Watch this first Are you all excited about watching the Olympics this month? Well, there’s something you should watch first. HBO is presenting “China’s Stolen Children,” a poignant look at the kidnapping and selling of some 70,000 babies and young children in China every year, by traffickers exploiting the one-child rule and the “birth permit” requirements – which, of course, the rich are effectively exempt from. “I hope he’s being fed. When it’s training, I hope he’s not getting wet,” a young mother whose 5-year-old boy was grabbed from a vegetable market, tearfully tells an HBO interviewer. Why should you see this film before watching the Olympics? Because, as the Chinese government tries to portray their police state as an enlightened, emerging superpower deserving of hosting the Olympics, it not only turns a blind eye to the daily sale of children in negotiations as casual as selling a pig, but actually punishes

parents who talk to anyone about the snatching of their children off the streets, or even if they hang posters of their missing children. The producers had to film most of the documentary in secluded locations or by hidden cameras. You see, any publicity of this crime would cast a negative light on China, and that can’t be permitted in the People’s Republic, now can it? Not to mention that the “Made in China” goods that fill the shelves of Wal-Mart, your neighborhood 99cent store, and just about every other retail outlet were likely made by these kidnapped children forced into labor, or by prisoners -- political and otherwise -- or by workers lucky to make a dollar or two a day. When it was suggested that he boycott the Games in Beijing because of China’s horrific record on human rights, President Bush said he was just going to the Olympics to enjoy the athletic competition. Bush just doesn’t get it. No surprise there. But we hope you do.

A Time to Mourn, A Time to Rejoice in Coney Island By I. Freidin Bay Currents writer The vibrant community behind the honky-tonk amusement area most people identify with America’s Playground has had reason to grieve the past few weeks but reason to celebrate as well. Coney Island lost a giant when Father Connie Mobley, founder and long time pastor of the United Community Baptist Church passed away. A leading clergyman in the neighborhood, he was active in community affairs and led his flock from the founding of his church in 1971 until health problems forced his retirement in 2002. In 1997, when his son, the Reverend Connis Mobley arrived as co-pastor, the honorary title of “Father Mobley was bestowed on the senior pastor. Survived by his wife, also a pastor who received the title of honor, “ShepherdMother Mobley, his legacy survives in his great works and in his three sons, all pastors, and his daughter. His funeral on July 20, held at the Gospel Assembly, the largest church in Coney Island, saw an overflowing mass of people there to honor his celebrated life. Father Mobley had lived a long and fruitful life but what struck the family of Alma and Bradley Johnson was a parent’s worst nightmare. In the late afternoon of July 26 ten year old cousins were splashing and laughing in the surf when a strong riptide pulled the two youngsters under. Rushing in, the lifeguards were able to pull out the little boy but it was too late for Akira, washed away beyond sight and reach despite all efforts of lifeguards and police. The search went on but there was no sign until three days later when the ocean returned the fragile body to shore, just east of where she was taken. Born on Feb. 28, 1998, Akira Angelique Johnson was a happy, fun loving child who loved to dance and play
baseball. A fifth grader at P.S. 188, she was a good student, well liked by her teachers and classmates. Mourners filled the Gospel Assembly at the funeral, held Aug. 4 to pay tribute to the little girl who had given joy to so many and whose life was cut off way too short. On that same day, there was also cause for celebration, as Coney Island’s own Anthony Killiebrew departed for Beijing to participate in the Olympic Games. A basketball player in high school, it wasn’t long before his great speed was noted and his focus changed to track. Starring in national and international competition, his natural ability and hard work has led to the ultimate honor -- a place on the United States Olympic Team. But as proud as everyone in Coney Island is of Anthony’s accomplishments on the track, they are prouder still of the contributions he has made to the youth of his community. Never forgetting his roots in the neighborhood, he has won many awards and citations for his work in the Anthony Killiebrew Children’s Foundation, and helping youngsters through sports, arts and his annual festival. By the time you read this, Anthony’s place in Olympic history might have already been determined. But whether or not he wins gold in Beijing, he will always be a winner to all who know and love him. After mourning its losses and celebrating its heroes, amid the confusing redevelopment plans, there is reason for hope in Coney Island. The Coney Island United advocacy organization’s primary committee has expanded to include Charles Denson, representing the interests of the amusement district, James Prince of Major Meats, representing the interests of local businesses and, as he always has, the interests of all of Coney Island. They will be working together with Rev. Connis Mobley, Arthur Melnick, Regina Mitchell and Brigitte Purvis.
Coney Island United’s general membership, we hear, is growing, and it can now be found on the web at www. coneyislandunited.org. The organization has a promising agenda, and gives good cause for optimism for all who live, work and play in “America’s Playground. This column will continue to follow Coney Island United and other organizations involved in the redevelopment of Coney Island, pro and con. We mourn and honor those who are no longer with us, as we rejoice in the accomplishments of those who are.

New pizza restaurant -- a kosher island in the Bay By David J. Glenn Bay Currents Publisher Manachem Maximov, 33, has just taken the New York State bar exam, and plans to put up a shingle in Sheepshead Bay as soon as he finds out if he passed it. In the meantime, he’s set up something else – the only kosher pizza restaurant in the Sheepshead Bay, Brighton Beach, Manhattan Beach area. Actually, as far as we know, it’s the only kosher anything until you get to Avenue U. He said he got the idea after visiting Benny’s Kosher Pizza on Avenue M. “I really liked the place,” said Maximov, who had come to the U.S. with his family from the then-Soviet Union when he was 11. “I thought that we needed this in Sheepshead Bay.” So he teamed up with fellow Russian immigrants Gregory Zinger and Benny Asisov himself, and opened a Benny’s Kosher Pizza at 1730 Jerome Ave., right across from the Post Office. There is a surprisingly large number of observant Jews in Sheepshead Bay, Maxmov said. “Now they don’t have to go all the way to Avenue M or Avenue J to get kosher pizza and paninis,” he said. Of course, one can enjoy kosher pizza even if he had a breakfast of ham and eggs that morning; Maximov estimates that his clientele is split about 50-50 between people who keep kosher, and those who don’t. He’s not very worried about competition for non-Jewish customers from all the non-kosher pizza places in the area. “One advantage we have is that we’re open many times when the other places are not,” he said. For example, starting in the fall, he plans to be open late Saturday evenings – after the conclusion of the Jewish Sabbath. Will Maximov continue his labor of love at the pizza place even if he goes full swing into practicing law? “Definitely,” he said. “Why not?”

MO-1 Suzanne Glenn He’ll be fine – but I won’t be Now that Mathew is going away to college, I can’t help but think back to when it all started. I remember when he started nursery school – at only 3 years old. When he walked into the classroom, he didn’t look back – he just said, “Bye, Mommy, I’ll be fine.” He was right – I was the one who was not fine. I was used to having him around all the time. I missed him already. After just a few days of nursery school, he asked if he could call me “Mom” instead of “Mommy,” because he wanted to be more Mom and little Mathew. grown-up. You see, the teachers had put him with the “older” kids – they were 4 -because he was taller than the other 3-year-olds. He made friends with one of the 4-year-old boys who called his mother “Mom.” I guess he wanted to be cool.
That was surprising, actually, because he usually went out of his way to be different. If it was time to play with blocks, he wanted to fingerpaint. If it was naptime, he wanted to play with blocks. Then came prekindergarten, when he had his first stage experience. As part of a class theatrical answer to “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Mathew came out as a detective in the manner of Sherlock Holmes, complete with pipe and an oversized magnifying glass. Soon followed kindergarten; he was very rambunctious, but the teachers put up with him, mainly because he used a vocabulary beyond his age – in fact, they called him ”the little adult.” Now he is an adult – well, almost. And it’s still me who’s a nervous wreck about him starting a new school. But he’ll be fine. E-mail Suzanne at editor@baycurrents.net
BAY FACTOID The original name of what is now Coney Island was the Native American moniker “Narrioch” – “land without shadows,” because its southern exposure keeps the beach bathed in sunlight all day. Dutch settlers called the area Conyne Eylandt, or “Rabbit Island,” since there was quite an abundance of those woodland creatures.

Letter #1
Dear Twins, I’m a 26-year-old male who recently moved into an apartment. The second I arrived, Sara brought over a welcoming cake. Sara and I hit it off right away. She is smart, funny and absolutely beautiful. Although she looks 16, Sara is only 11 years old. She confuses me because she finds little excuses to stop by, like bringing me my paper or asking for help with her homework. Last night, she came over and I was watching TV. She decided to sit right next to me, real close. I could tell, it’s not just me; I know we both immediately felt something. Truth is, I’ve been here eight months now, and I can’t stop thinking about her. My feelings are growing stronger every time I see her. I am a sensitive person and I know my feelings are all wrong, but what can I do about it? -Rob
Kerry says:
Dear ROBbing the Cradle, Adults do not have sexual attraction for children. Ones who do are called pedophiles, and getting help for these individuals is imminent. Sir, your letter sends chills up my spine. So please, I urge you to read this response carefully because you are not acting like a sensitive person; you are behaving like a monster. And you are one left-turn from molesting an innocent child. If you act on your feelings, this child will be ruined for life. And it may take years of therapy trying to right your wrong… if she doesn’t try to kill herself first. Show mercy on that child and get yourself help immediately. Any therapist will help you see that this child is only innocently flirting with you, like little children sometimes do. She has no idea that you take her childish ways seriously and that you intend on acting upon it. She will never enjoy what you are planning to do to her, for you are only fantasizing. Realize, too, that it is a lose-lose situation, because not only will this destroy her but also you will go straight to jail. There is still time to rectify this, and some hope to save you if, and only if, you call a professional therapist and make an appointment right away. You do not want to be brandished a child molester.
Jacqueline says:
Dear Rob, If Kerry hasn’t hit you over your head then I know who will. A therapist. Please don’t take this lightly. I urge you to seek guidance immediately. Sara has a crush on you like some young children do because she looks up to you. She does not desire you in any way. You, on the other hand, are an adult. Your desires for this child need to be understood by you through the help of a professional. Adults (with the exception of a pedophiles) do not have desires for children. And if you act on the “feelings” you are having, you will ruin this child. Please know by seeking professional help, you may enjoy a life with wonderful healthy relationships with other adults, but without it, you will surely spend the rest of your life in jail.
Letter #2
Dear Twins, I have two healthy children ages 7 and 10, and they are terrific kids. The problem is they love sugar and they want it all the time. They constantly whine and beg for it until they wear me down and I give in. I am very healthy myself and try to cook healthy food for my kids, but I just don’t want to push it on them as my mother did to me. Sugar just makes them hyper and unmanageable. And at bedtime they can’t go to sleep. In the morning I can’t get them up and they are cranky and downright irritable. The cycle just keeps repeating itself. I am worn down from badgering them, and I just want to give them whatever they want. Is there a solution? -- Sugar Tooth
Jacqueline says:
Dear Sugar Tooth, Let’s not forget who is the mother and who are the children. You are the boss. The only way kids can walk all over you is if you let them. If it goes in their mouths, you were the one who bought it. But let’s address the sugar issue. Seems to me your kids are addicted. I suggest you wean them off slowly as to forgo any more begging and whining. Fruit is a fantastic substitute for processed sugar – it’s full of vitamins and fiber and doesn’t seem to make kids erratic and hyper. You could incorporate fruit along with dessert at first
(say, berries with vanilla ice cream). Then, eventually, how about a nice bowl of chopped mango? Always have melon or grapefruit with breakfast. I would add bananas to cereal and while you’re at it, make the cereal half sugar-cereal and half a whole grain cereal. For snacks let them enjoy large slabs of watermelon. Replace sugary drinks with flavored seltzer. You can make terrific lemonade mixed with water, ice, lemons and stevia (an all-natural sugar substitute). Keep a pitcher in the fridge. Also, increase the level of proteins throughout the day, as lack of proteins increases cravings for sugar learned that one a long time ago when I was a vegetarian and constantly craved sugar). And absolutely no sugar three hours before bedtime. If they even think of whining about it, they’ll go straight to bed with no dessert at all.
Kerry says:
Dear Toothless, I don’t know. I think the whole idea of forcing your kids to eat healthy is all in vain. They are kids after all. And while I don’t think we should encourage our children by stocking the fridge with junk food, I nonetheless, don’t see any real alarm in this. For the most part, kids adopt

more mature, healthier eating habits as they get older. The only red flag here is if you notice your child treading towards obesity. Then it becomes more about an eating disorder, which can lead to more problems later in life, and less about a little too much junk food. So here’s a suggestion: Perhaps your children would benefit from joining a sports team. This ought to tire them out and let you enjoy some peace and quiet.

Sports Currents New Cyclones short-stop making most of second chance By Patrick Hickey Jr. Bay Currents writer One look at Cyclones shortstop Matt Smith’s uniform after a game, and it’s obvious he’s not your typical ballplayer. In seven games with Brooklyn this season, Smith hasn’t finished a game with a clean uniform yet. Tough, energetic and charismatic, Smith has taken over the starting shortstop role after injuries to Reese Havens and Matt Bouchard, and has filled in admirably, with 12 hits, 13 walks and a solid .377 on-base percentage in 16 games. However, after Spring Training, the gritty 25-year-old found himself without a job. Originally released by the Rangers, Smith was quickly snatched up by the Mets. Ready to prove himself all over again in a new organization, Smith knows what he has to do on the field to get noticed. “My role is to see a lot of pitches and to get on base,” said Smith, who idolized Craig Biggio as a kid and models his game after him. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a hit, error, walk or a hit by pitch.” Finding himself in the nine-hole or lead-off spot for most of his time in Brooklyn thus far, Smith has opened up the eyes of the coaching staff at the plate in his short time with the team.
“He takes a lot of pitches,” said Cyclones skipper Edgar Alfonzo. “He does a lot of little things and gets under the pitcher’s skin. By the third inning, pitchers are tired and our hitters have seen most of their pitches because of his patience.” Playing with the likes of David Wright, B.J. Upton and other major-leaguers during his teenage years, Smith has a wealth of experience and has already shown signs of being a leader. “I was blessed to be around some great talent my entire life,” Smith said. “I’ve played with the best and I have the utmost amount of respect for those guys, and I’ve learned a lot from them. They never treat me like they’re better than me or anyone else they meet. With that being said, I have no problem helping some of the younger guys out because I know everyone needs help at one point or another.” Smith isn’t wasting time this season and is ready to make the most of his time with the Mets Single-A affiliate. “I pride myself in being a gritty player,” he said. “And I never take anything for granted. I was released once and I promised myself to play as hard as I can, for a long as I can. I told myself that by the end of my career, I could look in the mirror and be proud of myself because I did everything I could. “I try and take that mentality into every game I play.” E-mail Patrick at sports@baycurrents.net

How the Coo Bird Got its Colors By Victoria Keller Bay Currents Writer From a Native American folktale Once upon a time, the Great Spirit watched as the birds flew from tree to tree. “Hummmmmmm,” thought the Great Spirit “The birds are big and small, feathered and full, yet I still can’t tell one kind of bird from another.” He looked around at the flowers and delighted in an idea: he would color the birds as the flowers! The Great Spirit announced that on the third day after the new moon, he would give colors to all the birds. When the birds heard this they became very excited. “We will be as beautiful as the flowers,” cried the Jay Bird. “Better than that,” said the Cardinal, “we will be as colorful as the mountains in fall.” The birds of all sizes and shapes came to gather in the trees and in the fields. On and on they talked about the beautiful colors the Great Spirit would give them. One of the birds, named Coo, was very excited. He flew here and there looking at every flower’s color, trying to decide what color he would choose. He couldn’t sleep. He couldn’t stop talking and talking to any bird that would listen. Finally it was the day before the big day. Coo was sitting with of all his bird friends. “I think we should all go to sleep early,” said the Sparrow. “Yes,” said the Jay, “we wouldn’t want to miss getting our colors.” All the birds agreed that going to sleep early was the “Me too”, said me Parrot. right thing to do. All except Coo. He wanted to keep singing and talking. “Now Coo,” said the owl, “you need to get rest so you can be up early in the morning. You wouldn’t want to be late and miss getting your colors, would you? “I won’t miss getting my colors no matter what,” said Coo. “All of you can go to sleep, but I will wait right here for the sun to come up. I’ll be the first in line!” “I don’t now about you, Coo,” spoke the Crow, “but I’m going to sleep now.” “Me, too,” said the Parrot. Soon all the birds were gone. Coo did not want to sleep He felt sure he would be first in line because he would be awake to see the first rays of the sun peek out over the mountains. The morning burst over the mountains to greet the out to get special new day. Every bird in the world set out to go to get their colors from the Great Spirit. Soon the skies and the fields were filled with the beauty of feathered birds. Some of Coo’s friends came by to see what colors he had gotten. When they got there, Coo was snoring away, sitting exactly where they had left him the day before. “Coo...Coo!” called the birds. “ Wake up! You don’t have your colors!” “What...what?” Coo slowly opened his eyes, still very sleepy. “Where are your colors, Coo?” said Owl. “Colors?” said Coo, waking up, looking around at his
friends. Suddenly he realized that everyone looked so bright and colorful. “COLORS!” he shouted. “What time is it? I have to go!” Coo,” said Owl. “I must go now!” Coo shouted, not really listening. “You missed it,” said Blue Jay. “WHAT? That can’t be!” cried Coo. “It’s true,” said Parrot. Coo saw they were right, and began to cry and cry. “How can this have happened to me?” he said tearfully. All of Coo’s friends felt sad for Coo. “I will be the ugliest bird in the world,” cried Coo. “No you won’t,” said the Cardinal, “I will give you one of my beautiful feathers. “I will give you one of my blue feathers,” said the Blue Jay. Each of Coo’s friends gave him a feather. In no time Coo had enough feathers to make him the most colorful bird in the world. He was so happy, and oh, so grateful to have such wonderful friends. No ‘Cabaret’ at Asser Levy Park By David J. Glenn Bay Currents Publisher It would be journalistically exciting if I could say that when I went to the Seaside Summer Concert featuring Liza Minnelli at Asser Levy Park off Ocean Parkway, it was the first time I participated in an outdoor music fest since Woodstock. But since I never made it to that legendary festival in 1969, I’m not able to say it. Instead, I have to admit that the last such concert I went to before Liza, was a neighborhood group at a block party. I think I enjoyed that performance more. It wasn’t that Liza, who was with “special guest” Christopher Cross, could no longer belt out a tune. She could. But it was not the “All That Jazz” or “Cabaret” singer that I, and I assume most everyone else, were expecting. If I hadn’t known beforehand that it was Liza Minnelli, I would not have known it was her on stage. Then there was the whole ambiance of the event. This was no Woodstock. You would think there would be a cheerful spirit among the large crowd in the spacious park on a warm, midsummer evening, but – at least among the dozen or so people I was crammed in among – there was nothing but “Move out of the way, you’re blocking my view,” and “My brother is coming
back to this spot, you’ll have to move.” The friendly rent-a-cops and members of New York’s Finest seemed to revel in saying, “You can’t stand there, keep moving” or “Stay away from the fence.” To top it off, there was the mutual admiration society of local pols headed by Borough President Marty Markowitz, who didn’t let anyone forget that he was responsible for bringing us the current Summer Concert Series, and that within two years the bandshell that he was standing in in his bright white suit, would be replaced by a “new, state-ofthe-art” amphitheater to attract “even more big-name talent to Brooklyn.” This dream-come-true for Marty will cost some $54 million -- which has already been allocated by the city. Yes, the project is supposed to include improvements to the playground and other parts of the park, but $54 million? Never mind that the MTA will soon raise subway and bus fares again. Never mind that many schools, even in the Bay area, are literally falling apart. Never mind that the city’s century-plus-old gas and water pipes are waiting to explode – we need a $54 million amphitheater. And what about the idea of free summer concerts? A spokeswoman for Markowitz told me that the concerts at the new amphitheater would be “free or low-cost.” Of course, “low” is quite relative.
Anyway, thanks, Liza with a Z, for coming to Brooklyn and implicitly lending your support to Marty & Company. Next summer, though, I think I’ll stay home on Thursday nights, sit back, and listen to the original Broadway cast recording of “Cabaret.”

Tech Currents Segway, Meet Winglet By Mordechai Goldstein Guest writer Toyota Motors has announced a new Segway-like scooter – those personal transporters that react to every turn of the body. Toyota’s “Winglet has a tiny body to house its wheels, motor and sensors, and gets up to 3.7 mph. Toyota is testing the Winglet at a Japanese airport ahead of its 2009 expected release. Testing for the Segway in America was done by postal carriers across the United States; the Bronx was included as a trial run location. Scrabulous is the latest killer-application for whiling away the time at one’s PC screen, perhaps bumping old-fashioned Solitaire permanently aside. That is, until Hasbro, maker of “Scrabble, filed a copyright infringement case against the freebie game developer. Scrabulous responded by changing the design and its name to “Wordscraper, while Facebook suddenly clamped down on such applications integrating on its site. FISH FOCUS Don’t count on catching this one! From National Geographic The London Aquarium has a unique species in its collection: robocarp. Computer scientists at the University of Essex in England developed the self-guided robot fish. The designers say it is the smartest such robot yet created —the fish uses artificial intelligence and builtin sensors to avoid obstacles and respond to environmental changes. The fish’s battery lasts for up to five hours, though the scientists hope to one day program it to search for and access a recharging station when it runs low. “This work has many real-world applications, including seabed exploration, detecting leaks in oil pipelines, mine countermeasures, and improving the performance of underwater vehicles,” project leader Huosheng Hu told the Associated Press. The bot, which resembles a oneand-a-half-foot-long (half-meterlong) common carp, mimics the undulating motions of a real fish swimming and turning. Three of the cyber-fish will swim in a tank at the aquarium alongside their living counterparts.

By Mordechai Goldstein For Bay Currents A huge body of fluke, also known as flounder, has taken hold in the Bay, says the crew of the Marilyn Jean, as well as night bassing, with some fish weighing 25 pounds. Larger fluke have finally begun to make an appearance settling into 70-foot water, and porgies and blues have the daytime hours locked up. The state Department of Environmental Conservation has announced the regulations for recreational fluke fishing; the fluke season goes until Sept. 1. Fishermen have been fighting these regulations, which aim for a reduction of the fluke harvest in New York waters by 64 percent to be in compliance with figures collected by the National Marine Fisheries Service. State officials say the alternative is a total ban on fluke fishing. American Sportfishing Association has joined in the fight, with vice president Gordon Robertson saying, “The irony of this threat (of a ban) is that the summer flounder stocks in the Atlantic are at a 40-year high.
