Sparkling stars and artillery in Grafenwoehr Grafenwoehr, Germany -- It can be assumed that the training area has never before seen more stars on rank insignia. 40 generals, led by three-star general and USAREURCommanding General Lt. Gen. Christopher G. Cavoli, several colonels, other officers and NCOs inspected the exercise “Dynamic Front 18.”

Participating in the exercise, led by US Army Europe, were NATO artillery and support units, training joint, tactical fires support and checked their interoperability in a multi-national environment. 3,700 participants from 26 NATO- and other partner nations participated in the exercises. Dynamic Front was initiated to expand the capabilities of US and allied artillery units. One focus of the exercise was digital communication. For the first time, all members of the “Artillery Systems Cooperation Activities” (ASCA) participated in Dynamic Front. The ASCA software interface allows the individual nations to digitally connect their different field artillery and fires support systems. Currently, ASCA is used by France, Germany, Italy, Turkey and the USA. Germany was represented by Artillery Battalion 131from Weiden. Additionally, the exercise was supported by American combat helicopters.

USAREUR’s Deputy Commanding General, Major Gen. Timothy P McGuire emphasized the need to train together and praised the “increased quality” of the exercise and the team building of the NATO- and partner units. The multi-national military leaders attended briefings, visited the TOC of the observer and fires controllers and a firing position to see how their troops interacted. At the firing position near Vilseck, the Royal British Artillery showed the capabilities of their artillery gun L 118 and their howitzer AS 90. The visiting military officers came from Canada, Italy, Spain, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Sweden, Lithuania, Estonia, Norway and several other countries. Anne Hall, the US ambassador to Lithuania, was among the civilian guests. | by Gerald Morgenstern

Grafenwoehr, Germany -- In 1938, the once Royal-Bavarian training area was expanded. 58 villages, farms and hamlets were disbanded and 3,500 people had to leave their homes. 80 years ago, the Reich’s Resettlement Corporation (RUGES) was specifically established for that purpose and organized the resettlement with more or less pressure from the Third Reich. Today, only a few walls, cellars, foundation walls, well holes, the ruins of churches and chapels as well as old fruit trees bear witness of the once blossoming villages. Symbol of former homeland Hopfenohe was one of the oldest settlements in the area. St. Peter and Paul catholic church was located in the center of the village. In 1935, Father Johann Ritter, who was a very industrious priest, initiated an extensive renovation and extension of the church. However, the extension of the church did not prevent the displacement of the town by RUGES. In 2005, the church ruins, directly located at the European main watershed, were preserved. For that purpose, the U.S. Army allocated a significant amount of money. Today, the tower and the walls of Hopfenohe’s St. Peter and Paul church are THE symbol of all disbanded villages

3,500 people had to leave their homes.

Memories of Pappenberg Pappenberg was a busy village with a lot of church and social activities. Apart from fests and Pappenberg’s “Cuckoo kirwa,” its popular pilgrimage church “Maria Himmelfahrt” was the center of attention. Today, its ruins still dominate the old deserted village on the brink of the impact area. Its patrocinium will be celebrated on August 25, 2018 when auxiliary bishop Reinhard Pappenberger from Grafenwöhr visits the old village. From Netzaberg village to the town of Netzaberg Netzaberg hamlet, on the other hand, was revived and came to life again. The settlement with the restaurant “Zur Schönen Aussicht” (beautiful view) was located on the mountain of the same name. When additional troops were stationed in Grafenwoehr, the new U.S. housing area Netzaberg was built from 2006 to 2008 west of the old settlement. The new town features a village center with schools, kindergarten and a large church as well as 830 housing units. About 3,500 U.S. citizens have found a new “home away from home” there. Culture- and Military Museum The more than one-hundred year-long history of Grafenwoehr Training Area is documented with photos, movies, literature and exhibits in a permanent exhibition at the Culture - and Military Museum. Several events and tours organized by the museum are held to commemorate the resettlement that occurred 80 years ago. | by Gerald Morgenstern

Reservists perform like professionals German Army Reservists’ Band debuts in Grafenwoehr Grafenwoehr, Germany -- “The Reservists’ Band provides musical proof what reservists are capable of,” said Lt. Col. Florian Rommel, the German Army commander in Grafenwoehr after the charity concert at the city auditorium. The marches, symphonic pieces of music and the songs of Laura Ottilie Niebauer weren’t reservist quality. On the contrary: It was a concert of the highest quality.

Mayor Edgar Knobloch welcomed the musicians and the 250 people in the audience stating that military music has been a part of the garrison town for more than 100 years. USAREUR Band performances, serenades and tattoos were regular events. In 1928, 400 regimental musicians performed in Grafenwoehr. The mayor was happy to welcome 50 musicians, former members of the Army’s music corps as well as civilian Army employees and musicians, on stage for the charity concert. He presented the musicians with a city crest and a book about the training area. Retired Sgt. Maj. Christian Ziegler, the mayor of Fensterbach, conducts the band which was established in 2013. The majestic sound of “Fanfare Festive” by Michael Geisler opened the concert. Anton Lottner and Ziegler led through the concert in an informative and amusing way. Ziegler was happy to introduce a combination of Army, Air Force and Navy soldiers as well as civilians and charming ladies. An Italian member, said Ziegler, even adds an international touch to the band. During the first part of the concert, the band played “March of the trolls” by Edward Grieg, the trumpet solo “My Dream” by Peter Leitner, the “Celtic Flutes” with the soloists Silvia Prechtl-Seitz and Steffen Weber, the “Fehrbelliner Reitermarsch,” “Klezmer Classics” by Johann Meij and the “Mussinan March” by Carl Karl.

During the break, members of the Soldiers, Reservists and Camaraderie Association (SRK) and the Reservists’ Camaraderie Association Grafenwoehr provided food and beverages for the guests. The y also helped with set up and tear down. Cultural manager Birgit Plößner, also a musician, had contacted the band and organized the concert. The Andalusian sounds of “Alcazar” by Liano welcomed the audience after the break. Singer Laura Ottilie Niebauer from Teublitz, “the girl from the Oberpfalz” took the audience to Rio de Janeiro with the song “Girl from Ipanema.” It got jazzy when the singer performed George Gershwin’s “Summertime” and she showed her skills as an excellent performer of Yiddish music when she sang the swing song “Bei mir bist Du schön,” made famous by the Andrew Sisters. The wind section and the orchestra’s percussion section showed their skills when performing “The great Locomotive Chase” and “Bolero” by Maurice Ravel. The concert’s final highlight was “Stars and Stripes Forever” in honor of the American comrades. The U.S. Army was represented by Cmd. Sgt. Major Micheal Sutterfield and his spouse Kelly. | by Gerald Morgenstern

A Three-Star General is the first guest to sign the new “Golden Book”

Grafenwoehr, Germany -- The heading of Lt. Gen. Christopher G. Cavoli entry into the new Golden Book of the city of Grafenwoehr reads “in friendship.” Mayor Edgar Knobloch was excited to welcome the commanding general of US Army Europe (USAREUR) back at his old “home away from home.” Cavoli was stationed in Grafenwoehr as the commanding general of 7th Army Training Command (7ATC) from July 2014 to July 2016. He and his family were well-integrated and kept in touch with Grafenwoehr and the Knobloch Family after pcsing to Hawaii. In January, he got promoted to the rank of lieutenant general and assumed command of USAREUR, headquartered in Wiesbaden. As CG, USAREUR, he is also responsible for Grafenwoehr Training Area, the largest American Army installation in Europe. With the words “honor to whom honor is due,” Mayor Knobloch asked Cavoli to be the first guest to sign the new Golden Book of the city. The book will serve as the chronicle of important events, especially visits and guests for the next hundred years, said Knobloch. Cavoli said he felt very privileged. The three-star-general pointed out that he was signing the book on behalf of all American soldiers who served in Grafenwoehr over the past decades and enjoyed the friendly atmosphere in the Upper Palatinate town. Cavoli was accompanied on his short visit to the town hall by Brig. Gen. Antonio A. Aguto, the current commanding general of 7ATC. Aguto’s tour of duty in Grafenwoehr ends this summer and most likely, his PCS move will also involve a promotion. | by Gerald Morgenstern

How to avoid bringing back a disease from your vacation:

(djd). Digging in the sand with your kids, feeding goats on alpine pastures or riding a pedal boat on a lake - for many families, going on a vacation is the highlight of their year! To make sure you will come back from your vacation with nothing but pleasant memories, you should think about the right type of health protection for your entire family before leaving and check your vaccination records and travel first-aid kit. Even in popular travel destinations such as Spain, Greece, Austria, France and Italy, you can catch a disease.

present in Mediterranean countries and in Eastern Europe, you can even get immunized just a few days before going on vacation. Vacationers can catch diseases by the use of dirty drinking water or food, or close human contact. One of the most common infectious diseases world-wide is hepatitis B, which can be transferred through blood. Therefore, you should be careful with regard to small medical treatments or surgery in high-risk areas. Three immunization shots are required for a successful basic immunization against the hepatitis B virus.

Follow country-specific immunization recommendations "You should base your travel immunizations on the recommendations for Germany. Pneumococci, influenza, measles, tetanus, pertussis and polio, for example, can pose a risk when traveling,” says Prof. Dr. Tomas Jelinek from the Center of Travel Medicine (CRM) in Düsseldorf. "Additionally, there are country-specific immunization recommendations or regulations, for example against yellow fever, rabies, tick-born encephalitis (TBE) or meningococci." For a quick protection against the hepatitis A-virus that is

Seek medical advice early Rabies is a viral disease that is transferred from animals such as dogs, cats, monkeys and bats to humans. There is a risk for infection when traveling to Croatia, Austria and France. Animals in high-risk areas should neither be petted nor fed. Rabies is almost always fatal. Therefore, an active immunization is absolutely necessary. The TBE-virus is also wide-spread throughput Europe. Talk to your physician to determine which type of protection is recommended and makes sense for your travel destination. “A good time to seek medical advice from your physician is six weeks before traveling, or even earlier to ensure vaccinations can develop their full protection,” says Jelinek.

Warm weather causes ticks to return Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) continues to be on the rise in Germany and Europe

(djd). Finally, the warm season is about to start. People are excited about that and so are ticks whose bite often goes unnoticed but can transfer viruses such as that of Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). In 2017, several TBE cases were registered outside the known risk areas and in Germany, the highest number of infections within the last ten years was registered. Generally, infections are on the rise in Europe. Therefore, it makes sense to take precautionary measure, especially if you love spending time outdoors. A timely vaccination, recommended by Germany’s Permanent Vaccination Commission, provides the best protection against TBE. TBE progresses in two phases Normally, there is an incubation period of seven to fourteen days after the tick bite before disease symptoms develop. The disease often proceeds in two phases, starting with flu-like symptoms such as headache, joint pain, fatigue and a slightly increased temperature might be mistaken for a flu. In the second phase, the virus attacks the nervous system causing severe headaches, neck stiffness, vertigo, nausea and sensitivity to light. A high temperature with neurological signs of TBE such as encephalitis, inflammation of the spinal and the bone marrow, or an inflammation of the brain can occur. An affliction of the nervous system can result in severe health damage or, in the worst case, cause death. Approximately one to two of 100 patients die from the disease. Timely vaccination is the best protection against TBE Ticks preferably live in bushes and grassy areas where you catch them when walking by. The lowland forest tick, for example, actively approaches humans. Another tick variant has been imported from the Mediterranean and is also believed to transfer the TBE virus. The bite of an infected tick transfers the TBE virus. This sets it apart from other tick-borne illnesses. After spending time outdoors, you should check your body for ticks. However, the removal of a tick that is already sucking your blood, does not protect you from TBE. Therefore, a vaccination is recommended, especially for those people living in high-risk areas or spending a lot of time outdoors. Three vaccinations within a few months provide immunization protection. The first booster vaccination must be done after three years. There is a special vaccine for kids which has been approved for kids, ages one year and older. Spontaneous travelers can achieve immunization within a few weeks. 11 | Bavarian Times

Ticks also love the warm season. They become active when temperatures reach five degrees Celsius and start looking for a suitable host.

Goodbye jetlag Start your long-distance travels relaxed and well-rested Traveling through multiple time zones can have a negative affect on our body clock. Frequent fliers are especially affected.

(djd). Snorkeling on Hawaii, hiking in the Andes and safaris in Africa - today, air travel to all corners of the world is a normality. Some people, however, do not only travel to far away place while on vacation, they also go on long-distance business trips. And if there is one thing, business people can do without, it is jetlag. When traveling through multiple time zones, however, it can hardly be avoided. Light conditions at the travel destination often signal another time of day than usual and causes our body clock to skip a beat. Affected individuals experience fatigue, reduced productivity and insomnia. Interesting fact: Just like the change to daylight savings time is more difficult for most people, so is the jetlag when flying east. Here, it is recommended to go to bed earlier before taking the trip. A healthy sleep requires peace of mind If you are planning a trip west, however, you can start going to bed a few hours later in the days prior to the trip. At the travel destination, travelers should quickly adapt themselves to the local sleep-wake cycle and stay outside during the day. This helps the body to adapt more easily to the new time zone. Apart from common measures such as quiet surroundings, soft music or ear plugs, an eye mask can guarantee the necessary darkness.

Take it easy when arriving at your destination Individuals who have a tendency to suffer from jetlag, should avoid physical stress before the not engage in physical activities until the worst discomforts are over. Physicians also recommend to abstain from drinking alcohol, coffee or adrenalizing teas while your sleep-wake cycle is disrupted. If you can’t get any rest during a night flight, you should plan for short day naps on your first vacation days or days back home.

Extra tips for frequent fliers • You should pick your food based upon your travel destination: Tiring carbohydrates going west and vitalizing proteins going east. • Book your flight so that you will arrive at your travel destination in the afternoon, i.e. in sync with your body clock. That will definitely make it easier to go to bed. • Schedule business appointments smartly: In the east in the evening; in the west in the morning.

A 24-hour plan against heartburn Tips from experts for a day free of symptoms Start into a stomach-friendly day by taking out time for a light breakfast.

Eat lightly, breathe deeply Start your day by taking out time for breakfast and enjoying it without checking your smartphone or reading the newspaper. Ideal is a healthy cereal. If you need caffeine to wake up, drink green tea instead of coffee. When getting dressed, make sure nothing pinches or squeezes your abdomen. That way, you can start well-prepared into your morning appointments. Sometimes it isn’t easy to accomplish everything that is on your to-do list. Do not let that stress you, if you suffer from heartburn. Whether in the office , when shopping or on your way to the child care center – breathe deeply five times. That signals your body to relax and decreases your stress level. Between noon and 2 p.m. it is time to take a lunch break. It is time to recharge your batteries with a light meal such as fish with vegetables or salad with turkey strips. Make sure your food is not heavily spiced or greasy because that stimulates the production of gastric acid which you must avoid. Another no-go is working while eating because it causes unnecessary stress. Should your stomach react with reflux anyway, an antacid can help and ligate excess acid. During a busy afternoon, you can support your stomach by taking small breaks, eating a few almonds or drinking a large glass of water. A stomach-friendly evening Start into your after-work hours with exercise. It doesn’t matter which type of exercise you choose as long as you are having fun. Quench your thirst with non-carbonated water because car13 | Bavarian Times

bonic acid can cause burping. An agreeable vegetable soup or another light meal is perfect for dinner. Stop eating two to three hours before going to bed. If you suffer from nightly heartburn, it is helpful to sleep with your upper body elevated to prevent reflux of the gastric acid and to ensure you wake up well-rested and ready to start into a new day.

Often underestimated by bikers: Headphones and cell phones Devices reduce concentration and ability to react

Listening to music is enjoyable but can be dangerous if it distracts you from things that are more important.

(dmd). It may be entertaining but it is very dangerous: If you are dealing with your headphones or cell phones while riding your bike, you take a great security risk. However, this does not stop mainly young bikers.

Both devices pose an extremely high risk. The sound of music drowns out all traffic noises which are very important for bikers. The same applies to using a smartphone without a hands-free kit. When riding a bike, both hands should be on the handlebar at all times to be able to react quickly and appropriately. Needless to say that won’t work if you are typing a text message with one of your hands. Phone: 09641 - 22 04 Fax: 09641 - 34 32

Traffic laws are strict. Bikers operating a smartphone without a hands-free kit while biking will be fined 55 Euro. If you are operating a vehicle while using a device that impairs your ability to hear, the fine is 15 Euro. And if you get into an accident, you risk your insurance coverage. Bottom line: Hands off your cell phone and better listen to music at home. Bavarian Times | 14

Almost every tenth student in Germany is riding his bike wearing headphones or earbuds. This is the result of a study Germany’s automobile club ADAC conducted in several German cities. For the study, 7,300 bikers were observed with a focus on students. Nearly 700 of them were wearing headphones and about 160 were using their smartphone while biking.

(djd). Curb damages and corrosion on alloy rims, dents in the paint, small damages in the interior: Drivers often experience small mishaps that can lead to a loss of value, stress and high costs. Nowadays, nearly every second new car in Germany is leased - a convenient and often cheap way of driving a good and chic vehicle. At first because it can be costly in the end if you do not return the vehicle as agreed upon in the contract. Small scratches and damages can quickly cost thousands of Euro. Therefore, it is worth consulting a smart repair specialist. He uses special techniques to repair small damages. This saves money and stress with your leasing partner. It is also worth considering before selling your used car. A2017 survey indicated that appearances and design ranks number three in the sale criteria chart.

Worn car seats can be professionally repaired as well.

How to repair scratches, dents or stains cost-efficiently A bumper is quickly damaged. Even mall bumps can cause scratches, dents and cracks. Often, these damages aren’t repaired in car repair shops in favor of a new bumper that costs 500 Euro and more. Exchanging a worn leather seat or an alloy rim can cost up to 2,000 Euro. Innovative smart repair methods and systems professionally repair small damages and the bill is up to 80 percent cheaper. But be careful: Not all shops that offer smart repair do a good job as was recently shown by an ADAC survey. Fixing alloy rims Curb damages and corrosion on alloy rims are extremely annoying because they will always be replaced with expensive original rims when returning the car. A cost-effective alternative is repairing small damages professionally in a garage that works with the TÜV-certified WheelDoctor system. Even diamond cut wheel sets can be repaired. Cost per rim is about 250 Euro. That’s a saving of up to 1.500 Euro per rim.

cars & Traffic There is no room for compromises when it comes to safety. That also applies to used bikes. Tires, for example, should be in good condition and renewed, if necessary.

Safe biking What motorbike novices should know

Used but safe Used, however, does not mean making compromises when it comes to safety. Brakes, lights, tires should be in excellent shape when buying a pre-owned bike, or at least repaired before going on your first ride. "It can be financially attractive to bargain and reduce the price of a used bike to be able to invest the money you saved into new parts, a premium helmet and good leathers," says motorbike expert Oliver Pflaum of MotorradreifenDirekt.de. Many bikers like working on their bikes or know someone who does. That way, older bikes can be restored. Sufficient thread guarantees a good grip Never make any compromises hen it comes to the tires! German traffic law requires a minimum thread depth of 1.6 millimeters. However, it is better to not run down your tires to that limit. Novice riders should always invest in new tires. Additionally, regularly checking the tire pressure and checking the tires for damages is as important as the right thread depth. Apart from that, novice drivers should take it easy, avoid over-estimating themselves and change down gears when going through curves. Man novice bikers overestimate their skills and physical limits. Go slowly and arrive safely at your destination. It is recommended to continuously increase your top speed, speed in curves and length of your day trips. Novice bikers should also

keep in mind that new tires should be broken in slowly over the first 100 kilometers. Bikers should never forget the saying: “Practice makes perfect!”

Short check list for buying a motorbike (djd). When buying a used bike, check the following items: • Are the tires in good condition (sufficient thread, no obvious damages)? • Are brakes, front lights, brake lights and turning signals working perfectly? • Are there visible signs of an accident? Look for scratches on the handlebars. • Are parts original parts? If not, are changes recorded in the registration papers? • Is the bike loosing fluid(s)? • Is there visible rust? • Are the Bowden cables easy to operate? • Is the motorbike chain tight and can it be pulled backwards?

(djd). For most novice bikers, the first bike is more than just a bike, it is a dream come true. Regardless whether a biker buys his first bike at age 20 or 50, it I an unforgettable experience nevertheless. However, no matter how old you are, novice bikers should not overdo it: Beginners should start with a bike with average performance to get some driving experience. A used bike is a good option. Small scratches and similar issues are not as dramatic as they would be with new bike that would then quickly deteriorate in value.

The All-New 2019 BMW X4. The eye-catching athlete

Vehicle concept and design Its predecessor – the first ever Sports Activity Coupe at the premium end of the mid-size segment– broke new ground. Today, the all-new BMW X4 is writing the next chapter in this story of success. More than 200,000 units of the first-generation X4 have been sold worldwide and 19,712 in the US alone since the original model was launched in 2014. The all-new BMW X4 underscores its individual character with significantly enhanced driv17 | Bavarian Times

ing dynamics, standout exterior design accentuating the car’s sporting instincts, a refined premium ambience in the interior, state-of-the-art driver assistance systems and leading-edge connectivity technologies. Additionally, the dynamic and extravagant aura of the Sports Activity Coupe is highlighted by the BMW M Performance model: the all-new BMW X4 M40i. The exterior design of the all-new BMW X4 features clean surfacing and high-class, modern accents. The BMW X4 assumes the role of eye-catching athlete in the BMW X model family. “The second-generation BMW X4 brings together a distinctive, dynamic silhouette with a clear, pared-back use of forms,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. Dynamically stretched proportions, powerful styling An increase of approximately 3 inches in exterior length to 187.5 inches, 2.1 inches added to the wheelbase (now 112.7 inches), an extra 1.4 inches of width (75 inches) and an approximately 0.1 inch drop in height (to 63.8 inches) give to the all-new BMW X4’s dynamically stretched proportions. Short overhangs and powerfully formed, subtly hexagonal wheel arches emphasize the nearly perfectly balanced 50:50 distribution of weight between the front and rear axle. In the center of the striking front end stands a large BMW kidney grille in a new three-dimensional look. Twin headlight units with dynamic contours and horizontal fog lamps integrated into the outer air intakes form a new interpretation of the familiar six-eyed face embraced by BMW X models. The second generation BMW X4 is making its debut as the BMW X4 M40i and the BMW X4 xDrive30i. The 2019 BMW X4 with sportier proportions, with wider tracks, the latest generation suspension settings, a lower center of gravity and improved aerodynamics. The second generation Sports Activity Coupe offers a wide array of new standard safety features such as Active Protection which initiates protective measures when an accident situation is imminent such as belt tensioning and the closing of windows and moonroof to a small gap. Additionally, the standard Active Guard includes Frontal Collision Warning, City Collision Mitigation with Braking, Pedestrian Warning with City Braking, and Speed Limit Information. Standard Navigation comes with a large 10.25 inch display and offers drivers multiple ways to interact including touchscreen, iDrive Touch Controller, as well as a cloud powered intelligent voice control, the optional 75 percent larger, color Head-Up Display provides drivers the option of viewing navigation directions just under the direct line of vision. Not only does the all-new BMW X4 appear sportier, provide new and improved driving dynamics, better aerodynamics and safety features, passengers can now enjoy a larger panoramic moonroof and a 3-Zone Climate Control system which allows for greater ride comfort. The all-new 2019 BMW X4 will be available at certified BMW Centers in July 2018 with pricing starting at $50,450 for 30i, and $60,450 for M40i plus $995 Destination and Handling.

the character line between the wheel arches break up the surfaces of the car’s flanks. This creates clearly defined lines which are additionally emphasized by the drawn-in glasshouse at the rear. The coupe style roofline slides into the rear window with an elegant flourish before dipping down more steeply to the rear. The window design also underline the dynamic proportions of the all-new BMW X4, thanks to a smoothly rising sill line and an elongated take on the Hofmeister kink “counter-swing” at the base of the C-pillars. Clearly structured surfaces and horizontal lines shape the car’s tail. The LED rear lights, with their three-dimensional shaping, are slim in design and positioned at the extreme edges of the rear. Combined with the twin exhaust tailpipes (shared by all engine variants), they magnify the width of the rear end.

Interior and equipment. Sporting character with a modern, premium feel The interior cabin of the all-new BMW X4 is roomier with a premium feel. All controls are clearly arranged and set within trim finishers featuring a distinctly pared-down design. The low instrument panel and the slightly raised seating position typical of BMW X models afford drivers a superb view of the road ahead. The driver-focused layout of the cockpit helps to create a wonderfully sporty driving experience at all times. Redesigned sports seats with boldly contoured side bolsters provide outstanding lateral support even in extreme handling situations. Top-class materials, precise build quality and a host of meticulously crafted details set the tone for the modern and individual premium character of the all-new BMW X4. The surfaces of the instrument panel and door paneling merge smoothly into one another, while the X logos embossed into the electroplated surfaces of the front and rear doors are eye-catching details. The ambient lighting, adding extra light sources around the center console and instrument panel, in the door paneling and in the foot wells, enhances the sense of wellbeing in the interior of the all-new BMW X4. The lighting mood can be adjusted as the driver pleases thanks to a choice of six colors. Large storage trays, roomy door pockets, cup holders and various compartments are all testimony to the functional qualities of the all-new BMW X4. Reduced weight, enhanced aerodynamic properties An intelligent material mix has made it possible to bring about a substantial weight saving, not just in the chassis design but also in the body’s construction. BMW EfficientLightweight measures led to the increase in the proportion of aluminum as well as highstrength and ultra-high-strength grades of steel. This has made the body structure more solid than ever, serving up benefits for both vehicle agility and occupant protection. Additionally, the car has a significantly lower center of gravity which enhances the Sports Activity Coupe’s cornering dynamics.

extra-large brake discs and blue painted calipers. Also standard is the Adaptive M Suspension featuring electronically controlled dampers whose responses adjust to the nature of the road and driving style. Drivers can choose between a sportier or more comfortable basic setting by activating the relevant performance maps using the Driving Experience Control switch. The standard M sports exhaust system produces unmistakable sound while the M Sport differential serves up wonderfully dynamic cornering. The flap-controlled M sports exhaust system on the BMW M Performance models doesn’t just make a great impression acoustically, though – its trapezoidal tailpipes in black chrome form a stunning visual highlight. Power is relayed to the wheels via an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission including Launch Control function as standard. The sporty nature of the BMW M Performance model is enhanced by the rear biased set-up of the BMW xDrive all-wheel drive and the Performance Control function. The optional M Sport differential generates a precise locking effect at the rear wheels, priming the car perfectly to power out of corners with dynamic drive. The BMW X4 M40i comes equipped as standard with M Sport brakes and 19-inch light-alloy wheels; variable sport steering and M Sport suspension with firmer spring and damper tuning. The M Sport brakes are specially designed with an extra-large master cylinder to help optimize braking feel. Customers can also opt for the Adaptive M suspension, which is exclusively available for the two BMW M Performance models and further broadens the range of adjustment between sporty handling and well-balanced ride comfort. Two 19-inch wheels with either performance run-flat tires or all-season run-flat tires are available. Sporting a Doublespoke M twinspoke design in bi-color Orbit Grey polished finish, they add a striking visual touch. The options list also includes two 20-inch light-alloy wheels, and one 21-inch M Double-spoke Cerium Gray wheel. Connectivity enhances safety, comfort and infotainment. The standard built-in SIM card also allows drivers of the all-new BMW X4 to use Intelligent Emergency Call with automatic locating and accident severity detection. With the new BMW Teleservice Accident Assistance, the vehicle now detects low-speed collisions below the threshold for airbag deployment. The driver receives a message in the iDrive display offering to contact the BMW Accident Assistance service directly. A push of a button is all it takes to obtain professional support from the BMW Accident Assistance team, who can also put the customer in touch with a BMW Service Partner if necessary.

Another factor in the dynamism and efficiency of the all-new BMW X4 is a reduction in aerodynamic drag of around 10 percent. This advance has been achieved by streamlining the body at the same time as incorporating a raft of additional measures, including active air flap control, the Air Curtains in the front apron and additional underbody cladding. The all-new BMW X4 sets a new benchmark in its segment with a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.30. The BMW M Performance model. Featuring model specific design and equipment features, the inline six cylinder engine is supported by chassis technology that has been precisely tuned to handle the high drive power. In the US, the BMW X4 M40i variant comes standard with M Sport brakes, which allow drivers to enjoy exceptionally dynamic handling with phenomenal stopping power. Best Cars for families 2018

2018 Audi Q5 and A6 named "2018 Best Cars for Families" in their classes by U.S. News & World Report The 2018 Audi Q5 and 2018 Audi A6 have been named "2018 Best Cars for Families" in their classes by U.S. News & World Report. Audi received the awards at the New York International Auto Show.

The annual U.S. News & World Report “Best Cars for Families” awards are determined by a combination of professional automotive reviews, safety and reliability ratings, seating and cargo volume and the availability of family-friendly features, such as in-car wireless internet and surround-view cameras. This year, 127 new cars from the 2018 model year were evaluated by U.S. News & World Report editors, with winners determined in 11 automotive classes. Audi tied for most awards won by an individual brand. According to U.S. News & World Report, "The Audi Q5, the Best Luxury Midsize SUV for Families, and the Audi A6, the Best Luxury Midsize Car for Families respectively, both won in large part because their backseats are larger than the competition. That extra space makes it easier to install car seats, keep kids in boosters from kicking the front seats and gives teens or older relatives plenty of space to stretch out." The release also noted that the Q5 and A6 have plenty of available driver assistance features, including automatic braking, surround-view cameras and lane keeping assist. 2018 Q5 This is the third year the Q5 has been awarded “Best Luxury Compact SUV” by U.S. News & World Report, with editors prais-

ing the vehicle’s crash test scores, active safety features, standard quattro® all-wheel drive and infotainment features like Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ compatibility. Setting a new standard for the luxury SUV segment, the Q5 offers the sporty performance of a sedan with the versatility of an SUV, featuring standard quattro® with ultra® technology and space for up to five passengers. 2018 A6 The A6 offers attractive exterior design with S line® elements and a Singleframe® grille, along with LED daytime running lights and taillights. In addition to the 2.0T FWD and 2.0T quattro® variants, new for 2018, the A6 is offered with a revised 3.0-liter TFSI® V6 engine and quattro® all-wheel drive. Interior styling of the A6 includes a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel with shift paddles, an expansive wraparound dash with infotainment display, eight-way power front comfort seats and room for up to five passengers. Both the Q5 and A6 offer a suite of standard and available driver assistance systems designed to help drivers navigate the road with confidence. Standard Audi pre sense® basic and city can help prepare the vehicle for impact in the case of an impending collision. Available Audi pre sense® rear helps monitor the traffic following the vehicle and takes similar actions to Audi pre sense basic, while Audi side assist provides blind spot monitoring through LED indicators on the exterior side mirrors. The 2018 Ford F-150’s first 3.0-liter Power Stroke® diesel engine officially boasts EPA-estimated ratings of 30 mpg highway, 22 mpg city and 25 mpg combined. These are the highest EPA-estimated ratings available in a full-size pickup truck. These benchmark figures are the result of more than a decade of work developing a lightweight high-strength, military-grade, aluminum-alloy body, a 10-speed SelectShift® transmission, and robust engine construction of aluminum and compacted graphite iron to deliver durability, reduced weight and stumppulling torque.

“Even a few years ago, customers wouldn’t have imagined an EPA-estimated rating of 30 mpg highway would be possible in a full-size pickup, but our team of crazy-smart engineers rose to the challenge,” said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford executive vice president, product development and purchasing. In addition to its leading fuel economy ratings, the all-new F-150 Power Stroke boasts best-in-class* diesel power – 250 horsepower and a stout 440 lb.-ft. of torque – greater torque than a 2019 Ram 1500 Hemi V8. The LX comes standard with Stinger-inspired LED daytime running lights, a new 16-inch alloy wheel design and matte gray-finish grill. The EX boasts the turbocharged 178-horsepower engine with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission with an adaptive Smart Shift drive mode. It also adds new leather seating surfaces with front seat heaters. A new 17-inch alloy wheel design and Smart Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go1 are standard. Similar to the S, the EX is equipped with standard fog lamps, LED taillights and dual exhaust. Available options include new ambient multicolor interior lighting, and a heated steering wheel. Redesigned 18-inch wheels are standard on the SX and the SX Limited (SXL) package is available with Michelin 235/45R-18 tires. New LED fog lights, ambient interior lighting, sport steering wheel and Smart Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go functionality are standard on both SX and SXL variants. The SX features available European-styled red and black two-tone sport leather-trimmed seats, panoramic roof, a Harman Kardon®3 premium audio system with UVO link with Navigation, heated steering wheel, gloss black door pillars and side moldings, and a sport bumper with LED fog lamps. The SXL is available with a striking new two-tone bronze and black interior with Nappa leather seating surfaces.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) Offered as standard equipment across the Optima lineup are a number of ADAS1 features, a suite of technologies designed to work in concert to potentially lessen the severity of a collision or avoid it entirely. Under certain driving conditions, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA)1 can automatically apply the brakes to reduce speed, which may minimize the effects of a frontal collision. The Forward Collision Warning System (FCW)1 is designed to detect a potential collision with a vehicle it senses in front of the Optima and provides an audible warning and visual displays to alert the driver. Driver Attention Warning (DAW)4 monitors the driver and will provide visual and audible alerts if it senses the attention level has been significantly reduced. Lane Keep Assist (LKA)1 may apply corrective steering if it senses the vehicle drifting outside the intended lane, while the Lane Departure Warning (LDW)1 monitors the position of the Optima within its lane and warns the driver if it detects that the vehicle is deviating or about to deviate from the intended lane. UVO Telematics and Infotainment Since its introduction in 2013, Kia’s UVO telematics and infotainment system has made it easier than ever for owners to interact with their Kia vehicles and also stay connected. With ever-increasing functionality and in-vehicle entertainment options, KMA is restructuring UVO into an easy-to-understand tiered system and the 2019 Optima is the first Kia to launch with this approach. UVO play is standard on the LX. Featuring Apple CarPlay®5 and Android Auto™6 capability, UVO play tethers the user’s compatible smartphone to the Optima’s audio system through a USB cable7. Via voice recognition8, drivers may use their compatible Apple9 or Android10 smartphones for navigation, to make calls, send and receive messages, and listen to music all in a way that allows the driver to stay more focused on driving. UVO link11, available as standard equipment on S, and EX models, offers an extended suite of connected-car security and convenience features. UVO link includes Apple CarPlay5 and Android Auto6 support and adds features such as on-demand diagnostics12, maintenance alerts, vehicle alarm notifications, geo fencing and speed alerts. Similar to the K900 luxury sedan, convenience features such as remote start with HVAC control13, remote lock/unlocking, and remote activation of the horn and lights are all included in UVO link. The top-tier UVO link with Navigation is offered optionally on the EX with Premium Package and standard on the SX and SXL. Standard with all the features in UVO play and UVO link, UVO link with Navigation adds MY POIs and Map Care, which allows for two free map updates per year14. (Kia Motors USA) Bavarian Times | 24

Outlet malls and outlet sales in the region and in Germany

Adidas Outlet-Center Herzogenaurach, the center is located near Nuremberg.

Lovely decorated villages with pinnacles and towers on red-tiled roofs and large, colorful, neon logos of famous designers on the outside: Outlet malls such as Wertheim Village serve only one purpose - designer brands such as Adidas, Levis and Escada present their dresses, suits and shoes from the previous collection marked down by 30 to 70 percent. Welcome to discount paradise. The concept of building outlet malls that look like small villages has reached Germany. Ten years ago, there were only three outlet malls, now there are ten. However, with only ten outlet malls, Germany is far from being in the lead in Europe. Based upon its population, Germany is on the same level as Poland.

The photo shows the communal brewery in Windischeschenbach where the traditional Zoigl beer is brewed.

Windischeschenbach, Germany -- Discover and enjoy almost 600 years of brewing tradition! Zoigl lovers come from all over Germany and meanwhile even from England, the United States and Siberia to experience the unique Zoigl atmosphere. Zoigl is brewed in communal breweries in Eslarn, Falkenberg, Mitterteich and the Zoigl capital Windischeschenbach and its sub community Neuhaus by licensed brewers. Neuhaus, for example, has owned the right to brew Zoigl since 1415. The right belongs to the house and the property.

seurs. In the past, it was stored in a fermentation cellar, today mostly in tanks made of stainless steel.

Zoigl is a low-fermented, unfiltered beer that only contains the carbon dioxide that develops in the brewing process. It is still brewed with wood firing. The characteristics of the "real Zoigl from the communal brewer" are: • Beer brewed in a jointly operated communal brewery • Regularly served by the brewer in the town where it was brewed • Uniform beer price in the local community • Fermentation, maturation and storage in the bar • Served freshly from the tap or the barrel

The "Half Zoigl" (that is 0.5 liters) starting at € 1.60, hearty home-made snacks, no possibility to make reservations instead sharing a table with others until the last place is taken, music by musicians that happen to be there, being on a first-name basis -- these are the characteristics that turn a visit to a rustic Zoigl parlor into an experience.

In accordance with the Bavarian purity law, only the best hops, malt, water and yeast are used. Therefore, Zoigl is also a wonder of nature for connois-

A hectagonal star (the sign of the brewers‘ guild)), hanging on the gabel of the house, indicates that Zoigl is being served there. What is the significance of the Zoigl star? The hectagonal Zoigl star is made from two interconnected equilateral triangles. It symbolizes the three elements of brewing: Fire, water and air as well as the well-known ingredients water, malt and hops.

The "real Zoigl from the communal brewer" was the only specialty of the entire Upper Palatinate Forest that was awarded a crown at the first specialty competition of Nuremberg metropolitan region! | by Editor Bavarian Times | 30

Bavarian traditions: What is the “Kirchweih” in the Oberpfalz region?

Kirwaburschn and Kirwamoila (Kirwa boy and Kirwa girl) Boy and girl are unmarried young men and women who appear as a couple for the duration of the Kirwa. Kirwa girls were a self-made wreath in their hair, the Kirwa boys wear their hat decorated with flowers that were given to them by a girl. Kirwabaum (Kirwa tree) Every Kirwa needs a Kirwa tree. The young boys cut a large tree in the forest, the girls decorate the trunk and the treetop with ribbons. The tree is the answer to the question: “Who celebrates Kirwa?” In the afternoon, the Kirwa boys put up the tree, traditionally without the help of any machines. They use long wooden sticks, tied together with ropes at the top, known as swallows or Goisn. Baum austanzen (Dance around the tree) On stage, Kirwa boys and Kirwa girls dance traditionally dances around the tree. During those dances, the head couple is identified. An alarm clock rings during the decisive dance and the couple with the flowers will be the head couple for one year. Kirwa eingraben (Bury the Kirwa) Every Kirwa ends. On the last day, the Kirwa boys sing sad songs and “bury” the Kirwa until it is dug out again the following year. Küchl (a pastry) Küchl are a yeast-raised pastry that used to be baked only during Kirwa. The round pastries have a thick edge and thin inside and are baked while swimming in grease. They are covered with powdered sugar. Kirwaliesl Stone beer mug with lid. Kirwabär (Kirwa bear) A raucous looking figure that is chased through town on Kirwa Monday. Most of the time, it’s the Kirwa boy that likes to drink most. Musicians and kids accompany the Kirwabär. The wranglers smear passersby with smut. While marching though town, the group stops at several guesthouses.

The third Sunday in October was designated as Kirchweih day in 1866. It replaced the traditional village fair and was designed to control the amount of fests celebrated in the various towns and villages. The residents of the Oberpfalz and Franconia refused to obey that order. Instead, they continued to celebrate Kirchweih on their communities’ traditional dates but added the third Sunday in October on their calendars as yet another day to have another fest. As a result, Amberg-Sulzbach County, for example, celebrates more than 120 Kirchweih fests from April through November, including a dance around the Kirwa tree. For most village residents, Kirchweih is the most important fest of the year. Kirchweih traditions differ from region to region. Most of the time, Kirchweih already starts on Thursday or Friday with the “excavation of the Kirwa” and ends on Monday with the “Kirchweih burial.” In the evenings, a traditional Kirchweih meal is served in the local guest houses, often there is music and dance. But it’s not just folk or traditional music that is played on the Kirchweih fests. ‘Often, there a special dancing parties for young adults where rock and pop music is played. The Kirwa tree is a fixture at every traditional Kirchweih. Often, it remains up until October. The tree is put up in the town’s central square in the afternoon of Kirchweih Saturday by the towns’ young men. It should have a length of about 30 meters and is donated by one of the local forest owners. In the morning, the tree is cut and afterwards, the Kirwa boys transport it into town with a tractor and trailer, singing. Before it is put up, which is not all that easy, it is decorated with ribbons, carvings and wreaths. The Kirchweih dance takes place on Sunday. The Kirchweih couples dance around the tree, singing and dancing. One couple carries a bouquet of flowers which is passed on to another couple after each dance around the tree. After a while, an alarm clock rings. The couple carrying the bouquet of flowers at that times, is promoted to head couple (“Oberkirchweihpaar” or “Oberkirwapaar”). A beer mug for the boy and a shawl for the girl, or something similar, are hanging on a crossbar up in the tree. They have to be taken down by the boy with the help of a ladder. Needless to say, the other Kirwa boys will try to make it difficult for him! Over the past years, Kirchweih clubs have formed in many villages to plan and put together the entire Kirchweih. In many towns, it is the youth that is keeping the Kirwa tradition alive. | by Editor

The German word “Kichweih,” or Bavarian “Kirwa,” means church consecration. In Bavaria, this fest is celebrated in most communities on the third Sunday in October. However, this is not the case in the Oberpfalz region and in Franconia. Here, Kirchweih is celebrated on the actual day on which the respective church was consecrated, or on the name day of the church’s saint.

Experience Bavarian traditions The largest regional fests in May and June

What would Bavaria be without its fests? Whether it’s the large beer fests in Upper and Lower Bavaria or the wine fests in Franconia, fests are a permanent part of Bavarian tradition. Almost every town hosts a fest once a year and celebrates in the genuine Bavarian way. Following is a small selection of beautiful fests in Bavaria.

Regensburg May- and Fall Dult The Regensburg May and Fall Dult is an inherent part of Regensburg’s event calendar. Twice a year, you can enjoy a smaller and more comfortable version of the Oktoberfest and Bavarian beer tent tradition here. Food and beverages are served in two beer tents. Half-meterlong sausages, pork roast, white sausages with Brezen and original Regensburg Händlmaier mustard and much more provide a good basis for enjoying the beer from Regensburg’s breweries. Many different bands provide entertainment in the tents, their musical repertoire ranging from traditional Bavarian music to rock and current chart hits. Outside the tents you can enjoy culinary delicacies such as fish on the stick, giant Brezen, gingerbread hearts and roasted almonds. The “Regensburger Knacker“ is a special delicacy: These small, thick sausages are served in a

bun with sweet and hot mustard, a pickle and horseradish, also known as “Knackersemmel.“ Rides offer great entertainment. A haunted house, several roller coasters and especially the Ferris wheel, from which you can see all of Regensburg, provide excitement for the visitors. There’s also something for the small Dult visitors. If you wish to try your luck, you can visit the many raffle booths and shooting galleries that offer prizes. Visitors are also attracted by the Dult market that offers a large variety of goods at its many booths. There is something for everybody among the goods ranging from clothes, textiles, household goods to flowers. The brilliant fireworks displays, marking the beginning and the end of the fests, are the highlights of the Regensburg fests. Dates 2018: May Dult: 10-27 May | Fall Dult: 24 Aug. – 09 Sept. Fest operations: 1 - 11 p.m., Dult market: 11 a.m. - 10 p.m. For more information go to www.r-dult.com

Mountain Fest in Erlangen (Bergkirchweih) The Oktoberfest in Munich may be larger and more famous, but the Bergkirchweih on the mountain in Erlangen is 55 years older. Every year, the traditional beer fest attract more than one million visitors. Young and old visitors are attracted by the charm and the atmosphere of fest on the mountain. When Erlangen’s Lord Mayor taps the first keg on the Thursday prior to Pentecost, the Huguenot town starts in its fifth season. Visitors can enjoy fest beer out of stone mugs, Franconian delicacies and food from around the world under beautiful, old chestnut trees, decorated with Chinese lanterns. Carousels and other rides, raffle booths and shooting galleries provide entertainment. “The mountain is calling,” as they say in Erlangen. Visit Germany’s oldest beer fest, Erlangen’s Bergkirchweih. If you are at St. Peter’s church, you might as well head over to take a stroll across the popular Viktualien Market. Bavarian Times Tip Definitely take a tour of the town hall! meet bavaria popular museum focuses on art and the history of art and is located on Königsplatz square: Alte Pinakothek is one of the world’s most famous picture galleries. It features European paintings from the 14th to the 18th century. If you prefer works of art dating from the late 18th to the 19th and 20th century, you should visit Neue Pinakothek with its more than 400 pieces of European art.

The Gothic cathedral built in the 15th century is and remains Munich’s distinctive landmark.

Another “must-see” is Munich’s city museum. It features interesting permanent exhibitions such as the exhibition “Typically Munich.” It is divided into five historic sections with more than 400 exhibits which illustrate since when and why something is considered to be “typically Munich.” Be curious and look forward to interesting numbers and facts about various topics. Naturally, Munich also features several museum that are free of charge. They include the Museum of Replicas of Classic Sculptures, the Potato Museum, the Fire Department Museum and the Geological Museum. You can also visit the Art Arcades and the exhibition rooms of the Arothek for free. A few other museum offer free admission up to the age of 18, or reduced admission fees on certain weekdays. Recreation in Munich – Isar river and English Garden Apart from many impressive buildings, Munich also features a number of locations to relax. A walk along the Isar river is popular among tourists and locals on beautiful spring days but also during all other seasons. Isar river originates in the Alps and runs through the center of the city. It invites you for a walk, bike tour, or a sunbath on warm days. Many metropolitan residents envy Munich residents for this natural river in the middle of the city which significantly increases the quality of life in Munich. The Isar is the perfect place to relax or to engage in a variety of leisure activities.

Once in Munich, I recommend you visit the English Garden. Both artistically as well as socio-historically, it is of great importance to the further development of greenery in the city. Just take a walk across the large, idyllic lawns and enjoy a short break, for example in the beautiful beer garden at the Chinese Tower, or at the famous Eisbach creek, a section of the Isar river, in which you can even swim during the summer months. meet bavaria million visitors. If you wish to visit this fascinating monument and its idyllic surroundings, you must first purchase a ticket at the Hohenschwangau ticket center which is located below the castle. The castle can only be visited when taking part of a guided tour. The excursion allows you to enter into the extravagant world of the king while enjoying the wonderful Bavarian idyll. Additionally, you can explore the area surrounding Neuschwanstein Castle, to include Hohenschwangau Castle, Mary’s bridge and the Polläts gorge.

ter of the city year-round! Regardless of the season, the English Garden and the Eisbach river are always worth your while and for years, have embodied Munich’s attitude towards life. Hofgarten park with Munich’s residence, the Bavarian State Chancellery and the Diana Temple, sights you can easily include in your walk, is located close to the English Garden. Another highlight I can recommend, if you have enough time, is the Olympia Park with some of Munich’s most important buildings such as the Olympic Stadium and the Olympic Tower. Here, variety is guaranteed: Concerts, various festivals and numerous sports activities are just a few of the many entertainment opportunities that await you here. If you are interested in the Bavarian monarchy, you should definitely not pass up a visit to Nymphenburg Palace. Walking along Nymphenburg Canal, you will eventually reach one of the most impressive buildings which attracts about 300,000 visitors annually. Once inside, you can admire its impressive interior, to include King Ludwig I. Gallery of Belles and the room in which King Ludwig II. was born. You can always visit the various museums in the palace and the beautiful park of Nymphenburg Palace which was opened around the same time as the English Garden. With its little creeks, canals and bridges and the many sculptures and little palaces, it appears like a small fairytale forest. Tip: Excursion to Neuschwanstein Castle I recommend that everyone who has a little time and would like to go on an excursion, visits the charming fairytale castle of Neuschwanstein. It is located only a 1.5 hour-drive or two-hour train ride away from Munich and en route provides you with an opportunity to see the beautiful Bavarian landscape. In 1867, King Ludwig II. started to make plans for his own castle in which he could feel like a “real” king. His new castle, first known as “New Castle Hohenschwangau” was supposed to be more beautiful and more cozy than the existing Hohenschwangau Castle. And over the years, Neuschwanstein Castle was built and opened to the public in 1886 after King Ludwig II.’s death. Today, it attracts up to 1.4 43 | Bavarian Times

Munich Tips – Culinary delicacies However, Munich does not only have a lot to offer for those who are interested in culture and history. It also provides for connoisseurs who appreciate a delicious meal and a cold beer. Several restaurants attract visitors with their typically Bavarian dishes. Generally, it can be said that Bavarian cuisine is known for its hearty dishes. Pork roast with dumplings, Weißwurst, knuckle of pork and Obatzter cheese are among Bavaria’s most famous dishes. However, yeast dumplings with vanilla sauce or potato pancakes known as Reiberdatschi or Reibekuchen are also popular dishes. All are favorably served with a fresh beer from the tap. You have to decide for yourself whether you like Weißbier, regular beer or Pils. Restaurant tip: Make sure you visit the Wirtshaus in der Au, if you want to enjoy a typical Bavarian meal. The rustic ambiance perfectly rounds off a perfect sightseeing day. Make sure to order the famous “Dessertbrettl” and let yourself be surprised. Continued on page 44

meet bavaria Munich in the summer – The most beautiful beer gardens Munich does not only attract visitors with its sights and traditional dishes, it is also known as the world’s beer capital due to its beer garden culture that spans more than 200 years. Sitting down with friends, drinking a Maß (one liter) beer and eating delicious bread with fresh country butter has turned into a long tradition. In 1812, King Max I. Joseph legalized beer gardens and with time, they attracted more and more enthusiasts from all over the world. Although there is a continuous discussion as to which beer garden is the best in town, I believe that each beer garden has its own charm. Whether it is the Seehaus in the English Garden, the Augustinerkeller as one of the largest beer gardens, the beer garden at Bavaria Park in the center of town, or the Andechser Bräustüberl at the monastery in Andechs with its century-long tradition as a pilgrims’ restaurant. Just test it yourself and pay a visit to Munich’s traditional beer gardens. Munich’s exciting nightlife The Bavarian capital’s nightlife is an experience you should not miss. At Maximiliansplatz square you can choose between five different clubs and bars all located in one street. Thee Bayerischer Hof Nightclub, located not far away from Maximiliansplatz square, is even busy on Sunday nights when the other clubs are closed. Other hip and trendy clubs and bars for a younger audience are located on Sonnenstraße and around Müllerstraße. A visit to the world-famous Hofbräuhaus near Marienplatz square is a must. Please note that it closes at 11 p.m. P1, however, Munich’s cult club on Prinzregentenstraße 1, is still the city’s most popular club and one of the most famous clubs in Germany. If you want to stay close to the train station, you should venture towards the university quarter where you will find a lot of bars, restaurants and two busy night clubs.

Viktualien market is the culinary center of Munich. On 22,000 square meters you can find everything ranging from fresh fruit and vegetables to rare kinds of cheese and exotic spices.

A bird’s eye view of Munich’s town hall on Marienplatz square.

One more final advice: Discover Munich by foot or bike. Many of the city’s highlights can be reached on foot. A nice walk around town, past the many churches and old buildings, a stop at one of the many restaurants or a short shopping spree through the many different stores downtown - that’s the perfect city trip, isn’t it?

travel The Eisbach wave at the Haus der Kunst (House of Arts) in Munich is well-known among surfers world-wide. Meanwhile, the wave at Floßlände has also become pretty famous.

The Eisbach wave in Munich Surfing on the perfect wave in Bavaria’s capital Surfing in Germany and in the center of a metropolis? That’s totally normal in Munich! Here, at the English Garden, surfers are attracted year-round by the Eisbach wave. Read the following article to find out why surfing is possible there.

When thinking about surfers, easy-going men and women, carrying their colorful surfboards across a wide beach to the roaring ocean to catch the perfect wave, come to mind immediately. Surfers ride on large waves and look totally cool while doing it. The Eisbach wave at the English Garden, however, one of Munich’s coolest sights, proofs that surfing is also possible without a wide beach and high waves. The wave is the result of an encounter between a cataract and an artificial step made of stone and has been a meeting point for surfers from all over Germany for decades. In the meantime, it has gained notoriety beyond Germany’s borders. Eisbach wave Munich – A splashy delight Eisbach creek in Munich, a section of the Isar river, is one of the city’s strongest creeks and flows through a famous part of the English Garden in the center of town. In the summer, cool surfers and many swimmers and sun worshippers meet here to cool down with a bath in the Eisbach creek or an ice-cold beer in one of the surrounding beer gardens. People who are done relaxing, meet on the little bridge directly at the Haus der Kunst (House of Arts). The large number of people is an indication that there is something to see! And that is a fact because here, in the center of Munich, may surfers jump into Eisbach to dare riding the Munich wave. Curious onlookers get to enjoy spectacular show and quite a few of them feel like getting on the board to try and conquer the Eisbach wave them-

selves. City officials, however, advise to exercise caution. Although surfing has officially been allowed there, surfers should not underestimate the dangers of the cataract. Therefore, surfing on the Eisbach wave should be left to experienced professionals. Bathing and swimming is strictly forbidden there. However, courageous and bloody beginners may surf a second, smaller wave, located about one kilometer down from the Eisbach wave. Here, you have a great opportunity to safely practice your skills. Another advantage is that you won’t be critiqued by a large number of spectators. Another quiet place to serve is the wave at the Floßlände, Munich’s not so well-known third surfing location, located out of town. Surfer city Munich – Year-round events Several year-round events indicate that Munich is a true surfer city. In summer, the Surf & Skate Festival is held, offering professionals to show their moves during a surfing contest. Beginners can take part in an exciting work shop and meet with experienced surfers. The Surf & Style event in October, which turns Munich Airport into an impressive surfing hot spot, is equally popular. Here, the world’s largest mobile surfing unit is put up. Surfers can test their skills in a 180 square-meter pool with a ten-meter wide and one-meter high wave. Pretty cool, isn’t it? And if you think now that you must come to Munich on a warm summer or fall day to make sure you do not miss all the exciting surfers on the Eisbach wave, don’t worry. Surfing the Eisbach wave is possible year-round. However, you should definitely put on a wetsuit before jumping into the wave on a cold winter’s day. | by Editor

Bamberg Tips

Experience the special flair of the beer city

Over the past years, the small city of Bamberg in Franconia has become a major tourist magnet and that did not happen by accident since the UNESCO World Heritage Site invites you to go on a discovery tour through its picturesque old town and beautiful beer gardens.

ditionally, as you walk through town, all sights will be handed to you on a silver plate! More than 1,300 building in Bamberg’s old town have been declared historic monuments. If you like, you can also discover the city by bike because in a true university town, bikes are the number one vehicles of choice!

You can tell at first glance that Bamberg is a city with a long history because the cobblestone pavement, the colorful halftimbered houses and the affectionately decorated buildings put you right back into a different time. Since Bamberg was almost completely spared from the destruction of World War II, its Medieval buildings, road infrastructure and its three-part division into Bergstadt (hill city), Inselstadt (island city) and Gärtnerstadt (gardeners’ city) is still clearly visible. So it came as no surprise when its old town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. What you should go and see in Bamberg’s subdivisions and why Bamberg’s residents have grown their vegetables for centuries downtown, what you can experience in the eleven breweries and where you can best test their delicious products, is listed below in our Bamberg tips.

Your sightseeing tour starts at the town hall, directly in the center of town. The old historic building was built directly on top of the Regnitz river and is connected to the rest of the old town by two bridges. For many, it is the city’s landmark and therefore, you will often find as a motif on postcards in one of the many souvenir shops. It’s a fact, though, that it is an eye catcher due to its traditional half-timbered construction on one face and the baroque decorative paintings on the other face of the building.!

Bamberg’s famous old own Some advice upfront: If you tour Bamberg, it’s best to do it on foot because you won’t get very far with a car in the small, medieval alleys. And strolling through the streets of old town on foot, allows you to enjoy the flair of this city even more. Ad-

Venetian flair in Franconia Our next stop is Little Venice! Yes, that’s right: Although Bamberg is already known as “Franconian Rome” because it was built on seven hills, but you will find “real” Italian flair directly along the Regnitz river. The colorful fishermen houses directly on its banks do indeed remind visitors of the Italian harbor city and if a gondola passes by, the scenery is perfect. If you like, you can book a romantic ride in a real Venetian gondola or, alternatively, on the boat “Christl.“ If all of this puts you in a true Italian mood, you might want to pay a visit to the Little Italy restaurant at the foot of the Domplatz (cathedral square). Fascinating view and tasty specialities: The "Bierkeller" in Bamberg.

Bamberg’s gardeners’ city Did you know that vegetables are grown downtown by several family-owned businesses? What sounds a little strange at first, is an old Bamberg tradition that goes back to the Middle Ages and is a distinct part of the city’s world cultural heritage. 150 years ago, there were still more than 500 businesses. Therefore, quite a few of the gardeners believe that Bamberg would not have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site if it had not been for its downtown gardens. What is special about the gardeners’ city is the fact that the gardens are located and therefore hidden in the houses’ courtyards. If you would like to see these unique, traditional gardens, then you should visit Bamberg on the Day of the Open Gardens. A circular tour through the Gardeners’ city, ending with a visit to the Gardener Museum, perfectly round out your journey through this part of Bamberg’s history. Regardless of the season, a visit to the Gardeners’ city is a must! And it was that particular tradition, that gave the residents of Bamberg their more or less charming nickname: Onion treaders! However, the citizens of Bamberg take it with a sense of humor since a Bamberg onion is one of the locals’ favorite dishes which you should definitely try! The best panoramic view of the city Are you looking for the most beautiful panoramic view across Bamberg? Then you should go to the lookout at Altenburg castle. The way up, however, is quite a long hike but the view of 47 | Bavarian Times

the beautiful old castle, overlooking town, makes up for that. It much easier, though, to get to the New Residence, right across from Bamberg’s cathedral. you can walk through the adjacent rose garden and enjoy the miraculous view. The former main residence of Bamberg’s prince-bishops is built in the renaissance and baroque styles and is used today, among other things, as state library. That the huge building has never really been finished, is shown by the so-called “waiting stones” that protrude from the left side of the building, waiting for a new wing which most likely will never be added. A visit in summer, by the way, when the roses are in full bloom, can be highly recommended because you can enjoy the beautiful view and a piece of cake in the café at the rose garden. When in Bamberg, you should not forget to pay a visit to Bamberg’s cathedral, located on the same hill. Since 1012, the impressive building with its late-Roman and early-Gothic elements overlooks the Upper Franconian city and impresses visitors with its many attractions such as St. Mary’s altar or the tomb of Pope Clemens II.

The city of beer If you are on a discovery tour through Bamberg, there is one highlight you won’t be able to miss: Bamberg’s smoke beer. The liquid gold is brewed with a lot of love and tradition everywhere in the city and in the villages around Bamberg. The larger Bamberg area has the highest density of breweries world-wide thanks to the many small and large breweries. Subsequently, there is no better place to learn more about the art of brewing! Many of the breweries offer tours, followed by tastings. After all, 400 different kinds of beer are brewed in Franconia, waiting to be tasted, ranging from March and Zwickl beer to Indian Pale Ale. Here, you will definitely find your favorite beer and you will most likely find it being served in one of Bamberg’s many beer gardens. Don’t be surprised to learn that beer gardens are called beer cellars here because most of the pubs are directly located above branched out tunnel systems, some of which were already built in the Middle Ages and are still used today to traditionally cool beer. You can start your beer discovery tour, for example, at the Weyermann Malthouse. Here, the manufacturing and processing of malt are very descriptively explained and shown during a tour that takes place daily. The specialty of this malt house are roasted malts which are used to brew the previously mentioned smoke beer. By now, the products of this malt house are so soughtafter, that they are exported into ,an parts of the world. After the tour, which is held every Wednesday for individuals and lasts about two hours, you can taste the delicious beers. Weyermann Malthouse also owns its own brewery, employs master brewers and beer sommeliers, and offers beer seminars where you learn about what the characterizes are craft beer and how the taste of a beer can be influenced within the rules and regulations of the German purity law.

If you prefer to directly watch a brewer at work while learning something about a traditional beer cellar at the same time, you can either take part in a brewery tour, or go on a beer adventure tour combined with a city tour. The beer adventure tour, offered by the Bamberg tourism office, takes you to the traditional beer cellars to include the Schlenkerla Brewery at Stephansberg, where you can taste the spicy smoke beer, eat at the Schlenkerla restaurant and enjoy the bustling, yet cozy atmosphere in the Dominican tavern. After enjoying the hearty Franconian specialties such as Schäufala, Blaue Zipfel and, of course, the Bamberg onion, you can round out your Bamberg beer tour with a smoke beer schnapps. Beer plays a huge role in Bamberg and is loved and “lived” by its residents. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that every year beer day is cherished and appropriately celebrated. There’s one event that must not be missing in any Bamberg calendar and that is the Sandkerwa! Bamberg’s largest fest takes place in August every year. During the fest, the alleys and beer booths around Sandstraße are especially crowded. If you like that type of atmosphere, than this is the right time to come and visit Bamberg! Bar-hopping in Sandstraße If you think that Bamberg has come to rest due to its age, you are wrong! The university town offers a great mix of traditional, cozy restaurants, hip bars and small clubs. This mix is the basis for the irresistible charm of Bamberg’s nightlife. During the day, students get together in the many public squares or in cafés such as the Café Müller, and in the evening, Sandstraße with its many bars shows what it has to offer. Here, Franconians prove how well they know how to party. Accommodations in Bamberg You can find cozy accommodations for a perfect stay all over town. One of them, however, stands out: The Nepomuk hotel, located in a beautiful half-timbered house over the Regnitz river. The cozy and modernly furnished rooms with a view of the river invite guests to spend relaxing nights and the next day, the hotel’s large breakfast will provide you with the necessary energy for additional tours through the city. Another great way to stay in Bamberg is to book a private apartment through Airbnb. This alternative to a classic hotel is not only very economical, it also provides you with the opportunity to stay in unique places and great insights into Franconian culture. | by Editor Bavarian Times | 48

New ways to prepare asparagus Enjoy the asparagus season with inventive recipes Delicious and spring-like variation: Warm asparagus salad with cherry tomatoes and potatoes.

Ingredients for four persons: • 500 g potatoes • 500 g white asparagus • 150 g cherry tomatoes • 2 scallions • 1 package Knorr Natürlich Lecker! Sauce Hollandaise • 90 g butter • some lemon juice • freshly grounded pepper

Preparation: 1. Cook unpeeled potatoes for 20 minutes, drain and quench with cold water. Peel and cut into pieces. 2. Peel the asparagus, cut off the ends. Cut into 4 cmlong pieces and blanch in boiling water for 8-10 minutes. Drain into strainer and quench with cold water.

(djd). For many connoisseurs, asparagus is THE culinary sign of spring. And for a good reason: There is hardly a vegetable that is so classy and has such a distinctive taste like asparagus. Therefore, all connoisseurs get to enjoy it until harvesting traditionally ends on June 24 (Johannis Day). In addition to the traditional ways of preparing asparagus, there are always new and creative ways to serve it. Fresh and natural ingredients are essential It is essential that asparagus is as fresh as possible. Connoisseurs test that by applying the “squeak test” when buying the vegetable. And all other ingredients should be fresh and natural as well. A representative survey conducted by the Nielsen Institute for the Knorr company revealed that a third of those queried where concerned about artificial ingredients in convenience products. A fourth of the respondents said they have a bad conscience when not using fresh ingredients. Those concerns are unnecessary when using products such as Knorr Natürlich Lecker! They contain 100 percent natural ingredients you know from home and no unwanted additives. Sauce Hollandaise, for example, is based on a balanced recipe with a light lemon taste, a little bit of onion and a fine peeper flavor. So why not serve asparagus in spring as a warm salad.

BBQ expert Sven Krökel in action: Fine tune your barbecue knowledge at a BBQ workshop. Workshops are offered all over Germany.

Turn your BBQ into an experience

The season starts: Seven professional tip for a successful BBQ (djd). On a warm summer evening, most folks enjoy nothing more than barbecuing with friends and neighbors and having a cold beer. However, barbecuing today is more than just putting sausages and steaks on a grill, it’s an event! You can expand your knowledge by taking a BBQ workshop. Workshops are offered all over Germany. Thüros, a manufacturer of BBQ grills, for example, operates its own BBQ school. Experts like Sven Krökel from Erfurt’s caterer SK Catering, for example, teaches classes on how to BBQ professionally. Following are seven tips for a successful BBQ by the Thuringian: •

German charcoal and briquettes are of a high-quality and did not have to travel around the world. Charcoal is sufficient if you BBQ steaks, sausages or something vegetarian because it heats up quickly and loses its heat after an hour or an hour and a half. Briquettes, on the other hand, provide a constant heat over a longer period of time.

BBQs with just sausage, steaks, potato and cucumber salad should be a thing of the past. Various groceries and modern BBQ equipment can open completely new venues.

Always prepare your BBQ with a to-do list. What needs to be marinated, vacuumed or pre-cooked? Which side dishes are to be served with which course? What type of finish is needed for the dishes? Do I need a dressing? Which sauce(s) do I serve with the meat?

For a real BBQ feeling, you must use charcoal, coal briquettes or wood: The cracking noise of the fire, the sizzling of the meat, the distinctive smell of meat and vegetables.

Often guests and grill master enjoy the food more if it is cooked at a low rather than a high heat because it significantly increases the quality of the single components.

You only know how your grill reacts when the weather and wind changes, if you always use the same type of coal or briquettes. If you know how to “work the fire,” the better you can care for your meat and side dishes.

Don’t overdo it when using marinades and spices on your meat, fish and vegetables. A basic spice mix contains salt, pepper, paprika and garlic. It is better to spice food with herbs, oils and other spices after it has been barbecued. Marinate your food to your own taste rather than buying commercial marinades and marinated food in the supermarket. Beer, by the way, should be drunk and not used to lower the heat of the barbecue.
