Publisher’s Notebook

Just not the same It’s not easy being a liberal these days. Take the Democratic National Convention that got under way at the end of August. It was 40 years after the legendary convention of 1968. Now that was a convention! You had protests galore. You had a young Dan Rather shouting to police as they led him out of the convention hall (I have to paraphrase here): “Either charge me or get your hands off me!” This new-millennium convention just isn’t the same. Yes, it’s historical, since a black man is the nominee. But where’s the unpredictability, the demonstrations, the who-knows-what’s-going-to-happennext atmosphere? All we have now is a relatively small number of protesters corralled into “free-speech zones” (funny, I thought that under the First Amendment, all of the United States was a free-speech zone). The likes of Dan Rather (and Dan Rather himself ) are no longer there – instead we have self-obsessed news people more interested in their own skybox positions than the positions of the candidates. I’m writing this before Barak Obama addressed the convention. I hope his speech is a good one, because the first

September 1-15, 2008

day was a disappointment. Michelle Obama’s address was predictable and clichéd. As for Ted Kennedy – I’m sorry about his illness, but someone who left a young woman to drown in Chappaquiddick while he cared only about his political life, is in about the same moral position to talk about the direction of the nation as is George Bush to criticize Russia for invading a sovereign country. Speaking of moral standing – or the lack of it – I’m disturbed about recent reports that Barak Obama, while promising to help everyone, has completely neglected his half-brother, who is living in incredible poverty in Kenya. (I can’t say anything similar about John McCain, only because he hasn’t really promised America anything, since I don’t think he expects to even try to repair the damage that Bush has done to us and the rest of the world). So, we’re left with the choice between an energetic yet inexperienced young man who is heavy on platitudes but light on substance, and an aging Washington insider who is likely to continue the failed policies of a failed president. Not that we had a much better choice in 1968. But at least it was more exciting.

Around the Bay Not forgotten

This Sept. 11 marks the seventh anniversary of the horrific attacks on the World Trade Center. As it has done ever since that fateful day, the Brooklyn-Bedford Park 9/11 Memorial Committee has arranged a memorial at Bill Brown Park at Avenue X and Bedford Avenue, with candle-lighting, prayers, and addresses from families of some of the victims. The memorial begins, rain or shine, at 6:30 p.m.

How do you live to be 120? Get to 119 – and then be very careful... Act ually, t wo women in the Bay area seem well on the way to that milestone. Edna Urquhart-Reynolds recently celebrated her 106th birthday at the Menorah Home and Hospital in Manhattan Beach, surrounded by her very extended family and friends. The Jamaican native is one of the longest living residents of Brooklyn, who was independent even into her

100s before moving to Menorah in February 2002. Widowed with no children, Edna was born to Frank and Matilda Urquhart in the parish of St. Thomas, Jamaica, and is the eldest of 13 siblings. A former seamstress, she moved to the U.S. in her early 20s to further her career in dressmaking and to study music and art. Meanwhile, Josephine Ingoglia ushered in her 107th birthday at the Shoreview Nursing Home in Brighton Beach. She was born in 1901 in Palermo in southern Italy, and emigrated to the U.S. with her family as a young child. She married in 1918 at age 17 and moved with her husband to Bensonhurst. She now is a mother of six, grandmother of 14, greatgrandmother of 22, and greatgreat grandmother of four.

There has been much local, national, and even international attention on Coney Island’s Astroland this summer,

because of expectations that this is the last season for the famed amusement park by the sea. But there are now reports, which we couldn’t confirm by press time, that Astroland may live to fight another summer next year. Stay tuned.

By Michael Schlager Special to Bay Currents During one of this summer’s hot, humid evenings, I spent some time in the air-conditioned studios of the New York Reality TV School in midtown Manhattan, filled with people who, for the most part, wanted to become reality-TV personalities. The operating word was, “become.â€? The aspiring stars, mainly in their late teens and early 20s, were surrounded by several veterans of reality TV, including Robert Russell, a producer of many of the top reality shows, and Jorge Bendersky of Animal Planet’s “Groomer Has It.â€? Joining the roster of reality-TV stardom seemed “that much more reachable now,â€? one Brooklyn 20-something told me. “It was a dream, and now I can see how it can transform into reality. I have direction.â€? We started the evening with a physical warm-up, from basic movements of the head and arms blending into dancing around the room – as three camera people pointed lenses and lights at us, whether or not we were ready for our close-up. Richard Galinsky, the school’s director, encouraged us to step outside of ourselves, to explore how others – and the camera – saw us. Non-verbal cues – body language, eye contact, facial expression – could make the difference between “Thanks for coming inâ€? and “Can you come back next week?â€? “Never apologizeâ€? was the rule. No time for blame, guilt, or regrets in the

rapid-fire, strobe-light universe of TV. Each person got a turn to walk in front of the class and be either booed or applauded for how he or she reacted to the given situation. It helped to have a thick skin, but if you didn’t, the experience could give you one. Or not. At one point, a young female student yelled, “I’m not here to take this abuse! and then -- adding, “To hell with this school – she stormed out the door. A friend coaxed her back in, and she spent the remainder of the session sulking in the back. Well, we won’t be seeing her anytime soon on the tube, we all thought. We had to rethink that. It turned out that Galinski had planted her in the group, to show us that we should expect anything during reality-TV tryouts. Actually, a few students were there with no intention of even trying out for a reality TV show – they had signed up for help in reality, period. One young man, in fact, hoped it would help him in his highintensity corporate career. How many who came into the studio with their own mid-summer night’s dream actually will make it? They might find out quickly – immediately after the session, producers from a Los Angeles-based show started taking applications and filming auditions. I didn’t participate in that. I was just resigned to my own reality of work and paying the bills. But it was nice to dream...

Cyclones trio reach All-Stardom With a league-leading 2.98 ERA and 584 strikeouts in only 531 innings pitched, it’s fair to say that every member of the Brooklyn Cyclones pitching staff had an opportunity to make the New York Penn-League All-Star team this season. By the time the eventual selections were made, however, only Brad Holt, Chris Schwinden and Yury Santana managed to garner All-Star honors. It’s still not too shabby. “They all deserve it,” said Cyclones manager Edgar Alfonzo in reference to his entire pitching staff. “But those guys in particular have worked really hard this season. As far as I’m concerned, we have the best pitching staff in the league, and they’re a very big reason why.” The Mets first pitcher selected in the 2008 draft, Holt had some mighty expectations put upon him before the season began and hasn’t let anyone down yet, going 4-3 with a microscopic 1.98 ERA and a league-leading 69 K’s. Humble and modest throughout the season, the likable Holt tried to not make too much of his appearance in the game, but couldn’t seem to wipe the smile of his face. “I figured maybe, but it was wait and see,” said Holt. “I’m having a decent season, but I wasn’t expecting to be anywhere.” While many believed that Holt was a lock to make the team, many of the media were a bit surprised with

Schwinden’s selection to the team, not because of his stats, but because lack of a clear-defined role on the team for most of the season. Second in the league with a minuscule ERA of 1.31, Schwinden has been in the starting rotation for barely a month, after working as the team’s long reliever for most of the season. Nevertheless, Schwinden’s ability to make the most of opportunities has gotten him a deserved All-Star nod. A 22nd round pick by the Mets this season, Schwinden has battled adversity all season-- and it’s paying off. “It was a big surprise,” said Schwinden. “I just barely started in the rotation. I’m excited to be there and it’s a great opportunity to show people what I have.” However, of all the three Brooklyn players selected to the All-Star game, Clones reliever Yury Santana is easily the most intriguing. A converted shortstop, the 26-yearold is making the first All-Star game appearance of his professional career. Originally losing his closer’s spot to Stephen Clyne halfway through the season, Santana has battled back to regain that role and is currently sitting fourth in the NYPL with 10 saves. A fun-loving and energetic player, Santana was thrilled when he found out the news. “I feel great,” said Santana. “This is something I never would have thought about before. I was surprised because there are a lot of guys playing well right now.”

Another roadblock for Lutz

Missing 75 games last season with the Cyclones in 2007 after breaking his foot on opening day, third baseman Zach Lutz was looking forward to proving just how good he was in 2008. For the first few weeks of the season, things seemed to be going according to plan, as he was outshining every player on the team, including the trio of Mets first round picks, Ike Davis, Reese Havens and Brad Holt. Coming into the season with a vastly redefined upper body, Lutz appeared to be in the best shape of his life. Looks can be deceiving. Currently rehabbing in Florida after re-injuring his foot a few weeks ago, Lutz was hitting .333 with three homers and 12 RBI in only 24 games with Brooklyn this season and admits now that he was only playing at 75-80 percent during that time. Skeptical of his return to Brooklyn this year, Lutz has been told by the organization to put this season behind him and focus on 2009. “I hate to say this, but from what we’ve been talking about, the focus is really on the long-term,” he said. “The organization and I really don’t want to come back and risk anything. I want to play more than anything right now and everybody knows it, but everyone is telling me to look out for myself and my future. It really hurts when you hear something like that, but when you sit down and think about it, it makes perfect sense.” Seen icing his foot after nearly every home game this season in Brooklyn, many reporters wondered just how hurt Lutz actually was, but considering how exceptional his play was on the field, no one thought it was anything more than soreness from a year on the shelf. But things were a lot worse than they seemed. “Every three or four games, I’d have to sit out because it [his foot] was acting up,” said Lutz. “There were times Page 6

after games this season where I couldn’t even walk without it hurting. Right now, I really don’t know what the point would be in trying to come back because I’m not even at the level I was at when I was there. I don’t feel I’m even

Zach Lutz

BAY CURRENTS PHOTO / Ron Hatcher

close to that level now. I have a walking boot on now and I still have problems with my quad.” For a 22-year-old who has been a star at every level of baseball he’s played at, staying away from the game may be a bit tougher than it seems. A student of the game, Lutz spent the offseason in 2007 throwing baseballs with his mother and working out his upper body with his father, all while keeping his foot elevated like the Mets wanted him to, for nearly five months. By doing so and playing injured this season, Lutz has proven he’s a warrior that wants to succeed in professional baseball, perhaps more than anyone else in the sport today. Knowing that, the next few months may be difficult ones for him. “When I was in college, I’d have a game at three right after school and by six, I’d be home running or have my mom throw golf balls at me,” Lutz said. “I’d have a class the next day at 7:45 and I’d be up at 5:30 running and hitting. This is what I love to do and it hurts so bad not to be able to do it. I just have to be patient now. I’m only 22 and I don’t want to risk losing my career. There’s nothing I can do. ” Nevertheless, Lutz is focused on coming back a better player and one who is completely healthy. “I’m going to come into Spring Training in great shape,” he said. “I want to get back to where I was before and I’m going to do everything I can to get there. I know I was doing well when I was in Brooklyn, but I know I could do more. When I would hit a ground ball toward the line at third, I know that I could run it out if I wasn’t hurt. The same thing goes for some of the singles I hit that could have been doubles. I stole a bunch of bases in college too and to not be able to do that was really frustrating. I want to make sure it never happens again.” Visit us at: www.BayCurrents.net

Hybrid Hiring is the latest in third-party recruiting systems. TIME YOU GOT A HYBRID!

College Beginnings Last weekend was anything but a relaxing late-summer break. Mathew was about start college; although he would be moving to a campus an hour away, he was still about to Leave Home. He was nervous because he was worried about handling the very intense schedule. My husband and I were nervous because – well, because he was essentially moving out. One day he’s starting nursery school, the next he’s leaving for college. Monday morning came. It was easy to get up on time, since there was little to get up from – none of us had really slept. But any apprehension we had about the transition, quickly dissipated once we arrived on campus. Mathew was

immediately welcomed by upperclassmen, soon met his roommates in his townhousestyle dorm, and took all of 20 minutes to settle into the routine. So far he’s called several times -- I think he talks to me more now than he did when he was home. He tells me about the array of challenging courses in the offing – including business and accounting classes, something we never thought he was very interested in. At any rate, he’s meeting people from all around the country and even from other parts of the world. He’s in his element! I had wanted to stay and put his clothes and books away in the dorm, but just like he did 13 years ago at the nursery school door, he said, “You can go, Mom. I’ll be fine.” I know he’ll be fine. It’s just me who won’t be -- again.

A singles weekend for the record books By Mike Sage Special to Bay Currents Two days before the big event, I get a phone call. It’s one of my friends with a social calendar as thick as the Manhattan phone book. He asks me if he should bring a few bottles to give out... Why is he calling me? This is fake, he is really just trying to find out something else, I suspect. He’s the guy who tells everyone he’s a matchmaker so he can check them out… What am I in for now??? Fast-forward. It’s two days after the event, and tonight is my first date. Rewind to the event. It’s an elegant ballroom in a Connecticut hotel with about 400 people. I go with a friend for a weekend to this gathering of singles. We are arranged according to backgrounds and ages. Each person is put in a planned group for the meal (I should know how these things work, since I ran them in the past, but I don’t look behind the scenes anymore…I am there for it to happen for me, not everyone else). After the meal, we have a two-men-meet-two-women session that lasts all of 4 minutes, and then we’re off to the next two women. It was not called “speed dating,” but I meet at least 60 women over the two or three hours -- it’s somewhat a blur to me now. Saturday morning, at breakfast, the young lady next to me says, “Don’t you remember me? We were at X, Y & Z together…” Actually, I don’t remember her at first. Is it my fault that she has had five different hair styles? And should I tell her she lost a lot of weight and looks great? (She may think I want to date her – I don’t). Once I realize whom they aren’t introducing me to, I begin to separate those who are too young for me from the rest of the crowd. The list they gave us would have been helpful if

I had started to check things off, or if they had color-coded it in some way before the event (maybe “divorced” in blue and “never married and desperate” in red). Matchmakers are on the prowl. “Is there anyone here you want to meet, come walk with me,” says one. We work the room. She rolls off stats like a baseball announcer. Age, family, background, even dating history if I push. I give them some information, they confirm or give me more. It’s a tradeoff. Sort of like getting the inside scoop on a horse before the race (OK, that’s kind of extreme, but you got the context). Connecting with the people I knew from before the event and letting them indirectly introduce me was the greatest of all moves. I actually sat with someone who was next to someone I was interested in. She has so much energy. But she goes on to talk about birth control – not exactly very tactful before even a first date. Saturday night much is happening, but I don’t want to pull myself from the hotel room. I finally get myself going and Bingo! – I think I finally find someone. It’s someone I knew for some time, but I never felt comfortable enough to approach her. I had met her parents and liked them so much that I couldn’t believe the apple was that far from the tree. I make the approach. I ask her to be open with me. She says, “I would never date a guy I want to marry, and the only guys I date I would never consider marrying. I have a wild streak in me.” I am going to say, “Well, let me be the first, then…” or not say anything at all, and wait until after the first few dates…. But I can’t do it. She has a built-in rejection all ready to fire off. My heart is too soft. NEXT… Sunday morning comes. Everyone is starting to pack up to leave. I find myself standing next to the nicest girl there, and she looks like she is way too young for me. Her smile fills the room and no one else exists. I do everything except drop my plate (well, I almost did), and say, “Can we

I KNOW HOW TO WIN FOR YOU! Call me personally any time for immediate help with:

forget we are anywhere else for the next three hours?” It turns out she knows me from my profile online -- and she quotes from it! She’s got my heart. It’s too good. I’m finding it hard to believe. Is this the set-up that I was afraid of from the “Dress-up as matchmaker” guy working behind the scenes? We go for a walk for 20 minutes, then another 20 and another. Finally I say my friend is waiting (actually, he would have waited longer) and she becomes engaged in conversation with others. Even though she is fully engaged with them, she separates from them for a minute to ask if I want to walk her to her car. She is forthright and not giving me the signal that she is interested in everyone else around her. If eyes could create energy, windmills would be the wrong investment. I’ll keep you posted... Seniors find medical maze difficult to navigate Are you confused about your medical coverage? Do you know what is covered and what is not? Do you know what Medicare Part A, B, and D are all about? I hope this will help: Medicare is the Medical component for seniors and disabled who get Social Security. Part A covers hospital, and nursing care. Part B covers doctor visits, glasses, eye care, hearing care, out-patient care, medical tests, and medical supplies. Part D, a recent addition to Medicare, covers prescription drugs, but most seniors find that they still need supplemental insurance to cover all their medicine. If you have any questions – and I’m sure you do – you can contact me at strauch@baycurrents.com, call the offices of state Sen. Carl Kruger (718-743-8610), Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein (718-648-4700), or Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz (718-743-4078), or talk with the staff at local senior centers. Always have your medicines updated, and know how to take them correctly. If you feel worse after taking any of them, consult your doctor and pharmacist. Make sure your drug plan works for you. If you have problems contact your elected officials and your insurance company -- do not be afraid to get the facts and the most out of your coverage. Do not change your HMO without consulting your family and your doctor. A new Visiting Nurse office has opened on Kings

Highway and East 15th Street. They can provide home health care aids to help seniors avoid having to go into an assisted-living facility or a nursing home. Here are some helpful ways to save money during the tough economy: 1. Read very carefully the bills you get from the telephone, electric, gas, and cable companies. Make sure you are paying only for what you are using, and check to see if discounts are available to you based on your income and expenses. 2. Check your medical and pharmacy bills to see if you are being properly charged. 3. Always look for sales and coupons for the items you need. 4. Kingsborough Community College and Brooklyn College soon will offer their fall courses for seniors. Most senior centers also now have special fall programs. 5. Only give charity to places you know about -- not every organization that sends you letters asking for money is an effective or even legitimate charity. 6. Remember, by February 2009, all TV broadcasting will switch to digital – “rabbit ears” on your TV will no longer be able to pick up the signal. If you don’t have cable or satellite TV, you will need a converter box. The federal government is offering $40 coupons to buy the box – call 1-888-DTV-2009, or visit www.DTV2009.gov. You might want to think about getting combined TV and telephone from cable or satellite, or the TV-telephone-

Internet packages if you have a computer. You can save money on these services, and the telephone is usually much cheaper than what the phone company offers. Keep in mind, though, that 911 operators usually cannot automatically trace calls from cable or satellite phones, and that if there is a power failure or problems with the cable or satellite service, the phone will not work, even to reach 911. It’s a good idea to keep basic Verizon service (about $34 a month) as a backup. I’d like to begin a Discussion Group here, to hear from you on the issues and topics you’re concerned about. Write to Bay Currents, Senior Currents, 2966 Avenue U, Suite 108, Brooklyn, NY 11229, or e-mail me at strauch@baycurrents.net.

BAY FACTOID Sheepshead Bay is known to be named after the fish by that name that once was prevalent in its waters, but some say the neighborhood really was named after its geographic shape, which could be thought (with a little imagination) to resemble a sheep’s head.

It could happen... Story by Carol Moore Illustrations by Aura Moser One day, overnight, the world turned violet. Just about everything turned violet

from the sky and ocean and mountains to the trees and animals and people and from the tallest skyscrapers to the tiniest ant. People sat around looking at one another wondering if they were dreaming. But nobody woke up and things stayed violet, all except for a single Blue Jay who hadn’t changed color and stayed the brightest blue. Being the only thing in the world that wasn’t violet, he was caught and put in a cage. People were shocked. Some were afraid and some were amazed and a few thought it funny, because along with everyone else, the President was very violet. Whole families were violet as were teachers, movie stars, doctors, nurses, gas station attendants, the Queen of England, the President of Mozambique, taxi-drivers, everybody. They went from place to place in their violet cars and buses and rode violet bikes and sat on violet furniture and ate violet food. The smartest scientists in the world gathered to figure it out. Was something wrong with people’s eyes or was it a trick of nature? They did studies and tests and analyzed and evaluated and debated and

wrote article after article, but couldn’t explain it. And no longer could people say they felt “blue” or were “green” with envy or had a “green” thumb. So what they said

and how they said it began to change. Some people said violet was now the most important color in the world because it was everywhere. Others said that violet had no

To advertise call 347.492.4432

importance at all because there was too much of it. They discussed and argued,

joined clubs, held debates, wrote books, and produced movies all about the issue of the importance or unimportance of the color violet. The color of the Blue Jay became a big issue because he had such a little bit of blue and the world had such a whole lot of violet. People argued about the importance of that. Some said the Blue Jay must be a very special bird or maybe not a bird at all

because he alone had kept his true color. Others said this was silly, that the Blue Jay ate bird seed and drank water and fluffed his feathers and that other than his special color he was still just a bird. For the next two years, exactly on the day the world had turned violet and then yellow, it turned new colors: first orange and then pink. Still the Blue Jay stayed blue, causing ever greater disagreement. The first thing people asked was what about the Blue Jay. Had he stayed blue? Yes, he was still the same color. No longer were there two colors in the world, but just one -- the color blue. And because the Blue Jay was a color like everybody and everything else people began to lose interest. Now that he was neither more nor less important crowds stopped coming and one day, six months into the year that the world had turned blue, somebody let him out of his cage and he flew off looking happy to be free. The very next morning the world regained its rainbow of colors as if nothing

had ever happened. At first this was a novelty but soon people forgot the world had once been all violet. They forgot the world had once turned yellow, then orange, then pink, and then blue. They returned to saying they felt “blue” or were “green” with envy or had a “green” thumb. But on occasion they wondered where the Blue Jay had gone and how he was doing and, most of all, if he was still the color blue and what it had all meant. September 1-15, 2008

Food, fun, and music at Brighton Jubilee

As throngs came out for the 32nd annual Brighton Jubilee in late August, a couple opted for a more peaceful venue a few yards away on the beach. Hundreds of merchants at the Jubilee offered everything from locally made crafts to international foods, as kids hopped on rides and an array of performers bade farewell to summer in song and dance.

Stolen, er, Borrowed Goods By I. Friedin Bay Currents Writer When the publisher of Bay Currents called to inform me the deadline was near, I was caught in a bind. It was the dog days of August, with not much new in my neck of the woods and all of my interesting contacts are away or unavailable. Searching my archives I found everything stale or in need of much more work than I could muster in such short time. So what to do? Steal! And who better to steal from than an old friend; his millennium poem that had been gathering dust since shortly after the event. At the time, despite constant urging, he refused to submit it, preferring to simply pass it around his inner circle. Considering today’s political climate and the convention season upon us, I figured I’d give him a call and urge him to pull it out of mothballs. Much to my surprise, he not only agreed, but had written a sequel. His only request was to keep him anonymous.

America in the Twentieth: The Path We Strode At century’s start the outlook for America was bright, To be the greatest nation well within our sight, Technology advanced at ever greater speed, For light, electricity began to fill the need, The noble horse would lose more ground, As machines continued to abound, The train and ship, they ran on steam, The need was growing for gasoline, For now we sing another chord, ‘Cause quite a few can drive a Ford, But although we thought we had arrived, So many here were still deprived. The teens found the world a hostile place, As the powers squared off face to face, We found ourselves in The Great War, And then the flu claimed millions more, Amendments passed; one made us dry, A choice destined to go awry, Another, a more positive note, Gave to women the right to vote. The twenties saw many rolling in dough, For others though it wasn’t so, Farmers were in need indeed, You’d never know blacks had been freed, Liquor caused many to break the law, As organized crime rose to the fore, Before the decade ended though, The market sunk to an all time low. The thirties were such trying times, Very few had many dimes, But as low as things could sink, It was legal once again to drink, When things however seemed their bleakest, And the people at their weakest, When poverty was widely felt, We elected Franklin Roosevelt, United we learned how to heal, Working together in the New Deal. The forties once again was war, At least we were no longer poor, World War II was the very worst, Almost the whole world immersed, So many innocents lost their lives, So many girls who weren’t wives, And when we awoke to the horrible news, In much of Europe were no more Jews. The fifties found so many riches, But communists were this day’s witches, To be hunted down and burned at stakes, By Joe McCarthy and the other fakes, Fascism isn’t really dead, So watch out if you think in red, But rock ‘n’ roll took us by storm, In a few short years it became the norm. The sixties was a time of strife, A time for death, a time for life, For civil rights we had a vision, To end an unjust war a mission, Too often we heard the death knell ring, Among the lost, two Kennedys and a King, We were so rash because we believed, But still too blind to the sins of greed, Though knowing we were told a lie, We never thought the cause would die. In the seventies we escaped, Unaware that we were being raped, We coped with Nixon, Carter and Ford, Many gave up and turned to the Lord, But because we failed to keep asking why, Social consciousness began to die, We danced all night, we danced all day, But in the end, we’d lost our way. The eighties we sunk even lower, Ronald Reagan was in power, Really he was just a puppet, All we wanted though was a muppet, In the past we did with less, But pushed society to progress, Now the days of youth forgotten, We return to a time that for many was rotten. The nineties found the economy healthy, Many people very wealthy, But so many lessons have been lost, With all that money, there’s a frost, Because we never gave adequate thought, Our leaders have now all been bought, What was a bribe another day, Today is just the usual way, And because we neglected the things we saw, Corporate interests rose above the law.

That ultimately led to the deaths of many, Using lies to convince all the rest, To attack a sovereign nation would be for the best, But it unsettled further a tumultuous region, As friends deserted us as a legion, Because it was not for any need, Except to satisfy their selfish greed, But the sins of Bush did not end there, They reached out to everyone everywhere, The American poor and middle classes, Were knocked down on their respective asses, No longer the greatest nation on earth, We only have a fraction of our former worth, And in the name of much needed health care, The health industry cleans our pockets bare, The environment he will surely kill, For want of passing any real green bill, If George Bush inflicts any more strife, Before long on this planet there will be no life, Elected twice by the rich and also those, Who have problems counting their toes, The theme of the Bush years has been ignorance and greed, Ignoring all the world’s every need, So it is not really very much of a mystery, George W. Bush is the worst president in our history.

BAY FACTOID Among the prominent sons and daughters of Manhattan Beach is William Modell (1921-2008), chairman of the Modell’s Sporting Goods retail chain, The store was founded in 1889 by Modell’s Hungarian immigrant grandfather, Morris Modell, who opened the first store on Cortlandt Street in Lower Manhattan.

We’ve come so far since the opening day, Computers and jet planes now hold sway, But we can’t see, we’ll never know, Where we are and where we’ll go, It’s all for one; that’s ME! ME! ME! We’re all alone, adrift at sea, Our heads should hang in deep despair, For we’ve lost sight of how to share, Today it’s money that gets respect, There’s not much room for intellect, But the only way we won’t be blind, Is when we learn to use our mind, Then maybe someday we can see, Instead of “me” to think as “we”! Backwards into the 21st Century As we began century 21, We found ourselves under the gun, The Twin Towers crashed in a pile of rubble, Our security bursting like a bubble, Once again religion corrupted by men, Conjuring evil in their hidden den, Cheney and Bush using it as an excuse, Put to work for their own use, A plan as diabolical as any, September 1-15, 2008

Tech Currents Netbooks capture energy of the Atom By Mathew J. Glenn Bay Currents writer As the demand for portable Internet devices steadily increases, many consumers find themselves in a dilemma: If the key feature they are looking for is portability -- usually the case with the business and college crowd -- a full-size notebook PC, even if lightweight, is cumbersome. The recent string of mobile-internet based cell phones leaves much to be desired, since it is unreasonable to handle business applications or term papers on a tiny cell phone keyboard. The industry caught on to this need rather quickly, and churned out a number of “netbooks -- low-cost, light and small laptops designed for word processing, Internet access, and other basic computing. Among these are the Asus Eee pc, Everex Cloudbook, Acer Aspire One, and HP’s line of Mini Note laptops. These netbooks do not have an optical drive, and often have flash memory instead

of the heavier full hard drive. Missing from them is a powerful processor - the off-brand

speed and efficiency. Addressing this, Intel has come

processors in most of these new devices have been met with many complaints about

are somehow packed into an area about 3/4 the size of a penny. The maximum performance is currently 1.87 Ghz, which, considering its size, is phenomenal. Intel also announced that a dual-core version of the processor will be available soon -- so far Asus has an Eee pc that incorporates the processor, as does the Acer Aspire One. Interestingly enough, HP’s line, the Mini Note, which is far more expensive than its competition, does not have an Atom Processor at the time this is being written, although rumors are circling on the Web that the next version might include one. The Atom Processor marks a decisive shift in the industry toward portability. In the current state of the art, there are many reasons why people will not run out to buy netbooks -- the lack of optical drive, relatively low RAM and hard disk space, to name a few. But at the accelerated rate of innovation, these problems likely will soon be resolved.

GoneFishing A shape-shifting fish By Dave Hansford From National Geographic There’s a species of fish that can rival the most experienced soldier in camouflage techniques. Cuttlefish have been captured on film exhibiting sophisticated camouflage strategies at night, say scientists who are using new high-resolution cameras to bring these dramatic changes into focus. They are also using underwater spectrometers to measure color wavelength to determine how other marine creatures perceive the changes. The findings are helping to crack the code of that these fish use to disguise themselves as coral or algae. For the last nine breeding seasons, Roger Hanlon, senior scientist at the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, Massachusetts, has closely studied the fish in a 5-mile stretch of shallow, flat reef in Spencer Gulf, Australia. This summer Hanlon went back to Australia with collaborators from the University of Sydney and the University of Queensland, and used an autonomous underwater vehicle, or AUV, with a pair of high-resolution cameras and a powerful strobe to take detailed pictures of the concealed cuttlefish at night. The cameras were synchronized and aimed at the same spot so they captured three-dimensional images. Researchers want to know if the cuttlefish have taken their extraordinary talent for camouflage to the next step – using colors invisible to their predators

Cloak of Many Colors

All day, male cuttlefish duel for mating rights, flashing contrasting patterns to deter rivals and impress females. Come dusk, the cuttlefish turn from colorful billboards into masters of disguise, retiring to the seaf loor where they use this extraordinary manipulation to hide from dolphins and other predators. Many sea creatures employ camouflage at night, says Hanlon, but cuttlefish have made it into an art form. “Each animal adopts a tailor-made camouf lage patter n for the particular microhabitat that it settles in. An animal that settles in sand will appear one way, and three meters away, where it’s all algae, another will be camouf laged differently,” Hanlon said. It seems the cuttlefish can assess the color, contrast, and even the texture of

their surroundings and emulate it—in seconds and in total darkness.

Cuttlefish in HD

Cuttlefish skin has been likened to a color television — it has a way of combining basic colors to form more complex hues and dynamic patterns. “It really is electric skin,” Hanlon said, because it’s all controlled by neurons in the brain that transmit impulses and information to the rest of the body. “A cuttlefish has maybe 10 million little color cells in its skin, and each one of them is controlled by a neuron. If you turn some on, but leave others switched off, you can create patterns,” he said. Ironically enough, cuttlefish are colorblind. So how do they match their camouflage and their environment so accurately? It’s partly due to a separate layer of cells called leucophores, which reflect white light, Hanlon said. “When you think about what white is, it’s all colors at once. So in very shallow water, [leucophores] will look white, but as you go deeper, [the ocean] gets a little more green and blue, so those cells will reflect green and blue,” he said. “They can do some [color] matching in a passive way; it doesn’t require the eye to assess anything. It’s a cool trick.”

Shape-Shifting

Mark Norman, senior curator of mollusks at Museum Victoria in Melbourne, said the cuttlefish have a still more ingenious camouflage trick under their skin. “They can also change the sculpture of their skin with bands of circular muscle,” Norman said. “As they contract, the near liquid in the center gets forced up as little nodes, or spikes, or flat blades that stick up.” By employing such “skin sculpture,” he said, cuttlefish can take on the appearance of kelp or rock. “By adding that structural component, [the cuttlefish] gets rid of outline and profile, and predators that are looking for shapes will be confused,” Norman said. While other mollusks, such as clams and nautiluses, have developed hard shells for protection, cuttlefish have instead relied on invisibility, a talent that may have applications for human technology. Norman said the military has shown interest in cuttlefish camouflage with a view to one day incorporating similar mechanisms in soldiers’ uniforms.
