ames Catherwood Hormel, a fervent philanthropist and the first openly LGBT person to represent the United States as an ambassador, died in a San Francisco hospital Friday, August 13, with his husband at his side and his favorite Beethoven concerto playing. He was 88. Mr. Hormel’s family said that he died of natural causes. Mr. Hormel served as ambassador to Luxembourg from 1999 to 2001. In a 2016 interview with the Bay Area Reporter, he recalled the long and tortuous route to the diplomatic posting. It all began at a 1992 dinner with then-President Bill Clinton’s campaign treasurer, Bob Farmer. Over dinner, Farmer suggested to Mr. Hormel that he seek a presidential appointment as an ambassador. “I was quite surprised when he brought up the idea,” said Mr. Hormel, noting that over 60% of such positions are held by career employees who have come up through the ranks in the Foreign Service. The appointment did not happen easily, Mr. Hormel recalled. In fact, it wasn’t until five years after that dinner that Clinton nominated Mr. Hormel for the job. During that period, recalled Mr. Hormel, he made “dozens of visits and hundreds of phone calls” to keep his name in consideration. Mr. Hormel said he was persistent because, if appointed, “I would break a ceiling and make it easier for gay people to serve at the highest levels of government.” Senate Republicans and conservative Christians opposed Mr. Hormel’s nomination, and Clinton ultimately employed a recess appointment in May 1999, with Hormel being sworn in a month later. Since his appointment, there have been a number of gay men appointed as ambassadors. In July, President Joe Biden nominated Chantale Wong, a lesbian, to be the United States director to the Asian Development Bank, a post with the rank of ambassador. “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Ambassador Jim Hormel,” stated former President Clinton and his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. “Jim devoted his life to advancing the rights and dignity of all people, and in his trailblazing service in the diplomatic corps, he represented the United States with honor and brought us closer to living out the meaning of a more perfect union. We will always be grateful for his courageous and principled example, as well as See page 2 >>

he old Nob Hill Theatre sign will stay, but the “touch our junk” tagline is no more. That news was delivered during a public Zoom meeting August 17 as the new owner of the gay former strip club and adult theater unveiled his plans for a medical center and new housing. Representatives of the new owner of the former Nob Hill Theatre at 729 Bush Street also discussed efforts to appropriately honor the theater’s history. The Nob Hill closed in 2018. It had been owned by Larry Hoover and his husband, Gary Luce, who retired. The 30-minute meeting had about four attendees who were not members of the development team, according to Eliot Dobris, a gay man who is the communications consultant for Dr. James Chen, an orthopedic surgeon at St. Francis Hospital who now owns the site, situated between Union Square and Nob Hill. Chen, a straight ally, stated that he plans to “be a good steward of the history of the site.” According to his website, Chen works with the athletic departments of several local schools and is the team physician for the San Francisco City Football Club, an amateur soccer organization. Dobris’ presentation began by discussing the site’s storied history. “This theater was a legendary spot for gay men from 1968 to 2018 and prior to that it was a famous

location for jazz,” Dobris said. “The last owners of the theater sought a new owner to continue operating the theater. After a long search, they were unable to find one. Eventually they sold the theater to Dr. Chen, who is seeking to build a surgical center and medical center, plus new housing, including a residence for his family.” Dobris said that the city’s planning department designated the theater a historical resource after an evaluation written by Tim Kelley, the former president of the San Francisco Landmarks Commission, that was finished in 2018. “They are seeking to ensure that this piece of

LGBTQ+ history is appropriately remembered and preserved,” Dobris said, referring to the planning department. “The development team – that’s all of us – are working with [the] planning [department] to make this happen and we’re calling these efforts the Nob Hill Theater History Project.” In the renovations, therefore, the facade, the red portions of the signage, and the theater auditorium will be maintained, Dobris said, adding that all public input will be considered. Feedback can be given at the website of the Nob Hill Theater History Project at https://www.729bush.com/. See page 7 >>

Queer SF districts to honor trans history by John Ferrannini

T

wo San Francisco LGBTQ cultural districts are planning programs to commemorate a historic riot and pioneering trans activists at two events in August, which city officials say Mayor London Breed will declare as Transgender History Month. The Transgender District is planning on holding a block party commemorating the 55th anniversary of the Compton’s Cafeteria Riot at the intersection of Turk and Taylor streets. That riot in 1966 was one of the first queer uprisings against police harassment and violence in American history, predating by three years the Stonewall riots in New York City that kickstarted the modern day LGBTQ liberation movement. The 1966 riot took place at what was at the time an all-night diner at the Turk and Taylor intersection frequented by LGBTQs. “The 55th anniversary of Compton’s Cafeteria riots is such a huge milestone, and with the recent passing of transgender pioneer Felicia Flames, I think we at the Transgender District wanted to truly cultivate a celebration, and a focus on transgender joy,” stated Aria Sa’id, co-founder and president of the Transgender District, referring to Felicia “Flames” Elizondo, who died May 15. “It’s been a crazy two years with the pandemic, and the disparities we’ve seen as Black trans folks and it was important for us to center the ‘riot’ in a way that also promoted us reclaiming our joy,” Sa’id added. The block party will occur one week after the Castro LGBTQ Cultural District will be provid-

Breed will declare Transgender History Month on August 24 at City Hall, according to a news release from the Transgender District. “We are grateful to partner with the Transgender District and Mayor London Breed to declare August as Transgender History Month in San Francisco,” stated Clair Farley, a trans woman who is the executive director of the Office of Transgender Initiatives. “San Francisco has long

Tributes also came in from many others. Vice President Kamala Harris stated that she’ll always be grateful for Mr. Hormel’s friendship and counsel over many years. “During his remarkable life, Ambassador James Hormel made history – and he made the world a better

place,” Harris stated. “Jim’s kindness and commitment to human rights, including his efforts to help found the Human Rights Campaign and advocate for those living with HIV/AIDS, changed lives and inspired generations of leaders.” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (DSan Francisco) also recalled Mr. Hormel’s historic achievements. “Jim Hormel was a barrier-breaking public servant, champion for LGBTQ equality, and cherished friend who will be dearly missed in San Francisco, in our nation and around the world,” she stated. “Jim Hormel made history as the first openly gay U.S. ambassador, showing the world how the voices

of LGBTQ Americans are integral to foreign policy, and paving the way for a new generation of leaders. With his gentle yet powerful voice and undaunted determination, Jim made it his mission to fight for dignity and equality for all. Paul and I are heartbroken at this tremendous loss, and hope it is a comfort to his husband, Michael, and his children Alison, Anne, Elizabeth, James Jr. and Sarah, that Jim’s extraordinary life continues to serve as a beacon of hope and promise for LGBTQ children across our country and around the world.” Gay former state Senator Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) knew Mr. Hormel for years.

NEW GROUP! Meet Up GropPHD Welcomes SexLGBTQ+ EducatorCommunity and Author Jane Fleishman,

“We all knew Jim as a distinguished and groundbreaking U.S. ambassador, a heartfelt, knowledgeable and generous philanthropist and an accomplished leader,” Leno stated. “I knew Jim as one of the kindest and most empathetic souls I have ever known; a gentleman to his core with a sincere concern for everyone.” U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein said Mr. Hormel was a “civil rights pioneer.” “Tapped to be the ambassador to Luxembourg by President Clinton in 1997, he was the first openly gay person to serve as an ambassador. While his nomination was controversial at the time, his service was distinguished and helped advance LGBTQ rights both at home and abroad,” Feinstein stated. Imani Rupert-Gordon, executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, praised Mr. Hormel’s service to the LGBTQ community before his ambassadorship. “But long before his appointment and for decades beyond, James C. Hormel helped all of us make history,” she stated. A tireless philanthropist, his support for democracy and civil liberties served as a beacon of hope well before supporting LGBTQ causes was fashionable. Jim was an early supporter of NCLR, always understanding the imperative that the protection of our families is central to our equality, the importance of our intersectional approach to civil rights, and the shared belief that freedoms are inextricably linked, so our fight for justice must include all of us. His love of San Francisco and his support of so many of our institutions will ensure his legacy is felt for generations to come.” Kate Kendell, NCLR’s former executive director, knew Mr. Hormel well. “Jim’s passing leaves a gaping hole in many hearts,” Kendell stated. “From my earliest days at NCLR, Jim invested in both me and our work. His support, love, and friendship through the years helped sustain me through many challenging moments. He embodied an impish joy even as his resume lauded many accomplishments. We will miss everything about him and I know NCLR will continue to fight on in his legacy.”

Many honors

Mr. Hormel received many honors over the years. In 2010, he was the lifetime achievement grand marshal for the San Francisco Pride parade. He was a SF Pride parade community grand marshal in 2005. In a 2010 interview, Mr. Hormel recounted that he had attended his first SF Pride parade decades earlier. He said the parade and celebration have “taken on a different meaning as time has passed.” Mr. Hormel said initially the event was meant to demonstrate LGBTQ’s presence, especially politically. Unlike in the parade’s early days, today “there’s really a critical mass of gay and lesbian elected officials around the country, in small and large states and small and

t

large cities,” said Mr. Hormel. In an effort to promote LGBTQ rights, Mr. Hormel was one of the founders of the Human Rights Campaign Fund, later renamed the Human Rights Campaign. He was a member of the board of directors of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce and the American Foundation for AIDS Research. “As a champion for inclusion and acceptance, Mr. Hormel helped pave the way for the LGBTQ+ community by serving as the first openly gay ambassador representing the U.S. and enduring a harsh and homophobic confirmation process in the U.S. Senate,” California Governor Gavin Newsom stated. “Mr. Hormel’s work to found the Human Rights Campaign and unwavering support for those affected by HIV/AIDS was meaningful and lifechanging for many.” HRC President Alphonso David stated that Mr. Hormel was a valued member of the organization. “Jim Hormel was a giant in the movement for LGBTQ+ equality. He was a history-making and barrierbreaking diplomat who showed future generations of LGBTQ+ young people that there is no limit to what they can achieve,” David stated. “Jim also understood the power of his platform and the importance of organizing to make change. His commitment in helping to found the Human Rights Campaign and his dedication to ending the HIV/ AIDS epidemic ensure that the contributions he made will ripple out for years and decades to come.”

Generous donor

For many years, Mr. Hormel had been a philanthropist and has generously supported LGBTQ and social justice organizations. He contributed $500,000 to the San Francisco Public Library to fund the James C. Hormel Gay and Lesbian Center at the main library. (It was renamed the James C. Hormel LGBTQIA Center in 2016.) “James Hormel was a trailblazer whose impacts will be felt in San Francisco for generations,” Mayor London Breed stated. “All across the city, we can see the impacts of his life, whether it’s in important institutions he supported like the AIDS Memorial Grove or our public library, or in the young people walking down our streets who live in the wake of his courage and activism.” Horizons Foundation President Roger Doughty said that Mr. Hormel had a 30-plus year record of giving to the Bay Area LGBTQ philanthropic organization. “A leading philanthropist throughout his life, he supported a vast array of institutions in San Francisco and the Bay Area, as well as across the country,” Doughty stated in an email sent to supporters remembering Mr. Hormel. “His name – often with that of his beloved husband, Michael – showed up seemingly everywhere one looked, from cultural institutions to critical See page 8 >>

COVID-19 booster recommended for some people with HIV by Liz Highleyman

T

he U.S. Food and Drug Administration on August 12 updated its emergency use authorization for the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines to allow for an additional dose for moderately to severely immunocompromised people, including people with advanced or untreated HIV. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention endorsed the booster and specified which groups are eligible August 13. San Francisco began offering the booster August 18, according to a news release from the Department of Public Health. This federal recommendation for people living with HIV “is an important step in ensuring everyone,

including those most vulnerable to COVID-19, can get as much protection as possible from COVID-19 vaccination,” CDC director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said in a statement. In addition to people living with HIV, the recommendation also includes people receiving cancer treatment, organ or stem cell transplant recipients, and people taking medications that suppress immune function. Small studies have shown that some transplant recipients and cancer patients who did not respond well to the initial vaccine series had a stronger antibody response after a third dose. Acting FDA commissioner Dr. Janet Woodcock stressed that people who are not immunocompromised do not need an additional shot at this time. However, the Biden adminis-

tration is expected to announce that most Americans will need a booster to provide more protection against the highly transmissible coronavirus Delta variant, the Washington Post and other outlets reported this week. These additional doses would be given eight months after the previous shot, starting with health care workers and older people. Due to a lack of data, the FDA authorization and CDC recommendation do not include immunocompromised people who received the single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine – an unfortunate omission, some believe, since this vaccine appears to provide less protection. Earlier this month, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and the San Francisco Department of Public Health began offering a supple-

mental Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna dose to people who received the J&J vaccine, although they do not officially recommend it.

HIV and COVID risk

Studies continue to yield conflicting evidence about whether people with HIV are more likely to develop severe COVID. A large World Health Organization study presented at the recent International AIDS Society Conference on HIV Science, which mainly included people from South Africa, found that those with HIV had a 13% higher risk of severe COVID and a 30% higher likelihood of dying in the hospital. But a second study of more than 21,500 patients hospitalized with COVID in the United States, including

220 who were living with HIV, did not see a difference in the risk of severe illness, ICU admission, length of hospital stay, or mortality between HIVpositive and HIV-negative people. Both studies were limited by a lack of information about HIV treatment or CD4 T-cell levels, but a third analysis found that a lower CD4 count and detectable viral load were associated with more severe COVID. The CDC’s new vaccine recommendation targets this group. Small studies have found that a majority of HIV-positive people develop immunity after natural infection with the coronavirus and respond well to COVID vaccines, but this may not be the case for those See page 8 >>

Our neighbor to the north is already on it. Canada has promised refuge for 20,000 Afghans, including LGBTQs, women, and human rights workers. These are the people who have the talent and commitment to building a civil society, and any country would be fortunate to welcome them. Lee, who is chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations, stated that she’s committed to humanitarian relief and the safe resettlement of the Afghan people, especially women. “We must also remain intensely focused on investing in the safety and security of Afghan women and girls,” she stated. “An entire generation of Afghan women and girls have now seen the potential for a life of freedom and opportunity. The international community must continue to prioritize their rights and protection.” American troops who served or are serving in Afghanistan did what their country asked of them and they deserve our support. It’s tragic that so many lives were lost and so many troops sustained injuries in what’s become America’s longest war, and for what? Afghanistan’s government was always shaky due to graft and competing interests; its military was easily challenged and tentatively fought the Taliban, and in the end many abandoned their weapons, deserted, and stripped off their uniforms despite the billions of dollars in training and equipment provided by the U.S. Biden’s decision was right. “I cannot and will not ask our troops to fight on endlessly in another country’s civil war, taking casualties, suffering life-shattering injuries, leaving families broken by grief and loss,” he said. “This is not in our national security interest. It is not what our troops who have sacrificed so much over the past two decades deserve. I made a commitment to the American people when I ran for president that I would bring America’s military involvement in Afghanistan to an end. While it’s been hard and messy, and yes, far from perfect, I’ve honored that commitment.” Now Biden needs to honor a commitment to resettle all of our Afghans allies who we encouraged to envision and build a secular, multicultural nation, and ended up risking themselves in the process. It’s the right thing to do after 20 years of war.t

Support 1st housing project in 40 years in Diamond Heights by Jim Chappell

Bay Area Reporter

t

n 1977 I escaped from the Midwest and arrived in our gay haven, the Castro. Even though I was in my early 30s I did something a young person would never be able to do today ... buy a fixer in District 8. And many of the young people I worked and socialized with, gay and straight, also could live in the neighborhood because the supply of homes exceeded the demand, and prices were reasonable. Fast-forward 44 years, and the situation is completely different. While some areas of town, like South of Market, Mission Bay, and Rincon Hill, have opened their arms to new homes, others including Noe Valley, Glen Park, and Diamond Heights (all within District 8) have offered scant new infill housing despite being blessed with abundant parks, charming shopping blocks, and well-connected transit opportunities. In fact, none of those three neighborhoods has produced a single housing development of 20 or more homes in over 40 years. This is shocking. As population has increased and the supply has stayed static, homes have become scarcer and prices continue to rise, forcing out many of our LGBTQ brothers and sisters. District 8 now has the opportunity to create homes for 24 families at 1900 Diamond Street, where Diamond Street meets Diamond Heights Boulevard. And it’s not that this is a sacrifice – it is our privilege to facilitate the construction of badly needed infill housing in our neighborhood. Two important bus lines, the 52 connecting to Glen Park BART, and the 35 connecting to Castro Muni Metro, stop at the site. This is the very definition of a prime transit-oriented development site. The Diamond Heights shopping center, with its Safeway and a number of small shops and eateries, is a block away. Additional residents living in the neighborhood will support

our neighborhood businesses, more important now than ever before. More residents will also bolster Muni ridership, an important consideration as Muni is carefully considering additional service cutbacks based on patronage. Urban infill housing, like 1900 Diamond Street, is the single most effective local policy tool we have to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Cool Climate Network, out of UC Berkeley, reports that 24 homes in this location produce 799 less tons of carbon per year than the same number of households in Alamo, California, a typical East Bay bedroom community. This is an exceptionally high amount of carbon savings, far in excess of the carbon savings typically found in a shift to electric vehicles, electric appliances, or solar power. The project at 1900 Diamond will also lead to the creation of approximately 11 new affordable homes through payment of a $2.8 million fee to the San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Housing. This translates to 31% of the total homes created being affordable housing, a notable figure.

Moreover, the Cesar Chavez Foundation, which was started by the late farmworkers union cofounder 40 years ago and is today led by his son, Paul Chavez, is the land seller and will use the proceeds to further its mission of creating affordable housing and providing services to Latinx working families. As the new homes are built into the side of a steep hill, no neighbor will lose a view from their home. Diamond Heights was a redevelopment area designed in the 1960s and exhibits the aesthetics of the era, with buildings designed as sculptural masses, and the spaces in between essentially “left over spaces.” The site’s steep hillside renders it unusable for recreation uses. The building typology is similar to the houses on both Diamond Street and Diamond Heights Boulevard immediately to the north, updated to 21st century quality, resulting in an excellent contextual design. Filling in this leftover space with 24 homes will improve the coherence and urbanity of the neighborhood. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, San Francisco, the Bay Area, and the state of California remain in a deep housing crisis. The way out is to take advantage of urban infill opportunities like 1900 Diamond and share the treasured amenities of our community with new families. Adding infill homes in our neighborhood is the progressive thing to do. Please let Supervisor Rafael Mandelman know that you, too, support new homes in District 8, and testify at the Thursday, August 26, afternoon meeting of the San Francisco Planning Commission in favor of 1900 Diamond. t Jim Chappell, an urban planner, is a gay District 8 resident and the former executive director and president of SPUR.

Correcting the record on Bezis v. Wysinger

I was disappointed to read the article “East Bay attorney calls on SF Pride board prez to resign” in the August 11 edition of the Bay Area Reporter. Much of the article is the one-sided self-serving ramblings of a straight white man of privilege attacking a queer Black woman. I am not surprised that only one person chose to go on the record and respond to the reporter’s queries on the topic since most people I know choose to run far away from anything Jason Bezis is involved in. Let’s review what happened. We start off the article by finding out that Bezis, an attorney, was being suspended from the Democratic county central committee. We find out the reason why, but we only have his perspective and his explanation why he feels it was unfair. What he doesn’t mention, of course, is that the county party rules require confidentiality on the hearing to protect the accused as well as those who choose to speak out so that they may speak freely. He uses that to his advantage because anyone who was present for his hearing is severely limited in what we can say. One thing we can say, though, is that the rules also require over two-thirds of our membership to find someone guilty in order to impose judgment. You can certainly infer from the fact that he was suspended that at least two-thirds of our voting members were concerned with the allegations and found them to be credible. Next we have the heart of his accusations. The quotes Bezis attributes to Carolyn Wysinger, however, are not 100% accurate. Nevertheless let’s take a look at what, according to Bezis, was so egregious about Wysinger’s statements. He says she accused him of attacking and disrespecting a woman of color and a queer woman. Let’s take a step back for a moment and recognize the irony here. In his complaint to SF Pride and in the article he is attacking a queer Black woman. It is an ongoing pattern of behavior. He is using his power and privilege as a straight white male attorney in an attempt to remove a queer Black woman from a position of prominence in an LGBTQ+ organization! You need no further proof to understand where the truth lies and how despicable his accusations truly are. In addition, the Contra Costa Herald incorrectly quoted Bezis when they said he was the first member to be disciplined by the county party. (He was the only source for that article, too.) The county party previously removed two of our members for fraud, one of whom was then sitting as our vice chair. They were prohibited from serving as members for two to five years. Bezis was a close friend and ally of the removed members, so he was well aware that he was not the first. It’s just another misrepresentation of the facts, as he often twists the truth to a pretzel of his own self-serving purposes until it is no longer recognizable. Another completely inaccurate and self-serving mischaracterization is his suggestion that Wysinger has “contempt not only for core American constitutional values, but also for basic universal norms of empathy and decency.” This from a man who has attacked our very democracy by attempting to use his knowledge of the law and Robert’s Rules to prevent our county party from making real progress. This from a man who has unrelentingly attacked our members to the point of terrorizing them. I have had many discussions with members who have remarked that our most productive meetings of the last eight years have been those in which he was absent. I know that difficulty first-hand. I served our county Democratic Party as its first openly gay chair several years back, and I had to deal with Bezis’ constant interruptions and belligerent tirades. He has filed numerous complaints against our county party with the state party’s oversight commission, so many in fact that one of the commission members, while discussing his latest complaint just this

past Monday, referred to Bezis as a “vexatious complainant” (someone who repeatedly files complaints that lack merit). I do not believe Bezis hates those of us who identify as LGBTQ+, but I wouldn’t go so far as to call him an “ally.” In truth, he is an equal opportunity bully who has no right to accuse anyone else of a lack of human decency or empathy. He will bully anyone who disagrees with him or crosses him in any way. I know for a fact that he bullied the genderqueer transwoman who filed the complaint against him as well as many others. His bullying in many circumstances has risen to the level of terrorizing his victims. The board of directors of San Francisco Pride should continue to ignore the animus and frenetically bigoted ramblings of a bully who is also a straight white male attorney of privilege. And the B.A.R. should follow its lead. He is not worth any more of our time. Jeff Koertzen Concord, California

No on the CA recall

Governor Gavin Newsom has been fighting for LGBTQ rights since at least 2004 when he started same-gender weddings in San Francisco even before the state or U.S. Supreme Court. He is serious about fighting the climate disaster literally enveloping California, and leads science-based lifesaving approaches to COVID. But none of that is the point. I believe that beating this Republican recall election will be decided less by ideological arguments, and more by interrupting our California habit of setting aside long ballots to research, and substituting this time a different imperative to vote fast. I just need to vote No on the first question against the recall of our elected governor, making the only other question on the ballot irrelevant, and most importantly mail my ballot back immediately. The only other thing I suggest doing is to widely post or circulate a photo of you mailing your ballot to build the excitement of voting now. Otherwise one of the 40-some Republicans, independents, and unserious Democrats running will immediately become our next governor; i.e., there are no reasonable alternatives to beating the first question. Finally, mailing your ballot back promptly updates public voting records immediately so volunteers can focus on calling, texting, and mailing prospective voters, other than you.

Being governor is not a gift

I just read the editorial “Vote no on Newsom recall” in the B.A.R. [August 12] and I’ll tell you this: I will vote. The matter is: we vote to recall for a better life. What has Gavin Newsom done for California and for San Francisco in particular? Nothing. Did he build affordable houses for citizens of our city and for retired gays in our community? Did he make our life better? Did he provide our people life expectancy higher than we have for today? No. I just want to remind that to be a governor is not a gift from voters. To be a governor is trust of the people who were voting for him to make our life better, including myself. I don’t care who will govern California – Democrat or Republican – but I care who will do something to make our life better than we have today. California has high crime, high taxes, expensive living, homelessness, and so on. So, I will vote and I ask that you do too. Georgy Prodorov San Francisco

50 years in 50 weeks: 1990, Gay Games III

A

fter the first two Gay Games were held in their birthplace of San Francisco, the 1990 event went international and was held in Vancouver, British Columbia. Freelance writer Mary Richards went to Vancouver and reported in our August 9, 1990 issue that “Gay Games III is pure magic.” Reporter Karl Bruce Knapper observed: “Whatever the opening ceremonies of Gay Games III lacked in polish and sophisticated professionalism, they

more than made up for in gay and lesbian pride, spirit, and heartfelt emotion.” The Gay Games have continued over the years, held both in the U.S. and overseas. The 2022 games are scheduled to be held in Hong Kong, the first time they will be staged in Asia. But organizers there face many questions as the communist government in Beijing continues its crackdown in the semi-autonomous Chinese province.

t Gay Oakland port commissioner seated to 3rd term 6 • Bay Area Reporter • August 19-25, 2021

by Matthew S. Bajko

G

ay Oakland Port Commissioner Michael Colbruno recently won unanimous approval to serve a third four-year term on the East Bay maritime body. He is one of at least three out port commissioners now overseeing one of the 11 publicly-owned ports scattered throughout the state. Reappointed by Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf to a term ending July 1, 2025, Colbruno received unanimous support from the Oakland City Council when it approved his third term as part of its consent calendar at its July 20 meeting. A partner in the government affairs firm the Milo Group, Colbruno had previously served on the city’s planning commission. “I feel like the mini Pete Buttigieg doing transportation and logistics,” Colbruno joked in a phone interview with the Bay Area Reporter, referring to the country’s gay transportation secretary. “No, but seriously, it is exciting. I am hoping to wrap up stuff important to me.” Two items he’s focused on in particular are electric vehicle infrastructure and greening the port. Both issues have taken on greater importance as the climate changes for the worse and the infrastructure bill making its way through Congress has funding for both. “Great strides are being made with the Biden administration coming in to do that work,” noted Colbruno. “I am particularly reenergized.” One controversial issue that will likely come before Colbruno and his fellow port commissioners is the Oakland A’s baseball stadium project proposed for the Howard Terminal at the port. Negotiations between the team and Oakland officials hit a rough patch over the terms of the mixed-use development that includes the new athletic facility, housing, and public parkland, with the owners threatening to possibly move to Las Vegas. After the Oakland City Council adopted a new term sheet for the project, the team and Schaaf’s administration are back at the negotiating table. While it is still unclear if the A’s will stay in the Bay Area, Colbruno expressed optimism about the two sides reaching a deal. “I am encouraged. Rebecca Kaplan did a great job of getting the term sheet to the council, which I think saved the A’s,” said Colbruno, referring to its lesbian at-large councilwoman and vice mayor. “The mayor and her staff are involved in serious negotiations, and I heard it prompted

the A’s to cancel their last trip back to Las Vegas. So it went from really promising to bleak to really promising again.” The port commissioners would need to sign off on any development proposal from the team and are waiting to be presented with an environmental impact report on the project. Operators at the port and unions representing maritime workers have expressed opposition to seeing the A’s locate a stadium there. “Their job is to protect port land, so them being in opposition to this is no surprise. One thing I am looking at very seriously as I make up my mind is this will be the most housing now being built on the east side of the bay for people of color,” said Colbruno. “So this is not about gentrification. I think this is an opportunity for communities of color to have waterfront property. I don’t know anywhere else in North America where that opportunity exists right now.” The port, which also includes the Oakland International Airport, has seen its operations upended by the COVID-19 pandemic. Countless flights were canceled and shipments were waylaid due to the health crisis. Airlines and shipping companies are still navigating turbulent waters due to the now surging Delta variant of the coronavirus. But passenger counts have been rising this summer with airlines adding new routes out of Oakland, and the port now has the tallest cranes of any such facility in North America. “This crane is as tall as the World Trade Center. They are massive,” marveled Colbruno. “I love it. You have all these infrastructure queens making decisions about trade and logistics. It is one of the most rewarding things in my life to do.”

Few out port commissioners

In 2013, Colbruno helped launch the first LGBTQ affinity group in the nation for employees and port commissioners working at or overseeing maritime facilities across the state. It included out port commissioners from Los Angeles and San Francisco as inaugural members, though neither is serving today. It does not appear there are any LGBTQ people currently serving on the two cities’ port commissions. Elaine Forbes, an out lesbian, has served as executive director of the Port of San Francisco since 2016. Danny W. Wan, a gay man who has worked for the Port of Oakland off and on since the 1990s, became its executive director nearly two years ago. Another longtime gay employee, Robert Bernardo, became the Oakland port’s director of communications July 26. In January, the Port of San Diego welcomed two out women to its Board of Port Commissioners. Among its seven members are lesbian San Diego resident Jennifer LeSar, the wife of lesbian state Senate President pro Tempore Toni Atkins (DSan Diego), and bisexual National City resident Sandy Naranjo, who has two children with her husband. In an emailed response to the B.A.R., Naranjo noted she is the first openly LGBTQIA Latina Port Commissioner from her city and that the oversight body held a Pride panel at the Port of San Diego. Other than Colbruno and LeSar, Naranjo told the B.A.R. she was unaware of any other out LGBTQIA

port commissioners in the state. “But at least Commissioner Michael won’t be alone. Even if it is just the three of us,” wrote Naranjo, adding that she is interested in attending an upcoming affinity group meeting for out port professionals and leaders. Because of the COVID pandemic, the LGBTQ affinity group had gone on hiatus, said Colbruno. “We were visiting ports,” he said. “I am sure it will pick up again.”

LGBTQs rally for Newsom

A number of the state’s LGBTQ officials and Democratic political clubs are rallying behind Governor Gavin Newsom as he fends off the recall election targeting him. They are hosting an “LGBTQ+ Day of Action!” Thursday, August 19, to encourage LGBTQ voters throughout the Golden State to vote no in the September 14 recall election. Registered voters last week began receiving their ballots in the mail, which they have until the day of the special election to postmark, or they can head to a polling place that Tuesday to vote. The ballot consists of two questions, the first being should voters recall Newsom, a Democrat now in his third year of his first four-year term. The second question asks voters who should replace Newsom if he is recalled and lists the names of more than 40 people with various political party affiliations who qualified to run to succeed him (Newsom is ineligible to run). Voters can either choose one of the aspirants, or leave that question blank, as Newsom has encouraged people to do.

Some of the replacement candidates who have received the bulk of the mainstream media’s attention are Republicans including former San Diego mayor Kevin Faulconer; transgender former Olympian Caitlyn Jenner; businessman John Cox, who lost to Newsom in 2018; and conservative radio host Larry Elder. Democrats Jacqueline McGowan, a cannabis policy adviser, and YouTuber Kevin Paffrath are also on the ballot. Equality California Executive Director Rick Chavez Zbur, a gay man running for a Los Angeles state Assembly seat next year; San Francisco Democratic Party Chair Honey Mahogany, the first transgender individual to lead one of the state party’s local chapters; and gay Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara, the first out person elected to statewide office in California who is seeking reelection in 2022, are among those set to take part in the virtual rally, which begins at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Noting his job focus includes helping to “prevent disaster,” Lara said he is voting no on the recall and encouraged his supporters to do likewise in an email he sent out this week. “If far-right Republican forces take control of the governor’s office, it would be a catastrophe for every working Californian,” wrote Lara, a former state legislator. “We can’t let disaster happen here. That’s why I’m asking you to join me in supporting our fearless Governor and vote NO on the Republican recall by September 14th.” Participants of the online event will be asked to phone bank voters from 6 to 8 p.m. To RSVP visit https://bit.ly/3xU4ufD.t Web Extra: For more queer political news, be sure to check http:// www.ebar.com Monday mornings for Political Notes, the notebook’s online companion. social service and health organizations, including scores of LGBTQ organizations, campaigns, and causes. He tirelessly helped drive other LGBTQ people to give – and give more – to our movement.” Doughty noted that Mr. Hormel and his husband committed to a major challenge match for Horizons’ 40th anniversary last year. “It’s no coincidence that gift was a challenge, for Jim didn’t just want to give, he wanted LGBTQ nonprofits ourselves to leverage his gift so its impact became much greater than the figure on his check,” Doughty stated.

In 2016, Mr. Hormel was honored by the Commonwealth Club of California as its first Champion of Civil Rights and Social Justice Award recipient. Mr. Hormel had been very open about his private life over the years, including early struggles with coming to terms with his homosexuality. He flunked out of Princeton after his first year, “distracted by all the men” he said, and not knowing how to handle it. Once he was out of the closet, life got a lot easier, he said. In 2006, while attending the Equality Forum dinner in Philadelphia, Hormel had donated a table to Swarthmore, his alma mater, for LGBTQ students. At the dinner, he met college sophomore Michael Nguyen. “At age 70-some-

thing, I certainly was not looking” for a romantic partner, especially someone two generations younger, Mr. Hormel said in 2016. “But there was magic when we met.” “We slowly got to know each other and I realized it was real,” he said. “I realized that we are filled with judgments and preconceptions about relationships and what they could look like,” Mr. Hormel said. “I had to overcome my own prejudices and come to terms with what is really at the basis of a relationship, which is how people interact and connect. It is such a mistake to make judgments based on appearances and extraneous information.” The couple married the day after Christmas in 2014. The wedding, he said, was “extraordinarily beautiful” and “something I never dreamed could happen.” Mr. Hormel was born January 1, 1933. He was previously married to Alice Turner before he came out as a gay man. He had five children with Turner, many grandchildren, and is an heir to the Hormel meatpacking fortune. He came out as gay in 1967, according to an obituary prepared by his family. Mr. Hormel and Turner remained close friends even after their divorce in 1965, the obituary stated. During Mr.

people have contributed to social, political, and cultural progress for many marginalized communities throughout the decades,” stated Jupiter Peraza, the Transgender District’s director of social justice initiatives. “Transgender History Month is a celebration – a way to rejoice and learn about the sacrifices of our trans ancestors and the lengths of their struggles for past, present, and future generations of San Franciscans.” Nobody knows the exact date when the Compton’s Cafeteria riot took place, but what the district is calling the Riot Party will occur August 29, from noon to 4 p.m. The outdoor event is free but proof-of-vaccination or a negative COVID-19 screening within the past 48 hours is requested by the district. Sa’id told the Bay Area Reporter that district staffers, volunteers, and security – as well as food and beverage vendors – will be required to be masked, but the general public is not so required. There will be capacity limits, however.

This is a good man.” Beyond Mr. Hormel’s role as an ambassador for the U.S., he served in a variety of other public service capacities, the obituary stated. He was alternate representative of the U.S. delegation to the 51st United Nations General Assembly in 1996. He was also a member of the U.S. delegation to the 51st U.N. Human Rights Commission, which met in Geneva in early 1995. In 1995,

and again in 1997, James served on the Western States Regional Selection Panel for the President’s Commission on White House Fellowships. A businessman, Mr. Hormel served as the chairman of Equidex Inc., a San Francisco-based firm that manages his and his family’s investments and philanthropic activities. Marcus Guerrero recalled that when he first started working at Equidex, Mr. Hormel referred to him as “dear,” a term he often used when speaking to family and loved ones. Mr. Hormel saw everyone at his office as just that – family, the obituary stated Mr. Hormel earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Swarthmore College and a law degree from the University of Chicago Law School. After law school, Mr. Hormel served as dean of students and the director of admissions at the University of Chicago Law School. Mr. Hormel is survived by his five children (Alison, Anne, Elizabeth, Jimmy, and Sarah), 14 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and his husband, Michael P. N. Araque Hormel. The obituary noted that Mr. Hormel’s life was vibrant and grand, and his legacy will live on through the countless lives he changed. t

The Castro LGBTQ Cultural District board voted at its June 16 meeting to have an event to honor Johnson with costs not to exceed $10,000. Johnson, who died in 2002 at the age of 46, was a trans woman who was a prominent participant in the Stonewall riots who went on to become a beloved vocal advocate for gay and transgender issues until her death. The anniversary of her birthday is August 24. Tina Valentin Aguirre, a genderqueer person who is the manager of the Castro LGBTQ Cultural District, told the B.A.R. that the organization added COVID testing and vaccines to the day celebrating Johnson in light of the recent citywide surge in cases,

which as the B.A.R. reported did not spare the LGBTQ community. “Originally, we were planning to have an entertainment-focused event to honor Marsha P. Johnson, with a stage, DJs, and drag performers,” Aguirre stated. “We pivoted to providing testing and vaccinations for COVID-19 because so many community members were getting exposed to the virus at other in-person events. “We still honor the legacy of Marsha P. Johnson by acknowledging that there are health disparities impacting LGBTQ people, especially LGBTQ people of color,” Aguirre continued. “Though this is not the event that we originally planned, we understand that this is what the community needs right now.” Aguirre stated that “we hope to have a fun street event next year to honor Marsha P. Johnson.” The August 22 event is being put on in collaboration with the San Francisco Department of Public Health, the Castro Merchants Association and Virus Geeks, an organization that provides COVID PCR tests. The Castro Merchants did not respond to a request for comment by press time. t

guing that restricting eligibility to people with advanced or untreated HIV is unnecessary and will lead to logistical problems at vaccinations sites. “Today’s decision will just cause more confusion for people with HIV,” Lynda Dee, executive director of AIDS Action Baltimore, told the B.A.R. “It’s ridiculous to try to codify ‘advanced HIV.’ All people with HIV should have been included. That would have been clear and uncomplicated. People with HIV and their doctors should be able to decide together if a third vaccine dose is indicated.” National health agencies are recommending COVID booster shots, such as Moderna, for some people with HIV.

But that can happen under the current recommendation, Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, a gay man who is director of the CDC’s Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention, told the B.A.R. “The data we currently have really point toward folks who are more immunocompromised requiring an additional dose, as a safety net,” he said. “But the bottom line is that there’s a very clear statement that folks should talk to their health care providers. People can have different levels of being immunocompromised, and that’s something that can be discussed between a person in care and their physician. Meanwhile, for individuals out of care who are untreated, it should be a no brainer.” t

with a hidden heart of gold. However, life wasn’t easy for her. She is survived by her four siblings: Sarah, Jeff, Joe, and Alex; niece Abigail and nephews Felix, Blake, and Blair; as well as her longtime companion, Terry Jones. April and Jones spent nearly two decades together after meeting in 1988 at Female Trouble in San Francisco. April had a way about her, so special, that led most everyone she met including former lovers, friends, and co-workers to remain steadfast and committed to her always. The event will feature performances by Juanita MORE!, Afrika America, Donna Personna, Dulce de Leche, Kipper Snacks, DJ Fiera Ferrari, DJ Dreams, and Saturn Rising. Hosted by YouTube personality Diamond Stylz, it is being held in memory of Elizondo, a longtime AIDS survivor and trans activist. (https://www.ebar. com/news/latest_news//304996)

NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER ESTATE OF DAVID WILLIAM BOWE IN SUPERIOR COURT OF CALIFORNIA, COUNTY OF SAN FRANCISCO: FILE PES-21-304665

To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both, of DAVID WILLIAM BOWE, C/O MATTHEW M. SHAFAE (SBN #255879), SHAFAE LAW, 1500 OLD COUNTY RD, BELMONT, CA 94002. A Petition for Probate has been filed by WILLIAM BOWE in the Superior Court of California, County of San Francisco. The Petition for Probate requests that WILLIAM BOWE be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. The petition requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A hearing on the petition will be held in this court as follows: SEPTEMBER 01, 2021, 9:00 am, Dept. 204, Superior Court of California, 400 McAllister St., San Francisco, CA 94102. If you object to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. If you are a creditor or contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the latter of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined by section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. You may examine the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk. Attorney for petitioner: MATTHEW M. SHAFAE (SBN #255879), SHAFAE LAW, 1500 OLD COUNTY RD, BELMONT, CA 94002; Ph. (650) 389-9797.

ou hopefully know Harvey Guillén from the acclaimed FX comedy series What We Do in the Shadows as Guillermo, the servile human in a house of wacky vampires. You hopefully caught his earnest portrayal as George in the music and dance-infused Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. He also costars in the new horror comedy Werewolves Within (IFC). Now, cartoon fans can hear Guillén’s new voiceover work for Disney Animation in the kids show, Mickey Mouse Funhouse as the affable Funny the House. “It’s such a treat to play this character,” said Guillén in a phone interview. “The writers made it smart, so parents can watch it with their kids. Adults who watch the show think it’s very clever.” Of his newest role, Guillén said, “I’ve always wanted to be a part of the Disney Animation family. Everyone knows Mickey, Minnie, Pluto and all the gang. To add to that was such an honor. To be included in this iconic group was better than I could imagine.” Guillén grew up watching Disney features like Pinocchio and Peter Pan, “also Disney classics like Pollyanna with Hayley Mills, and The Parent Trap,” he said. “When people say they like The Parent Trap, I ask, ‘Wait; which one?’ For years, I thought Mills’ British accent was a Boston accent. As a kid, I would mimic her speech, thinking, ‘I’m from Boston.’” Actually born in Orange County, the 31-year-old out gay actor (and writer and producer), has been working in film and TV since 2008. He’s become a favorite among fans of diverse representation, as he’s been quoted as being “Brown, round and proud,” but also

' Harvey Guillen From fun house to vampire familiar simply for his acting skills. Like much voiceover work, especially in the midst of the pandemic, Guillén recorded his parts without other actors. He previously had a voiceover role in the Disney animated series The Owl House, which led to his second role as Funny the House. “Most of the time, it was just me in a studio with the producers and director,” said Guillén. “If it wasn’t the year that it was, there would have been more interaction.” With his unusual new character –an anthropomorphic house that can change its shape at the drop of a shutter– Guillén brings a depth one might not expect from a cartoon. “I really wanted to find the right voice,” he said. “Funny is a house. What do we think of when we think of home? I wanted to create a voice for Funny that would make you feel welcome, that fun could be had. I found a

higher vocal register, a laugh that eases tension. If, in an episode, the characters are having a bad day, they need a friend who’s looking out for them. I see Funny as a big brother who helps this already established group of friends explore their creativity and imagination. We don’t know what tomorrow brings in this crazy world, but you still have your imagination.” Guillén mentioned colleagues who have adjusted to the pandemic by doing voiceover roles, creating podcasts, and making other socially-distanced work. He even participated in a traditional radio mystery podcast. “People will persevere,” he said. “We will always find a way to create entertainment, even in a crisis. We can still make art and share it.”

While NBC cancelled the show after two seasons, online service Roku stepped up to back a two-hour wrap-up finale. Spoiler alert: on the show second season, George is hired, but soon afterward gets dismissed by Zoey (Jane Levy), his boss. His dramatic exit, sung and danced to his version of Britney Spears’ “Stronger,” amused fans. “George was a lovely character to play,” said Guillén. “Unfortunately, he may have lied in his resumé. But he made up for it in his personality. Sometimes, as with George –

hese days there doesn’t appear to be any shortage of memoirs, especially by LGBTQ writers, with Lauren Hough’s Leaving Isn’t the Hardest Part and Precious Bradley Davis’ I Have Always Been Me as recent examples. But one memoir, in particular, stands out, and that’s The Audacity of a Kiss: Love, Art and Liberation (Rutgers University Press, 2021) by Leslie Cohen. The reasons for that are numerous, including Cohen’s experiences in the art world as well as her partnership in one of the first woman-owned (read: non-mafia) lesbian bars in New York City. But perhaps it is the way that Cohen and her wife Beth have been preserved in bronze (with a coat of white paint) by sculptor George Segal in his celebrated Gay Liberation sculpture in Christopher Park across from the Stonewall Inn, that separates her story from the rest. These are just some of the subjects you can read about in The Audacity of a Kiss. Cohen, who has called Miami for nearly 30 years, was good enough to make time for an interview in advance of the publication of the book. Gregg Shapiro: Leslie, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your memoir The Audacity of a Kiss. Why was now the right time to write your story? Leslie Cohen: Actually, I started thinking about writing this story back in 2009, after I

See page 12 >>

retired from practicing law. Without being pedantic, I felt the need to educate and fill in certain gaps of history. The reasons I was so motivated to write this memoir, even though I had never really written anything before, was twofold. Beth and I were the models for George Segal’s iconic sculpture Gay Liberation in Greenwich Village in New York City. I tried to imagine what it would be like for people, years in the future, passing it by and perhaps wondering who these women were. I wanted them to know our history. I wanted them to know that these women spent their lives together (we met in 1965 and have been a couple for almost 45 years) and were very much in love. I wanted to inform and inspire and help those who are suffering with their identity to see a positive future for themselves. The second reason I wrote this memoir was to tell the story of Sahara, opened in 1976, because if I did not memorialize it in some fashion, it would be lost to the annals of history. Sahara was the first club created and owned by women for women in 1976 in New York City. My partners, Michelle, Linda and Barbara and I had created a groundbreaking women’s club and our accomplishments and the club’s significance were being disregarded, never mentioned in the 30 plus years since in any writings on the history of feminism, gay rights or nightclubs, straight, gay or otherwise, of that freewheeling era. Harvey Guillén

“They like to keep us on our toes,” he added. “Sometimes it’s more organic when the actors aren’t told the outcome of a scene. For my character, Season One was shot out of order. Sometimes, in the morning, we’d be shooting the first episode, and by lunch we’d be on episode eight. By dinner time we’d be on episode four. “I’d be in a car, wondering how Guillermo got a car, and be told, ‘You’re really frantic.’ I’d ask why, and they’d say, ‘Well, we can’t tell you.’ ‘But why is the car covered with blood?’ The element of surprise only adds to the mockumentary style of the series, spun off from Waititi and Clement’s New Zealand-based short and feature films.

“When you see Guillermo’s face and he’s terrified every second, it’s kind of real,” said Guillén. “We know what’s going to happen in a scene, but sometimes an actor will go a bit further. So the final version you see may be half scripted and half improvised.” The third season of What We Do in the Shadows will premiere September 2. The show also captures an amusingly polyamorous aspect with the vampire characters Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), Laszlo (Matt Berry) and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch), while Guillén’s orientation remains unclear. “I always consider Guillermo to

Shadow dancing

In contrast to the carefullyscripted Disney show, Guillén’s work on What We Do in the Shadows involved more improvisational and creative performing. “The creators of the show, Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, thrive on that,” said Guillén, who noted that the out-of-order shooting wasn’t always for convenience or the show’s budget.

of the historical treatment of women or lack thereof. My motivation, pure and simple, was to record for history’s sake what I and others thought was an important contribution to women and LGBTQ+ history. I realized that if I didn’t write the story no one else would. As you were writing the book, did you have a target audience in mind? Of course, being queer myself and owning and promoting women’s clubs for so many years, my target audience was LGBTQ men and women. I wanted those who are questioning their sexual or gender identity to know there is the possibility of resolution and happiness. But I also very much wanted to extend the audience to the cis community because the subjects discussed are universal: coming of age, the struggle to define yourself, relationships, survival, love, loss, failure, and resurrection. My desire was to touch the emotional and empathetic chord we all share. The first two chapters are striking in the way they present both innocence and experience, in terms of both the good and bad aspects of family, childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood. Do you think that tone is a reflection of the time period of those particular chapters? I think that when we are young and unaware, be it now or when I

There is also an unhesitant honesty in those chapters. Do you think that the book would have the same tone if you had written it 10 or 20 years ago? There are family and friends that I write about that have passed on. This gave me more freedom to be totally honest. I don’t know if I would have written with the same degree of forthrightness if they were alive because I would not have wanted to hurt or embarrass them. You write about discovering creative expression and boundary-breaking through dance and visual art, a theme that would continue throughout your life. Would you say that your exposure to and presence in the world of the artists was the most formative experience of your life? I don’t know if I can say it was the most formative experience, but it was definitely right up there. I was also strongly influenced by the revolutionary atmosphere of the 1960s and 1970s. It was a time of profound change. In the book, you talk about all the reading that you did at the beginning of your coming out. This made me wonder what it would mean to you to have The Audacity of a Kiss thought of in the same way as some of the titles you mentioned. It would be incredible, a dream

In addition to writing about books, you mention the impact that movies such as Taxi Driver had on you, as well as studying filmmaking and working as a production assistant. If there was a movie adaptation of your book, who would you want to play you and Beth? It should only happen! Since this memoir covers an expanse of time it might require different actresses in different age groups. As the older Beth and Leslie, from ages 28 on, I think Margot Robbie could play Beth and Jessica Clark, Leslie. As the college age and 20s Beth and Leslie, perhaps Bella Thorne as Beth and Sterling Jerins as Leslie. There’s such a vast array of talented actresses out there. I’m curious to know what others think. One of my favorite moments in the book occurs in chapter six, the part about coming out to your mother, to whom you were very close. What did it feel like for you to share that story? It reminded me of the deep fear we had of sharing our sexuality at a time when being queer was considered shameful and perverse. I was so afraid of losing her love. It also reminded me of the deep love my mother and I shared and how special she was. Thinking of my mother always brings tears to my eyes because I miss her so much. About Sahara, your legendary lesbian bar, you wrote, “Our club would be an oasis in the desert of conformity. It would be a place

be on a sort of tightrope, because you don’t know if he’s gay, because he doesn’t know if he’s in love with Nandor,” Guillén noted. “And while I don’t say it verbally as Guillermo, I’ve often said that the characters in the show are all queer. What part of the acronym they fall into in this queer world? Well, that has yet to be determined. But they’re all queer. We’ve seen Lazlo talk about being with another male vampire; Nandor mentions being in multiple relationships with women and men. There are all different sorts of elements. The only one who isn’t specific is Guillermo, because he’s human.” And thus the beguiling conundrum in the show, plus

t

another important hereditary aspect of Guillermo, adds depth to the otherwise witty series. For Guillén, it adds a layer of character development that expands beyond the main story. “There’s no expiration date when to come out,” he said. “We’ve all been in that place where we’re not comfortable coming out yet. Either we have too much to lose or don’t have support, whether it’s from our family or selected family, to feel the strength to do that. We see that with a lot of our queer brothers and sisters around the world.” As for Guillén’s adorably awkward character (whose arc takes a dramatic turn in the season two finale), “We’re all waiting for his journey to begin.”t

in the world where women could feel self-respected and safe.” What did it mean to you to be able to incorporate your other passions – art and music – into the space? If you are familiar with Abraham Maslow’s concept of self-actualization, this was the only time in my life where that occurred, where my personal potential was realized in the fullest way possible. It gave me meaning in life. It appealed to all the aspects of what gave me joy and allowed me to create something bigger than myself. During Pride Month/June of 2021, there were news stories about the decline in number of lesbian bars in the U.S. As someone who has a place in the history of women’s bars, what are your thoughts on this matter? I was proud to be interviewed for the Lesbian Bar Project to discuss Sahara and give the LBP more of a

Central to the story is your relationship with Beth, including your reunion after having been apart for a few years. Because Beth is such a major part of your life and the book, how involved was she in your writing of the story? She was integral. She shared her thoughts, her memories, her words. She read so many drafts that we lost count. She buoyed me up whenever I was in doubt. She was my rock. You and Beth are immortalized in George Segal’s “Gay Liberation” sculpture in Christopher Park at Sheridan Square, across the street from the Stonewall Inn, about which you write in the book. In the lengthy list of your accomplishments, where does this rank? I don’t know if I would call this an accomplishment or a stroke of fate and/or luck. At the time this sculpture was created by George Segal in 1979, very few people were out. We were among the few. Visibility has always been an important mission for both of us. Needless to say, we are extremely proud to have modeled for this sculpture. It immortalizes our love and our pride in the LGBTQ community. Frankly, the fact that we are part of this iconic sculpture overwhelms us because of its immortality! The 45th anniversary of Oct. 20, 1976, described in the book as “the night we knew there was no turning back,” regarding your relationship with Beth, is approaching. Do you have special plans to mark the occasion? Not yet! Maybe a nice dinner in Miami or New York City or a long weekend in Paris! In closing, please say a few words about living in Miami, where you have been located since 1992. It’s a beautiful place to live. The palms swaying, the turquoise waters and pastels, the sweet-smelling tropical air, the diverse cultures, are incredibly seductive. As long as you can leave in the summers!t www.leslie-cohen.com

e is considered the greatest painter of all time with only eight paintings definitively 4077A 18th St. attributed to this Old World master. He was also gay, which sullied his MONDAY-SATURDAY OPEN EVERY DAY reputation while he was alive. So 415 it is both amusing and alarming • •861••5787 that even Leonardo da Vinci, the Renaissance genius/outsider and now a global brand, takes a back seat to his artistic creation in the new spellbinding documentary, The Lost Leonardo, about the queer (in • • all senses of the word) journey of the painting Salvator Mundi. Supposedly Leonardo’s last masterwork, Salvator Mundi, at $450,300,000 in 2017, set the world record auction price, the most ever paid for a painting. One is reminded of the witty insight uttered by humorist Fran Leibowitz that at Monday 8am a Picasso auction, people were (last seating 9:45pm) applauding the price the painting sold, not the painting itself. Tuesday 8am New Adjusted Hours Such wisdom also pervades the (last seating 9:45pm) film, which plays out like a John Wednesday 8am le Carré real-life espionage thriller (last seating 9:45pm) about how this incredible painting brought together great art experts, Thursday 8am oligarchs, global billionaires, Open 24 Hours politicians, journalists, the FBI, and Friday the top museums in the world in a Open 24 Hours demoralizing display of money and greed, rather than the celebration of Saturday the transcendent nature of art. Open 24 Hours The contemporary adventure Sunday 7am of Salvator Mundi, a painting (last seating 9:45pm) of Jesus Christ as Savior of the World, begins in 2005, when Alex Parish and Robert Simon, sleeper hunters who suspected the poor condition artwork was worth more Proudly serving the community since 1977. than originally thought, purchased 3991-A 17th Street, Market & Castro it at a New Orleans auction for $1175. Then they gave the damaged 415-864-9795 painting to famed restorer Dianne Modestini, who removed the OrphanAndys_2x4_050621.indd 1 6/21/21 12:10 PM touch-ups, filled in the empty patches, and made it look almost like new. Modestini was convinced it’s a genuine Leonardo because the way Christ’s lip was developed resembled the same crafting as the enigmatic Mona Lisa. Although many critics charged Salvator Mundi was more Modestini than da Vinci, the painting was sent to London’s National Gallery where five Leonardo experts were asked to give their informal opinions about whether it was an undisputed Leonardo or primarily the work of one of his students at his workshop, MAGAZINES

making it less valuable. The problem is that there’s little provenance (the history of who owned the picture) before 1900 when a wealthy textile manufacturer purchased it. While Salvator Mundi might have been commissioned, possibly for France’s Louis XII, even in Leonardo’s own time, there’s no evidence he painted it himself. Art historians don’t know what happened to the picture between 1500 and 1900. Not surprisingly, the five experts couldn’t agree on its authenticity, but nevertheless the National Gallery in its 2011 blockbuster exhibition on Leonardo presented Salvator Mundi as a bona fide Leonardo.

Salve Sale

Other museums tried to buy the painting but it was eventually sold in 2013 to Russian oligarch Dmitry Rybolovlev through his art adviser Yves Bouvier, who acquired it from a consortium for $83 million. Unapologetically, Bouvier created a fake-auction ruse so he could sell it to Rybolovlev for $127.5 million, at a personal markup of $44.5 million. Rybolovlev, claiming Bouvier had defrauded him for years to the tune of over $1 billion, in anger, decided to sell off all the paintings Bouvier had purchased for him and handed over Salvator Mundi to Christie’s in New York for auctioning. Christie’s created a brilliant gimmicky global marketing campaign calling it the Male Mona Lisa, including a slick video depicting people (some famous like actor Leonardo di Caprio) enraptured while viewing the painting. When it’s sold for a record price, initially the buyer

t

is anonymous, but soon the new owner was identified as Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, who masterminded the execution of dissident Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The Louvre wanted to include Salvator Mundi on loan for its 2019 megahit exhibition marking the 500th anniversary of da Vinci’s death, yet despite the intervention of French President Emmanuel Macron, the deal fell apart when Prince Salman insisted the painting be placed alongside the Mona Lisa in the show. A secret 46-page booklet (whose publication was cancelled after the loan collapsed) detailed scientific examinations conducted by the Louvre, and appeared to confirm its authenticity. Meanwhile Salvator Mundi hasn’t been seen publicly since 2017 (either languishing on Prince Salman’s yacht or in a Geneva tax-free storage facility) with Prince Salman possibly planning to exhibit the painting in a new cultural arts center designed to render Saudi Arabia a preeminent arts destination.

Framing greed

The irony of this whole sordid history is while there’s still no conclusive proof the painting is a genuine da Vinci, that hasn’t stopped billionaires, powerful institutions, and countries from using Salvator Mundi for their own purposes, whether it be capital, a tool for geopolitical interests, or a bargainable commodity. Director Andreas Koefoed views the controversy as commentary on how mercenary and moneygrubbing the speculative art market has become. This gripping documentary’s strength is allowing all these differing contradictory voices to air their opinions/ interpretations and doesn’t take any sides. It’s not afraid to ponder the disturbing questions about the purpose of art this disheartening tale reveals, namely financial, political, or cultural gain. The title is snarky clever, because not only is the painting lost to us, but so is Leonardo the artist. The painting does captivate its audience, but is it due to the Leonardo byline or the art’s hypnotic sublime qualities, whoever created it? See page 15 >>

50 Years in 50 Weeks: 1990’s ‘Companion,’ shipped

I

n the May 17, 1990 arts section of the Bay Area Reporter, we get not just one but three articles about the groundbreaking film Longtime Companion. Despite the smaller independent film Parting Glances having preceded it by a few years, Longtime Companion hit strong with a wide national release, becoming essentially the first largely-viewed AIDSthemed narrative film of the decade. The ensemble story tells of a group of gay men whose friends and boyfriends get AIDS, die or survive over the course of ten years. In the B.A.R.’s coverage, Brandon Judell opens with some biographical backstory on director Norman René and screenwriter Craig Lucas. Judell wrote, “Longtime Companion confronts [our] pain and gives us hope by showing us how strong we are as individuals and as a group.”

Screenwriter Lucas said, “The material was so potentially volatile and emotional that I wanted the audience, even if they cried, to have some kind of galvanizing feeling.” In his review on the jump page, however, the late Mark Finch called the film a “well-meaning weepie.” He continued; “It’s only about decent white, middle-class Manhattan monogamites,” but later gives it good marks for being “hard-working and inevitably affecting.” Finch also interviewed actor Bruce Davison, who said that the film was made for a mainstream (i.e. straight) audience. “We’re not preaching to the converted,” Davison said. “This film has to get out to Aunt Millie.” Despite its mainstream approach, Longtime Companion remains a favorite on any ‘best gay films’ list.

Q-Music: Greetings from Vinylville

by Gregg Shapiro

W

ith the vinyl LP arrival of her new album Release Me 2 (Columbia), the compilation follow-up to 2012’s Release Me, comprised of previously unreleased material, Barbra Streisand

has entered hipster territory. Of course, the question remains how many of Barbra’s devoted alter kocker fans have made the return trip to the world of turntables (let alone downloading and streaming music), along with the so-called “younger generation.” Nevertheless, Streisand and Columbia Records (her home for nearly 63 years) deserve kudos for making the effort. Streisand, who has long been an outspoken activist and voice for social causes, opens Release Me with “Be Aware,” a Burt Bacharach/Hal David chestnut that was also recorded by the late queer singer/songwriter Laura Nyro. The song, recorded in 1971, deals with the subjects of homeless

children and world hunger, proving that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Barbra Joan Streisand, her second album of 1971, featured three Carole King compositions – “Where You Lead,” “Beautiful,” and “You’ve Got A Friend,” so it’s not surprising to learn that she recorded another King tune, “You Light Up My Life” (no, not that “You Light Up My Life”) in 1974. A pair of duets, “Rainbow Connection” with Kermit the Frog (from 1979) and “I’d Want It To Be You” with Willie Nelson (from 2014), prove that Barbra plays well with others. Her 1971 cover of Randy Newman’s “Living Without You” may lack the oomph of versions by Kelly Hogan and Nilsson, but it’s still pleasant. Arlen and Harburg’s “Right As The Rain,” from 1962, serves as a reminder of the spell early Streisand was able to cast on listeners.

More Morly

After releasing three EPs from 2015-2017, singer/songwriter and visual artist Morly (aka Katy Morley) returns with her full-length debut LP ‘Til I Start Speaking (Cascine), after having battled chronic illness. The immediate impressions one

gets from these 10 songs is their timelessness and beauty. The borderline retro arrangements on songs such as “Wasted” (complete with soulful backing vocals), “Sleeping in My Own Bed” (from her 2017 EP of the same name), “Twaine Harte,” “Up Above,” “Jazz Angel (Bill),” and “Superlunar,” are nothing less than exquisite. Additionally, the visual component to the LP, the 12-page lyric book, features Morly’s artwork, which is breathtaking to behold. Don’t hesitate to add this striking album, which is reminiscent of early Feist, to your record collection. As for Streisand, if she wants to continue her stay in the hipster haven of Vinylville, she might consider covering a Morly tune, such as “Sleeping in My Own Bed,” on her next studio album. Stranger things have happened.t

Greek love in the ranks by Tim Pfaff

A

n architectural dig on an ancient Greek battlefield, returned to in 1880, unearthed a surprising find: a mass grave of Theban soldiers carefully and deliberately buried in pairs. Make that couples. The men had fought and died as lovers, recognized as such by their countrymen. In The Sacred Band: Three Hundred Theban Lovers Fighting to Save Greek Freedom (Scribner), classics scholar James Romm doesn’t just tell: he tells all. Nearly a century and a half after the discovery, sensationalism would have been a poor strategy in relating the story. Instead marshaling all the evidence and putting it all in an hugely compelling narrative, Romm, a professor at Bard College, has produced a study with the acumen of a brain trust and the pace of a summer movie. This is no ordinary scholarship. Romm chronicles the final decades of the Greek struggle for freedom, from 379 B.C. to the 332 B.C. rout of the city-state of Thebes by Philip II of Macedon and Alexander the Great, the latter the legendary warrior whose arrival on the historical scene Romm masterfully foreshadows throughout his book. That battle, at the ancient site of Charonea, was the last stand of the unique fighting force known at the time as the Sacred Band. Romm calls it “the most consequential battle fought on Greek soil.” Judging from the blows visible on the skeletons, it was also a fierce one. But when the men were interred, their bodies were laid out in a highly deliberate formation. In many of the pairs, the soldiers were buried as they had fought: literally arm in arm. In no way is Romm making an easy generalization about “those” ancient Greeks. In his presentation, these men were an elite force known at the time as the Sacred Band. Celebrated, honored and lionized (again, literally, by way of a statue

of a lion erected over the gravesite), these Theban men saw doing battle alongside –and therefore in significant part for– their lovers as the key to their special valor, even its essence. Spontaneously called into what would eventually become their customary battle formation, these soldiers were held in the highest regard by their fellow countrymen and equally, Romm makes plain, reviled by their enemies in the wars for freedom, national identity and, ultimately, domination that rocked the rival city-states of Athens, Sparta and Thebes in the long last gasp of Greek democracy.

Life in wartime

Those wars provide the narrative through-line in Romm’s work. Drawing on a plethora of sources ranging from the chronicles of ancient historians to matters passingly addressed in in speeches that survive in the historical record, he provides accounts of the individual battles that are cinematic in their sweep. You do not have to be a classics scholar or even in particular a devotee of war writing to be swept up. Every bit as compelling are the author’s ventures into related matters, which put some tantalizing flesh on the historical skeleton. Romm is uncommonly adept in connecting the strands of myth and legend that merge they into the historical record, and at finding links to issues as current as those of our day (the Olympiads!), often with an appreciable if subtle sense of humor. September 17, covers the same territory as The Lost Leonardo. It was made by French television and is being distributed in the U.S. by Greenwich Entertainment. However, it’s the lesser effort to the far superior The Lost Leonardo, for two reasons. Savior doesn’t provide any context or history about the painting, assuming audiences already are familiar with the debate and its issues. Secondly, the deeper questions

He doesn’t just cite the contemporary historians and later commentators, including the Roman, Plutarch, he takes them on. His clear admiration of, but not to say dependence on, the Xenophon of the Hellenica does not blind him to some of that critical scribe’s homophobia. Having established that eros was as important to the Spartan understanding of manhood as it was to the Thebans, Romm spots and calls out Xenophon’s subtext that, while the Spartans would have recognized the sexual attraction between and among soldiers, they would have had the superior moral fiber not to act on it. “Philosophy and soldiery marched hand in hand among the Greeks,” Romm observes, and some of his most compelling writing takes a deep look into attitudes about and the practice of homosexuality by the likes of Socrates and Plato, again without resort to easy generalization. Similarly, his examination of the dynamics of age disparity within the couples is consistently revelatory rather than dismissively judgmental. In some of his most searching writing, often in the italicized introductions to chapters, Romm traces the influences of Sacred Band lore on later campaigners for gay rights and recognition, Walt Whitman and the British Hellenist John Addington Symonds among them. Not glossing over as simple yet important a fact as that there were not precisely 150 paired skeletons in the grave at Charonea, he scrupulously documents his assertion that “the number three hundred held a talismanic charge for the Greeks.” It’s the intellectual and dramatic charge of Romm’s investigation of the Sacred Band that makes this immensely readable book bracing summer reading rather than, for even a page, dry scholarship.t www.jamesromm.com/sacred-band

about what this sorry saga says about today’s excesses and ulterior motives are largely ignored. Savior is more intrigued by Salvator Mundi’s lurid twists and turns as well as the accompanying media excesses.
