The Friday after Thanksgiving (Nov. 29) is both a German holiday and a Training Holiday. This means that many on-post facilities will be closed or have limited capabilities.

Friday after Thanksgiving limited operations IT: All, S-6/IT support for the Garrison will have minimal staffing.

CPAC: The Tower Barracks CPAC will have limited service.

MPD: There will be minimal services for ID cards, Passport Office and the MPD in Garmisch. The Casualty Office is on stand-by. ACAP and the Transition Office are OPEN. Friday after Thanksgiving on-post closures DRM: The Resource Management Bldg. 433 will be closed. For emergency, please contact the IOC at DSN 475-7226, CIV 09641-83-7226.

Vehicle Registration: Vehicle Registration will be closed.

MP Admin: The Installation Pass Office and MP Records Specialists in Bldg. 2099 in Rose Barracks will be closed.

ACS Satellite: The ACS Satellite Office located in Tower Barracks Bldg. 244 will be closed. All ACS services will be available from the Rose Barracks ACS Center in Bldg. 322, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Tower View: The restaurant, conference center and Patton Fireside Lounge in Tower Barracks Bldg.

209 will be closed.

Tax Office: The Tax Office which handles VAT forms in Tower Barracks Bldg. 539 will be closed.

Army Substance Abuse Program: Emergency classes for Suicide Prevention and Clinical Counseling.

DHR: Continuing Education Services, Workforce Development, FOIA/PI and Civilian Misconduct will be closed.

MPD: Military Personnel Division in Hohenfels is closed and In/Out Processing in Tower/Rose Barracks is closed.

Security: The Security Office (fingerprinting) will be closed and will reopen on 2 Dec. at 8 a.m.

Thanksgiving safety tips *Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food. *Stay in the home when cooking your turkey and check on it frequently. *Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot and kids should stay 3 feet away. *Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee could cause serious burns. *Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks or bags. *Keep knives out of the reach of children. *Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child. *Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children — up high in a locked cabinet. *Never leave children alone in room with a lit a candle. *Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Test them by pushing the test button.

28 Nov: Feast on Thanksgiving goodies in Tower and Rose Barracks on T-day. 11 a.m.- 2p.m. and 4:30-6 p.m.at the Tower Barracks DFAC and 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Stryker Inn DFAC in Rose Barracks. On Thanksgiving morning, a continental breakfast will be served 7-8 p.m. (reduced hours.)

Commissaries are scanning IDs Commissaries throughout the Department of Defense, including our local commissaries, are now scanning customers’ ID cards. IDs will still be checked at the register and at the SCO. After the commissary has verified that the shopper is a valid ID cardholder, then the customer or cashier will scan the ID at the register prior to scanning groceries.

Winter driving safety tips * Be aware of FOG and always drive with your lights on. Use the right side lane markings if visibility is limited and drive with low beam headlights. * Watch for FARM EQUIPMENT on the roads during the harvesting season. * ANIMALS will more prevalent along roads as the seasons change. * CHILDREN will be on the streets and roads as they travel back and forth from school. Please be extra cautious in the early mornings and late afternoons. * It is not too early for BLACK ICE so be prepared and start preparing your car for the winter weather.

Flu shots Now – 29 Nov: Health clinics in Rose Barracks and Tower Barracks have started taking walk-ins for the shot and nasal spray. Vaccinations will be administered to family members, HQDA civilians, and retirees at the Tower and Rose Barracks Health Clinics 8-11 a.m. Monday-Friday and 1-3 p.m. Monday-Thursday. DoDDS students will receive vaccinations at their respective schools. Students unable to receive vaccinations at their respective schools may be seen at their community health clinic on a case by case basis.

Soldiers on Tower Barracks will receive their immunizations during first formations. Unit POCs should contact the Grafenwoehr Health Clinic Medical Readiness NCO, SSG Antonio, at 475-6142 to coordinate for immunizations.

Soldiers on Rose Barracks will receive their immunizations from the Soldier Centered Medical Home (BLDG 701) starting on 2 Oct. Our strength is our community! National American Indian Heritage Month celebration 22 Nov: Please help us celebrate National American Indian Heritage Month with us on Friday, 10:30-11:30 a.m., at the Tower Barracks Field House, Bldg 547. This is a free event to recognize the contributions, sacrifices and diversity of Native American Indians. Please come out and increase your knowledge of the cultures. Community Huddle 26 Nov: The Community Huddle is a bi-monthly, Town Hall style meeting, hosted by Garrison Commander COL James Saenz, for all community members to ask questions to civilian and military leadership and to find out the latest information on programs, events, construction, and other important issues happening in the community. The next Community Huddle will be in the Tower Barracks Tower View Conference Center on Tuesday, 26 Nov, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

Recommended holiday mailing dates The 2013 holiday season mailing dates for postal customers assigned to the European theater.

26 Nov: Space Available Mail (SAM) 3 Dec: Parcel Airlift (PAL) 10 Dec: First Class/Priority Mail 17 Dec: Priority Mail Express These dates are for mail originating in Europe and destined to locations in the United States. Mail originating in the U.S. and sent to European APO/FPO/DPO addresses use similar mailing dates.

All postal patrons should plan ahead and mail early to ensure letters, cards, and packages arrive in time for the holidays.

Early mailing helps patrons avoid long lines at the post office and affords them an opportunity to use the least expensive SAM option.

Tree Lighting Ceremonies 3 & 5 Dec: Come join us for our annual Tree Lighting Ceremonies to ring in the holiday season. In Tower Barracks, the lighting will be on 3 Dec. at 5 p.m. in the PX overflow lot. In Rose Barracks, it will be on 5 Dec. in the PX parking lot at 5 p.m.

CFC-O has been extended Now-6 Dec: The 2013 Combined Federal Campaign-Overseas Europe (CFC-O) is starting again. CFC allows members of the community to donate to organizations and give to charitable organizations or give back to the community. Whether protecting the environment, honoring military veterans, advancing medical research, aiding refugees or providing job training to the homeless, the CFC-O has something for everyone. Exchange New Car Sales closed 22-24 Nov: All Exchange New Car Sales facilities will be closed for corporate training and will reopen the next business day.

Bavaria Community and Spouses' Club events Go to their Facebook page for upcoming events and club news. Over the summer the Grafenwoehr Community and Spouses Club (GCSC) disbanded and turned over its assets to the Vilseck Community and Spouses Club (VCSC). The Vilseck Community and Spouses Club is undergoing a name change and will now be the Bavaria Community and Spouses Club (BCSC) which will serve our entire community including Tower Barracks and Rose Barracks.

6 Jan: School resumes Child Find: What is child-find screening? Preschool Child Find is a developmental screening for children ages 3-5 identifying children with developmental delays or other special education needs. For children under age 3 please contact EDIS at 09662-83-3221.

What is the process? A Child Find team made up of the preschool special needs service provider, speech and language pathologists and the occupational therapist screen the children for developmental delays. These free screenings take place monthly.

How does it work? Parent submits the Child Find questionnaire (which they can pick up in the office or find on the school website); they are set up with an appointment for the screening. When they come in for the screening the child must first pass a vision and hearing screen by our school nurse. Then they are screened by the team. If the child is suspected of

having any delays the team will refer them for further formal evaluation.

Why is it important? When learning challenges are identified at a young age, early intervention can help the child with learning tasks.

If parents are interested, what do they need to do? They can go to the school’s website and find the link for Child Find.

Under that link is a questionnaire they need to fill out and email back to the email address provided on the form. Someone will be in contact with them within 48 hours. If they do not hear back please contact the school at 09662 832812 and let them know what happened. (Just in case the email was rejected as SPAM) Continuous School Progress Goals: Goal 1: By 2016 all students will improve competency with numbers and operations as measured by increased performance on assessments.

St. Nikolaus Day 6 Dec: In the German-speaking countries as well as Holland and Belgium, 6 Dec is the most distinctive children's festival of the year. When evening comes, St. Nikolaus, a grey-haired man with flowing beard, bishop's raiment, gold embroidered cope, mitre and pastoral staff, will knock on doors and enquire about the behavior of the children. Sometimes, when St. Nikloaus comes knocking, the children are expected to recite a verse, sing, or otherwise show their skills.

There is also the "Donaumarkt" parking lot (Donaumarkt 1) which is "a walk across the bridge" closer than the "Wöhrdstraße" car park, but it's not free-of-charge, and it's blocked on Saturday mornings for the Regensburg produce market. From any of these car parks it's only a very short walk across one of the bridges. This is Munich's main Christmas market, and it is also the oldest in the city. A highlight every year is the "Himmelswerkstatt" (Santa's workshop) for children ages 6 to 12. The Feuerzangenbowle is very popular in Germany due to an old B&W film played repeatedly on TV. Oberammergau 2 Dec: 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.: in 82487 Oberammergau, 20 km / 12 miles north of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, on Kirchplatz around the Church of St. Peter and Paul along Ettaler Straße. After a church service, it is tradition that the "Oberammergauer Bläserquartett" (brass quartet) opens the market in front of the church. Of course you'll find everything at this market that you expect: handcrafted goods, decorations, candles, foods, and much more. All sales revenue will be donated to charity. A festive end to this Christmas market is the Advent concert in the Church of St. Peter and Paul at 7:30 p.m.

14 - 16 Dec. & 21 - 23 Dec: in 82487 Oberammergau in front of the "Pilatushaus" on Ludwig-Thoma-Straße 10, all the way to Max-Streibl-Platz. Opening hours: Fri. 3 - 7 p.m., Sat. midday - 7 p.m., and Sun. midday - 6 p.m. This is a traditional Bavarian Christmas market just as you would expect it: a 'live' nativity scene, performances by local choirs and brass bands, a children's carousel, rides in a horse-drawn carriage, Alphorn blowers, and of course the Nikolaus will bring little tokens to the little darlings.

Pottenstein 1 Dec: 1 - 8 p.m. in 91278 Pottenstein. Many attractions await the visitors, but (arguably) the best will be rides in horsedrawn carriages through the pretty town. Pottenstein is in the beautiful Fränkische Schweiz.

Pressath 1 Dec: in 92690 Pressath on Schulstrasse. The market is open on Sunday from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. You'll find everything at this market that you expect: handcrafted goods, decorations, candles, organic food products, and much more local produce. 28 Nov. - 23 Dec: Romantic Christmas Market at Schloss Thurn und Taxis (palace), 93047 Regensburg, Emmeramsplatz. The romantic backdrop of St. Emmeram gives the "Romantischer Weihnachtsmarkt” at the Thurn und Taxis palace an incredible flair. Thousands of candles, torches and lanterns illuminate the impressive courtyard and almost lead you to believe that the cozy little huts are straight out of a fairy tale. Right in the middle, a huge Christmas tree oversees the busy little Christmas village.

Opening hours: Sun. - Wed. midday - 10 p.m., Thu. - Sat. midday - 11 p.m. Admission is 6 euros per person. Children, 6 – 16 years, are 2 euros. Groups of ten people receive one ticket for free (9+1).

Experience the enchanting atmosphere at the "Reiterlesmarkt" Christmas market. This Market dates back to the 15th century and is one of the oldest in Germany. Its name refers to an old Teutonic legend. Before Christianity, the Teutons believed in a rider who would take care of a deceased person’s soul. While the Teutons were afraid of this mystic figure, people in the middle ages changed their attitude towards this rider, eagerly expecting him to appear because they saw him as a friendly messenger who brought gifts to all men on earth. A painting of this famous rider can be seen on the facade of the city hall. When the market opens or when the children of the town go on their candlelight procession, he comes alive again.

The Reiterlesmarkt (in English) is always held from last Friday in November to the day before Christmas Eve.
