Castro Merchants proposes 2nd flagpole
Vol. 51 • No. 26 • July 1-7, 2021
Pride celebrated in SF, Oakland

T
he Castro Merchants Association is seeking to install a second flagpole in the Castro neighborhood to fly another design of the Pride flag, the group announced in a late-night news release June 23. The move comes after the Castro LGBTQ Cultural District Board of Directors voted that the Gilbert Baker-designed rainbow Pride flag that currently stands above the intersection of Market and Castro streets should be replaced with the Progress Pride flag, the merchants stated in the release. According to preliminary minutes from the cultural district board, the vote on the motion “That the Castro LGBTQ Cultural District recommend that the flag be changed at Harvey Milk Plaza” was seven in favor with two opposed, with members Stephen Torres and Steven Bracco voting against, and members Cesar Cadabes, Ms. Billie Cooper, Carnell Freeman, Elizabeth Lanyon, Levi Maxwell, Sacred Mitchell, and Tahirah Rasheed voting in favor. (Bracco writes for Hoodline.) Mahsa Hakimi abstained. Five members were absent: Corey Fusco, Jasmine Johnson, Jesse Sanford, A. Sparks, and Christopher Vasquez. The vote is unenforceable, the merchants stated, since it is the merchants association and not the district that “does pay for and maintain” the flag, but the merchants suggested the second flagpole as a “counterproposal.” “We propose to leave the internationally recognized, beloved, and historic symbol where it is and explore locations in the Castro to install a new flagpole,” the release states. “We believe the creation of an alternative space would best reflect our two sincere beliefs: symbols can change over time yet queer history matters.” The release does not give a prospective location for the second flagpole. The merchants did not respond to a request for comment. The merchants group has long sought to maintain the flag that is currently there, in spite of the new rainbow flag designs that have been adopted elsewhere in recent years. As the Bay Area Reporter reported last June, San Ramon, Dublin, and Sacramento have flown alternative flags that are intended to be more inclusive of marginalized communities; specifically the Progress Pride flag (which includes a chevron with the colors of the transgender flag, as well as brown and black stripes), in the case of the latter, and the Philadelphia Pride flag (which features black and brown stripes on the top), in the case of the two former municipalities. The Progress Pride flag was unveiled in June 2018 by nonbinary designer Daniel Quasar. The Philadelphia Pride flag is so named because it was first adopted there in June 2017 after being designed by the marketing firm Tierney. Many cities in San Mateo and Alameda counties last month flew the Progress flag in front of their city halls at the request of LGBTQ residents. San Francisco officials for the first time raised a Progress flag sent from sister city Cork, Ireland at City Hall Sunday, May 16, ahead of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, which is annually observed May 17 in scores of countries around the globe. The B.A.R. last August editorialized in favor of “a flag design that expands inclusivity” being flown from the Castro flagpole. Several online petitions at the time collected signatures in favor of replacing the flag as well. One, started by San Francisco resident Gage Lennox, urged that the Pride Progress flag replace the Baker See page 7 >>

an Francisco’s second People’s March & Rally of the COVID-19 era on Sunday, June 27 was a jubilant celebration that echoed the spirit of the 1970 San Francisco Gay Liberation March. Across the bay, Oakland Black Pride also celebrated over the weekend with a variety of events.
In San Francisco, everyone was invited to “Unite to Fight,” down Polk Street toward Civic Center, a mile-long route similar to that of the revolutionary moment in queer history 51 years ago that marked the first anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City, long considered the birth of the modern LGBTQ rights movement. This year’s march was smaller than last year’s, with several hundred people partici-
pating. Among the contingent of rebels and revelers (two blocks deep at its largest and most vibrant) chanting “Whose streets?” “Our streets!” and “Give it to the people…” “Power!” was Elizabeth Kamya, a 24-yearold Black queer woman living and working in the San Francisco as a union organizer, who was eager to march in her first Pride with the International Federation of See page 2 >> Rick Gerharter

ilicon Valley Pride will be going forward with a parade and festival in downtown San Jose in late August, after the event took place virtually last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s theme is “Standing for Love and Liberation,” according to a news release. The festival will begin Saturday, August 28, from 6 to 11 p.m., with two stages at Plaza de César Chávez Park featuring DJs and live performances. “We start up again on Sunday morning, August 29, at 10 a.m. with our parade along Market Street starting at Julian Street and ending at the main entrance of the festival,” the release states. “Festival grounds open once again after the parade ends at noon to the excitement of dance performers, talented artists, and the music of live bands. Headliners and other artists will be announced soon.” The festival will feature a Hey Girl area and stage to celebrate queer women and femmeidentified community members; live visual art exhibitions; a cocktail lounge; and food trucks, among other vendors. “We deliver two days of non-stop excitement, entertainment, food, and fun,” the release states. Saldy Suriben, a gay man who is the chief marketing officer for Silicon Valley Pride, told the Bay Area Reporter that the organization’s board of directors made the decision, tentatively, in early June to go forward with an in-person event, and that this was finalized “based on the guidance from the state published June 15. “Before making the announcement of having an in-person parade and festival, we have been monitoring the situation of the pandemic since the start of the year and considering different options,” Suriben said. “We saw vaccination statistics in California and Santa Clara County improving and heard from our community the desire to get together again, [so] we started to consider an in-person event. The major factor and the key input from our

decision was the information coming from the California Department of Public Health and their reopening guidance.” Suriben didn’t say if proof of vaccination will be required to attend. “We will continue to monitor the guidance and regulations and will be following the regulations for outdoor events provided by national, state, and local public health agencies,” Suriben stated. Admission to the festival will be $5 per day, Suriben added. When asked if there will be dancing, Suriben responded that “the ultimate programming at the event will be aligned to the guidance of the national, state, and local public health agencies.” “There will be [a] DJ section at our festival on both stages,” Suriben stated. “We are looking to create an atmosphere at our event that demonstrates the progress we are making at returning to traditional events and will feature DJs, live entertainment, and a new element this year focusing on the visual artists in the LGBTQ+ community.” Nathan Svoboda, a gay man who is president of the Project MORE Foundation and a former president of the organization that now
facilitates Silicon Valley Pride, told the B.A.R. that he is “confident and excited.” “We are collaborating with Pride and will be activating the Qmunity District as well,” Svoboda stated in an email. The Qmunity District is the new, formal designation for the LGBTQ spaces downtown. Svoboda’s group had previously advertised a free, outdoor event June 19 to celebrate Pride Month in the Qmunity District – a night of tailgate inspired activities on Post Street coinciding with a livestream of the San Jose Earthquakes Pride game – until that event had to be canceled after “the event’s primary sponsor brought some concerns to our attention today that we could not alone remedy.” Svoboda stated to the B.A.R. that “we are looking at doing something similar in the Qmunity District in the future with other partners and formats.” “It was saddening when we had to cancel our June 19 event,” he wrote. The Gay Pride Celebration Committee of San Jose, which produces Silicon Valley Pride, is the largest Pride organization in California outside of San Francisco, according to the release. Professional and Technical Engineers Local 21. “I stand in solidarity to advocate for basic human needs and dignities and bring attention to inequities, especially with COVID,” she said. Then, she summed up the sentiment of the day with a simple, yet no less thoughtful: “We ain’t free till we all free.” The People’s March started last year when the San Francisco LGBT Pride Celebration Committee’s annual parade was canceled due to the pandemic. This year, SF Pride also had to scrap its huge parade because of the health crisis, leading People’s March organizers to plan their second event. The resilience of the LGBTQ community was unwaveringly evident as friends, family, and allies from all over the Bay Area came together with tourists and residents and business owners from the Polk Gulch, Lower Nob Hill, and Tenderloin neighborhoods to mark and celebrate the 2021 version of Pride in open and expressive fashion and roaring style. Members of various local organizations including Alexander Hamilton Post 448 of the American Legion; the Freedom Socialist Party; GLBTQ+ Asian Pacific Alliance, or GAPA; Gay American Indians; and the Harvey Milk LGBTQ Democratic Club also came out bearing banners to represent and support. Said Matt Haney, supervisor for District 6, “the spirit of Pride is alive and strong [here],” while Dino Bocala, the gay co-owner of SF Plants at Polk and California streets, was happy to see every passerby. “This was a surprise,” Bocala, 57, shared after the Bay Area Reporter spotted him watching the festivities from the sidewalk. The 30-year San Francisco resident was “ecstatic, as the Polk has always been inclusive. I

didn’t know about this march, but I am excited to see it.” Organized by drag star Juanita MORE! and community artivist Alex U. Inn, the second iteration sought to reboot the original march’s idea to center trans and queer Black and Indigenous community members, as well as trans and queer people of color, and educate and empower the next generation of LGBTQ leaders. “I like that this year is non-corporate,” said Shalom Kimble, 44, a San Francisco special education teacher also known as Guard FreeQueen Deee-Lite of The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. “It started with us, and it’s gotta continue with us.” The absence of large corporate parties pulling focus from individuality down Market Street, which arguably might have redirected Pride marches away from their freedom-minded roots toward commodification, did make many hearts grow fonder of the truest meaning of occasion. “It’s important to have demonstration during Pride,” said Matthew Denney, 33, a queer paralegal from Lower Nob Hill and first-time
The rally in front of San Francisco City Hall kicked off with the melody and song of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” the Black national anthem, which suited Ayla Richards just fine. Said the 36-year-old bisexual San Francisco massage therapist, “Black and Brown people, everybody needs their equal rights.” Speakers urged attendees to honor those who came before them. “Join with me and acknowledge our ancestors, especially the Ramaytush Ohlone people, whose land you stand on today,” said drag performer Landa Lakes during her remarks. “You have to acknowledge that before the first foot stepped on this land [to colonize], we were here, we were queer, we existed.”

The Chickasaw activist and artist then led the crowd in facing east, south, west, and north to honor their families (given and chosen), the trailblazers who came before them, the original two-spirit people of the land who had the respect of their society, as well as their own voices. “You have a voice, and you need to use it, whatever you do,” Lakes urged, before adding, “Chokma’shki” or “Thank you” in Chickasaw, which she also encouraged those listening to repeat in response four times. The command of one’s voice requires confidence and self-assuredness, authenticity, and a willingness to be vulnerable in front of the entire planet. Gia Córdova, 24, is associate director of Gender Justice Leadership Programs at Oakland’s Transgender Law Center. For Eu Tazé, 31, a pansexual mixed media artist visiting from Lima, Peru, the march and rally proved illuminating experiences. “I found today to be very moving,” she said. “I got this feeling of communal acceptance that was very beautiful. I loved how honest and powerful the speakers were at the rally, and it impressed upon me how far we are in Peru from achieving this level of naturalness.”
Looking to 2022
Gauging the success of the People’s March & Rally is a tall task. Based on interactions with attendees turning up for the second year in a row, re-inventing the tradition has reclaimed it, for nothing can beat the act of showing up. “I’m back to keep the meaning and spirit of Pride for us. I am who I am. We are who we are, and we are here,” said Kostas Goulas, 36, a gay man from San Francisco. “Without them, without trans people and queer people of color, the front line, none of this would be possible. Queer power moved our world higher and forward.” Still, while gay state Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) sees the future of Pride back on Market Street as soon as 2022, he also understands progress, change, and freedom will come, when more people get involved. “Last year was no bells and whistles and very intense during COVID,” said Wiener. “We who have privilege need to look out for the rest of the community.” Organizers will continue to raise money to cover the costs of the event. As of press time, the GoFundMe fundraiser had raised $1,568 of a $5,000 goal.t

Stern expanded the organization to establish a permanent presence at the United Nations, a Global Research Program, an Arabic Media Project, a Corporate Engagement Program, and a Caribbean Program. Moreover, Stern created a training and advocacy program for LGBTIQ activists, Advocacy Week, that has become a model used around the world. Stern’s vision was for OutRight to help LGBTIQ movements accelerate their progress by focusing on research, resourcing, and advocacy, the release stated. Guided by a conviction that LGBTIQ movements need research to advocate for law and policy change, Stern led OutRight’s publication of landmark global reports documenting the impact of COVID-19 on LGBTIQ people and exposing the global reach of socalled conversion therapy – practices aiming to change sexual orientation or gender identity which are professionally repudiated as futile and damaging. Stern also focused on the under-resourcing of LGBTIQ movements and guided OutRight to create new resources for LGBTIQ activists, organizations, and allies on the frontlines. During her tenure, OutRight helped launch a dozen LGBTIQ organizations; trained over 1,000 LGBTIQ activists; and distributed millions of dollars in grants to LGBTIQ organizations, including creating the largest global LGBTIQ COVID-19 relief fund in the world, which has raised more than $4 million to support LGBTIQ communities in 80 countries. Jennifer Pizer, the law and policy director for Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, is co-chair of OutRight’s board of directors. “The United States is emerging from four years of unreliable foreign policy, distortions of international human rights standards, and backs turned on LGBTIQ people domestically,” Pizer stated. “In such times, LGBTIQ communities in the United States and around the world need and deserve a clear-eyed human rights champion to galvanize a wise reemergence of the U.S. government insisting on full human rights for LGBTIQ people everywhere. Jessica is that person. No one works with deeper commitment, greater integrity, or more skillful strategic vision on behalf of our global LGBTIQ family. We who know Jessica’s talents best
know what an immense positive impact she can have. This is an exciting new day for our global movement.” The White House stated that at OutRight Stern has supported the legal registration of LGBTIQ organizations globally, helped secure the mandate of the United Nations Independent Expert on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, expanded the U.N. General Assembly resolution to include gender identity, and co-founded the U.N. LGBTI Core Group. She has provided expert opinions to governments globally, regional human rights institutions, and U.N. mechanisms, including U.N. Women where she serves as a member of multiple leadership bodies. In its release, OutRight noted that it has long advocated for the position of U.S. special envoy for international LGBTQI rights. First held by now-Ambassador Randy Berry during the Obama administration, the special envoy is the most senior State Department official focused on the full and equal inclusion of LGBTIQ rights in US foreign policy. OutRight noted the important message the Biden administration sends in countering lesbian invisibility by appointing a lesbian to this role. “At a time when democratic institutions are under attack by authoritarian forces and the dangerous antigender movement, LGBTIQ people globally need the U.S. to invest in stronger LGBTIQ movements everywhere. As with all government officials, OutRight will look forward to holding the new special envoy accountable,” the agency stated. OutRight board co-chair Aalap Shah stated that the organization is prepared for the leadership change. “OutRight today is a formidable organization that is deeply attuned to the diverse needs of LGBTIQ people around the world,” Shah stated. “We have a clear vision, robust programs, a skillful deputy executive director, experienced staff, and a strong Board of Directors. We will continue to fight as part of the global human rights movement. Nothing will slow us down in our pursuit of human rights for LGBTIQ people everywhere.” Maria Sjödin is OutRight’s deputy executive director who is expected to fill in during the interim. Stern’s departure date has not yet been set.t

Hymn of the Republic,” as Baird emerged, accompanied by his caregiver, from his bungalow. Outside his home, Baird was presented with a certificate by gay District 8 Supervisor Rafael Mandelman, who represents the Castro. “Unlike a lot of these I give out, this one was signed by all the members of the Board of Supervisors,” Mandelman said. Mandelman continued, reading from the commendation, that Baird “forever changed” the perspective of the labor movement on the matter of LGBTQ acceptance. “Be it resolved that the San Francisco Board of Supervisors extends its highest commendation and appreciation for Allan’s activism and service to the City and County of San Francisco,” Mandelman concluded. The San Francisco Labor Council gave another commendation to Baird, followed by Dan Bernal, a gay man who is the district office chief
A
bout a hundred people from the LGBTQ and labor communities gathered in San Francisco’s Castro district to kick off Pride weekend June 25 by honoring straight ally Allan Baird – a lifelong neighborhood resident who was instrumental to the cause of queer equality in unions. In 1973, Baird took charge of a union strike against Bay Area distributors, including the Coors Brewing Company. Baird reached out to his neighbor, gay future Supervisor Harvey Milk, to build a coalition. Coors also had a 178-question employment application form, as Nancy Wohlforth explained in 2017 on the International Brotherhood of Teamsters’ website. “One question demanded: ‘Are you a homosexual?’ If you answered ‘yes,’ that terminated your application,” she stated. “Another demanded ‘Are you pro-union?’ If you answered ‘yes,’ that terminated you, too.” Gay activist Cleve Jones, a friend of Milk and Baird who organized the afternoon salute, recounted the tale to the assembled crowd at Market and Castro streets at noon. “We got Coors beer out of every gay bar in North America,” Jones said to cheers. Even after Teamsters Local 888’s boycott of Coors ended in 1975, Baird continued to work with Milk – both against the anti-LGBTQ Briggs initiative in 1978 that would have banned queer people and their supporters from teaching in California’s public schools, and for LGBTQ equality in the labor movement. For a time when American labor was often a bastion of social conservatism, Baird’s coalition-building did not go unnoticed.

Terry Beswick, left, and Cleve Jones spoke during a rally in the Castro June 25 saluting longtime ally and union member Allan Baird. Jones is holding the original bullhorn Baird gave to Harvey Milk years ago.
“When the neighborhood changed, he embraced the change,” Jones said of Baird. Terry Beswick, a gay man who is the executive director of the GLBT Historical Society, also spoke. He brought the original bullhorn that Baird gave to Milk, which Milk gave to Jones, and which Beswick presented again to Jones. “This bullhorn was put on exhibit in [Washington] D.C. as part of [the Smithsonian’s] pandemic exhibit – before the current [COVID-19] pandemic – to show the role it played in fighting the AIDS epidemic,” Beswick said. The crowd marched to Baird’s bungalow in the Castro, where Jones presented him with the bullhorn.
Baird, now 89, thanked Jones for taking the initiative to put the event together. He recalled seeing Jones at the screening of the film “Milk” at the Castro Theatre in 2008. “I wanted to congratulate Cleve, but he couldn’t talk,” Baird recalled. “He was crying so much. He loved Harvey, and Harvey loved him.” During the march to Baird’s home, Jones led chants of “long live Allan Baird” and “long live Harvey Milk.” Milk, along with then-mayor George Moscone, was assassinated by disgruntled ex-supervisor Dan White in 1978. Members of the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus led the crowd in an old labor anthem, “Solidarity Forever,” to the tune of “The Battle

of staff to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco). “Speaker Pelosi could not be here today to celebrate Allan but asked me and my colleague, Kevin Ortiz, to bring a special certificate to Allan today,” Bernal said. Reading from Pelosi’s letter, Bernal said, “your leadership, alongside Harvey Milk, helped forge collaboration between the labor and LGBT communities.” “You have fought to raise the voices of LGBT working people,” Pelosi stated. “Best wishes for a wonderful day of celebration.” It was hard to hold back the tears for many in the crowd as Baird thanked his caregiver, and spoke about threats he faced in the labor movement for fighting for social justice. One time, Baird said, a man put a knife to his stomach. “I didn’t give a damn,” Baird said resolutely. Baird recalled Latino organizers Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta before paying tribute to his late wife, Helen. “She was a strong lady,” Baird said. “Her and her brother owned a bar – believe it or not – in the Castro district in the 1950s and 1960s at Market and Laguna. She told me about different women entering the bar and didn’t know what was going on because they were kissing and hugging. She treated them terrific, and from that point more happened.” Baird concluded his remarks, but called the crowd to attention one more time to give a word of encouragement to the trans community. “I want the trans people to know I support them 100%,” Baird said. “They’ve had a hard time of it, been fighting hard and finally are winning a couple of fights. I hope they hang in there.”t

California adds 5 states to its banned travel list N
early a third of the country will soon be off limits for California state employees to travel to on the taxpayer dime unless their trip is deemed essential, such as sending emergency assistance in response to a natural disaster. The travel restriction come August will cover 17 states that have enacted anti-LGBTQ laws since 2015. Monday, June 28, on the 52nd anniversary of the Stonewall riots that kicked off the modern LGBTQ rights movement, Attorney General Rob Bonta added Arkansas, Florida, Montana, North Dakota, and West Virginia to the Golden State’s “nofly” list. Four of the states all enacted laws specifically targeting transgender youth athletes, while North Dakota repealed protections for LGBTQ university students. The travel restrictions to Florida and Montana take effect July 1 and will be official on July 8 for West Vir-
ginia. The ban for Arkansas kicks in on July 29 and for North Dakota on August 1. Their addition to the travel ban list had been expected, as Bonta’s office told the Bay Area Reporter at the start of Pride Month that he intended to “continue to implement AB 1887 and push back against LGBTQ+ discrimination.” Bonta was among the state Assembly members who adopted Assembly Bill 1887 back in 2015 that banned state-funded travel to states that discriminate against LGBTQ people. Authored by gay Assemblyman Evan Low (D-Campbell) and signed into law by former governor Jerry Brown, the restriction on travel covers government workers, academics, and college sports teams at public universities. “It is heartbreaking, truly heartbreaking to see the expansion of the list,” Low told the B.A.R., adding that he draws “zero pleasure” from having to attend news conferences like

Monday’s. “This is about a statement of values.” Announcing the expansion of the banned travel list at the GLBT Historical Society Museum in the heart of San Francisco’s LGBTQ Castro district, Bonta called the passage of the anti-LGBTQ laws in the quintet of states “part of a recent dangerous wave” of such bills being introduced in statehouses across the country this year. As of June more than 250 antiLGBT bills had been introduced in state legislatures, with at least 95 specifically targeting the rights of “transgender Americans,” said Bonta, who noted his announcement was coinciding with the date of the uprising against police harassment by the patrons of the Manhattan gay bar. Their actions kicked off the wider fight for LGBTQ rights in America. “That same fight remains alive and well in this country,” said Bonta. Joining Bonta was San Diego resident Ryland Whittington, 13, a transgender eighth grade athlete, and his mother, Hillary Whittington. An ice hockey player who said he was missing his water polo practice in order to attend the San Francisco news conference, Ryland said his “being transgender is just a small part of who I am.” Thankful that he has never been told he couldn’t play on a sports team in his hometown, Ryland said he also knows he is “lucky to live in California. I am lucky to have friends and family who support me.” To the lawmakers supporting legislation that restricts students like him to only participate on sports teams based on the gender they were assigned at birth, Ryland said he and other trans youth “just want the same rights as everybody else.” Gay state Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) lashed out at his legislative counterparts, mostly Republicans, who are drafting and supporting such laws and the Republican political consultants advising them to do so. “It is outrageous,” said Wiener. “These are just children trying to live their lives.” Two of the more popular states for groups to hold their gatherings and sporting competitions in – Texas and

Florida – will now be on California’s banned travel list. State officials and college sports teams have found ways to get around the travel prohibition by having alumni associations or other groups pay for their travel costs to attend athletic matches or conferences in the banned states. State employees can take time off to attend conferences or other events in the banned states but must pay out of their own pocket for their travel there and other related expenses. Low told the B.A.R. he not only has had to decline to attend events in the states on the list but also has taken to social media to ask other attendees to cancel, such as when a tech conference was held in Austin, Texas a few years back. “This is about values and about the impact of having a conversation like this,” said Low, who noted the travel ban law also protects state employees from being sent to states where they could be discriminated against. Just as her own family is now avoiding travel to the states on the banned list, Hillary Whittington told the B.A.R. she hopes other Californians, whether they work for the state or not, will also refuse to go to those states until they repeal their anti-LGBTQ laws. “I feel like we should all follow suit,” she said. “I would love to see all Americans restrict their travel from these places.”
Whittington also called on the U.S. Senate to pass the Equality Act, a federal comprehensive LGBTQ rights bill that passed the House earlier this year. President Joe Biden has pledged to sign it into law, but it remains stuck in the Senate due to Republican opposition. Its only hope of being passed is if 10 GOP Senators join with Democrats to overturn a filibuster of the bill, or if Democrats get rid of the filibuster; most observers don’t see either happening. “We need the Equality Act to be passed,” said Whittington. “This is insane we are dealing with this in 2021.” When governors of other states enact anti-LGBTQ laws, it is up to the office of the California attorney general to review them to see if it triggers placing those states on the no-fly list. At the moment the 12 states on California’s list are Alabama, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Texas. West Virginia is being added due to Governor Jim Justice, a Republican, in late April signing into law House Bill 3293, which bans transgender girls and women from participating in sports at the elementary, secondary, or post-secondary level consistent with their gender identity. State-funded travel to Florida is being banned due to Governor Ron DeSantis (R) signing similar legislation into law June 1. Montana is joining the list because Governor Greg Gianforte (R) in May also signed a trans youth sports ban into law. In April he had also signed into law Senate Bill 215, which LGBTQ advocates contend is an expansive religious refusal bill that could grant a license to discriminate against Montanans and visitors, including LGBTQ people, people of faith, and women, across a wide range of goods and services in the state. North Dakota’s inclusion is because Governor Doug Burgum (R) on April 19 signed into law House Bill 1503, which permits student groups at colleges, universities, and high schools to discriminate against LGBTQ students. 50 years in 50 weeks: 1983: Ross appointed to bridge board
B
ay Area Reporter founding publisher Bob Ross was appointed to the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway, and Transportation District Board of Directors. Our March 3, 1983 article noted that Ross was the first openly gay person named to the district by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, which appoints several of the directors. The vote was 10-1, with board President Wendy Nelder in opposition, which LGBTQ political observers took as a move against the community. The article quoted
Nelder as saying she would dissent, but she did not offer a reason, other than to quip that the B.A.R. stated that Nelder’s father, former San Francisco Police Chief Alfred J. Nelder, “bought the election for me.” The elder Nelder later served on the Board of Supervisors, followed by a stint on the police commission. Ross went on to serve on the bridge board for many years, including as its president. To view the issue, go to https://archive.org/details/ BAR_19830303/page/n3/mode/2up

flag, and received 473 signatures. Another, launched by San Francisco resident Joel Sierra, urged the Pride Philadelphia flag be the replacement, and it garnered 696 signatures. In a Guest Opinion following up to that editorial, Castro Merchants President Masood Samereie stated that “we would support any community effort to erect an additional flagpole or some other installation in a significant location in the neighborhood to fly flags that symbolize the diversity of our LGBTQ+ residents and visitors, and would use any influence we have with the city to push this through.” That is now what appears to be happening. “We also see, hear, and acknowledge that there is a real desire by some members of the Castro community to continue to fly the rainbow Pride flag,” the merchants stated June 23. “Hundreds of thousands of gay, bisexual, trans, and queer people in the United States died of AIDS while activists – many of whom themselves succumbed to the epidemic – fought, pleaded, lobbied, petitioned, marched, and protested (and continue to do so all over the world!) while carrying this flag and its predecessors, all designed by Gilbert Baker.” The Baker flag came about when late gay supervisor Harvey Milk had urged Baker, a gay artist, to design a symbol for the 1978 parade. With the help of his friends Lynn Segerblom, who now lives in Southern California, and James McNamara, who died of AIDS-related complications in 1999, Baker came up with a rainbow flag design that had eight colored stripes, with one version also sporting a corner section of stars to mimic the design of the American flag. Baker would go on to reduce the number of colored stripes to just six and turned the rainbow flag into an international symbol of LGBTQ rights. He died unexpectedly in 2017, and the foundation created in his name recently donated a segment from one of the first rainbow flags that flew in front of San Francisco City Hall during the 1978 Pride parade to the GLBT Historical Society Museum in the city’s Castro district, where it is now on public display.

He also enacted SB 289 that allows medical providers to deny care to LGBTQ people and House Bill 1570, the first law in the nation that prohibits physicians from providing gender-affirming health care to transgender minors no matter the wishes of their parents or if such care is deemed to be medically necessary. The office of San Francisco’s city administrator keeps a similar list banning taxpayer-funded travel for
Tina Valentin Aguirre, the manager of the cultural district, stated in an email that the district had no comment. The Gilbert Baker Foundation confirmed via email that it is not responsible for paying for or maintaining the current flag at Castro and Market streets above the Castro Muni Station. The flagpole itself was dedicated on November 7, 1997. Since then the business association for the neighborhood has overseen the use of the flagpole and replacement of the flag each year, normally paid for by proceeds from the Castro Street Fair, normally held the first Sunday in October, and other donations. In 2000 the leather community successfully petitioned to have the rainbow flag be replaced by the leather flag and flown the week leading up to the annual Folsom Street Fair in September. Eleven years later the merchants group agreed to fly the bear flag over Presidents Day weekend in February to mark the end of the International Bear Rendezvous event after a 17-year run. When local organizers launched a smaller get-together in 2012, Castro Merchants (then the Merchants of Upper Market and Castro) agreed to again fly the bear flag. The 20-by-30-foot flag has stood at half-staff less than a dozen times over the years to mark the passing of a significant member of the LGBTQ community. Requests to lower it to mark the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and to fly the transgender flag led to heated debate over how the flagpole should be regulated and who should control such decisions. The merchants group tried to address the issue by adopting a policy in 2012 for how community members could make requests to either lower the rainbow flag or fly other commemorative Pride flag designs. But it ultimately decided to no longer replace or alter the oversize rainbow flag and keep it at full staff 365 days a year. More recently making the flagpole a city landmark has been floated. While the office of gay District 8 Supervisor Rafael Mandelman has told the B.A.R. it’s receptive to the idea, no formal request to start the landmarking process has been submitted to city officials.t non-essential trips to states that have adopted anti-LGBTQ laws since 2015. It also outlaws city departments from contracting with businesses located in those states. The city also now bans its employees from using taxpayer dollars to travel to states that restrict access to abortion services. Thus, 24 states are now on San Francisco’s list, with Montana expected to become the 25th state to be added to it. Due to having restrictive abortion policies Arkansas, Florida, North Dakota, and West Virginia have all been on San Francisco’s banned travel list since January 1, 2020. They should now receive a double asterisk marking to note each state has enacted both anti-abortion and anti-LGBTQ laws.t

Good first step by UC Regents E
arlier this year, gay state Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) introduced Senate Bill 379, which seeks to ensure that the University of California only contracts with medical facilities that allow the UC staff in those settings to provide gender-affirming and reproductive health care, even if the care centers are religiously affiliated. “This legislation will expand access to health care for LGBTQ people and will begin to end stigma,” Wiener told us back in February when he introduced it. “I think a lot of us have strong opinions about major hospitals refusing to provide gender-affirming care and reproductive health, but this isn’t even about that. This is about a public university entering into contracts where UC physicians are prohibited from providing care to our community. That’s just not acceptable.” With Wiener tabling his bill until next year as he works to build up support for it, activists ratcheted up the pressure on the UC Regents to address the contracts. Last week, they adopted a new policy that retains them but requires the hospitals, such as Roman Catholic-operated Dignity Health, to let UC physicians perform those procedures when patients can’t be transferred safely to another hospital, as the San Francisco Chronicle reported. It’s a good first step. “The Regents’ action today is a very positive direction for UC’s affiliation policy,” Wiener stated after the June 23 vote. “It has the potential to significantly expand access to reproductive and gender-affirming care and to ensure UC physicians can exercise their own professional judgment in providing care. I look forward to seeing the fully developed policy, but today’s action is a positive step forward.” The Regents’ proposal was spearheaded by chair John A. Pérez, a gay man and former state Assembly speaker. This is a prime example of the importance and effectiveness of LGBTQ representation on bodies such as the Regents. “We should have greater ability to serve more patients but in a way that is in compliance with the policy we adopt today,” Pérez stated. “We’re against discrimination.” The Regents approved the change 22-0. UC has contracts with 77 hospitals and other health facilities in the state. It says the

contracts allow medical staff to provide care for 35,000 patients, many of them low-income with little access to hospital treatment. But Wiener’s bill – and the subsequent action by the Regents – will help end stigma. Evan Minton, a trans man, has sued Dignity Health, claiming it was discriminatory in deciding not to perform his surgery. He was scheduled to have a hysterectomy at Dignity’s Mercy San Juan Medical Center in Sacramento. As we reported a couple of years ago, and as Minton told the Regents last week, his disclosure of his transgender status on a routine visit led to the hospital banning his surgery on discriminatory grounds. Not only did the hospital tell him that the surgery was called off because he was transgender, shortly thereafter a hospital administrator also told his surgeon they would “never” do a surgery for a person like him at their facility, according to court documents. An appeal court revived Minton’s lawsuit and Dignity Health appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, which has yet to decide if it will take the case. Equality California, the American Civil Liberties Union California Action, and NARAL Pro-Choice America also issued a statement in support of the Regents’ policy change. “Chair John Pérez’s amendments are a positive step toward addressing the concerns of advocates, students, and thousands of Californians who have been clear that everyone deserves com-

prehensive, evidence-based care that is free from discrimination,” the organizations stated. “We are glad that the Board of Regents took it upon themselves to hold the UC Health system to stronger standards for their affiliation agreements.” The next step is for UC President Michael Drake and the Regents to complete the policy change ahead of final approval of its language in 60 days, the three organizations stated. Under the proposal, new contracts are allowed only with health care providers that offer their services to all patients, without discrimination, Pérez said at the meeting. It would not require the hospital’s own staff to perform all medical procedures, but would allow UC personnel at the facilities to do so. For its part, UC Health told us earlier this year that it “strive[s] to promote practices that maximize equitable access to health care, and agree[s] strongly that all Californians should have access to comprehensive services without interference.” But it was clearly concerned about Wiener’s legislation, which we hope will pass out of the Legislature next year if it is still needed. Gay Assemblyman Evan Low (D-Campbell) told us earlier this year that since the UC system receives some $9 billion in state money, it “owes all taxpayers the best care possible.” “We are seeing reproductive and LGBTQinclusive care continue to be limited across the country – and that’s a major problem,” Low stated. “We will continue to fight to make sure public health systems do not enter into contracts with health care facilities that subject providers to dangerous restrictions. It’s a no-brainer. We as leaders need to protect patients who need care, and that’s what this bill does.” Wiener told us this week that he’ll be keeping an eye on developments. “If the final UC policy is consistent with the outline the Regents adopted, we’ll consider dropping SB 379,” he stated. “I’ve always said that if the Regents address the issue on their own, that could make the bill unnecessary.” The Regents should finalize the policy change they unanimously approved last week. We’re seeing too many instances of religiously-affiliated groups trying to steamroll over other rights, including those of LGBTQs and women.t
Communities can now provide input for CA redistricting process by Isra Ahmad

ecause “We the People” should select our representatives and not the other way around, the independent California Citizens Redistricting Commission, or CRC, was established in 2008 by citizen initiative. For the CRC to draft fair and representative congressional, state Senate, state Assembly, and Board of Equalization district maps, we need communities to tell us about themselves. We also need census 2020 data, including the number of congressional districts allocated to California (“reapportionment data”). Due to delays in receiving data from the United States Census Bureau, communities of interest will have more time to identify where they are located, how they are connected, and why it is crucial to be represented in the same district. Traditionally, states receive redistricting data by March 31. This year, because of delays in collecting the data due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the census bureau has announced that it released the reapportionment data by April 30 and will release the redistricting data by September 30. Under the California Constitution, the CRC is mandated to submit its final maps to the secretary of state by August 15 in each year ending with one. The six-month delay in receiving the census data would make it impossible for the CRC to meet this mandate. On July 17, 2020, in Legislature of CA v. Alex Padilla, the California Supreme Court ruled that the CRC should have until December 15, 2021 to submit its final maps due to the delay in the release of the census results. The court further ruled that if census re-

sults are received after July 31, 2021, the CRC’s December 15 deadline is to be extended on a day-for-day basis. The CRC is working to develop a timeline that ensures it has adequate time for significant public input in the process and the review of draft maps while enabling the state to implement the 2022 elections effectively. While the commission waits for census data to begin drawing district maps, we are taking the time to educate communities about the redistricting process and are taking communities of interest input online, which will help us identify community boundaries. This new tool is meant to increase participation in the redistricting process and is available for all Californians to use. The CRC is committed to creating an open, accessible, and transparent process for ALL Californians. To achieve this, we need to hear from your community through our community input process. Communities are groups of people with strong connections. Those connections can be cultural, economic, geo-
graphic, or social. Given the various types of community, individuals can belong to more than one community. For instance, a group of people who fish in Lake B and who are concerned with keeping their lake free of pollution could identify themselves as a community of interest. So can the LGBTQ community. We invite you to talk with your neighbors and others in your communities to identify what makes your community special. What is your community’s identity? And what issues bind you together? The CRC will use community input along with the census data to draw the lines for up to 176 districts – approximately 52 congressional districts, 40 state Senate districts, 80 state Assembly districts, and four state Board of Equalization districts. We invite you to share your communities’ stories and locations through our Community of Interest Tool (https://drawmycacommunity.org/), where you can electronically submit a map and tell us about your community. If you prefer paper and pen, we will be distributing a paper community of interest tool to complete and return to the commission. We are currently collecting Communities of Interest information from Californians directly. ith $35,000 from San Mateo County and donations from community supporters, the new CoastPride Community Center in Half Moon Bay surpassed its fundraising goal of $75,000 and plans to hire a part-time administrator to help oversee the LGBTQ facility on a one-year contract. Located in a prime spot in the coastal city’s downtown district, the LGBTQ center officially opened its doors June 1 and launched the fundraising drive to help support its operations. The all-volunteer run group CoastPride launched in August 2019 with the goal to not only bring services to LGBTQ residents between Pacifica and Pescadero but also to open its own center. At the request of Supervisor Don Horsley, who represents the coastal communities, the Board of Supervisors unanimously voted June 29 to award CoastPride the money from the county’s Measure K funds. The countywide half-cent sales tax extension passed by voters in November 2016 supports essential services, facilities, and local needs. “June 30 is really the end of Pride Month, so it is really appropriate to be bringing forth this item,” Horsley, who attended the center’s ribbon-cutting ceremony, said Tuesday. “The dedicated volunteers and board at CoastPride have grown the organization over the last two years and they are making services available and accessible to a more diverse coastside community.” The new LGBTQ facility has drawn widespread support on the Peninsula from local leaders and business owners, school administrators, faith-based groups, and other nonprofits. San Mateo County Sheriff Carlos G. Bolanos sent the center a letter of support earlier this month. He wrote that his office “stands with CoastPride in representing all who are fortunate to live or visit the Coastside. We celebrate the people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and expression and welcome them here.” As the Bay Area Reporter noted in a story about the newest Bay Area LGBTQ community center in its June 24 Pride issue, it was a needs assessment that San Mateo County was conducting to better serve LGBTQ coastal residents that led to the formation of CoastPride. In a phone interview Horsley told the B.A.R. that he had a staff person present at the meeting and had pledged to lend his support to the leaders of CoastPride when they formed the organization and began laying the groundwork to open a dedicated facility to host their programs and services. “This is an opportunity for me to make good on a promise to be a help,” said Horsley of the county’s funding allocation. The CoastPride center is the second LGBTQ community center in San Mateo County, as there is also the San Mateo County Pride Center

in San Mateo that opened in 2017 and also receives county funding. But with it located “over the hills,” as coastal residents refer to the northernmost section of the Santa Cruz Mountain range they have to drive over to reach the county’s bayside cities, the San Mateo center is not accessible to everyone. Having the CoastPride center located in the heart of Half Moon Bay provides a space most people on the coast can easily access, particularly seniors, youth and those without a car. “For young people, it is not really easy to get into a car and go over the hill,” Horsley noted. CoastPride co-founder Jenny Walter thanked the supervisors for their financially supporting the LGBTQ center as it works to expand its hours and programming. “On behalf of the CoastPride board I am extremely grateful to all of you for your consideration of this resolution,” said Walter, who is bisexual and, with her wife, Deb Hedger, raised the couple’s now 18-year-old daughter Jessie in Half Moon Bay. “Without your work in establishing the LGBTQ commission and all of our work trying to establish the Pride Center in San Mateo County, we just wouldn’t be here today opening up the CoastPride center.” Walter, who served as a co-chair of the county’s LGBTQ commission, stressed to the B.A.R. that the money from the county and that raised through public donations will only allow the new LGBTQ center to hire someone on a part-time basis for 12 months. The CoastPride board will need to continue raising funds in order to extend the person’s employment and increase their hours. CoastPride had set an initial operating budget of $55,000 for its first-year in operation. The center, located in a two-story building at 711 Main Street, is currently open from 2 to 6 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and from noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Governor Gavin Newsom still has to sign off on the budget before the funding is finalized. In 2019, Wiener secured $1 million in state funding for the controversial project that calls for a revamp of the public parklet at the corner of Castro and Market streets so it provides an improved memorial for the late gay San Francisco supervisor who was assassinated in 1978. The Friends of Harvey Milk Plaza group has cycled through a number of architectural consultants since the effort to redesign the space launched in 2017. Costs for the renovation have been pegged at around $10 million, with the bulk expected to come from private donors. Detractors of the plan have argued a far less costly cosmetic upgrade that maintains the current design of the space could be undertaken instead of demolishing portions of the plaza, which they argue should become a city landmark. ed, “As a longtime resident of the Castro and a gay man, I see Harvey Milk Plaza as an important community gathering place, and a way to remember Harvey and his contributions to our city and to LGBTQ
t
rights. Harvey Milk Plaza will be a special memorial and space for San Francisco, and I am proud to support its design and construction.” The funding was part of more than $17 million Wiener secured for various projects in the city, including $1.7 million for the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus’s Na-
tional LGBTQ Center for the Arts on Valencia Street and $4.2 million for a San Francisco meth sobering center. “These programs, nonprofits, parks and plazas are so important to the fabric of our community, and it is truly an honor to champion their causes in the Senate,” stated
Wiener in announcing the funding allocations.t Web Extra: For more queer political news, be sure to check http://www.ebar.com Monday mornings for Political Notes, the notebook’s online companion. This week’s column reported on the swearing in of the members

ast week, Vice President Kamala Harris made her first trip to the U.S.-Mexican border to address the root causes of why people flee their home countries and migrate to America. Visiting young girls at a border facility she commented, “Immigration cannot be reduced to a political issue. We’re talking about children. We’re talking about families. We’re talking about suffering.” Director Heidi Ewing, director and co-writer, of the new film I Carry You With Me (Te Llevo Conmigo), would undoubtedly agree with Harris trying to put a human face on such a contentious problem, since she attempts to accomplish a similar goal in her new hybrid movie. Ewing, known for her documentaries (Jesus Camp; Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You), has based her first narrative feature on the real-life experiences of a gay couple’s dramatic story of homophobia, love, illegal crossing over to the U.S., and undocumented life in New York City which she encountered while eating at their restaurant. She has created a tender, frustrating, sporadically agonizing, and heartbreaking film that has wisdom to impart on this dire and bitterly divisive subject. It is Puebla City, Mexico in 1994. Ivan (Armando Espitia) is a gay man, separated from his wife with a young son, barely making ends meet by working long shifts as a busboy/janitor at a restaurant. A graduate of a culinary school, he longs to be a chef, but the owner is reticent to give him a chance. Ivan must remain closeted, for if his wife knew he was gay, he wouldn’t be allowed to visit his son. Frustrated with his life, along with his childhood friend Sandra (Michelle Rodri-

guez), he seeks refuge in an underground gay bar, where he’s immediately attracted to Gerardo (Christian Vazquez), a graduate student/teaching assistant from a well-to-do land-owning family in Chiapas. Before long they begin a passionate affair. But Ivan’s wife discovers the romantic relationship and since he won’t be able to see his son, tired of facing bigotry, and desiring to mount a career as a chef, he decides to move to the U.S. He begs Gerardo to accompany him but he declines, wanting to establish his academic career and fearing “the place that destroys people with loneliness.” Instead, Sandra will join him for the harrowing journey across the border. Ivan naively thinks he will automatically be hired as a chef in a kitchen, send back money for his son, and then return to Mexico a success, but instead he can only find work wash-

P
ride 2021 has drawn to a close with some high-profile comings out splashing across America’s TV screens. Among them, trans actor Isaiah Stannard, 16, who stars on NBC’s Good Girls where he plays Ben Marks, a transitioning teen, came out as trans at 12. But this week he opened up about being trans, speaking about femininity as a trans man and “taking space” in People magazine’s Pride series. Stannard did a Q&A with the magazine and his mother, Kristin. He spoke about attempts to binary block trans people and said he was feeling more relaxed about who he was. He credited some trans TV for helping with that self-expression. “I feel a lot more comfortable expressing myself in different ways. I used to not wear pink or paint my nails or do certain feminine things that bring me a lot of joy now,” Stannard said. He explained that, “Watching Euphoria and Hunter Schafer’s character Jules spoke to me
a lot. I just thought it was really beautiful and encouraged me to just kind of continue disregarding the boundaries of gender and expression.” Thanks for all the celebs coming out and modeling authenticity for not just our LGBTQ youth, but for folks who have been closeted for years, and just coming out now in their 40s, 50s and beyond. It is never too late to be your true self. Remember that Pride is a celebration, but living your best life is a gift and the truest form of self-care.
Motherland: Fort Salem
Witches have been an ever-popular TV trope since the 1960s hit series Bewitched. But the queer witches of Freeform and Hulu’s new series Motherland: Fort Salem are witches for now, in this dystopian coronavirus moment. Motherland, set in a fictional near-future America, follows the witches of Salem, led by General Sarah Adler (Lyne Renee), who made a pact 300 years ago with the nascent colonial government to save their lives by agreeing to
ing cars and delivering meals for a restaurant. Eventually, Ivan will become a celebrated chef and own his own restaurant. Gerardo misses Ivan terribly and eventually chooses to join him in New York. And his journey is treacherous as well.
Time after time
The film is nonlinear, operating on three timelines, jumping abruptly between them, which can be jarring. Ewing flashbacks to traumatic childhood scenes of Ivan wearing his sister’s quinceanera gown and make-up, crushing his father with disappointment when he discovers him. Gerardo’s sadistic father takes the crying child to a cornfield in the middle of the night, threatening that “men like him, get killed,” leaving him there to find his way home. The point made is that
use their powers to benefit the country--in perpetuity. Their daughters and their daughters’ daughters would be the heirs to a paramilitary witch force with supernatural powers. These witch warriors have grown up in “matrifocal” enclaves, devoid of men or men’s influence, pedagogy and oppression. The witches’ role is to protect the country from terrorists--foreign and domestic. Motherland: Fort Salem follows Abigail Bellweather (Ashley Nicole Williams), Tally Craven (Jessica Sutton), and Raelle Collar (Taylor Hickson), young witches training to fight on the frontlines for their country. These are the gender-nonconforming women of our wannabe future. They’re smart, cunning, strong and powerful. They are built to heal as well as fight. Their powers are multifaceted, and so are their desires, which include Raelle’s lesbianism. The witch as metaphor is striking in Motherland: In a society that others women, these women have embraced their otherness and turned it into a dynamic strength. In an interview last year, Williams said, “I love the female empowerment in this show. We want other women to be empowered from our show, and we want to tell them that they can be anything they set their mind to. You have a voice.” Watch season 1 on Hulu, season 2 on Freeform.
Free Britney
Britney Spears hasn’t been able to fully live her own life for 13 years, trapped in a court-sanctioned conservatorship. Britney was forced into the conservatorship in 2008, when her mental health struggles and fight with fame were playing out in the tabloids and on late night TV. We wrote here then about how only CBS’s Craig Ferguson stood up for her at that time. He spoke about how he was 15 years sober and what his life choices looked like at 25. Ferguson called out his fellow late night comedians. And noted that what Britney was going through wasn’t joke-worthy at all.
it’s dangerous to be gay in Mexico, especially later when Ivan and Gerardo are attacked by straight hooligans on an empty street. Ewing then switches gears to documentary mode, with a shaky hand-held camera cinema-verité style, with current-day real-life Ivan in his 50s riding a subway as he narrates his poetic thoughts out loud. This interlude occurs periodically through the film to little effect, disrupting the flow of the more engrossing romance courtship section. Only in the final segment of the movie –when Ivan reflects on his accomplishments, the severe price he had to pay, leading to a stunning conclusion– will this genre-bending realist approach finally yield dividends. We start to understand what is being carried per the film’s title. See page 15 >>
Those same comedians and tabloid shows are all suffering from collective amnesia now, commiserating with Britney as she cries out to get her life back. We all knew Britney was living a restricted life, we just didn’t know what unmitigated hell it was. After Britney’s explosive testimony at a conservatorship hearing in Los Angeles on June 24, we know now. The same tabloid TV shows that were active participants in her landing in this ongoing trauma are now using her for voyeuristic headlines again. What a horror of a life Britney has been trapped in--from forced medications to forced contraception to forced six or seven day work weeks. She’s 39 years old, but not allowed to get married, have another baby, which she wants to do, or even get new cabinets for her kitchen. Women in Saudi Arabia finally got the right to drive. Not Britney. Britney makes a huge amount of money, but she’s not allowed to spend it. She can’t even reject new dance moves in a show without being put on more medication. She described being forced to work with a fever and being forced onto Lithium after she refused to do a double show. She said the medication made her feel drunk. Though not millionaire performers like Britney, these personally imperiling and restrictive aspects of conservatorship are what a couple million disabled and mentally ill Americans are also forced to endure, many of them LGBTQ. Brava to Britney for speaking out in detail about how this happens and how harsh her life as been. Framing Britney Spears, a documentary by The New York Times that first debuted in February, examines what the public might not know about the star’s court battle for control of her estate–and her own life. You can watch this searing and heartbreaking look at the star and her life on Hulu or YouTube. It’s absolutely gutting and one of the most misogynist exposés in recent memory.t

As in the cases of Atwood and Piercy, gay writer Felice Picano, of the legendary Violet Quill (along with Edmund White, Andrew Holleran and others), is well known for writing both prose and poetry. In Songs and Poems (cyberwit.net), Picano’s first collection of poems since 1977’s The Deformity Lover and Other Poems, he incorporates older and more recent works in the book, separated into two distinct sections. Opening with a couple of personal essays before moving into her poetic voice, Funeral Diva (City Lights Books) by Pamela Sneed movingly expresses her experience of her 1980s, New York City coming of age, including the effect of AIDS on the black queer community, as well as issues encompassing police brutality, queer See page 15 >>
A Dog’s Tale by David-Elijah Nahmod

n his new book, A Golden Retriever and His Two Dads, author Dan Perdios, a gay man with limited hearing, remembers his late service dog Willy. For many years Perdios and Willy were inseparable, each depending on the other. Then one day Perdios meets James, a film producer, and the two tried to make a go of having a relationship. The men were actually introduced to each other by Willy, but there was one problem: James wasn’t a dog person and didn’t seem to want Willy around. For Perdios this could have been a dealbreaker. But then James became involved in an independent film to be shot on Cape Cod over a period of six weeks. Perdios and Willy accompanied him on this trip. In a short, sweet tale (the book is a scant 75 pages), Perdios recounts their journey. Perdios works on the film as an assistant, and the three of them build a bond, gradually becoming a family. The bond between Perdios and Willy runs deep. Perdios has lived with AIDS for many years, and in fact lost his hearing as a result of the disease. “Willy is all about living,” Perdios said in an interview. “At the time I adopted him, he represented a new lease on life. Starting over. With the advent of new treatments, instead of planning for death from AIDS, I had to plan my life.” Perdios indeed owes his life to Willy. One day the smoke detectors

In recent years, poet and writer Margaret Atwood has become better known for her fiction, especially her 1985 novel The Handmaid’s Tale and the acclaimed and awardwinning Hulu series that it inspired. But Atwood is also a poet with 15 poetry collections to her name. You may now add the sixteenth, Dearly: New Poems (Ecco), to that list, her first book of poems in more than a decade. Like Atwood, Marge Piercy writes both prose and poetry. In On the Way Out, Turn Off the Light (Knopf), Piercy’s first new book of poems in five years, she touches on subjects near and dear to her, including “language, nature, old age, young love, Judaism, and our current politics.”

in Perdios’ house went off, but he couldn’t hear them. It was Willy who alerted Perdios to the fact that a frying pan in his kitchen was on fire. “I had forgotten that I was cooking something,” Perdios said. “He saved my house and my life.” The adventure on Cape Cod is vividly written and comes to life in Perdios’ deftly written pose. The author recalls the six-week film shoot, during which time everyone on set falls in love with Willy. Willy eats up the attention. There’s also a meeting with Perdios’ parents, who live near the film set. Perdios has always had a troubled relationship with his parents due to his being gay. But much to his surprise, mom and dad not only accept James, they seem to like him. A weekend off from filming gives Perdios, James and Willy time to go exploring around the vacation city of Provincetown. They have a wonderful time, sampling the area’s many seafood restaurants and romping on the beach. “This non-fiction novella allowed me to explore all the adventures of that time period, the early days of my relationship with my husband James and Willy,” Perdios said. “Without being restricted about the subject matter that I really love, Cape Cod. This format also allowed me to include more scenes about the filmmaking, which for me was fascinating having never done anything like that before. And it turns out many readers agree.”
On Golden paws
Perdios’ had another reason for writing the book. “When Covid began, I decided to write something that was uplifting and entertaining,” he said. Perdios succeeds in this goal. After the making of the film is completed, he, James and Willy stay on in Cape Cod for a honeymoon. This section
of the book is short and sweet and serves as a delightful remembrance of Willy. The book becomes a true love story, an easy read in which Perdios exposes his feelings, his challenges, and his simple joy at finding a husband who comes to love Willy as much as he does. The book concludes with a sample chapter from Rescued by Goldens, Perdios’ next book. In that book he’ll be chronicling his memories of all three of the golden retrievers he’s had in his life. In the sample chapter, “Rescuing Morgan,” Perdios and James meet Morgan, the dog who followed Willy. Morgan is a bit of a challenge at first, but with a little patience and understanding, he mellows and becomes a cherished member of the family. Perdios acknowledges that his core audience is women, the LGBTQ community, and dog lovers. On his ‘Rescued by Goldens’ Facebook page he shares details about his life with Morgan and his other dogs, his life as a gay man living with health issues, his time as an AIDS activist, and his relationship with James. “The feedback that I’m getting from many readers is that they found the book very intimate and honest,” he said. “It affected them. One reader said she cried when she read it. Everyone seems captivated by different sections, whether it’s my health issue or making a movie.” Though there might be some who find the book’s title a bit eye-opening. “It’s hard to believe that in 2021 that a title like A Golden Retriever and His Two Dads can still be considered provocative,” Perdios said. “I guess I’m glad to still be pushing boundaries.” The book is available in paperback and Kindle editions.t rescuedbygoldens.com/ facebook.com/rescuedbygoldens/

rights, and the through line to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Inheritance (Alice James) is the breathtaking full-length debut collection by New Orleans-based, DCnative Taylor Johnson. The addition of Johnson’s voice to the LGBTQ+ poetry landscape feels essential, and poems such as “Lincoln Town Car,” “Club 2718,” “Pennsylvania Ave. SE,” “Hunger” and “Trans Is Against Nostalgia” are proof of that. Natch (City Lights), by queer, Oakland-based poet and educator Sophia Dahlin, is another outstanding full-length debut collection. Dahlin’s distinctive voice is at turns erotic (“Tandem,” “Legroom”), observant (“JK,” “Poem About Seedless Tomatoes That Aren’t Fruit”), experimen-
tal (“Dally,” “Fuck You”), and never humdrum. Originally published in 1978 as a chapter in a limitedrun festschrift (defined as “a book honoring a respected person, especially an academic, and presented during their lifetime”) by the late Elie Wiesel (who died in 2016), the narrative poem The Tale of a Niggun (Schocken Books, 1978/2020), which now includes illustrations by Mark Podwal and an introduction by Elisha Wiesel (son of Elie Wiesel), is based on an actual World War II event. Winner of the Gival Press Poetry Award, judged by C.M. Ewing is at her best when contrasting the dangers of being gay with the menacing uncertain threat of deportation, as well as the isolation and painful sacrifices suffered by undocumented aliens, as if exchanging one type of oppression for another. The fear and loathing experienced by emigrants is not so different from the fear and loathing LGBTQ people sometimes undergo here.
Where the film stumbles a bit is that the two decades in-between when Ivan leaves Mexico until today is mostly left blank. It’s as if overnight he became an acclaimed chef and owner of award-winning, fourstar restaurants. Surely there must have been ordeals to reach such fanfare, but the audience must fill in the gaps themselves. Also, the movie is primarily centered on Ivan and the more defiant Gerardo’s trials fade into the background, despite his story being

just as compelling as Ivan’s. Espitia and Vazquez are terrific, exuding warmth, intelligence, vulnerability, and sensuality especially in their love affair scenes. One surmises the jerky changes in time, mood, and location (cinematically from pastoral Mexico to gritty New York) mirror the cultural and emotional breaches the characters are forced to navigate. The film excels in revealing, from an undocumented perspective, the steep cost paid for being uprooted, even if Ivan and Gerardo have realized the stereotypical American dream. Yet Ewing is not-so-subtly asking the audience to redefine what the American dream means in 2021 and if any non-citizen can really achieve it. And how does one measure success today? But even if their lives are not picture perfect, Ivan and Gerardo are resilient, sustained by their mutual love for each other. The bittersweet I Carry You With Me mostly triumphs because it feels emotionally accurate and captures the poignancy and complexity of an often-anguished no-win situation. One can only hope Vice President Harris and the legislative branch can devise a plan so other undocumented people won’t have to endure the same indignities, perils, and psychic toll that plague Ivan and Gerardo.t sonyclassics.com/film/ icarryyouwithme/

Instead, let’s gander at a full-page June 23 interview with Tom Ammiano, gay comic and later, politico and memoirist (Kiss My Gay Ass, at local bookstores). Writer Scott Treimel’s ruminative feature focuses on Ammiano’s life and stage style in an advance for a show at the Valencia Rose. Ammiano notes how The Punch Line and other straight clubs wouldn’t book him or other out LGBT stand-up acts. “Ammiano wants to reclaim our right to be sissies,” Treimel writes in the informative yet not funny article about one of our town’s funniest people.
