Our mission is to ignite and advance creative thinking for all children.
Connections is the Museum’s centerpiece community partnership program which facilitates more than 8,000 visits annually with young learners from communities that might not otherwise have access to the Museum. Schools in the Connections program serve a high proportion of low-income families and generally serve children of color, recent immigrants, and English-language learners. Each participating school has committed to work with the Museum for multiple years to provide focused feedback in order to meet the needs of the teachers, the children, the families and the Museum. Painting the Golden Gate Bridge
Down by the Bay:
Our Class Field Trip to the Bay Area Discovery Museum Guest Contributor Isauro Michael Escamilla
he following story is an excerpt from Connections T partner educator Isauro Michael Escamilla’s long-form reflection on his April 2014 Connections visit with his students. A few days before our field trip to the Bay Area Discovery Museum, where the children would have the opportunity to go down to the beach near the Golden Gate Bridge, they made a collage with tissue paper in various shades of blue to represent the water they expected to see. For our field trip the children had anticipated the weather to be hot and sunny. When we got there, the water in the bay was rather grey, in sharp contrast with the turquoise blue collage the children had created the week before. Elvis exclaimed, “Hey! The Golden Gate Bridge is in the clouds!” And Daniel asked, “Where is the bridge? Where is the top of the bridge? I only see clouds…” The children had seen the bridge up close a few times before, but this time it looked different.

Zoe and Nasley, our Museum guides, read a story to our class. This story opened the children’s minds to imagination and to the possible animals they could come across on our field trip. They asked us to predict the animals we would find on our walk and we later revised the list to tally the animals we actually saw. Since the Golden Gate Bridge is the last thing we saw, it left on the children a big impression. When we returned to school the children reviewed the photographs to refresh their memory and make representations of what they considered important. They chose to paint a bridge. Although the Golden Gate Bridge was not initially part of the water investigation, the children’s interest and their motivation somehow made it fit in. After all, according to Manuel, “Si no hay agua no se necesita
el Puente,” which means, “If there’s no water, there’s no need for the bridge.” From my perspective, the children’s drawing is more than a graphic representation of the Golden Gate Bridge. To me, it is a symbolic representation of the connections between the busy city streets of the Mission district of San Francisco and the lush hills of Sausalito, between the teachers of Las Americas Early Education School and the dedicated staff of the Bay Area Discovery Museum. It represents the connections being made between teachers and parents, and between parents and children in a shared common experience. Isauro Michael Escamilla is a respected partner and teacher at Las Americas Early Education School for the San Francisco Unified School District. Isauro earned his MA in education from San Francisco State University. He presents at local and national conferences and contributes to academic publications. STEM Intensives Facilitated three-session series including Museum visit and two classroom visits. Led by a master teacher, the three-session series occurs over a six-week period. Partnering teachers select a content area. Sessions build upon each other; additional curricula integrating other disciplines is provided. Designed for elementary teachers seeking support implementing new standards with exploratory and active learning.

The CCC pioneers new research, thought-leadership and teacher training programs.
Creative Thinking Research Lab in the News THE CENTER FOR CHILDHOOD CREATIVITY (CCC) HAS ESTABLISHED AN ON-SITE TESTING LAB — THE CREATIVE THINKING RESEARCH LAB — AT THE MUSEUM AS A NEW COMMUNITY RESOURCE WHERE RESEARCHERS STUDYING THE COGNITIVE COMPONENTS OF CREATIVITY AND ADVANCING OUR KNOWLEDGE OF CHILD DEVELOPMENT CAN INTERACT WITH OUR YOUNG VISITORS. Helen Hadani, Ph.D., associate director of research for the CCC, explains, “I can recall from my days as a doctoral student that one of the greatest barriers to conducting high-quality research is finding a way to reach children and parents. Even when an experiment might take just minutes for a toddler to perform, researchers can spend countless hours advertising the study to convince local families to travel to the university lab to participate.” She adds, “An even greater challenge is to ensure that the children who participate in studies represent diverse communities and backgrounds, rather than disproportionately representing the children of professors and university staff.” The Creative Thinking Research Lab was conceived to accomplish two goals: • support original research related to child development and creativity • connect the Museum community in a meaningful way with our nearby academic institutions
Current research partners include labs from Stanford University, University of California at Berkeley and Mills College. The researchers onsite are investigating a wide-range of topics — including language acquisition, causal reasoning and the role of social relationships on children’s learning — that all relate to creative thinking in children. Researchers have been thrilled to find a diverse audience of parents and children willing to volunteer to be part of science. Many have volunteered to present their academic findings at monthly brown bag talks hosted during lunchtime for Museum staff and visiting research partners. In a short time, the lab is already poised to have great impact. More than 800 subjects have participated in studies since its opening, and some of the research conducted at the Museum has recently made national news in the Wall Street Journal, NPR and the Washington Post. Caren Walker, a graduate student in the Berkeley developmental psychology lab of CCC Advisor Alison, recently
published research in the journal Psychological Science which she conducted at the CCC’s Creative Thinking Research Lab. Her work with 18 to 30-month-olds in our lab explores how children and adults learn about the causal world in the absence of new observations, a phenomenon they call “learning by thinking”. This research suggests these young children were able to abstract the concepts “same” and “different” from very limited evidence. In fact, as researchers become more subtle in their experiments, we find that children are able to understand abstractions at younger and younger ages. In other words, kids know more than we think they do. More can be read about this ground-breaking research in the Wall Street Journal article “Adventure in Experimenting on Toddlers,” the Washington Post’s “How Do We Know What/When Young Kids are Ready to Learn?” and the NPR feature “Yes, Your Toddler Really is Smarter than a 5-Year-Old.”

New! Parent Classes This Fall Building upon the work of our Center for Childhood Creativity, the Museum announces the launch of new parent programming in fall 2014. These classes draw from the latest research in neuroscience, cognitive and developmental psychology, and creative learning to give parents and caregivers the support they need to raise creative, happy and thriving children. CAREGIVER/PARENT PARTICIPATION LEARNING GROUPS Caregiver/parent participation learning groups are for toddlers aged 18 – 36 months. While playing with their children in a group setting, caregivers and parents will learn through dialogue, observation and modeling with an expert from the CCC. Topics include social development and play, language acquisition and cognitive development. Parents, grandparents and nannies are welcome! A five-class session for one child and one caregiver or parent is $150.
CAREGIVER/PARENT WORKSHOPS Caregiver/parent workshops dive deep into a single topic related to childraising and/or early education. The two-hour classes provide an overview of relevant research and then give hands-on practical tips. Topics include “Raising Children Who Think Like Scientists,” “What Is Executive Function and Why Does It Matter for School Readiness,” “Supporting Early Literacy Development,” and “Parent Messaging that Promotes Risk-Taking and Confident Learning.” Parent workshops are open to all caregivers and are $100 for a single class.
