The top 100 academic achievers in the La Porte High School Class of 2017 were recognized at a dinner in their honor on Feb. 13. The event, held in the LPHS Student Center, was made possible by the Bill and Helen Crowder Foundation through a donation to the La Porte Education Foundation. The event included remarks by Lloyd Graham, La Porte ISD superintendent of schools; Dee Anne Thomson, president of the LPISD Board of Trustees; and Todd Schoppe, La Porte High School principal. Representatives from the Bill and Helen Crowder Foundation who attended the event were Beverly Lively and Steele Arthur and his wife, Crystal. The honorees were recognized individually, with each receiving a sweatshirt denoting their achievement. Honorees included Mia Arcangeli, Mary Kate Ayers, Giovanita Bell, Thomas Bello, Terrel Bernard, Gentry Blagg, Casey Boriskie, Corina Boyd, Emma Bradstreet, Christopher Bustamante, Alex Cantu, Jaqueline Cantu, Leslie Cantu, Payton Cavazos, Heleina Chaplin, Izza Chatta, Aleya Cook, Christopher Cook, Nathan Evans, Jonathan Flores, Brittany Fox, Amy Frias, Maureen Gallington, Adriana Garcia and Kimberli Garcia. Students learn at Bayshore Elementary/Kroger Family Math and Science Night

LPHS Interact members attend Rotary Youth Leadership Awards conference

Lomax Junior High School students earned second place for their performance of A Doctor In Spite Of Himself in the Junior High UIL One Act Play contest held at Mc Adams Junior High on Feb. 11. The company includes Hunter Anderson, Hana Brantner, Emma Borjas, Alissa Castro, Jeralyn Chaddock, Brianna Herrera, Coby Kiss, Sarah Lopez, Khaie Martinez, Jaxson Melton, Kimberly Mireles, Jenna Newman, Samuel Nieves, Ti O’Daniel, Alexandria Piatt, Jessica Short, Micah Stone, Faith Talent, and Rachel Wise. They are under the direction of Andrea Angelo and Sonja Angelo. Individual awards went to Rachel Wise for Best Actress, Coby Kiss for All-Star Cast, Hunter Anderson for Honorable Mention All-Star Cast, and Jessica Short for Best Techie. The company also earned the Best Sound Design and Best Costume and Makeup Design awards. The cast, crew and directors offer special thanks to Jay Watson, Angie Zelaya, Jennifer Arisco, Kathy Muston, Kelly Nelson, Jack Angelo, Kerry Regan, Steve Regan, Laura Barclay, Alicia Melton, Brian Huysman and all of the parents who supported the student participants by providing rides and snacks, sewed costumes and helped in other ways. The conference was held Feb. 10 through 12 in Huntsville. La Porte High School HOSA students earn top honors at area conference La Porte High School Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) members earned top honors at the area conference this past weekend, with several now heading to the State Leadership Conference in Corpus Christi March 31 through April 2. Sophomore Laural Williams placed second in Extemporaneous Health Poster, and senior Kallie Juel placed fourth in Sports Medicine. Also, out of 294 students competing in Health Care Issues, six LPHS seniors scored in the top 10 percent. They include David Garza, third; Kallie Juel, 4th; Kelsey Ramirez, 8th; senior Kirsten Spacek, 11th; Makenna Havard, 22nd, and Izza Chatta, 29th. In addition, sophomore Maya Deconge was elected the HOSA Area 6 historian and will represent LPHS and Texas HOSA at both the national and international level in 2017. HOSA is sponsored by Robin Guimbellot.


Class of 2017 valedictorian and salutatorian, history fair winners recognized

La Porte ISD trustees recognize James H. Baker Sixth Grade Campus students whose history project earned second place at the Lee College Regional History Fair and will advance to the state competition later this spring. Education Foundation hosts Dine Out to Celebrate Schools and Celebration The La Porte Education Foundation (LPEF) will host its second annual “Dine Out to Celebrate Our Schools” event on Wednesday, March 1. Eleven local restaurants will participate. On this day, these restaurants will donate 10 percent of their March 1 revenue to LPEF to benefit the students and teachers of the La Porte Independent School District. The process is simple. Patrons enjoy a meal at a participating restaurant, and restaurant owners donate a 10 percent of the proceeds to LPEF to support its Innovative Grants Program.

The mission of the La Porte Education Foundation (LPEF) is to enhance education by funding innovative and creative instructional projects for the students and teachers of the La Porte ISD. Since 1993, the La Porte Education Foundation has awarded more than $2 million dollars to more than 1,300 teachers in La Porte ISD through the Innovative Grants Program.

La Porte ISD’s annual Education Celebration, sponsored by the La Porte Education Foundation, is set for Thursday, March 2, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at La Porte High School. Parents and community members are invited to join in the celebration of the Foundation and the students, educational programs and schools of LPISD. Every LPISD school will have a booth to showcase activities at the campuses. Some teachers will display grants they received from the Foundation. Musical performances by district school groups are also scheduled throughout the event. LPISD students will have the chance to enter a drawing for an Anki Cozmo Toy Robot at the event. The school with the highest percentage of adult attendance will win $400 and the district’s “Traveling Trophy” for one year. The school with the second-highest percentage of adult attendance will win $200. Additional drawings for teachers, administrators and district personnel will be held. A raffle drawing will be held for the following prizes: 1st Prize – Six Flags Fiesta Texas Getaway (hotel accommodations for four at the Westin Riverwalk, San Antonio and four season passes to Six Flags Fiesta Texas and 2nd Prize - $500 Visa Gift Card. Donations are $5 each or 5 for $20. Tickets are available at the Communications Office at the Administration Building and district campuses or at the event. Drawings will be held for a Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 Instant Camera, Amazon Echo Dot, one year Family Membership to the Houston Zoo, cotton candy maker, four movie passes to Star Cinema Grill, and a Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition for a donation of $1 per ticket. In addition, cheeseburgers, pizza, and chili dogs, fries, chips, drinks and cookies will be sold at the event. Proceeds from all sales benefit the La Porte Education Foundation in its efforts to enhance education for LPISD students. La Porte ISD Credit by Exam Schedule LPISD will conduct Credit by Exams, without prior instruction, at the student’s home campus on March 21-23, 2017. These exams will be administered at no cost to the student. Students may pick up registration forms from their home campus beginning February 20, 2017. Completed forms, including parent signature, must be returned to their campus counselor by end of school day on February 28, 2017. Students will receive confirmation of scheduled testing by mail prior to the test date. If you have questions please call the LPISD Curriculum Dept. at 281-6047035 or your child’s school counselor.
