Mock trial teaches students about court

One of the most prominent personalities of the Nickelodeon TV network was tried and convicted in North Battleford provincial court Friday.

SpongeBob SquarePants was found guilty of theft under $5000 for stealing a DVD from Walmart in North Battleford.

Squarepants was given a conditional discharge and ordered to apologize and learn the laws and customs of North Battleford.

The ruling came down from Judge Alexander Plummer following SquarePants’ trial in provincial court.

As you probably can tell by now, this was not a real trial.

It was, in fact, the North Battleford High School Mock Trial involving students from John Paul II Collegiate, Sakewew, and the North Battleford Comprohensive High School.

This was part of the national Law Day activities across Canada this month marking the anniversary of the signing of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

While Judge Plummer did preside over court that morning, he is actually a Grade 10 student from Sakewew who was one of several student participants. Students also played the roles of Crown and defence counsel, witnesses, court clerk, and of course the accused himself, SpongeBob SquarePants.

The student lawyers were advised by Crown prosecutors Nicole Leinenweber and Charlotte Morden and defence lawyer Rob Feist. Meanwhile, Judge Lorna Dyck was on hand to assist Judge Plummer and provide guidance and knowledge to the students about the procedures seen in court.

This was the first time a student Moot Court had been organized for North

Battleford. While the lawyers were active in organizing it, most of the effort came from the students who prepared for their various roles.

“The majority of the work, they did themselves,” said Leinenweber.

Feist credited Judge Dyck with putting a scenario together “that was appropriate for high school students and really gave them a chance to experience what the law and what a real trial process is all about.”

According to the trial scenario that played out in court, Spongebob had been accused by Walmart store manager Barney the Dinosaur of stealing a DVD of Finding Dory.

The defence team argued that SpongeBob did not have the necessary “mens rea” in this case, as he was a sea creature who was not well versed on life in North Battleford, and did not know that you had to pay for things.

Community papers stay true to their roots Community newspapers will survive because nobody else is going to tell the stories they do

By Doug Firby In the many thousands of words that have been written about the collapse of Canadian daily newspapers, there is a parallel good news story that has been untold.

There are places in Canada in which newspaper circulation is actually stable or growing, and where reader loyalty is as strong as it has ever been.

Places where people still pick up the paper and read it front to back to find out what’s going on in their community.

These places, as you might have guessed, are not Canada’s mid-sized to large cities, where the spectacular decline

of local print media has created an appalling news vacuum. Rather, it is in community newspapers that serve the hundreds of small towns that form the heartland of the country.

It is no easy ride, but community newspapers enjoy relative stability in comparison to their bigger cousins. One Ontario paper I recently encountered claims a circulation penetration rate of 89 per cent, meaning nine out of 10 households in its circulation area buy and read the paper. Those kinds of numbers were seldom matched by daily newspapers even at the height of their popularity.

Community newspapers have held true for

a number of reasons.

Unlike other media, these newspapers tells stories about their communities, stories you can’t find on a news wire. Readers cannot find their mix of local news, events, sports and advertising anywhere else. Readers often feel a personal connection, or sense of ownership, with their community newspaper. If they don’t like a story, they can call up and complain. Editors and owners belong to the same social clubs, churches and hockey leagues as their customers.

Local businesses, in turn, view community newspapers as the best bet for effectively reaching consumers in these small

markets. Their markets are “captive,” generally too small for the big guys to try to move in.

Corporations have made inroads in some smaller communities, especially in the Golden Horseshoe area between Toronto and Niagara Falls.

Yet those efforts have brought mixed success, at best, and in some cases total failure (leading to the closure of some small papers).

Their cost-saving tactics are often what doom them to failure. Companies try to recover the cost of purchasing a small paper by cutting staff. There are cases, in fact, in which the only reporter left at a “local” paper doesn’t even

live in the community the paper represents.

This is a fatal tactic, especially in communities where the personal connection is everything.

In the little Southern Ontario town of Petrolia, for example, the community was so disgusted by what has happened to its local paper under company ownership that local advertisers supported the emergence an independent competitor.

When a corporate paper puts virtually nothing into a community (and yet expects to take our profits through advertising revenue), it’s not really that hard to provide a better product.

All of this is not to say small papers have an easy ride. Recently, publishers, editors and business managers from Ontario’s community papers gathered in Toronto for its annual conference. They spoke of the many worries that cloud the crystal ball: ongoing trouble attracting national advertisers, the difficulty in retaining talented young staff who get richer offers from bigger markets and adapting to the digital age in which a solid web presence and social media strategy are an es-

sential part of the mix.

There will be papers, no doubt, that will give up the fight and fold, as some have. Yet for those who stay, strive to adapt and keep their eye on the ball, it’s hard to imagine a future without a community newspaper in some form.

They will survive because nobody else is going to tell the stories they do — about local births and deaths, local heroes and hooligans, the wise and foolish decisions of the local council and prospects for the minor hockey teams. The heartland has shown, time and again, that they will support a local news source that lives and breathes small town Canadian life.

It makes you wonder whether, in that sense at least, the small towns of Canada are so much different from the big ones.

The stories that impact us most, whether in Corner Brook, N.L., or Vancouver, B.C., are the ones about our neighbours.

Catholic schools place where Christians feel safe rom

Association 2012 Columnist of the Year On April 24, Premier Brad Wall posted on Facebook his response to the Court of Queen’s Bench ruling on funding non-Catholic students attending Catholic separate schools, and it was a strong one.

Wall said, “Like many Saskatchewan parents and students, I am very disappointed and concerned by the recent court ruling that will force non-Catholic students out of Catholic schools.

“Your government is examining all legal and legislative options to reverse this ruling.”

The next day he posted, “The Catholic school boards do not want this.

The Good Spirit public school division filed the lawsuit in a local turf war and the resulting judge decision is potentially serious for students across Saskatchewan.

“We will not let this stand,” Wall concluded.

It struck me, while reading the numerous comments following his April 24 post, what this is really about for the families affected. It’s not about funding. It’s about feeling safe as a Christian.

In 21st century Canada, being a Christian is increasingly becoming a subject of persecution.

We no longer feel safe to be Christians in our own country, whose national anthem ends in “God keep our land, glorious and free!”

We’re just waiting for that line to be edited out the next time the House of Commons takes a whack at O Canada.

I would venture to say that the majority of families, like our own, who are not Catholics but

put their kids in Catholic schools, their reasoning is simple. To us, it is not a “Catholic” school. It is a “Christian” school.

To express conservative Christian views today can be socially or career limiting. Say the wrong thing and you can quickly become a pariah, or even lose your job and the ability to support your family.

In a nation where it was once commonplace to open the school day with the Lord’s Prayer in public schools, now it is pretty much verboten to even talk of God. Gender issues are now front and centre in the news, media and public life, but if you’re not sure about New York City identifying 31 different genders, you better keep your mouth shut.

If the idea of killing an unborn child bothers you, you are offside.

When it seems that every other faith, but Christianity, is now afforded respect and deference, you feel under attack. A cartoon of Allah can get you killed, but there is no end to the atrocious disrespect afforded Jesus Christ.

I’ve been to numerous First Nations events which almost uniformly start with an opening prayer.

No one today would ever say something negative about that, but if a city council or legislature begins a session with a Christian prayer, they are under attack.

Even something as simple as Christmas is now under attack.

“Happy Holidays, anyone?”

So it is in this context that many Christians in Saskatchewan have been flocking to Catholic schools for their children.

It is perhaps the last bastion where we might feel safe in our beliefs and cultural mores.

In a comment in response to Brad Wall’s post, Sharla Miller-Guenther said, “We go to an evangelical church and we send our kids to Catholic school. I like the fact that my kids can talk and sing songs about God. Public schools don’t allow any of that. We may believe a bit different but worship and pray to the same God.” Delaine Griffiths said, “The Catholic system being faith based is the only option other than private that still respects Christian beliefs and principles so as non-Catholics, in our experience, was a higher moral, much happier and more respectful environment.”

Debi McDonald Pederson added, “Since the public school system has taken all spiritual beliefs, traditions etc out of the school, many Christians of all denominations want that moral compass and those teachings in their kids’ schools. We didn’t go the Catholic route but moved out of Saskatoon to a school that still had Christmas concerts and still recited the Lord’s Prayer when our kids were young ... and we are Lutheran.”

Craig Rohrke stated, “My daughter is not Catholic but goes to Catholic school because I like that kids can freely talk about God and Jesus without getting suspended. I like that my kids are getting a Christian education. I like that my kids say the Lord’s Prayer every morning like we used to do at public schools.”

It is simply no longer politically correct to be openly Christian, and say so, in today’s society.

The election of Donald Trump as president was in no small measure a result of many people saying “To hell with that political correctness.”

To be Christian in Canada today is now to have a target on your back. This

Super summer: Guardians, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man to dominate at the movies

Welcome once again to our 2017 Cairns on Cinema summer blockbuster season preview special!

Yes, indeed, the summer movie season launches this weekend, May 5 to 7, which also coincides with some 20-degree plus Celsius temperatures in our area. So it will feel like summer again, both outside as well as inside the movie theatres.

As for what to expect, well, it looks like more of the same. You know, every summer it seems like

we get the same thing, with familiar franchises returning with their latest sequels, reboots or remakes.

Today, I am preparing my annual predictions of what to expect at the box office for the summer blockbuster season.

This is typically the season of the superheroes and space aliens, CGIanimated cartoon characters, and other popular, people pleasers.

It is also typically the season of the biggest movie grosses. But I question whether that will be the case this year.

We had a stronger than usual spring season. Just this past April, The Fate of the Furious opened to a massive worldwide haul, just crossing the $1 billion mark.

That follows up on movies released earlier this year, Beauty and the Beast and Kong: Skull Island, among others.

The November-December season promises to be huge, with a Justice League release in November, along with other remakes, sequels and reimaginings slated for release.

The mother of all releases promises to be Star Wars: The Last Jedi on Dec. 15, which threatens to set no shortage of box office records.

The reason I mention these movies is because the lineup of movies this summer looks a little “blah” compared to later in the year.

What I find most interesting is the scheduling. In past years, you could usually count on Tony Stark’s Iron Man (played by Robert Downey Jr.) to show up in one movie or another during the first weekend in May.

Not this year. In an interesting bit of scheduling, the Marvel offering during the first weekend of May will be Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

As for Iron Man, he won’t be making an appearance until later in the year, when he shows up in Spider Man: Homecoming, rolling out July 7. Already, the hype machine is on. I noticed Sony Studios has already released details about the new armour Iron Man is supposed to be wearing for that movie.

No doubt, the comic book fans are eating up this information. In my estimation, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be the two movies that duke it out for first place at the

domestic box office this summer. I will fill you in a little later on which one I think will end up on top for the entire summer.

After looking over the slate of releases, and after much consideration and contemplation, here is my list of what the top 10 movies of the summer blockbuster season will look like at the domestic box office: 10. Alien: Covenant, Fox, opening May 19 There isn’t a heck of a lot for science-fiction for fans at the box office this summer, which explains why I think this latest in the Alien series will do $160 million in business – which would be a record for the franchise, if it happens.

8. Cars 3, Disney/Pixar, opening June 16 For some reason this Cars series is immensely popular and critically panned. Nobody gives this series much respect. Still, the NASCAR fans love this series which is why it should do good business in the range of $200 million.

7. War for the Planet of the Apes, Fox, opening July 14 The previous release Dawn of the Planet of the Apes made $208 million domestic, so I feel justified in predicting that this one might do a little better than that at $220 million.

6. Transformers: The Last Knight, Paramount, opening June 23 Quite honestly, aren’t people fed up yet with this lousy Transformers series of movies? It looks like people are finally getting sick of it, which is why I predict only $240 million for this one.

5. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Disney, May 26 Johnny Depp is back and so is the Pirates franchise after a considerable absence.

My guess is fans will welcome this franchise back with a $270 million domestic haul.

4. Wonder Woman, Warner Bros., opening June 2 This is the long-awaited debut feature film for Wonder Woman, one of the pillars of DC comic books, who was introduced to audiences in the previous Batman v Su-

perman movie a year earlier.

Given that Batman v Superman made around $330 million, it stands to reason Wonder Woman might do similar business. My guess is $310 million.

3. Despicable Me 3, Universal, opening June 30 The Despicable Me series has been on fire at the box office in recent years and should dominate the CGI-animated box office this summer. My prediction is $340 million, a number that would be in line with the past grosses of Despicable Me 2 ($368 mil) and Minions ($336 mil).

That leaves the battle at the top of the box office for the summer of 2017, and after running down all the numbers and scenarios, here is what I have come up with: 2. Spider-Man: Homecoming, Sony/Columbia, opening July 7.

I have gone back and forth on this one. On the one hand, there seems to be a real desire out there for a SpiderMan movie compared to past years. What’s more, this movie has exactly the “star power” that should propel it to a summer box office victory.

By star power, I’m not talking about movie stars. I’m talking comic book stars: Spider-Man and Iron Man, who have absolutely dominated the box office in previous years and who Marvel can count on for doing so again.

My concern is the previous grosses for the last two Spider-Man movies: both fell well short of the $300 million domestic threshold. I think this one will do better than that, but it won’t be enough

to win the summer. Sorry, Spider-Man fans. My guess is the domestic haul will come in at $370 million, which would still be a considerable improvement over the past two movies.

That leaves the number one movie of the summer box office.

1. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2., Disney, opening May 5 On this prediction, I’m going with my gut, based largely on how well the first movie in this series did.

It’s also based on the fact that it should get off to a roaring start at the box office this weekend. I’ve seen estimates of a weekend domestic haul of $150 million.

If that is the case I expect an overall haul around $450 million, and that, my friends, should be enough to win the summer box office race in 2017.

So there you have it: my prediction is a huge summer for Marvel, DC, and Despicable Me characters, as usual.

But there is always room for surprises and upsets, and it always seems as if there is at least one unexpected surprise movie that catches fire and dominates. If you’re looking for possible Top 10 upsets, you might want to keep an eye on An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power, coming out July 28: you can bet all the Al Gore fans will show up for that one, and round up their friends, too.

That’s my look at what’s in store at the cinemas during the summer of 2017! Enjoy the warm weather, and the movies.

“There are layers to this that can be seen,” Dyck said.

One is to show the process of how a trial works, but there is an added layer of showing what is needed to prove a case, including what are the elements of an offence and what is “actus reas” and “mens rea”.

There is also a third layer that Judge Dyck describes as a “deeper sociological and cultural element to this that will get people thinking.”

That is “the idea of outsiders coming in and knowing the laws and what needs to be known and how we would treat outsiders.”

10 student at the NBCHS, portrayed Spongebob in the court scenario. He came away from the experience having learned something new about how courts function.

“It’s interesting to see how the courts work. It’s very different than it is on TV,” he said. “It’s interesting to learn how it actually works and how the witnesses get called, and just the court proceedings in general.”

Bacchetto also said he learned something about the judge’s role in helping rehabilitate the accused.

Plummer said he, too, found it different compared to what he’s seen on TV. “I’m a big fan of ‘Judge Judy’ so I watch her show a lot,” said Plummer. “And you know what, surprisingly, it’s a lot different from

her show. So I’m actually shocked and quite amazed about how the system actually works.”

Plummer said he had learned a lot during his brief time on the bench, and might even be inspired to pursue a legal career himself one day.

“I’m glad I got the opportunity to do it, I learned a lot about what it’s like to sentence somebody. And you know, in some cases you feel bad for them, but you have to do it.”

In all, Judge Dyck was pleased with the enthusiasm shown by the students who had participated that day.

“What had been our hope is that they would learn something about the court process but also have some enjoyment, and I believe that happened.”

Despite budget woes, safety still a priority at City council

In spite of all the recent budget cuts the city of North Battleford has been forced to deal with, one area that is largely being spared the knife is public safety initiatives.

Monday night’s council meeting saw approval of City Manager Jim Puffalt’s recommendations to pare down the 2017 operations and capital budget, in response to the loss of revenues from the provincial budget. The city had to address a $1.4 million shortfall through a combination of service cuts, capital project delays and a tax increase of three percent.

But as Puffalt indicated on Monday night, maintaining community safety initiatives was a top priority.

Puffalt noted community safety was the “number one strategic objective from council.” When going through the list of items, Puffalt explained that when they came across an item that had to do with a community safety issue, the reaction was “hands off - we can’t touch it, we have to carry forward.”

As a result, the final budget cuts largely spared those initiatives, although

there is one new enhancedduties community safety officer position that is being put off to 2018.

On a related issue, the City is ready to go to war with the province on the issue of provincial prisoners. City administration is threatening to refuse to take on provincial prisoners that are remanded in city jails.

This has been a longstanding point of contention for the City. Puffalt explained that while six other municipalities are being paid by the province for the privilege, North Battleford is not one of them. The city is demanding a deal be in place by June 30; otherwise, the prisoners will have to go elsewhere.

While the budget dominated the council meeting, the ongoing community safety initiatives that were happening were items in the reports of both community safety coordinator Herb Sutton and RCMP inspector John Sutherland.

In his report Sutton said he was “really excited” about the membership increase in Citizens on Patrol.

They are now up to 13, just two short of achieving their target of 15 members.

Sutton also spoke of ongoing efforts towards the Phase 2 proposal for SAGE - Safety, Acceptance, Guidance, Empowerment.

That proposal included striking a steering committee that would include and bring together the four levels of government -- federal provincial municipal and First Nations.

indicated plans were continuing to implement and introduce crime reduction initiatives. They are developing Community Safety Committees with representation across the detachment area to provide input.

As well, a rural planning session to address safety in the RM of Meota and resort villages was to happen April 29.

Mayor Ryan Bater also asked a question with respect to saliva testing to be used to test for driving while impaired by marijuana. North Battleford was one of ten communities selected to conduct those tests.

Sutherland said over 200 tests were conducted during the test and a final report with the results was sent back to Ottawa where final decisions will be made. He explained the initiative was done mainly to test the two instruments the force was planning to use.

It is currently being reviewed and potentially screened in under a new federal program: the Federal/Provincial/Territorial Collaborative Approach, a new model within Public Safety Canada.

Once given the green light, further resources would be provided to the SAGE group to move forward with Phase 2.

But that green light hasn’t happened yet. It was clear on Monday that Sutton is getting frustrated by a lack of progress.

“We may have to consider putting additional pressure on the federal government, and perhaps the provincial government to act on this,” said Sutton.

Some further correspondence may be required.

The other report was from the RCMP which presented first-quarter statistics for for Battlefords City Detachment from January to March, and there was some good news to report.

Calls for service are down from 3,064 to 2,863 for that period, and decreases are being seen in most crime categories including property offences, criminal offences, business break and enters, drug offences, liquor acts, motor vehicle collisions, provincial traffic offences, impaired operation of a motor vehicle, municipal bylaws and false alarms. There is an increase in person offences (ie. assaults, robberies), and in residential break and enters.

New lamps for old: the Assyrians settled in the Battlefords more than 100 years ago

Recently, long-time North Battleford resident, Margaret Beach – a direct descendent of the original Assyrians who migrated from the Middle East to Battleford in 1903 – suggested that 114 years after they arrived in this area might be a good time to

write an article for the general public about their early struggles, dauntless courage in the face of overwhelming obstacles, wonderful successes, and many contributions to the Battlefords social and economic life.

And, on the occasion of

Canada’s 150th birthday, that we should reflect on the many advances made by the Assyrian people in our communities and nation. I agreed. Here is their story: The News-Optimist (June 22, 1979) noted that, “The Canadian West

has no greater settlement story than that of the Assyrians who landed on Canadian soil on January 1, 1903.”

They were interviewed by officials at Pier 21 in Halifax (as were all newcomers to Canada) before they were permitted to leave for their destination thousands of miles across a largely primitive and unbroken land in the interior – to Battleford (North Battleford did not yet exist; it was granted village status in 1906), North West Territories.

The Assyrians were among Battleford’s very first settlers. Their stalwart leader, the Reverend Dr. Isaac Adams, organized two resettlement projects in Canada, one in 1903 near Battleford, and one in 1906 about eight miles northeast of the first settlement. Importantly, unlike many other ethnic groups, these settlements were composed of families, not men only.

The goal was permanent settlement. But the story of our Assyrian brothers and sisters begins long before their arrival on the shores of our great nation. It begins in the old country – in Turkey and

Iran. “The name of the Reverend Isaac Adams will always be cherished here (in the Battlefords).

He is enshrined in their hearts as one who gave them ‘new lamps for old’ on these Western Plains, and guided their footsteps in the strangers’ land” (North Battleford News Optimist, June 22, 1979).

Isaac Adams was born in the village of Sangar, near the town of Urmia, in 1872. At the age of six, his father passed away, so his mother and five siblings were left in the care of relatives.

Early in life Isaac came under the influence of the Presbyterian mission where he attended school. At the age of sixteen, he made his way to the United States, and with the help of the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions, studied to

become a minister. After graduating, Isaac traveled throughout the United States on a 45-day lecture tour dressed in his ‘exotic’ native costumes. He gave lectures and sold his photographs and used the money to open schools in various Assyrian towns in Iran.

In 1897, Rev. Adams entered Grand Rapids Medical College and graduated with a degree in medicine three years later. He promptly returned to the homeland and married Sarah, the daughter of a prominent physician.

Shortly thereafter, Dr. Adams began to organize groups of his countrymen for settlement in North America. Their primary motivation to emigrate was to escape religious persecution.

Assyrian settlers Continued from Page 10 But where to settle?

Canada’s immigration policy was to settle and develop Western Canada into a major wheat- and cereal-producing region.

The government did not discriminate against immigrants of a different ethnic background or creed. It was interested primarily in settlers who had agricultural skills and a strong work ethic. The Assyrians had both.

In the fall of 1902, the Adams led a column of six horse-drawn carts with 36 men, women and children from Sangar (near Tehran, Iran) towards the Turkish border. Their destination: Canada, the North West Territories, and Battleford.

The family names of these remarkable adventurers included Adams, Backus, Shabaz, Odishoo, Jacobs, George, Baba, Badal, Robin, Lazar and Tamraz. The wagons made it across the robberinfested Turkish-Iranian border without incident (the prayers of Reverend Adams and his followers were answered).

From Turkey, they took a train to Hamburg, Germany where they boarded a steamship, the “Assyria,” and sailed to Halifax, Nova Scotia. From there, the settlers took a train to Winnipeg where they spent the winter. In the spring, they travelled by train to Saskatoon. After purchasing carts and oxen to pull them, and other necessary pieces of agricultural equipment, they followed the old Battleford Trail along the south side of the North Saskatchewan River to Battleford, at which point they ferried the river to the North Bank.

Reverend Adams and his congregation knelt and gave thanks to God for His bounties and mercies, and for preserving their lives during their arduous journey.

The Assyrian settlers had travelled thousands of miles. They were home, even if home was only an encampment of tents where today stands the Saskatchewan Hospital.

To house them through the winter, the settlers built a one story stone structure 30 by 50 feet, with twofoot-thick walls on Dr. Adam’s homestead. The settlers lived here communally as one large family during the winter of 19041905. Construction began on individual houses the following spring.

The Assyrians filed for homesteads shortly after their arrival. A quarter section could be purchased for $10. In 1903, the area was sparsely populated. Battleford, the closest town, was a few miles away from the Assyrian settlement.

For the first few years, the Assyrians engaged in subsistence farming to provide for their basic food requirements. To bring in cash, the men worked in town at any labour jobs they could find.

The colony prospered during the first few years.

The land was virgin and gardens produced much more than the farms in the old country. Sarah Adams remarked that the cabbages grew so large that they could not fit within a person’s arms. Moreover, a workman’s wages in Battleford were considerably higher than they were in Persia.

When it became apparent that the Canadian Northern Railway would build a rail line north of the river (to the dismay of the citizens of Battleford), settlers, businessmen and speculators (largely Anglo-Saxons from the United Kingdom and Eastern Canada) poured into the area.

In March of 1906, North Battleford acquired the status of village. Four months later, it became a town (it gained city status in 1913). All of this meant more, and better, work opportunities for the Assyrians, particularly on the railway and in the booming construction trade.

By 1906, the settlers had saved enough money to bring their relatives to Canada. In the same year, Dr. Adams went to Persia and returned with forty Assyrians. The new settlers purchased home-

steads in the White Wood area, about eight miles north-east of North Battleford. The soil was excellent, and the land was flat and free of rocks. But good land was not a sufficient remedy for the Canadian farmer’s situation in those days.

Quarter-section farms were inadequate for dry land farming; half-sections were viable but often needed more labour than one family could muster. On top of that, crops were hit by frost year after year before farmers could take them off. As a consequence, six out of ten farms failed. The Assyrian farms were no exception.

By 1914, most Assyrian farmers and their families had moved off their lands and settled in a section of North Battleford referred to as “Chisholm Town.”

In subsequent years, more Assyrians joined the colony in North Battleford, either on their own, or with the help of relatives already established.

The Assyrians worked hard and with determination and perseverance, they farmed, established businesses, and educated their children so they could enrich the fibre and strength of their adopted homeland (The News Optimist, n.d.)

For example, the founder of the candy industry in North Battleford was Esakan Shabaz, who opened the Olympia Candy Store where he made his own candies. There were many other Assyrianowned and operated businesses in the Battlefords.

These included: Madison Billiards (owner Moses Backus and sons Joseph and Donald); Picadily Grill (Eli Backus); Bob’s Barber Shop (Robert Backus); Patricia Confectionary Owner (Sam Esaw); Lazar Dry Cleaning and Tailor Shop (Daniel and Sulton Lazar);

North Battleford Tannery (Fred Lazar); Beaver Billiards (Tom Yonan); Modern Billiards (Bob Shabaz); Battleford Furniture (Richard and Chris Odishaw); People’s Cab (William and Albert George); J. R.’s Distributors, Dispensing and Catering (Robert Odishaw); Korner Store (Shirley Robin) and Capital Grocery Owners (John and Thirza Odishaw). Finally, Margaret Beach noted that her brother, Edward Robin, refereed hockey in North Battleford. He relocated to Knoxville, Tennessee and refereed hockey there for 30 years. After he passed away, the organization raised a banner in the coliseum with his name on it.

It was a great honour.

Assyrians also contributed in other important ways. Johnny Esaw was vice-president of sports for the CTV television network. Moe and Jeep George coached and managed some of the most successful hockey teams in North Battleford’s history.

They also assisted many young hockey players with their hockey careers. Mike Odishaw was reeve of the Rural Municipality of North Battleford for many years. Dick Robin was a member of the North Battleford Public School Board for many years. Chris Odishaw served terms as President of the Battlefords Chamber of Commerce

and as Mayor of Battleford.

David Odishaw was a director with the Chamber of Commerce. This list is by no means exhaustive.

A fundamental defining point of the Assyrians was their religion, which sustained them when they left their homeland and during the hard, early years of settlement.

The Assyrians, led by their minister, were the first Presbyterians in the region. When Dr. Adams left for California, they brought in a new minister, Reverend Eshoo, who provided church services in the Assyrian language well into the 1940s.

At this point, the Assyrians joined St. Andrews Presbyterian Church and have remained

its backbone throughout the years. They served in various capacities as treasurers, ushers and elders of the church. There were many Assyrian youth in the church. Assyrian women were active in church work as members of the church ladies auxiliary and their handiwork and baked goods were in high demand.

In a special church ceremony on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the arrival of the Assyrians to the Battlefords, Lieutenant-Governor C. Irwin Mcintosh noted, “It is a matter of record today that almost half of the elders of St. Andrews are descendants of those first settlers. They have made a contribution to our city that

belies their numbers” (The News Optimist, 1983).

Like so many of our pioneers, the Assyrians came to Canada to escape religious persecution and oppression. The idea of freedom and owning their own land was irresistible.

They were willing to endure any hardships to attain the promised land.

The Assyrians contributed much to their new land.

North Stars in must-win territory after loss to Bandits

The situation is simple for the Battlefords North Stars after a 4-1 loss to the Brooks Bandits Tuesday at the Western Canada Cup in Penticton, B.C. A win over the British Columbia Hockey League’s Chilliwack Chiefs Thursday at 3 p.m. Saskatchewan time will give the North Stars a chance to make it in the playoffs Saturday.

If they fall to the Chiefs, the 2016-17 campaign for the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League champions will come to an end, as they currently sit at the bottom of the five-team field with a 0-2-1 record and a single point.

“We need to play tougher than we have so far, as we’ve been nowhere near the level that we need to be at,” North Stars head coach and general manager Nate Bedford said. “It was a very similar performance to our first two games (against Penticton and Portage) with a similar result.

“We need to find a way to be better against Chilliwack and hopefully we can get a few breaks here when it comes to other teams winning games in order to have a shot at the playoffs.”

Unlike their first two games of the tournament, the North Stars found themselves in a hole early as the Bandits jumped out to a 2-0 lead after almost

seven minutes of play.

That margin could have been worse if not for a great five-minute penalty kill for the North Stars later in the opening frame, as Jared Blaquiere was given a major penalty for charging and a game misconduct after a hit on Conner Jean.

“The guys were playing with desperation out there and I would love to see that

all through our lineup,” Bedford said.

“The penalties that we took today were terrible.

If we didn’t kill them off, it could have been a 12-0 game instead of 4-1.”

Although the North Stars did get a power play goal from Keaton Holinaty in the second period, their power play was another source of struggle for the team as they went one-fornine against the Alberta Junior Hockey League champions.

Through three roundrobin games, the North Stars have only scored once in 18 power play opportunities.

“I’m going to see if we can start declining penalties,” Bedford said. “You can’t play on the outside like we did and hope that things happen.

Joel Grzybowski played well once again for the North Stars as he made 29 saves in the loss.

Coby Downs and Levi Kleiboer both had assists on Holinaty’s goal.

The Bandits, who have clinched a playoff spot and have a 3-0 record ahead of a game against the Portage Terriers Wednesday night, were led on offence by a three assist performance from Josh McKechney.

Oliver Chau and Jean each had a goal and an assist, while Arnaud Vachon and Parker Foo also found the back of the net.

Mitchel Benson turned aside 19 shots to earn the victory.

Midget AA Beavers ready for new season

This year’s North Battleford Midget AA Beavers baseball team will have a much different look to it than the one that won the Tier 1 provincial champions at Beaver Lions Stadium last July.

With only three players returning from that squad, there were be a few holes that will needed to be filled on the roster when the 2017 Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League season begins for the Beavers Saturday with a doubleheader against the White Butte

Broncos in Balgonie.

“We have a balance of the team moving up from the bantam ranks to play with us this year, along with Colby Heidt, Brock Thompson and Tyler Benoit who played for us last season,” Beavers head coach Bert Benoit said.

“Everyone’s pretty excited about the season ahead. We’ve been practicing in the gym since the last week of February and we just moved outside this past week, so we are all pretty anxious to get started.”

As one of the returning veterans, Thompson has

moved into a mentorship role to help get the new Beavers players used to what life will be like at a higher level.

“There’s a lot of guys on this team that are willing to learn from us older players,” Thompson said.

“They are willing to put the effort in and they are out here at every practice.

“I was in a similar situation to what they were in when I started out a couple of years ago, so it’s a little bit different to be in that teaching role now.”

Although he has yet to see the lineup in game action as of yet, Benoit is

excited about the overall depth his team has to offer.

“Our hitting has been looking pretty good in our practices, especially with our younger players, so I’m really looking forward to that part of our game,” said Benoit, who is joined on the coaching staff by Brent Holhoyi and his son Brett.

“In our league we play four games over the course of a weekend, so it’s really important to have good pitching depth. At the moment, nine of our 13 players can throw the ball well, so that’s a good thing to have on our roster.”

After their trip to Balgonie, they will travel to Moose Jaw Sunday for a pair of games against the defending SPBL champion Canucks.

“We know that our team isn’t going to be playing the same way that we were a year ago, so we’ll need to find out right away who can throw the ball and who can bat well,” Thompson said.

“If we can get some early leads, I think it will help to build some confidence for our younger guys. A few wins to start the season will be great as well, as we don’t want to be in a situation where we are trying to chase teams down at the end of the regular season.”

Following another road trip next weekend to play the Lumsden Cubs and the Humboldt Dodgers, the Beavers will make their season debut at Beaver Lions Stadium in a doubleheader against the Regina White Sox on May 20.

That will mark the start of a 10-game homestand for the Beavers that will last until June 10 and will see them take on the Weyburn Beavers, Regina Blues, Regina Pacers and the Canucks.

They will also be in a tournament in Saskatoon from June 2-4.

After trips to Regina to play the Blue Jays and Buffalos, the Beavers will conclude their regular season at home against the Dodgers on June 25.

Buziak to play for WHL title Staff Braydon Buziak’s rookie season in the Western Hockey League is proving to be a memorable one.

The Battleford product will have a chance to play for a league championship as the Regina Pats captured the Eastern Conference title Sunday with a 7-4 road win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the sixth game of their best-of-seven series.

This marks the first time that the Pats have made it to the final since 1984. They haven’t won a WHL championship since 1980.

Buziak, who plays as a centre, has a goal and three assists in 17 playoff games.

The 19-year-old scored

his first career WHL playoff goal Wednesday night as he helped the Pats get rolling in a 6-2 in over the Hurricanes.

He also had an assist Sunday on a goal by Robbie Holmes, which helped to get the Pats rolling on offence after they fell behind 3-0 early in the game.

Standing in the way of Buziak and his teammates from a WHL title are the Seattle Thunderbirds, who won the Western Conference title in six games over the Kelowna Rockets Sunday night.

The Thunderbirds, who have never won a championship, made it to the final last year but lost to the Brandon Wheat Kings in five games.

Former Battlefords AAA Stars goaltender Rylan Toth is a member of the Thunderbirds, but he’s been sidelined with an injury since the end of the regular season as rookie Carl Stankowski has taken over starting netminding duties for the team.

The series is slated to get underway at 7 p.m. Friday at the Brandt Centre in Regina.

In addition to capturing the Ed Chynoweth Cup, the winner of the WHL final will go on to represent the league at the Memorial Cup in Windsor, Ont. from May 19-28.

The Pats will be hosting the 100th edition of the tournament next year.

Battlefords AAA Stars blueliner Luke Reid has another option for his hockey career.

The 15-year-old from Warman was selected by the Sioux City Musketeers with the 48th overall pick during the third round of the United States Hockey League futures draft Monday night.

Reid, who is committed to the North Dakota Fighting Hawks NCAA program for the 2020-21 season, had 23 points in 39 games during his second season in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League.

He was also a second round pick in the 2016 Western Hockey League draft by the Victoria Royals and his Sakatchewan Junior Hockey League rights are held by the Kindersley Klippers after he was selected in last year’s bantam draft.

The Musketeers have won three Clark Cup

championships in the USHL, with their last title coming in 2002.

They finished on top of the league in the regular season this year with a 4013-5-2 record and are tied up at one in their semifinal series with the Waterloo Black Hawks.

Three other players from Saskatchewan were selected in Monday’s draft, in which the teams could only select players that were born in 2001.

Forward Luke Mylymok of Wilcox, who played for the Notre Dame Midget AAA Hounds and has committed to play for the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs starting in 2019, was a fourth round pick by the Green Bay Gamblers.

Mylymok was also drafted by the Royals in the fourth round of last year’s WHL draft.

The Omaha Lancers used a fifth round choice on Shellbrook forward Austin Lamotte, who suited up for the Prince Albert Mintos

this past season and was a second round pick by the Yorkton Terriers last year.

Rounding out the quartet was Regina Pat Canadians forward Harrison Blaisdell, who was selected by the Fargo Force in the sixth round.

The Regina native, who was a second round pick by the Vancouver Giants last May, is also expected to join Reid on the Fighting Hawks roster in 2020.

There was also a player with SJHL ties selected in the USHL’s entry draft Tuesday, where teams could select players that were born between 1997 and 2001.

Defenceman Justin Lee, who had two assists in six games for the Notre Dame Hounds, was drafted by the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in the sixth round.

The 17-year-old from Waskada, Man. spent the majority of last season with the Midget AAA Hounds, where he had 19 points in 39 games.

With an event that’s been a staple in the community for almost a halfcentury, one might expect the organizers of the Kinsmen Indoor Rodeo to rest on the laurels.

That’s hardly the case for the members of the rodeo committee, as plans are already in the works to improve next spring’s event at the North Battleford Civic Centre.

“Once everyone’s taken some time to reflect on the weekend, we wil sit down and discuss what went well and what we can build on as we go forward,” rodeo committee member Heath Gabruch said.

“We want to bring a world class show to the community each year so

we like to take a look at what other rodeos are doing in order to keep things fresh. However, there’s also some things that have always stayed the same around here as you can’t make them any better.”

The 47th edition of the rodeo, which took place from April 28-30, proved to be another smash hit when it came to the crowds that were at the Civic Centre.

“We had a sellout on Friday night, which was tremendous, and Saturday’s crowd was really good as well,” Gabruch said. “It was down a little bit Sunday, but I think that was because it was the first really nice day we’ve had on a weekend in awhile, so that may have affected things a little bit.

The floral industry itself is huge. It is a multibillion-dollar industry that brightens our lives at every special holiday and event in our lives. It does make a great contribution to our economy and provides a host of employment opportunities.

However, there are not many places for individuals to learn how to be a florist, someone who understands flowers and how to treat them to ensure long-lasting bouquets. There is a skill that needs to be learned in order to design and work with a variety of floral elements. Floristry is an important component of the horticultural industry.

However, it is sometimes difficult to find training that is offered close to you when you need it. If you

are located within travelling distance to Saskatoon, training has just become a little bit easier.

The Saskatoon School of Horticulture is offering a variety of options in the floristry field. Those interested can obtain experience doing floral design by offering a variety of floral design classes that will give the participant the great joy of working with flowers but also provide the necessary skills to work in the industry or run a florist shop. Please note participants will receive a certificate for each level of education that is completed. We even offer a more in-depth certificate program in floristry for those who wish to achieve more certification.

Lions,residents volunteer for spring cleanup orden Radisson

A baby shower was held in the seniors’ room on April 22 to honour Ronan Lee, the new son of Dustin and Brittney Tracksell.

Head table and gift table were nicely decorated in blue and white cloths, balloons and mini baby bottles filled with candy. MC was Kandice Walker who introduced the head table – Judy Wiebe (Brittney’s mom), Brittney and Ronan, and Diane Tracksell (Dustin’s mom).

One game played was testing the eight unlabelled baby foods. Winning for getting the most right foods was Leanne Sargent.

Then “What’s In Your Handbag” was played, with Diane Tracksell getting the most points.

The community gift of cash was presented and Brittney then opened the many gifts that were then passed around for everyone to see. Brittney thanked everyone for coming and for the many beautiful gifts and outfits, then lunch was served to everyone present.

The Cotton Pickin’ Quilters meet at Radisson St. Paul Lutheran Church basement every Wednes-

day afternoon from October until April. All quilts sewn before Christmas are sent to the Salvation Army in Saskatoon, along with scarves, toques and mittens from the mitten tree.

Most of the materials, such as fabrics, thread and yarn used by the sewing group, have been donated by members of the Radisson and Borden Community.

At the Borden Friendship Club kaiser tournament April 18 the winners were Gary Lesychn of Radisson and Dianne Rawlyk of Borden and low score to Florence Neufeld.

The next kaiser is Tuesday, May 2 at 7 p.m. in the club room.

Condolences are extended to the family and relatives of Delbert Enns, who passed away April 9 at the age of 89 and whose memorial service was held April 17 in St. John’s Anglican Church in Borden, with Reverend Alex Parsons presiding and niece Sharon Assman giving words of remembrance. Delbert had lived in the Borden area most of his life, farming and raising Simmental cattle, until he and his wife Evelyn (deceased) retired to Borden.

Lunch was served by the Borden Friendship Club in the Borden Community Centre.

The Borden Friendship Club held their monthly potluck supper on April 26 with over 60 in attendance

blowing out the candles on the cakes baked by Eileen Petrun were Ann Brand, Anna Elliot, Mary Thiessen, Ron Suderman, Larry Trischuk, Steve Derbawka, Stan Foster, Bob Wardhaugh and Ed Neufeld.

The Friendship Singers, with director Marlene Derbawka, sang four selections. Then Phil Miller sang a number of country and western songs and he could also yodel. Miller had a great voice and had the audience participating in many of the songs. The club members are invited to Radisson for supper and program on May 4 and over 35 plan to attend.

The Borden Farmers’ Market will start Friday, May 5, in the Borden Fire Hall, from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The Borden United Church will again be selling burgers and hotdogs from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.

The Borden Lions Club held a village and Highway 16 ditch cleaning on Saturday, April 29, with a good number of Lions members and extra help by other folks from the village and district. After the ditch cleanup, four volunteers then headed over to the streets in Borden to pick up garbage. While this was going on the Grade 12 students had a bottle drive on the go and the Borden Cemetery crew were cleaning up and removing covers over graves that had fallen in.

There girls were winners at the Unity Music Festival and some are going on to Provincials.

Door prizes from Georgine’s Greenhouse were won by lucky attendees, and a 2018 CWL Membership was won by Jeanette Gerein. The clean up crew of four Christian Ethics students was efficient and much appreciated.

Medstead news

Library events continue with renewed energy

In spite of the budget cuts that have been a large topic of discussion in Medstead, the local library board has put in passionate effort to preserve Medstead’s institution. Pressing forward optimistically, the library has been successful in scheduling many upcoming events. These occasions serve many purposes, including encouraging community engagement and general enjoyment.

With such passion and effort of the library board, coupled with such strong community support, it is no surprise that funding has returned to the Saskatchewan libraries. A noteworthy example was the presentation of April 27, in conjunction with Medstead School, where a Vimy Ridge Presentation in commemoration of the

battle’s 100th anniversary was held.

A previously scheduled event entitled the Gopher Broke Travelling Medicine Show has been postponed until further notice. This event is to be held, free of charge, at the library in Medstead and will include a workshop sharing memories of family and community. Additionally, this is to be followed with celebrations at the community hall later in the evening. Important to note is that the event has been postponed, not cancelled, and residents are still awaiting its arrival.

On a more optimistic note, the highly anticipated talk May 4 with critically acclaimed author, Lisa Guenther. The event, including wine, fruit and cheese, is to take place from 6:30 - 8 p.m. Attendees will hear excerpts from the work

of Guenther, an author from Livelong. Guenther’s breakout novel, Friendly Fire, has received much applause and the event is a proud opportunity for Medstead to a writer of this distinction and local grounding. Guenther has been shortlisted for a New Book Award by a Saskatchewan Book Awards jury. Friendly Fire has its primary, and insightful, focus on rural life.

This event represents an opportunity for those who wish to learn more about novelization and the author. Saskatchewan is home to many beautiful

rural communities, and the passion of those involved in the events of the Medstead Library speaks well to the network and interpersonal relationships that these communities hold.

The library keeps moving forward, with the backing of a passionate public and an enthusiastic and involved board, to further plan and coordinate events. It is the spirit of this community, along with the hard work that goes into these events, that makes the community so successful.

Double birthday in Maymont

Medstead School hosts Battle of Vimy Ridge presentation

Medstead School's library, along with the Medstead Public Library, hosted a presentation in commemoration of the battle of Vimy Ridge.

April 27 the school opened its auditorium to the public and students.

The Battle of Vimy Ridge, which took place between April 9 and 12 of 1917 on the battlefields of France, is perhaps one of the best known battles in Canadian history.

Since then, the battle of Vimy Ridge has come

to be known as the first time Canada asserted itself as a nation on the world stage.

Medstead is home to direct descendants of veterans of this battle, giving further significance to this event and the need to remember our veterans and history.

A recent national commemoration for the centennial occurred April 9, with the Prime Minister speaking to its significance in Canadian history and identity.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the famous battle.

There was a great party in Maymont April 29 celebrating Mary Carpentier’s 80th birthday and Carol Deagnon’s 70th birthday.

The hall was full– just when you thought everyone was there, more people came in. Supper was potluck, with everything from turkey, ham, quiche and all the other good stuff, and dessert of cheesecakes, Saskatoon desserts, lemon pie, carrot cakes, plus a birthday cake to mark the occasion.

UCHS hosts career fair nity News

It is not often that farm families are excited to be using their combines in spring. However, a fall full of wet weather and early snow brought just such a reality to the agriculture sector in our area.

Numerous harvests yet to be combined from last fall were present on fields earlier this April and it appeared all was going well for those who still had this fall work to be done. Sadly, the return of wintery weather April 2328 was just another blow to the already frustrating circumstances farmers had been experiencing.

The weather is just one of many factors that contribute to the pressure a farmer faces and it is one of the many factors that influence a farm’s viability that are out of the farmer’s control. So once again, the agriculture industry is playing the waiting game with mother nature and until she decides it’s time for them to get back to work, they continue to be resilient as well as hopeful.

Please be mindful of our farmer friends – some of whom are still painstakingly working at getting last year’s crop off before they begin seeding this year’s crop – there will be additional equipment on the highways so exercise patience when travelling.

Vandals have decided to tarnish the town with their unsightly graffiti at various places around town. Vandalism prevention requires a group effort of community members who choose to report unusual or suspicious activity as well as take measures to prevent vandalism in the first place.

Some measures that can be taken are installing bright security lights; fences around property and security measures, whether it be cameras, dogs or com-

munity watch. Vandalism is covered at the property owner’s expense or the taxpayer, so let’s all do our job to be proactive rather than reactive to the results of this crime.

The Unity fire department is once again passing their gratitude to groups, businesses or individuals who contributed money or equipment.

Updates included a SxS all-terrain vehicle, trailer and auxiliary equipment such as pump, water backpacks and lighting – all of which have already been put to use several times so far this spring. Hats off to our volunteer fire departments for their dedication to protective services for our community.

May will have an array of events that have something to offer for everyone. May 1 was the Heartland Health volunteer appreciation night, which is a very generous gesture for our community volunteers and they appreciate being appreciated.

May 6 the UK Royals are hosting a one-day softball camp for younger players. May 7 is the annual “Minor Ball Day” in Unity. UCHS Warrior football continue spring camps this week on Warrior field. May 10, the Unity Ag Society is hosting another “Ag ED day” at the Agriplex, offering numerous safety stations for kids to learn about the importance of safety.

May 12 the always popular Unity Farmer’s Market will celebrate another season starting this day at the Legion Hall. May 13 will see the official grand opening of the new Hollyhocks Greenhouse situated in downtown Unity.

May 17, UCHS will play host to the Living Sky School Division annual meeting and, with this year’s budget restraints, there is certain to be topics of interest for the public. Following the long weekend in May, Unity will be gearing up for the annual Western Days, which will be coming up the first weekend in June.

lowing the underground power line replacement which has challenged the limited parking spaces around the school. Staff has been thankful for the patience of all drivers during this adjustment phase. They are now into the last sports season of the year, as track athletes are preparing for upcoming meets that will lead up to local and district track meets with the hope of qualifying for spots at provincials.

Unity public school students are practising up for their upcoming track and field day. They will be looking for volunteers to work in the booth and be a group leader. There is always plenty of room on the grounds for supporters, too.

UPS students continue to contribute to their community as K-6 can choose to be part of Earthsavers, which collects recyclable material from lunches, waters school plants and reminds all students the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling.

Grade 6 students can choose to volunteer with the community meals on wheels program, where students are part of the team that delivers to seniors in Unity. Students participate in this program on assigned dates during their lunch hours.

Grade 5 and 6 students volunteer to monitor kindergarten, Grades 1, 2 and 3 students over lunch and assist with opening difficult packaging, clean up after lunch and assist younger students dress in their outdoor gear. May 8 is a PD day for the school.

Sunday, May 7 at 11 a.m. the families, sponsors, friends and congregation will gather to celebrate First Communion and Confirmation. In lieu of a bishop, Father Greg will preside at this celebration with us and confirm each of the children.

St. Peter’s is so grateful to have Father Gregory officiate this special ceremony and ask for God’s continued blessing upon them. Tuesday, May 16-17 join the Grade 6 students for an Evening of Improv.

All proceeds will go to the class field trip. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show at 7 p.m. Intermission entertainment will be provided by the St. Peter’s School Band. Tickets are $10 and are available

at the school office.

Multiple teams have registered in both baseball and softball divisions.

The Unity Soccer Club is ready to hit the fields, too, so there should be plenty of outdoor action to take in about town, once the weather behaves.

The museum is looking for a donated or borrowed camper trailer to be used for 2-4 weeks for volunteer work. Call Pat Uzelman at 306-228-2225 if you are able to help out.

The museum will soon be holding “opening day” activities.

Saturday, April 22, was Earth Day around the world. The elementary students had planned to do their annual yard cleanup, but due to the rain and snowfall, the cleanup was postponed.

The recent snowfall also put a damper on the high school’s track and field practices. Hopefully, these can start again next week.

Badminton season has concluded. Both age categories, junior and senior, attended their conference playoffs in North Battleford last week. There was some extremely strong competition, but none of the teams advanced to the district level.

Thanks to Mrs. Brehon and Mrs. Walker for coaching the teams this year. Also thanks to Mr. Nickell for helping with

some of the practices. Special thanks to the parents who were able to drive the students to their playoffs.

As a windup to their season, Mrs. Brehon purchased pizzas and the junior players were treated to an end of season lunch.

OBITUARIES LANE: Evadne (Eva) Lane was born in 1923 in Jamaica, West Indies. She was trained there in nursing and midwifery, and took advanced studies in these subjects after moving to England in 1954. In 1958 she moved to Paradise Hill. Saskatchewan, where she was employed as a nurse. She joined the Battlefords Union Hospital in 1960 as a clinical instructor in obstetrics. She became Assistant Director of Nursing in 1962 and in 1984 took the position of Director of Nursing Services she held till she retired. Evadne has been a member of the Saskatchewan Registered Nursing Association (SRNA) since 1959 and a member of the Battlefords Chapter of SRNA since 1960. Evadne became a member of The Battlefords Horticulture Society in 1964. She was a Director of this society from 1976 - 1979, served as First Vice President from 1979 - 1981, as President from 1981 - 1983 and remained as Director from 1983 - 1985. Evadne has assisted with the planning and setting up horticultural shows and meetings. She has also served as an exhibitor and clerk at local and provincial shows. She became a Director of the Saskatchewan Horticultural in 1980 at Lloydminster. Elected First Vice President in 1983 in Regina and appointed President in January 1984 to February 1985. ___________________________________________________ WILLIAMS: Madeline Williams (nee De’Blois), of Sherwood Park, AB, formerly of North Battleford SK, passed away April 21, 2017, at the age of 92 years. IN MEMORIAM WAWRYK: Merilyn Wawryk (82) passed away on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, Sask. Merilyn was born to parents Edward and Anne Bouskill on July 7, 1934.

She graduated and worked as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse at the Saskatchewan Hospital in North Battleford.

She married Mike Wawryk on Nov. 1, 1958 and they farmed a portion of the Ed Bouskill land as well as the former John Snyder homestead.

Merilyn was a supportive wife of a farmer – a tough and vital role. They raised three children in Richard: Cheryl, Donna and Dennis. Merilyn enjoyed cooking, baking, canning, gardening and reading. She did cross stitch, was a talented seamstress, a knitter and loved to crochet as well. Merilyn was always willing to help others out in any way she could and volunteered on the School Board, Home Care Board, the Curling Club, 4-H Club and the Rec Board for many years. She also served on the town council in Richard. Her quiet competence and dedication to these organizations were her greatest attributes. Merilyn loved spending time with her young grandchildren and they were a great source of joy to her bringing out a side of her that many people never saw. Merilyn was predeceased by her parents Edward and Anne, sisters Ethel, Irene, Donalda, brother Dennis and twin grandchildren Derek and Craig. Merilyn will be lovingly remembered by her husband Mike, her children: Cheryl, Donna (Rob) and Dennis (Penni); grandchildren: Jeff, Kristin, Blake, Kyle, Nathan, Tyson, Kimberly and Allison. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 11:00 am at Richard Hall, Richard, SK. followed by the interment at Richard Cemetery. Lunch and fellowship will follow at Richard Hall. Volunteer Opportunities Credit Union gives presentation on fraud “On call” volunteers

Cribbage was played Monday April 24 High Score went to Danice Newton and low to Ruth Enwright. Lunch was provided by Dorothy Schwartz.

Bingo was played at the centre on Wednesday April 26th with Joan Smith and Margret MacEachern doing the calling. Lunch supplied by Jean Hartman Thursday April 27 the Saskatchewan Seniors Fitness Association held their annual meeting and fun day at the centre. There were 35 people in attendance at this event. 18 of

which bowled in the morning and winners being Ladies high Denise Newton, Mens high Walter Garnats.

Partners were Don Nichols and Mary Ramsay. Visitors were from North Battleford, Live Long, Edam, Meota, Rosetown, Turtleford, CutKnife, Hafford and Maidstone.

Cribbage was played and won by Dorothy Schwartz with a perfect score in the 5 games played. Casino rummy was played and won by Joan Smith. Three young ladies from the local Synergy Credit Union gave a useful and informative talk on Fraud. If you are concerned about phone

Friesen who have completed their time with the Maymont dance club. They have provided many years of entertainment with their dancing skills and they will be missed.

Ruth Enright was pleased to have her grandson and family visit on the weekend, Miles and Penny Rosenthal and sons from Calgary.

They were at their mum and dad’s and Ruth joined them there. They were at Pine Island Suites

and had their picture taken with the horse team mural.

Duncan MacEachern took me to Cold Lake where we visited with Ken and Pam MacEachern. They had a very heavy snow fall and their yard still had about a foot of snow. They had also been without power for two days.

Ed, my old neighbor, did not recognize me the first time he saw me on the street in Melville on our recent visit. He claimed that now I have turned into a 100 per cent old geezer, instead of a 50 per cent one.

Our old neighbor was gracious towards us. He was cautious at first, not sure why we were visiting Melville. He seemed to be afraid that we might be coming back to town to stay. When that fear turned out to be empty, he was genuinely glad to see us.

It is not exactly fun to hear the questions “Do I know you? Who are you again? Were you talking to me?” It is humbling

not to be recognized by the people you speak to first. Sometimes, there may be a change in you or them. There could also be the suspicion that the other person does not want to recognize you on purpose. A person can be seen with delight or ignored as just another person you don’t know, and do not need to know.

The fame of Jesus was part of his downfall. His raising of Lazarus from the dead had the attention of all the people of Jerusalem. Because of

his growing popularity, his enemies planned to execute him on Friday.

He was a threat to them, as the religious authorities over the people.

Jesus was crucified and buried in a tomb on Friday. His disciples and supporters could not recognize God’s power at work in these events.

They were grieving Je-

sus’ death, disappointed that his death surely meant he could not be the Messiah, as they had hoped.

On the third day after Christ’s death, on the first day of the week, two men, supporters of Jesus, were walking from Jerusalem to the village of Emmaus. A man also walking along the road joined them on their journey, and asked them what they were discussing so earnestly.

The two men did not realize the stranger walking with them was Jesus. The men shared their confusion about the tomb being found empty early that morning. They had been close

to Jesus but could not make sense of all the things that had happened to him.

The stranger showed them from Scripture that Jesus, the Christ, needed to suffer, die and rise again. They began to see God’s purpose and glory concerning Jesus, instead of being stuck in their grief and confusion.

Later, as the stranger was about to eat with them, they realized that it was Jesus. How often do we go along in life grieving over events we cannot understand or change? Jesus will open the scriptures to us, to give us comfort and peace, if we allow him to do so.

Residents attend annual sports weekend

Pat Chapman celebrated her 90th birthday at the Pioneer Hall in North Battleford on April 15 with an afternoon tea followed by a family supper.

It was a good turn out of friends and family, with many travelling from out of province. Special guests seated at the head table with Pat were Shirley Tebay, Esther Chapman, Dorothy Ray,Reine Lessard, Mae Johnson, Muriel Tebay and Linda Ard. Congratulatory messages were presented by Pat’s daughter, Carol Bowman, from Prime Minister Trudeau, the Governor General of Canada and other political dignitaries, for reaching this milestone birthday.

Added entertainment was Pat’s 8-year old great grandaughter Adlynn Wandler, from Fort St John, BC., who performed several highland dances. Pat thoroughly enjoyed her celebration and thanked everyone for joining her on her special occasion.

Contract bridge April 17 in Meota found top score went to Eric Callbeck and second high was Vern Iverson. The following evening the top team was Vern Iverson and Gerry Fernandes, second high were Eric Call-

beck and Maureen Campbell and third were Donna and Cletus Scherman.

There were five tables in play at the Do Drop In April 21. Top score was

by Vern Iverson and Shari Pearson (Lloydminster), second were Shirley Tebay and Terry Neale and third were Barbara Soloninko and Pat Chapman.

The purple finches and juncos are back, makes for interesting viewing at the feeders.

The swans are on the move north to their breeding grounds, but stop for a few days here and there along the way. There were sightings at the south end of Jackfish Lake and on a slough on the way to Rabbit Lake on Saturday.

Linda Ard and I went over to the Community supper at Rabbit Lake Saturday and visited with Doreen Baynes and Jean Walker at the Lodge afterwards.

There were a few folks at supper that we knew, but not many. The meal was very good and lots of it even though they had a goodsized crowd.

Another successful community luncheon was held April 21 with a full house of hungry folks. With the snowbirds back home and some people out from the city it meant setting up more tables to accommodate the people. Pearl and

There is a downside to this story as Pearl and Arie have sold their house and will be leaving Meota for a site where Arie doesn’t have to mow the lawn or shovel snow. She has promised to be here for one more lunch on May 19. We can only hope someone will pick up where Pearl leaves off as it is a profitable social venture we are accustomed to attending and love to take part in.

Shuffleboard was played at the Do Drop In April 22 with 18 participants. Top score was by Arlene Walker and Ken Tucker, then Stella Rendle and Maurice Bru, third were Louise Haubold and Gerald Hilliard. Potluck lunch was a pot of clam chowder and a pot of rice with meat balls and gravy, with a nice variety of desserts. There was a nice setting and snack foods and coffee were available all day.

The swans were still at the south end of the lake on Saturday, April 29, lots of them, so very pretty. Sightings of the whooping cranes have been reported, this is an exciting experience as they make their way northward.

Monday evening contract bridge in Meota found top score by Warren Iverson and second was Joyce Antoine. No bridge Tuesday night but Thursday in the city had top score by Lucille and Bernard Gregoire, followed by Glen and Julie Moore and tied for third were Donna Scherman and Gerry Fernandes along with Vern Iverson and Jim Fraser.

The STC rally, to try to keep our provincial buses, is being held at the office of the MLA at 1991 – 100 St. in North Battleford May 12 from 12:15 – 12:45 p.m..

My granddaughter Jordan Calladine of Lethbridge was one of the recipients of a donation from the Royal bank of $150 to invest back into her community in the Canada Day celebrations.

She then donated it to an elementary school toward their year end activities and help fund their annual ‘One school – One book’ project.

As reported by Arlene Walker: April 28 Svend and Cora Christiansen, Rita Peterson, Janice Morton, Arlene Walker and Vernon Iverson travelled to Red Deer for the annual sports weekend.

This is held with Son’s of Norway lodges in Alberta and Saskatchewan each year. We enjoyed the card games, tile rummy, kubb and darts. About eighty members attended and over the years we are almost like family, happy to see one another and catch up on the news. All the meals were great with a banquet on Saturday evening, hilarious entertainment and dance music. They had a large silent auction, with these proceeds helping cover their

expenses. Next year the sports weekend will be held in Lethbridge, Alta.

Friday, April 28 was the day that Meota Seniors hosted guests from Edam club for the noon meal and afternoon of entertainment.

It turned out that there were nearly as many people from Edam as Meota.

The highlight was a talk after lunch, by Jerry Iverson, who has lived here all

his life, about the history of Meota, along with a map showing areas he referred to. The most interesting information to me was the fact Meota was first built where the golf course now is, but when the railroad came through further west, it then moved to the area where it now sits. He mentioned the Carlton Trail ruts, the buffalo jump, a skull being found, and many sites of interest.

There was lunch and coffee for those still around, to close a pleasant afternoon.

Rivers West recognizes volunteers with banquet

The 2017 Rivers West volunteer recognition banquet was held April 25 in Paradise Hill with a full house of award winners, their families and friends.

The evening started out with welcoming speakers by the Mayor, and executive from Rivers West Board.

The meal was buffet style.

Many speakers followed and the winner was called

up to receive their plaque.

Maureen Campbell of Meota was acknowledged for ‘All-around Volunteer of the Year’ for her service of “doing for others.”

She was supported by her brother Clayton and his wife Diane from North Battleford as well as neighbours Beth Joseph and Gwen Lacerte and Lorna Pearson from Meota.

The last item was a video presentation showing the story of their eight years of

preparing for and the building of their 5 million dollar community complex, the years it took to accomplish it.

The building opened on Nov. 29, 2016. It is 19,000 square feet and includes a daycare, conference room, gym, kitchen and bathrooms. It is attached to the High School for easy access for students for extracurricular activities. It is indeed a project the community is very proud of.

The National War Memorial (Ottawa, Ont.) A tribute to the Canadians who fought for peace and freedom over the last 150 years In Canada’s capital city, the National War Memorial stands as a tribute to all Canadians who served our country during times of war. Every year on Remembrance Day, veterans, soldiers and civilians come together at this landmark to formally honour the many men and women who valiantly fought for the cause of peace and freedom throughout our nation’s history.

The National War Memorial—titled The Response—was originally unveiled to the public in 1939 to commemorate the Canadian soldiers who died in service during the First World War. In 1982, the monument was rededicated to also honour those who served in World War II and the Korean War. It was rededicated once again in 2014, this time to commemorate all Canadians who ever served and ever will serve Canada during times of war. There are five sets of dates inscribed on the cenotaph, each representing one of the five major conflicts in which Canada has been involved.

The South African War (1899–1902) Also called the Boer War, this conflict between the British and Dutch descendants in South Africa marked Canada’s first official participation in an overseas war. More than 7,000 troops were dispatched, many of whom fought in key battles. Canada suffered 267 fatalities in the Boer War. World War I (1914–1918) More than 650,000 men and women from Canada and Newfoundland fought in WWI. More than 66,000 died and another 172,000 were wounded in battle. Significant contributions to efforts at Passchendaele, Vimy Ridge and Ypres, among many others, led to Canada’s inclusion in the Treaty of Versailles. Many believe this was a turning point in the development of a national Canadian identity, a notion that began to solidify as a result of our immense sacrifice during this war.

World War II (1939–1945) Over the course of WWII, more than 1.1 million Canadians and Newfoundlanders served in uniform as part of the Allied war effort. More than 45,000 died and 55,000 were wounded. Given our scant population of 11 million at the time, this contribution is all the more substantial.

The Korean War (1950–1953) The 26,000 Canadian troops who fought in the Korean War made up one of the largest contributions (in proportion to total population) of all United Nations countries involved. Canada lost 516 soldiers during the conflict.

The Afghanistan War (2001–2014) The military operations in Afghanistan that stemmed from the September 11, 2001 terror attacks saw Canada’s largest deployment of soldiers since WWII. More than 40,000 men and women from across the country risked their lives in Afghanistan, and 158 perished. In addition to military activities, Canadians helped rebuild schools and distribute supplies to affected populations throughout the 13-year intervention.

CANADA’S MÉTIS COMMUNITY

The Métis Nation has many symbolic flags. Pictured here is the most common. It depicts an infinity symbol on a blue background and has been given official status by the Métis National Council.

The Métis Nation emerged out of the intermarriage between European fur traders (mainly French) and First Nations women that occurred during the 17th and 18th centuries. Children born of these unions developed their own cultural practices that drew elements from both parents’ backgrounds. They even developed their own language, Michif, which usually combined French with Cree, Sioux or Ojibwa. This distinct group flourished in Red River, Manitoba, and spread west into Saskatchewan and Alberta.

Métis people played an important role in the developing fur trade, serving as a critical link between disparate cultures.

They were excellent trappers who helped establish trade routes and also participated in buffalo hunts. Often they were employed by either the Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) or the North West Company (NWC). However, with the Anglo-Canadian government gaining a stronger hold on North America and increasingly acquiring new territories from both the trading companies and First Nations groups, the Métis became increasingly marginalized. Territories once controlled by the Métis were wrested away from them, and members of the community were forced to comply with colonizing powers. This conflict ultimately led to the hanging of the famed Métis leader Louis Riel.

Today, over 450,000 Canadians identify as Métis, with the most significant populations distributed in Alberta. The Métis have made important contributions to the many spheres of Canadian society and culture. Well known personalities who descend from the original Métis include visual artist Christi Belcourt; writer and filmmaker Maria Campbell; former NHL defenceman Sheldon Souray; architect Douglas Cardinal; and politician Carole James.
