During morning and after school hours, concentrate on the road and visually scan your surroundings.
When driving through a school zone or an area where children are getting on/off a school bus, watch for children near the road, at intersections and in medians.
Students and school busses will be back on the street. Remember: Cell phones may ONLY be used with a “hands-free” device. Stay Alert!
And simply SLOW DOWN in school zones and residential areas.

Do you want to be a JAG (and have the Army pay for law school?) The Army is looking for dedicated and talented junior officers who could become JAGs. The Office of The Judge Advocate General is now accepting applications for the Army’s Funded Legal Education Program (FLEP). Under the FLEP program, the Army projects sending up to 25 active duty commissioned officers to law school at government expense. Interested officers should immediately sign up for the LSATs as the scores are needed for the selection board. Selected officers will attend law school beginning the fall of 2014 and will remain on active duty while attending law school. Interested officers should review Chapter 14, AR 27-1, to determine their eligibility. Officers serving in Bavaria interested in applying should contact their unit’s legal advisor (see contact info here.) or the 7A JMTC Deputy Staff Judge Advocate, Major Ed Linneweber, at DSN 475-8061, edward.c.linneweber.mil@mail.mil. The OSJA will hold an informational briefing about the Funded Legal Education Program from 10:30-11:30 a.m. on 27 Aug. The briefings will be in the 7A OSJA Conference Room, Bldg. 106 in Tower Barracks.
Postal Centers back on normal hours The Rose Barracks and Tower Barracks Postal Service Centers have returned to normal operating hours. The return to normal hours is due to the end of civilian employee furloughs. Hours of operation are as follows: Postal Finance (sending mail) and Official Mail: Mon-Fri 11:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Parcel Pick-Up Counter: 11:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
TARP, SETA, OPSEC and Anti-terrorism Level 1 training The United States Army Garrison Grafenwoehr (Antiterrorism and Security Divisions) along with the 66th Military Intelligence Group and JMTC Intelligence and Security, will be conducting the quarterly Community Security Awareness Training consisting of the Threat Awareness and Reporting Program (TARP), Security Education Training Awareness (SETA), Operation Security (OPSEC), and Anti-terrorism Level 1 Refresher Training. 4th Quarter Community Security Awareness Training Schedule: 18 Sept: Tower Barracks, Tower Theater, Bldg. 620. 10:30-11:30 a.m. (LN employees), 1:30-4 p.m. (US personnel) 19 Sept: Rose Barracks, Post Theater, Bldg. 354. 9-11:30 a.m. (US personnel), 1:30-2:30 p.m. (LN employees) This training is a mandatory annual requirement for all DoD personnel including Military, AF/NAF (both US and LN); U.S. Contractor employees are welcome.
Positive discipline seminar 26 Sept: Come join the Special Needs Advisory Council (SNAC) for a seminar and interactive event that focuses on ways to positively shape your child’s behavior. There will be food, a "make and take" craft for parents (with a positive behavior theme), and crafts and games for children. There will also be an information table available with materials covering positive behavior shaping strategies. Sponsorship key to readiness and resiliency Every Soldier or DA civilian undergoing a PCS must be assigned a sponsor. But, assigning a sponsor is only the first step – the quality of the sponsorship program rest solely on the shoulders of sponsors. All sponsors must do their best to welcome their newcomer and make them feel at home. Remember that it is extremely important to stay in touch with new community members before, during, and after arrival. Sponsors should answer questions, and if they need help, they can ask ACS, the unit sponsorship coordinator or contact the Garrison Sponsorship Liaison. Exchange News Exchange to remove 891 magazines from stores The Army and Air Force Exchange Service is permanently removing 891 magazines from its stock. This includes, among other titles, The Saturday Evening Post, SpongeBob Comics, Home Buyers Guide and Playboy. This move will reduce space by 33 percent. The additional exchange floor and shelf space will be given to products and services such as electronics, whose demand is increasing.
Exchange AFN Decoders credit AFN Europe is eliminating one of its two satellite transponders in order to reduce redundancy and overall operating cost. In preparation for AFN migrating to an upgraded digital signal, viewers should not purchase or lease any decoder that is not the newest model, the CISCO D9865. When the switch to this digital signal occurs, all AFN decoders other than the D9865 will no longer function. Exchange customer can bring in their old AFN decoder to their local Exchange PowerZone and receive a $40 credit toward the purchase of a new CISCO D9865. This only applies to new purchase and not leased decoders.

Grafenwoehr Girl Scouts looking for scouts and volunteers Attention Scouts! Grafenwoehr Girl Scouts serves girls from Kindergarten through 12th grade in USAG Grafenwoehr. We foster leadership in our girls through activities, events, and community service opportunities at the troop and committee level. Girl Scouts is also recruiting 9th -12th grade girls to be a part of the virtual troop that travels and attends high school-level events. Scouts even have the opportunity to win the Girl Scout Gold Award, which opens doors for scholarship money post-graduation. Attention volunteers! The Girl Scouts are looking for leaders and co-leaders and management team members. For those who have a skill but can't make a full-time commitment, the Scouts are always looking for subject matter expert in all fields. Volunteers needed at the USO Grafenwoehr If you'd like to help your USO, the military and their family members, come by the USO center in Tower Barracks Bldg. 150 and sign up to volunteer. The American Red Cross is looking for qualified Volunteer Health and Safety Instructors for our community. Call today to see if you qualify. Seeking Emergency Placement Care Providers The children in the USAGG need you. The Emergency Placement Care (EPC) Program trains individuals to become 24 hour providers for at risk children. The community is in need of more providers as the number of children in imminent danger increased due to the deployment rotation of family members. Bayern Rangers hockey team looking for players 24 & 31 Aug, 4 & 8 Sept: The Bayern Rangers ice hockey team is looking for new players. The team will hold open practices in Weiden on 24 Aug, 4:30-6 p.m.; 31 Aug, 4:30-6 p.m.; 4 Sept, 9:45-11 p.m. and 8 Sept, 12:30-2 p.m. To join in the fun, just show up. Fall Car Boot Sales registration begins 23 Aug: The wildly popular Library Car Boot Sale is happening again. Bring your items to sell, or browse for great deal. This sale is open to ID Card Holders and choice selling spots are assigned on a first-registered, first-served basis. New ODR complex grad opening 24 Sept: We are excited to announce the opening of the new Outdoor Recreation (ODR) Complex at Camp Heritage/Dickhaeuter Lake. The facility will offer a great variety of recreational programs, including Leisure Travel Services. Starting 22 Aug, we are consolidating our programs at the Rose Barracks Outdoor Recreation, Bldg 2236. The Leisure Travel Services in Tower Barracks, Bldg. 539 will close.

Mass CPR training days 27 & 28 Sept: Are you confident you can perform CPR in an emergency? Could you do it on a toddler? What about an infant? The community is welcome to the Red Cross Mass CPR/First Aid/AED Event at the Tower Barracks Field House, Bldg. 547. The training will be set up with qualified instructors to certify you in CPR/AED/First Aid. The class is $40 per person and open to all ID card holders. Grand opening of new ODR complex 24 Sept: The new ODR complex has its grand opening today. The complex is located near Dickhaeuter Lake and will feature a high-ropes course, climbing wall, campgrounds, two and three bedroom cabins, equipment checkout, playgrounds, and fishing, paddling and kayaking on the lake.

VFW Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy scholarships Deadline 1 Nov: The VFW has two scholarships available for high school and middle school students. Students in 6-8th grade are eligible for the Patriot’s Pen scholarship. Forty-six applicants will win scholarships ranging from $500-5,000. This year’s essay theme is “What Patriotism Means to Me.” You can find the application guidelines and form here. High schoolers are eligible for a $30,000 scholarship and $1,000-16,000 scholarships. Preschool Child Find is a developmental screening for children ages 3-5 identifying children with developmental delays or other special education needs. For children under age 3 please contact EDIS at 09662-83-3221. What is the process? A Child Find team made up of the preschool special needs service provider, speech and language pathologists and the occupational therapist screen the children for developmental delays. These free screenings take place monthly. How does it work? Parent submits the Child Find questionnaire (which they can pick up in the office or find on the school website); they are set up with an appointment for the screening. When they come in for the screening the child must first pass a vision and hearing screen by our school nurse. Then they are screened by the team. If the child is suspected of having any delays the team will refer them for further formal evaluation. Why is it important? When learning challenges are identified at a young age, early intervention can help the child with learning tasks. If parents are interested, what do they need to do? They can go to the school’s website and find the link for Child Find. Under that link is a questionnaire they need to fill out and email back to the email address provided on the form. Someone will be in contact with them within 48 hours. If they do not hear back please contact the school at 09662 832812 and let them know what happened. Kirwa fest at Schlicht 23-26 Aug: St.-Georg-Strasse 11 (behind church) 92249 Vilseck. This fest is a great opportunity for all U.S. soldiers and families to experience traditional Bavarian culture, dances, food and drink. The pre-kirwa fest is at the Gasthaus Ströll (first Gasthaus coming from Rose Barracks) on Fri evening with roasted pig, ducks, beer and music. On Sat at 1 p.m., the Kirwatree is raised (there will be freibier) and at 8 p.m., music will start up in the tent next to the church. The fest will pick up again at 1 p.m. on Sun when the boys of the town ride a tractor through the streets to pick up the girls for a dance around the tree at 3 p.m. On Mon, the fest begins again at 7:30 p.m.
Castle Leuchtenberg restoration celebration 24 & 25 Aug: Castle Leuchtenberg (located between Weiden and Cham on St. B22) is celebrating the 10 year anniversary of its restoration. The festivities start at 2 p.m. on Sat with sword fighting knights, followed by a bow hunting competition and a play from 13th century Bavaria. On Sun, starting at 11 a.m., there are kids plays, crossbow shooting, more bow hunting and story-telling knights.
Culinary Evening: Kulinarischer Abend 24 Aug: 6 p.m., in 93149 Nittenau, on Marktplatz (ca. 30 km / 20 miles NE of Regensburg). The whole market place will turn into one big restaurant, with stalls and booths set up by local restaurateurs and businesses, selling food, wine, and other treats. There will also be live music and a lively atmosphere.
Potato Harvest: "Erpflgrobn" 24 Aug: 1 p.m., at the Oberpfälzer Freilandmuseum (open-air museum) in Neusath 200 (part of 92507 Nabburg, ca. 31 km / 19 miles south of Weiden). Horses will pull potatoes out of the ground with old farming equipment from 1-5 p.m., and you and your kids can help pick them up. After the harvest, every helper gets to taste a freshly boiled potato, or you go to the "Wirtshaus" (inn) where they have special potato dishes that day. A free guided tour in German with lots of information about potatoes and harvesting takes place at 2 p.m. Kids can also play some fun old games at 1 p.m., or make potato prints. Admission (only GE) is € 4.50, a family ticket for the day is € 11. Regular opening hours are Tue - Sun, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. (last admission at 5 p.m.). Closed on Mondays unless that Monday is a German holiday. Free parking is available outside the museum's gates. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a short leash.
Volksfest in Beilngries 30 Aug-8 Sept: in 92339 Beilngries at the Volksfestplatz along Sandstraße (ca. 45 km / 28 miles SW of Hohenfels). Specially brewed fest beer will be served in the fest tent where you can also enjoy typical Bavarian music. One of the highlights will be the grand parade on 1 Sep. at 2 p.m. There will also be a family afternoon with reduced fares on Wed, and the fest will end with a brilliant fireworks display. On Tue, 3 Sept., a large street market will accompany the Volksfest. It is held along Hauptstraße in the town center and is open 8 a.m.-3 p.m.
Market for Traditional Bavarian Clothing: Trachtenmarkt 31 Aug & 1 Sept: 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., in 91171 Greding, on and around Marktplatz (ca. 55 km / 34 miles west of Hohenfels). The Trachtenmarkt will be held in all weather. Admission: € 2, Kids under 18 are free. This market will sell anything you need for a Tracht: from the complete outfit to the fabrics and patterns (for all tailors out there), accessories, books (in German), and the all-important advice. It's also become a popular tradition to play music at the market.

Meeting Point: front row inside the church. Every Saturday: 8 p.m. Guided Tour in English with the Night-Watchman in 91541 Rothenburg on Marktplatz = Market Place. Take a walk back in time with the Night-watchman through the romantically-lit streets of Rothenburg. Meeting point is on Market Square, the tour lasts about 60 minutes. Fee is 7 Euros per person, payable in cash to the Night-watchman.
