You want her to be loved, respected and treated with dignity. So do we. At Boardman Lake Glens, we nurture our residents’ independence by promoting dignity and choice within a setting of professional, compassionate service. Assistance is always offered, never imposed, and our full-service lifestyle gives our residents and their families flexibility and peace of mind.

A

few years after Dad passed away, we finally convinced Mom to sell the house and move in with us. But Tom and I were busy with our careers and the kids were starting families of their own. It got to the point where Mom was alone just as much as before. The few friends she still had rarely visited and she seemed a bit lost. She always did so much for me . . . and I always felt guilty that I wasn’t doing enough for her. When we discovered Boardman Lake Glens, everything changed for the better. Mom has her own place with her own things, and gets the care she needs without having to wait for me. She spends quality time with new friends every day and even the grandkids enjoy visiting. Her appetite improved. She exercises and feels better. She loves the staff and she’s always raring to go, making our time together less stressed and more enjoyable. I just love seeing her smile again.

Our services are designed to help residents and their families enjoy each day to the fullest. Service plans are tailored to meet individual needs and you only pay for the services you need. You never have to pay for things you don’t use. And rather than moving from one building or wing to another as their needs change, our residents stay in their own apartments — in friendly, familiar surroundings. For couples, this means care can be customized for each individual, allowing spouses to stay together even when their care needs are different. Our dedicated team’s family spirit and our unique approach to care are just two reasons why you’ll love to call Boardman Lake Glens home. To learn more about the benefits of living in our beautiful community, stop by or call Rose Selkirk at 231.225.9735 to arrange a visit. Keep in touch with us on Facebook!

Medical excellence. Made for kids. Treating a child is not the same as treating an adult. This simple fact led to the creation of the largest, most advanced children’s hospital in West Michigan—where more than 50 pediatric specialties and programs meet the unique needs of kids, from infancy to age 18. For parents and children alike, there’s no place quite like it. Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. Creating greater possibilities for kids.

Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you’ll look back and realize they were the big things ROBERT BRAULT Four year old Teaghan and Mom, Teri Gorsline

S

ummer has been a scorcher! It

has also been a record breaker in sales for area businesses. This brought us locals another record breaker that made us want to SCREAM: We’re talking travel time in getting about town! What normally takes five minutes, took a lot longer. But it’s the blessing and the curse—all part and parcel to this wonderful BAY LIFE home! We get to live here, and that’s pretty darn lucky! That said, with fall real life kicks in again. Summer is done. School is back in (yay!!!), and some sense of normalcy returns. (Well, kinda—whatever normalcy is. Let me know when you figure that out.) Why not challenge yourselves to change the old familiar schedule and routine to fall into some new habits of organization and exercise. (Check out the little help ideas on the Feeling Good page.) Remember to take in the abundance of nature while it’s showing off and pluming its brilliant colors. Autumn’s wonderful, stunning hues grace the pages in this issue, and they’re captured with sharp intensity. Robert deJonge’s cover shot is exquisite and awesome. Amateur photographers Jim Sorbie and John Gessner’s pictures dazzle. And of course, Jim Anderson’s views from above are exceptional. It was a brutal task, only being able to pick a few photographs. Make sure you seek out their work long after you leave these pages. Also, take a moment to reflect on the vast landscape of what used to be an Up North Secret: Sleeping Bear Dunes. The Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail is a real goal—27 miles of non-motorized, paved trail on its way to a “Becoming.” It will offer a safe, fun place for families, taking away the worry of dangerous

traffic teetering too close to our children. Unfortunately, we’ve had some tragedies this summer and our hearts go out to those families. Let’s make a pact to join together and make this happen sooner rather than later for all our sakes. Dancing off the pages and into your wallets are local “stars,” as once again the phenomenon that is SwingShift and the Stars comes to town for its fifth year. We shot the “Stars” on location in their day jobs (please don’t quit them) and uncover their fears of “Breaking a leg, or having a wardrobe malfunction on the dance floor of the City Opera House!” If you have never experienced SwingShift and the Stars, you are truly missing out! It is a fabulous event. Our travels also take us up to Harbor Springs in this issue, the charming town that is our very own northern version of The Hamptons. The town is alive in elegance and old rituals, and we introduce you to two of its famed inhabitants: Matt Bugera, owner of the New York restaurant with all its Victorian elements, and Trisha Witty, the beautiful and self-taught oil painter who is celebrating the 20th anniversary of her gallery. That’s enough of a teaser. I don’t want to write a whole book (again)! Of course, we hope you love this issue and read it cover to cover as you’ve done in the past. What else could we do to make it better? What more do you want to read about? Are there any more places you wished you could find in it? Let us know. It’s what we live for! That’s why we call it BAY LIFE! We are all in it together.

If there is anything MORE ANNOYING in the world than having people talk about you, it is certainly having no one talk about you. OSCAR WILDE

FOREIGN EXCHANGE Just the word “foreign” conjures up the excitement of new experiences, cultures and a whole new world to explore, a “something out of the ordinary.” THE EXCHANGE will be all that and more. The store/salon is a brand new extension of Pavlova, the impeccably stylish salon right next door that is owned by Anne and Pierre Pujos. But in no way a mirror image, The Exchange will be Edgy European Bohemian Chic. It is inspired by their daughter, Ines, who is herself a young, hip, vibrant and talented 21-year-old writer and poet. The Exchange will be the place to find clothes from an up-and-coming Parisian designer, one-of-a-kind fragrances, elite makeup, jewelry and eclectic pieces for you and your home from all around the globe. It’s an unconventional store, an Avant Garde twist on the norm, and THE place to pick up something WOW. It will also become a gathering place for the trendy and cool, with a groovy salon in the rear. Just like when Brew opened on Front Street, by this time next year, we’ll never know how we lived without it! OPENING SEPTEMBER 15

What a Girl Wants! Think Champagne & Pearls and you envision ladylike luxury. In Leland, it is refined, old-fashioned elegance. Teri McFarlan has been collecting pretty and feminine antiques for years to open her vintage boudoir-type boutique, CHAMPAGNE & PEARLS. “I kept filling up the basement, telling my husband Mike, ‘It’s for my shop I’m going to open.’” (You may know her hubby from the Cherry Capital Cadillac/Subaru ads on TV) Of course, like any husband, he probably thought she was just having fun shopping, and the dream of the store would never really happen. But here it is, filled with elements that delicately fuse and intermingle old with new. Here you will find graceful, dainty luxuries to make you feel pretty, from exquisite jewelry, clothing and personal treasures to decorating accessories and local Leelanau aromatic candles. P.S. I’m sure Teri would like us to point out, she seldom has time to recline on this chaise lounge! 106 N Main Street, Leland • 231-256-2438

Over the Moon Carol Buckel has travelled to the moon and back to bring you the coolest commodities for your home. Her new store named COTTAGE MOON is on 8th Street and its official theme is Vintage: Cottage: Industrial. But after my exclusive peek inside, I say, “just divine.” I oohed and aahed at everything! Carol is no stranger to adding the finishing touches to a family’s dwelling. She had an interior design company for many years in Midland. She sold it in 2007, before she made her big move Up North. It’s been a family affair to get the doors open, and she volunteered her two grown sons to help. One pitched in with the heavy lifting and the other created her bewitching logo, which you can admire when you see the sign proudly hanging outside. The store is filling up daily with new arrivals, so be sure to make your visit to the moon soon. When you do, you’ll be over the moon in Design Heaven.

K.I.S.S. Keep it simple, silly! Simple formulas and free smells are what you will encounter when you step into GREAT LAKES BATH & BODY on the corner of Front and Cass streets. Delicious handcrafted soaps, lotions, shampoos and body butters in flavors like Calendula, Sage and Lemongrass are all made with plant oils and other natural ingredients. The store represents “dipping her toe into retail” for owner and mom of three little ones (6, 5 & 3), Lynn Rodenroth, who is keenly aware that “people are more ingredient-savvy these days.” Her wholesale business of four years has already enjoyed success in the hotel industry, gracing in-room spa baskets in hotels around the area. She is an advanced, certified soap maker studying to be the first certified Master Soap Maker in Michigan! On the mom end, she also creates good clean fun by involving her kids in the process, too. The flowers aligned in her beloved garden and the perfect space popped up! Carrie’s green thumb has made it bloom. Welcome to GARDEN GROUNDS. It’s way more than just a little coffee shop, with sandwiches, local scones, bread, healthy snacks, and even boasts a Local Market with Michigan made treats from all around the area. They opened just a few weeks ago, with the help of husband Peter and her kids whilst home on summer vacation and they are already enjoying rave reviews. A Bakers Dozen - More Dozens more room and dozens more delicious and nutritious eats that is! POTTER’S BAKERY has made the big move from next to Buritts Market and has become a part of the Warehouse District on Hall St. The family-owned bakery is in its 3rd generation of owners, and was founded in 1929. That 8th street location was the original and is still open. Although Kathleen shared with me Grandpa Potter actually opened in 1928, but had to close for 8 months due to sugar rationing. But Sugar isn’t the only focus in their new digs; they have added a café and will be offering lunch fare of sandwiches, salads, soups, quiches and ice cream! Parking will be a whole lot easier too, especially for your must have grab-and-go donuts and coffee. Kathy’s daughter, Becky who is the 4th generation will be managing the store, and she gave us donuts to thank us for stopping by! Why did she did do that? Great marketing, we’ll be back for sure. See you there.

Meat Master It’s a Meat Dream Come True for new owners Mark and his wife Stephanie Wilson. He’s patiently laid in wait for Mike Deering to willingly hand over the reigns and let him buy the Old town institution that is MAXBAUER’S SPECIALTY MARKET. “Nope not yet”, was the answer for years! His wish just came true, it’s a meaty tale, and (a butcher twist on the fairy tale) Mark couldn’t be happier as he believes his life is fulfilled by being a part of family’s special occasions. It’s not about the meat, it’s the moment shared, and the memories made, but at every event the star attraction is always “What’s for Dinner.” Wilson previously worked for Deering at Maxbauer, and the pair remained close since. Mark had moved on but never gave up on his driving passion for the butcher business. The store, opened in 1913 by Albert and Tony Maxbauer and run by Mike Deering’s uncles Barney and Tom Deering from 1950 until he bought it from them in 1980, has a long tradition of focusing on quality and customer relationships. Seeing how elated this makes the Wilson family I’m sure it will last for another 100 years. 231-947-7698. 407 South Union Street • Traverse City HANDING OVER THE REIGNS is Mike Deering (center) to New Maxbauer Owner’s Mark and Stephanie Wilson. It was the picturesque village of Harbor Springs in the year 1899. Horse-drawn carriages were the mode of transportation, and on the corner of State and Bay Streets, The Kensington Hotel burned down. In its place rising from the elegant Victorian ashes, THE NEW YORK was born.

A Nostalgic Evening

A delicious “special” of the day Sauteed Scallops. BELOW: The exterior Victorian buidling of The New York Restaurant.

Now a classic vintage building, “The New York est. 1904” sign proudly hangs, claiming its place in the memory and history of Harbor Springs. Housed within and keeping alive the elegance of the period is the namesake Grand Restaurant, THE NEW YORK. For this date night, we are taking a timeless romantic journey into an enchanting world of long ago. The original pressed tin ceilings are exquisitely framed in ornate moldings, etched glass dividers are simply set in oak wood, elaborate hunter green striped wallpaper is graced with historic pictures—even the fans are authentic. There are three sections in all. As in any old building, you walk through one to get to the other. In the first room, you can be a spectator, viewing the world outside: Huge picture windows prevail to look out over the harbor. Walking through, Tiffany lamps delicately dangle sparkling all in a row above fresh white 20

linen tabletops. Across the way is the welcoming bar, decked out in brass and seating for the thirsty. Stepping up, the last room boasts two big cozy booths and space to party! This noble place in time hasn’t always been this way, though. It went through its ups and downs and most of the rich history can be read on the menu. In the late ‘60s and ‘70s it was even a coffee shop where the local police had their own key to brew up a pot and await the delivery of donuts! In June 1990, the current owner Matt Bugera bought the restaurant and its building. Matt grew up downstate, but he had summered here since the ‘70s. “It Just felt like home,” he said. Of his passion for cooking he told me, “My mom and dad were in the corporate world so I would have starved to death had I not learnt to cook.” He attended the very prestigious Culinary Institute of New York for two years. The restaurant had served breakfast, lunch and dinner. Matt decided to do one thing and do it great! He decided to only open for dinner. To this day 22 years later, The New York only serves dinner. When Matt opened the restaurant, his dad Bill had just retired and he jumped in to help run the front of the house. While Matt blended, whisked, basted, roasted, pureed and souffléd in the back, his dad took care of overseeing the staff (a staff Matt takes pride in, who work year round and have loyally been with him for years). Bill also found “grape” inspiration to create a wine menu. The bountiful wine menu is

reason alone to take a trip here, as heavy as a bible; it is 17 pages in all and lists more than 300 wines from around the world. The opening page quotes an old English Toast, “May our love be like good wine ... Grow stronger as it grows older.” Bill Miller is the current manager and sommelier. I asked him to share a quote on wine. “The best wine that goes with your meal is the wine you like.” While we are still on the subject of drinks, The World Famous Bloody Mary is the MUST HAVE, a tradition kept and the recipe is actually handwritten on the wall in the basement!

Welcoming you in is owner/chef Matt Bugera

The menu at The New York is an array of tried-and-true consistent favorites that locals don’t like to see changed, like the Lamb Shank and a Half-Roasted Boneless Chicken—Matt learned the hard way never to take these off the menu! So Matt’s compromise is to have amazing specials and throw in some spontaneous flavors to mix it up; consider the Grilled Red Snapper in a Veracruz Sauce. Also, there’s an Early Dining Special, 2-for-1 entree when seated by 6 p.m.—definitely a reason to arrive early. Dessert is something to celebrate and make room for here because all are made on the premises. Homemade is always best! The New York is a step back in time to a stately period where innocence and chivalry reigned. Life was simple, and romance was pure poetry. Or in the real world, it is a wonderful, well-deserved evening out away from the kids and dog. It’s a night you’ll never forget. SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2012 | BAY LIFE NORTH

The first dance off is Sept 21st at the City Opera House, here is a first intimate look at the Stars and their thoughts so you can pick and root for your favorite before the Big Night.

My wife & I took a ballroom dancing class through NMC 15 years ago. The only thing I remember is that you are supposed to “frame up” your partner! What was the reaction of your friends and family? Uhhh, their first reaction was unprintable! They told me I’m crazy, but to go for it and have fun. Tell us your driving passion for your charity, and why you chose it? I got involved with the OTP initially because I enjoy attending the theatre. I knew nothing about the countless number of hours of hard work and commitment it took by the dedicated volunteers to bring a production to the stage. Over the past few years I’ve realized how the OTP is an integral part of our local community. Any fears? Anything keeping you awake at night that scares you about this? I’ve embarrassed myself enough over the years, to know that even if my pants fall off in mid-dance, I’ll get through it and the sun will rise in the morning. I just hope I don’t get my butt kicked every month! What part are you most excited about? That my participation in this event increase the exposure of the Old Town Playhouse in the community. I’m happy and humbled they are letting me represent the organization. Why will YOU win, and why should our readers choose you and your charity? I will win because I’m a very competitive person. You could call me a Type AA+ personality. Everyone should consider supporting the Old Town Playhouse as we provide a valuable community asset to all ages---from children through adults to seniors. There’s something for everyone at the Playhouse. Or, maybe they just want to see some tall guy fall on his can while attempting to dance---that’ll work too! Just as long as they make their donation to the Old Town Playhouse.

Have you ever done anything like this before, any dance experience in your closet? Growing up I tried ballet, tap and figure skating. I chose to throw myself into figure skating. I ended up hitting the ice for about 10 years! Skating taught me how to be graceful, competitive and passionate. I’ve always been quite the ham, so that helped too. What was the reaction of your friends and family? “You’re doing a dancing competition? The Erika who is the biggest klutz I know?” But then it was “Erika it’s going to be like Dancing With the Stars starring YOU!” My friends and family are honest, but always supportive and my biggest cheerleaders! Tell us your driving passion for your charity, and why you chose it? Michigan Blood is my charity. The money stays in the mitten to help our fellow Michiganders! A small blood or monetary donation can truly go a long way, to help people suffering from Cancer, lifethreatening emergencies, and many other diseases that require donors like us. Any fears? Anything keeping you awake at night that scares you about this? Other than breaking my leg/ankle/neck/elbow/face on the floor? I’ll break just one leg as a souvenir! I’m nervous, but really looking forward to this. What part are you most excited about? That’s easy – getting all glammed up! I love dressing up and getting into character. I’m also excited to see my fellow dancers bring their A-game to the stage! It’s going to be the best SwingShift EVER, right!? Why will YOU win, and why should our readers choose you and your charity? All right, listen. I’m going to be honest here. I’m as competitive as Monica from “Friends” and I will try anything once! I’m going to put my all into this – and I’m going to work my butt off! I want to raise awareness for Michigan Blood and I want people to have fun at the same time. What better combination is there!? Please help me support this great cause!

Have you ever done anything like this before, any dance experience in your closet? My wife and I took about 3 months of dance lessons before our wedding, my instructor told me, “I’ve never seen anyone that dances as much like a robot as you do! Just relax and try to be more smooth and fluid.” What was the reaction of your friends and family? My friends and family know me to be an energetic, enthusiastic person – so it wasn’t a surprise to them. Tell us your driving passion for your charity, and why you chose it? I’ve been a dentist for 20 years, and I’ve always believed that I have a responsibility to give back to the community to help those in need. There is a very large number of people in this area who cannot afford dental care at all – and this will make a real difference in their lives. Any fears? Anything keeping you awake at night that scares you about this? That voice keeps ringing through my head: “I’ve never seen anyone that dances as much like a robot as you do!” I’m hoping that I can learn to become more graceful and fluid – but if not, I’m just going to have to embrace my robotic dancing! What part are you most excited about? I’m incredibly proud to have been chosen to represent Traverse Health Clinic, and I’m really excited to help bring awareness of the existence of the clinic – but most of all, to help them out financially. Why will YOU win, and why should our readers choose you and your charity? If I win, it will be due to having a dance partner who is a miracleworker. I’m counting on my enthusiasm and energy to be evident as well – I want to go out on the dance floor and have a great time. But it’s really all about the charities, and the importance of providing access to dental care for our neighbors who cannot afford it themselves. A great smile can change the world. Go Team Teeth!

Have you ever done anything like this before, any dance experience in your closet? On Reformation Sunday I wear a kilt and sometimes dance a few steps in front of the congregation. I also have taken a dance lesson to help me get through the many wedding receptions I have attended. What was the reaction of your friends and family? Laughter and disbelief were the two most common responses. “I can’t believe you are doing this” and “This I have to see” were often included in the comments. Once the reality has set in, what are you doing to prepare for your starring role? I thought about prayer, but being retired I was not sure what my status was in that department. So, I decided to rely on the treadmill, yoga and pickleball. Tell us your driving passion for your charity, and why you chose it? The need for local food assistance increases monthly and realizing that much good food is thrown away, some friends and I began Food Rescue. Now we pick up and deliver to 42 pantries and shelters in our area. Nutritious food that would have gone to the dump. All of this is done at no cost to the donors or recipients. Any fears? Anything keeping you awake at night that scares you about this? The only thing that concerns me is tripping my partner. What part are you most excited about? Having a great time. Seeing old friends and making new ones, and knowing that participating in SwingShift will help others know how they can participate in getting fresh, nutritious food to people who need it. Why will YOU win, and why should our readers choose you and your charity? Regardless of whether my partner and I receive top honors or have the highest score, the hungry men women and children of this area are the winners because of the money raised through participation in SwingShift. 24

Have you ever done anything like this before, any dance experience in your closet? No, but I once danced the night away with the emcee at a dance club in Cabo San Lucas! I love to dance!

I’m a single-mom myself. It is not an easy road. I’d had in my head for a while that I’d like to be involved with something that mentors young women and particularly young or single mothers. My heart is with these women. SingleMOMM works at the personal level with these women to provide mentoring and support in reaching goals or just plain getting through. The stars aligned that I could dance for them, as I’d secretly wanted to do SwingShift. Any fears? Anything keeping you awake at night that scares you about this? Heck yes! I am concerned I’ll make a fool of myself. I can’t wait to get over it! In addition, I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to some anxiety about the amount of time this is going to require during these 4 months. What part are you most excited about?

What was the reaction of your friends and family? My friends and family are very excited for me. My beautiful daughters Courtney (15) and Anja (13) will be my biggest cheer leaders! As well as my fashion consultants, They Rock!

Would it be shallow of me to say – the outfits? No seriously, I’m just really excited bring awareness to the SingleMOMM mission, and the challenge of learning something new. Why will YOU win, and why should our readers choose you and your charity? I’ve already won. I have the love of good people, and I believe in this with my whole heart. hen the secret got out on “Good Morning America” that Sleeping Bear Dunes is one of the most beautiful places in America, we (as locals) said, “Duh!”

Its palatial and awesome natural beauty captured our hearts many moons ago. Whether you grew up here or always dreamed of living here and made it a reality, we are all truly blessed to call this magnificent part of the world HOME. Living this “Bay life” is not just about being on or in the sparkling blue waters. But it’s also a family lifestyle of incorporating the God-given, cherished elements of the full four seasons outdoors. It recharges our bodies and souls, and unites us with nature. The SLEEPING BEAR HERITAGE TRAIL celebrates this strong core value for future generations to come. When finished, the proposed trail will be 27-miles long and provide a perfectly safe, “paved, non-motorized” place for families to experience and discover the wonder of nature. The trail will measure 10-feet wide and have two-foot shoulders. For those with a love of hiking, biking, walking, running and cross-country skiing, the trail will be the ultimate Utopia. It will connect villages, park attractions and campgrounds from the corner of Leelanau County to

the northern boundary of the National Lakeshore at Good Harbor Beach. It will open up a never-before-seen marvelous view that could never be achieved from just a car window. But the trail does much more than pave a way to connect one place to another. It creates a world of inspiration for quality time, whether spent exploring with those around y ou or venturing alone and losing yourself in a peaceful place of serenity. In the beginning, it was a group called the Leelanau Scenic Heritage Committee, a citizen-led organization that saw the need at least 10 years ago for a safer route for runners, bicyclists, etc. who were then sharing the busy road. This rising awareness over time resulted in progress for trails. The goal is big. This project has an estimated cost of 10 million dollars. So far, four miles are completed, (from Glen Arbor to the Dune Climb) with many more to go. Grants are being approved, but fundraising, local awareness and support will be the only way to make this dream a reality. How can you help? There are a number of monetary options, or you can just donate in-kind services and materials. Go to www. sleepingbeartrail. org. TART Trails is a qualified 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Your charitable gift is tax deductible. Photo by Jim Sorbie

Your First Breath, Took Ours Away.

Green IQ Babies and toddlers fed a healthy diet may have slightly higher IQs by the time they are eight years old than children fed less healthy foods at a young age, according to a new study. Researchers from the University of Adelaide in Australia found an early diet rich in junk foods could cost children up to two IQ points. This study provides some of the strongest evidence to date that a healthy diet from six to 24 months has a small but significant effect on IQ at eight years of age. It’s yet another reason to start them on the right, healthy eating path as babies. Diet supplies the nutrients needed for the development of brain tissues in the first two years of life. Every little IQ point matters, that’s for sure!

Snuggly and Snazzy

Bumbo Recall Just an FYI for moms: Four million Bumbo seats were just recalled, and chances are that you may have one. They have been recalled after numerous skull fractures. Babies can wiggle out of a Bumbo seat and fall to the floor. A 2007 recall warned against using Bumbo seats on elevated surfaces like chairs or countertops. Since then, at least 50 babies have fallen from a Bumbo seat while it was being used on a raised surface. What can you do? Immediately discontinue use and order a free repair kit on Bumbo’s website. The repair kit includes a restraint belt with a warning label, as well as installation instructions. Once the belt is installed, always use it when your child is in the seat. www.bumbo.com

The minute a child is lost, an alert can be sent out with additional details on what the child was wearing and where he/she was last seen. The app persists with its alerts and continues to reach wider radiuses of people until the alert has been canceled and the child has been found. The more people who have it on their phones, the more effective it will be. With the tens of millions of iPhone users out there, imagine how much safer our communities would be if everyone shared this.

(Any horror stories from losing one?) Here are a few creative ways to say So Long without the need for years of therapy! (Hopefully) • Tie it to a balloon (Waving it goodbye) • Trade it in for a New Toy • Send it to a New Baby • Big Kid Day Celebration • Leave it for the Paci Fairy If these all seem too radical, gently phase it out, (only at naptime/bedtime etc.) and build up to it. I’m sure they’ll ditch the habit by college.

Honey Honey Next time your toddlers are coughing, reach for Honey it’s a sweet treatment for a kids’ night-time cough! Try this natural cure instead of reaching for commercial medicine as Israeli researchers suggest. A teaspoon or two of honey before bedtime can safely relieve the symptoms of an upper respiratory tract infection, they report. The syrupy thickness of honey, alongside its ability to cause salivation (and thereby throat lubrication), are key characteristics that might explain its potential as an anti-coughing intervention. It’s also a lot safer too, the over the counter medicines have a greater risk for accidental overdose. So it’s better to BEE safe and BUZZ worthy!

Children seldom misquote. In fact, they usually repeat WORD FOR WORD what you shouldn’t have said. UNKNOWN

BACK TO LUNCH Stuck for kids’ lunch ideas? Here are some “Out of the Lunchbox” Ideas SMALL PORTIONS! Huge lunches can be

intimidating. Try half a sandwich and small portions of other items.

Do as I do … If you want your kids to be more active, here’s a real breakthrough study: YOU NEED TO LEAD BY EXAMPLE! It’s the simple truth. When parents get active, so do kids. You’ll be a great role model for your children, and the study also suggests that parents and kids should exercise together. So if you are a parent who doesn’t find yourself being a taxi driver to every sporting event, maybe your kids need some exercise? Get off the couch and away from the computer. Take a walk, go for a jog, get on your bikes and enjoy this wonderful Michigan crisp fall weather. Your couch, your health and your kids will thank you.

Cut sandwiches into FUN SHAPES or make a puzzle sandwich. Try a CREAM CHEESE AND JAM sandwich for a school-friendly twist on the classic pb & j—if you freeze it overnight, the jam won’t soak into the bread. [This is what my family used to do—don’t know why the jam soaking into the break was more of a problem with cream cheese and jelly.] Offer PITA BREAD with their favorite filling … meat, grated veggies, grated cheese. Impress them with a TURKEY WRAP with mayo, dried cranberries, grated Swiss or Gouda. Try carrots and HUMMUS with good bread for dipping. CHEESE AND CRACKERS are always a hit—

make sure they’re in the same shapes for minisandwiches and add some strawberries For fun, try WAFFLES cut into fingers shapes, with yogurt for dipping.

Up All Night SPONGEBOB is getting a bad rap again; he gets put in the category of “violent” media. Kids that watch age-appropriate TV before bed are 64 percent less likely to have sleep disturbances. The hour before bed is critical for tuning out violent images on the TV, computer or video games if you want your child to fall asleep easily and not have nightmares. Apparently, parents feel overwhelmed by the idea of getting rid of TV altogether, but just switching shows can make a big difference. Of course, sitting and reading a good book together before bed is a much better option!

This one is totally INTERACTIVE—cube ham, cheese and cherry tomatoes with breadsticks. On a cold day, tomato soup with grated cheese for sprinkling and GOLDFISH CRACKERS for swimming is the best. EXTRA TIPS: Let kids pick out a lunchboxes

they love, use bright small containers and invest in a thermos for hot foods in winter. You can even shake it up a little some days with stickers, a note, a silly joke or a new sparkly pencil.

ANSWER: Crooked and crowded teeth are not only difficult to keep clean and properly maintain, they can also contribute to decay, gum disease, and tooth loss. Other consequences could be abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, inefficient chewing, excessive stress on gum tissue and the bone that supports the teeth, and problems with headaches and jaw joints. When left untreated, many orthodontic problems become worse. Early intervention can be less costly than the additional dental care required to treat more serious problems that might otherwise develop. A nice smile is priceless; it can enhance physical appearance, and it can also boost self confidence as it brings the face into better proportion.

Imagine actually having a clue about your career at the tender teenage year of 15. Trisha Witty not only envisioned being an artist at that young age, she was officially launching her art career with the sale of her first painting.

The Wonderful World of WITTY

Trisha inside her Harbor Springs Galerie celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

IT ALL BEGAN AT the Petoskey Sidewalk

Sales. She remembers the painting well. “It was an oil painting, a view of the bay of Harbor Springs, and I sold it for $100! It was a huge amount of money. I was over the moon,” Trisha recalls. This year she celebrates 25 years in the art world. “I feel very grateful that I can do what I am passionate about.” The most amazing part about Trisha’s gift is that she is completely “self-taught.” She has never had any formal training or art classes. This evokes a WOW for sure! She started

46

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2012 | BAY LIFE NORTH

painting when she was 13, inspired naturally by her mother, who is also a gifted painter. Trisha grew up in the quaint village of Harbor Springs, and she gives great credit to her high school art teacher for cultivating her craft and unleashing her talent. Her teacher would allow her to be set free of boundaries, and Trisha would escape to the bluff and paint to her heart’s content. You might be surprised to learn that Trisha graduated from the University of Michigan with three majors that have nothing to do with painting: Political Science, Cultural

Anthropology and Afro-American and African Studies. She doesn’t just stand quietly still and paint either. Apparently, she is also quite the jock and loves snow skiing, running and other sports. Her other two major loves are Mosa (14) and Lucy (15), her two darling little miniature dachshunds. Back in their early years, no one had ever seen such cute little dogs in Harbor Springs. Trisha started quite the craze. Now they are the dog of choice all around town and have even led a local Halloween doggy parade (as seen in a Trisha Witty painting). The real heart of Trisha’s illuminating oils comes from years of travel. The eyecatching colors draw inspiration from the Islands of the Caribbean, the European beauty of the astonishing Amalfi Coast in Italy and the stark, sandy nomadic desert of the Middle East. She winters in California and captures the magnificent rolling hills of wine country in Napa and the palatial Pacific Coastline. These places are immortalized by Trisha with such elegance, and they’re painted exclusively with a palette knife. Visit the Witty Galerie, founded by Trisha when she was just 19 years old in 1992, and you can take a mini-trip around the world by browsing the paintings that lovingly line the walls. Trisha’s collections include original oils on linen, limited edition giclées on canvas, and signed and numbered fine art prints.

Of course, the splendor of Northern Michigan features prominently in her work. She captures the magic of Harbor Springs—sailboats serenely floating by on the bay, grand Victorian homes with lazy summer porches, and the picturesque town in all its hues of summer, fall, winter and spring. She prefers to paint landscapes and architecture, and she has dabbled in animals. The only person you will really ever see painted, though, is the artist herself in a “self-portrait.” “Why oil?” I ask. “They don’t dry quickly, so are very forgiving,” Trisha informs me, very humbly in my opinion! Her “Once in a Lifetime Originals” have loyal collectors nationally and internationally, and she has even had an exclusive exhibit at the prestigious Trump National Golf Club in Los Angeles. She may have been painting for 25 years, but Trish isn’t hanging up her easel anytime soon. Along with having her own beautiful gallery for two decades in downtown Harbor Springs, she also takes on commissioned pieces (usually in the fall), teaches a plein air art class at Bay View, and recently launched label designs for Harbor Springs Vineyards & Winery at Pond Hill Farms. It seems she is just finding her stride, along with Mosa and Lucy. The wonderful world of Witty is definitely a good place to be. Land Un-FILL

DID YOU KNOW? Rule of Thumb: Artwork should be given adequate wall space and should be hung at the eye line, which is generally 57 inches from the ground.

It’s estimated that more than 20 million mattresses find their way to landfills every year, where it can take decades for them to decompose. Each one can take up as much as 23 cubic feet of space. For that reason, many landfills charge as much as $40 to accept one. Armed with these facts it’s no wonder why Rick Chelotti co-founder of MICHIGAN MATTRESS RECYCLERS in Gaylord is as busy as the Sandman. The facility (co owned with Karen Darner) is the first mattress recycling center in the state that offers an affordable solution to the problem. It all began, because he is also the owner of the Sleep and Sit Center and every time they delivered a new mattress, they brought back the old one. So they started to tear them apart, and doing their best to recycle the inside components. After a little more research they found its becoming a trend on the West Coast, so why not here. Over 90% of the components are recyclable; they are not used to make new mattresses. The various materials are sorted, bound into bundles, and then sold to companies that use them to make other things. They offer this service as a drop off for just $5 at their Gaylord location. It may be a schlep, and a bit of a drive, but look at the land in the long run. Mother Earth will thank you. 1089 Anna Drive, Gaylord • 989-390-1913.

A LUCKY

ON LONG LAKE

“This is my Forever House,” says Lisa Brodeur. “It wasn’t really the right time when it became available, with inside information from a friend of a friend who knew another friend!” Wow, that’s like covert undercover—secret info! But take one look at the sensational lake frontage, and you’ll be impressed that they scored before the property ever hit the market!

The Brodeur “Forever House” on Long Lake RIGHT: The perfect family portrait of Fred and Lisa Brodeur with their kids, Frank, Evelyn and Audrey. SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2012 | BAY LIFE NORTH

53

Lisa and husband Fred took a look at the house that was originally on the land and decided that it wasn’t going to work. So they picked it up and moved it. This enabled them to start with a fresh canvas, all but for the original stone retaining walls. That was seven years ago, and Lisa was a brave lady to undertake building a new house while already blessed with adorable baby son Frank and pregnant with daughter Evelyn when they signed contracts. By the time the house was ready over a year later, their miracle baby Audrey was on the way! So the planned “fabulous office with a view” became the ultimate Princess bedroom instead! No problem, just go with the flow. You can feel the at-ease design of this spacious and comfortable home that often hosts impromptu parties and family get-togethers. Its killer view of Long Lake with the amazing Weeping Willow Tree greets your every glance, giving you that constant WOW factor. But little everyday kidisms bring you back to the important things in life, Love and Family, and I have never felt this more strongly in a home.

The first room we were introduced to was the Lego Room. I was led downstairs by 8-year-old Frank who was ecstatic to share. His sister Evelyn was already inside the room where a “Lego table” was graced by a Star Wars Millennium Falcon. Lining the Lego Room were books, including the complete Harry Potter series. While we were checking out the rest of the titles, the four-legged feline family members, Fluffy, Zoe and Charles, greeted us and introduced us to their waterfront view from their palatial cat condo. Guided tours of the kids’ rooms came next. Audrey’s room had a little sign that warmed my heart: “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Do You Know How Loved You Are?” I was jealous of how many princess dress up costumes hung on hooks lining the wall. The sparkling yellow gold of Belle, from Beauty and the Beast, is her most beloved. Blue for a boy echoes in Frank’s room where pirate ships, Star Wars, a guitar and a drum set prevail. On the wall here, I read, “Try Not to Be a Man of Success, So Much as a Man of Value.” What most fascinated me was the line of about 60 Matchbox cars lining

one windowsill. Here’s the freaky part: They were all color-coordinated, apparently by his sister, Evelyn, who must share a little OCD from Mom. (Lisa admitted this about keeping the many family portrait pictures “lined up and even” on the wall.) Evelyn’s room is pure pink and everything girly, from the adorable crystal chandelier to the myriad of jewelry this little lady has acquired by the age of 7. There were stunning art canvases on the wall, painted by the artist herself; she had even premiered her first gallery event out on the sidewalk the day before. At $3 each, these “Evelyn Originals” were a bargain. Apparently the ice cream truck lady didn’t have any cash, so she traded ice cream instead! Don’t mess with any of these kids if you see them out and about either. They are skilled masters in Taekwondo, and I was dazzled by their shining trophies. Back upstairs against the backdrop of the luscious lake view, angled tall ceilings

dominate and command the room; the huge picture windows take center stage, framing the sparkling lakefront. Warm and golden wooden floors flow throughout, and sitting in the corner is the grand stone fireplace with its prize possession displayed on top: the family portrait. What is the focal point of a home? The kitchen usually, and this home is no exception. But the kitchen is totally not what you would expect! There’s a huge island with gorgeous granite, and two large, ornate, glass-lidded vases. One vase is filled to the brim with precious Petoskey stones. Another is filled with brilliantly colored beach glass, hand collected on Mackinac Island where Fred grew up and the family visits often. Of course, the main thing about the kitchen is you can enjoy an amazing view of the lake while just doing everyday chores. But the other thing is Love—it’s all around you in this kitchen, the reminder of the most amazing gift of their three children. Kids’ artwork covers every

single cabinet; these everyday masterpieces proudly grace the entire kitchen and literally envelop you. Now let’s bring it back to Earth for just a minute. Parenthood also gives us many challenges, and that’s why the other things that line the fridge door are witty, funny elements that remind you to laugh at life! Like for instance, “I like kids, but I don’t think I could eat a full one!” Or the cutest one, framed, “Any glass with wine in it is a wine glass.” This one was bought many years ago at The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where Lisa and Fred met and this fairy tale life began. (And where you probably could see the kitchen cabinets!) I will end on a note that hangs in the kids’ bathroom. It’s Lisa’s favorite: “Contentment Is Not the Fulfillment of What You Want, But the Realization of How Much You Already Have.” Lisa, Fred, Frank, Evelyn, Audrey, cats, goldfish and the big turtle in the yard, Thank you, it truly has been a pleasure.

It’s funny that those things your kids did that got on your nerves seem so cute when your GRANDCHILDREN do them.

Rent-a-Kid If you have grandkids coming to visit and no vital kid stuff on hand, don’t rush out and buy any. You just need Sheri Novak’s local company, TINY TOES TRAVEL, which offers loads of baby-related rental equipment; all are brand new for 2012. The company was launched primarily to help traveling families. But it’s also a perfect solution for grandparents, who find themselves needing a crib, highchair, stroller, etc. As each item is used and returned, Sheri cleans it with natural cleaners so babies with allergies aren’t at risk. It’s a perfect option, leaving you to worry only about how to spoil them! 231-714-2866 • TinyToesTravel.com

What’s Giving Your Age Away? You eat right, stay active with exercise, take vitamins and do everything you think you can. But are you overlooking a few culprits that might give away your secret? PEARLY WHITES NOT SO WHITE? Years of

leaving you with old hair.

AGE FIX: Over-the-counter, peroxide-based

whiteners deep clean and brighten, but they take a while to work. A dentist whitening treatment gives instant and dramatic results. NECK AND DÉCOLLETAGE. You moisturize

and pamper your face, but your neck and chest are aging, too. AGE FIX: Every day, apply creams with antioxidants like vitamins A and C. To slow further damage, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily. For more intense help, see a professional; some options are chemical peels and microdermabrasion.

AGE FIX: Color your hair if you’re going gray. Let’s face it, gray just ages you. But use a soft color, not a harsh one, unless you’re blessed with evenly grayed silver hair. Also, older hair needs more moisture, and treatments are crucial. Lastly, shake up your style; perfectly coiffed helmet hair ages you. Long hair ages, too. Chop it off, and chop off the years! YOUR HANDS GIVE YOU AWAY: We’re

talking about age spots and dry, thin skin. AGE FIX: Protect your hands with sunscreen as regularly as you would apply hand cream. Exfoliate regularly to improve circulation and texture, and moisturize 24-7.
