New ODR complex grand opening A New Outdoor Recreation (ODR) Complex is opening at Camp Heritage/Dickhaeuter Lake with a ribbon cutting ceremony around noon. The facility will offer a great variety of recreational programs, including Leisure Travel Services. Leisure Travel Services in Tower Barracks, Bldg. 539 has closed and will relocate in the new complex upon opening. Army Education Centers – contract ends The current support services contract for Army Education Centers in Europe will end this Friday, Sept. 20. Unfortunately, the contract change-over will impact the delivery of education center support services in the following USAG Bavaria communities: Rose Barracks, Tower Barracks, Hohenfels, and Garmisch.

PLEASE NOTE: evening college classes and office hours for local college representatives are NOT affected by this issue.

Effective Monday, Sept. 23, the USAG Bavaria Army Education Centers will have reduced operational hours for general services until further notice. For Soldiers who are out processing or have other urgent matters, they can contact their local education center to schedule an appointment with the Education Services Officer or Specialist (Rose Barracks; 476-2753, Hohenfels, 466-2668). Appointments for DANTES, Army Personnel Tests, and other testing will potentially not be available until after Oct. 7. As an alternative for proctored college testing, check with the National Test Center (NTC) at the Rose Barracks Education Center; 476-2462, civilian 09662-83-2462. These services, as well as general education counseling, GoArmyEd portal account/TA issues resolution, FAST classes, and computer lab services will resume as soon as possible. Updates to the community will be announced as services are restored. We thank you for your patience and understanding.

CYSS, SKIIES to cease programs, new background check procedures As part of an Army-wide audit of childcare procedures, installations are reinitiating background checks for volunteers and employees who work with minors in various programs and services. This means many Child, Youth & School Services (CYSS) Schools of Knowledge, Inspiration, Exploration & Skills (SKIES) instructional programs must cease until background checks are completed. We understand the inconvenience that these disruptions are causing; however, any risk, no matter how small, is not worth taking with the health, welfare and safety of our children. The education of our children is vital, but we must also ensure their safety. We ask for everyone's patience during this time.

Bavaria Military Community programs immediately impacted are: Grafenwoehr: TangSooDo, Culinary Arts, Karate Hohenfels: Pint-sized Prancers, Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Private Dance Lessons, Haidong-Gumdo, Taekwondo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Tiny Tumblers, Gymnastics Child, Youth & School Services will refund fees for classes not delivered during this pause.

We understand the inconvenience that these disruptions are causing; however, any risk, no matter how small, is not worth taking with the health, welfare and safety of our children.

Soldier for Life, R2C As part of the Ready and Resilient Campaign (R2C), the Army Chief of Staff developed a new program called "Soldier For Life" to review and suggest ways how our nation can assist transitioning Soldiers through the three pillars of education, employment and healthcare.

A program team will visiting here this month to speak with Bavaria Military Community Soldiers on this initiative.

Mission partner Soldiers assigned to Tower Barracks will participate in a one-hour presentation Sept. 26, 10 a.m., at Tower Barracks Movie Theater.

Mission partner Soldiers assigned to Rose Barracks will participate in a one-hour presentation Sept. 26, 10 a.m., at the Rose Barracks Jurkewicz Theater. All Soldiers and Leaders are invited to attend.

Winter Driving Course For all those new arrival in Germany or for anyone who is uncomfortable driving in winter conditions and ice, the garrison is offering Winter Driving Courses. The course is design to educate drivers on the dangers of driving in snow/ice and to give tips on handling sliding or out of control vehicles. If your unit/organization is interested in this training, please contact William Whitman via email. Classes will alternate between the Vilseck Army Airfield and the Grafenwoehr Motor Pool #5.

National Suicide Prevention & Awareness Month video September is Suicide Prevention Month. If you see someone close to you or someone in your unit struggling, be compassionate, reach out, and help. If you feel lost, remember that getting help from a friend or from behavioral health is a sign of strength. Call DSN 118, CIV 09641-83-118 for the suicide hotline.

The DoD wants to remind service members that seeking help is a sign of strength. The military crisis line is available 24/7 and is confidential. Watch the short video here.

It’s CFC-O time again…

Now-15 Nov: The 2013 Combined Federal Campaign-Overseas Europe (CFC-O) is starting again. CFC allows members of the community to donate to organizations and give to charitable organizations or give back to the community.

TARP, SETA, OPSEC and Anti-terrorism Level 1 training The United States Army Garrison Grafenwoehr (Antiterrorism and Security Divisions) along with the 66th Military Intelligence Group and JMTC Intelligence and Security, will be conducting the quarterly Community Security Awareness Training consisting of the Threat Awareness and Reporting Program (TARP), Security Education Training Awareness (SETA), Operation Security (OPSEC), and Anti-terrorism Level 1 Refresher Training.

4th Quarter Community Security Awareness Training Schedule: 18 Sept: Tower Barracks, Tower Theater, Bldg. 620. 10:30-11:30 a.m. (LN employees), 1:30-4 p.m. (US personnel) 19 Sept: Rose Barracks, Post Theater, Bldg. 354. 9-11:30 a.m. (US personnel), 1:30-2:30 p.m. (LN employees) This training is a mandatory annual requirement for all DoD personnel including Military, AF/NAF (both US and LN); U.S. Contractor employees are welcome.

Positive discipline seminar 26 Sept: Come join the Special Needs Advisory Council (SNAC) for a seminar and interactive event that focuses on ways to positively shape your child’s behavior. There will be food, a "make and take" craft for parents (with a positive behavior theme), and crafts and games for children. There will also be an information table available with materials covering positive behavior shaping strategies. Community Huddle 26 Sept: The Community Huddle is a bi-monthly, Town Hall style meeting, hosted by Garrison Commander COL James

Saenz, for all community members to ask questions to civilian and military leadership and to find out the latest information on programs, events, construction, and other important issues happening in the community. The next Community Huddle will be in the Tower View Inn on Thursday, 26 Sept, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

Bulk Trash Pickup – County of Neustadt 23 Sept: City Grafenwoehr 28 Oct: Mantel and Steinfels 4 Nov: Netzaberg & City Eschenbach (North of B 470 & South of B 470) Trash must be curbside, in front of your home. Bulk Trash has to be out on curbside NLT 6 a.m. Pick-up is provided by contractors of the County Neustadt.

What will be picked up? Everything, that is too big or too heavy to go into the normal refuse container, such as: Furniture, mattresses, carpets, washing machines, dryers, radios, TVs, ovens, stoves, bicycles, strollers, and other items which cannot be dismantled, torn or broken down to a size that would fit in the regular refuse container. Each single item should be no larger than 80x40x32 inches and should not be heavier than 110 lb. Bulk trash consisting of metal (i.e. bicycles, washers, dryers, stoves, etc.) and electronic equipment (such as large appliances, small appliances, cooling devices, information & telecommunications including entertainment equipment) should be put out separately next to the normal bulk trash.

What will not be picked up?

- Normal refuse, recyclable material, Yard waste like cut grass, branches, etc...

- Hazardous waste - Tires, car parts, batteries, wrecked cars, motorcycles - Doors and windows (with or without glass), laminated floor, rouleaus - Construction debris - Night storage heaters Pick ups will be performed in three steps: 1. Combustible material: like upholstered furniture, mattresses, rugs, etc...

2. Electronic equipment: i.e. TV, PC, printer, scanner, radio, VCR, DVD player, monitor, vacuum cleaner, refrigerators and freezers (no permission sticker required anymore), etc… together with Household Metal items: i.e. bicycles, ironing boards, washer, dryer, dishwasher, stoves (oil stoves and oil barrels must be totally emptied) etc…

3. Salvageable wooden furniture: (i.e. bed frame, wardrobe, chair, table, etc….)

Smaller electronic appliances (i.e. hairdryer, toothbrush, telephones, drilling machine etc.) should be brought to the drop off point “Company Bergler” in Weiherhammer, Etzenrichter Str. 2, Mon.-Fri. from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. hour, CIV 09605-92090.

Any material not picked up must be removed by residents. For more, call your SORT Office at DSN 475-6664.

Bulk Trash Pickup – County Tirschenreuth For Erbendorf, Kastl, Kemnath, Kulmain & Thumsenreuth Pickup is performed by the County Tirschenreuth upon written request by the resident (“Sperrmuellabfuhr auf Abruf”). For a blank form contact your SORT Office at DSN 475-6664.

Bulk Trash Pickup – County Bayreuth For Speichersdorf Pickup is performed by the County Bayreuth upon individual written request by the resident per special application card (“Sperrmuellabfuhr auf Abruf”). To obtain a blank form of this special application card contact your SORT Office at DSN 475-6664.

September is National Cholesterol Education Month High cholesterol puts you at risk of heart disease and heart attacks. The best way to tackle high cholesterol is prevention.

Nutritionally, there are several ways to improve your cardiovascular health. Consider adopting some of these guidelines for lowering your blood cholesterol (including “the bad” LDL cholesterol) levels.  Consume foods that are naturally high in fiber, especially soluble fiber. Soluble fiber is found in legumes, fruits and root vegetables, as well as oats, barley and flax. The goal is for 10-25 grams of soluble fiber per day.  Limit the amount of saturated fat you consume from dairy products, red meat and tropical oils.  Avoid foods with added trans-fat. This fat comes from partially hydrogenated vegetables oils often found in fried and processed foods like chips, crackers, baked goods and desserts.  Limit you intake of sugar and fructose. This should lower triglycerides, aid in weight loss and will help lower LDL.  Limit your daily cholesterol intake to no more than 200mg.



If you are overweight, lose weight. This will help lower your total cholesterol and raise your HDL. The best way to lose weight and keep it off is to exercise (aerobic – cardiovascular type) and eat a diet that is high in fiber and low in calorie density.

These guidelines are particularly important if you: Have family history of heart disease; are physically inactive (less than 150 minutes of cardio/week); have high cholesterol, high blood pressure or low HDL levels; have diabetes; smoke; are overweight; and over 45 y/o for men and 55 y/o for women.

Limited postal services 2 & 3 Oct: Oct. 2 at Rose Barracks (Vilseck) and Oct. 3 Tower Barracks (Grafenwoehr) Postal Service Centers (PSCs) will offer limited services due to equipment upgrade. Limited services will consist of accepting MPS items for mailing (APO to APO without postage or Insurance), Parcel Pick Up and Official Mail. Unavailable services on this day will include the purchase of money orders, postage stamps, Insurance on MPS items and the sending of items other than MPS (APO to APO). The CMR lobby will be unaffected by this upgrade. Normal service will return at each PSC the day after the upgrade. Your patience during this transition is greatly appreciated. Questions can be answered by calling 09662-832581 for Rose Barracks and 09641-83-6333 for Tower Barracks.

Fire Prevention Week 6-12 Oct: Cooking is the leading cause of home fires, according to the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). So, reduce fire hazards and “keep and eye on what your fry.”  Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you must leave the room, turn off the stove.  When you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, stay in the home, and use a timer.  Keep cooking areas clean and clear of combustibles (e.g. potholders, towels, rags, drapes and food packaging).  Keep children away from cooking areas by enforcing a “kid-free zone” of three feet around the stove.

 



If you have a fire in your microwave, turn it off immediately and keep the door closed. Never open the door until the fire is completely out. If in doubt, get out of the home and call the fire department Always keep an oven mitt and a lid nearby. If a small grease fire starts in a pan, smother the flames by carefully sliding the lid over the pan (make sure you are wearing the oven mitt). Turn off the burner. Do not move the pan. To keep the fire from restarting, do not remove the lid until it is completely cool. Never pour water on a grease fire. If the fire does not go out, get out of the home and call the fire department.

Women, Infants, and Children Overseas Program (WIC) The DoD offers the WIC Overseas Program to eligible participants living overseas. The program provides you and your family with several important benefits: nutritious food, tips on how to prepare balanced meals, nutrition and health screenings, and access to other resources that help you and your family lead healthier lives. The program is available to eligible participants living overseas, including: civilian employees, DoD contractors, military members and their family. If you or your family member is pregnant, postpartum, breastfeeding an infant, or a child up to five years of age, please call our Tower Barracks WIC office in Bldg 213 for an eligibility screening. Ammunition Community Amnesty Day 8 Oct: If you know of ammunition or weapons that need to be turned in, drop them off at the next Ammunition Supply Point (ASP) #1 Community Amnesty Day for ammunition and explosives (A&E). From 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m., come to the Unit Entrance of Ammunition Supply Point #1. Simply approach the gate and let the ASP personnel know that you have amnesty to turn in. They will take it from you on a “No Questions Asked” policy.

AFAP Conference 13-14 Nov: The Army Family Action Plan Conference brings together Soldiers, family members and civilians to discuss how we can improve the garrison with local leadership and subject matter experts. The Exchange Supports Healthy Kids in Lunch Program The Exchange supports the Healthy, Hungry-Free Kids Act by providing our school-aged children reduced fat foods. TKS switch from analog to digital AFN analog signal to the barracks has been switched to a digital signal. In order to receive the digital signal, Soldiers will need to rent a digital receiver from TKS for 11.84 Euro/month or 9.95 Euro/month without the VAT. School News VFW Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy scholarships Deadline 1 Nov: The VFW has two scholarships available for high school and middle school students.

Students in 6-8th grade are eligible for the Patriot’s Pen scholarship. Forty-six applicants will win scholarships ranging from $500-5,000. This year’s essay theme is “What Patriotism Means to Me.” You can find the application guidelines and form here. High schoolers are eligible for a $30,000 scholarship and $1,000-16,000 scholarships. Child Find: What is child-find screening? Preschool Child Find is a developmental screening for children ages 3-5 identifying children with developmental delays or other special education needs. For children under age 3 please contact EDIS at 09662-83-3221.

What is the process? A Child Find team made up of the preschool special needs service provider, speech and language pathologists and the occupational therapist screen the children for developmental delays. These free screenings take place monthly.

How does it work? Parent submits the Child Find questionnaire (which they can pick up in the office or find on the school website); they are set up with an appointment for the screening. When they come in for the screening the child must first pass a vision and hearing screen by our school nurse. Then they are screened by the team. If the child is suspected of having any delays the team will refer them for further formal evaluation.

Why is it important? When learning challenges are identified at a young age, early intervention can help the child with learning tasks.

If parents are interested, what do they need to do? They can go to the school’s website and find the link for Child Find.

Under that link is a questionnaire they need to fill out and email back to the email address provided on the form. Someone will be in contact with them within 48 hours. If they do not hear back please contact the school at 09662 832812 and let them know what happened. Baby and children second hand market 28 Sept: 230 different vendors will sell items for boys and girls, aged 0-14 years. There are also infant-basics, shoes, stroller, car-seats, toys, books, dvds, maternity-clothes, and much more. Location: Grafenwoehr, Jugendheim, Kolpingstrasse 4 (across from the Catholic Church, close to Gate1). Hosted by the Catholic Church Grafenwoehr (100% donation). Musical concert with “The Encores” 29 Sept: To celebrate 10 year sof making music together, the Lutheran Community of Grafenwoehr/Pressath as well as the German-American Choir „The Encores“ cordially invite you to a concert at 4 p.m. in the Lutheran Community Center (Martin-Luther-Strasse 4, right outside Grafenwoehr’s Gate # 1). Guided Tours Segway Tours The latest craze is guided tours through a city on a Segway. Various cities and locations offer those already; some regularly, some only on special occasions. Most large cities now offer Segway tours, for example Mindways Segway City Tours (in EN) has routes in Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Köln, Lübeck, and Travemünde.

1 p.m. daily: Walking Tours of Nürnberg in English Nuremberg was once an imperial residence, powerful free imperial city and international trading center. The prosperous city provided the ideal basis for an active cultural and intellectual life and the arts: Even today numerous buildings, monuments and artworks still reflect its former importance. The guided tour through the Old Town offers information and insights on the castle, the fountains and wells, churches and art as well as the city itself past and present.

Meeting point: Tourist Office at the Main Market Square (Hauptmarkt). Duration: approx. 2 ½ hrs. Price: 9 Euros per person, plus price of admission to castle (2 Euros pp). Children under 14 free in the company of their parents.

2 p.m. daily: Guided Tour of 91541 Rothenburg in English, of the most important sights in the historical district Meeting point: Market Square. Duration: 90 minutes. Fee: 6 Euros per person, payable cash to the tour guide 7 p.m. daily: Guided Tour in English of 91541 Rothenburg, with "The Executioner". Meet on Marktplatz, no prior booking required. The tours take place every day and cost 7 Euros per person.

There are tours in German which start at 6 p.m., and also in English, starting at 7 p.m. If you click in the link and scroll down, you can watch a 5-minute promo clip for the executioner's tour (in English but with a lovely Franconian accent). The clip shows some interesting hidden places that you normally don't get to see.

Every Wed. and Sat: 1:30 p.m.: Guided Tour of Regensburg, in English - "Experience a Historical City" In the course of this individually accented tour you get to know the Old City, with its patrician towered houses, the cathedral, the Old City Hall (all from the outside), the Stone Bridge and the Porta Praetoria. Our well-versed guides will be glad to answer any special questions you have, based on your own personal interests.

Fees: Adults 8 Euros, Reduced 5 Euros , Families 12 Euros. Duration: 1.5 hours.

Closest free car parks are "Dultplatz" (Am Protzenweiher/ Oberpfalzbrücke); adjacent "Protzenweiher" (opposite Protzenweiher 27); neighbouring "Wöhrdstraße" (at Wöhrdstraße 18); and adjacent "Unterer Wöhrd" (Wöhrdstraße 60/62). There is also the "Donaumarkt" parking lot (Donaumarkt 1) which is "a walk across the bridge" closer than the "Wöhrdstraße" car park, but it's not free-of-charge, and it's blocked on Saturday mornings for the Regensburg produce market. From any of these car parks it's only a very short walk across one of the bridges. You can get a map of Regensburg's city center from the Tourist Info in the "Altes Rathaus" (old city hall) for free.

Every Friday: 7 p.m. The Nuremberg Nightwatch Tour, in English - with the night watchwoman Re-live history through original, funny and exciting stories with the historian Dr. Ute Jaeger aka the night watchwoman.

Discover the traditional parts of Nürnberg and enjoy its most beautiful sights! Meeting Point is the fountain "Schöner Brunnen", Am Hauptmarkt, 90403 Nürnberg (in the pedestrian zone). Fees are 9 Euros pp.

Every Saturday: 1 p.m. Guided Tour of 97070 Würzburg in English Your stroll starts at the Falkenhaus (location of the Tourist Info, ph 0931-372-398) with its elaborate Rococo facade, followed by a visit to the Marienkapelle (St. Mary's Chapel) featuring sandstone sculptures by Tilman Riemenschneider.

Other highlights include the historical town hall building and the Romanesque cathedral "St. Kilian". From the bridge Alte Mainbrücke, you can enjoy fantastic views of the fortress Marienberg, the pilgrimage church Käppele and the famous vineyards. Tour lasts around 1.5 hrs, tickets cost 6 Euros per adult. Between 7 May and 29 October, additional English tours are held every Friday at 1 p.m.

Every Saturday: 2 p.m. Guided Tour in English of Albrecht Dürer's House in Nürnberg’s historical city center, AlbrechtDürer-Straße 39 (in the pedestrian zone). Admission is 5 Euros (normal), 2.50. Euros (reduced) Famous painter Albrecht Dürer lived in Nürnberg (1471 – 1528) – you might know him best for his “Praying Hands” –, and his original residence in Nürnberg’s pretty city center has been converted to a museum. Every Saturday, an actress in historical gowns offers guided tours of the house in English, telling its history from the viewpoint of Dürer's wife Agnes.

Every Saturday: 3 p.m. Guided Tour in English of the Church of St. Jacob's in 91541 Rothenburg.

A public and free tour in English of the famous StJakobs-Kirche (church). You only pay the entrance fee for the church: 2 Euros for adults; 0.50 Euros for students, pupils; groups from 10 person: 1.50 Euros. No reservation necessary! Duration: ca. 45 minutes. Meeting Point: front row inside the church.

Every Saturday: 8 p.m. Guided Tour in English with the Night-Watchman in 91541 Rothenburg on Marktplatz = Market Place. Take a walk back in time with the Night-watchman through the romantically-lit streets of Rothenburg.

Meeting point is on Market Square, the tour lasts about 60 minutes. Fee is 7 Euros per person, payable in cash to the Night-watchman.
