s I sit typing this, I am being swayed gently by the glistening waters of the bay. In the spirit of encapsulating a Northern Michigan Summer day, we are anchored off the beloved local castaway island Power Island (or Marion Island, if you’re a true local). It’s probably the first real 80-degree-plus day Mother Nature has given us that fell on a weekend, and people are taking advantage of our little private paradise. The glowing Caribbean-like water has warmed just a little. The island sounds are buzzing with energy and laughter; families and friends are relishing boat life! There are Boats big and small, new and old, both sail and power. Many are all joined together in a “Tie up” rows of convoys, ready to boat hop, and party! Every Island picnic table is claimed with colorful coolers, and little children swim nearby. The braver ones swing on the rope hanging from an ancient tree, some even jumping from the dock that proudly displays the Power Island sign. There is a silent respect: This is a place everyone truly cherishes, and it is the epitome of our sensational Summer in Grand Traverse Bay.

or my little family, we adore a day on the Island, and if we can swing it, even an overnight. Sometimes we are the only ones here and we feel like it’s all ours!! Or so we thought. We had no clue a ranger lives on the island fulltime till we met him last year! What a great idea for a feature? It is wonderfully written by Marcy Hermann. Proving that everything happens for a reason, she said that she wanted to take on the task of writing it when we bumped into each other on the island itself. Timing is everything, and it was just announced that a shuttle service will be available to and fro, so everyone can now enjoy the park, not just boat owners. It is a public park, after all, and one that all residents should enjoy. We are blessed that all four seasons of nature evoke rugged beauty and awe, but in the midst of summer, the wonders of the winter phenomenon come back to light in a new book by Ken Scott, titled The Leelanau Ice Caves. The amazing caves became national news, and the stunning photos that Ken took were such a

sensation on Facebook, this actually brought about the underwriting funds for publishing the book. We just didn’t have the heart to remind you of winter so soon, so instead Ken treated you to a snippet of the magnificent body of work that spans over 30 years. We hope you are wowed and inspired by his superior talent and amazing eye for capturing the raw awesomeness of this place we all call home. Many people daydream of a summer spent at the beach, but owning a home on the beach? Now that’s real heaven on earth. And Mary and Bruce Byl envisioned building theirs as an open, flowing “beachy” waterfront home. But the story only starts there; the cool part is it stands on the very same spot where she grew up looking at the same view of West Bay. The pictures of their home are simply stunning, and even Mary says she can’t believe that’s her house when she sees it from the water! Lastly but certainly not least, we will transport you to Florence, Italy! Where the Lake Leelanau restaurant Bella Fortuna awaits, owners Jane and Bob want you to experience their Florence. They are lucky enough to own a home overlooking the Arno River where they spend six months out of the year. But their summer is spent at Bella Fortuna, and yours should be, too! Trust me, it will not be complete without sipping Italian wine on the award-winning Terrazza, eating delicious food Chef Mario specially prepares, and maybe even playing a little Bocce Ball? Ciao Bella! So between Florence, Italy, Castaway Islands, and places to see captured by Ken, we’re pretty sure we have given you a Fabulous Summer Must-Do list. Just don’t forget your flip-flops and sunscreen. Yaay, Summer Amazingness! Go Savor Every Second.

Youth Cycling volunteers are on generous loan to TADL from Laura and Bob Otwell, residents of Traverse City. The collection includes popular fiction titles in paperback for adults, a variety of children’s’ books, and titles chosen from the collection on Woodmere specific to the destination location. Bike Sleeping Bear It’s official: The Most Beautiful Place in America is ready to ride! The Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail’s 5.5-mile segment between the Dune Climb and Empire finally opened in June. The new segment doubles the trail length to 9.5 miles from Empire to Glen Arbor. Construction for the Glen Arbor to Port Oneida segment is anticipated to be complete spring 2015 with the Port Oneida to Bohemian Road section in 2016, adding nearly 8 additional miles of trail in the next two years. And don’t forget that with the BATA new ride-n-bike service out to Sleeping Bear, it opens up a new world of family fun while protecting our environment for future generations. Power up on the Island! Now you don’t have to be a Boat Owner to experience an awesome family day at Power Island! It’s been kind of unfair that you could enjoy our very own Treasure Island only if you were privileged enough to be on a boat. “It is a county park paid for by taxpayers, so it’s great they now all have accessibility,” says Alisa Kroupa, president at Grand Traverse County Parks & Recreation Commission. Now the county has arranged its very own shuttle boat (driven by Park Ranger Fred Tank, who you can read all about on page 36). It runs back and forth from Bowers Harbor to the Island. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 231-922-4818. The cost is $30 for the first passenger and $15 for each additional passenger, which basically just covers the gas! Trust us, owning a boat is expensive! Plan for a day in the rugged wilderness, though. Bring a picnic, sunscreen and everything you would need! There are no stores to buy anything you may forget, but a day spent on the Castaway Island is truly heaven!

When onions are translucent, add flour and mix. Simmer for 5 minutes. Add milk, cream, potatoes, spices and parmesan. Heat until sauce has thickened. Check for seasoning and proper thickness. Add more roux if needed. Place filling in a boat dish. Cut out a puff pastry dough lid to fit the top of the dish. Brush with egg wash and bake at 350 degrees for 12-14 minutes or until pastry is golden brown and filling bubbles.

Once you are out and about on 2 wheels, head over to the The Traverse City Visitor Center. They installed a”Fixit” bike repair station outside its main entrance on Cass Street. The station features a hanger arm that fits all styles and sizes of bikes and includes an air pump and tools to perform basic repairs and maintenance, from changing a flat to adjusting brakes. Visitor Center Manager Kathee McCafferty saw a Fixit station on the University of Kentucky campus and thought it would be a nice addition to downtown TC and the cycling community.

Last year the launch of a BATA Bike-n-Ride program that allowed cyclists to pedal paved trails one way and ride the bus back was so successful they’ve added more! In 2013 the Suttons Bay Loop route (Route 10) and TART’s Leelanau Trail had 477 bikes use the service, now added is Traverse City-Glen Arbor/Empire Village Loop (Route 11). Riders can experience the newly paved and much anticipated Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail between Glen Arbor and Empire and ride the bus to any other stop along the route. Also, there’s a funny little story: Bob vaguely mentioned he couldn’t get a reservation at a good Italian restaurant in Northern Michigan, so they opened one! It’s been two years now and a hilly Tuscan road, but the stars are aligning finally with smiling Italian Chef Mario Deruda and a happy kitchen. Good things come to those who wait. Now, don’t get me wrong. They haven’t recreated the Cysteine Chapel with Renaissance paintings by Michelangelo on domed ceilings. Don’t expect that! You can and should only experience that in Italy. What they have managed is to fully embody the easy European way of life, capturing its essence as only Italians can enjoy. First, there is the stunning Terrazza, the award-winning outdoor patio that is a remarkable homage to the terraces of Italy. Italians cultivate these outdoor areas and congregate, eating, drinking and living life to the fullest. Enjoy dining informally at tables or spend a summer evening lounging at the bar. One could wine, dine and play out in the Terrazza all day, but if you did you would miss everything inside—like, for instance, the Emporio and Wine Cave that greets you, stocked with everything Italia! All are imported goodies from Florence and Tuscany, including a decadent balsamic reduction bottled that you can’t buy anywhere else in the U.S.! Jane’s love of books is also celebrated with a coveted bookshelf where most of the books for purchase are signed by the authors—this includes books by Jane and Bob, of course. From there, the restaurant divides into rooms. The Trattoria, which means an informal dining room, is family style with flowing tables, perfectly framed by the monumental bar that commands the Trattoria’s entire length. This bar has a history, too, traced back to the year 1892 when it began its journey in Belgium, loaded onto a ship bound for New York, then Chicago and then another on Lake Michigan, finally resting its sea legs in Lake Leelanau. It’s a place to sit for stories and memories in the making. 32

Off the Trattoria is the elegant and regal dining room named the Medici Room after the 16th century family that ruled Florence for 500 years. This room is perfect for any special occasion or the odd royalty that may pop in! This is also where Chef Mario holds his chef dinners. The last room, the Sala Fiorentina, is the most vibrant in decoration and frivolity. This is where you are truly “entertained” by all the senses. For 29 years Tank has maintained the 5 miles of trails, 3 miles of beach and overall condition of the 200 acre island

When you live where people vacation and you work, it sometimes feels like you’re missing out on all the fun. Shuttling between work and camps, through traffic and heat while, seemingly, the rest of Traverse City is soaking up the sun and cooling off in the Bay, can be torture. And weekends are often filled with errands, kids’ activities and yard work. Our family’s remedy for this deprivation: a weeknight ride to Power Island, with a dip in the 55-degree water. (Trust me, it felt great.) We took advantage of the 10 p.m. sunset just a few nights before the summer solstice and stole a few hours of glory. Power Island is about a 6.5-mile ride from Clinch Harbor on West Grand Traverse Bay. That equates to a 20-minute ride by motor and 1.5 hours by sail. Many consider it to be the crown jewel of the Bay. But what really makes this gem sparkle is the stewardship of the island. Currently, that job is shared by the Grand Traverse County Department of Parks and Recreation, along with a soft-spoken, retired Northern Michigan College professor of biology named Fred Tank. Fred Tank is Power Island’s park ranger. He has held the position for 29 years since 1985. If you follow the Park Ranger sign near the boat dock, you will discover the rustic cabin where he and his wife, Tina, reside from the middle of May through the middle of October. According to Tank, the cabin was built in 1959 by caretaker Ralph Matthews. “He had to be pretty clever back then to get it built … and to survive,” Tank said. According to Tank, Ralph lived on the island year-round with his wife, Clara, for 10 years. They survived on deer, chickens and the supplies brought to them by then-owner Pete Rennie, owner of Rennie Oil. Unfortunately, Rennie perished during one of the deliveries while crossing, what he believed to be, the frozen Bay. Much has changed since those days and since the early years of the Tanks’ summer residence on the island. Grand Traverse County provides a 24-foot power boat for Tank to access the 38

mainland for food and supplies. Tank also uses the boat as a newly created shuttle service by the county to generate revenue for park maintenance (see sidebar). In the cottage, what was once powered by kerosene is now powered by solar panels. “It is a sign of the times,” said Tank’s wife, Tina. The solar power panels provide electricity for lighting, propane, refrigerator, and especially communication. That virtual lifeline to the mainland is important when you consider Tank’s responsibilities as park ranger. Besides maintaining the 5 miles of trails, 3 miles of beach and overall condition of the 200acre island, Tank also ensures that visitors to the designated Quiet Wilderness Reserve respect the rules posted to preserve its pristine state. “I inform people of their responsibility and call the authorities if there is a situation,” Tank said. That has meant quieting campers on nearby Bassett Island’s four rustic sites. “One group brought a huge sound system and blasted music,” Tank said. “That wasn’t going to fly.” With most situations, Tank’s mild-mannered presence and position as park ranger are enough to resolve situations. “Calling for help is expensive,” he said. Besides keeping the peace, there is the occasional emergency needing Tank’s assistance. Most incidents, according to Tank, are minor. “There have been no heroic rescues,” he said. But his presence has made a difference to visitors, including one who suffered a severe allergic reaction from a bee sting. As well, Tank recalled a camper showing up at his door one night quite upset because a moth had crawled into his ear and he could not remove it. Tank helped the camper by removing the moth with tweezers. “He was forever grateful,” Tank said. One other night, Tank recalled a woman knocking on the cabin door shivering in a bathing suit. “She and her boyfriend got into some windy weather and their engine cut out. They thought they might blow out into Lake Michigan,” Tank said. The woman, seeing Power Island in the distance, swam to shore and

Fun Facts: Power Island is a public park, managed by the Grand Traverse County Department of Parks and Recreation. It’s been known as Hog Island, Harbor Island, Marion Island and Ford Island, after former owner Henry Ford. But the current name is the result of a grassroots effort by Eugene and Sayde Power to save the island from development in the 1970s.

The name Marion Island came about in 1881 when owner Frederick Hall petitioned the state of Michigan to officially name it after his daughter, Marion Hall Fowler. You can arrange for the park ranger, Fred Tank, to take you on a hiking tour of the island. He has many stories about the island and its significance to the community. There are no skunks, squirrels or chipmunks on Power Island, according to Tank.

Power Island is a popular geocaching location. “We are on the international geocaching website,” said Tank. As a result, he has welcomed geocache enthusiasts from a variety of locations, many from Canada, and even a group from Australia. “Having found the cache from Power Island on their list is highly sought after,” Tank said.

There are four campsites on nearby Bassett Island, which can be reserved through the Grand Traverse County Parks and Recreation website. The county has plans to add sites to Power Island in the near future.

The Ice Caves of Leelanau In the midst of this winter’s Polar Vortex that put the entire nation in a deep freeze, the area of Leelanau County that hibernates like a sleeping bear suddenly became National Headlines. The Ice Caves of Leelanau were a mega star right along with the movie “Frozen.” We’re talking about the massive monuments of ice parading the shore that were awe-inspiring and just plain “wow,” made from scratch entirely from Lake Michigan. The area was flooded with thousands of people who had to see and experience this Once in a Lifetime Legendary Occasion. Quietly in the masses was local, renowned photographer Ken Scott, capturing these magnificent winter wonders. “Ice is a phenomenon of Mother Nature—it is the ultimate Outsider Art in an Outside Art gallery,” says Ken. He visually documented the Gills Pier ice caves through his lens on 21 different explorations. And the spectacular pictures he shared with the world on Facebook and Flickr became EPIC. 58

The subject of a book was raised immediately by people far and wide who said, “You have to publish a book!” Folks almost demanded! Once this snowball started rolling, it didn’t stop! Underwriters jumped on board: Tom and Burma Powell, Art’s Tavern in Glen Arbor, The Business Helper, LLC in Suttons Bay and The Leelanau Enterprise. The design and layout was done by Angela Saxon of Saxon Design Inc., with Ken making many decisions too. And along with the tireless efforts of Barbara Siepker of The Leelanau Press as the publisher, within two weeks it was at the printer! Collaboration, too, with writer Jerry Dennis who wrote the opening essay and meteorologist Ernie Ostomo gives ice event descriptions page by beautiful page got this book to where it is today. Like the natural phenomenon that the stunning book visually documents, so too has been its success. It SOLD OUT of its first print—before the truck arrived. Customized Storage As a designer, I will never recommend that you “over accessorize” your spaces. I fell into that trap when redoing my personal kitchen and realized that some flexibility is needed to shift things around as you get familiar with your new space. There are, however, the top 5 storage requests that we always take into account when we are designing your new space.

SPICES AND OILS We cooks, love our spices and who can resist a stop into Fustinis for the perfect oil or vinegar. 2 popular approaches to this item. With a minimum of 3" a pull out with adjustable shelves can be installed. These can be above or below counter, can have a leg attached so to also be decorative. Optionally for spice, my favorite approach, is the spice drawer. This will allow you to lay your spices on a tilt and have better viewing of the label. EVERYDAY DISHWARE With the concept of more open floor plans still being the trend, upper cabinets have become fewer. Peg drawer inserts for dishware are a great way to approach that obstacle. As dishware has also become larger, it sometimes does not fit in standard upper cabinetry. KNIVES A wooden knife block on the counter has become so passé. Put them in a drawer instead. Removes counter clutter and still keeps the blades from dulling when stored in a wooden holder.

TRAY DIVIDERS Not just for cookie sheets. These handy divisions work great for cutting boards and serving platters. A great way to use the deep space over the refrigerator or wall ovens. So when planning your next kitchen project or even wanting to organize your current one, consult a design professional as to the availability of accessories that fit your space and needs. 64

f you’re lucky enough to live at the Beach, you’re lucky enough! Or so the saying goes. Mary Byl, who was born and raised in a Traverse City home on the beach of West Bay, knows she’s pretty darn Blessed. “I’m sure my mom is looking down and smiling,” says Mary. The familiar, pristine view from the very same spot where her parents’ Cape Cod once stood is now Mary and husband Bruce’s forever home. The home has been in the family ever since Mary’s grandmother built it when her dad was little in 1942. Being an only child, Mary’s father inherited it. Today this cherished home, already packed with memories aplenty, brings new life to a whole future generation of memories to come. The first big family event was hosting her niece’s wedding on the beach.

After growing up here, Mary moved away, travelled and married, returning to her roots to raise their family. The family lived on Old Mission Peninsula in a Frank Lloyd Wright style home that screams thoroughly modern and a darker interior. When the opportunity arose to purchase her mother’s beloved Cape Cod, salmon-colored house with green shutters, Mary and Bruce were thrilled. Of course, this all happened right as the economy tanked and their current house wouldn’t sell for what seemed like forever! Now, they didn’t just tear down Mom’s “home sweet home” willy-nilly. They even seriously considered trying to remodel and renovate, adding the touches they wanted. The very traditional house held treasured memories that spanned an entire lifetime, and you don’t change a home like this lightly. But they also knew they planned to grow old in this house. “We realized we weren’t getting any younger,” recalls Mary. Bruce was already no stranger to bionic-like surgeries fixing both knees, so a fully handicapped accessible and equipped first floor made practical sense. So when the time came to decide, the two realized it was better to start with a fresh canvas. Still, not a thing went to waste. They recycled, upcycled, repurposed and donated! Freedom Builders took all the appliances and completely stripped the home, helping to fix up seven new homes. Then came in Odom’s for the hardware and ornate décor. This left only the frame of the home, which was handed over to the fire department. City ordinance didn’t allow fires, but they were able to practice search and rescue drills. In other words, a life may even be saved from the salvage. That’s pretty awesome for an old house to boast! Once it was ready to be levelled, it took only four hours! A bittersweet day for sure, but Mary also kept some treasured vintage crystal chandeliers that grace the new home’s ceilings in homage to her mother.

Their best-laid plans of selling first and building later were thrown to the wind, with real estate a buyers’ market at the time; the other driving force was Mother Nature! Northern Michigan winters dictate that you can only pour foundations at certain times of the year! So under the experienced guidance of builder Paul Maurer, pour they did, when it was a good time to do so. They became the talk of the town when this foundation sat for almost two years! People drove by the seemingly abandoned project, presuming they had gone broke. But once the building got in motion it went smoothly, taking just 13 months to be completely finished. Mary and Bruce moved in on May 8, 2013. The plans for the new house were entrusted to architect Bob Cornwell, who funnily enough grew up down the street and was childhood friends with Mary and her mother—how’s that for generating the fond and familiar feel of truly “Coming Home” and meant to be? The strategy and plan for this dream home where they could grow old together revolved around an Open, Beachy, Relaxed feel with a few guest bedrooms with no maintenance! “I wanted to see the water,” Mary says. This is why the floor-to-ceiling windows all frame the entire West Bay, crystal-blue waterfront that runs the entire length of the 70

sprawling open living space from one end of the home to the other. It’s reminiscent of a Four Seasons Caribbean 5-star resort palatial suite! Beachy? Oh yes, they achieved that perfectly! The finer details of interior design created an entirely flawless home, one that resembles those in Architectural Digest or Veranda Magazine. Mary and Bruce entrusted this to professional Kim Abbott. Other cosmetic finishing touches reflect Mary’s superb taste. (However, she is quick to tell us that her nickname because of her lack of Godgiven craftiness or creativity is Monster Martha!) There are some killer wallpaper choices, custom pillows with paintings of their dogs, and even the old house by Barbara Prince. One major highlight is striking work by ubertalented watercolor painter Jeanne Larson, a local artist who paints in New York and Paris, too, no less! She painted a compass on the ceiling and stars on the walls in a room that was intended as a study; with the spectacular view from the walkout balcony, this study has become Mary’s Cave. Jeanne’s paintings adorn the walls in many other rooms, too.

You are literally wowed at every turn. The easy, breezy kitchen flows so effortlessly off the dining room and breakfast nook (all with palatial views of the dazzling blue bay, of course). And when Mary couldn’t decide on a backsplash for the custom cabinetry bar framing the back wall, she actually woke in the middle of the night remembering her mother used to have an elegant, full-length horizontal mirror—why change what was a perfect idea? The area sparkles as it reflects the iridescent glistening water in the light. Plus, it’s a great tribute to the memory of the original house. Both Mary and Bruce have offices on the first floor. Each has beautiful bay views that make working in them not too terrible to bear. And Bruce’s man cave on the second floor came around almost by accident. It was not really originally planned, but Mary remembered her own mother’s parties where all the women ended up in the kitchen and the men would migrate to watch the game. She decided a man cave was a needed addition! It’s all the way on the other wing of the house (in case they get too rowdy, I guess), complete with a butcher’s block, shuffleboard, a built-in kitchen and a fridge full of beer! Oh yeah, and a big screen TV! NORTHERN MICHIGAN

Mystical Morning I was swept away by enormous beauty while walking the Lake Michigan shoreline in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The immensity of her; the clouds that moved in pace with my own heart; the sun rising in the east; a quickly moving squall on the western horizon. I sat and thought, lazily scanning from east to west, searching for the right frame to capture the essence of the morningâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mood. I changed the lens on my camera in order to alter the way I saw the world. When I more closely examined a group of pilings, a sudden feeling struck me. This was it. The soft gradient of blues brought upon by the morningâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s heavy clouds and light rains. The thin strip of pink sky along the horizon; an encouragement for those willing to look. A small colony of seagulls enjoying a respite atop the tired pilings while their cousins fly soundlessly overhead. All the enchantments of that morning came together in one frame, creating something both beautiful and esoteric. 80
