BROCK OF AGESd
Local crooner hits it big on The X Factor • by Jim Provenzano

ason Brock’s life story could be used as material for a Tammy Wynette song, or perhaps one of his own songs. The vocalist, know for his soulful performances at local cabarets and benefits, is also working on songwriting. That is, when he’s not appearing on Fox’s The X Factor. After a rousing audition held at The Cow Palace, Jason Brock’s performance was featured on the premiere episode of the singer competition show. Having just completed taping the show’s Boot Camp episodes, Brock couldn’t say just where he stands in the competition, but the signs look good for the 34-year-old. As we walked and talked on sunny afternoon in San Francisco, several people recognized Brock and chatted him up. Since moving to San Francisco, Brock’s life, his singing in particular, has opened up big time. He seems to have settled into accepting and developing his talent, and his life. As a kid, though, things were quite different. “My family moved a lot, chasing God and money,” said Brock, who described his father as a ‘religious entrepreneur.’ His family’s non-denominational faith was charismatic, said Brock. “Speaking in tongues, but no snake-handling,” he clarified. “We did do the bit where the pastor touches you and you fall over. I never fell over. I could never buy it.” School choir marked his first secular singing. But, said Brock, “My family was always in church, so there was always music. My parents were also amateur singer-songwriters. We always had music in our house.” His sister and two brothers are also musicians. “We were encouraged to be musical, but more as Christian musicians.” His sister is a Christian musician. “I, obviously, am not. My whole life I’d been listening to nonChristian music, even though I was told not to. It was like a secret.” With limited television-viewing as well, Brock’s appreciation of Anita Baker, Paula Abdul and other pop vocalists became a hidden passion. Seeing Tina Turner’s “We Don’t Need Another Hero” stood out for the young singer. “That is the first song that ever touched me in an emotional way, and I realized that music could be so powerful.” After attending college for a semester, Brock, then 18, was also depressed, aching to burst out of the closet, and living with his recently widowed grandmother in suburban Texas.

“I was trying to be a good Christian, thinking it would make me happy, because that’s what I’d always been told,” said Brock. Instead, he says, “I just let it go, and decided to do what I wanted to do to be happy, rather than what I was told to do. But I was poor and getting harassed for being gay.” After moving to Dallas, Brock began what he called his “hedonistic surge” of coming out, going out, and celebrating his life, sometimes to excess. “For a few years, I’d been doing every drug I could find. I was really unhappy and reckless.” His first visit to a gay bar “was weird at first.” Brock traveled a lot for his job with a medical supply distributor. He met his first boyfriend via a website, then took a risky plunge. “I moved to Tucson only weeks after meeting him online,” said Brock. “I know; crazy. I’m a very daring person. I took a Greyhound bus from Georgia, where I was traveling all the way to Tucson. I didn’t even think of the fact that you can’t shower on a bus. I had a pile of those little hand-wipes. I don’t know if it worked. My ‘new boyfriend’ looked…quite different than I expected. I thought, ‘What have I done? This is so weird.’ But I was there, I just had to get used to him.” Determined to make a go of it, Brock sobered up, worked on making a ‘happy family life,’ which he had for a year and a half. “I did a lot of volunteer work, and that opened my eyes to a new sort of life. I didn’t feel as reckless or unstable as I had before.” But when that relationship fell apart, Brock started having anxiety attacks, spurred on by his break-up, which pivoted on a disastrous car accident where a motorcyclist was killed.

semesters of music school. Working a day job and living with a new boyfriend, Brock began performing more often, including singing the National Anthem at Tucson’s 2004 Gay Pride celebration. That performance led to a local DJ inviting him to host a show at IBT’s, a gay bar, which he hosted for a year. “It was my first paying gig as a singer!” A two-year guest-starring role in a local musical called Homo Neurotic (“very appropriate!” Brock joked), plus more Pride shows, led to the 2009 Arizona Gay Idol competition, which he won.

“It was horrible,” said Brock. “Our vehicle flipped over, and we almost died. And then, my boyfriend left me a few weeks later for the nurse who we met at the hospital. He moved out of our apartment, and I was traumatized. Holy crap!” Alone in Tucson, Brock said he had to adjust yet again, and still struggles with anxiety. But that’s not a problem onstage. “I don’t usually get anxiety during or before a show.” He wrote songs about heartache and break-ups, played his guitar, and performed at a few small karaoke competitions. “Music was kind of in the background,” he said of his efforts, which included a few

Cabarets and clubs make beautiful music • by Josh Klipp
n the 1940s and ‘50s, San Francisco – particularly the Fillmore and North Beach – pulsed with so much beautiful jazz it became known as the “Harlem of the West.” Billie Holiday sang at the New Orleans Swing Club on Webster at Post. Ella Fitzgerald blew the roof off The Long Bar on Fillmore between Post and Geary. Louis Armstrong listened to Charlie Parker at Jimbo’s Bop City at 1721 Fillmore, a popular after-hours jam joint (now Marcus Books). In fact, celebrity guests at Bop City had their names painted on chairs, and the A-list included Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, George Shearing, Miles Davis and an armslength more. And while all good things come to an end (including the closure of popular North Beach joints Pearl’s, Moose’s, and Enrico’s in the last decade alone), San Francisco jazz never died. Like any force of nature, it simply reinvented itself, albeit perhaps a little harder to find. Look carefully and you’ll see it. Like Frances Hodgson Burnett’s Secret Garden, it exists behind vine covered walls, obscured in whispering fog, floating through open windows like melancholy notes from Chet Baker’s horn at the old Black Hawk. So don your fedora, pull over your trench coat, and venture into unexplored neighborhoods, through unopened doors, across new or ancient thresholds and into the fresh sounds of San Francisco jazz. Once you discover your new favorite old haunt, raise a toast to all who’ve come before: a silent invocation to the once and future Harlem of the West. Biscuits and Blues: The staircase down to San Francisco’s blues club at 401 Mason Street is a porthole to the deep and gritty South – complete with Southern cuisine, but minus the rifle racks and Duke Boys (sorry guys). and her Red Hot Skillet Lickers, Friday November 23; and blues singer John Nemeth, Friday November 30. While neither has any overt connection to queer folk, this is some of the sexiest music you’ll ever hear, no matter who you love. Bliss Bar: A neighborhood bar with queer-friendly swank in the heart of Noe Valley, escape the 24th Street stroller derby and wind down your weekend with class. Bliss’ Sunday Jazz series features some loverly Bay Area talent. Check online listings. Every Sunday afternoon 4:30-7:30pm, $10 cover, 4026 24th Street. Blush! Wine Bar: No need to wander far for smooth vintage and stringed jazz at this niche conveniently located at 476 Castro. Every Thursday features the Avatar Ensemble, 7-10pm, no cover. Cheers! Le Colonial: Tucked away at 20 Cosmo Place, this intimate spot features Vietnamese food. In a throwback to days gone by, proper attire is requested. Monday 7-10pm is Le Jazz Hot, featuring The Hot Club – San Francisco’s brand of rare gypsy jazz. It’s a cozy destination for proper queers who like their jazz a little plucked and twisted. Comstock Saloon: First, pay homage to San Francisco’s queer past with tapas at Bocadillos, 710 Montgomery Street, site of the old Black Cat Bar where the echoes of José Sarria may serenade as you nibble. Afterward, amble past the old jail that once held brave and screaming queens, and head over to the Comstock Saloon at 155 Columbus. Enjoy a nightcap worthy of the swoon-iest Barbary sailors as soft jazz floats down through the rafters, alighting onto a wooden bar top steeped in memory. Condor Club: The country’s first topless bar bears photos of Carol Doda that would make a Castro queen blush with pride and envy. This little corner of San
Francisco history also has live music Friday – Sunday, 3-6pm, no cover. And the best part – the band stand features a stripper pole. (Indeed, I’ve worked it while mashing up Sinatra’s “Lady is a Tramp” and Beyonce’s “Single Ladies”). Be brave. Check out my band, Josh Klipp and the Klipptones, Sunday November 18, 3-6pm, corner of Broadway and Columbus. It will be worth your trip to the heart of North Beach. (FYI, the tops start flying off at 6pm.) Preservation Hall West: Promising to bring New Orleans-style jazz to San Francisco, there is no jazz or blues scheduled in November. But stay-tuned as this new venue may yet live up to its name. 777 Valencia.

Rassella’s: Located at 1534 Fillmore in the heart of San Francisco’s historic jazz district, this now nearinstitution has featured the Bay Area’s own Grammy Award-winning and nominated artists Tracy Chapman and Ledisi. Enjoy authentic Ethiopian cuisine and bask in the whispers of Fillmore’s ghosts while SF’s best play live. The online calendar is out of date, but the music never is. Revolution Café: For the queer hipster set, direct your attention to the Revolution Café, located at the corner of 22nd and Bartlett just across from the Make Out Room and scene of Stay Golds of yore. A budding relationship with another boyfriend, this one from San Francisco, led Brock to move to the Bay Area. Although that didn’t last, his ex, also a musician, helped him get a few small gigs at jazz clubs and bars. Open mic nights at Rosello’s Jazz Store led to his own night hosting a talent night when Dianthe “Dee” Spencer (also a music and dance instructor at SF State) encouraged him. That led to performing at Martuni’s, where he eventually began hosting Tuesday nights. “A paid gig, performing every week; that’s what I needed,” Brock said with a smile. Bay Area fans of the Richmond/Ermet AIDS Foundation have also enjoyed Brock’s more full-stage performances at the Rrazz Room and the Herbst Theatre. “I got to sing with all these stars! It was amazing.” What locals know, and what instead was portrayed on the show as a ‘surprise,’ is Brock’s ability to belt out songs with conviction enough to wow an entire arena full of listeners. The X Factor judges, including Britney Spears and Simon Cowell gave Brock high marks, calling him “amazing” and “lovely.” But what’s it like to be grouped in with some true amateurs? “There were some who, well, I was like, ‘Good for them for trying,’ said Brock with polite restraint. “I didn’t think they would make it. But some people who make it past the first round, I was surprised. Maybe the judges see something I don’t. A lot of people think they can sing, and they’re going to find out, eventually, whether it’s from the judges or the public. If you get far enough on these shows, that means you can sing.” Brock agreed that perhaps some of the less-talented were included just for ratings. But the hyped-up ‘Boot Camp’ sessions were not exaggerated. Said Brock, “We were up all night, getting maybe two hours of sleep. This was when I was trying to be my very best. But I wasn’t alone. It’s not that I was restless. There was just no time. We spent hours trying to work on a song. There’s so much waiting involved with a TV production.” That Brock was given his own mini-segment that acknowledged his being gay was interesting. At first the episode got more media coverage for deleting an entire segment from another audition, where another gay man tearfully came out to Spears. Since then, he has made it into the final 24 finalists, one of six finalists in the over-25 category. “I think I’m the only out gay one on the show,” said Brock. “In a way, it was nice that they showed that I’m gay, but the intro made it sound like I was delusional!” Brock had been asked to describe his ‘dream show,’ which he did, in detail, including a “glitter explosion” finale. Brock carried it off (without the glitter). The segment of his audition, posted on YouTube.com, has already been viewed more than 2 million times. “I get Tweets and praiseful comments from all over 8 BAR★TAB • bartabsf.com • November 2012

the world; so much love. It’s so nice,” said Brock, who enjoyed one fan’s description of him as a combination of Elton John, Adam Lambert and Jack Black. Yet of course, the online world isn’t without its haters, a few of whom, among the 5,000 comments, focus on Brock’s being gay in derogatory ways. Yet, Brock lets it slide, knowing the majority appreciate him. “There are still people who say, ‘Oh, he’s got a great voice, but he’s too gay.’ There are enough people saying what could affect my ability to compete. But part of it is the opportunity to use this for issues, like marriage equality.” Brock’s bi-national relationship prohibits common benefits straight couples enjoy. So, what is Brock doing to corral this new success? Having recently visited his new boyfriend, who lives in Japan, Brock is eager to harness his X Factor fame. “First: no more tech support day job. I’m not going back to that,” he said. “I want to go entertainment all the way.” Brock hopes for a record contract, and a career in television. “I see myself perhaps as a talk show host, one who sings. I’d like to do that.” While he’ll drop in at his old haunts like Martuni’s, Brock is also aiming for larger venues. “Depending on how far I get, I’m going to use it as much as I can. I don’t think I presented anything that was too outrageous or not really me. When I see myself on the show, it’s like, ‘Okay, that’s me.’ It’s cool.” ✸ Watch The X Factor Thursdays, 8pm on Fox. seven nights a week, never a cover. Recommended performer: Howell Devine, a gritty rural blues trio with farm boy looks. Sunday, November 4, 8:30-11:30pm. Rouge: Smothered in red velvet and dripping chandeliers, this spot at Broadway and Polk is best avoided on weekends unless you enjoy your martini with a side of drunken Marina-ites en masse. But Thursday promises Happy Hour 5-10pm, Nick’s Crispy tacos, and live jazz 8-10pm. The Rrazz Room: Located in Hotel Nikko at 222 Mason Street, this sophisticated but intimate venue’s downfall is its embarrassment of tantalizingly queer-angled artistry. A favored venue of local and famed chanteuse Veronica Klaus, and jazz and R&B bands and vocalists, it’s a little pricey, but performances are worth the coin. Recommended: Lady Rizo, Wednesday November 15. I caught her live at NYC’s The Darby, Prince’s afterhours haunt. Do not miss this show. Also: November 11-21, Wesla Whitfield – purist old-school class. Savanna Jazz: The walls of this joint are covered in images of jazz greats. Live music features an incredible six nights a week. I can’t help but recommend my own group, Josh Klipp and the Klipptones, Friday November 2, 7:30-11:30pm, $8. I’ll be the eye candy, but the real showstopper is co-vocalist and Bay Area novitiate, Emily Day. 2937 Mission Street. Top of the Mark: A Judy Garland haunt and famed for its 100 Martinis menu, this spot opened in 1939 and holds its share of San Francisco lore. While much of the entertainment features funk, pop, or smooth piano jazz, local jiving and wailing rousers Stompy Jones start your three-day weekend every Thursday night, 7:3011:30pm, $10. 999 California Street.

Yoshi’s (San Francisco): Elegance and marquee entertainment dominate 1330 Fillmore Street, an address shared by the Jazz Heritage Center. Pre-show sushi is optional. Recommended performer: Sony Holland. This stunning chanteuse once sang on Fisherman’s Wharf and is now a Bay Area favorite. She and her silken voice grace the stage Sunday, November 18, 7pm, $20. The Oakland Yoshi’s also books great local and touring jazz and R&B talents. Zingari Lounge: This Italian restaurant, wine bar and jazz club with lush views is located at 501 Post Street. Recommended performer: Amanda King, a straight-ahead jazz chanteuse who has entertained at the Castro Street Fair and whose style has been compared to Ella Fitzgerald and Ann-Margaret. Tuesday November 6, 7:30-11:30pm, no cover. What better way to celebrate the president’s re-election? ✸

ovember means elections. They’re not always filled with donkeys and elephants supported by super PACs finagling to deceive. Sometimes they’re beefcake elections that stimulate the libido and satisfy the soul. Sometimes they pit Gay Bar v. Gay Bar. During the 1970s the California Motor Club held its popular fall charity carnival to elect Mr. CMC in the Marine Labor Union building on Fremont Street, fondly known as Seaman’s Hall. The CMC Carnival wasn’t the only beefcake election in town. In 1975, the Acme Brewing Company of San Francisco sponsored the Acme Man ‘75 contest. Their souvenir program featured 30 shirtless hotties sponsored by various gay bars. From that Acme Man election, bar owners made money, Acme beer sales in gay bars increased, and the Society for Individual Rights (S.I.R.), a gay community-building organization, reaped the benefits of the ticket sales. The following year, however, Acme no longer wanted their beer brand coupled with the “fag” bar brand. Threats of a boycott canceled Acme Man ’76. Once upon a November, Allan Lowery, my boss and owner of the Leatherneck bar at 11th Street and Folsom, asked me to get out my Nikon and take a few shots of Max Morales for a Mr. CMC poster. Over a few lines and a couple of beers in his office we discussed the details. “How much should we spend?” Allan said. “On the posters?” I said. “No! How much should the Leatherneck kick in to make Max Mr. CMC?” “That’s how it works?” I said. I’d envisioned individual carnival-goers stuffing their monetary votes into their candidate’s, ah… ballot box, sort of like tipping the stripper boys who dance on the bar. It sounded a lot more fun then some Super PAC buying the election. “It’s all for charity,” Allan said. So on a Sunday in November, I walked through the second floor entrance doors of Seaman’s Hall into a world Lewis Carroll could never have imagined down any rabbit hole. The place was packed. The music was loud. Its beat matched the rhythm of heavy sex. Mr. CMC candidates were onstage, seducing the crowd. I stuffed my measly monetary vote in Max’s cardboard ballot box and headed for the bar. I ordered a beer, a long-neck Oly. The air was heavy with the ripe aroma of male sweat, pot, and poppers, all overlaid with tobacco smoke and booze. A roar from the crowd turned my head. One candidate, his muscled, oiled torso strapped into a 30 BAR★TAB • bartabsf.com • November 2012

leather body harness, dominated the stage. He played to his audience of cheering leatherfolk, air-fucking to the edge of the stage and back. Then back again, at the edge of the stage, he popped his well-endowed tool from its black leather toolbox and sprayed his sacred juices over those below. The crowd went wild! Men surged forward to lap the precious liquid from sweating chests and bellies. I edged my way down the packed stairs to a raw first floor man-cave. As if staged for a Pier Paolo Pasolini film, a stand-up orgy stretched before me. Booths around the perimeter offered services for hire, for charity. One provided free manicures prior to four-bit fistings. I bumped into Allan. “Did Max win?” I said. “No,” Allan said. “Neither did the air-fucker.” Big bucks had backed the winner. After cruising the crowd, getting a good buzz on, and having been sexually satiated several times, I left, a happy man who had done his duty and cast his vote, for charity. Each year the CMC crowd grew. Rental fees increased. Lawsuits were feared. Insurance became required. The CMC Carnival was last held at Seamen’s Hall in 1978. ✸ Copyright 2012 Jim Stewart.
