South Asian Nightclub Brightens Mid-Market District

he newest club is opening up,” goes the old Nina Hagen song, her caustic anthem to 1980s New York nightlife. This time, the neighborhood that was filmed to look like New York’s East Village (for the film Rent) is the locale for ‘the newest club,’ the gay-owned Club OMG! From its robin’s egg retro blue décor to its circular dance floor and five-projector visuals, the new venue combines intimacy with a club-like ambiance. Co-owner Rakesh Modi said that he didn’t realize how difficult the whole process would be. “Getting the alcohol license transferred, getting all the permits,” he said. “It was quite a challenge. But we’re open, finally!” Started in early September with a few soft openings, Modi and co-owner Paresh Shah have been putting the pieces together for what he considers the first gayowned South Asian-focused nightclub in San Francisco, if not the entire U.S. The club had an enthusiastic turnout even before it opened. When the bar wasn’t quite ready last month, the party was moved to a neighboring bar, where South Asian lesbians, gays and pals danced and enjoyed themselves. Now that Club OMG is open, along with the regular evening events, Modi said they’ll be focusing on corporate events for nearby tech companies and other businesses. Some nights, they’ll be open early at 5pm or 8pm, depending on the nights and bookings, or earlier Happy Hour events. A bar stocked with quality brands, specialty ginger and saffron martinis, margaritas and other cocktails, along with a revamped décor, make the trip to mid-Market a worthy adventure. With weekly Saturday Bollywood nights, the popular music form will get unique takes by guest and resident DJs. “We want to have a presence in San Francisco,” said Modi, when asked about his inspiration for starting the nightclub. His business partners owned a bar in the East Bay, and wanted to bring a South Asian LGBT presence to the scene. “We also realized there was no club that had Bollywood music,” said Modi. “We wanted to see something for ourselves. There’s a large growing LGBT South Asian presence in the city, yet there is no gay Bollywood dance club in the country. So we’re the first. It’s also popularizing the music and the culture in a fun way.” Affiliated with the South Asian LGBT group Trikone for years, “also the first organization of its kind in the country,” Modi reminded me, he’s made some of the club’s upcoming events fundraisers for the nonprofit. But he sees Club OMG! as extending a further aspect. “It’s also a way to integrate and assimilate the gay and non-gay south Asian communities. Ideally, we want to have Bollywood nights where everybody can enjoy themselves. That was the incentive to start. Everybody should feel welcome.” Despite this message, some South Asian LGBTs are still cautious about being out, even in liberal San Francisco. Other local Bollywood parties, most of which take place in the South Bay, are not gay, Modi said.

Bollywood music’s blend of cultural music influences should appeal to those interested in world music and uplifting dance beats. “Bollywood music today is more of a good mix of salsa, Arabic; a blend of cultures,” said Modi. “We also want to realize that there are people who don’t know it and we want to familiarize them.” Bollywood dance classes on Sunday evenings are in the works. Led by fitness instructor Satish, the basic moves will be taught to newbies. The Club OMG events add to the already popular Non-Stop Banghra dance nights held at Public Works (moved from The Rickshaw Stop after their popularity increased). “That’s a good sign that people are going to try it,” said Modi. Along with the Saturday Bollywood parties, and

Sunday dance lessons, Modi mentioned other events, including a grand opening weekend September 27 through 30. Thursday’s weekly Wish starts off with DJ Drewbad spinning Top 40 and hiphop from 9pm to closing. September 28 is the nearby Sixth Street Art Walk, and the club will open early (3pm), with a fashion show by designer Hector Manuel, and $3 drink specials. The weekend includes new events Spicy; Friday nights with DJ SSHaaN playing Bollywood hits. On Wednesday October 24, Fathom Events, in conjunction with Turner Classic Movies, presents James Whale’s Frankenstein (1931) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935) together on the big screen in pristine, digital prints. Whale was the first (as far as we know) gay director in Hollywood history to come out, and Bride was one of his coming out films. The script is chock-full of witty gay innuendos that were hard to spot in 1935, but stand out front and center to modern viewers. The evening includes a filmed interview with Sara Karloff, daughter of Boris Karloff, the legendary horror star who played the monster in both films. house-breaded chicken option. Fries, sweet potato tots, and delicious fried pickles round out the bar eats. Truck’s kitchen is generally open from 4-9pm, but Fridays the burgers start hitting the grill at noon and meat party doesn’t stop until 9pm. The monthly Swallow party features a rotating menu of gourmet goodies made by Ben and Dino, the titular tarts behind Two Tarts and a Stove (facebook.com/ eatups). A recent menu included a Southwestern flatbread with chorizo and cilantro cream, and the everpopular cheeseburger egg rolls. Swallow happens on third Wednesdays from 5pm-10pm. The next Swallow will be happening on October 17. On the second Friday of the month, the Tarts also invade Truck’s kitchen, turning out affordable and delicious pub food during Rarebits, a monthy rotating DJ night where the selectors change every 15 minutes. In keeping with the “rarebits” theme, the eats are Englishinspired dishes, including a banger sausage on a soft bun with caramelized onions and tomato relish, classic fish and chips, and of course, a take on Welsh rarebit, an aleinfused cheese sauce served over hearty toasted bread. The next Rarebits happens on Friday, October 12. Over at Lookout (3600 16th Street), the kitchen turns out wings, sliders, quesadillas and other bar faves six nights a week. On Tuesdays, Lookout’s kitchen gets taken over to the folks from Down to Grub, who turn it with southern-style favorites from 6-10pm. The menu changes weekly, but you can often find ribs and downhome specialties like DTG’s shrimp and grits, with mustard greens and grilled peaches. The fried chicken sandwich is another standout, topped with honey-jalapeño slaw and a spiced aioli. For something a bit more sophisticated, check Page 12

veryone knows about the big food names in San Francisco. But in addition to our beloved collection of well-known eateries, there are tons of places off the beaten path –or even not really on the path in the first place– to get a good plate of grub, usually accompanied by a cold beer or a cocktail to wash it all down. Food trucks are all the rage, but until recently, there hasn’t been a regular spot to find your favorite wheeled purveyors of designer grilled cheese sandwiches and fusion cuisine served in taco form. You used to have to stalk food trucks on Twitter, but thanks to SoMa’s Streat Food Park (Ha, see what they did there?), you can wander down to 11th Street and Division and find a constantly-rotating collection of trucks slinging all manner of tasty eats. It’s reminiscent of the permanent pods scattered throughout downtown Portland, but with less rain and things with birds on them. The Streat Food Park usually boasts at least a half-dozen food vendors, hawking all sorts of tasty treats, from Vietnamese bahn mi sandwiches to handmade popsicles. A recent dinner service featured everything from gyros and made-to-order drip coffees to southern-style BBQ with traditional sides like mac and cheese. Part of the fun of having so many options is putting together a “tasting menu” from a few different vendors. Streat Food Park also features free Wi-Fi, lots of bike parking, a beer garden, and plenty of space to sit down and enjoy. Lunch is served Monday-Friday from 11am3pm, with dinner from 5pm-10pm. On weekends, Streat Food Park is open from 11am-10pm. Also in SoMa, beardy fellas and those who love them have been bellying up for “meaty boy” burgers with all the accouterments at Truck (1900 Folsom Street). There are Gardenburgers for vegetarians, as well as a

out Mugsy’s Wine Bar, a sporadic pop-up wine bar that happens on “occasional” Fridays at El Rio (3158 Mission Street). When Mugsy is in the house, expect affordably-priced pours from urban wineries, and wines made by women and vintners of color. Featured wines are around $7 a glass, and hail from exotic locales as near as Oakland, and as far away as Italy. They pair nicely with the free oysters El Rio dishes out every Friday starting at 5:30pm. mugsywinebar.tumblr.com. On the other side of town, Amante (570 Green Street) is a sleek bar with a lounge-y vibe, and drink names ending in “-tini” that Herb Caen probably wouldn’t approve of. But drinks go better with food, and it’s hard

not to love Chubby Noodle, the restaurant-within-abar tucked into this North Beach watering hole. The noodle dishes are delicious, in particular the Peppered Duck, a seared breast atop a pile of perfectly chewy chow fun with seasonal veggies. Keeping with the “chubby” theme, pork belly fried rice is served with spicy housemade kimchi, and a sunny-side up egg adds even more decadent richness. The organic fried chicken comes in either wing or strip form. It’s brined in buttermilk, and paired with a spicy, creamy sambal sauce for a little bit of a kick. On the lighter end, Chubby Noodle offers small plates that go well with Amante’s libations, including salt and pepper shrimp, Korean-style pork tacos, and tombo tuna poke. Enjoy! ✸

t was Tuesday, October 31, 1978. Halloween. Prop 6 would be on the ballot in a week. It was sponsored by state legislator John Briggs of Orange County and better known as the Briggs Initiative. If passed, it would ban gay and lesbian teachers and staff from employment in the California public schools. We needed money to defeat it. We needed a fundraiser. Hey, let’s put on a show! What could be more American than Mickey and Judy! What could be more patriotic than a World War II USO Canteen Show! I was building a catwalk on which Halloween revelers could strut their stuff in a cavernous two-story building (now gone) near the northeast corner of Market and Castro. “Are you sure that thing’s not going to collapse?” Harvey Milk said, as he nodded at my catwalk. He had just come into the building on his way to his new minuscule camera shop. He’d moved to the building from Castro Street after his election. He didn’t do much business there. He was busy at City Hall. “It’ll be fine,” I said. I finished toenailing the support struts in place. “Some of those queens are pretty hefty. The last thing we need is a disaster,” Harvey said. “Everything’s safe,” I said. We opened when it got dark and the Halloween crowd on Castro grew. Red, white, and blue bunting and American flags decorated the hall. Everything was a dollar. Coffee a dollar. Doughnuts a dollar. A dollar a dance with a pin-up gal, in drag or for real. A dollar a dance with a GI Joe or one of America’s finest officers. The DJ kept the tunes coming. “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B” held court. Disco played second fiddle. From an inside balcony across the back, Wakefield Poole projected onto screens hung from the ceiling slide shows of hot men and scenes from his famous porno-art films Boys in the Sand and Bijou. sang out her famous “God Bless America” from an old black and white Movietone newsreel clip. Two lesbians were dressed as slices of toast, one hung with garlands of peanuts, the other draped in clusters of grapes. They hugged and kissed and became a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Drag queens, Greek gods, and leatherfolk filled the hall. A man dressed as a cock walked hunched over until he saw what he liked, then stood up tall and ejaculated Ivory Liquid. The music stopped. The hall went dark. Damn World War II fuse box! I dashed out the door, fought my way across Market Street traffic, and down Castro to Cliff’s hardware. Ernie was locking up. “I’m sorry we’re closed.” I yelled my tale of woe through the glass door, ending with a vague threat of “hundreds of drag queens” descending on Cliff’s in protest. I got the fuses. The lights went back on. The night continued. “We can all thank Ernie at Cliff’s for coming to our rescue,” I said over the loudspeaker. Cheers went up in the hall. Kate Smith burst out singing “God Bless America” and the “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B” started the dollars flowing again. A week later, on November 7, 1978, the Briggs Initiative was soundly defeated at the polls with over a 58% “no” vote. We felt safe again. Less than a month later, on November 27, 1978, Supervisor Harvey Milk was assassinated in his office at City Hall by Dan White. ✸ Copyright 2012 Jim Stewart
