You’ve always been one step ahead. We’ll keep you there.

As we take time to celebrate the freedoms we all hold dear, consider freeing yourself from house cleaning, cooking, yard work and all the obligations of home ownership. Our nurturing lifestyle and flexible care options are designed to maximize independence and help you stay as active as you can be. And for couples, care can be customized for each person — allowing spouses to stay together in their own apartment, even when their needs are different.

W

e’ve been active all our lives and I can’t remember a time when we weren’t ready for the next vacation, the next ski trip, the next dance. Especially the next dance. The kids always joked that St. Peter would have to cut in just to let us into heaven. Ted was always the life of the party. Even after his heart attack a few year ago, we were still on the go more than most of our friends. But now he’s slowed down quite a bit and needs more daily help than I can give on my own. Boardman Lake Glens is the perfect lifestyle solution for us. I still drive and we still do quite a bit, but it’s a great feeling to know that when I have to, I can leave Ted at home and he’ll be safe and well cared for. That’s a special kind of freedom I’ve come to appreciate. As for Ted, he’s still the life of the party—and always ready for one more twirl. We’re thrilled he gets such wonderful care. It keeps us both one step ahead of the game.

Retirement is the time to enjoy the things that are truly important to you: family, friends and your favorite activities. The choices you make now regarding lifestyle, nutrition, activity, safety and personal care can help you preserve your independence and give you peace of mind. At Boardman Lake Glens, you have options for making smart choices that will help you enjoy a safe, comfortable lifestyle. Most important, our full array of customized care allows couples to stay together and every resident to age in place with dignity in friendly, familiar surroundings. Our dedicated team’s family spirit and our unique approach to care are just two reasons why you’ll love to call Boardman Lake Glens home. To learn more about the benefits of living in our beautiful community, stop by or call Rose Selkirk at 231.225.9735 to arrange a visit. Keep in touch with us on Facebook!

Roads and rivers are better when they’re long and winding.

Getting there is 100% of the fun. Whether it’s with the help of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive or your own paddle, Subaru and our partners are proud to support the never ending pursuit of adventure. Love. It’s what makes a Subaru, a Subaru.

Medical excellence. Made for babies. Treating a child is not the same as treating an adult. This simple fact led to the creation of the largest, most advanced children’s hospital in West Michigan—where more than 50 pediatric specialties and programs meet the unique needs of kids, from infancy to age 18. For parents and children alike, there’s no place quite like it. Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. Creating greater possibilities for kids.

becoming fondly familiar to you. Maybe you know us by name? (Or not—we still love you if you are reading this!) Maybe you have figured out where to pick up this new niche of a free lifestyle magazine? Hello! It’s everywhere. Well, we try to be. But we can always do better, so help us along and suggest places where you would like to pick the magazine up. You do know you can also read us online, right? Have you been on our Facebook page? We share stunning photos of this area we all call home every day. Be our friend, LIKE us and join in the revolution. So far, summer is sizzling—just like this issue. We actually had to add pages! This is a good problem and we welcome our new advertisers with open arms. There are so many, I think we need bigger arms! And of course we thank them for their wonderful support. Our magazine comes to YOU free. (I know, you can’t believe it—we’re crazy!) How do we do this, you ask? Our advertisers help pay for this immense quality, so please pay it forward. YOU can help me thank them in a BIG WAY by shopping local and choosing their businesses. Tell them you saw them in our glossy magazine (so they keep advertising)! Did you love the cover shot? As my good friend Chris Klau says, “Amazingness!” Who knew we had shipwrecks right here in the Bay. This feature will intrigue you and maybe even inspire you to take a dive! I am one of those people who only dives on vacation, and I never thought of doing it here. I have to thank Chris Doyal again for allowing us to share his marvelous photography and helping make us look so good. As always, this issue introduces you to local people you may not know. Open these pages and experience their talents! The best part about creating this magazine is we get to meet these unique and interesting people who also happen to be our neighbors, right along with you. People like

Jim DeWildt, who is our featured artist. He has been creating amazing art on a commercial and artistic level for more than 30 years. Then we have the expert gardeners of the Friendly Garden Club brightening our world here in Traverse City. Who knew they have been doing this since 1923! We were just going to do a little blurb to remind our readers to take in the stupendous views of nature on the 30th Annual Garden Walk. But then we did just a little more so these admirable ladies can get the recognition they deserve. Leland’s historic Fishtown was our destination for the home we were welcomed into, shot beautifully by Mike Drilling of Windborne. (He’s probably photographed most of your kids; if he hasn’t, he should because he is tremendous!) This home is a “classic postcard” that epitomizes Northern Michigan living, and it’s inhabited by true natives Mike and Beth Grosvenor. (That is a big deal!) Speaking of Up North living, our Date Night finally got to make an acquaintance with The Boathouse. You really haven’t “lived” if you haven’t been exposed to a dining experience here with your sweetie. There are bits and bobs in-between, and we’ll keep those for you to unveil and enjoy at your leisure. The cherry on top is kept for the cherry lady herself, Julie Millen, owner of Benjamin Twiggs. Her story will impress you, as she overcame some personal challenges to Keep Calm and Cherry On. So stick this copy in your beach bag for later. Or if you peruse through it now, STOP, pour yourself a cold drink (maybe the Classic Mojito we have the recipe for on page 18?), put your feet up and take time out for yourself Cheers to living the BAY LIFE!

Come Home to The Cottages Our assisted living apartments offer comfortable accommodations and modern amenities in an historic setting.

Photographed By Chris Doyal: The schooner Metropolis sunk in 1886 on the east side of Old Mission Peninsula while carrying a load of pig iron and lumber from Elk Rapids to Chicago. A salvage attempt was made in the 1960s but the attempt failed and half of the ship slid into 120’. Much of it can be seen in only 8’ of water.

The nice part of living in a SMALL TOWN is that when I don’t know what I’m doing, someone else does.

Preppy Amazingness Cass Street just got a Pulitzer Prize! As in Lily Pulitzer, thanks to the new budding boutique THE DUNEBERRY. Jim and Ann Nash are the proud owners of the crisp, elegant and fresh store, they named after the bright pink flower that grows on sand dunes. The colors will consume you, and they are Pure Preppy Perfection, with Sophistication. You can pick out the most darling summer resort wear, (sailboats galore) Ann has handpicked all the items herself and used her years of high end retail experience to our advantage. She even has some of Oprah’s top picks from O magazine, as well as the Signature Lily Pulitzer Retro Beach Bike, and jazzy jewelry too. The sign that greets you in the window is by the Gretchen Scott line, and reads: Laugh More, Gripe Less, Ignore Critics, Say Yes, Order Dessert – LOVE LIFE.. Well said and we totally agree. Tell Jim welcome home, he’s a 5th generation TC native, now planting some retail roots.

FATHERS DAY GOLF with Scott, Eric, Bill and Chris Edson

Forget Me Not Scott Edson is Going Big - and Not Going Home. It’s his quest to end Alzheimer’s, riding his bike from the Motor City to Traverse City starting Sept 13th. All in honor of his dad Bill, who suffers from the devastating and heartbreaking disease. “Worst off is my Mom, not only did she lose her best friend, but she has to care for him too.” September is national Alzheimer’s month, Scott’s goal is to raise $20,000, and he will bike the entire trip solo. “I want to do this alone and just do it for my dad.” Well, kind of alone, his big brother Chris Edson (owner of Edson Farms that dad Bill founded in 1979) will be chasing along in the Official Motorhome. Scott, who also will be doing triathlons to honor his dad too,(Wow!) grew up here and now lives downstate with his wife Tracy and two little girls Eva (5) and Chloe (3). Once he gets here (tired, hot, achy and cranky! Just kidding) Jim Smolak, his good friend who co-owns 7 monks, will be supporting Scott by letting him guest bartend for the charity too. I think the bar will be holding him up at that point! Get involved and help give any way you can, they have created a Facebook page and even if you just drink beer and give him a tip, you will have helped make this agonizing disease a real and true distant memory. www.facebook.com/Swimbikerunforbill

A Perfectly Choreographed Move Transformation is their game; KITCHEN CHOREOGRAPHY is their name. This time the Kitchen Choreography team, headed by owners Mike and Angela Goodall, restored not just one or two rooms but an entire house. Look for their new design studio as you drive down Division Street. (It’s the big old house that has been empty for a while. You really can’t miss it.) Completely renovated, what was formerly the historic Stewarts Residence will be home to Kitchen Choreography starting July 1. Building Number 79, as it’s known in the Grand Traverse Commons neighborhood, has never looked better. The Goodalls are excited to be a part of the Commons community and its historic significance to Traverse City. The business’ previous studio and offices at 811 South Garfield Avenue will be officially closed on June 30. Look for upcoming open house information when you’ll be able to see for yourself how the Goodalls’ choreographed this major restoration. Nice move Kitchen Choreography! One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well. VIRGINIA WOOLF

Harbor View Meet the owners of HARBOR 22 housed in the coveted spot that has the killer view of the bay over harbor west marina. A family owned restaurant, General Manager Ian Simpson and wife Veronika lead the team along with Executive Chef Shana Sicotte (formerly of Hanna Bistro) and Todd Schuab they proudly just opened their doors. It’s make over (formerly Scott’s Harbor Grill) will give you a completely new restaurant experience, fresh and young, which they describe as an East Coast Nautical Feel. It’s a little more modern, and a little edgy with a classic sailor dark blue décor, and cool metal. The food boasts local and fresh, and Shana says “The St. Louis Style ribs are so unique you won’t find them anywhere else.” They are in a Cherry Vanilla Barbecue sauce, which certainly sounds delicious. They also have a rare menu full of small plates they are calling Teasers. The beloved outside patio is still pretty much the same, and I’m sure it will be a happening spot to be all summer long. 12719 S West Bay Shore Drive • Traverse City www.harbor22.com

GRAPE NEWS! A New Winery and tasting room to announce! HAWTHORNE VINEYARD that sits high on a bluff, with postcard views of West Grand Traverse Bay, is hoping for a soft opening in August. Chateau Chantal’s award winning winemaker, Brian Hosmer will be crafting the wine, and Chateau Chantal will operate the winery and tasting room. So it’s a winning combination especially since the grounds were once farmed by Chateau Chantal. Bruce and Cathleen Hawthorn are the owners of what will be the largest vineyards on Old Mission with 26 planted acres. Look forward next year to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Gamay, and Lemberger. Wine improves with age. The older I get, the better I like it. – Anonymous www.hawthornevineyards.com

“You only live once ~ but, if you do it RIGHT, once is enough” MAE WEST

Summer Slowdown With the kids out of school, Moms take on even more work in the summer. Dr. Oz has shown us the dangerous impact that stress can have on our bodies. We are there 24/7 for our family, and sometimes (OK, a LOT) it’s a thankless job. Here are six ways to calm down before, during or after “one of those days”!

GIVE IN TO GREY You live under a rock if you haven’t heard the all the hubbub about the novel Fifty Shades of Grey, but did you know it’s the start of a trilogy? There are three books in all, including Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. All three just became available as a box set. The lady behind it, E L James, is a former TV executive, wife and mother of two and based in West London. (Wonder what her husband thinks about all this?) Can you believe this was actually her first novel! It’s #1 on the New York Times Best Seller List and has been hailed by Entertainment Weekly as being “in a class by itself.” It is claimed that the Fifty Shades Trilogy will obsess you, possess you, and stay with you forever. I’m sold; I’ll be reading it, too.

1

Breathe. Deep breathing forces air into the top and bottom of your lungs, making you feel calm and energized. Take just a minute for yourself to regroup and get a grip!

2

Mantra. Repeat after me: “There is nothing as important as my health. I can be one minute late. I can do this later. I don’t need to be perfect.” Use this and you’ll be amazed at the results.

3 4

Realize. You need to take care of YOU in order to be there to take care of your FAMILY. Focus. Pay attention to what you’re doing in each moment ONLY. Stop thinking about the next moment. This WILL make you slow down.

5

Rest. Go to bed 30 minutes earlier and get up 30 minutes earlier. Try it. Use the extra 30 minutes you gain in the morning to prep for the day ahead. When women feel like they’re prepared and organized for the day, they are unstoppable!

6

Take a Hot Bath. Daily Stresses actually deplete our bodies of the nutrients we need to battle the stress. To replenish, forgo 30 minutes of TV time after the kids go to bed and take a hot salt bath. Stress drains the body of magnesium and increases levels of adrenaline. The magnesium [in salt] helps to produce serotonin, a mood-elevating chemical within the brain that creates a feeling of calm and relaxation.

Minty Fresh Summer is all about get-togethers, so have one signature drink you’re great at preparing! This will make you the perfect host. A fabulous choice that’s light and breezy is the Classic Mojito! In the bottom of a glass, muddle 12 fresh mint leaves, the juice of ½ lime, and 1 tablespoon simple syrup. Add a few ice cubes and pour in 1 ½ ounces (one shot) of light rum and ¾ cup seltzer. Garnish with a lime wedge. Enjoy!

TOP: The MAJESTIC VIEW from The Boathouse Restaurant, only rivaled by the serenity of sitting on an actual sailboat! (But you wouldn’t have Chef Eric)

Come Sail Away

RIGHT: Impeccable service at the ready with YOUR glass of wine.

As the world-renowned Trip Advisor reviews show, Foodie Aficionados willingly travel hundreds of miles to the Northern Michigan Crown Jewel that is THE BOATHOUSE. Just a whisper of the famed name Chef Eric Nittolo inspires thousands to salivate, conjuring up delectable memories of classic French influences that challenge one’s palate to embark on culinary adventures. We are beyond blessed to have this rave reviewed restaurant that has left lasting impressions all around the world right here in our own backyard! The one-of-a-kind experience offered by The Boathouse begins long before you arrive at the restaurant’s front door. You can’t help but relax as you take in the inviting and serene drive along the glistening bay to arrive at your destination. For all its perfection in Divine Dining, The Boathouse wasn’t exactly planned. In 2000 owner Doug Kosch and wife Erin were downstate east of Sterling Heights, young parents with a daughter, Emma. They were looking for a change of pace. Their second daughter, Mallory, had arrived a month early. As Doug explains, “I literally picked them up from the hospital in a packed U-Haul truck!” Now that’s a brave move, and a great story. Up North they came. Doug had been in the restaurant industry for years, and after a while, he had come across a “help

wanted” notice for a manager at The Boathouse. Timing is everything, as they say. The current owner was in his 60s and facing a health challenge. The Boathouse was also a very casual place at that time. In 2004, Doug took over, and in 2007, Chef Eric donned his apron in the kitchen. “We are a great team,” Doug says. “Eric is a like a freight train, and I reel him back in. We balance each other out.” Unlike most chefs who you have to drag out of the kitchen, Chef Eric is comfortable meandering from table to table, conversing with guests and delighting in their joy of his creations. Originally from the East Coast and the devoted father of seven children (yes, seven; that wasn’t a typo), he went to Culinary School and was originally hired as a sous chef. Chef Eric is the passion and driving force behind the world-class food that artistically graces every plate. Eric’s object of desire became the very rich Kobe beef. At $80 a pound, it’s the caviar of beef. Eric set out to impress and bring Doug over to the Kobe Side. One morning across the fax came an invoiced order for 100 pounds of it! Holy Cow! (I’m sure Doug’s response may have been more colorful!) “I promise I’ll sell it,” swore Chef Eric. Not only

DATE NIGHT continued did he sell it, but he expertly molded the cut and flavors to be exceptional. It is simply delicious, and The Boathouse’s signature dish. “The most perfect piece of meat I have ever eaten,” rave some guests. Other rare events that are exclusive to The Boathouse are a yearly Wild Game Dinner that occurs the first week in February. It’s a Wild treat, with flights of fancy such as Lion on the menu! In November you can dine with Sinatra—fabulous live music and fabulous food. And in December, the big guy himself makes an appearance at The Boathouse! At Brunch with Santa Claus, reindeer take over the parking lot and every child’s name and age are recorded beforehand, reserving a special gift just for them. Who knew The Boathouse was much more than just a date night place? The Boathouse could just as easily be named the Green House. Farm to table food enhances every meal. Most veggies and fruit are locally grown and include Doug’s very own backyard varieties. (He has 800 apple trees and a strawberry patch.) Doug and Erin even raise chickens, ducks and turkeys, although this is probably not your first thought when the farm-raised fowl arrives on your plate! But at least you know they were raised right and fed well! Everything is made here, even the desserts and the bread. Plus, every meal is made to order. The menu changes in summer and winter, so it’s always a new journey in food. Of course, being by the water, fish and seafood are the stars and Dover Sole is their other famed Signature plate. The wine list lovingly represents local, too, with every winery on Old Mission Peninsula represented and one whole page dedicated just to Michigan wines. “Champagne is an absolute favorite in the summer,” says Mike, the wine guy and manager who has been with Doug for eight summers. The rest of the staff is just as loyal. Most return every summer, and a lot of his exceptional staff are teachers. They all welcome you in and tend to your every need. Doug believes that what distinguishes his restaurant and a diner’s experience is the culture. “I live a mile up the road, my kids live here and we all love being here. It’s the right fit.” That sense of home, belonging and pride shine through in the glowing white of the cottage wainscot décor. (Doug paints it every winter.) Entering the restaurant is almost like stepping into the pages of Coastal Living Magazine; its romantic and elegant ambiance is a breath of fresh air. The cherry on top? That view of course of the crystal bay as a sailboat breezes by filling you with a feeling of pure serenity. Order a perfect sunset along with your meal and you’re falling in love all over again. Just what a date night should be. Cheers. 14039 Peninsula Drive, Traverse City • 231-223-4030 www.boathouseonwestbay.com 24

Benjamin Twigg’s owner Julie Millen amidst “Cherrylicious Products” at her new location.

Keep Calm and Cherry On Remember the 1700s tale “The Legend of Benjamin Twiggs” in which great tragedy strikes leaving Benjamin at sea and hanging onto a crate of cherry pits for dear life? Benjamin was forever thankful to cherries and “The Land of the Sweetwater Seas” in Traverse City for his good fortune and success. Benjamin’s tale mirrors the life in his successor, owner of Benjamin Twiggs Julie Millen. Originally from Pittsburgh, Julie moved to Traverse City in 1992 when her then-husband was positioned here with Pepsi. She was a Computer Engineer and a mom with three kids ages five, four and two. As Julie says “I was here for a day, and it felt like home!” She loved the Northern Michigan lifestyle so much she convinced her husband to stay, and she became a full-time mom. She became involved in every aspect of her children’s lives and her life was complete! In 2004 life, as it does, threw her a few curveballs.

26

JULY/AUGUST 2012 | BAY LIFE NORTH

Julie became a single mom after her divorce. Her husband didn’t like Traverse City! So as we English would say, “Cheerio.” (Not the cereal; in the U.K., this means Goodbye). Let’s make that Cherry O! Just for Julie! A little cherry humor … This change in plan, she could handle. She loved being a part of her kids’ lives, and she decided that wouldn’t change. So she tried her hand at a few part-time jobs, looking for her niche. The next curveball was Breast Cancer. This one, of course, is devastating, but Julie took it all in stride. Surrounded by family, friends and her

kids who were by then 14, 16 and 17, she had chemotherapy and lost all of her hair. Today, she recounts some funny stories from her kids with a smile! “My youngest son couldn’t believe it when I started to get little prickles of hair growing back! He thought I was always going to be bald like when a man loses his hair!” After that battle, Julie really objects to the saying some adopt to try to make you feel better. “Don’t ever tell me what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. I would probably punch you.” Of course, she isn’t really a violent person. But she definitely was ready for a fun chapter in her life. She found it hanging out with cherries. She was already working parttime at Benjamin Twiggs (still trying to find that niche!) and the owner was struggling but also afraid to change anything. The owner offered to sell Julie the business, and she jumped on it! The brand has been the original purveyor of Cherries since 1966, and

Benjamin Twiggs was the only place people came as a kid for their ‘Up North’ Cherry Memories. Now older generations are passing those fond moments to their kids and grandkids. Julie knew that the products were fabulous and well loved, and that her customers were loyal and die-hard cherry lovers. What the business needed was some updating—let’s call it “Out of the Cherry Crate” thinking! Julie had a few tricks up her sleeve. The first trick was to hire an amazing staff. “Hire people who share your passion,” says Julie. All of the time, people tell her, “I want to work here. It looks fun!” Her staff is so great that customers constantly ask if they are the owner. Julie thinks this is the highest of compliments. Julie bought the business in August of 2008, right as the country entered the recession. But the blessing was at that very same

time, the “Local” movement started and the community proudly embraced small business. A small upgrade to the logo was done, and Benjamin Twiggs continues to ship worldwide. Julie’s biggest joy is serving one-on-one with customers and personally delighting over all the Cherrylicious Wares in the store. (She just moved to a bigger location a few doors over.) Speaking of the new location, the day after Julie signed the lease was the day they announced that more than 90 percent of the local cherries were destroyed! However, due to her strong network of loyal farms and suppliers, she is assured to meet all her cherry needs this year! Her kids, you ask? They are all grown and doing great. She is even a proud grandma! Keep Calm and Cherry On, Julie!

ALISA KROUPA is our very own, modern-day “Ariel, the Little Mermaid.” The only difference is (OK, maybe there are a few other differences), Ariel gave up her voice to make the prince fall in love with her, but Alisa uses her valuable gift of “voice” to make you fall in love with the Bay. As she wears her “President of the Grand Traverse Bay Underwater Preserve” crown with pride, she will beg to ask you the question: “What does the Bay mean to you?” Whether it’s long days on the Bay, dips in the Bay, hanging by the Bay or just the serenity of and calming effect of the Bay, everything we do is centered around this beautiful cerulean gem. “The Bay is our Backyard,” and that’s where Alisa’s passion comes in. She’s determined to Preserve, Promote and Protect the Beautiful Grand Traverse Bay.

WHAT DOES THE BAY MEAN TO YOU? Alisa has been around water her whole life. Originally from a little town in Florida named Indian Shores, she is a natural beach girl. As the only child of older parents, she travelled extensively and experienced bodies of water all over the world. Eventually, she went to school and called Traverse City home. Her Prince Charming is of the Kroupa Cherry Farmer family, and together she and Chris have four fabulous kids. In-between owning a small business and raising four kids, Alisa somehow finds the time to be a commissioner for Parks and Recreation! Supermom and a Public Servant, this lady is über-talented and, most importantly, a natural history geek. Alisa also has an Ancient History degree, which feeds her need for the allure of the deep as she dives headfirst into the water and discovers the hidden mysteries that lay beneath. Alisa finds much better treasures than Mermaid Ariel’s forks and definitely is “a part of their world.” (You’ll only get that if you’re a mom JULY/AUGUST 2012 | BAY LIFE NORTH

and have had to watch “The Little Mermaid” at least 50 times!) She was elected President of the Grand Traverse Bay Underwater Preserve (GTBUP) in March and is the first woman to hold the title. She has a list of hundreds of things she wants to accomplish. (Type A personality? Check!) At the top of that list is increasing awareness, making GTBUP a household name and raising lots of money to help GTBUP flourish and grow.

WE NEED TO PRESERVE, PROMOTE AND PROTECT THE BAY While having coffee with Alisa, I learned a lot more than just underwater stuff! I learned about the Chert Mines in Norwood, where Indians found material for their arrowheads, and evidence discovered there of the glacial age and bedrock that reaches all the way to Wisconsin, a link that is 10,000 years in the making. That the Grand Traverse Bay was really a large valley and the entire area was dry. That she believes the Vikings were here. That Power Island is

called Marion Island by locals (I knew that, but you may not!), and she shared stories of Bassett Island and Dick Bassett, its namesake. And that somewhere (BIG SECRET, SSSHHH) they are finding an underwater Stonehenge! Wow! There will be more in-depth stories to come … for sure. For now, back to the subject at hand. Did you know that the Bay holds sunken ships and protected artifacts? Who Knew? Me neither, until I started to do some research! The Grand Traverse Bay Underwater Preserve was formed in 2008 and is the 12th trail to be a part of Michigan Underwater Preserves. It is a nonprofit organization made up of volunteers. Its mission statement is “To sustain an Underwater Preserve by enhancing education, research, and preservation of our Great Lakes and maritime heritage, and by the promotion of tourism and public recreation.” Our Grand Traverse Bay actually has 20 dive sites that are all mapped out by the GTBUP for you to experience. The Pure Michigan campaign has also adopted the statewide dive trail, which will open the floodgates for tourism, a blessing and a curse in this place we all call home. But whenever tourism can bring an influx of money and awareness to our area, we definitely all benefit. So, what are you waiting for? Grab your flippers and snorkel and experience the shallow treasures. Make a date to go diving as a hobby at home as opposed to something you only do in the islands on vacation. (We are blessed to have the same clear water.) Just remember the Underwater Cardinal Rule: Only look, don’t touch (just like you would tell your kids)! Have fun on your Underwater Adventure, and wave to Alisa, our Grand Traverse Mermaid!

Visit www.gtbup.org or go to their Facebook page to get involved. You can even become a member! ON A FINAL NOTE: As all great

stories need pictures, this feature would be beyond dull without the stunning and amazing photographs that bring it to life. All were taken by Chris Doyal, who very generously offered to share these wonderful shots with us. Chris was also a past president of the GTBUP. You can check out more of his photography at www.chrisdoyal.com.

Highchair Recall Hopefully this doesn’t affect you, but it’s better to be safe than sorry! These recalled highchairs were made in China. Big surprise, right? And a good argument for buying American. Evenflo has announced a recall of about 35,000 convertible highchairs. The activity tray on the highchair can unexpectedly detach, posing a fall and injury risk for an unrestrained child. This recall involves Evenflo Dottie Lime (model number 29111259), Dottie Rose (model number 29111271), and Marianna (model number 29111234) highchairs, which convert from a highchair to toddlersized table and chair. Toys R Us and Wal-Mart sold them for around $40. Call Evenflo at 800-233-5921.

Babies and Sun Why do sunscreens say “ask a doctor” for babies six months and younger? The reason is a baby’s skin is much thinner and absorbs sunscreen more easily. A baby’s surface area to body weight ratio is much higher than a child’s or an adult’s, so a baby’s exposure to sunscreen is much greater. Best thing to do? For babies less than 6 months old, use other means of sun protection—clothing or sun shades—and only apply a small amount of sunscreen when needed for a short period of time. Once inside and out of the sun, wash it off so it’s no longer penetrating.

THAT’S NOT CANDY! The maker of Tide Pods will create a new double-latch lid to deter children from accessing and eating the brightly colored detergent packets. The tiny packets were introduced to the market earlier this year. Each colorfully-swirled packet contains a single-use amount of detergent that dissolves in water. Poison Control centers began receiving calls from parents of children who had swallowed the pods after confusing them with candy. Poison Control centers say nearly 250 cases have been reported so far this year, with children suffering symptoms such as nausea and breathing problems. If you have little ones, keep a tight lid on these from now on.

Toddler Beach Bag “Whoever coined the term ‘TERRIBLE TWOS’

never let their child live to be three.” ANONYMOUS

We’ve compiled a TODDLER MOM CHECKLIST for a fun day at the beach, and a quicker “out-the-door” experience. Life is complicated enough; going to the beach shouldn’t be! (If you are bringing your cell phone, make sure your bag has a zipper pocket or just drop it in a Ziploc bag). DRINKS: The sun is brutal and very

BABY POWDER: Use this to help relieve

dehydrating, so fluids are a must (for both of you). Half-pint water bottles with sport caps help keep out sand, and juice boxes are great too. Put them inside a mini-cooler; one that you can fit in your Beach Bag is ideal.

sweaty body parts, and shake some on your hands before eating to get rid of sand.

SUNBLOCK: If you can apply sunblock at

home before you leave, this is the best option. But remember to stow it in your bag so that you can reapply. The new regulations have really helped, and there is even a NO Tears option. Use SPF 50, at least for Toddlers, and reapply every 80 minutes. Don’t forget to put sunblock on yourself, too! SWIM DIAPERS/WIPES: Disposables are

the way to go, but bring extras—they don’t do well with accidents! Or use the swimsuits with cloth diapers built in. These work really well. Remember your wipes, of course, for everything messy. BEACH APPAREL: Sun hats (you, too)

HIDDEN CHERRIES In the spirit of the Cherry Season (and the fact there aren’t many!), this Sweet book was the official book of the National Cherry Festival. It has your child looking for Mr. Cherry amongst all the cherry festivities we celebrate locally. It’s written by Anne Margaret Lewis and Susan Hammon, and it was illustrated by Jim Dewildt who is our featured “Artist in the Studio” on page 48. You can even pop by his studio and purchase the book in Suttons Bay.

and T-shirts are highly recommended by pediatricians, as they will block the sun’s rays. Use sunglasses if your little one will wear them. PLASTIC BAGGIES: Bring pint-, quart- and

gallon-sized reusable bags to store snacks, clean diapers and anything else you don’t want becoming sandy or wet! (Use these to dispose of soiled diapers, too.)

SNACKS: Everyone works up an appetite at

the Beach. Bring easy-to-eat items such as cereal bars, pretzels or crackers. (This way, you don’t need to schlep a cooler.) SAND TOYS: Keep it to a minimum. You will

have to carry them back and forth. The basics are a shovel, pail and watering can. Toddlers always want someone else’s toys no matter how many you bring, so get creative with shells, rocks, moats, sticks and mountains of sandcastles. TOWELS: This one’s a given, but make sure

you have one for every member of the family. CASH: Bring a few bucks for an ice cream or

cold drink. MOM MAGAZINE: Don’t even think about

reading a real book with a toddler, but you may get a minute to flip through a mag!

POSSIBLE EXTRAS: CHAIRS: Bring or rent. UMBRELLA: Bring or rent. A WAGON: Kids can tote their own

toys, and it can double as a makeshift eating area. CAMERA: Cell phones are great, but consider a good old fashioned disposable one, to avoid sand and water accidents.

A Dynamite DISNEY DO! THIS IS BIG! Food Products

advertised on the Walt Disney Company’s TV channels, radio stations and websites will soon HAVE to be HEALTHY! Under the new rules, a wide range of fast foods, sugared cereal, candy, drinks and other products will no longer be acceptable advertising material for Disney. In addition, Disney will reduce by 25 percent the amount of sodium in the 12 million children’s meals served each year at its theme parks. The company also plans public service announcements encouraging exercise and healthy eating for children. It’s all part of complying with federal recommendations put forward last year. Good job, Disney, helping us moms win the battle of “If it doesn’t dance on TV, my kid won’t eat it.”

“Whether you think you can, or think you can’t, YOU’RE RIGHT.” HENRY FORD

WHY Summer Camps? BY JOHN GESSNER, GRAND TRAVERSE CONSERVATION DISTRICT

For kids, “summer” is synonymous with “vacation”—a time to decompress from a year’s worth of school with no worries, no commitments, and definitely no learning! While there’s nothing wrong with some good ol’ fashioned relaxing, it’s how kids relax and where kids relax these days that’s a concern. All around the country, children today spend less than half as much time outdoors than they did just 20 years ago, as they become increasingly “plugged in” to electronic media. In his 2005 book, Last Child in the Woods, Richard Louv immortalized this diminishing interaction with nature as “nature-deficit disorder” and cited direct links to childhood obesity, diabetes, attention-deficit disorders and a dwindling sense of environmental stewardship. Nature Day Camp was created in 2008 in direct response to this growing concern in the Grand Traverse Region. So… if any of these ideas resonate in your household, or if you’re simply looking for something fun, safe and educational for your child to do this summer, then sign them up for Nature Day Camp and help them create memories that will last a lifetime! The Grand Traverse Conservation District offers several camp opportunities throughout the summer. Programs are designed for kids ages 4 to 14 to experience the natural world in a fun, educational setting at the Boardman River Nature Center and Natural Education Reserve (a 500-acre natural area).

Once Upon a Time … They Lived Happily Ever After Local libraries in all the towns we cover have a great Summer Reading Program: DREAM BIG for kids and OWN THE NIGHT for teens. It’s still not too late to jump in and sign them up. And as a parent, you can still have a little Summer Reading Program at home. Just tie a few books to some fun things and watch their imaginations soar! Books can take a kid anywhere, and the joy of reading instilled in a young child will stay with him or her forever. Look at the phenomenon that young adult books have caused lately as they’ve been brought to life on the big screen—Harry Potter, Twilight, The Hunger Games, etc. It’s such a gift, the way that these movies have increased awareness of books and reading. Still, we live in a digital world. Encourage your kids to switch off, get turned on to reading and stick their heads in a great book! www.Tadl.org; www.Petoskeylibrary.org; www.Charlevoixlibrary.org.

LEGO-TASTIC!!! For more fun Summer Stuff to do, head on over to the History Center of Traverse City and experience the Wonder of LEGO. The Lego Carnival exhibit is open seven days a week through Sept. 1. It combines amazing Lego sculptures and hands-on activities. It even features a thousandsquare-foot Lego Village, created by the Michigan Lego users group! (Who knew?) There are also “build stations” for interactive fun, as well as life-sized castles, ships and forts. AND don’t forget the life-sized Lego block tunnel for kids to climb through. While they are checking out the Lego-Tastic World, they can also take in a little Traverse City history, too! After all, it is a History Center! http://traversehistory.org

ANSWER: Crooked and crowded teeth are not only difficult to keep clean and properly maintain, they can also contribute to decay, gum disease, and tooth loss. Other consequences could be abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, inefficient chewing, excessive stress on gum tissue and the bone that supports the teeth, and problems with headaches and jaw joints. When left untreated, many orthodontic problems become worse. Early intervention can be less costly than the additional dental care required to treat more serious problems that might otherwise develop. A nice smile is priceless; it can enhance physical appearance, and it can also boost self confidence as it brings the face into better proportion.

BE the difference in a teen’s cultural life experiences and consider being a Host Family! The Aspect Foundation & American Councils for International Education are saying goodbye to 18 students and hello to new ones arriving in August, and they need volunteers! The Aspect Foundation students are “traditional” exchange students from Europe, Asia and South America while American Councils students are here on State Department scholarships from the Balkans, former Soviet countries, Africa, the Middle East and southern Asia. That’s pretty much the whole globe! Exchange students attend local high schools, and they all have their own spending money and health insurance. They just need wonderful families with open hearts and open minds. If this describes your family, contact Pam Woolcott at 231-264-6105. pam.woolcott@aspectfoundation.org

What if Church Were More Than a Building?

Open Hearts.

As an historic landmark in downtown Traverse City for more than 100 years, Central United Methodist Church stands proudly on Cass Street overlooking the beautiful Boardman River. This church, with just over 1000 members has evolved from a simple wooden structure built on donated land from Hannah, Lay and Company, to a vibrant congregation rich with tradition and alive with faith. The earliest members of the Methodist Church were known for the energy and innovation with which they invited people to Christ and welcomed them to their circle. Today at Central, this tradition continues as they invite everyone to discover an open and hospitable community of Christian believers who respects diverse perspectives and resolves to love one another as they unite in their Christian mission.

Open Minds.

The Mission of the United Methodist church calls its members to “Make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. It is this very mission that has driven the people of Central Church to rethink, reexamine and remold how they live as a church community. Some members of Central Church have found a meaningful role with the Reconciling Ministries Team, which openly welcomes members of the gay and lesbian community to find their faith at Central. Still others have found their ministry in serivng with the Community Garden Team to work the soil and help provide fresh produce to the Food Rescue program in the Traverse City area. And, Central’s Community Outreach team has embraced the growing population of homeless and individuals in need by providing daily meals, showers, phone and mail service for our struggling community members.

definitely one to add to your Traverse City “to do” list. Everyone is welcome, bring a blanket or a lawn chair, relax and enjoy the piece of God’s creation that we call home.

Open Doors.

Central United Methodist Church is a true gem in our historic community, so we hope you take a moment the next time you’re in downtown Traverse City to admire the stained glass windows, enjoy a quiet moment in the prayer garden, worship with us at Church in the Park, or maybe even walk through the doors in search of your home under the Central Church dome.

Many of us in Traverse City have chosen this place for its vast natural beauty and rich heritage, and are proud to call this community home. As a gift to residents and visitors alike, and in celebration of all of God’s blessings, Central Church offers a unique outdoor worship opportunity each Sunday during the summer months. Church in the Park is a casual worship experience held on the shores overlooking beautiful West Grand Traverse Bay at Sunset Park in downtown Traverse City. Filled with music from a variety of local talents, traditional scripture and hymn singing, and thought-provoking messages, this experience is

An Itching for ART

Jim with his WALL OF ART in his Suttons Bay Studio ABOVE RIGHT: Old Mission Lighthouse print. BELOW: The Salty Dog Sailor

YOU HAVE THREE CHOICES IN LIFE: Give up, Give in or Give it all you’ve got! If Jim DeWildt

had listened to his high school teacher who said, “You’re not going to cut it as an artist kid. Have a plan B.” He would be in the “Give up” category. But following his heart, he chose the path of “Give it all you’ve got.” He’s still doing that 40 years later. The man quite frankly is Unfairly Artistically Gifted! (Just kidding. We adore him.) He is able to masterfully work in oil, watercolor, acrylic, ink and pencil. Most artists are gifted in just one area! His artful journey began when he attended Kendal College of Art and Design and graduated in 1971. If there hadn’t been a U.S. Army draft, Jim would probably still be working for Hallmark as a book illustrator, the job he scored right out of college. As it happened, he ended up at the Pentagon for his two-year army stint, working as an illustrator alongside Ivy League graduates from Yale and Harvard. When his time in the army was done, he travelled out West to Portland, Oregon, for a while and finally moved to Northern Michigan in 1974 to begin his dream of having a gallery. However, starving artists with a whimsical dream don’t become Andy Warhol or Monet overnight; fame and notoriety take a while to build. If you want to pay the bills, you go commercial with your talent, which is just what Jim did. He etched out for himself a brilliant career (think Don Draper in “Mad Men” … well, kind of!) working with ad agencies and public relations firms to offer illustration, design, branding and campaigns to the Fortune 500 companies of corporate America. Putting advertising success aside for a while, Jim took the opportunity to become a teacher at Northwestern Michigan College (NMC). He thought, “Wouldn’t that be great,” and appreciated the

48

JULY/AUGUST 2012 | BAY LIFE NORTH

rare time to work as a practicing artist. He loved that there is a “method to teaching,” and taught for six years! One of his students is local frame shop owner Todd McMillen who fondly remembers Jim in his blog: “His big round glasses, furry mustache and haircut were typical of the 1980s and reminded me of the lead singer from ‘Simple Minds.’” That gives us quite the visual. I’m sure that if there were pictures, Todd would frame them. (Couldn’t help it! Sorry.) Next, in Jim’s artful story comes branding of a different sort, from wine labels to children’s books. His “Hidden Cherries” book even became the official children’s book of our National Cherry Festival! On the “Hidden Dinosaurs” book, he worked with a paleontologist for accuracy. There’s a “Hidden Pumpkins” book, too! All of these treasures can be found in his gallery in Suttons Bay, where you will see the sign to turn left off the also very wellbranded M-22! As you pull up, the first thing to catch your eye is the “Salty Dog Sailor” (kinda looks like Jim). That, too, has a cool history. When I inquire, Jim tells me he was actually commissioned to do the painting in 1974 as a restaurant sign; the restaurant was located where Pearls in Elk Rapids is now. Last fall, he ran into the restaurant owner’s wife. She shared that her husband had passed away and that she still had the sign— would he like it? This brings the story full circle. In 1974, when he was just dreaming of having his own gallery, he created this painting—now it graces the door to welcome you. It also shows how his work stands the test of time! Which leads us into today … The beautiful work that lines the walls of the gallery is diverse, showing all his talents, but most prevalent are his giclee prints. Giclee prints are expected to last for 200 years, and they’re the closest to an original that you can get. Jim’s vintage-feeling, giclee posters gorgeously portray the “beloved” places in Northern Michigan, and they resemble woodcut pieces of art. They easily fit into the décor of any home, from modern to classic, shabby chic and everything in-between. They inspire you to fall in love with the places all over again, like you did on your first visit. Jim creates them by using an old Scratch technique that goes back to before old catalogs. Using a white clayboard that he mounts onto foam core for some density, he covers the whole board in black India ink and scratches away, free-forming

ink strokes, stroke upon stroke, that magically morph into places that recall memories for the art lover. The color process is computerized, but even this is hand-placed, built layer by layer in Photoshop by Jim, who says his personal preference is the Black and Whites. We’ve saved the best for last. Jim lives behind the studio with his wife Marnie, a gifted watercolor painter. Their four kids are all grown, but there are grandchildren to spoil. The other highlight of his gallery is a present to himself from long ago, a 1987 HarleyDavidson motorcycle that sits there showing off. He didn’t know where else to put it, but strangely it works well, making the gallery eclectic. Art has been pretty good to Jim, and he to it. He has definitely made his “INK mark” in the world, and proved to that high school teacher that he didn’t need a plan B after all.

It is just as disastrous to have the wrong accessories in your room as it is to wear SPORT SHOES WITH AN EVENING DRESS. DOROTHY DRAPER

Pillow Talk Here’s a nautical spin on the ordinary, and a great conversation piece right on your favorite chair, window box or couch. With the focus on Michigan and its surrounding bodies of water they’re a perfect choice to spruce up your living space with a fresh twist. Robbi Lindeman a downstate “Michigander” owner of SALT LABS makes these unique vintage map and nautical chart pillows. Robbi shares with us “The inspiration for my “map making, comes from years of travelling as a teenager and university student in the late 60’s and early 70’s.” You can snag these great finds locally, at Pine Cone in Cedarville and Rau Art & Design in Harbor Springs. P.S. They are green too using eco-friendly textiles and printing methods.

Relishing Rugs “I’ll know it when I see it.” That’s what many people say when they hunt for the perfect area rug. They’ve seen fantastic scenes in shelter magazines and want to create that feeling in their home. But, the rug in their mind may never have been created and they look for years… hoping to find ‘perfection” before their furniture wears out. If this is you, here’s a Rug Buyer’s Check List! Start with an open mind. Bring your optimal size (not all rugs are available in all sizes). Bring fabric/paint swatches and a picture of your room. Bring pictures of rugs you’ve seen and like. This will help determine your taste – traditional, transitional or contemporary, and focus your search. Define what colors you’d like to feature, but be open to the fact that often a rug designer will add a touch of a unique color to pull the design together. Pamper yourself with time to explore. Don’t sandwich yourself into 20 minutes between the kid’s soccer games! This is a “friend’ you’ll have for many years. It’s fun to mix rugs up a bit! Don’t be afraid to let blue dominate in one rug and red in another, as long as the basic color schemes complement each other. A room will be much more welcoming if everything isn’t too “matchy-matchy.” And, if you’re new to rugs, don’t be afraid to fall in love with a more sophisticated design. More intensity over time is more pleasing!

AT HOME

Fishtown IN HISTORIC

We usually feature homes of people who moved here to live the UP north lifestyle, after years of being in the city, or after spending memorable summers here. But this time we have deeply planted roots, a bonafied local native, of 4 generations, welcome into the Leland home of MIKE AND BETH GROSVENOR. PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE DRILLING/WINDBORNE STUDIOS

S

ince 1917 The Grosvenor family, whose geneology traces to the islands, has operated mail and passenger boats between Leland and the Manitous for many years, departing from Leland’s historic Fishtown. The Manitou Island Transit Company, which Mike and Beth own takes people out to explore both North and South Manitou Islands. These two beautiful and rugged islands are about 15 miles off shore, and are part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. But, back to Leland and this gorgeous house, the house was finished two years ago and built by their son in law, who incidentally lives across the street. Pulling in the driveway you are greeted with a wonderful inviting feeling. An enormous door, majestically greets you, and as you enter your attention

can’t help but veer left. Adorning the wall is an original painting of Mike’s dad as a young man, delivering the mail to the island and it’s an important part of this family’s history. Being at home with his Northern Michigan heritage is apparent all around, the house, sailboats and nautical elements are spotlighted in little nooks and crannies and the tone is light and airy. In the main family room the awe inspiring fireplace sits at attention, with Mystery and Marvel, for it carries a secret! No one knows where this stone came from; it is a closely guarded one even from Mike and Beth. But never the less they don’t hold a grudge.

The Wow factor here is most definitely the sprawling kitchen and both Beth and Mike take turns to cook in it. It doesn’t hurt that Mike’s first cousin Tracy Scott along with husband Paul have owned a kitchen company (Northwood Kitchens) since 1975

BELOW: The well loved out door porch that opens to the kitchen A “not so ordinary” window nook OPPOSITE: The spectacular spacious kitchen, that feeds many grand-kids

and with the looks of this kitchen he was probably their best customer in a while! It could easily house a small army for dinner, and that’s just what they have. This house is all about the grandchildren, they have six in all and they range in age from 15 to 10. That makes sense now why there is a refrigerator that would house food for an entire month when just the two of them live here! Mike shares with me “we keep a big stash of root beer popsicles for the grandkids.” The grandkids will be the 5th generation, their parents were all raised here, moved away for college and came back to raise their own families. The story of the grandkids being here the dock paves the way for a lot, unfolds as the you to be taken to the water outdoors beckon you ALMOST AGAINST YOUR OWN WILL through the back door. What you find here is “Pure Michigan” as it sits right along the river. There are fishing poles propped up against the side of the house at the ready, for the bass the youngest grandson has been on a mission to catch! It will get a little break, as he and his brother had just left for France that afternoon. There’s a fire pit, I’m sure that gets worn out making s’mores, and all around the yard are fun splashes of color. The dock paves the way for you to be taken to the water, almost against your own will. At the water’s edge (which Mike dredged out just for the kids to swim) there are 2 canoes, and a classic wooden boat from days gone by. The turquoise Adirondack chairs lovingly lull you in and sitting there, you are quite simply in a place where time has stood still. From the river looking toward the back of the house, the River Rock stone gives the it an air of grandeur against the modest green siding; it is a comfortable elegant looking home to be proud of. When I ask Mike and Beth what are their favorite things about the house? Mike says “The open ness, one room goes into another and we hardly have any doors that close. The porch opens to the kitchen, that opens out to the yard and on a summer day it’s just perfect.” Beth says “The location.” We couldn’t agree more. Thank you so much for opening up your home to us and letting us take a peek.

This year marks their 25th anniversary, and an amazing time-lapse video on YouTube tells their story beginning to end, all photographed by our great friend and photographer Ken Scott. Check it out. It’s very cool and will give you an idea of how many people are involved in making it beautiful. The Friendly Garden Club’s mission is to provide education and to promote the love of gardening, landscape and floral design; and to encourage civic beautification and environmental responsibility. Members are women of all ages and backgrounds. Some are Master Gardeners, flower show judges and landscape design consultants. These ladies have some serious flower power! In addition, five other private gardens are featured with perennial beds, raised beds, small veggie gardens on a city lot, use of unusual garden art to enhance the yard and waterfall.

“If I had known grandchildren were this much FUN I would have had them first.”

LEFT: Nana Trish Marek with her Beloved Granddaughter Charlie BELOW: Charlie with hugs from Mom Alyssa

KID-SAFE CHECKLIST FOR GRANDPARENTS

A Nana’s Love Triumphs! Trish Marek’s little 3-year-old granddaughter Charlotte (Charlie) Tallieu was diagnosed with the unthinkable last summer. After a checkup with the Grand Traverse ophthalmologist to understand why her eye was shaking, more intense MRIs were ordered. They found Little Charlie was in the rare one percent with an intracranial tumor. After the initial devastating diagnosis and shock, what followed has been a whirlwind of visits to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital where Charlie was slated for 42 chemotherapy treatments. She has bravely endured them, smiling through the whole ordeal. Nana Trish whipped up a Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser to support the extra expenses her daughter (Alyssa) and their family would incur. They were overwhelmed at the outreach and support this wonderful community showered upon them, (they fed 475 people!) and we have great news to report. Just last week, the doctor said, “If he hadn’t known there was a tumor there, he wouldn’t know it now!” What Amazing News that was to Nana’s ears. If her September scan looks good, Charlie may even start weaning off the chemo treatments. Yaay! I’m sure Nana’s miraculous hugs helped, too. They are magic, you know.

If the grandkids are coming for an extended summer sleepover, the excitement of getting to spend quality time with these “Little loves of your life” may have you carried away. Shopping and stocking up on grandma’s favorite treats will have you busy. But don’t forget safety first! Number one priority: Is the house Kid Safe? It may have been a while since these little treasures have been around. You can’t for a second underestimate what they can get into and how quick they are. Those little terrors are cute but stealthy.

1. Bathroom and Kitchen cabinets that house cleaning supplies need childproof locks. Or you can simply empty them of anything harmful while the kids are there.

2. Drawers with knives or anything sharp: These need to be locked up and moved out of reach.

3. Toilets: You can simply keep the door closed

GOLF-RIFFIC! If you are slightly intimidated by the game of Golf with those 27 holes and regulation 4-inch holes, YOU need to know this! A bunch of wonderful ladies just like you all meet at the beautiful Mistwood Golf Course every Tuesday at 9.15am. They are called the 9.15 club also because it’s 9 holes and it’s just $15 and this includes lunch, too! Their goal is friendship building, exercise and self-improvement! You can have fun (it’s a non-competitive league!) perfecting your game with the Par 3 Course; they lovingly refer to it as “Little 9.” The holes are bright pink and made double regulation at 8 inches so you can build your confidence by actually sinking some putts! Here’s the really “Must Go” reason: It also includes Director Jeff Eccleston giving a clinic with tips and pointers. Afterwards, the ladies all enjoy their well-earned delicious lunch in the Sunset Bar and Grill. Mark it on next Tuesday’s calendar, take a friend along and tell Jeff we sent you. to bathrooms. Otherwise, you’ll want to get a baby proofing lock for the lid.

4. Pop in outlet covers for all outlets at the lower level.

5. Use safety gates for any staircases, placed at the bottom during the days and at the top at night.

6. When cooking, remember to turn handles to your pans in and away from the edge to avoid small hands pulling down hot pans.

7. Go around your home at the two-foot level and see what is within reach. If it’s breakable, harmful or irreplaceable, move it.

8. Remember your kids survived even if it was a while ago, so you’ll be fine. Be safe and have fun.

THE AMAZING AWE OF AURORA BOREALIS: A stupendous surprise to be greeted with indeed! Just came about one evening, while out enjoying the sunset at Good Harbor Beach. As the crescent moon followed (the lower white ball that is reflected in the surf) with Venus next in line ... I looked to the north and WOW the Northern Lights in all their glory.
