Holiday Events and Shows • by David-Elijah Nahmod
H
o, ho ho! It’s that time of year again. December’s holiday-themed live shows and concerts should please anyone with alternative and traditional tastes. December 2012 marks the 100th anniversary of our world renowned San Francisco Symphony. On Friday, December 8, 1911, conductor Henry Hadley picked up his baton to lead the newly formed San Francisco Orchestra’s first ever concert. The Symphony celebrates its centennial and the holidays with a plethora of fun events, some for us grown-ups and some that our LGBT families can bring the kids to. All events are at Davies Symphony Hall (201 Van Ness, 864-6000). www.sfsymphony.org On Saturday, December 10 at 1 and 4pm, Sunday December 11 at 3pm, bask in the star power of Broadway legend and gay icon Chita Rivera as she narrates the Symphony’s holiday production of Peter and the Wolf. Musical selections include Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. Tickets range from $15-57. Sunday December 11 also hosts holiday hits from the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Tommy James conducts, beginning at 8pm. $15-68. Join Jennifer Holliday, the original Dreamgirl, and other Broadway luminaries such as Ben Vereen, Lea Salonga, and pop icon Peabo Bryson for the Symphony’s presentation of The Colors of Christmas. On Wednesday, December 14, and Thursday December 15, at 8pm on both evenings, the stars will perform holiday favorites, plus their own hits. $15-86. Davies Symphony Hall might be the place to ring in 2012. Come join the Symphony for a wild and wonderful New Year’s Eve Masquerade Ball. Masks will be provided. The Martini Brothers will perform swing music in the lobby, or you can dance on the fabulous Davies stage while the Peter Minton Orchestra serenades you. The fun starts at 9PM. $85195. www.sfsymphony.org The uber-elegant Rrazz Room inside the Hotel Nikko (222 Mason, 394-1189) has plenty of classy entertainment for the holiday season. Katya Smirnoff-Skky serves up a “tipsy” night of new and classic holiday cheer, Tuesday, December 6 at 8pm. $30. On Wednesday, December 7, at 8pm, folkrock songbird Maria Muldaur (“Midnight at the Oasis”) offers her annual Blues and Jazz Christmas Concert. $35. 4 BAR★TAB • bartabsf.com • December 2011

The following week, San Francisco is visited by another legend of the Great White Way. Franc D’Ambrosio, best known as the longest running Phantom of the Opera in Broadway history, will perform his show It’s Beginning to Look Like Christmas. The handsome, openly gay singer will perform from Tuesday, December 13 through Saturday December 17 at 8pm, with an added show on Sunday, December 18 at 7pm. $30-40. Two gay icons, both inhabiting the same body, ring in the holidays when local legend Connie Champagne performs as cinema legend Judy Garland. What’s Christmas without Judy? In Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, you can bask in holiday songs, special guests, and Santa Claus. Sunday December 18 at 4pm, and Monday December 19 at 8pm. $32-50. Sharon McNight will “sleigh” you when she tosses Twisted Xmas: A Druid’s View of the Holidays at you on Tuesday and Wednesday, December 20 and 21, at 8pm. An irreverent look at the holidays, McNight presents an alternative choice from the expected songs. She has stockpiled myriad and outrageous wacky musical commentaries about the 12 Days of Christmas. Targets include Santa, Jesus, Teddy Bears, elves, snow and Bette Davis. $30. For jazzy fun with a big band sound, spend Christmas Night with the Fabulous Bud. E. Luv. On Sunday, December 25 at 7pm. $25. www.therrazzroom If you’re feeling like “the only kid on the block without a Christmas tree,” then head over to the New Asia Restaurant (722 Pacific St.) for an evening of
Chita Rivera at Davies Hall
Kung Pao Kosher Comedy. It’s Jewish Comedy on Christmas Day in a Chinese restaurant (where else?). Host Lisa Geduldig and her headliners, Elayne Boosler, Avi Lieberman and Jeff Applebaum will give you the Bar Mitzvah you never had. It’s a real reprieve from “Jingle Bells.” Check it out on Friday and Saturday December 23 and 24. Dinner show at 6pm, ($62) or the 9:30pm cocktail show ($42); or on Sunday, Christmas Day, for a 5pm dinner show, 8:30Pm cocktail show, same prices. (925) 275-9005. www.Koshercomedy.com Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, is a more traditional state of mind than a holiday for Jews.
Join Rabbi Camille Angel at Congregation Sha’ar Zahav (290 Dolores, 861-6932), San Francisco’s LGBT Temple, for a Klezmer Shabbat (Sabbath). On Friday, December 23 at 8:15pm, come to the Shul (temple) as everyone lights candles, dances, and sings familiar tunes melded with klezmer rhythms and melodies. Cantor Sharon Bernstein, plus Stuart Brotman (on bass), and Sheldon Brown (on clarinet) will lead you in song, as your spirit soars wit the delights of Chanukah. All are welcome. Unfortunately, Bibi SF, the promoters of fabulous dance parties for LGBT Middle Easterners (shake those hips! is Bibi’s motto) will be sitting out this holiday season. But do keep an eye on Bibi’s My Space and Facebook pages. Rostam, the brains behind all those great parties, has a few events in the works. www.BibiSF.org Christmas carols will fill the halls at our beloved Castro Theater (429 Castro St. 865-2787). Stop by that stunning cinema palace on Christmas Eve, December 24, for a fabulous concert by the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus. Be prepared to laugh, jingle your sleigh bells and feel those goose bumps! Special guests include Melody Moore and Donna Sachet. Showtimes at 5, 7 and 9pm. The Lesbian/Gay Chorus will join the Men’s Chorus at 5pm only. $10. www.sfgmc.org ✸

GET A ROOMd W
Hotel Lounges Serve Class • by Jim Provenzano ant to spend a daycation in the city over the holidays? Don’t want to risk driving or hailing a cab after a night of New Year’s Eve carousing? Expecting guests? Are you a visiting tourist hoping for a holiday hook-up? Get a room. Hotel lounges in Union Square and around San Francisco offer stylish décor, handy access to room reservations, and a bevy of classy venues for an intriguing rendezvous. Whether it’s a date with an old pal or a Grindr homme du jour, hotel bars are a special treat we locals tend to overlook. Old-style elegance drips from the ornate walls of the Sir Francis Drake Hotel lobby bar. One might almost expect some Louis XIV extras to descend the impressive staircase. Drinks are a few bucks more (our martini was $12), but the tourist-watching was priceless, and the staff didn’t bug us after we ordered just one drink. 450 Powell St. 392-7755. www.sirfrancisdrake.com Of course, for spectacular views, take the elevator to the top floor of any hotel. With the Drake, its top floor is top notch. Harry Denton’s Starlight Room is as stellar inside as out. A classy blend of scenery, dancing, dining and even drag (on Sunday brunch events), The Starlight Room is almost a holiday in itself. www.harrydenton.com

For a view that offers a Western sunset while dining, the Westin St. Francis’s top floor bar and restaurant gives good view. The hotel’s “newer” section itself is a bit 70s future-retro (think Logan’s Run), but the view up top is mighty fine, and they offer New Year’s Eve packages. 335 Powell St. 3977000. www.westin.com For first-floor style on a grand scale, Hotel Monaco’s Grand Café is a great spot for a pre- or post-theatre drink, and a few nibbly things or a fullcourse French cuisine dinner. 501 Geary St. 2920101. www.monaco-sf.com Also in Union Square, Hotel Abri is not only obviously gay-friendly, with its rainbow flag hoisted below its marquee. It’s also ultra modern and affordable for the center of the shopping and theatre district. Their Puccini and Pinetti Italian Bar and Grill includes a lively bar and colorful Italian cuisine. But if you’re booking a room, unless you plan to stay up late, ask for one that doesn’t overlook the nearby nightclubs. 127 Ellis St. (866) 823-4669. www.larkspurhotels.com/collection/abri Set in the middle of the museum district, W Hotel’s bar and lounge enjoyed a top to bottom renovation just a few months ago. The new décor bring high-tech lighting and a space-age ambiance that doesn’t veer toward campy scifi. The menu at

Trace restaurant incorporates local growers and a sumptuous style. Environmentally conscious? Relax. The W is one of the newest hotels to be certified with a Silver LEED-ED, which basically means they’re cool and green. 181 Third St. 777-5300. www.wsanfrancisco.com The traditionally-designed Hotel Whitcomb has a long history of hosting LGBT events, from leather to country-western nights and ballroom competitions. With chandeliers, elegant glasswork, and intricately designed carpets, the lobby alone dazzles, and the lounge is roomy. On New Year’s Eve, the Sundance Saloon folks bring same-sex two-stepping and line dancing to a year-end crescendo. Sounds like a perfect way to lasso up some year-end fun. 1231 Market St. at 8th. 626-8000. www.hotelwhitcomb.com Several of these venues are part of the Kimpton chain of hotels. HOLIDAY HAUNTSd T Creating Families in Gay Bars • by Jim Provenzano he winter holidays are the most obvious time of year when gays, separated from their parents, are forced to decide between biological family and acquired family. While hopefully more LGBT people than ever before are comfortably out to their families, at least enough to attend traditional holidays with them, in the early days of San Francisco’s gay community, that wasn’t the case. The post-World War II environment of queer refugees left many homosexual men and women, who discovered their samesex desires during the war, were forced to decide: stay in the gayfriendly community where they docked, or return to the closet and their original homes. Many stayed in the Bay Area. So, Christmas or Hanukkah approaches. What’s a gay guy or gal to do? Fortunately, the growing number of gay bars anticipated this need for alternative community. Many bars stayed open through these days and nights, offering more than a bit of spiked eggnog for patrons who might otherwise spend the days alone.

Check out the fullpage ad for Cabaret in a December 1973 issue of our parent publication, The Bay Area Reporter. Promising what appears to be a postwar Andrews Sisters drag tribute act, “Stevens & Miller and Friends” wish patrons a “WONDERful Christmas.” They even host an “employee Christmas Party.” In the same issue, other bars advertised holiday parties. S.I.R. (the Society for Individual Rights) hosted a “Mary Kish Mess” review December 15 and 16 at the SIR Center on 83 6th St. The Ramrod (1225 Folsom St.) held its Christmas party on December 18. And the Purple Pickle (2223 Market St.) hosted a holiday affair December 19. For Cabaret, the prospect of opening in the middle of the holiday season may have been a bonus, or a hazard. There is very little other documentation of the club, once housed at 936 Montgomery St., which is now a parking lot. But no doubt some lonely souls were heartened that year, and the yuletide in San Francisco was certainly gay. ✸
