Staff Some major upgrades are coming to the Battlefords and the Northwest region as SaskPower reinvests in the electrical system.

In a news release Monday SaskPower announced the work includes upgrading portions of the power grid in areas including North Battleford, Lloydminster, Onion Lake, Paradise Hill, St. Walburg, Turtle

Lake, Glaslyn, Biggar, Kerrobert, Unity and Macklin and surrounding areas.

The total investment comes to $110 million, with $100 million estimated for new power stations in the Rutland, Edam, Superb and Golden Lake areas.

Some post-construction work is going on to connect those power stations to the system, and that is expected to be completed in early 2017.

Fortress Windows & Doors takes home top prize at BBEX Awards 2016

It was a big night for Fortress Windows & Doors at the 2016 BBEX awards held at the Dekker Centre in North Battleford.

They took home the Business of the Year category, the prestige category with the winner selected among all the finalists in the six open categories of awards.

Biggar MLA Randy Weekes, representing Dustin Duncan the minister for SaskTel, presented the Business of the Year BBEX award to Kevin Driedger, owner/ manager of Fortress Windows & Doors.

“It took me by surprise,” Driedger admitted.

But he says he feels the business has always done its best to provide good service to customers, quality products and a “positive atmosphere” for their staff.

He credited a “loyal customer base” for the success of the business.

“I’m so thankful for all the good customers. It’s really been a privilege to serve here,” he said.

There were eight awards categories overall and fierce competition for the 23rd annual awards, which were crafted by photographer Gilbert Katerynych.

There was a noticeable change this year in the presentation. Heath Gabruch who took on duties as MC from long-time MC David Dekker.

One reason Dekker was not the MC that he was accepting the 2016 Heritage Award, awarded this year to the Dekker family for their radio station involvement in the Battlefords, an involvement that went back to Harry and Christine Dekker and the Double Dekker Breakfast Club on CJNB radio.

David and the other members of the Dekker family took to the stage to accept the award.

“We are sincerely honoured and humbled to receive this award,” he said.

“When you have a family business, everyone in the family is involved, whether it’s directly or indirectly.

And that’s the reason why we have the entire family here for this award.”

The Heritage Award was the only category in which the recipient was announced prior to the event, recognizing pioneer and cornerstone business leaders who have demonstrated excellence over an extended period of time.

In the category of Community Contribution, the BBEX went to Lakeland Veterinary Services Ltd. Dr. Shawn Haas, owner-manager, accepted the award from Nicole Suberlak, branch manager, Scotiabank.

Other nominees are Anderson Pump House Ltd., Fisher’s Drug Store and Loraas Environmental Services.

For Micro Business the award went to Jewellery Connection Inc., with David Odishaw accepting the award presented

by Daniel Johnson of Innovation Credit Union.

The other nominees were Beaver Grill Express, Dream Realty Ltd., Maunula Electric Ltd. and Vitality Acupuncture and Massage.

For Marketing, the BBEX went to Gold Eagle Casino. Kerry Sapp, marketing manager, accepted the award presented by Norm Hochbaum, commercial account manager, Bank of Montreal.

Other nominees in the category were Access Communications Co-operative Ltd., Bridges Chevrolet Buick Ltd., Empress Furniture and Décor, Norsask Farm Equipment Ltd., North West College, Oil Can Charlie’s Ltd., Platinum Salon and Spa and River Valley Eye Care.

For New Business Venture, going to a business that operated for more than one but less than three years, the BBEX went to All Out Graphics & Design Ltd. Cory Hill, senior account manager, Business Development Bank of Canada, presented the award to owner Nicole O’Driscoll.

Criminal to take water for granted

Dear Editor Although I am not directly affected by the Husky Oil Spill on the North Saskatchewan River, I attended the meeting in North Battleford on Sept. 19 to hear what an independent primary assessment consultant had to say about the current and future concerns of the pollution of the North Saskatchewan River. I was surprised North Battleford residents were not more concerned about their water, by the very lack of attendance to hear firsthand what an independent consultant had to say and what needs to be done. I commend John Cairns for giving a fair report in the Sept. 22 issue of the Regional Optimist.

What people need to know is that the consultant recommended that people living near the river ought to use carbon filters on their showers and taps “just to be on the safe side.” He would be putting it on “his taps.”

What does that tell you? In the same paper, another article spouts off that the surface water is safe to use according to the Water Security Agency. So who are you going to believe? Why isn’t Husky and the provincial government coming forward with more data and information about what they are doing? Shouldn’t we be informed weekly about progress or lack thereof? It is our environment and us who will pay in the end with health problems.

This lack of response from North Battleford residents reminds me of how much people take their water for granted. I have been to many conferences and conventions over the years as an activist and concerned citizen.

But in 1983 a Associated Country Women of the World conference held in Vancouver left an indelible impression on me.

When the meeting adjourned for coffee break in the morning, of the 400 women in attendance, there was a lineup of more than 40 women standing outside the washroom facilities. When I finally got inside, there was a woman from Grenada sitting on the floor, crying her heart out. Nobody was paying any attention to her, so I asked what was wrong?

She told me that she was so overcome with the amount of beautiful, clear, clean water, just flowing down the drain by people brushing teeth, washing hands, flushing toilets that she broke down and cried.

She told me that she carries every drop of water that her family uses.

Since that experience, I don’t take water lightly. I don’t flush every time I use the facilities; if yellow let it mellow is the code of ethics I follow. The tap doesn’t have to run full blast either, and we certainly don’t all need a shower twice a day or every day.

If I lived in North Battleford, I would expect Husky’s insurance to pick up the tab for carbon filters for every residence. I don’t want to be another statistic like in 2000 when North Battattleford experienced cryptosporidium.

Hold Husky Energy accountable Dear Editor While there is no use crying over spilled oil, the river has to be cleaned up. Recently, hydrogeologist Ricardo Segovia presented his primary assessment of the Husky oil spill in the North Saskatchewan River.

Segovia was hired by a diverse group of organizations that required an independent assessment on the impact on the water and the river. A month after the spill, he and his team travelled from Tobey Nollet Bridge near the spill site to Cumberland House taking sediment samples.

The specific polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at the bridge and Cecile Ferry demonstrated that the oil had travelled at least that far.

Segovia explained the oil and the diluents that remain would have clumped with other matter and sunk to the riverbed. Any disturbance to the sediment may continue to release hydrocarbons that are known carcinogens.

Segovia said he would install carbon filters in his home

for drinking and bathing purposes to further assure safety.

Prince Albert received $5 million “in good faith” from Husky for the City’s huge undertaking to supply citizens and businesses with potable water due to the contamination of the river. On Sept. 19, two months after the spill, the City is once again drawing water from the North Saskatchewan River with assurances that it is safe to use.

Water is life and the oil spill will have long-term impacts on all life. We need to hold Husky and governments accountable and insist that this toxic mess be cleaned up. Contact Husky at http://www.huskyenergy. com/contactus/ and speak to your elected representatives.

Dear Editor In reference to “We’re happy to let police do their jobs,” Regional Optimist Sept. 29.

Gun one down? Gun one down!

Good grief, one change and my letter has overtones of the scenario for a cheap United States gangster film.

Gun one down, gun them down, gun anybody down, is not in my vocabulary.

Regarding the out of work men wandering the country in the 1930s, mostly decent men, I wrote “… if the farmer or his wife decided to GET one down” referring

to the fact that at one time guns were hung over the back door and might be used to scare away would-be crooks by firing in the air. That would usually be done with a shotgun.

My line after that was “Now, were the farmer to do so, he would likely be the one charged.”

Yes if he were indeed “to gun one down,” I expect he would!

What about carbon capture?

While provincial and federal environment ministers were meeting in Montreal, to discuss carbon taxes, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau trumped their discussions by announcing in Parliament, at the same time, he would be imposing a national carbon tax.

Newfoundland and Saskatchewan environment ministers walked out.

Premier Brad Wall was aghast in his response. “I cannot believe that while the country’s environment ministers were meeting on a so-called collaborative climate change plan, the Prime Minister stood in the House of Commons and announced a carbon tax unilaterally.

“This meeting is not worth the CO2 emissions it took for environment ministers to get there.

“The level of disrespect shown by the prime minister and his government today is stunning.

This is a betrayal of the statements made by the prime minister in Vancouver this March. And this new tax will damage our economy.”

For all those talking heads around the country who seem to think Wall doesn’t give a damn about the whole CO2 thing, they are dead wrong. If I stand on my roof, I can see the $1.5 billion investment into carbon capture and storage this province made in recent years, about $1,300 for every man, woman and child. Sure, it took a while for the kinks to be worked out, but the Boundary Dam 3 Integrated Carbon Capture and Storage Project works.

It is, right now, preventing more than 2,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each and every day, and still allows us to burn coal for power.

Ontario shut down its coal, and created a horrible green power strategy that has doubled bills, pays huge subsidies to wind and solar generators while selling excess power for next to nothing to American markets. Now Alberta is on the same track, shutting its coal fleet down in coming years, assuming the NDP is around long enough in government to make it happen.

So Saskatchewan has taken the risk, put down the money and it is working. But will we get credit for it?

Former Saskatchewan environment minister Herb Cox pointed out something this past summer after a tour of the

carbon capture facility.

Paying for this plant has been something of an implicit tax for Saskatchewan’s people. Indeed, they did pay for it, through our Crown-owned utility.

And they will pay for it again and again, if carbon capture is implemented on the other generating units.

What most people don’t seem to cotton onto is that this initial project was for just a small portion of the power plant, one generator unit out of six (the two oldest and smallest have now been retired, so now it’s out of four units).

There’s still another three units to go at Boundary Dam, two at Poplar River and one at Shand.

to retrofit all these coal plants with carbon capture units, we might be looking at a $7 to $10 billion investment, maybe more.

Doing so would dramatically cut our carbon dioxide emissions, but would be such a strain on the province’s finances, it could be unbearable.

The decisions on the next Boundary Dam units need to be made in the next few years.

Would a carbon tax, implemented by Ottawa, but payable internally to the province, be used to finance such a program? If so, would it be a satisfactory response to the feds?

Or do they just want to see our economy ground to a halt, like the Ontario Liberal government has been striving to do to their province for years?

Will we have to pay for retrofitting our coal plants and pay a carbon tax on top of that? If so, maybe we should just build a massive nuclear plant near Estevan instead, using the Rafferty reservoir for cooling.

Saskatchewan has already walked the walk.

We’ve spent huge money on reducing carbon dioxide emissions. How much will be enough?

New Beginnings

$1 Million donor for Saskatchewan Hospital NB campaign Staff Those involved with the Saskatchewan Hospital New Beginnings campaign had big smiles last week.

It was announced Friday that an anonymous donor from southern Saskatchewan has made a $1 million donation to the campaign, which goes towards furniture and equipment at the new hospital.

“This is truly an amazing act of generosity,” said Corinne Bernier Delainey, fundraising lead for the New Beginnings campaign, in a statement Friday.

“The patients and staff of the current Saskatchewan Hospital are thrilled with the extremely generous gift toward purchase of the equipment and furniture they need for the new hospital currently un-

der construction in North Battleford.”

“When we told the patients and staff of the donation, huge smiles erupted on their faces.

Everyone was really excited, astonished and overwhelmingly grateful,” said Lynda Shynkaruk, director of Saskatchewan Hospital.

The fundraising campaign has an ambitious $8 million target to reach for the new facility. This latest donation means that more than $1.13 million has been raised to this point.

Construction of the new 284-bed facility is to be completed by June 2018.

While construction costs for the new hospital are fully funded by the provincial government, fundraising must cover the cost of equipment and furnishings, as is the case for

other health care projects in Saskatchewan.

“We are deeply grateful for all of the donations received so far,” said Delainey. “The million dollar contribution from a donor in the southern part of the province speaks to how broadly the services of Saskatchewan Hospital have reached over its more than a century of care and treatment of patients from all over Saskatchewan.”

“The hospital truly is a provincial facility,” added Delainey. “That is why our campaign is provincewide. We are optimistic that people, organizations and businesses from throughout Saskatchewan will open their hearts to meet the needs of these most vulnerable of individuals and support them by donating to the campaign.”

Town council approves new monetry policies

Town of Battleford financial policy was on the table at Monday’s regular town council meeting.

Following an audit, it was observed that no formal policy regarding credit card usage by town employees existed. Town administration recommended, following the auditor’s letter of recommendation, to approve a municipal credit card policy, which passed with unanimous assent.

Another policy was

brought in front of council regarding the Town of Battleford’s investments.

Unlike the administration credit card policy, which was recommended following observed deficiencies in existing policy in the auditor’s report, Finance Officer Steven Permantier said town administration felt it appropriate to also bring forward a formal investment policy.

According to the administrative report presented at council “the policy is to govern the management of the Town of Battleford’s surplus

funds and investment portfolio striving for the optimum utilization of its cash resources within statutory limitations and the basic need to protect and preserve capital, while maintaining solvency and liquidity to meet ongoing financial requirements.”

The report goes on to state that the intent of the proposed policy is to “invest municipal funds in a manner (that would) provide the highest return with the maximum security while meeting the daily cash flow demands of the municipality.”

This past weekend saw Culture Days take place in North Battleford with the Allen Sapp Gallery and the Don Ross Centre hosting many of activities the weekend. Local organizers said this was the first time they had put on the event in the community, and there was an aboriginal theme to much of what took place. The Allen Sapp Gallery was a hub of activity, with bannock baking taking place outdoors Saturday. Other activities were moved at the last minute to Don Ross Centre due to the inclement weather conditions outdoors. There, painting and arts and crafts activities took place as well as a powwow with a grand entry and traditional dancing the highlight of the day of events. The Battlefords Immigration Resource Centre held a Cultural Friendship Night at Territorial Drive Alliance Church Friday between 6 and 10 p.m. It was held also part of Culture Days. Those in attendance Friday took part in crafts, games, drawing and other cultural activities, representing countries such as the Philippines, Australia, Korea and Japan.

Henry Beaudry, veteran, prisoner of war survivor and renowned artist, dead at 95

A renowned local artist and veteran of the Second World War has passed away.

Henry Beaudry, who was born on Poundmaker First Nation and who lived on Mosquito and Sweetgrass First Nations died this week at age 95.

Beaudry will be remembered for his service to the country and as a POW survivor, as well as for his many and wide-ranging works of art.

Beaudry’s works have been shown in galleries across western Canada, including a major display at Wanuskewin as well at the Allen Sapp Gallery, the Museum of Natural History in Regina and other venues. Battleford Furniture has displayed many of Beaudry’s works at its location.

He was born Henry Poundmaker Beaudry in 1921, a great-grandson of the legendary Chief Poundmaker.

His friend, artist Darwin Atcheynum, said big things were predicted for Beaudry right from an early age. An old man, the story goes, pointed out Beaudry in a group of kids and said “this guy’s going

to travel all over the world, he’s going to see a lot of stuff, a lot of tough things.”

“Sure enough,” Atcheynum said, “he went through his life doing everything that old man said.”

Beaudry is remembered for his combat exploits in the Second World War, as well as his prolific work as an artist.

He joined the armed forces after seeing a poster during a visit to Paynton.

The poster read: “Join the Army and see the world, and kiss the girls in every port.”

At age 19, he enlisted and eventually was posted to Italy.

During his tour of duty in Italy Beaudry was wounded, forcing a lengthy hospital stay. He was later captured in Ravenna, Italy, by the Nazis.

Beaudry was taken prisoner and sent to the infamous Stalag VII-A, the largest German prisoner of war camp during the Second World War. But in the course of being moved to another location, Beaudry escaped, along with a fellow Mongolian prisoner from the Russian army. After days walking in cold conditions Beaudry was taken in by a group of farmers who hid prisoners from the German

army.

Beaudry eventually wound up in Holland.

As the war wound down, Beaudry was taken in by the American forces and fought alongside them.

“The Great Spirit guided me all the way,” said Beaudry in an interview with the News-Optimist earlier this year.

After the war, Beaudry took up art on Mosquito First Nation, starting out doing drawings on paper but eventually moving into paintings.

The war years would be well represented by Beaudry in his artwork later on. One of his works depicts prisoners entering the Stalag VII-A prison camp. Another memorable work depicts him standing before German soldiers while being interrogated.

Beaudry signed each one of his paintings with a drawing of an eagle feather, a reference to the eagle feather he had kept with him during the war, but which he lost on the day he was captured.

Beaudry earned a living as an artist and his work came to the attention of Chris Odishaw of Battleford Furniture, who developed a strong friendship with Beaudry.

He met Beaudry for the

Henry Beaudry first time in 1979 when his parents first opened their furniture store and ultimately struck a deal with Beaudry where he would do paintings for him exclusively. Odishaw today owns a collection of Beaudry’s work numbered at around 1,300.

In an interview with the News-Optimist earlier

this year, Odishaw noted Beaudry’s prolific style of painting. His works included “a lot of early days, the early prairie days with the horses and the wagons and the firewood,” said Odishaw. And there were several that were warrelated.

Beaudry was entirely a self-taught artist. His

style has much in common with his contemporary, the late Allen Sapp, in that he painted “out of his mind and out of his memory,” Odishaw said.

Beaudry’s artwork made its way to the famous and powerful, with works presented to Queen Elizabeth and to Pierre Elliott Trudeau. He met Justin Trudeau in Saskatoon in 2013, when the future prime minister was in the city for the Canada Remembers Our Heroes Air Show.

A documentary on Beaudry’s life, entitled H. Beaudry: Covers the Earth Boy, has aired on outlets such as CTV, APTN and others in recent months.

Until the end, Beaudry continued to live independently on Sweetgrass First Nation although he did move into Villa Pascal for the winter months.

Plans are for Beaudry to be buried at Mosquito First Nation.

The Holodomor National Awareness Tour will be stopping at North Battleford Comprehensive High School Oct. 11 and 12,.

Students and the public will have an opportunity to view the travelling museum featuring a “mobile classroom” with theatrestyle seating.

The tour has been making its way across Manitoba and Saskatchewan this fall to raise awareness of the Soviet-inflicted famine, with stops in Prince Albert and Hafford before it heads to North Battleford Tuesday.

Eighty-four years ago Holodomor, the man-made famine that killed an estimated 2.4 to 7.5 mil-

lion Ukrainians, began.

For many Canadians with Ukrainian roots, awareness of Holodomor — literally translated to “death by hunger” — has been passed on by relatives who witnessed it. Yet, given its massive scale and the reverberating effect it’s had on survivors and their descendants, some still feel more can be done to remember the victims.

In 2008, Canada was the first country to officially recognize Holodomor as ethnic genocide of Ukrainians inflicted by the Soviet Union through starvation. Canada’s recognition of genocide is a rejection of the claim that the famine was simply a consequence of Soviet redirection of grain supplies.

Since 2008, 24 other na-

tions in addition to Canada have recognized Holodomor as genocide.

The Ukrainian Canadian Cultural Council, whose Battlefords branch helped organize the museum’s stop at local schools, has a goal of integrating this part of Ukrainian history into school curriculums. Paul Kardinal, a Battlefords Ukrainian Canadian Cultural Council member says that until relatively recently, Holodomor has not been “brought to the fore.” He says with this travelling tour, whose stops have often been at schools, more people — in particular younger generations — will learn about this troubling part of world history that affected many Ukrainian-immigrant Canadians.

amount of cash and a second cellphone were found on the floor of the driver’s compartment of the vehicle in a shopping bag. Alcohol was also located in the back seat of the car.

Funding cut to S’toon stabilization shelter Staff Officials with The Lighthouse have issued a statement expressing disappointment with the decision by the province to no longer fund the stabilization centre in Saskatoon.

The reason cited by the province was that the unit was unable to cover its costs. But in a statement issued Monday by the board and management of The Lighthouse, they made clear their unhappiness with the decision.

“We, the board, management and staff of The Lighthouse, are disappointed with the decision of the provincial government to not fund the stabilization shelter,” their statement read. “We believe that all factors needed to make this decision were not given, used or possibly considered. Therefore, given time they or the next government

will reverse this decision.”

The statement noted the impact the decision would have for the most vulnerable, including in North Battleford where The Lighthouse Serving the Battlefords is located.

“It is unfortunate that this decision impacts some of the most vulnerable in our community. To date in 2016, there have been over 440 unique individuals that have utilized the stabilization shelter.

“If Saskatoon and North Battleford want intoxicated people on the street or filling police cells, then this decision should stand. But we at The Lighthouse are concerned about the people living on the street – their mental health conditions may deteriorate, or worse, they may freeze.

“We have worked hard through our partnership with Saskatoon Health Re-

gion, and proved that our services lower the number of ER visits and improve the health and mental health of our clients. In fact, the report the provincial government refers to showed that for every $10 spent, we save the province $21.”

Despite this news, officials with The Lighthouse plan to keep searching for sustainable funding for their operations.

“The Lighthouse is constantly looking for better ways to serve our communities. Our dedicated staff work hard and care for the people we serve. It has been extremely hard to turn people away after this decision was released, but the current model of funding is not sustainable. Since we are dynamic and innovative we will continue to seek solutions to this problem.”

North Stars upend Mustangs again

Although the Mustangs were able to improve on their slim seven shot output in their loss to the North Stars on Saturday night with a 27-shot performance on the road, the North Stars applied pressure all night long and ended up with 45 shots on goaltender Hunter Arps.

“Getting pucks on net is something that was really important tonight along with getting good goaltending,” North Stars head coach and general manager Nate Bedford said. “Those two things were the keys to our win tonight.”

Joel Grzybowski continued his strong start to his rookie campaign in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, as he improved to 3-0 and now has a goals against average of 0.67 after making 26 saves.

According to North Stars captain Kendall Fransoo, it has all come down to execution.

“Going into all of the games so far we’ve been focussing on trying to limit their odd-man rushes, block shots and create turnovers at the blue line,” Fransoo said.

“Those are the three biggest things that we have been focussing on and it’s made us successful. We still have a long way to go though to work on some of those things and get better at them.”

“We’re struggling right now offensively,” Mustangs head coach and general manager Trevor Blevins said. “We’re squeezing our sticks a lot at the moment and wanting it really bad.

“In saying that, though, we can’t worry too much about the results. If we keep with the process and focus on doing things right, we will be rewarded for

that.”

The North Stars will be heading out on the road this weekend for a pair of games against the Flin Flon Bombers on Friday and Saturday.

It will mark the first time the two sides have squared off since last year’s SJHL semifinal, which saw the Bombers upset the North Stars in five games.

“We’re all pretty fired up about heading back there,” Fransoo said. “That loss last year is all in the back of our minds for the veteran players and it’s going to be nice to play them again.”

That marks the start of a five-game road swing for the North Stars. They will travel to Wilcox to play the Notre Dame Hounds on Oct. 13, visit the Weyburn Red Wings on Oct. 14 and wrap up their trip by taking on the Estevan Bruins on Oct. 15.

“Some of our best games that we have had so far this year have been out on the road to be honest with you,” Bedford said.

“I’m looking forward to it. I have my bags packed already.”

Tuesday was progressing like any other day of class at John Paul II Collegiate for Luke Reid.

That was until the Battlefords AAA Stars defenceman got a text from his mother and found out that he would be a part of Saskatchewan Under-16 team at the Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup in Calgary from Oct. 19-23.

“She sent her congratulations along with the roster and that’s pretty much when I knew that I had made the team,” Reid said.

“I was getting a bit nervous as I knew the team was going to be announced, but you can’t really worry about it too much. I just approached it like it was any other day.”

The 15-year-old from Warman underwent a lengthy process just to make it on to the roster.

Zone camps took place last season to determine the squads that competed at the SaskFirst Bantam Tournament in Regina back in April.

From there a group of 40 players competed in Wilcox for a week in August that helped to set the provincial team.

“I just tried to play my game as much as I could and listen to my coaches,” Reid said.

“My style of game is being a playmaker. I like to join the rush and create offence, along with being solid in my own end.”

by the Victoria Royals in the second round of the Western Hockey League Bantam Draft in May, also believes playing in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League with the Stars as a bantam-aged player last season has helped tremendously with his development.

“It’s really pushed me to be a better player,” Reid said. “We have a great group of guys in the room and they really help me to mature not just as a hockey player, but as a person also.”

“He’s got a lot of confidence now after playing here last year,” Stars head coach Jean Fauchon said.

“When I was talking with the guys from the SHA (Saskatchewan Hockey Association) he was one of a few players at the camp that had that midget experience. He showed a lot of poise with the puck and was able to make things happen while he was in Wilcox.”

Reid had 15 points in 43 games for the Stars last year and has an assist in three games this season.

Through five editions of the tournament, Saskatchewan has yet to win the Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup, which features provincial squads from British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba.

Buziak ranked by NHL Central Scouting Staff Braydon Buziak’s impressive start to his Western Hockey League career has garnered attention from the National Hockey League’s Central Scouting Bureau.

The Battleford product was given a ‘C’ rating on Tuesday in the preliminary players to watch list for the 2017 NHL Draft, which will take place in Chicago next June.

A ‘C’ rating means that a player is a candidate to be selected anywhere between the fourth and sixth round of the draft.

After signing with the Pats in September following a 19-point season with the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s Battlefords North Stars, Buziak has hit the ground running with four goals in his first four regular season games.

That puts him in a tie for third in the WHL heading into play Tuesday. He also shares the lead on the Pats with Anaheim Ducks prospect Sam Steel.

Buziak was one of five Pats players to make the list. Joining him were forwards Nick Henry, Jake Leschyshyn and Lane Zablocki, along with

goaltender Jordan Hollett.

Leschyshyn, who is from Grasswood, was one of three Saskatchewan players to be given a ‘B’ rating and is projected to be a second or third round pick.

The other players were Cale Fleury of Carlyle (Kootenay Ice) and Kole Lind of Shaunavon (Kelowna Rockets).

No players from the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League made the list.

Nolan Patrick of the Brandon Wheat Kings is the current odds-on-favourite to be the first overall pick.

Sharks making progress ahead of regular season

The Battlefords AAA Sharks won’t start their Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League season until Oct. 15 in Melville.

Although the rest of the league will already have the first games of their campaigns done by then, Sharks head coach Gary Berggren is hoping the extra preparation time will allow his team to hit the ground running.

“So far things are going well,” Berggren said. “We have a lot of new systems that we are trying to implement here so it’s been a work in progress.

“Our team has a lot of younger players that haven’t gone through stuff like this before, and we also have returning players who are getting used to ev-

erything. It will take some time, but things are moving in the right direction.”

The Sharks’ last preseason tune-up took place in Martensville Thursday, where they lost a 6-1 affair to the Prince Albert Northern Bears.

“The game was actually pretty even in the first two periods,” Berggren said.

“The shots were really close and we just had some bad luck around our net.

“We gave up a couple of bad goals to fall behind and then once we got down 4-0, it was tough for our younger players to get back into that competitive mindset after falling behind by that many goals. That’s something they will learn to overcome, though, as the season goes on.”

Prior to that game, the Sharks travelled to Portage La Prairie, Man. on Sept. 23-25 to take part in

the Central Plains Capitals Showcase Tournament.

They went 1-3 at the event with their lone win coming against the Interlake Lightning of Stonewall, Man. by a score of 3-1.

In their other games,

they dropped a close 1-0 decision to the Norman Wild, were shutout 3-0 to the host Capitals and fell 3-2 to the Eastman Selects of Winnipeg.

“We outshot all four teams that we played against but we had trou-

ble scoring when we got around the net in all of those games,” Berggren said.

“It just seemed like we had bad luck whenever we got a shot on goal or a bounce would go their way.

All in all though, it was a

good tournament.”

Through the five preseason games that the Sharks have played, one of the things that Berggren has been focusing on is how well the players are catching on to the new systems.

“We want to make sure that everything is good on that front before the regular season begins,” Berggren said.

“I thought our breakout play was really good in Portage and our penalty kill was a lot better when we played Prince Albert.

The power play hasn’t quite clicked yet and we still have some work to do on the forecheck, but things are progressing nicely.”

The Sharks will make their home debut at the Battleford Arena on Oct. 29 when the Notre Dame Hounds pay a visit for a weekend series.

learning experience for them early on but they were playing really well by the end of the tournament,” Crusaders head coach DeeJaye Hesselberg said.

“The progress that they made was unreal. There were some nerves early on but they got used to the rotations that they were doing and made a ton of progress. If we started like we

finished, we may have had a chance to win the whole thing.”

Unity defeated North Battleford Comprehensive High School in the final.

Both Crusaders teams will be back in action next weekend.

The girls’ squad is competing in Unity while the boys’ team is heading to Lashburn.

Home court advantage proved to be beneficial for the John Paul II Crusaders junior volleyball teams Saturday.

The Crusaders junior girls’ team finished in second place while the junior boys’ squad nabbed a third place finish during the

school’s annual junior volleyball tournament.

The Crusaders girls’ team finished in second place in round-robin play and defeated Hafford in straight sets in the semifinal, before they suffered a straight sets loss (25-27 and 23-25) to Unity in the championship game.

There were a number of takeaways that the John Paul II Crusaders and North Battleford Comprehensive High School Vikings girls’ soccer teams are looking to build off of after this past weekend’s tournament at Crusaders Field.

For the host Crusaders, a disappointing 0-2-1 outcome means there is still more for the squad to work on ahead of the regional tournament in two weeks time.

“It wasn’t the best weekend,” Crusaders head coach Amanda Hansen said.

“Our passing and scoring can get a lot better along with our communication, especially as we try to move the ball up the field.”

After playing to a scoreless draw against the Vikings Friday afternoon, the Crusaders suffered a 5-1 loss to Victorie’s Se Se Wa Hum and a 4-0 setback against Meadow Lake.

“Two days before the tournament we had an exhibition game against Maidstone and beat them 4-1,” Hansen said. “We were a lot more comfortable in that win than we were over the weekend.

“The results at home weren’t what we wanted at

all, but it gives us a good idea for what we have to do ahead of the regional tournament at Se Se Wa Hum on the 22nd.”

As for the Vikings, they hung in tough against Se Se Wa Hum before falling 4-0 and staged an impressive comeback in a 6-5 win over Meadow Lake.

“It was 1-0 for most of the game against Se Se Wa Hum but we just got unlucky in the last 10 minutes and they were able to pull ahead,” Vikings head coach Sebastian Prost said.

“We fell behind really early against Meadow Lake and the girls got into a bit of a mental funk. Then we started to make good

free kicks and we had great ball movement into our opponents’ end to start our comeback. The girls really showed how strong a team we can be if we just play our game.”

Although the Crusaders are scheduled to take place in the regional tournament, which will see the top two teams advance to the provincials in Prince Albert on Oct. 28-29, the Vikings are still debating whether or not they will take part in the event.

“We have a number of multi-sport athletes on our team and their schedules tend to get a lot busier as we get further into the fall and winter,” Prost said.

In September, Lefa Sproxton and five companions shared the pleasure of walking the 116 kilometres from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. This is the final stage of the Camino Frances (the French way).

The first pilgrim walked this path at the beginning of the ninthcentury (814) when the tomb of the apostle St. James was discovered in the Iberian Peninsula.

In 1135 a medieval guide book, the Codex Calixtinus. described the Camino Frances in detail.

Since that time pilgrims from all parts of the world and for many different reasons have walked the Camino. Our sixday journey began with early rising to European breakfasts of bread, cheese, meat and fruit, sometimes yogurt and certainly strong coffee. The day would see us pass

through rural countryside and small villages, many of which were medieval in nature. We walked by corn fields, small farms and through forests of eucalyptus trees. Frequently, blackberries covered the bushes on both sides of the path.

We watched local folk go about their business — the bread man delivering to homes, an elderly woman herding her cattle through the streets, a gardener eager to share his beautiful tomatoes with us. We crossed rivers on medieval bridges and stopped at age-old signposts marking the way and offering protection to the early pilgrims.

The infrastructure that has grown in support of these pilgrims is important to the local economy. Coffee shops, restaurants, accommodation and opportunities to purchase trinkets abound. Mid-day would find us at one of these stops sharing a meal and stories with fellow travellers.

The Camino de Santiago Continued from Page 17 Evenings were spent exploring each new town, doing laundry, eating a hearty pilgrim’s dinner and usually sharing a bottle of wine while we recalled the day’s pleasures.

Everyone was walking to the same destination, the Cathedral at Santiago de Compostela, where the relics of St James are housed.

The travellers we met were from all parts of the world, walking alone, in pairs, in small groups and in organized tours. Some sang or chanted as they walked, others visited and many walked alone for much of the day. Of course, some talked on their phones.

Nearly everyone sported a scallop shell. The story goes that early in the years of the Camino, pilgrims from afar would enjoy the seafood at Santiago and then carry a scallop shell back with them. The way at that time was very dangerous and the scallop shell offered protection. No one would interfere with someone who had made such a holy journey. Now the shell has become the emblem of the walk. The signposts and directional signs are decorated with it.

Arriving at Santiago,

the pilgrim passes through new developments and contemporary shopping areas. But eventually she arrives at the old city. The “old city” of Santiago de Compostela is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking the narrow streets between the very old tall buildings feels like stepping back through the centuries. This part of the city is beautifully preserved.

The Cathedral is located here. It is a magnificent building whose sole purpose for existence is the safekeeping of the relics of St. James. Mass is held several times a day and if the pilgrim is fortunate the Botafumeiro performance will be witnessed This is one of the largest thuribles (sensors) in the world, reportedly weighing 80 kilograms and measuring 1.60 metre in height. Forty kilograms of charcoal and incense are placed inside the thurible before it is lit.

Eight red-robed men (tiraboleiros) are required to pull the ropes that swing it. At the top of the swing, the Botafumeiro reaches heights of 21 metres. We were fortunate to be present at one of the masses where the Botafumeiro was used. For many pil-

grims this is a highlight of their journey.

Although the visit to the cathedral marks the end of the Camino, many pilgrims walk on to the sea. Our group chose a bus tour to Cabo Finisterre, the “end of the world.”

It was so named because when the ancients saw the sun drop down behind the sea they believed that was where the world ended, hence finis terre, the end of the world. This coast is also known as the Coast of Death. The wild Atlantic Ocean has been responsible for many sailors’ deaths. It is said tradition demands the pilgrims burn their clothes, discard the worn boots, build a cross in gratitude and watch the sun set. It has also been suggested that this is where the pilgrim takes a bath after the long walk. Our group declined all of these opportunities and simply enjoyed the beautiful location.

It was a wonderful journey including sights, sounds and smells, all new and intriguing. Time was spent alone and with companions. There was time to think and time to visit.

It was an adventure to be grateful for.

Apiary sets up extracting operation in arena

Looks like we are in for nasty weather this coming week. Yikes. Snow will reach our area, melt and hopefully Indian Summer will give us a few weeks of decent weather. Got your winter gear ready to wear just in case you might need it?

CanPhill Apiaries from Spiritwood are renting the Mayfair arena kitchen to process their honey. This business consists of five fellows who work full time. The bee business is a second income for these recent immigrants.

Eventually they plan to expand their sites to the Mayfair area, so next year one will not have to travel

Maymont was fortunate to have Jim Beaudoin entertain this past Saturday to a large enthusiastic crowd.

He grew up on a farm near Maymont and has many relatives and friends who still reside in the area.

A delicious roast beef supper was served before the show, so it made a nice evening out. I was surprised at how many people from Alberta travelled for this event. Jim goes to Nashville to cut his CDs and there were plenty to purchase that evening.

Mona Bruynooghe gave an interesting talk on Operation Christmas Child this past Saturday

at Crandleberry’s Restaurant. People from various clubs attended, as did four of us from Mayfair’s Save a Third World Child. We plan to fill the colourful shoe boxes supplied by Samaritan’s Purse. These are usually distributed around Christmas to poor children who do not get gifts.

A free of $7 per shoebox helps cover the shipping, administrative and ministry costs associated with this cause. Sending a box that size to South America would cost approximately

$120. Through bulk transportation discounts and the help of thousands of volunteers, the shipping costs are reduced. For more information go online to SamaritansPurse.ca. The Alliance Church on Territorial Drive has shoeboxes for interested individuals or groups who would like to participate in this rewarding program and once filled, these boxes can also be dropped off the third week in November at the Alliance Church.

The new Mosaic Stadium in Regina is state of the art according to the crowd who attended university football this past weekend.

Entrepreneur assists club with fundraising Submitted

Beginning in the spring of 2016, local entrepreneur Nathan Puffalt began working with Battlefords Boys and Girls Club Executive Director Nicole Combres on marketing strategies for the club.

Of primary focus was the club’s $40 for 40 campaign.

“With the hit in the economy, we are seeing decreased revenue while the need for our services increased,” Combres explains.

“With zero guaranteed dollars year to year and no government funding, we had to get creative in how we generate revenue and fi-

nancial stability.”

To help celebrate the club’s 40th anniversary, a monthly donation option for the citizens of the Battlefords has been created.

“While the campaign speaks to a $40 monthly contribution, any dollar amount makes a difference in the lives of our children.

If someone is able to donate $1 per month, they are making a difference,” Combres says.

Puffalt has donated more than 60 hours of his time in designing this campaign across social media, video and print.

“With a background in nonprofit management, I have always felt the need to give back to the

community and what better way than to give back to the future of our community,” says Puffalt.

“I invite any other non-profits and charities in the region to get in touch with me on how I may be of service to them as well.”

While the economy is suffering Battlefords Boys and Girls Club finds the need for the programs offered is increasing. A new fundraising campaign, $40 for 40, has been launched by Executive Director Nicole Combres, with assistance from Nathan Puffalt of NP Marketing Direction.

Activate is active at UCHS

SaskTel is gearing up for the new school year with its I Am Stronger program.

In partnership with the Ministry of Education, SaskTel is encouraging youth to apply for a grant and help build awareness about bullying.

Unity Composite High School juaccessedSaskTel initiative two years ago when Alana Neil was seeking a way to kickstart the newly developed idea of a program in the school called Activate.

Alana, along with fellow students and guidance from teacher/parent committee members, successfully earned UCHS a grant from this program, which was used to initiate the Activate program, now in its third year.

Sasktel’s program is designed to influence the

change needed to stop the activities of bullying and cyber-bullying.

SaskTel acknowledges the products and services it sells may be used to conduct bullying activities.

“Bullying of any kind is unacceptable in our schools and we’re pleased to continue our work with SaskTel’s I Am Stronger program,” Education Minister Don Morgan said.

“As school starts again for the year, I encourage all students to think about how they can be leaders in their community” The I Am Stronger website offers information about the grant program and has a thorough section dedicated to resources for kids, teenagers, families and educators. It also includes the ability for victims of bullying or cyberbullying to get help and report bullying activity safely.

“Since the program

launched in 2014, we are excited to have offered 27 grants to date totaling $25,735,” said Ron Styles, SaskTel president and CEO. “We are pleased to assist with empowering our youth to turn their ideas into actions that positively influence social change in schools, communities and online.”

UCHS also hosted speaker/rapper Uncle Adams, a motivational speaker, rapper, role model and proclaimed counter bullying activist, last year. He created a special song/rap for the I Am Stronger campaign as well as talking to students about anti bullying tactics.

UCS students have used the definition for the word activate — to set in motion, to make active or more active, to organize or create — to define their program.

The Activate campaign empowers students to ac-

tivate personal well-being both emotionally and physically, starting with kindness towards one another.

Students continue to promote on their Twitter feed @UCHSActivate and newly developed Instagram page, along with life-size and regular-size posters in the school. Their message is also mass marketed throughout Saskatchewan through emails, Facebook pages and other platforms.

UCHS students kicked off another year of Activate by welcoming new Grade 7 students with positive and encouraging affirmations on their lockers as they arrived at school. An Activate team took part, along with their mascots, in the Warrior football Friday night lights game, showcasing their enthusiasm and encouraging students to become active participants and engaged in the program.

School sports are in full swing

Continued from Page 22 St. Peter’s School students have completed three weeks of school and already have students playing instruments, creating memorable art pieces, learning new math skills, practicing their literacy skills and understanding how important God is in their lives.

Thursday they will hold a Thanksgiving mass at 11 p.m. followed by a soup lunch. All students bring ingredients for the soup.

The school will recognize Fire Prevention Week with a fire safety presentation Oct. 11 at 9 a.m.

The cross-country team has attended meets in Wilkie and Unity. The team has been practicing regularly and attended a meet in Biggar before the Battle West District Finals in North Battleford Thursday. The Grade 6 students have been working on some soccer skills and go to Cut Knife on Friday for their annual soccer play day. The Grade 6 boys’ and girls’ volleyball will begin mid-October. Mr. Tyson Volk will be coaching the boys and Mrs. Worthington and Ms. Johnston will be coaching the girls.

The Grade 6 class will be supporting Operation Christmas Child with shoeboxes filled with items to be sent to Third World countries for Christmas. The Bargain Store in Unity will be collecting the boxes. Any purchases made at the Bargain Store

A Grade 6-8 youth group is forming this fall. Lucien and Candace Gaudet, are leading this group and have been doing this for three years. Youth Group will meet Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. at St. Peter’s School gym, or in the hall, if necessary. Every Monday before an event, members will be receiving a reminder call. Here are the dates until Christmas: Thursday, Oct. 11; Thursday. Oct. 25 All Saints Day Party; Nov. 8; Wednesday, Nov. 22; Dec. 6; Dec. 20 (Christmas party). They are also in need of parent volunteers who would be willing to bring a snack and to set up snacks. Students also had a busy cross-country season, a little soccer mixed in and will be starting volleyball for Division 2 students in the near future. UPS will participate in Fire Prevention Week activities.

At UCHS, Warrior football will be in action all of this month hosting their next game in Unity on

Oct. 14 after a two-game road series. Both junior and senior volleyball programs have seen success in their opening month of play. The junior boys’ and girls’ teams will take part in league on Wednesdays throughout the season Conference playoffs will take place in Unity. The top four teams will advance to districts in Cut Knife on Thursday, Nov. 3.

Senior girls’ volleyball league play takes place on Tuesdays and Unity will be hosting Oct. 25. The playoffs will begin with conference playoffs Nov. 5 followed by regional playoffs Nov. 12. Provincial playoffs are in Lanigan on Nov. 19.

UCHS has an archery club. Ms. Van De Meutter has earned National Archery in Schools Program certification through the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation. The program will be taught in Ms. Van De Meutter’s physical education classes and then offered to other students before school and at noon hours.

The drama program practises every Monday with three productions underway this year to be presented in December, January and March.

Curling registration is Oct. 11 and 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the curling club lounge. You can register as an individual, a duo or a team. Junior curling will be looking for some help for

when they start up again the first Monday in November, with regular Tuesday league/super league and Thursday league beginning the last week of October.

The 3 on 3 hockey program began Sept. 26 and will run into Thanksgiving weekend. All appears to be in line for another fantastic hockey season for Unity Minor Hockey, says UMH president Dan Feser.

He says, “Our enrolment numbers are close to the same as last year and, in hockey Canada wide, if you’re not going backwards it is considered progress.”

UMH will ice two initiation teams, a novice team including Wilkie players, two atom teams, two peewees teams (with Wilkie players) with four UMH peewee players with AA teams, one bantam team and three players in AA camps and midget A and AA teams.

Some UMH alumni players continuing their hockey careers are Nolan Acton playing with the Medicine Hat Cubs and Ryan Donald playing with the Vermilion Tigers Junior B team while attending school for an agribusiness diploma.

It was a sad day when we learned that the Unity United Church will not hold their annual fall supper this year citing not only reduced numbers in their

UCW, but an aging membership. The average age of UCW members is over 80.

Coffee row folks keep the spirits up as the wisdom shared at their table interspersed with some hearty laughter is a welcome part of any business that hosts this group. Whether they are discussing Rider woes, Blue Jays race for the pennant or talking about local events, there is always a sense of enjoyment from those taking. So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row.

Weekend storm not welcomed by farmers

More rain last Saturday night along with a thunderstorm was what the farmers just did not need. Some reported more than an inch, but there was not that much at Meota. A drive to Medstead on Sunday showed many canola crops still in swath and some fields of standing grain.

They need more sunshine and wind. The gardens are mostly in, so we don’t have to look forward to digging potatoes in the snow or freezing weather. It has been raining yellow maple leaves in Meota. Pretty, but a sign fall is here as they crunch under your feet.

In the Terry Fox report last week I had Karl’s name wrong. It should have read Caslor, and his wife Irene helped him with the organizing of the day. Sorry, Karl.

The seniors’ October meeting date is set for Oct. 13, as Oct. 14 the seniors are invited to Livelong for their annual games day.

The 10 a.m. meeting will be followed by a potluck lunch. The seniors’ tea and dessert held Sept. 28 went over well, but there was harvesting going on so the turnout was less than usual. There was still lots of delicious food to choose

Valerie and Orest Holowich, former Meota residents from Vernon, B.C., have been back visiting friends in Meota recently.

They also visited a grandson in Lashburn, who spent time in Meota this summer.

The Meota Lions annual fall supper is posted for Oct. 16, where you can see folks you haven’t seen for

some time and enjoy our good cooks’ meal.

The Anglican/United Church is holding an evening of gospel singing Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Turtleford church, with lunch to follow.

The village office is now closed all day Monday and Wednesday mornings.

The transfer site is now on winter hours – 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

The jam sessions at Medstead are held on the fourth Sunday of each month at 2 p.m.

The following was submitted by Laura Tucker Alan and I left Sept. 1 from Edmonton. We flew to Iceland where we spent two days swimming in the Blue Lagoon and taking a tour of the waterfalls and geysers. A lot of the land you see is covered by lava so looks quite desolate.

Next we flew to Great Britain where we took a ferry out to the Isle of Wight. We stayed at a cottage that had been renovated from an old milking parlour. The cottage was on land where Alan’s grandfather, George, was raised. We also went to the church where Alan’s ancestors are buried.

Then it was off to Stockholm, Sweden to visit our daughter, who is attending

An afternoon tea honouring Bertha Chester was held in the Medstead Hall on Oct. 2. About 50 folks turned out to wish her well in her new home in Edmonton, Alta. where she will be near her only son Aaron and other relatives. Bertha grew up in the Belbutte area, lived in Edmonton for many years then came home to Medstead to care for her parents. She has been here ever since. She was an active voice with the Belbutte Church Songsters and will be missed by them and all who know her. There were people from Saskatoon and North Battleford and all around, who came to say goodbye. Bertha is on the left. Next to her is her sister-in-law Eva Schalm of Spiritwood and sister Sally Orange of Meadow Lake.

school there. During the two weeks we were there we got to know the transit system, which consists of trains, trams, buses and boats. The city is built on many islands and has lots of green space. We went to museums, parks, Old Town and tried many different cafes. We dined in a 155-metre tall radio tower one night and in a dungeon the next.

For a few days we stayed at a cabin on an island about an hour out of Stockholm by boat.

Many, many people in Stockholm either walk or ride bikes. We took a train from Stockholm to Copenhagen where we spent two days visiting with a cousin of Alan’s. We toured the city by boat, went to an aquarium, a harbour and a 400-year-old town.

We left Denmark on Sept. 28 and landed in Toronto later that day. We took in a Blue Jays game that evening and went to the Hockey Hall of Fame the next morning before returning home.

Early Sept. 19, we — Stefanie and Clint Rogers, Darren and I — flew out of Saskatoon with Toronto as our destination. We took the train to Union Station and then a cab to our hotel.

For about the same price, we could have taken a cab the entire trip, but thought a train ride would be neat, and it was. We saw parts of the city, although it went by quite quickly, that we wouldn’t have seen in the cab.

Thursday was action packed. We couldn’t get

into our rooms at the Chelsea Hotel until after 3 p.m., so we started touring instantly. We walked to the Hockey Hall of Fame, to the harbour and took an island tour, then headed to St. Lawrence Market and then a quick stop at Eaton Centre before we stopped for supper. We hiked more than 17 kilometres.

Day two was much the same. We grabbed coffee at Tim’s and Starbucks.

There is a coffee shop on every corner, it seems, so we all got what we wanted without missing a beat.

With our coffees in hand, we headed towards Maple Leaf Gardens. Ryerson University now plays their games in it, so we watched a girls’ hockey team practice and walked the building.

From there we made our way to Eaton Centre, stopped for a late lunch, then headed to CN Tower, walking the PATH. I would recommend checking this out. It is an underground walkway that looks like a mall. It basically gets you to all of the “main areas” of Toronto that you would like to see.

The tower and Rogers Centre are literally steps from each other, so that made it easy for us. We toured the tower. It truly is an amazing view from way up there. The glass floor was a bit of a let down. We expected a good section of floor made of glass. There

are actually two glass sheets taking up about 50 square feet each. You have to wait to take your turn to stand on the glass. Not nearly as exciting as they make it sound. However, the $35 per adult to go up the top was worth it.

From the tower we headed over to Rogers Centre, where the Jays played a great game, winning 9-0. Our seats were left centre and we felt they were great seats. Donaldson’s homerun was just a section over from where we were sitting. According to Stefanie’s Fitbit, we walked 18.5 kilometres Friday and climbed 33 flights of stairs.

Saturday’s ball game was changed from 1 to 4 p.m., so that gave us a bit

more free time. We headed to Eaton Centre and checked out the Blue Jays store. Our wallets were a little lighter after that stop.

We also had to check out the stores at Rogers Centre, and lo and behold, we found items we liked there, too.

The Jays had to work a little harder, but ended up winning 3-0. This time our seats were along the first base foul line. Again, it was a great view of the game. We seemed to have been in the Saskatchewan section, as we met two other couples from Saskatoon sitting near us, and Layne and Gail Therres from Turtleford were just up from us.

After the game, we headed towards the Dis-

tillery District to check out the Fan Village that was set up for the World Cup of Hockey. We got to watch almost two full periods, along with a few hundred other people, on the big screen that they had set up there. There were blocks of activities to do — entertainment, floor hockey, souvenirs, food and drinks.

Once that game was over, we made our way to Wayne Gretzky’s Restaurant to have a late supper and finish up our evening.

I believe we clocked another 18 kilometres. I would totally recommend Toronto to anyone. The people are friendly, the food is amazing, there are coffee shops and bars on every street corner and so much to see and do.

CU supplies doughnuts for seniors’ supper

The Borden Friendship Club held their September potluck supper and birthdays Sept. 28 with 50 members and guests in attendance. To celebrate Senior’s Week, Affinity Credit Union supplied all the doughnuts for dessert.

Eileen Petrun stacked and decorated some to make a cake, with Jackie Meister the only celebrant blowing out the candles.

Diane Tracksell and Lynette Schmidt from Borden, who work for Affinity Credit Union, spoke on power of attorney, fraud, scams and financial abuse of seniors. The suggested ways seniors can protect themselves.

They drew for five door prizes and these went to Jean Sawchyn, Sheila Block, Anna Elliot, Julia Bezugly and Ed Neufeld.

ment was Terry Pugh, who played the guitar, harmonica and accordion for different songs that he sang.

In between songs he told jokes or stories. He said his guitar is signed by Roy Rogers Jr. and Sons of the Pioneers.

During October, students at Borden School will be dressing up. There will be pajama day, western day and Borden blue day.

The board reviewed the announcement by the provincial government to establish a panel to assess the health regions in the province to recommend a structure of fewer health authorities to

achieve administrative efficiencies as well as improvements for frontline delivery. The board will be providing a submission to the panel to articulate the need for continued comprehensive health services in rural areas.

The next regular meeting is Monday, Oct. 17, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. in the RM of Mervin office, Turtleford.

About Fire Prevention Week - Did You Know

Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871.

Commemorating a Conflagration According to popular legend, the fire broke out after a cow - belonging to Mrs. Catherine O’Leary - kicked over a lamp, setting first the barn, then the whole city on fire. Chances are you’ve heard some version of this story yourself; people have been blaming the Great Chicago Fire on the cow and Mrs. O’Leary, for more than 130 years. But recent research by Chicago historian Robert Cromie has helped to debunk this version of events.

The ‘Moo’ myth Like any good story, the ‘case of the cow’ has some truth to it. The great fire almost certainly started near the barn where Mrs. O’Leary kept her five milking cows. But there is no proof that O’Leary was in the barn when the fire broke out - or that a jumpy cow sparked the blaze. Mrs. O’Leary herself swore that she’d been in bed early that night, and that the cows were also tucked in for the evening.

But if a cow wasn’t to blame for the huge fire, what was? Over the years,

journalists and historians have offered plenty of theories. Some blamed the blaze on a couple of neighborhood boys who were near the barn sneaking cigarettes. Others believed that a neighbor of the O’Leary’s may have started the fire. Some people have speculated that a fiery meteorite may have fallen to earth on October 8, starting several fires that day - in Michigan and Wisconsin, as well as in Chicago.

The biggest blaze that week While the Great Chicago Fire was the best-known blaze to start during the fiery two-day stretch, it wasn’t the biggest. That distinction goes to the Peshtigo Fire, the most devastating forest fire in American history. The fire, which also occurred on October 8th, 1871, and roared through Northeast Wisconsin, burning down 16 towns, killing, 1,152 people, and scorching 1.2 million acres before it ended.

Historical accounts of the fire say that the blaze began when several railroad workers clearing land for tracks unintentionally started a brush fire. Before long, the fast-moving flames were whipping through the area ‘like a tornado’, some survivors said. It was the small town of Peshtigo, Wisconsin that suffered the worst damage. Within an hour, the entire town had been destroyed.

Nine decades of fire prevention

Those who survived the Chicago and Peshtigo fires never forgot what they’d been through; both blazes produced countless tales of bravery and heroism. But the fires also changed the way that firefighters and public officials thought about fire safety. On the 40th anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire, the Fire Marshals Association of North America (today known as the International Fire Marshals Assocaiton), decided that the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire should henceforth be observed not with festivities, but in a way that would “I told keep the public informed about the importance did n you I ot st of fire prevention. Half of home fire deaths result from fires reported between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when most people are asleep. Only one in five home fires were reported during these hours.

One quarter of home fire deaths were caused by fires that stared in the bedroom. Another quarter resulted from fires in the living room, family room or den. Three out of five home fire deaths happen from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

Cooking equipment is the leading cause of home fire injuries, followed by heating equipment. Smoking materials are the leading cause of home fire deaths.

During 2009 - 2013, roughly one of every 335 households had a reported home fire per year.

Most deaths in home smoking-material fires were caused by fires that started in bedrooms (40%) or living rooms, family rooms or dens (35%). Possible alcohol impairment was a factor in one in five (19%) of home smoking fire deaths. Sleep was factor in roughly one-third of the home smoking material fire deaths.

On average, there are 25 home candle fires reported per 1541 - 100th Street day. Nearly three in five candle fire start when things that can burn are too close to the candle.

Falling asleep was 306-445-5555 or a factor in 11% of the home candle fires and 30% of the 306-445-6666 associated deaths.

Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in reported home fires in half. In fires considered large enough to activate the smoke alarm, hardwired alarms operated 94% of the time, while battery powered alarms operated 80% of the time. When smoke alarms fail to operate, it is usually because batteries are missing, disconnected, or dead.

Smoke alarms save lives. Is yours up-to-date?

Fire Prevention Canada (FPC) is launching another year of smoke alarm awareness for Fire Prevention Week, October 9-15, 2016. The theme is centred on keeping your smoke alarms up to date and operational.

FPC makes several recommendations for smoke alarms: • Make sure your home’s alarms are not more than 10 years old. Check the date of manufacture on the back yearly and replace when necessary. If the manufacturer recommends replacing it with a new one more frequently, follow that guideline.

• Take advantage of Fire Prevention Week every October to change the batteries in your smoke alarms, and test them monthly.

• If installing hardwired alarms, have the work done by a qualified electrician and test them af ter they’re installed.

• Smoke alarms should be installed at the head of all stairways in the home and outside sleeping areas.

THAT ANNOYING ALARM! If your smoke alarm goes off every time you burn your toast, your biggest mistake would be to unplug it or take out the battery for some peace and quiet. House fires do the most damage at night, when people are sleeping; if you forget to reconnect the power source, you’re putting your life in danger. Instead, ask your local fire hall for advice on where to install smoke alarms so they cause less of a nuisance, or ask about better-working brands.

Test your smoke alarms monthly and replace them with new ones every ten years.

OBITUARIES TAYLOR: Jean Cecily Taylor October 14, 1930 – September 19, 2016. Jean Taylor of North Battleford Saskatchewan, (Formerly Denholm) passed away peacefully at Villa Pascal Care Home on Monday, September 19, 2016, at the age of 85 years. She is lovingly remembered by her children, Peggy Kometscher, Denholm, SK; Kevan (Pamela) Ryane, High River, AB; and Mark (Sharon) Taylor, North Battleford, SK; 7 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren; her younger brothers and sisters John Haines (ENG), Marion Yeates (ENG), Janet Farrell (ENG), Carol Green (ENG), Wendy Roused (ENG), June Crane (ENG), George Haines (ENG), James Haines (France), and Cecil Haines(ENG).

Jean is predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert (Bob), in 2005 and her parents, Cecil Haines and Lily Haines (Ashley).

Jean was born in Southampton, England, on October 14, 1930.

She met Robert while both working at the Alton Brewery and they married on June 19, 1948. They emigrated from England on the ship “N.S.Italia” on April 19, 1957 and arrived in Quebec, Canada on April 28, 1957. From there they took a train to Wawota, Saskatchewan where they spent their first year in Canada. From there, they moved to central Saskatchewan where they spent most of their years raising their family. Jean and Robert eventually retired to Denholm, Saskatchewan. They spent their retirement years fishing, gardening and caring for their grandchildren. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank Villa Pascal staff for their excellent care and loving kindness during Jean’s stay there. A Celebration and Remembrance of Jean’s life was held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, October 1st, 2016 at the Chapel Sallows & McDonald -Wilson & Zehner Funeral Home, 1271 103 St, North Battleford, with Pastor Ron Braun Officiating. Lunch and fellowship followed at the Community Baptist Church, North Battleford. Interment is set for a later date. Honorary Pallbearers for the services are Ross Nicols, Mark Taylor, Kevan Ryane, Rick Fisher, James Haines, and Cecil Haines. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Telemiracle/ Kinsmen Foundation Inc, 2217C Hanselman Court Saskatoon, SK S7L 6A8 or Villa Pascal Care Home,1301 – 113 Street, North Battleford, SK S9A 3K1. INTENT OF OFFICIAL COMMUNITY PLAN AMENDMENT The amendments are summarized below: Section 2: “Village of Maymont Land Use Policies”, subsection 2.6: “Environmental Sensitive Areas” is amended by adding two new policies regarding development in 1.500 year flood ways and flood fringes.

INTENT OF ZONING BYLAW AMENDMENT The amendments are summarized below: Section 2: “Definitions”, “Future Land Use Map” is amendment to correctly identify the attachment of the map in the Official Community Plan.

Section 3: “Administration and Interpretation”, subsection 3.7: “Development Permit Procedure” is amended to clarify the development permit application process for permitted uses and discretionary uses.

Subsection 3.8: “Development Permit: Validity” is amended by removing clauses 3.8.3, 3.8.4 and 3.8.5 to removing redundancies already addressed in subsection 3.7.

A new subsection 3.26: “General Discretionary Use Evaluation Criteria” is added to clarify discretionary use application processes.

Battlefords part of SaskPower $110 million investment Staff

Some major upgrades are coming to the Battlefords and the Northwest region as SaskPower reinvests in the electrical system.

In a news release Monday SaskPower announced the work includes upgrading portions of the power grid in areas including North Battleford, Lloydminster, Onion Lake, Paradise Hill, St. Walburg, Turtle Lake, Glaslyn, Biggar, Kerrobert, Unity and Macklin and surrounding areas.

The total investment comes to $110 million, with $100 million estimated for new power stations in the Rutland, Edam, Superb and Golden Lake areas.

Some post-construction work is going on to connect those power stations to the system, and that is expected to be completed in early 2017.

Another $10 million goes to system maintenance for North Battleford and Lloydminster. According to SaskPower, the work will include upgrading or replacing stations, inspecting and repairing wood poles and upgrading or replacing electrical devices to protect power lines.

Part of the reason for the work is to keep up with the increased demand in the region for power. According to SaskPower vicepresident of transmission services Tim Eckel, the region’s power demands have been increasing rapidly over the past decade and there were 300 new connection or reconstruction requests last year alone.

“SaskPower is facing an ongoing power challenge,” said Eckel in a statement.

“As the demand for power continues to grow, we not only need to build the grid, but we need to maintain our existing assets, including our power poles, transformers and stations. We’re investing approximately $1 billion annually throughout Saskatchewan to make sure homes, farms and businesses have the power they need, when they need it.”

SaskTel is also making the public aware that these major construction projects and ongoing system improvements will necessitate planned power outages.

RCMP meets the media on rural staffing

With the issue of staffing levels in rural areas raging on, the RCMP tried to address those concerns at a media conference at their headquarters in Regina last Thursday.

The media call comes in the wake of a number of high-profile crimes in rural areas, particularly in west-central Saskatchewan, which has seen numerous incidents including robberies and property crimes.

Spt. Mike Gibbs described successes in rural areas including the arrest of break and enter suspects in Moosomin, the bust of a major marijuana grow-op in the Medstead area and the arrests and charges laid against several people for copper wire thefts in the Colonsay area.

Gibbs acknowledged property crime complaints have increased since last year in west-central Saskatchewan and overall in the province. He said detachments are combining resources and working to monitor habitual offenders.

“We know that people are frustrated, that they feel vulnerable and violated when their property is stolen,” said Gibbs.

But he said the first priority will always be responding to calls “where people are in danger of being hurt or killed.”

Between resourcing levels and the priority of calls, and the vast distances, it can take some time to respond, he said.

“If we’re not getting to you it’s likely because we’re responding to a higher priority call. We do not have target response times.

There are too many variables involved. Instead, we aim to respond to every call and get there in a timely manner.”

Spt. Kris Vibe of the RCMP spoke about staffing levels. He said there were 924 front-line police officers in rural Saskatchewan and they are deployed based on analysis of calls for service and crime data. As of Sept. 15 there were 11.5 positions vacant for a vacancy pattern of 1.2 per cent. For the full story visit www.newsoptimist.ca.

Paralyzed by the good, the bad and the ugly Ed, my old neighbour from Saskatchewan, has a saying that no one gets any farther in life than the good, the bad and the ugly. For farmers, if the harvest is good, the price of grain may be bad, or just plain ugly.

My old neighbour has a philosophy that when things are bad or ugly no one can agree on the good to be done to change the situation. Life is about not getting paralyzed by the big three.

When folks see things as going well they tend to spend more than needed.

They get stuck in feeling active and willing to enjoy life more freely.

Before they know it they are stuck with bills and

payments that are not only bad, but at ugly interest rates.

According to Ed, life is always sliding from the good, to the bad and the ugly, but the secret is not to stay stuck in any one of them. Like in western movies, where things always go from the good, to the bad, to the ugly and start over at the good again.

In life, just go with the flow and don’t try to stand still in the past.

Ed claims people who dwell on the past get incapacitated by it no matter how it played out as the best or the worst of times.

Everyday temptations to sin are bound to come our way, but it is best to walk away from them.

If you walk away from temptations, they cannot

trip you up and ruin your day. As Christians, we need to overcome our temptations and rebuke others acting in sin rather than encouraging them in their sin. When we tempt others to sin, it may be as ordinary as an invitation to join in gossip and slander or as criminal as selling drugs or shoplifting.

The hard work of every day is paying attention to ourselves, so we do not readily sin or react in resentment and refuse to forgive when others sin against us. We live day by day in faith that God gave us forgiveness through Jesus Christ his Son. His blood purifies us from our sin. When

others sin against us, we forgive them because we have been forgiven by God. These things challenge us every day.

We live in a time of entitlement that rubs off on Christians. We do not deserve God’s forgiveness. It is a loving gift to those who know they need it. God’s forgiveness of sin is not an invitation to sin more, but to seek to sin less as the unworthy servants of Jesus Christ our Saviour and Lord.

Paralympic athlete, advocate and philanthropist “There is nothing you can’t do, if you set your mind to it.

At the age of 15, Rick Hansen’s life was irrevocably changed when a truck accident resulted in a severed spinal cord that left him paralyzed from the waist down. This event became the impetus that led him to become a lifelong crusader for the physically disabled.

Rick’s campaign started on a personal scale with a Canadian Paralympian Rick commitment to achieving his innate athletic potential.

His love of sport lead him to pursue a Bachelor of Physical Education at UBC, making him the first person with a physical disability to ever earn this degree from the esteemed university. But it was his talent, ability and hard work that allowed him to achieve worldwide recognition as an athlete. With a focus on marathoning, he won numerous competitions and most notably earned three gold, two silver and one bronze medal at the Paralympic games of 1980 and 1984. He also competed for Canada at the 1984 Olympics in wheelchair track as an exhibition sport. He was the first person ever to break the two-hour mark in a wheelchair marathon.

Despite all his athletic achievements, it was his Man In Motion World Tour that really put him on the map—figuratively and literally. Inspired by the courage of his friend Terry Fox, Rick decided to circle the globe in his wheelchair. The purpose was to prove the potential of people with disabilities while raising funds and awareness. The tour allowed Hansen to cover 40,000 kilometres over 34 countries across four continents in 26 months. He raised $26 million for spinal cord research and quality of life initiatives.

After the tour Rick was ready to begin the next phase in his mission to “create a world without barriers.” He established and became the CEO of the Rick Hansen Foundation, a not for profit organization that’s committed to empowering people with disabilities achieve their potential while advocating for a more inclusive world. To date, the foundation has raised over $220 million for spinal cord injury research and other programs. Educating, motivating and promoting change are all in a days work for this inspiring Canadian.

Actress Pamela Anderson, NHL player and coach Randy Carlyle, singer Larissa Loyva, and CEO Peter Nygard are among the more renowned Finnish-Canadians around today. Though not the largest Canadian subculture—the 2011 census reports 136,213 Canadians claim Finnish ancestry—this community is substantial enough to produce a number of newspapers, a radio station, a yearly festival, and a range of Finnish cultural organizations.

The first Finns came to Canada in the late 1800s but a more substantial immigration occurred in the early to mid 21st century. There was both reason to leave—notably the Finnish Civil War and resulting economic depression—and incentive to come—the Canadian Pacific Railway was actively recruiting labourers. In addition, much of the Canadian landscape and climate seemed quite hospitable to emigrating Finns due to its semblance with their homeland. Logging, farming and mining were common work for early immigrants while those who arrived later were more inclined to make their livelihoods in urban centres.

Today, the largest Finnish communities are in Ontario and British Columbia, with sizable populations in Thunder Bay, Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, Kirkland Lake, Timmins and Toronto. Finnish-Canadians have enriched the national mosaic of our nation with their political, athletic, artistic and entrepreneurial contributions.
