Welcome to the Northern Lakes! Up the #24 North... Leoville - Small town, Big Heart! The village on the forest fringe at the point where Highway 24 swings west to Chitek Lake is a place with friendly people, all the services you might require and a strong volunteer spirit! Major events during the year in Leoville are the Ladies Diamond Dinner, Mother’s Day Brunch, Father’s Day ATV Rally and Slo-pitch Tournament, Trailriders Rodeo, Snowdrifters Snowmobile Rally. In the sports field, Leoville has a very active youth badminton program with hundreds of medals won over the years. There is minor, senior and recreational hockey, sandlot ball, figure skating and curling. There is also an active 4-H program and a very active Girl Guides of Canada program. Chitek Lake - The resort village of Chitek Lake is one of the most popular camping destinations in our Region. With a growing population of permanent residents, the village bursts with activity during the summer months - family reunions, swimming lessons, quadding, great fishing - all great reasons to plan your holidays around Chitek Lake! With the Van Dam Good Ice Fishing Derby and the Bush Buddies Snowmobile Rally on plenty of well-marked trails, your family will want to make plans for winter too. Tour #378 South... Meeting Lake Regional Park - Located just off Highway #378 between Spiritwood and Rabbit Lake, this is your camping destination with the family fun in mind! Open from May long weekend until September long weekend. Meeting Lake Regional Park boasts modern conveniences such as a concession, dining room, gas, laundromat, showers and a camp kitchen. Fish for northern pike, pickerel and perch, take part in musical jam sessions and karaoke nights, enter the parade, or just enjoy the beach - Meeting Lake is everything you want for the entire summer or just a sunny day! Rabbit Lake - Famous for being the district that hosts the Carlton Trail Jamboree, Rabbit Lake is the epitome

Canwood - The ideal location and variety of services offered makes Canwood a good choice for people looking to get back to small town life. Offering a variety of essential services, from groceries to health care, Canwood is close enough to major centers to make travel convenient for day trips as well as weekend visits! There is never a lack of activity - from activities with the Seniors to events at the Community School or a round of golf after work, Canwood is a great destination in itself or a stop on your trip to the lakes. Debden & Morin Lake - Debden is a bilingual community that was founded in 1912, pioneered by brave souls mostly from Quebec. By 1922 the small hamlet of Debden became incorporated as a village. Today the village has 348 residents and is a full service community for everything you need, all within a few minutes walking distance. Whether you are an avid nature lover or sportsman we are located in the heart of some of the best nature has to offer. With 100 lakes within 50 miles, there is always a lot to explore. Being in the heart of such amazing country with large expanses of land, wilderness and bodies of water, this region can proudly say that we have some of the best fishing and hunting anywhere in Canada. Big River - The hub of the lake region in our Northern reaches, Big River is a town with everything! You will not find better fishing and boating opportunities - you can even fish off the dock right inside the town limits. Sink your teeth into a syrupy wedge of fresh apple pie made from locally grown apples, pick saskatoons till your hands are purple or purchase farm-fresh veggies for supper. The 12-40 and Beyond tour offers these delights and more.
Curious about the past and how things were done in by-gone days? Let the sound of the hammer shaping hot metal at a working forge take you back in time. Browse through an antiques shop, take in a weaving demonstration or slip your feet into a pair of soft leather moccasins made just for you. You can also run your fingers over the fine threads of fabric art created by a textile artist, choose a scroll saw design to grace your window, pick up some photo note cards, or find just the right painting for a special spot in your home. Want to get involved? A number of venues offer demonstrations so you can be part of the action. There’s
even an “ugly stick” competition where you can set your inner-musician free as you make your own music. The highlights are the work of more than a dozen artists, producers and crafters. All stops on the tour are within a half-hour drive of Blaine Lake. Participating sites are open from 9 a.m. till 8 p.m. near the end of July. Check the website for dates and mark your calendar. You won’t want to miss it! Then follow the signs with the old red grain elevator for an unforgettable adventure in rural life.

Thickwood Hills Studio Trail Take a drive to Shell Lake during the second weekend in August and follow the Thickwood Hills Studio Trail over rolling hills and through the aspen forests and get to know the talented artists of the parkland. With more than ten studios to visit, you can book a nearby cabin or cottage or bring your RV and spend the full two days of the tour driving the scenic countryside to participating studios. If you don’t have that much time, select the studios you’d most like to see. Either way, this tour offers great variety, friendly artistic folks and charming country drives. Whatever you decide, be sure to allow enough time to take in the scenic lakes and sandy beaches that dot the Thickwood Hills area. Participating artists will have artworks available for purchase and some artists welcome you to visit them while they work. Washroom facilities and picnic tables are located at all studios.
Whether you’re looking for distinctive garden décor, a unique gift or an artist to commission for a special piece of artwork, you’ll find it along the Thickwood Hills Studio Trail. Crooked Bush

http://nledcpresents.blogspot.ca/ We (Summer Students and myself) took a field trip to the Crooked Bush near Mayfair, SK. This naturally occurring phenomenon was easily located by following a map that is distributed from the Tourist Information Booth in Spiritwood. A decent (given the wet conditions this season) gravel road led us in straight lines off Highway #378, through the small community of Mayfair (don’t expect to shop or dine in Mayfair) and down a couple of right turns to the site of the Crooked Trees. The photos don’t do this gem of nature justice, but I added them anyway! Also, you can read Kiera’s account of the trip - Jordan took plenty more pictures - and if we had known about the picnic table and outdoor facilities in this tranquil setting, we would have packed a lunch. experience. I saw an amazing part of nature. The ways the trees intertwine and twist is mystical. Walking on the path through the bushes was an eerie but beautiful sight at the same time. The trees are a complete mystery of nature. Some say flying saucers flew over the area and changed the chemistry of the earth beneath the roots. All work done at the Crooked Trees is voluntary and the Tourism Committee of Hafford is working hard to preserve it. The Crooked Trees have been nominated for one of the Seven Wonders of Canada out of a 25,000 nominated it placed the top 52. I hope to go back to the Crooked Trees again and spend a longer period of time exploring all of the wonders the trees have to offer. Kiera Andres, Summer Student at Tourist Info Booth!

Welcome to Spiritwood nights fill up the social calendar. As well, the mezzanine is available for private groups, conferences, weddings and other functions. Hockey is a staple in the community for all ages and abilities and with the new HJR Asphalt arena opened in 2011 athletes enjoy a state-of-the-art facility. Summer activities are based around Spiritwood’s 12-site camp ground located next to our softball fields with five diamonds, two that are shaled. The museum full of pioneer memorabilia, massive agricultural display and vintage church rounds out the attractions at the park.

January - Wildlife Federation Banquet Grey Goose Funspiel Open spaces, northern lights rippling across the star filled skies. Fresh air and wheat fields and some of the most breathtaking sunsets against the prairie horizon. Spiritwood is an agricultural centre situated in the north central Parkland District, an area of relatively good soils. Grain growing is the chief industry followed closely by raising livestock. Spiritwood offers its residents fully modern accommodation, education, medical, dental, retail and government services. Its close proximity to an abundance of lakes and parks with camping, boating, fishing, golfing, hunting, snowmobiling and hiking enhances the quality of life. Spiritwood’s economy is healthy and vibrant due to the diversity of mixed farming, retail trade, government services and tourism. Spiritwood’s population is approximately 1000. As the largest community within 80 km in any direction, Spiritwood is regarded as one of the hubs of the Northern Lakes region. The total population of our trading area is between 6000 and 7000; this takes in a 30-35 mile radius. With over 200 businesses, community service groups and government agencies, residents have many choices in all aspects of family requirements from education to daily needs, agriculture supplies to beauty care. The region’s economy is aided in areas such as recruitment and retention through the Northern Lakes Economic Development Corporation. Their motto “partnering for sustainable economic growth” is the basis on which new business development is identified and planned. The community boasts a 1.6 million dollar facility opened in 2005 for curling and bowling. It has a finished mezzanine (with lift and wheelchair access) to host larger functions. Cameron & Bourdages Memorial Park Purpose of the Society The purpose of forming the Cameron & Bourdages Memorial Society is to design and construct a public memorial in Spiritwood, Saskatchewan to honour our fallen RCMP members, Constable Robin Cameron and Constable Marc Bourdages, and all peace officers who have served and continue to serve with courage and dedication.
Purpose of the Memorial: The purpose of the Memorial is to offer a positive and peaceful space to pay respect to Constable Robin Cameron and Constable Marc Bourdages and peace keepers across Canada and around the world.
History: In 2006 Constable Robin Cameron and Constable Marc Bourdages were attending a call while on duty in Spiritwood when they were shot and later succumbed to their injuries in hospital. The community of Spiritwood chose to recognize the

sacrifice of these two Constables by naming the local ice arena the “Bourdages Cameron Arena.” Since then, the community built a new arena/multiplex centre, which has been renamed after a generous donation from a large corporate sponsor, leaving the old arena slated for demolition. It became clear that Spiritwood needed a public memorial to commemorate and recognize its own fallen Constables. The Cameron & Bourdages Memorial Society was created out of this. The Cameron & Bourdages Memorial Society includes a variety of members from Spiritwood and area, all united behind a common goal. Furthermore the town of Spiritwood has assisted the Society by donating a parcel of land for the park to be built on, and have agreed to maintain it after the Memorial Park is built. Robin and Marc’s families have blessed the idea of the Memorial Park and have been involved in the planning to honour their loved ones. The Cameron & Bourdages Memorial Society’s vision is to construct a Memorial Park that is a place of peace, remembrance, pride and gathering for the community of Spiritwood and surrounding areas. We continue to work towards completion of this park and are proud and excited about what we have accomplished so far. This park has been a light that has come out of a dark and tragic event from our community’s past.
Main Street Gallery
Along Spiritwood’s Main Street are sights you wouldn’t expect to see in a town of 1,000. In the library’s window are lakeside scenes, while in the window of The Nines hair salon, stands a rooster in bold colour. A number of businesses along Spiritwood’s Main Street are featuring the work of local artists and artists from the surrounding area in its windows. The idea was Heather Beauchesne’s, a local physiotherapist and artist. In 2016, artist Mavis Bellisle approached Beauchesne to establish the presence of art in town. Beauchesne, along with Northern Lakes Economic Development Corporation’s Managing Director Bevra Fee, asked local businesses if they’d allow for art to be showcased in display windows they weren’t using. The first building to have art in its windows was the RM of Spiritwood building. Businesses gradually allowed art to be displayed in their windows, although Beauchesne said it was sometimes a hard sell at the beginning. “A lot of people wanted to wait and see before they’d say yes to something.” Now, Fee said, there is art in “pretty much all the windows in town that are available.” Beauschesne said she initially expected only three or four artists to participate, but interest grew. The work of 12 artists is currently featured. Fee was also surprised by the local interest. “I didn’t know a little northern prairie town was interested in the arts,” Fee said. “It’s not only locals, it’s tourism. Lots of people come through the area. It’s really sparked an interest I didn’t know we had.” Artists that came along for a tour were Mavis Bellisle, Taylor Olson, Monica Kitching, Rigmor Clarke from Shell Lake, Nathan Pinsent from Leoville (who said he’s been marketing himself for 26 years), and Pat Jacobson. Most featured artists are selftaught, with some art classes here and there. Fee and Beauchesne said the plan is to try to secure funding for a gallery space and an artist-in-residence. The gallery space would be the RM building in town. In order to prevent too much art in the building at once, Fee said an option is to showcase the work of two artists at once, while the other work would stay in its respective windows. “We’ve had so much interest with people coming into the offices and businesses where the artwork is, looking for the gallery,” Fee said. New to Spiritwood’s Main Street is a contemporary art gallery, located in the basement of the RM Building. The hours are typically Monday – Friday, 8 am – 4 pm, or by appointment at 883-2426. Spiritwood Main Street Gallery held its grand opening in November, with Rick Pilling the first artist to be featured. Pat Jacobson said she likes the art along Main Street because not needing to go into a building allows for more people to see the art, and walking tours offer an opportunity to walk around and chat. Jacobson has displayed her work in the Chapel and Allen Sapp galleries in North Battleford. She said people are more likely to judge art that’s in a gallery, rather than just admire it. “Sometimes as an artist it doesn’t matter to me if they like it or not,” Jacobson said. Along Main Street, “if you like it, you like it. If you don’t, you don’t.”
Monica Kitching said she enjoys the opportunity to display her work to the public. “I’m 60 and starting over again on a new journey in life.” She said her family inspired her to start painting again. “The door’s open for me, and I’m loving it.” Beauchesne wrote in an email that the program wasn’t driven by an artist collective, but rather by individuals and town representatives. Artists in the Spiritwood and surrounding area are encouraged to contact Beauchesne or Fee. Featuring art in Main Street windows, Beauchesne added, is something any town can start doing. Fee said she’s embracing Spiritwood’s new artistic side. “We used to be known for the rodeo, now we’re going to be known for the arts,” Fee said. She said she often hears of rural towns disappearing and changing for the worse, but art along Main Street is an example of the community thriving. “We’re holding our own and maybe even winning the battle a bit.”

Spiritwood Museum Spiritwood Museum Committee is a registered non-profit group that boasts a museum depicting rural farm house, agricultural building and a church, all with adjoining displays representing many aspects of rural Saskatchewan history. With large emphasis on agriculture as well as vintage machinery and vehicles. Each building tells its own story of life in northern Saskatchewan. The main museum, a rural farm house represents the lives of northern Saskatchewan’s early settlers. The two upper levels of the house resembles a family home containing many original artifacts donated by Spiritwood and the surrounding district’s communities. Also in this building; on the first floor, we have many interesting displays, ranging from sports to military and wedding dresses to first nations artifacts. Just down the road, in the Agriculture building you’ll find many hand tools and farming equipment. In this building you’ll notice a tools of the trade theme. Experience the past knowing all these items had once been used by farmers and people of

other professions from this region. While visiting this building, check out the veterinarian display, old shop display, shoe making and watch display as well as our fire truck! Also on our grounds is one of the six original Bissell Memorial Church, built in 1936. The church was built by Mr. Bissell after inventing and patenting a plough. The united church was built in Mildred SK and moved to Spiritwood SK in the year of 1965. The interior remains the same since it had been used in Spiritwood. This church is unique because it was one of six built in Canada, including the last minutes from the Norbury Hungarian church donation items, such as the bell and an alter cloth. Our community museum has a huge range of items to see. Our impressive collection has something for the entire family and people of all ages to enjoy. Located near the RV park and less than a minute from town. Come take a tour at the Spiritwood & District Museum to experience the home, working and religious life of people long ago.

This chronically popular country music event in Spiritwood showcases local talent annually at their well-planned event in April. “The question asked after every version of the Spiritwood Grand Ole Opry is just how many people attended over the course of the two evenings, and again, the most reliable number is a clear guess. About 900. Suffice to say, the place was jammed to the rafters.” - Spiritwood Herald, April 2016. The volunteer committee has developed the format and the selection process over the years, but be assured that the variety of performers provides a satisfying balance of entertainers – veteran
and newcomer, young and old, male and female. Twelve performers each night are backed by a house band and are selected via applications that are submitted by November of the previous year. Performers typically have some tie to Spiritwood – whether it is currently their hometown or they live elsewhere but are from the area or work in the area. The MC keeps the audience engaged during act changes and skillfully guides the eager fans through the bios and introductions of firsttimers and welcomes back the long-time favourites. Spiritwood’s Grand Ole Opry is an early sellout every year.

The RM of Spiritwood No. 496 is an agricultural municipality situated in the north central parkland district of Saskatchewan. Grain growing is the chief industry followed closely by livestock operations. Big game hunting, great fishing and the many resorts and regional parks make this area a popular destination. The Rural Municipality of Spiritwood No. 496 first formed on December 9, 1929 and expanded to amalgamate Shell Lake No. 495 on December 31, 1953. In almost all cases an approved development permit is required before commencing any development or use of land in the RM of Spiritwood. Building Permit A building permit is separate from a development permit. A building permit refers to building construction and compliance with the National Building Code and is governed by the RM Building Bylaw.

Snowmobiling in the Northern Lakes
More than 300 km of ATV and snowmobile trails are found in the Big River area, providing trail users with scenic forest rides, along abandoned logging roads that offer various challenges depending on the time of year and local weather conditions. The ATV trails can become quite muddy at times as riders cross shallow streams, creeks and rivers. The majority of the ATV and snowmobile trails are well-groomed throughout the year and lead to some excellent fishing lakes that are only accessible from the trails. Regardless of the trail or time of year, though, riders are asked to exercise caution as potentially hazardous conditions may occur. Due to the extensive trail network, riders are encouraged to ride with a friend and use GPS or a trained guide to lead them through the area.

Northern Lights Bluegrass and Old Tyme Music Camp
Where can you go to learn or improve your music skills? Northern Lights Bluegrass and Old Tyme Music Camp takes place in the forest near Big River at the site known as Ness Creek. For nine years now, during the 2nd week of August, amateur musicians gather there to learn from professional musicians in the genres of Bluegrass and Old Tyme music. A three day music festival happens at the end of the week for the public. The instructors for the music camp are hired from these headlining bands. In the past, instructors have come from mountains of the Yukon, the swamps of Louisiana, the hills of San Francisco and from the kitchen parties of the Maritimes. Bluegrass music is a form of acoustic string band music that features vocal harmonies and virtuosic displays of picking on individual instruments. It all started with Bill Munroe and the Bluegrass Boys but has been made popular again by the movie Oh Brother Where Art Thou and the pop sounds of Mumford and Sons, etc. Old Tyme music is also string music but encompasses a much broader genre. It can include piano, harmonica, and more. We define it as anything from old mountain music from Appalachia, to East Coast fiddle tunes, Metis tunes, and anything in between. Grandparents, moms, dads and kids of all ages are combining a week of camping and socializing with a week of learning to play music, sing and dance. They will be privy to some of the most jaw dropping professional performances; private concerts and impromptu music creation. There are week long classes in guitar, mandolin, banjo (bluegrass and claw hammer), fiddle, dobro, bass, vocal harmony, and old time piano. No matter what level of expertise you are at, there is a class for everyone’s ability. For the youngsters that are not ready to take up an instrument yet, there is a kid’s class that introduces them to music. They build their own instruments and have an absolute blast learning! The instructors also collaborate and host miniworkshops where they may be showcasing regional fiddle styles, perhaps a history lesson, song writing techniques, band dynamics, or how to operate sound equipment. Every day is a surprise at music camp.

The evenings feature old time dances, band showcases, class performances, and of course organized and spontaneous jam sessions. Another fun event is the band scrambles where new “bands” are randomly created and given minutes to learn and perform a song together. The week finishes with a Songwriters Concert where students have the opportunity to write and perform their own songs. One of the greatest parts of the week is the jamming. Every day there are opportunities for the students to get together to play songs as a group around a campfire. Musicians love to learn, improve and practice but nothing seems to satisfy them more than when they get to jam together. Imagine the sadness of the greatest skilled hockey player who only ever practices but never gets to play a game with others. Here, artists learns an instrument well and how it fits into these styles of music. They also learn jam etiquette, the rules of how not to be annoying or disruptive and the proper way to encourage and support fellow musicians while jamming. The gift of music is transferred from one generation to the next at the Northern Lights Bluegrass and Old Tyme Music Camp. It is not uncommon to see complete strangers crossing generations to offer help to each other. Last year, a young boy expressed interest in the dobro being played by an older gentleman.

On June 21, 22 & 23, 2018, Big River hosts its 7th Annual “Country at the Creek” music festival at the Ness Creek Site. We will have an amazing line up planned with popular artists as well as local artists from our town. In the past we've had such artists as The Washboard Union, Chris Buck Band, Dan Davidson, Tommy John Ehman, Trick Ryder, Heidi Munro with the RealGroovyBand, Joanne Janzen, Sydney Mae, Jackie Guy, The Willie Sons, Scotty Hills, Randy & Rai Smith, Rocky Lakner & Don Milliken, Rivertown and Layton Ferster.
Main Stage music begins Friday at 4:00 pm till 10:30 pm and Saturday 12:00 noon till 10:30 pm. Beer Gardens entertainment begins Thursday at 7:30 pm. On Friday and Saturday, Beer Garden entertainment begins at 11:00 pm till 1:30 am. We have a limited amount of Early Bird tickets at $105. Once those are sold, the remaining tickets will be sold at general admission price of $140. Camping passes are $25 and are required if staying on site.

Birdwatching Wonderful Warblers
Step into a mature spruce forest. Listen and quietly wait. Your patience may be richly rewarded by a view of the beautiful Blackburnian Warbler in its vibrant orange-andblack breeding plumage. Magnolia warblers, cape may warblers, and many other of these miniature songsters may also be present. These delightful little insect-eating neotropical songbirds overwinter in Central and South America. Each spring many species of warblers return to nest in the Northern Lakes region and spotting a particular species is a highlight for many birders.
Birding at Sunset
When the sun sinks below the western horizon and the daytime songbirds become quiet, listen from beside a crackling campfire as the forest and woodland animals begin to stir. Pay attention to the new sounds that ring out at the end of the day. A sudden squawk may alert you to a black crowned night heron hunting in the shallows. Among the evening sounds you might also hear the whistlingfeathers “call” of the common snipe as it performs its aerial manoeuvres, the squeaky whinny of the sora, the booming of a ruffed grouse, or the hooting of an owl.
Northern Lakes Nightlife
For a unique late-night experience give owling a try. You don’t have to wait till midnight, as many owls become active about dusk. Pack a strong flashlight with extra batteries and take along some insect repellent. Owl spotting takes
patience, but it can be a highly rewarding and memorable experience. Follow your ears, as you’re likely to hear owls before you see them. If you’re still and quiet, off in the distance you might just catch the sound of the deep hoots of a greathorned owl, the maniacal laughing call of the barred owl, or the soft, low hoo-hoos of the much sought-after great gray. These owls, along with the northern hawk owl, northern saw whet, northern boreal, and possibly some short-eared owls are all year-round residents in the Northern Lakes region. You can also check local bird spotting reports to know where to go.
Permanent Residents
Strap on a pair of snow shoes or skis for a wonderful winter bird watching adventure in the Northern Lakes region. Although most birds leave the area during fall migrations, sighting one of our cold-hardy residents can make a winter outing extraordinary. A flash of yellow over snow-laden spruce trees may draw your attention to a flock of evening grosbeaks. A spark of red along a branch may yield a sighting of white-winged crossbills gleaning seeds from conifer cones. Winter in the Northern Lakes region is far from drab and boring! Other winter residents include the seldom seen threetoed and black-backed woodpeckers which forage for grubs in mature stands of conifers. Red crossbills, pine grosbeaks, as well as ruffed, sharp-tailed and spruce grouse are also present here all winter.

History and Origins of Honeywood Lilies and Nursery – Founded 1934 by A. J. (Bert) Porter
Dr Porter A. J. (Bert) Porter is recognized in Saskatchewan as one of the pioneer plant breeders. His home and nursery are an important reminder to our generation and future generations that the fruit we enjoy in our yards and gardens did not just happen, but are the result of years of testing and research by people like Dr. Porter. Honeywood, as his home and nursery, is the foundation of the work carried out by Dr. A. J. Porter throughout his life. It is a living legacy to future generations showing what someone, who has no formal education in a given field, can accomplish. With a lot of drive and determination to produce a superior plant, be it ornamental, such as the lily, or practical, such as the many varieties of fruit, Dr. Porter was able to reach beyond himself and set an ideal example. Although he received recognition for his work, his nursery was almost lost to future generations as many of the great nurseries and orchards in Saskatchewan have been. Honeywood (Dr. A. J. Porter) Heritage Nursery Inc was designated a Municipal Heritage property in 2001, a Provincial Heritage property in 2007.
Today
Honeywood is home to fields of lilies, fruit trees, peonies, daylilies, roses and a collection of specialty trees & shrubs to be found throughout the nursery. There is a unique gift shop located in the log home and a picnic area with tables outside on the lawn. Stroll through the gardens located in the main yard or take a longer walk to get a close up view of the fields, orchards and the many outstanding trees collected by Dr. Porter. The nursery is open to visitors throughout the season. The effort to preserve the nursery has been recognized in Saskatchewan not only by its heritage designation but also by Tourism Saskatchewan and the Architectural Heritage Society of Saskatchewan. We are also recognized beyond the boundaries of Saskatchewan when we received the 2005 Prairie Garden Award for Excellence based in Winnipeg.
