April is designated as the month to demonstrate our appreciation and admiration of military children and their role in military families. As we honor the individual and family sacrifice that our men and women in the military make protecting our freedom, we recognize that children serve too! This special Month of the Military Child is an opportunity to recognize the resilience and strength of military children and youth and to thank them for their sacrifice and service.

The month-long celebration will feature activities and special events across USAG Bavaria. CYSS has established partnership with many agencies and host nation services that support growth and development of children. The premier event is the Kinderfest Celebration hosted by CYSS (Grafenwoehr) on Friday April 25 from 3:306:30 p.m. at the "Wild B.O.A.R" Outdoor Recreation on Tower Barracks, Bldg. RC 600. Spring motorcycle safety tips BEWARE! Road and weather conditions are perfect for our local motorcycle riders to be out and about enjoying the early spring like weather. Motorcycle safety is the reasonability for both the motorcyclist and auto drivers. We share the road and the reasonability of ensuring all enjoy the long weekend. Please remember these simple but needed safety considerations: 1. Motorcycles move fast and are easy to overlook. Make sure you clear intersections.

2. Motorcyclists: You are hard to see so make sure your intentions are known before you commit to them.

3. Motorcyclists are responsible to operate their bikes within their ridding capabilities.

4. Car drivers should allow more following distance between a motorcycle and their vehicles.

5. Group riding for motorcyclists use unique dynamics; motorcycle riders should make sure they’re prepared to ride in group settings.

6. Protective equipment is required at all times.

7. Community motorcycle mentors must inform their riders to keep them and the rest of the community safe.

8. Leaders must be actively involved in their motorcyclists’ safety.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month events April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. To do our part, USAG Bavaria is hosting a series of events to raise awareness of sexual assault and to show support for survivors. Please come out to support this cause.

Important Vehicle Registration information In accordance with AER 190-1, individuals have a responsibility to go to their local vehicle field registration site (Bldg. 301, Tower Barracks) and update their registration any time there is a change to administrative data -- unit of assignment and/or mailing address. Administrative changes are FREE. If you have recently moved here from another garrison in Europe, or changed units within USAG Bavaria, you are still responsible for updating the administrative information on your vehicle registration, even if your existing plates have not yet expired.

Laundry appointments for TCP Vilseck Due to the high volume and high workload at the Troop Collection Point Laundry and Dry Cleaning Services in Vilseck, it is highly recommended to make appointments for drop off to avoid long waiting times. To make an appointment call DSN 476-3026, CIV 09662-83-3026. It is also advised that Soldier use the TCP Hohenfels if possible. It is in Hohenfels Training Area, Bldg. 323, DSN 466-2862.

It’s tax time!

Tax Centers are the easiest way to file your taxes for free. Last tax season, tax centers in Bavaria processed 10,220 tax returns, saving more than $1.5 million in commercial preparation and filing fees, and generating over $19 million in refunds. The filing deadline for the tax year is 15 April, but the overseas filing deadline is 16 June. Click here for contact info and tax filing document requirements. US Army Health Clinic Vilseck Modernization & Expansion On 25 March 2013, a 34.7 million dollar state-of-the-art Army Medical Home (Patient and Soldier Centered Medical Homes) clinic addition and alteration project was awarded. This project will quadruple the size of United States Army Health Clinic Vilseck, consolidate offices and scattered health care services from 3 outlying buildings, and move Soldier and civilian treatment services under the same roof to greatly increase the quality and efficiency of healthcare delivery.

This expansion project will facilitate the delivery of high quality healthcare utilizing the Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) model of patient care delivery.

Tower Barracks Legal Office Closure 3 April: The Tower Barracks Legal Office will be closed for all services today. The Legal Office will reopen on 4 April for regular business. This applies to the Tower Barracks office, only. Please plan accordingly!

USAREUR Training Holidays 4 & 7 April: Both days are USAREUR training holidays. Please check locally for changed operating hours at all access gates to the garrisons.

Installation Planning Board (IPB) 29 April: US Army Garrison Bavaria will conduct the next Installation Planning Board (IPB) on 29 April 2014 from 1:30 3:30 p.m. The forum is chaired by the JMTC Commander, BG Walter E Piatt, and the USAG Bavaria Commander, COL James E. Saenz. Key leaders from across the community will gather at the JMTC headquarters to synthesize the results of nearly 50 planning activities that occur throughout the year. These include Mission and Training Support, Transformation, Stationing, Real Property Planning, and Community Services and Programs. The IPB will provide a holistic approach to decision-making that best supports the Mission, Soldiers, Civilians and their Families. Additionally, it will further enhance the development of the Bavaria Military Community into a stream-lined, agile enterprise that is customer-focused and results-driven in support of current and future missions. The German-American Volksfest is back 1-3 Aug: Great news! We've just learned that the 56th annual German-American Volksfest will be held Aug. 1-3 at U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria. So make your plans to attend.

Passport Office Closure – Tower Barracks 7-9 April: The USAG Bavaria Tower Barracks Passport Office will be will be closed 7-9 April due to mandatory staff passport certification training. The Tower Barracks Passport Office will reopen 10 April for full services.

SHARP Stand-Down days 15-17 April: On these days, Soldiers and Department of the Army Civilians will conduct face-to-face leader engagement and small group discussions about SHARP. Leaders must be prepared to discuss individual, unit and organizational responsibilities to uphold SHARP standards.

Bulk Trash Pick-Up The County Neustadt/WN will pick up bulk trash over the next few months. Bulk trash must be curbside, in front of your home no later than 6 a.m. on the scheduled pick-up day. Pick-up is provided by contractors of the County Neustadt. Please note that pick-ups will occur in 3 stages based on types of items.

Everything, that is too big or too heavy to go into the normal refuse container, such as: Furniture, mattresses, carpets, washing machines, dryers, radios, TVs, ovens, stoves, bicycles, strollers, and other items which cannot be dismantled, torn or broken down to a size that would fit in the regular refuse container. Each single item should be no larger than 80x40x32 inches and should not be heavier than 110 lb. Bulk trash consisting of metal (i.e. bicycles, washers, dryers, stoves, etc.) and electronic equipment (such as large appliances, small appliances, cooling devices, information & telecommunications including entertainment equipment) should be put out separately next to the normal bulk trash.

What will not be picked up?

- Normal refuse, recyclable material, Yard waste like cut grass, branches, etc...

- Hazardous waste - Tires, car parts, batteries, wrecked cars, motorcycles - Doors and windows (with or without glass), laminated floor, rouleaus - Construction debris - Night storage heaters Pick-ups will be performed in three steps: 1. Combustible material: like upholstered furniture, mattresses, rugs, etc...

2. Electronic equipment: i.e. TV, PC, printer, scanner, radio, VCR, DVD player, monitor, vacuum cleaner, refrigerators and freezers (no permission sticker required anymore), etc… together with Household Metal items: i.e. bicycles, ironing boards, washer, dryer, dishwasher, stoves (oil stoves and oil barrels must be totally emptied) etc…

3. Salvageable wooden furniture: (i.e. bed frame, wardrobe, chair, table, etc….) *Smaller electronic appliances (i.e. hairdryer, toothbrush, telephones, drilling machine etc.) should be brought to the drop off point “Company Bergler” in Weiherhammer, Etzenrichter Str. 2, Mon.-Fri. from 8-4 p.m., CIV 09605-92090.

Bulk Trash Pickup – City of Weiden For City of Weiden to include the communities Rothenstadt, Ullersricht and Neunkirchen - Pickup has to be requested at the City of Weiden twice a year. Military Clothing Stores offer Free Alterations for Wounded Soldiers In an effort to support and assist severely wounded, ill and injured Soldiers, the Army & Air Force Exchange Service is offering free alterations and modifications for this select group at all 79 Army Military Clothing stores around the world.

This Army-led initiative ensures all wounded Soldiers receive free alterations and modifications on all issued uniforms in accordance with the Wounded Warrior Clothing Support Program to include the Army Service, Combat and Improved Physical Fitness uniforms as well as undergarments. Eligible Soldiers must present an approved Army Form 3078 along with the prescribed modifications by the physical or occupational therapist to receive free services. The Tower Barracks, Rose Barracks and Hohenfels Military Clothing stores and Alterations fully support this service to the community.

Volunteers and other help needed Red Cross looking for CPR instructors We are looking for CPR course instructors. If you are interesting in becoming a Red Cross certified CPR/First Aid/AED course instructor, you must already have a valid CPR/FA/AED certification card and must be able to teach 3 classes over the next 12 months. Have You Saved a Life Today? Red Cross Needs Volunteers Do you have a background in the medical field or teaching field? The American Red Cross is looking for qualified Volunteer Health and Safety Instructors for our community. Call today to see if you qualify.

Health and Safety Instructors: Volunteers teach lifesaving skills in the community. Classes such as Babysitting, CPR, First Aid, AED and other safety presentations.

Armed Forces Caseworkers: Volunteers work with local members of the military and their families ensuring the delivery of emergency communications.

Health Fair Volunteers: Volunteers staff a table at events in the community and engage those attending in conversations about preparedness and safety.

Office of Volunteers: Volunteers assist with writing volunteer job descriptions, setting up volunteer orientation courses, conduct volunteer screening interviews, help with volunteer placement, record keeping, and recognition. Primary Group Exercise Ceritfication – Registration Deadline 15 April: This course, on 3 May, is a review of AFAA’s Basic Exercise Standards and Guidelines, exercise science and exam criteria, followed by written and practical exams. Indoor Cycling Instructor Training – Registration Deadline 15 April: This workshop, on 4 May, is designed for current indoor cycling instructors and those interested in instructing group indoor cycling classes. Course focuses on “how to create a dynamic, high-energy indoor cycling class for all-level students.” Learn safe cycling practices, correct technique, proper alignment and effective training principles to ensure sound training decisions. Kids in the Kitchen 16 April & 14 May: The Grafenwoehr WIC office is offering 3 upcoming classes to help your picky eaters and mealtime pleasers the chance to put on the chef hat and help create healthy, yet delicious, masterpieces. One class will be offered in each March, April, and May and will feature 1-2 new recipes. Children (and adults) will be encouraged to try a food with secret ingredients, and then create their own version of the mysteriously yummy food. While they’re getting lost in their creativity, a WIC dietitian will be discussing the importance of enjoying healthy foods and how to make scrumptious meals with them. Preschool Child Find is a developmental screening for children ages 3-5 identifying children with developmental delays or other special education needs. For children under age 3 please contact EDIS at 09662-83-3221.

What is the process? A Child Find team made up of the preschool special needs service provider, speech and language pathologists and the occupational therapist screen the children for developmental delays. These free screenings take place monthly.

How does it work? Parent submits the Child Find questionnaire (which they can pick up in the office or find on the school website); they are set up with an appointment for the screening. When they come in for the screening the child must first pass a vision and hearing screen by our school nurse. Then they are screened by the team. If the child is suspected of having any delays the team will refer them for further formal evaluation.

Why is it important? When learning challenges are identified at a young age, early intervention can help the child with learning tasks.

If parents are interested, what do they need to do? They can go to the school’s website and find the link for Child Find.

Under that link is a questionnaire they need to fill out and email back to the email address provided on the form. Someone will be in contact with them within 48 hours. If they do not hear back please contact the school at 09662 832812 and let them know what happened. (Just in case the email was rejected as SPAM) Continuous School Progress Goals: Goal 1: By 2016 all students will improve competency with numbers and operations as measured by increased performance on assessments.

Easter Market 4-21 April: in 9043 Nürnberg, on Hauptmarkt. Opening hours: Monday - Saturday 9:30 a.m. - 7 p.m. | Sunday and Easter Monday 10:30 a.m. - 7 p.m. | Closed on Karfreitag (Good Friday)! Due to the difficult parking situation, it is highly recommended you take the train into Nürnberg.

Easter Market 5-6 April: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. both days, in 91550 Dinkelsbühl, at the Spitalhof in Spitalgasse (ca. 45 km / 28 miles SW of Ansbach). Over 50 vendors will be selling decorations, jewellery, books, locally produced foods, flowers and much more in the romantic courtyard. Children and adults alike will be delighted by the animals in the petting zoo. Dinkelsbühl is often treated - unjustly - as the little brother of Rothenburg. It is a beautiful city with historical buildings and an intact city wall surrounding it; plus there is a stunning cathedral, and it is slightly less overrun than Rothenburg.

Easter Market 6 April: 11 a.m. - 6 p.m., in 92224 Amberg, at the Stadtmuseum (city museum), Zeughausstraße 18, ph 0962-110-284.

Opening hours of the museum: Tuesday - Friday 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., Saturday, Sunday and German holidays: 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Admission is € 3 pp, children over 6 pay € 1.50. One adult with at least two children pays € 5.50. A family ticket (2 adults with at least 2 children) is € 9.50. Tickets to exhibitions might cost a little extra. Best free parking lots at "Auf der Wiesen", the car park behind the Hotel Arcadia and the Kurfürstenbad (indoor swimming pool); the other one is the park block opposite Sulzbacher Straße 5. Both parking areas are only a tiny walking distance from Amberg's city center.

Street Market and Open Stores: Frühjahrsmarkt = Spring Market 6 April: midday - 5 p.m., in 96114 Hirschaid, Nürnberger Straße (ca. 15 km / 9.5 miles SE of Bamberg). Stores will open midday - 5 p.m. The street market is complemented with a farmers market by the Rathaus = town hall.

Easter Market 6 April: 12:30 p.m., in 92345 Dietfurt, in the inner courtyard of historic "Gasthof Stirzer", Hauptstraße 45 (ca. 35 km / 22 miles SW of Hohenfels). Find many handcrafted wares and food products at this lovely Easter market. There will be musical entertainment, and children will enjoy the little stables with sheep and lambs. Even the Easter bunny will stop by!

Open Stores and Special Sales 6 April: 12:30 - 5:30 p.m., in 92339 Beilngries, along Hauptstraße and Ringstraße (ca. 45 km / 28 miles SW of Hohenfels). Not only will many of the stores be open, the town will also be brimming with all kinds of entertainment and activities along the main roads.

Grand Opening of the Season 12 April: at the Pullman City Fun Park in 94535 Eging am See, Ruberting 30 (ca. 100 km / 62 miles SE of Regensburg).

This is the official Grand Opening! Watch the large parade on Saturday afternoon with all of the show teams, the board of management, the breweries, all supporters, all animals, and so on! Of course there will be an amazing show program to accompany this big event. Plus gold panning, horseback riding, cart and horses, bull riding, and especially for kids, a kiddies train. The Pullman City Fun Park offers a large variety of non-violent Western activities for the whole family: Western shows, Native American dances, magic shows, and much more; the whole show program is online - in English. Consumer Fair "Jura2000" 12-13 April: 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. both days, in 91171 Greding, on the fest site at the Hallenbad (ca. 55 km / 34 miles west of Hohenfels). Regional traders and businesses offer their goods and services at this fair, and invite you to have a stroll around to see the latest items on offer.

Street Market and Open Stores: Oster-Jahrmarkt 13 April: 8 a.m. - 6 p.m., in 92318 Neumarkt, on Volksfestplatz, Festplatz 1 (ca. 45 km / 28 miles west of Hohenfels). In the adjacent Kleine Jurahalle, you can find a high-quality artisans market. Stores in the town center will be open 1 - 5 p.m.

Artisans Market 13 April: 10 a.m.- 5 p.m., in 92318 Neumarkt, at the kleine Jurahalle, Festplatz 2 (ca. 45 km / 28 miles west of Hohenfels). Accompanies the street market on Volksfestplatz.

Silent Days 17 - 19 April: Please be aware that the three days before Easter Sunday are strict silent days: Holy Thursday (Gründonnerstag). | Good Friday (Karfreitag) - today, ALL music is prohibited in all public locations where drinks of any kind are served. | Holy Saturday (Karsamstag). Karfreitag = Good Friday = German holiday 18 April: All German stores and authorities off-post are closed, as are all on-post facilities (non-food) with a predominantly local national workforce.

Easter Family Special 20 - 21 April: at the Pullman City Fun Park in 94535 Eging am See, Ruberting 30 (ca. 100 km / 62 miles SE of Regensburg). On Sunday, there will be a large Easter egg hunt for children: THREE THOUSAND eggs are hidden in the fun park, all waiting to be found. In addition, there will be a big show program, to include an American History Show, a spectacular Western show, and a Magic Show with Doc Magic Guiseppe and Big Joe. A live band will play C&W on stage in the evening.

Today is Ostermontag = Easter Monday = German holiday 21 April: All German stores and authorities off-post are closed, as are all on-post facilities (non-food) with a predominantly local national workforce.

Tradition: Osterritt = Blessing of Horses for Easter 21 April: 9 a.m., in 92507 Nabburg (ca. 30 km / 19 miles south of Weiden). The horses will start at the Volksschule (German school) and ride to the pilgrimage chapel "Maria Brünnl".

Children's Day and Free Tours 21 April: at the Oberpfälzer Freilandmuseum (open-air museum) in Neusath 200 (part of 9257 Nabburg, ca. 31 km / 19 miles south of Weiden). Special activities for kids are offered this Easter Monday: your children can take part in various games, baking of typical Easter symbols, learn how to walk on stilts, go bowling "old-style", and much more. As you walk around the site, you will see quite a number of little lambs and goats on the pastures (no petting zoo).

If you speak German, you can also go along on one of the free guided tours that are offered every hour between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Beer Day - Tag des Bieres 23 April: in 96047 Bamberg, next to the Schloss Geyerswörth (mansion), Geyerswörthstraße 3. Bamberg has the highest density of beer breweries in all of Germany, nearly 100 in just this one city / county. Nine of these hiver organized this beer fest and will entertain the visitors all day long.

Street Market: Georgimarkt 25 April: midday - 5 p.m., in 82467 Garmisch-Partenkirchen, in the Partenkirchen subdivision.

Band Contest: "Rockabilly Rumble" 25 - 26 April: at the Pullman City Fun Park in 94535 Eging am See, Ruberting 30 (ca. 100 km / 62 miles SE of Regensburg). Rockabilly bands will compete for quite a prestigious prize, namely a record contract and regular

Funfair: Spring Volksfest 25 April - 4 May: in 92637 Weiden, at the new Festplatz on Conrad-Röntgen-Straße.

The booths and rides are open 2 p.m. - midnight, music will only play until 11 p.m. Family day with reduced fares is Wednesday afternoon. A big fireworks display will take place on Friday at around 10 p.m.

Classical Music in Weiden: Messa da Requiem by Giuseppe Verdi 10 May: Enoch zu Guttenberg, the Orchestra of the KlangVerwaltung Munich and the Neubeuern present the Verdi requiem at 8 p.m. in the Max-Reger-Halle in Weiden. This is a charity event. Proceeds of the concert go to environmental protection organizations in Northern Bavaria. Off-post movies in English Want to see a movie that’s not playing on post? Two movie theaters in Nuremberg play films in OV (original version), which for American movies, means in English. Trivia: Osterbrunnen (Easter Wells) In some parts of Germany it is customary to decorate the wells and fountains during Eastertide. Typically, evergreen branches, yellow and purple ribbons, and painted eggs are used in the lovely and sometimes very elaborate Easter wells.

Decorating the wells seems to have originally been done in conjunction with an annual spring-cleaning of the wells for health purposes. However, "Osterwasser" (Easter Water) drawn from the depths of the well was especially prized by the village girls for improving their complexions as well as protecting livestock from illness. Babies baptized with Osterwasser were said to become extremely intelligent.

There are countless Easter wells in Franconia and the Oberpfalz. The Amberg-Sulzbach county offers this interactive map - it's only in German but if you click on the city names, it provides you with the addresses of the fountains and some restaurants as well.

But there are also Easter wells in Marktredwitz, in Schönsee, in nearly every town in the Fränkische Schweiz (e.g.

Muggendorf, Streitberg, Ebermannstadt, Wellerstadt near Baiersdorf), .. the list goes on. You can see a comprehensive listing of all Osterbrunnen in the Fränkische Schweiz on this German page (all the names in italics) - with a map!

Alternatively, copy the respective city name and paste it into Google Maps or Bing Maps. Beneath the map, you'll find a list of Easter wells in the Fürth area (no map) and numerous photos.

In general, Easter Wells stay decorated from Good Friday (Karfreitag) until about two weeks after Easter.
