ay! Summer is almost upon us. We can

finally celebrate the “real” reason we all live here. Put away the UGGs and The North Face. Finally! Break out the shorts, t-shirts and sandals. And ladies, book yourselves a much needed mani–pedi. Can I get an amen? We are so blessed that we actually get to LIVE where others choose to spend their vacations! Welcome back to the sparkle of the Blue Bay as it glistens in the sun, the beach, boating, sailing, picnicking, wine tours, biking, hiking, outside dining and happy hours (my personal favorite). And let’s not forget downtown celebrations, the farmers market, outdoor music, family time and every sun-filled moment in-between. I GET BY WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS

Something’s BREWING! It’s still in the fermenting stages and will be ready in June! But Beards Brewery (can you guess?) will be worth the wait. Coming to 207a Howard Street in Petoskey from Bearded Best Friends Ben Slocum and Peter Manthel, the brewery will be offering four beers on tap and hoping for seven as they grow into their tap shoes. The idea of a brewery had been floating around for a while, and it took a “Roadtrip” from California to Michigan to set it in stone. Last summer, the bearded friends crafted and perfected recipes. (This must have involved a lot of sampling!) Once they felt their beers were “Dry Hopping,” winners onward they went! “We want to be able to share the process with people,” says Peter, “and the brewing area is completely visible behind glass.” Here’s a twist on the norm: They will have B.Y.O.F. (bring your own food). This is Peter and Ben’s commitment to Petoskey’s already vibrant cuisine community. The brewers want to enhance your dining experience, instead of competing against it. Does a Body Good Local Traverse City Native Stephanie Zalucha, loves to windsurf, and is also an avid SUPer (Stand Up Paddle Boarder.) This sport has really taken off in a big way with the ladies (let’s face it, we are far more graceful.) But the key is the amazing total body workout this gives. Steph even competed in the T.C. Waterman challenge (a new SUP race in the area.) She had so much fun she is hoping to also take part in the M22 challenge next year. Taking it down a notch, or maybe 3! The other awesome event that we credit Steph for inspiring, actually

happens every week and started in spring of 2011. Maybe you have seen these strange packs of women walking on water? Armed with only a paddleboard and totally rockin a wetsuit or bikini. It’s a local phenomenon and a super excuse for girlfriends to get together and have fun! It only happens on a Wednesday night, and sometimes there are six and sometimes up to 30! Wow! Talk about Girl Power! She extends an invitation to all the ladies out there, check out the Facebook page called Women’s SUP Nights, and join them out on the water!

“Hi, my mom’s name is Jennifer Orwig and I think she is pretty amazing. This year has been a rough year and yet mom has taken everything in stride. From having to help my younger brother with his anxiety over starting high school and not being able to leave the neighborhood for a month, to working as a full time assistant teacher at Montessori and trying to sell her artwork out of our house. She is always ready to help and is not a stranger to hugs. Mom always knows the right things to say in any situation that comes up and how to tackle it well with grace and wisdom. She is always working so hard and trying to provide a better life for us and now I believe a well-deserved prize and recognition of her efforts should be in order. To boast a little of its past before we boast about the food, the restaurant building was originally constructed as a grist mill. In the mid-1950s, it was converted into a fine dining establishment designed by the then-famed local architect Earl Young, who was known for his curvaceous roof lines and flowing architecture! The lovingly cut pieces now make their way to Jen’s busy warehouse in Traverse City, where Leah and Maggie pair them with the perfect shoe partner. The bands are handcrafted to the actual shoe, which isn’t just any old flip flop! It’s an original comfortable surf shoe, and so high end we will call them sandals. Normal flip flops are a few bucks and of throwaway quality, not to be compared at all. Seamstresses and local artisans work their magic from here, and hand place every dazzling Austrian Swarovski Crystal making every shoe a one of a kind signature piece.

Wardrobe Woes Should you let your three-year-old waltz out the door wearing a purple tutu, a polka-dot sweater and green galoshes? Many moms wonder when to relinquish some control over their kids’ outfit choices, and where to draw boundaries. Here are a few ideas. OUT OF SIGHT OUT OF MIND

Limit the clothing that is visible to your child, and clear out seasonal clothes and shoes. Keep dressing up clothes away with the toys. Keep swimwear with the towels. And if it’s too small, take it out. OFFER CHOICES

Tweens Home Alone? Summers suck for the working mom, especially when you’re leaving tweens and teens back at the ranch with idle time on their hands. While you slog away at work, your kids are popping pizzas in the oven and forgetting they are there, or welcoming friends through the front door and unleashing the dog to roam the neighborhood. Where is Mrs. Doubtfire when you need her? So what’s a working mom to do? You can try to have a list of rules of course, no people in the house, no parties, the usual stuff, and hope they are followed! Try to come home for lunch if possible, the one thing we can suggest is you know your kid for the most part. Use common sense; if you feel they are mature enough, you just have to bite the bullet. It’s one of those “letting go” moments we all despise. Surprise visits to see what is going on are a great idea. Randomly send neighbors or relatives over for a kid check! As long as the house doesn’t burn down (check your insurance policy’s current!) you’ll live through it.

Window of Opportunity What After reading our last issue in a doctor’s office Ralph Perrier sent us a wonderful email, complimented the magazine and then made the bold statement: YOU NEED TO MEET MY WIFE! After reading his glowing email, and researching her outstanding work, we agreed, WE DO NEED TO MEET YOUR WIFE! Now you get to meet her too.

Amy Perrier is an amazingly talented painter. But not just any old painter, Amy’s stunning acrylic work is all meticulously hand painted BACKWARDS. No she doesn’t have dyslexia, which is the first thing that springs to mind, although she did joke she is really good at puzzles. Her art quite simply just begins where traditional art usually ends. Front to back, or Vice Versa. Her creations are all painted in reverse on glass, mostly on old windows which she res44

cues from barns, and her more modern work in frames. She can literally see the image in her head that she is about to paint, and her visions come from a collection of thirty years’ worth of photographs. Originally from Bellaire, Amy had watched her mom paint as a child and was naturally inspired to follow in her footsteps. She moved down to Florida, frequenting boat docks to paint scenery which covered the rent. After raising two sons she moved back up north to help with her aging parents.

Amy credits husband Ralph, “If it wasn’t for his wonderful support this wouldn’t be.” When she expressed she’d like a real studio Ralph stated “What do we need to do, to make that happen?” Stepping into her studio, you become a visitor in an “artists multi colored dream world,” right off the living room. Jimmy Buffet songs ring out and put you in a Key West state of mind. (Margarita? Anyone) there are tins full of brushes, rollers, scalpels and a plethora of paint. The wooden floor is splattered with paint, (think Josephs Technicolor dream coat) as is the table, the blow dryer, and even the bottle of Windex! Most eye catching are Amy’s jeans, whimsically covered in a painted palette of every color known to man! (Plan B: if the pictures stop selling, she could retail these and make a bundle.)

Some paintings can have up to 27 layers of paint, she loves the way it looks, and is so inspired by texture it has led Amy to branch out to pursue Abstract Painting on canvas. Of her original work, last year alone Amy sold 110 paintings, her creations are very affordable and she finds huge joy that sometimes hers is the first original piece of art chosen to hang in a home. She’s spent many years working the art show circuit and will travel to Lansing soon for her first National Show. Her work is locally acclaimed and has even graced the walls of the Dennos Museum.

All around the studio hangs her work, because the layers of paint actually sit facing the back of the painting, the front sometimes is hard to believe it’s real. The images, flat against the shiny reflective surface of the glass, look so “Picture Perfect” they leave you breathless. Layer upon layer quietly sits behind, telling a much bigger

MEET BRIAN MOHR, awesome dad to Dillyn and Brady and fabulous husband to Erica. On any given day there are culinary delights coming out of this kitchen worthy of Emeril and Wolfgang Puck himself! How did this come to be we asked? Well Grandma Mohr, was the queen of comfort food, his mom, not so much, she had one special dish “Merlin’s Magic Chicken.” Luckily Brian still grew up strong and handsome. (Good genes no doubt) His travels took him to Park City Utah where his roommate’s girlfriend was a Culinary School Trained Chef, and it helped shape his passion, “Eating is an Experience” says Brian. He is raising his kids that way too, no microwave chicken nuggets or “from the box” mac and cheese in this kitchen! The kid’s favorite dishes include hanger steak, blackened salmon, and they even eat anchovies! Brian loves to shop fresh at the farmers market, cooks low fat and low sodium; he has his own recipe book of tried and true delights, he even makes his own spices and dressings! Here are a few Brian Tips: Don’t skimp on the cheese, Clean up as you go and the Food Processor is a must! He owns 3 in different sizes! In the kitchen he is a total perfectionist, but he admits he is a horrible baker! What a relief, we were beginning to believe he was perfect!

JAKE’S PASTA DEL GIORNO (Pasta of the day)

Northern Italian pasta dish we have been cooking for years. It’s our mac and cheese. Easy to fix, healthy and great for leftovers. 1

lb. lean pork Italian sausage or Italian Turkey Sausage, which Jake prefers)

1 1/2 lb. Rigatoni 3 Tbsp. chopped garlic (the more the better!) 2 cups grated Parmesan cheese 3/4 cup olive oil 1 large bunch of green kale, stalks chopped off and torn (like spinach) Red Pepper flakes to taste Salt and Pepper to taste Sautee garlic in olive oil add sausage and cook completely. Set aside. Boil water for pasta, first steam Kale and remove, cook pasta In Kale water, drain and add to Sausage and oil/garlic, toss with Parmesan cheese. Add in kale, toss more and add red pepper flakes with salt and pepper to taste. For extra burn have Sriracha sauce on the table and dab a few drops on top. Serves 4-6.

We have been fortunate enough to travel to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for many years during spring break. Every year when we return I have tried to recreate some of the delicious carne asada steak that is found in almost every restaurant in Cabo. My kids love carne asada and this recipe is one of several attempts at making it.

Variation: use dark Mexican beer in place of tequila and Worcestershire Sauce instead of soy and add a little white vinegar. When using flank or flat iron I like give it several hits with a meat mallet to help tenderize and break apart the muscle fibers. Mix all ingredients. Marinate steak for at least 2 hours. Grill until desired temperature. These are thin cuts of beef and cook quickly. The steak can be served by itself or cut into strips for tacos, burritos, etc.

BY JAKE ANDERSON Hmmm. Why do I like to cook?… Cuz I like to eat, Good Food. The better I cook it, the better I like it. I like to please others. When they dig into my meal I watch their faces and hope they like it. I take it very personal. I aim to please. I didn’t start cooking till I met Cindy’s family. (Wife is Realtor Cindy Anderson) Leave it to those Italians. I never knew that kind of food existed. The holidays would start out with breakfast and flow into brunch then lunch. A few snacks after that, then the hors d’oeuvres come out. Massive diner then desert, Constant Food. It’s painful but great. My grandma taught me how to bake pies and cakes. But as far as meals go she was a bit utilitarian. They were good for you… not mm Good! I like to play with recipes not make them. I have not mastered that skill… yet. My favorite tool… The food processor.

and pizzas. Bread is one of those things you have to be consistent with. No a little this a little that, that’s how you make door stops! (Found that out the hard way!) Sour dough is my passion. My wife wishes I had gotten in to a little cleaner hobby, but likes the results. Pizzas are fun. My daughter Alex loves pizza night. She invites all her friends over and we have a Pizzathon. Everyone takes a place on the island. I plop down a ball of homemade dough in front of them. They start rolling and flinging doughs into the air. Some make it down in one piece, some don’t. Each girl makes her own style pizza and in the oven it goes. They watch through to glass as it bubbles and drips. When they are done back to the island they go for a PIZZA feast. We all taste each other’s, it’s a great time and memories are made.

I bought the good one and I’m glad I did. That thing works. Some tomatoes, spice, olive oil and Bam… pizza sauce. I have been getting into baking breads

hat if the Hokey Pokey is what it’s all about? My personal interpretation of this saying is that “We should take life lightly, enjoy the fun and care about the little things in the world!” This saying lovingly hangs on the wall in Dawn and Rob Shields’ home in their “Fun Room,” and it is their core family belief. Dawn and Rob along with their two sons, Jack (15) and Robbie (13 in June), moved up here from Chicago in July of 2010. They moved here as many do dreaming of raising their kids with a better lifestyle. As Dawn so eloquently puts it, “Traverse City was just urban enough, that the kids wouldn’t feel we had plopped them in a little Podunk town in the middle of nowhere!” Both Dawn and Rob are Footwear Importers (and my new BFFs; all their samples are my size! Yaay!!) they work the wholesale end of the shoe world. They are fortunate that their office can be at home. Their only requirement was that home had to be near an airport. Traverse City fit the bill perfectly.

When house hunting, Dawn fondly recalls, “We knew we always wanted to retire to water, but we wanted to find a house that would work for our family now and still work in a few more years when we are old and stairs would be a challenge! So we deliberately picked a rancher!” The house they chose is an older one on Deepwater Point. It has a killer view and comes with its very own private beach! The first time they actually came to see it, they spent a lot of time just on the beach, as the poor realtor forgot the key. So they quickly became acquainted and fell in love with the view of East Bay, and they were only able to admire the house from afar. (Maybe that was Cindy Anderson’s master plan?) It worked! They knew right away that they wanted to make major modifications. They came from a McMansion in Chicago. This was to be an adjustment, but all the more a great challenge to dive into. much bigger, and they wanted a nice big open island. They also knew right away they would totally renovate the existing garage to create more space and make room for their home office. Where the garage sat before, now you find two large bedrooms and a bathroom. A new garage now sits in front of the old one. Their new kitchen is worthy of any large event and has a beautiful view of the crystal bay. The granite they chose reminds them of looking down into the crystal clear water and seeing the colors shining back from the rocks below. Part of being a family, of course, is immersing yourself in the community around you, and the Shields are no exception. Mom’s taxi service is always at the ready! Robbie is in the Old Town Playhouse Young Company, a budding actor and a gifted singer. Theater has been a love he has

followed since the age of 7, although he was a little hesitant to share this as “the new kid,” worried that he might be labeled as Robbie the Theater geek. The irony is that at the young age of 11, he didn’t realize that we embrace the fine arts here in Traverse City. He kept his talents on the Lowdown, quietly tried out last year for a production and scored a major role! They now applaud him! He also has an endearing love for animals and even donates to the animal shelter. He also is an aquatic kid and sports gills just like a fish! Just kidding, but his mom tells me, “He loves Water anything.” Jack, on the other hand, has two completely different passions, one in the winter and one in the summer! You will mostly find him at Mt. Holiday, snowboarding the slopes, being a typical teenager and eating Michelle’s famous nachos. So much so that Dawn and Rob supported the nonprofit club by purchasing a Parking Space next

year! His other pastime is sailing, and you will find him trimming the sails and working the winches as part of the High School Sailing Program with TACS. Rob has been in the shoe industry long enough to drop names that made me drool! He worked as a buyer for Nordstrom for years. On his days off, he catches some rounds of golf; we even booked our photo shoot around it! Good for him. Dawn also wanted to make sure that we gave some awareness to a little known local charity that she does work with. Dawn tells me about “Food Rescue, it’s a part of Goodwill, and they go to local grocery stores and restaurants and collect the perishable foods that would be thrown away. They literally deliver them the same day to food pantries in Traverse City.” Dawn feels so blessed they are living such the true “Up North” life. “I know it sounds so cliché, but we pinch ourselves all the time. That view right out of your window brings you back to what is important in your life. We truly count our blessings every day.” The other sign that hangs in their home is right in the kitchen, boldly reminding you, “Because Nice Matters!” You certainly are some NICE people.

Barb Levi is one of those wonderful people. “Peepers” is a pre-kindergarten program that is designed to foster the exploration of nature in preschoolers. Every Tuesday, preschoolers explore a different seasonal nature theme. Barb, a locally retired schoolteacher, volunteers as the lead educator in our Peepers program in the fall and spring. Barb has more than 25 years of experience in early education, many of those spent working in the Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools system. She has a passion for nature as well as a talent for inspiring exploration and curiosity of our natural world in children. Barb helped start and shape the Peepers program, and has been volunteering with the Grand Traverse Conservation District as an educator since spring 2009. She now has the pleasure of sharing her passion with her own grandson, Hayden, who regularly attends the Peepers sessions. Her commitment to education, nature and inspiring the next generation of conservation stewards has made her an invaluable resource to the Grand Traverse Conservation District and the greater Grand Traverse community.
