HE MUCH-ANTICIPATED Jazz FM Awards took place last week and brought out the best in today’s Jazz scene, from young up-and-comers to seasoned musicians. Taking place at Shoreditch Town Hall, industry insiders – including Soweto Kinch and Faithless’ Maxi Jazz – and jazz fans alike mingled throughout the ceremony, as awards were given out to worthy win-
ners from the UK and US, while guests were treated to moving performances from Laura Mvula, Donny McCaslin and Georgie Fame. Mvula – who won Soul Act of the Year – put on a captivating performance of The Man I Love in honour of what would have been Ella Fitzgerald’s 100th birthday, whilst saxophonist Donny McCaslin moved the crowd with his jazz solo. Big winners of the night included the legendary Rolling Stones, who took home both Album of the Year and Blues
Act of the Year, and collected the award alongside the band’s drummer Charlie Watts, who was also honoured for his outstanding contribution to jazz. Breakthrough Act of the Year went to south London jazz and groove duo Yussef Kamaal with Gilles Paterson being handed the Digital Initiative of The Year award, while pianist and composer Nikki Yeoh was named as Instrumentalist of The Year.
