You have probably noticed that Christmas Markets have sprung up across Bavaria. While almost every little town has their own market, we’ve whittled the list to the most local, romantic and popular markets in this area. Click here for the rundown, or scroll to the bottom of the Newsletter.

Of special note: On Saturday, Grafenwoehr will have its Adventmarkt, 2-10 p.m. in the town square. Also, Vilseck’s Christmas market will be at Burg Dagestein this Saturday and Sunday, starting at 4:45 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. It will be a huge celebration and the mayor specifically wants to invite the American community here in Bavaria. Enjoy!

Christmas donations for sick kids For 6 years, the USAG Bavaria community has been donating presents to kids stricken with cancer. If you’d like to contribute this year, please donate toys, stuffed animals, candy, wrapping paper, etc for kids aged from babies to teenagers. The donations will be taken to the Cancer Clinic in Erlangen and Nurnberg, as well as to a shelter for children who come from abusive families on Christmas Eve. Winter driving safety tips * Be aware of FOG and always drive with your lights on. Use the right side lane markings if visibility is limited and drive with low beam headlights. * Watch for FARM EQUIPMENT on the roads during the harvesting season. * ANIMALS will more prevalent along roads as the seasons change. * CHILDREN will be on the streets and roads as they travel back and forth from school. Please be extra cautious in the early mornings and late afternoons. * It is not too early for BLACK ICE so be prepared and start preparing your car for the winter weather.

Recommended holiday mailing dates & extended hours These are the recommended 2013 holiday season mailing dates for postal customers assigned to the European theater.

10 Dec: First Class/Priority Mail 17 Dec: Priority Mail Express These dates are for mail originating in Europe and destined to locations in the United States. Mail originating in the U.S. and sent to European APO/FPO/DPO addresses use similar mailing dates.

All postal patrons should plan ahead and mail early to ensure letters, cards, and packages arrive in time for the holidays. Early mailing helps patrons avoid long lines at the post office and affords them an opportunity to use the least expensive SAM option.

Tree Lighting Ceremonies 5 Dec: Come join us for our annual Tree Lighting Ceremonies to ring in the holiday season. In Tower Barracks, the lighting will be on 3 Dec. at 5 p.m. in the PX overflow lot. In Rose Barracks, it will be on 5 Dec. in the PX parking lot at 5 p.m.

CFC-O has been extended Now-6 Dec: The 2013 Combined Federal Campaign-Overseas Europe (CFC-O) is starting again. CFC allows members of the community to donate to organizations and give to charitable organizations or give back to the community. Whether protecting the environment, honoring military veterans, advancing medical research, aiding refugees or providing job training to the homeless, the CFC-O has something for everyone. AWAG Volunteer Conference 7 Dec: The Americans Working Around the Globe Oberfalz region conference will be held in Hohenfels Germany on 7 Dec from 8:30-2:30 p.m. The conference promotes leadership development, volunteerism and fosters good relationships Americans and their local national neighbors. Ammunition Community Amnesty Day 14 Jan: If you know of ammunition or weapons that need to be turned in, drop them off at the next Ammunition Supply Point (ASP) #1 Community Amnesty Day for ammunition and explosives (A&E). From 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m., come to the Unit Entrance of Ammunition Supply Point #1. Simply approach the gate and let the ASP personnel know that you have amnesty to turn in. They will take it from you on a “No Questions Asked” policy.

Take a snapshot of the code with your phone, and the code automatically directs you to ICE.

Bavaria Community and Spouses' Club events Go to their Facebook page for upcoming events and club news. Over the summer the Grafenwoehr Community and Spouses Club (GCSC) disbanded and turned over its assets to the Vilseck Community and Spouses Club (VCSC). The Vilseck Community and Spouses Club is undergoing a name change and will now be the Bavaria Community and Spouses Club (BCSC) which will serve our entire community including Tower Barracks and Rose Barracks.

Singers wanted for choral group The Encores, a German-American Friendship Choir is looking for new members. Currently, the group is having fun singing Christmas Carols, but they also sing Gospel, pop-songs and even a little classical music throughout the year. All experience levels are welcome and language barriers are not a problem within the choir. The group meets every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., and rotates every month between Grafenwoehr (right outside Gate # 1) and Pressath. Hand Washing Awareness Week Now-7 Dec: This is Hand Washing Awareness Week. Please join us as we host "Clean Hands across Grafenwoehr," an evening of coloring, painting and hand washing activities to promote and educate the community on proper hand hygiene techniques to prevent illness. The event will take place at Tower Barracks Health clinic on Thursday, Dec 5, 5-7 p.m. Flu vaccines will also be available.

“Patchwork” – A Play for Children 6-8 Dec: Patchwork is a cleverly designed ensemble of old fashioned fables and contemporary foibles. Promising at the start to wiggle your giggle and tickle your noodle, the actors play 41 roles in 14 mini scenes. The performances on Dec. 6 & 7 are opening to everyone and begin at 7 p.m. The performance on Dec. 8 is a special EFMP performance, which starts at 2 p.m. EFMP Families attending the special performance must be registered with ACS. Reindeer Run 7 Dec: Dress in your most festive holiday attire and join us in this fun run! Along with a Jingle Bell Jog for kids under 6, a 1-mile Reindeer Romp and a 5K Fun Run/Walk, there will be winter drinks, treats, face painting and a special appearance

National Influenza Vaccination Week 9-13 Dec: This is National Influenza Vaccination Week. The clinic will be offering after-hours influenza (flu) vaccines on Wednesday, 11 Dec, 3-7 p.m. to all ID card holding medical beneficiaries and service members.

Picky Eating classes at WIC 10 Dec: The Tower Barracks WIC Overseas Program is currently offering monthly classes: How to work with your Picky Eater. During December, January and February, WIC’s register dietician will be teaching classes to parents of picky eater, ages 1-5. There’s no need to sign up, but feel free to let them know if you would like to attend. You do not have to be a WIC participant to attend. Military History Group Meeting 11 Dec: Survey your world through a series of Military History discussions. This month’s topic is the Crusades (The Fall of the Kingdom of Jerusalem/The Hattin Campaign, July 4, 1187.) There will be short presentations followed by discussions. Bavarian Ski Club trip All ski levels (and even snowboarders!) are welcome on trips.

The Bavarian Ski Club will be hitting the slopes for two trips in January: 17-20 Jan: Saalbach-Hinterglemm, MLK weekend. Cost is 370 euros and includes 3 nights accommodation at a 4star hotel with breakfast and dinner, a 3-day lift ticket and transportation to/from the Graf PX with sandwiches and beverages on the bus. 15 Dec: Regensburg Christmas Markets. Regensburg has three Christmas markets, but the most romantic one is Thurn & Taxis. Market hop, sip gluehwein and get cozy.

6 Jan: School resumes Child Find: What is child-find screening? Preschool Child Find is a developmental screening for children ages 3-5 identifying children with developmental delays or other special education needs. For children under age 3 please contact EDIS at 09662-83-3221.

What is the process? A Child Find team made up of the preschool special needs service provider, speech and language pathologists and the occupational therapist screen the children for developmental delays. These free screenings take place monthly.

How does it work? Parent submits the Child Find questionnaire (which they can pick up in the office or find on the school website); they are set up with an appointment for the screening. When they come in for the screening the child must first pass a vision and hearing screen by our school nurse. Then they are screened by the team. If the child is suspected of having any delays the team will refer them for further formal evaluation.

Why is it important? When learning challenges are identified at a young age, early intervention can help the child with learning tasks.

If parents are interested, what do they need to do? They can go to the school’s website and find the link for Child Find.

Under that link is a questionnaire they need to fill out and email back to the email address provided on the form. Someone will be in contact with them within 48 hours. If they do not hear back please contact the school at 09662 832812 and let them know what happened. This boys choir ranks among the best in Germany and will be accompanied by one of the best harp players, Silke Aichhorn. Tickets can be bought online (in EN) and prices depend on your seat. Best free parking lots (click for map): at "Auf der Wiesen", the car park behind the Hotel Arcadia and the Kurfürstenbad (indoor swimming pool); the other one is the park block opposite Sulzbacher Straße 5. Both parking areas are only a tiny walking distance from Amberg's city center.

Winter Solstice 21 Dec: Today is Winter Solstice, the longest night with the shortest day of the year. Look at this lovely animation to see how the Earth travels around the sun and how it is related to equinoxes and solstices.

Christmas in the Forest aka Waldweihnacht 21 Dec: 5 p.m., in Sorghof (part of 92249 Vilseck).This special event starts at the "Dorfplatz" (yard next to the Sorghof church) in the center of Sorghof (which is also where you park.) Then visitors and shepherds will walk 300 meters to the nearby forest in a torchlight procession, following the "Star of Bethlehem" which shows them the way. Here they will find a "Weihnachtskrippe" (manger), wooden booths with food and refreshments, and another bonfire. The live nativity scene is very unique because it's live with real animals and a real baby in the manger. When the procession has arrived, the actors will perform a musical about the search of St. Joseph and St. Mary for shelter. After about an hour, Christmas sparklers will be passed out (or bring your own) to the kids. At the wooden huts you will find various food and refreshments. All proceeds will go to local charity events. No entry fee!

Model Train and Toys Market 22 Dec: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., in 90469 Nürnberg-Gartenstadt, at the Gesellschaftshaus, Buchenschlag 1. Find new and used model trains, cars, accessories, literature, and many other things at this market (only GE). It is the largest model toy market of its kind in Franconia. You can sell here too, just contact the organizer at ph 0733-230-89989 (you'll probably need to speak German to them, get a German friend to help you out).

Waldweihnacht = Christmas in the Forest 22 Dec: 5 p.m., in 92253 Schnaittenbach, along the Buchberghuette road (ca. 27 km / 17 miles south of Grafenwöhr).

Christmas Eve in Germany 24 Dec: Christmas Eve is the day when Germans celebrate their Christmas. Stores will be extremely busy and close early, usually at 2 p.m., but check individual stores for opening hours. It is highly advisable to purchase everything you might need from a German store before today. In addition, all local nationals will be off that day which means that all onpost facilities (non-food) with a predominantly local national workforce will be closed. Today is also one of the "silent days" from 2 p.m. on where no public parties or similar are held.

Second Christmas Day 26 Dec: Second Christmas Day = German holiday. All German stores and authorities off-post are closed, as are all onpost facilities (non-food) with a predominantly local national workforce. Off-post gas stations will more than likely be closed. Please check locally for changed operating hours at your dining facilities, shopping facilities, gas stations, and access gates to the garrisons.

Closest free car parks are "Dultplatz" (Am Protzenweiher/ Oberpfalzbrücke); adjacent "Protzenweiher" (opposite Protzenweiher 27); neighbouring "Wöhrdstraße" (at Wöhrdstraße 18); and adjacent "Unterer Wöhrd" (Wöhrdstraße 60/62). There is also the "Donaumarkt" parking lot (Donaumarkt 1) which is "a walk across the bridge" closer than the "Wöhrdstraße" car park, but it's not free-of-charge, and it's blocked on Saturday mornings for the Regensburg produce market. From any of these car parks it's only a very short walk across one of the bridges. You can get a map of Regensburg's city center from the Tourist Info in the "Altes Rathaus" (old city hall) for free.

This Christmas market has a distinct medieval touch, with jugglers, musicians and buffoons. In addition, a fire show attracts all visitors every Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday: 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. Sunday: 11 a.m.-9 p.m.

Fürth Now - 23 Dec: in 90762 Fürth, 10 km / 6 miles west of Nürnberg, at the Fürther Freiheit. There are nearly 50 vendors and a live manger for the young and young at heart.

6 - 15 Dec: The "Altstadt-Weihnacht" in Fürth on Waagplatz is highly popular because of its authentic character and its exquisite arts and crafts goods. And the Christmassy magic continues with brass bands, choirs, illusionists and the night watchmen.

Santa Claus, the German Nikolaus and Knecht Ruprecht will visit at 4:30 p.m. and give little Christmas packages to the children. Great photo opportunity with the two Santas! A horse-drawn carriage will make its rounds around Graf from 2 p.m. on, and apart from a couple of rides, you can visit the nativity scenes on display in the Rathaus (city hall).

Guteneck Mansion 7 & 8 Dec. / 13 - 15 Dec. / 20 - 22 Dec: at Schloss Guteneck in Guteneck, near Nabburg, ca. 35 km / 21.5 miles south of Weiden, at Schlossberg 10. München Now - 23 Dec: 10:30 a.m. - 9 p.m. daily. "Christkindlmarkt am Sendlinger Tor" in 80336 Munich at the Sendlinger-Tor-Platz. The gate known as Sendlinger Tor is gently illuminated by the small but unique Christkindlmarkt, with over 40 stalls selling international goods: nativity scenes from Tyrol and Peru; elegant baubles with motifs of Austrian Empress Elisabeth (very popular in Germany) and Bavarian King Ludwig II; Indian crafts; and much more.

Now - 24 Dec: in 80331 Munich on Marienplatz. Check out their homepage in Deutsch and English. This is Munich's main Christmas market, and it is also the oldest in the city. A highlight every year is the "Himmelswerkstatt" (Santa's workshop) for children ages 6 to 12. And don't miss the huge exhibition of nativity scenes at the Richard-Strauss-Brunnen fountain just a few feet away from the Marienplatz. One of the most fascinating traditions is the "Krampuslauf". The dark, eerie companion of St. Nikolaus demands respect from the bad little kids, and warns them to behave better in the next year. Krampus will appear twice, on 9 & 23 Dec, between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. Great photo opportunity with the wild "Gesellen"! Now - 23 Dec: "Bogenhausener Weihnachtszauberwald" (only GE) in 81925 Munich on Rosenkavalierplatz. "Weihnachtszauberwald" translates as "magical Christmas forest” and refers to the 500 fir trees with thousands of lights that surround this market. Around 40 rustic wooden stalls are the temporary homes of vendors, artisans, and chefs who all have something interesting to offer. The culinary delights include a piglet from the grill, Glühweinbratwurst (Bratwurst made with or soaked in mulled wine), roast apples, Glühwein (mulled wine), Feuerzangenbowle (flaming wine punch, link in EN), and fruit punch.

There is also a different live performance every day at 5 p.m. Opening hours: 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. daily. On Christmas Eve, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Now - 24 Dec: "Schwabinger Weihnachtsmarkt" (EN + GE) in 80803 Munich at the Forum Münchner Freiheit. An unmistakable flair can be found here with the high level of artistic talent and craftsmanship. The Isartor gate is a romantic backdrop for the truly gigantic copper cauldron filled with 9,000 liters (ca. 2,380 gallons) of Feuerzangenbowle, an aromatic mixture of rum, red wine and sugar. The Feuerzangenbowle is very popular in Germany due to an old B&W film played repeatedly on TV. Opening hours: Mon. - Sun. 10 a.m. - 10 p.m.

Now - 1 Jan: The Largest Flaming Wine Punch in the World (only GE) in 90403 Nürnberg at the Fleischbrücke (bridge). The concept of the largest Feuerzangenbowle (flaming wine punch, link in EN) is in Nürnberg again this year. Over the years, a whole Feuerzangenbowlen village has been set up along the Pegnitz river. A truly gigantic copper cauldron filled with 9,000 liters (ca. 2,380 gallons) of Feuerzangenbowle, an aromatic mixture of rum, red wine and sugar, and six restaurateurs invite everyone to celebrate the this nostalgic fest. Opening hours: Daily between 29 Nov. and 30 Dec. 10 a.m. - 11 p.m. On Christmas Eve only 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. On Christmas Day and 26 Dec only 4 - 9 p.m.

Now - 23 Dec: Romantic Christmas Market at Schloss Thurn und Taxis (palace), 93047 Regensburg, Emmeramsplatz.

The romantic backdrop of St. Emmeram gives the "Romantischer Weihnachtsmarkt” at the Thurn und Taxis palace an incredible flair. Thousands of candles, torches and lanterns illuminate the impressive courtyard and almost lead you to believe that the cozy little huts are straight out of a fairy tale. Right in the middle, a huge Christmas tree oversees the busy little Christmas village.

Opening hours: Sun. - Wed. midday - 10 p.m., Thu. - Sat. midday - 11 p.m. Admission is 6 euros per person. Children, 6 – 16 years, are 2 euros. Groups of ten people receive one ticket for free (9+1).

Grand Opening on 29 Nov., at 5 p.m. on Marktplatz; Opening hours: Sun. - Thu. 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. Fri. and Sat. 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. Every year Rothenburg transforms into a winter wonderland. Experience the enchanting atmosphere at the "Reiterlesmarkt" Christmas market. This Market dates back to the 15th century and is one of the oldest in Germany. Its name refers to an old Teutonic legend. Before Christianity, the Teutons believed in a rider who would take care of a deceased person’s soul. While the Teutons were afraid of this mystic figure, people in the middle ages changed their attitude towards this rider, eagerly expecting him to appear because they saw him as a friendly messenger who brought gifts to all men on earth. A painting of this famous rider can be seen on the facade of the city hall. When the market opens or when the children of the town go on their candlelight procession, he comes alive again.

The Reiterlesmarkt (in English) is always held from last Friday in November to the day before Christmas Eve.

There will be a new highlight every day: visit by the Nürnberger Christkind, Nikolaus (the German Santa Claus), a "Rock Christmas" evening, horse-drawn carriages, special Stollen, and much more! Weiden's Christmas market has been held annually since 1576 and nowadays offers free entertainment at ca. 5 p.m. on the steps of the Altes Rathaus (historic city hall).
