a journal entry from 1606, in which French writer and lawyer Marc Lescarbot describes native people collecting “maple water” and then “distilling” it to make syrup.

Today, Canada is the world’s top producer and exporter of maple syrup, making approximately 80 per cent of the global supply. Exports for the year 2015 were valued at $360 million. The majority went to the United States, but Germany and Japan also purchased much smaller, but still significant, amounts. The province of Quebec alone produces 90 per cent of our country’s maple syrup; the remaining 10 per cent is made in Ontario, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia.

The sugar maple is the predominant species of maple tree that we harvest sap from, but some producers also use red or black maple. Canada’s eastern provinces fall right within what’s known as the maple belt. This region of hardwood forest experiences a mild seasonal transition between winter and spring that’s characterized by warm days and frosty evenings. These conditions enable maple trees to convert starch into sugar, which then mixes with water absorbed through the roots.

The maple industry is considered sustainable as the same trees are tapped year after year.

Additionally, the amount of sap taken from each tree is never enough to harm it. Many maple trees that get tapped every spring are over a hundred years old.

Many of our place names reflect the impact and influence of Scottish presence in Canada. The name Calgary, for example, is borrowed from a Hamlet in Scotland, while Nova Scotia is Latin for New Scotland.

The Scottish were among the first Europeans to establish themselves in Canada, with settlements cropping up as early as the 17th century; however, large-scale migration only began in the late 1700s. Those who arrived in the very beginning were mostly Gaelic speakers from the western Highlands region. They chose to settle down in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Upper Canada (Ontario). Some Highlanders eventually made their way to Red River, Manitoba, where they formed a colony made up of Scottish settlers with Aboriginal wives.

When migration increased still further in the 19th century, newcomers came from the Scottish Lowlands as well as the Highlands and tended to no longer settle in the Maritimes, preferring to make the Province of Canada (present-day Ontario and Quebec) home instead. Many early Scottish immigrants were farmers and artisans, while others were clergymen and teachers. Once here, they played a role in shaping all aspects of Canadian life.

The first two Prime Ministers of Canada—Sir John A. Macdonald and Alexander Mackenzie—were of Scottish descent, as were the founders of the North West Company and many other early business giants. More recently, well-known Canadians of Scottish descent include film director James Cameron; Nobel Prize laureate and author Alice Munro; cartoonist and entrepreneur Todd McFarlane; musician Sarah McLachlan; and even current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who claims partial Scottish ancestry.

It takes approximately 40 litres of maple sap to make one litre of maple syrup. These days most producers have given up the traditional practice of collecting the sap in buckets hung from a peg on the tree. Tubing systems, reverse osmosis, and high performance evaporators, among other innovations, have made gathering sap and transforming it into syrup much more efficient than it was even a few decades ago. However, despite this modernization, the old Canadian tradition of “sugaring off” in the spring remains, and each year thousands of families visit the many maple producers scattered throughout the eastern provinces. Maple syrup is both a treasure and a tradition that all Canadians can feel proud to call their own.
