Dr. Stuart Brown Thursday, November 7 6 p.m. Free Reception 7 p.m. Free Lecture Discovery Theatre Register online at BayKidsMuseum.org/creativitytalks World-renowned psychologist, Stuart Brown M.D., is making a rare public appearance at the Bay Area Discovery Museum this fall. The founder of the National Institute for Play and considered the grandfather of play, Dr. Brown will share his life-long research and advocacy work on the important role of play in human development; from shaping and growing young brains to staying vital through more mature life stages. This is the third event in our lecture series just for adults co-presented by ScholarShare Speaks. And it’s free, so you too can become an advocate for play and creativity in your life and in the lives of children all around us. Presented by:

Council Corner The Discovery Council is a group of dedicated volunteers who give their time and talents to support the Museum. They are an integral to the success and the fun of Goblin Jamboree, Creativity Forum and Playdate.

As the Discovery Council’s new President this fall, Ann Bailey White will take the reins of the 80+ member volunteer group, comprised of the Museum’s biggest fans. We recently had a chance to catch up with Ann Bailey to find out what motivates her to volunteer her time and what she’s planning the upcoming year.

How long have you been involved with the Bay Area Discovery Museum’s Discovery Council? Since September 2011. Last year, I was Council Vice President.

All Goblin Jamboree activities open at 8:30 a.m. for breakfast guests and at 10 a.m. for the general public. Breakfast packages start at $200 for a family of four.

Why have you decided to take on the Council Presidency this year? I have really enjoyed being involved with the Council and giving my time to the Museum. The Council is a great asset to the Museum and I wanted to be involved with leading the Council. I also think this role will be fun!

Why should other women join the Council? What are the benefits of joining? The Council is a great way to

give back to the Museum while meeting new people. I have met so many amazing women through the Council. It has a great social aspect.

What fun things do you have planned for the Council this year?

Outside of the Museum’s three great fundraisers: Goblin Jamboree, Creativity Forum and Playdate, we have some fun events planned for the Council this year like a kindergarten readiness evening event with a speaker in September, a wine tasting event and a fun Spring event.

Help out your favorite children’s museum by becoming a Goblin Jamboree Volunteer. Volunteers receive a lunch voucher, a certificate of participation and an opportunity to join the fun either before or after their shift. To volunteer, please send an email to lwood@badm.org. All you need is a ghoulish grin to lend a hand.

Fall into the Arts Danni Pascuma, Art Program Atelierista

father and daughter enter Studio 10 to find a room A filled with flattened cardboard boxes, tape and endless possibilities. As the pair ponders the different ways in which they can use the cardboard, the Museum Discovery Guide points to a pile of stacked up boxes and asks, “Does this remind you of anything?” The little girl thinks for a moment, looks at her dad, squeals, “A ROBOT!” and they immediately get to work. With brows furrowed, 5 year-old Maya asks her father, Alex, to hold a box while she tapes two boxes together to create a body and head. They discuss and tinker with the different ways they can create robot eyes. As they bring the robot to life, her dad pretends to be Robot Robby, while Maya gives several commands,

“Chocolate and ice cream for lunch, please!” The two laugh and play with their new friend before heading out of the Art Studios for more Museum adventures. With one collaborative activity, Maya and Alex thought critically and creatively. They problem solved, utilized teamwork,

tapped into previous knowledge to shape new experiences, and practiced their language abilities through dramatic play. Projects throughout our Art Studios allow children to practice the ‘soft skills’ that are becoming increasingly important in today’s society—skills such as listening, communication, critical thinking, decision making and creativity. In addition, the scientific method can be seen as the duo hypothesized, experimented and evaluated different ways to build a robot out of recycled materials. Clearly, open-ended arts experiences can play an integral role in early childhood learning. The arts are a language for children to understand and document their world where there is no right or wrong answer. They provide children with the platform to express emotions, reflect on experiences, build community, make connections and experience cultural

Seasonal Inspiration: Water Our new Seasonal Inspiration initiative links our program offerings, exhibit spaces, and arts and sciences curriculum through quarterly themes, while our natural environment provides the vision: Water, Land, Sky, and Family & Community. This season we explore Water – essential for life and a key ingredient for creative play and discovery. Check out the box to the right to see what this means for you and your family this fall in the Art Studios. Read on to see how we’ll incorporate Seasonal Inspiration: Water throughout the Museum. diversity. And through their engagement with the arts, children can reach a state of flow that lowers their stress levels, helps them problem solve and allows them to tap into their creativity. Driven by this knowledge, we are expanding our thinking to ways that we can teach not only about art, but how we can teach through the arts. In addition to our weekly projects in the Art Studios, we now offer a new Young Artists program where your 5 – 8 year-old can dive deeper into the arts. Plus for more flexibility, you can now drop off your “big kid” for this program while you explore the rest of the Museum with your “little kid.” The arts are engrained in our species. From the first cave paintings, art has been used as a medium for communication, bonding and community building. Arts bring cultural diversity and provide an outlet for young minds to express themselves. We can’t wait to explore this facet of creativity with your family at the Museum.

Discover the Arts Art Studios Studio 10: A weekly rotation of projects related to our water themes brings you and your family together. Look for our large-scale collaborative projects and ways to connect and express your creativity.

Spotlight Artists: Distinguished artists are featured monthly in Studio 5 and chosen for their connections to water. On our project table, we create developmentally-appropriate arts activities that relate to these artists’ work.

Exclusive Art Excursion

Applying thin layers of paint to vertical canvas, Steir uses gravity to create shapes independent of her own hand. This technique gives the illusion of a waterfall and other water-like images.

October: Claude Monet As the founder of the Impressionist movement, Monet used his natural environment for inspiration. Most well-known for his water lilies series, this body of work incorporates ponds, beautiful architecture and the surrounding plant life found in his gardens.

November: Dale Chihuly Supporting member and donor families get an exclusive chance to learn more about Monet’s water lilies at the Conservatory of Flowers in our new Art Excursions.

Chihuly is fascinated by the ways that water, glass, and light play on each other. His glass works vary from installations in pools, to fountains, rivers and boats.

Creative Labs Art Lab: Further your understanding of the Spotlight Artists and their work! Use droppers to explore gravity and its effect on canvas, imagine plants that live in water, and see how light shines through translucent surfaces. *Projects subject to weekly and monthly rotations.

New! Young Artist Series This brand new four-week class for your 5 – 8 year-old will incorporate an examination of art historical images with the Museum’s inquiry and project based approach to discover and explore the properties and meanings of water. Led by our Art Program Atelierista, your young artist can create water-inspired work and have the opportunity to discuss and reflect on their experience. (More information on page 12)

Exploring Together Collection The Exploring Together classes are developed and taught by our Public Programs Team, specially designed for small groups of about 10 children. These active classes highlight our open-ended child-directed educational philosophy and offer adults a chance to meet other caregivers. You can learn fun activities to try at home and be exposed to new facilitation techniques to promote creativity.

What Is Science and How Does It Relate to Creativity? WE ALL KNOW SCIENCE IS MORE THAN JUST A BUNSEN BURNER OR BEAKER, AND WE ALSO KNOW THAT CREATIVITY IS MORE THAN A GREAT ART PROJECT OR COOL NEW INNOVATION, BUT WHAT EXACTLY DOES SCIENCE AND CREATIVITY LOOK LIKE IN EARLY CHILDHOOD? ARE THEY REALLY ALL THAT DIFFERENT? One focus of our partnership with the San Francisco Unified School District – where we are training all 200 of their Pre-K teachers this summer at the Museum – is to help educators learn to identify children’s science behaviors to better support the process of science learning in their classrooms. We often think of science as very technical, perhaps conjuring up images of complicated formulas or Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. Science, however, does not have to look like that for any of us, and especially not for young children. In fact, looking at the science behaviors noted in the side box, it’s easy to see that these are natural behaviors inherent in a child’s daily life. Children are naturally curious, scientific and creative. Like creativity, science is about the process of generating new ideas as well as problem solving existing ideas – neither is about the end product. Both are processes of trial and error, of predicting and analyzing, of generating ideas and critiquing ideas. The role of the adult is to optimize that learning process by creating interactions that encourage these behaviors. Educators and parents can optimize this rich learning process and increase neurological development for young minds by focusing more on open-ended conversations and play and a little less on imparting knowledge or looking for “right” answers. In fact, most scientific theories taught today are the results of hundreds, if not thousands, of iterations of previous theories. If each iteration had not been

pursued with curiosity and perseverance, we would not have the Theory of Relativity. As we have the opportunity to provide professional development to educators, we are able to further engage in our mission to ignite and advance creative thinking for all children. If we can encourage more teachers and parents – and hence more children – to see the creativity of science, then we will have more scientists attacking some of the biggest problems our society will face in the coming decades, like global health and resource issues. So get your science hats on – play with water, play with sand, play with sound and motion, ask children open-ended questions to get their minds moving, encourage divergent thinking and new ideas, let go of the right answer for a few minutes, or hours or days – and enjoy the process of science learning.

September 2013 marks the start of the sixth year of Connections. To date, we estimate that 3,750 total children and their families have joined us on this journey. It is remarkable to consider that the children who participated in the first year of this unique comprehensive partnership program are now entering second grade. At a time when the natural world is most bountiful before the quiet of winter, families with young children are full of anticipation for the start of something new. Fall brings new rhythms of routine, new teachers and new opportunities for growth in classroombased learning. Fall is also a time to take stock. What were the successes, strengths and inspirations from which we will draw our energy in the months that lay ahead?
