Discover STEM Learning at the Museum By Amy Eisenmann, Associate Director, Museum Programming

I n today’s educational climate, STEM is an important buzzword that gained national attention by linking the future economic success of our nation with student performance. The acronym stands for the academic fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, and is used widely in educational policy, curriculum and workforce development conversations. STEM skills for young children are particularly key. One recent study found that early math skills that children develop are strong predictors of overall academic success. (Duncan et al, 2007). Museum experiences are rich opportunities for your children to

develop early STEM skills in fun and engaging ways. We strive to have children use science process skills to conduct cycles of inquiry (making and testing hypotheses about how the world works); actively explore the natural world to gain an appreciation for and understanding of human’s role in caring for it; and develop a foundational knowledge of mathematics. Here are a few snapshots of what those crucial early learning experiences look like in our programs and exhibitions.

Fort Building Camp gives children a taste of design and engineering. Campers are welcome to build and create more than just habitable structures, including furnishings and creature comforts. This summer, counselor Sarah, had a camper, Tom, who was set on building a table. After creating the tabletop, it was time to figure out how to add legs. Fort builders often drew sketches in the Design Studio prior to executing their ideas. Drawings, being 2-D, can be a stumbling block for some when it comes to translating their ideas into three dimensions. Tom added two legs to his table, and became confused when it didn’t stand. Sarah asked him to think about tables he has seen before, and suggested they take a look at some real tables. Together they wondered how many legs a table could have and still stand. Sarah helped Tom build persistence as he tried many failures and finally realized the key: the table needed an additional leg! Tom was learning basic engineering skills as he planned, designed, built, tested, re-worked

MAKER PROGRAMS The Maker movement emphasizes innovation and entrepreneurship through building and designing. How can you join in on the Maker movement? Drop by our new weekly program, Maker Lab, Saturday afternoons from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m., for a new set of activities sure to inspire and draw out the maker in your child. Programs run January 3 – May 22.

and revised his plan, eventually arriving at success through inquiry and open-ended investigation. In the Imaginary Worlds Camp, counselor Isabel supported three year-old Jake in developing early math skills. Jake was interested in creating tickets for attendees to the show that the campers were planning for an end-of-the-week performance. He first went around to all the campers and asked them how many people would be coming to watch the show. He then tallied the total number and announced that 45 tickets were needed. He enlisted the help of a couple of friends to help cut out 45 pieces of paper and write the word ‘ticket’ on them. When the day of the show came, Jake collected the tickets as people arrived: first he hole punched each ticket, then strung the tickets up by a piece of yarn that he attached to a pipe on the ceiling of the room. He also made a sign that said, “Tickets: 5 cents or Free” that he displayed at the entrance. Throughout this experience, Jake was learning oneto-one correspondence, basic addition skills and number relationships, as well as developing an understanding that number represents quantity and that the last number spoken represents the total number in the group. Not only was he learning these skills, but doing so in a way that was meaningful to him and engaging and fun for everyone. These two brief snapshots represent hundreds of STEM learning moments that happen here at the Museum every day, through family visits in the exhibitions, daily drop-in programs like Science Lab, Nature Lab and Art Lab, school programs and paid experiences such as camps, family classes and Not-A-School, our Creative Enrichment Preschool. ENCOURAGE STEM SKILLS WITH YOUR FAMILY VISIT When you are at the Museum with your child, encourage her to display the behaviors of a scientist:

Observe the environment carefully, using all the senses.

Pose questions.

Compare and contrast, sort and order.

Make and test predictions.

Share and record findings, and pose more questions!

What is the color/texture/scent of the eucalyptus leaf? Help your child to experience and describe it.

Model asking questions about the world around you and support your child to verbalize the questions they are curious about.

Line up the sticks you find in Lookout Cove in order from biggest to smallest. Sort the boat pieces in Wave Workshop as you build a boat. Compare and contrast the sound of the musical instruments in Satterlee Way.

Make a prediction before combining two colors or materials in the art studio. What do you think will happen when you do that? Try it out!

Assist your child in speaking, drawing or acting out their findings, and in asking additional follow-up questions, just like real scientists!

Using these basic skills, your child can explore concepts of transparency and translucency at the light table in the Art Studios; the physics of sound at the musical instruments on Satterlee Way; concepts of gravity, engineering and physical science while building at Imagination Playground; and volume, weight, displacement and properties of water at the water tables throughout the site.

SARA NORRIS, TEACHER-IN-RESIDENCE We are delighted to welcome Sara Norris as Teacher-In-Residence. Sara is responsible for designing curriculum for the Museum’s school programs and for facilitating teacher professional development. Sara holds a Masters in Early Childhood Education and Multiple Subjects Credential from Mills College, and has experience as a preschool teacher and a bilingual elementary classroom teacher. Most recently, she taught at Mills College Children’s School where she was a classroom teacher, researcher, curriculum designer and mentor for teaching credential and Master’s candidates. Sara is one of two finalists from California nominated for the 2014 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, the highest honor nationally for K-12 math and science teaching. We know that Sara will lead our work to have an even greater impact in early STEM teaching and learning.

The Museum’s research division, The Center for Childhood Creativity, works with academic leaders at Berkeley, Stanford and other top institutions — sharing their insights in ways that are easy to understand and incorporate into your life. Encouraging Active Inquiry HOW EXPLORATION IS AT THE INTERSECTION OF CREATIVITY AND QUALITY STEM EDUCATION At the Center for Childhood Creativity, we train parents and teachers in researchbacked, practical approaches that advance creative thinking in children. A cornerstone of our trainings is the C3REATE framework, where each letter stands for one critical element of a learning environment designed to develop creativity. The final “E” reminds us that when our homes, classrooms and programs promote exploratory learning, children’s natural curiosity develops into intellectual interest and drive. Through exploratory learning, children develop the skills and habits needed to become creators, innovators and problem-solvers. Exploration is at the intersection of creativity and quality STEM education (science, mathematics, engineering and technology) because, as Albert Einstein wisely recognized, innovation requires you to first figure out a problem to solve and then to try out novel approaches to that problem. We learn the art of locating problems through play. Small children naturally experiment, tinker and make. Our job as caregivers and educators is to capitalize on these natural tendencies and build them into habits that prepare children for success in STEM education and for creative problem solving in life. Thinking about STEM learning in this way helps us to be patient with the baby who insists on turning the floor around his highchair into an artistic splatter reminiscent of Jackson Pollock; to

understand the toddler who insists on pouring water over the bathtub rim; to appreciate the preschooler who dismembers a daddy long leg; and to encourage the second grader who “still” creates elaborate imaginary scenarios. All of these children are, through their play, learning about the world around them. They are developing reasoning skills and seeking out problems to solve. Supporting early STEM learning is partly about being patient, taking a deep breath when your toddler pulls your hair just to witness your reaction so you can explain matter-of-factly, “That hurts my head. Don’t do that. I do not like how it feels.” It is also about the way we react, encourage and question when we see our children drawn to something. The first step is often slowing down — to hear their chatter, watch their reactions and figure out just what problem they are

working to identify. The next step is to offer some thoughtful questions that lead to further exploration. We are naturally drawn to simple questions like “What color is the school bus?” or “What does camouflage mean?” or “If our family eats six pieces of pizza tonight, how many will be left?” Certainly these kinds of questions are important for building vocabulary and basic knowledge. But they also leave little room for exploration. If we wish to build the skills and habits our children need for authentic STEM learning — for the kind of innovative thinking that leads to progress — we should shift these questions ever so slightly to open them up to children’s exploration. “What does that school bus have in common with that big rig?” or “I wonder why the chameleon can camouflage itself but we can’t. What do you think?” or “I’d like your help figuring out what size pizza to order for dinner tonight. How might we go about figuring out how much we need?” These open-ended questions develop the reasoning skills associated with STEM learning (e.g. classification, hypothesizing, predicting and quantifying). They also require higher-order thinking and model problem finding. Perhaps most importantly, though, these kinds of open-ended questions send a powerful message to children: through your powerful mind, you can create knowledge, find answers and innovate solutions.

Center Receives Prestigious Grant The Center has recently been awarded a significant grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, in recognition of its tremendous teacher professional development program. Through the grant, the Center will train 500 teachers from preschools and elementary schools that serve a high proportion of students from low-income families. The professional development will focus on standards-based STEM teaching that is engaging, developmentally-appropriate, rigorous and fun!

Connections is the Museum’s centerpiece community partnership program which facilitates more than 8,000 visits annually with young learners from communities that might not otherwise have access to the Museum. Schools in the Connections program serve a high proportion of low-income families and generally serve children of color, recent immigrants, and English-language learners. Each participating school has committed to work with the Museum for multiple years to provide focused feedback in order to meet the needs of the teachers, the children, the families and the Museum.

REFLECTIONS FROM OUR TEACHER PARTNERS This fall our flagship community partnership program Connections hit a major milestone when the Museum hosted our 50,000 field trip visitor. Since 2008, we have provided transportation and admission for young learners from community that might not otherwise have access to the Museum through a unique long-term collaboration with local subsidized preschools. As 2014 comes to an end, we are well into our 7th year of partnership with over 250 teachers and administrators in Marin, San Francisco and Contra Costa. Growing our community of Museum families wouldn’t be possible without the critical teacher allies we have in our partnership network. The Museum constantly looks to our partner teachers for insight. The dialogue between teachers and Museum staff enables us to measure the impact our collective work has for the children and families we serve. The end of the calendar year is a time for reflections on the past and resolutions for the future. Here is a look back at some insights from our partner preschool teachers about their experience last school year.
