Bay Area Outreach and Recreation Program (BORP) received a Share the Spirit grant that funded over 150 fitness classes over the past several months. BORP offers a wide variety of weekly classes including sit-fit, chair yoga, adaptive rumba, and more. They recently started a Tai Chi class specifically for the blind and visually impaired. Grant funds assisted 300 individuals with physical disabilities and vision impairments, 45% of whom are Bipoc and 60% are low-income.
The Share the Spirit grant had a significant impact on BORP. It helped raise awareness of the organization and its programs. At least two new individuals with disabilities joined a BORP program after seeing the feature in the East Bay Times publication. Additionally, the grant allowed BORP to continue its partnership with Oakland’s Young Adult Program, where students with severe disabilities take a weekly in-person fitness class taught by Jorge Macias, a BORP program associate. Jorge has enjoyed tailoring the class each week to meet the needs of the students. He is also planning on facilitating a cycling and rock climbing excursion for this group soon. Lastly, Jorge recently finished a certification through the Adaptive Training Academy and has been putting his new knowledge about adaptive fitness to good use.
The Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center utilized Share the Spirit grant funds to conduct two 10-week Business Plan classes in Spanish, benefiting 40 Latina women. This initiative equipped participants with essential business skills, empowering them to start and expand their ventures. Notably, seven Latina participants secured a total of $35,000 in grant funding in 2024 to further support their business growth.
The Share the Spirit article, featuring the program and its impact, was strategically incorporated into Renaissance’s outreach efforts. This heightened visibility led to a significant increase in donations, including a generous contribution from an East Bay donor who tripled their annual gift to $40,000 for three years. Additionally, the City of Antioch pledged $300,000 in funding over three years, potentially influenced by the program’s positive exposure. The article also attracted ten new participants to the program.
D’Andrea Robinson, founder of Queens Gettin’ Lit and one of the program’s participants, has experienced remarkable success since the article’s publication. She secured new contracts with the Contra Costa County school district and transitioned to running her business full-time. Anita Leiva of Utku Kids, another participant, continues to expand her business, offering a collection of dolls crafted by rural Peruvian women through various marketplaces and online platforms.

On Thanksgiving Day, the East Bay Times publishes its annual edition of Share the Spirit, stories, one of the most meaningful endeavors we undertake each year. This seasonal campaign that runs through December is our way of giving back to the community by shining a light on its most vulnerable residents — and showing how we all can help.
This year marks Share The Spirit’s 35th year of providing compassion and hope to the community.
Since 1989, Share the Spirit has raised more than $5 million and made more than 700 grants to help provide relief to over 800,000 people living in the East Bay, with 27 nonprofits receiving assistance in 2023. These organizations provide critical support to individuals facing some of the most challenging situations, whether it’s offering a hot meal, physical therapy services, or much needed housing support. Our stories highlighting their work showcase the impact of your donations, ensuring you can feel confident that you’re making a meaningful difference to the lives of the communities we serve.
