Dear Bayes Congratulations on your offer to study at the School of Environment and Development of the University of Manchester. Access to postgraduate programmes at the University of Manchester is highly selective, and I hope you will take advantage of this opportunity by accepting the offer and joining us in September for your programme of study. The School of Environment and Development (SED) encompasses the disciplines of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, Geography, and the subjects represented within the Institute for Development Policy and Management (IDPM). SED is a new multidisciplinary School with exciting opportunities to work across traditional disciplinary boundaries. The School has over 80 academic staff (within a total staff complement of 125) and over 800 undergraduates and 600 postgraduate students, of whom 100 are research students. SED is committed to providing high quality postgraduate training and education based on excellence in academic and applied research. The international quality of the School's activities in both teaching and research has been validated by external assessment, and confirms SED’s position as one of the UK's leading university-based centres for environment and development studies. The School is particularly delighted with the results of the recent 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), in which all areas of our research have shown significant growth and increased quality. The School entered 77 staff and the RAE assessed two thirds of their research activity to be at the level of international excellence, with 20% judged to be world leading. Research at IDPM contributed to the University of Manchester being ranked the number one UK university in the area of Development Studies based upon ’research power’. IDPM’s research was assessed as ‘world-class’, and in significant areas is viewed as ‘world-leading’. This means that not only is IDPM contributing at a global level to debates about poverty and development, but in many areas is setting the pace. With the government having previously awarded its highest possible rating for the quality of IDPM’s postgraduate teaching, IDPM has now achieved national recognition as the UK’s leading centre for development research and teaching. SED hosts a number of elite, externally funded research centres. Amongst these is the Brooks World Poverty Institute (BWPI), a cross-faculty institution devoted to research on the different dimensions of poverty, chaired by Nobel Prize winner Professor Joseph E. Stiglitz. In addition to this, the UK Department for International Development (DFID) funds another important centre for research on poverty, the Chronic Poverty Research Centre (CPRC). Other key research centres hosted by the School include the Centre for Urban Policy Studies (CUPS), the Centre for Urban Regional Ecology (CURE), the Global Urban Research Centre (GURC), the Centre for Development Informatics (CDI), the Centre for Organisational Development (COD), and the Manchester Architecture Research Centre (MARC). 2009 also saw the launch of the SED-led research initiative Eco Cities: The Bruntwood Initiative for Sustainable Cities at the University of Manchester. Eco Cities is a joint initiative between the University of Manchester and commercial property provider Bruntwood, which draws on the expertise from across the University, including the Manchester Architecture Research Centre, the Centre for Urban Regional Ecology and the Brooks World Poverty Institute. The project seeks to provide a climate change adaptation blueprint for the Manchester city region by the end of 2011.
I believe you will you find the School of Environment and Development offers unrivalled opportunities to develop as a postgraduate student, both because of the quality of our teaching and research and the facilities we and the University offer, and because of the opportunities to work in an environment that encourages innovative and cross-disciplinary initiatives. The creation of the University of Manchester in October 2004, combining the Victoria University of Manchester and UMIST with an unprecedented £300 million capital programme to enhance research and teaching facilities, has provided further opportunities for strengthening and developing the training of postgraduate students. International students at the University of Manchester will also be in the position to take advantage of the University’s Accommodation Guarantee for International Students, whereby international students are guaranteed University managed accommodation for the duration of their programme of study. You will find more information on accommodation facilities and the guarantee at: www.accommodation.manchester.ac.uk I look forward to welcoming you to Manchester in September. Your programme director will be in contact shortly with more information about your programme of study. I wish you every success in your study and your future career.
With regards,
Prof. Simon Guy Head of School School of Environment and Development
