f you find yourself lacking in Christmas spirit, you should definitely stop by Marlena’s, Hayes Valley’s historic gay bar (488 Hayes St.), where Marlena (Garry McLain, Empress 25) annually brings out his hundreds of tiny and plussized Santa Claus toys, dolls and figurines in every garb imaginable. Parties through the holiday season take on a festive tone, nodding to the pre-Christian eggnog-laden variation of this iconic daddy bear. All those Santas should inspire you to give gifts to deserving ones, including under-privileged kiddies. Sandy “Mama” Reinhart and her Family of volunteers have been collecting new unwrapped toys for local kids for years. The toys and cash donations Photos: Rich Stadtmiller go to two main organizations; Operation Dream, which works year-round with disadvantaged youth, and Sunburst Projects, which has been providing family support services, including Camp Sunburst, the nation’s first therapeutically designed summer camp program for HIV/AIDS children and their families. You really owe it to yourself to go shopping for some mystery recipient. It’s fun to relive the thrill of picking out a toy, and more fun to stop by the host bars through the season. www.mamasfamily.org ✸

ur three holiday cover models could not appear more different. And yet, they share a few similarities. Their diverse experiences, which led them to San Francisco and the LGBT community, have inspired them to give back in unique ways. Our Santa, Stu Smith, has been a name in the local bar business scene for decades. Yet his evolution as an out gay man took a while. Born in San Francisco, but raised in Palo Alto, Smith had been a Silicon Valley CEO, until one day in his 30s, still closeted, “I just couldn’t go to work anymore. I had been suppressing my homosexuality for a long time.” Smith opened a few bars with various names, including Zots and Harpoon Louie’s. Befriending David Kopay and Armistead Maupin in the 1970s helped Smith come out over the years. He became an importer-wholesaler for beer companies, and helped others open restaurants around the Bay Area. Yet his drinking and drug use became problematic. “When I was drunk, I would be openly gay, so I got more drunk. Then I got sober and seriously started coming out.” Now 70, Smith, who is dating a younger man in his 20s, sees the decades of change in gay culture, and agrees that while the Bay Area is a comfortable home for older gay men, the missing thousands who died of AIDS leaves a gap. After testing HIV-positive 25 years ago, volunteering for the then-new Shanti “was one of the greatest experiences of my life,” said Smith. “The non-profit world then didn’t have the experience with marketing and other business work, so I started helping out.” Smith was asked to be on the boards 6 BAR★TAB • bartabsf.com • December 2010

of several nonprofits, including UCSF and the Richmond-Ermet AIDS Foundation. Getting PSAs (public service announcements) produced for nonprofits led him to start his own cable show, which allowed access to wider audiences. Now in its third year, Smith’s The Drag Show regularly interviews local crossdressing talents. “I want to show the impact of drag culture, in particular, San Francisco, which goes back to the Barbary Coast gold rush. Even then, everybody knew what was going on. These days, I meet people who are creative and daring. They’re really performance artists.” Suppositori Spelling, our Mrs. Claus this month, has been a performance artist for most of this decade at countless nightclub and bars. Currently hosting the weekly Cocktailgate at Truck for three years (the 3rd annversary is December 19), Spelling continues to combine irreverent shows while giving new drag talents a chance. Trudy Va was Jarred, aka Spaz’s original drag name in 1997, “Back at the old Polk Gulch,” he said of his early roots. 2001 brought him back from Los Angeles with his more Hollywood-style drag name. While his Placerville family is divided between loving and “not quite getting” his drag work, his gift to a cousin’s wedding was a drag show in her honor. “She’s really into burlesque and wore a red dress to her own wedding.” Asked about his transition from wild guest star to show host, Spelling said that after “having lived in London for a year and a half, and performed at theatre festivals, people take you a bit more seriously when you have a few more serious gigs on your resume.” Having learned what to do and what not to do
in clubs, Spelling started working at Truck and subsequently started Cocktailgate. “I like to nurture young talent, like at Guerilla Drag, where queens can workshop numbers,” he said. “There are no rules or expectations. We’re just doing it for fun, originally with three-hour-long shows. Now, that’s changed!” Spelling’s “sloppy-on-purpose” theme has worked, “as long as we don’t break anything.” His larger group numbers at street fairs are often collaborative works where, Spelling said, “I help them focus on doing a crowd-pleaser, or pair people up with a song, because we often have a time limit I call it micro-tranaging the talent.” For our cover photographer Jose Guzman Colon, adding his book to our gift list is one of his holiday wishes. Glam Gender, a collaboration between photographer Marianne Larochelle and art director Guzman-Colon (who’s also known as drag queen Putanesca), confronts the traditional concept of glamour while featuring many of the Bay Area’s most outrageous artists and performers in San Francisco in dreamlike poses and settings. Our elvish cover boy Jorge Vieto, Jr. knew San Francisco was his kind of town long before he lived
here. Born and raised in Costa Rica, Vieto moved to the U.S. 14 years ago, and has lived in San Francisco for six years. “Fremont was just 45 minutes from the ‘gay mecca,’ so I knew of San Francisco,” said Vieto. “The first time I visited with high school friends, we took the train,” he joked, “… and I could ‘smell the gayness’ at the station.” A community activist in BDSM/Fetish advocacy and education, Vieto works for the Stop AIDS Project as their Leather Intervention coordinator. As San Francisco Leather Daddy’s boy XX II, he serves as a fraternal member of The 15 Association. Turning the preconceptions of a leather “boy” around, Vieto is also a versatile rope fetish top. “It’s a lot of fun.” “I thought I would meet resistance as a bondage top, but got a lot of help and nurturing, which used to not be the case. Most people know I’m very fluid. It depends on what I’m flagging.” Asked what Santa could stuff in the stocking of an already well-equipped bondage boy, Vieto said, “Truly, honestly, a better economy. So many nonprofits are suffering.” Asked again for specific toys, he replied enthusiastically, “Oh, yes! A CBT-3000. It’s a chastity device.” ✸

We had such fun that night, and as an added bonus... the sky didn’t fall.” Yeah, we remember the Y2K bug, too. A brush with fame made New Year’s Eve of 1992 stand out for local DJ Matt Consola. “It marked my first DJ gig in New York City at Roseland Ballroom,” he says. “I was born in New York, but grew up most of my life in the Bay Area, so I was thrilled to being going back Matt Consola to New York, especially for a New Year’s gig. I was booked in with handful of other DJs who were far more famous than I was at the time, so I had an early shift. This turned out to be a great thing, because it allowed me to walk around both backstage and in the club and meet people I would never have met. At 24, this was my biggest club to play so far, so I was nervous and anxious. Plus I new there was a ‘big midnight surprise,’ but even most of us DJs didn’t
know what it was. So just before midnight, who walks out on stage to do the countdown but Madonna, with her brother Christopher off to her side. And after the ball dropped, she announces the other surprise guest who lavishly hits the stage and begins an amazing performance. It’s RuPaul debuting ‘Supermodel.’ What a spectacle! Needless to say I was spending a large portion of the rest of the evening back in the VIP room.” Performance artist Meliza Banales spent New Year’s Eve of 2002 closer to home: “I remember being at The Lexington, and I used to be a superstitious bird,” she says, “So I decided I had to get kissed at midnight or my whole year would suck. Meliza Banales So the clock strikes 12 a.m. and balloons drop, and everyone’s making-out...but me! fter moving to San Francisco in 1996, DJ Bear Z Bub considers Don Baird’s mixes at the old Hole in the Wall and Robbie Daniels’ Trannyshack mixes as early inspirations. “I consider them my DJ parents,” he said. “When I lived in Michigan, I got a steady diet of rock and R&B. As a kid I was drawn to new wave then industrial and then electronic music. From going to gay bars, I heard plenty of dance and disco. Occasional drag shows exposed me to the diva stuff. I love many different styles of music.” That diverse taste ties in with his unique event, Around Amoeba in 180 Minutes on Friday December 10. In three hours, he’ll play at least one piece of music from every department at Amoeba Used Records, “from Wagner to Wu-Tang.” (www. amoeba.com/content/djsets.html) Currently the resident DJ at the Lone Star and for Suppository Spelling’s monthly solo night for Mary Go Round at The Lookout, Bear was one of the two resident DJs at the Charlie Horse, and I just recently played at Akbar in Los Angeles.
