Life is Simple – Just Add Water

W

hether you grew up here, retired here, or ended up here, somehow I bet I can guess why! We Northern Michigan Locals may be a mixed bag of all kinds of folks from all walks of life. But we can agree on one thing! It was a conscious decision hugely based on the proximity of those dazzling shores of water that romanced us. And Water is just like love—you can fall in it, drown in it, but you can’t live without it! It makes your life worth living, a bad day instantly forgotten, winters worth enduring, and gives cloudy days a shiny silver lining. Am I right? We are able to take that inner serenity the water so freely gives to make our family lives richer, raising our children with a greater appreciation of nature and their surroundings. For the eternal gift of what it gives us, enhancing our very existence, it makes any materialistic sacrifices made from our pre-water existence seem so trivial.

DON RUTT PHOTOGRAPHY

With my husband Tom and daughter Teaghan on the water is my family’s Happy Place

Of course, with all said, it still is a tad early to dive in the water. As I write it only just started to nicely thaw, but I think that’s why we all will yearn to squeeze in every ounce of it while we can, knowing our summers, though spectacular, are too short and fleeting. So for this issue we focused on the water and the impending summer as much as time allowed us. People really weren’t in the mindset. (Cabin fever had set in, and they had forgotten the magical gift blessed upon them to call here Home!) They had all left town, taking a very much needed Spring Break in search of sun, sand and, yes, Water, to be rejuvenated once more. So, making lemonade out of Lemons, we knew it was the perfect time to launch our “Wish You Were Here” department. A simple little thing, take us along in your bag or suitcase on vacation. Pose the family together for a shot with your BAYLIFE mag front and center. Send us the picture and we will print it, sharing in the fun sense of community while having your happy family in the mag. Believe it or not, this department is quite a phenomenon in our past life in Maryland. It’s still one of the most beloved departments 10 years later! We had pix from Red Square,

the Great Wall of China, you name it! So we challenge you to not forget. So the May/June months are all about anticipation and preparation. We are outside and moving again, looking forward to another sensational summer. We work on our porches, gardens, boats, putting back our docks and daydreaming again of barbecues and campfires, family and friend gatherings and much more. So inside, you will find inspiration for where to eat, what to do, how to decorate, and what to wear. Bringing it back to water again, the water feature gives credit due to the organizations behind the scenes that ensure we can have a healthy water lifestyle and our kids are safe. (Does swimming in E. Coli sound fun?) Clean water is probably something you may take for granted. So we felt it was important to know more about this, living in the Great Lakes region as we do. But easing you into the heavy water text are some beautiful photographs by Michelle Redder who told me, “Coming here is home for many people, and I just want to touch hearts. I love that my photography brings back fond memories just from the nature around us.” And last but certainly not least, make a point to “dive in” to the story of Jim and Barbara King whose lifelong plan to retire here was 37 years in the making! I hope that statement alone intrigued you. It pulled me in when I met the wonderful couple in person, and I look forward to seeing them again soon. (Of course, this has nothing to do with the fact that their grandson is six and very handsome, and my little Teaghan will be that age, too!) Barbara and Jim are great planners; you never know what could happen! And most importantly, Water is the most essential element of life, because without water, you can’t make COFFEE. And without coffee, nothing would ever get done, especially the magazine you’re holding.

Money Makers The financial whizzes on Wall Street are nothing compared to our very own Front Street Financial Gurus! And they have big news to announce. The local Traverse City office of Morgan Stanley has transformed into The Peninsula Group at Morgan Stanley, a process-driven Investment Management Group consisting of Financial Advisors and partners. Guiding you step by step to reach your Wealth Management goals are Craig Rosenberg (you may remember Craig’s dancing days with Swing Shift and the Stars?), Thomas Haase and Kevin Beaudoin. Portfolio Management Associate Christopher Radu, and Client Service Associates Jennifer Galla and Becky Leslie round out the group. The Peninsula Group in layman’s terms means it’s not their first rodeo, people! This good-looking group is a power-packed team of experts with years of experience combined just waiting to help you create the perfect portfolio! The economy is finally looking up, and you know what they say? Timing is everything!

More Shore There will be a new place to frequent with your family in beautiful Charlevoix this summer. Earlier this year, the former Camp Sea-Gull property along the north shore of Lake Charlevoix officially became a Hayes Township park. With 1,400 feet of lake frontage, the 20-acre site offers high-quality public access to the lake for recreational fun that includes swimming and all kinds of boating. A wonderful example of the Northern Michigan bountiful lifestyle we all embrace, Camp Sea-Gull had been part of the Schulman family since 1955, offering families and children the opportunity to experience our beautiful outdoors, said a representative from the Schulman family. “That legacy can now continue indefinitely under the township’s stewardship.” Hayes Township at 231.547.6961

Linger Longer In the short time Georgina’s has been open, Chef Anthony’s Latin and Asian-inspired, mouthwatering creations have created a loyal following and foodie write-up kudos galore. So, if you wished there was more room to dine there, you may be happy to hear that he is expanding—and so can your waistline. You’ll be able to linger longer in his new location, taking over the closed Phil’s on Front, since Phil Murphy just retired. As well as being able to reach more customers in the bigger spot, he will also touch you with his personal story. His father is Cuban and mother half Chinese and half Nicaraguan. At the age of seven, he was adopted by his American father and was raised in Tampa, Florida. He grew up around food, and it’s a huge part of his culture. The melting pot of flavors spills out in the uniqueness of his cuisine. And Georgina’s is lovingly named after his cousin, Georgina Alvarez. She inspired him to soar. CINDY MCSURELY AND LIZ AHRENS OF THE CROOKED TREE ARTS CENTER AT THE WATERFRONT WINE FESTIVAL IN HARBOR SPRINGS

It’s a vibrant, sunny evening downtown overlooking the corner of Front and Cass. Visualize friends, food and frolic, on the outdoor second floor patio of The Franklin Restaurant. With promised seating for 100, it will for sure be a happening spot! All winter we have watched it grow brick by brick in quiet anticipation. The owners of Trattoria Stella, Amanda and Paul Danielson, and Executive Chef Myles Anton are hoping the doors to their second venture will open May 12 with food and drink menus influenced “from all over the globe.” Chef de Cuisine Gabe Rodriguez will be leading the kitchen operations and is accomplished in Japanese, Latin, French and Italian cuisines, so possibilities are endless. For décor adding instant character will be a 120-year-old back bar, reportedly from a bar in Marquette that was found in a barn resting since the excessive ‘80s. (I bet it could tell stories.) Also, look for a common bar table made from a four-foot-wide cottonwood trunk that will seat 20 of your closest friends, its fashioned after the popular favorite at Stella’s. So, even though The Franklin has a pretty serious name (check out the website), we have no doubt that laid-back good times are in store. We can’t wait! Thefranklintc.com

UNCORKED Darric Newman is the wine aficionado and co-owner of Folgarelli’s Market and Wine Shop

It’s Time For Rosé With winter behind us, spring in full swing and the warm days of summer just ahead, it is once again time for rosé wines. Don’t be misguided by their light pinkish hue. Rosés traditionally produced are typically dry and absolutely delicious. The origins of rosé are the Provence region of France, but they are made in nearly all wine-producing regions of the world. While the style of these wines can vary as well as the varietals they are produced from, they all hold one thing in common—they are great summer wines. One of our favorites from over the pond is the Commanderie de la Bargemone from Provence, France. This has lovely aromas of wild strawberries and black currant with a light, floral character and a bone dry finish. One of our local rosé gems is the Laughing Waters dry rosé from Chateau Fontaine. Made from 100 percent Pinot Noir, this wine exhibits aromas of strawberry, raspberry and cherry then finishes up nice and dry on the palate. Enjoy these wines nicely chilled with lighter fare such as chicken or with your favorite cheese. The best six doctors anywhere and no one can deny it are: Sunshine, Water, Rest, Air, Exercise and Diet. WAYNE FIELDS

Fountain of Youth Keeping with our water theme, you already know all the reasons you should drink water, right? Reasons like hydrated skin and health benefits with a list too long to mention. But did you know that a study last year found lack of water can put you in a bad mood? Yep, mildly dehydrated women experienced headaches, fatigue, worsened mood and difficulty concentrating. Yikes! And no, wine doesn’t count as water intake—I already checked! In fact, if you’re drinking wine you need to drink extra water to compensate for the dehydrating effects of the alcohol. Here are a few tips the experts suggest to dive into hydration:

1

Get on your Bike The TART Trails 4th annual Recycle-A-Bicycle Bike Swap will be wheeling into town May 30— June 1. The Feeling Good part is that you are supporting the Recycle-A-Bicycle program that provides bikes to be refurbished for those in need, working with charities like Child and Family Services and The Women’s Resource Center. The other cool part is you set the price. The swap accepts rideable bicycles and bicycle accessories. And because it’s a great way to trade in a bike for growing kids, it also has become a much anticipated family event! Bring your swap items to the Old Town Parking Garage on Friday, May 30 between 5 and 8 p.m. If your item(s) sell, you receive 75 percent of the sale price. The other 25 percent supports the Recycle-ABicycle program! Old Town Parking Garage 125 E. 8th St. 231-941-4300 • traversetrails.org 22

Have a beverage with every snack & meal.

2

Eat more fruits & veggies— they’re 20 percent of fluid intake.

Burn Baby Burn You may not have been an “early adopter” of SUP (stand up paddle boarding), thinking it was just a fad. Newsflash: It’s still smoking hot! Plus, grabbing a board to paddle the bay is one of the best core exercises there is, and it’s a calorie scorcher. Paddling hard, you can rack up 800 to 1000 calories per hour! It’s just as intense as other paddling water sports like canoeing and kayaking. It burns a little less when you’re just cruising but working on your tan, rocking a bikini and getting a workout. What’s not to love? Be warned, it’s addictive! Try renting a board first. We are so lucky to have awesome surf shops living by the beach. If you need some extra inspiration on how it’s done, check out the 6th annual M22 Challenge in Glen Arbor on June 14. Registration is full, but it’s a crazy fun event to attend. M22challenge.com

I used to wear suits everyday and as I get older, I find my experience makes the difference not the clothes I wear. My first year and a half in town I used the Brew Coffee shop as my office. What draws you to bay life? I love the quality of life here. The recreational activities, the food and I love the people the most. I believe that people live here by choice. What do you do for fun in Northern Michigan? I enjoy exploring all areas, boating on West Bay, riding motorcycles, snow shoeing, camp fires and mostly enjoying the company of friends and families. Tell us something about you we don’t know: As a senior in high school my car was voted worst car in my graduating class. I used that to motivate me through life.

Located in the heart of downtown Traverse City, The Exchange was voted ‘Best New Store’ in 2013 and continues to regularly improve its look, taking cues from boutiques in the hottest fashion cities in the US. “We are finding our market and tailoring the merchandise to it. It has taken a year to figure out and

and have since hired a young, fashion-forward staff to help keep the looks fresh. They recently invested in an exciting new Spring/Summer collection to suit all budgets, ages and body types and it’s hitting the

shelves as we speak. In addition to this, they continue to carry unique gifts and greeting cards that are sure to alleviate the age old “I came for a gift and only bought for myself” dilemma. Among the brands carried, many of them originate in the style capital of the US, New York City. Tocca, a small-batch perfumery (and celebrity fragrance pick), makes a great gift for Mother’s Day or Graduation as does The Soap and Paper Factory’s variety of hand creams, soaps or oil diffusers, usually only found in larger stores like Anthropologie. Proving once again: you can shop local and get big city quality. Make The Exchange your first stop for this seasons shopping; you might just find everything you need. we are still learning everyday” said store owner Anne Pujos. DINNER and a VIEW Once the sun starts to shine and the mercury rises, the water beckons us. We look for a fabulous place to dine overlooking our blue utopia, and we realize that the choices are quite limited. Not only that, but when you live in a town that swells with tourists also coveting a waterfront table, the endless wait can be grueling. Harrington’s By The Bay is your answer. You’ll discover a dazzling view with much less wait hassle.

YOUR HOSTS: OWNERS GLEN HARRINGTON AND JOHN MCGEE WITH CHEF JOSH VINOCUR THE NAUTICAL THEMED DINING ROOM, COMPLETE WITH WRAPAROUND VIEWS OF WEST GRAND TRAVERSE BAY

Glen Harrington and John McGee welcome you personally into their home away from home. Their ultimate goal is for your experience to be a memorable one. Many owners are chefs that are pulled to the kitchen and others are owners from afar, but not here at Harrington’s or their sister restaurant, Sorellina. They are always on-hand making sure the service, the delicious food and everything in-between is nothing short of excellent. They have been carrying on this philosophy now going into their fourth year. Transforming the building once known as The Freshwater Lodge was quite an undertaking. It was a hunter’s paradise with wild animals staring from every wall, complete with a 6-foot-wide antler chandelier. “We both wore our tool belts and dug in,” recalls John. They opened up the dark and dingy place, uncovering windows that now harness that pristine view, chopped down obstructing booths, knocked out walls, lightened up the bar and even built the wine room! Pretty impressive. If you’re at home by the water, you certainly will feel comfortable here. It’s a nautical wonderland complete with wooden boats suspended from the ceiling. Props and outboards line the walls, and all around are maritime treasures you may have only seen in movies. So all that sets the tone for a divine dinner by the water, but what about the food and drink? I know, I’m getting there! First let’s visit the bar. There is no Happy Hour here. WHAT, you say? As the saying goes, Why Limit Happy to only an hour? Happy LIFE is what they call it here! All day long, everyday special prices reign in the lounge: $2 beers and $3 well drinks. Hello! I didn’t know either. I’ve been Happy Houring at all the wrong places. That fact

alone is worth the trip. And the bar menu is all-out gourmet: Beef & Asparagus Rolls, Lettuce Wraps or a Duck Confit Pizza, not just chips and nibbles, people! So, finally getting to the real menu, I got to sit down and “grill the chef.” (Sorry, I couldn’t resist!) Josh Vinocur, who was very charming, shared with me that growing up his mom was an awful cook, but his dad was more accomplished in the kitchen and had lived in France. He gave Josh a European perspective on the culinary world—good food and good wine. (Which reminds me, they have a fab wine menu, too!) They change the menu seasonally about three to four times a year so they can utilize the local ingredients and freshest of flavors. They are known for their Hand-Cut Aged Beef Steaks with signature preparations, which goes a little something like this: Filet Mignon with morel, caramelized onion-gruyère crème brûlée with roasted asparagus. Need a tissue? Or maybe fish? Lake Superior Walleye with a potato crust, applewood bacon & chive crème fraiche with asparagus. Yum! With Delectable Dishes like this, make no mistake that this is fine dining caliber, just without the stuffy tablecloth. It’s quite simply Great Food in a relaxed setting, exactly what being Up North is all about. Fine dining dishes aside, Josh also claims their ground steak burgers have hit the town by storm, topped off with a freshly baked bun. Josh and his kitchen crew strive to be consistently excellent, knowing they are only as good as the last plate out! All this and incredible service from their attentive staff, too. It all adds up to a great experience, with John and Glen waving goodbye until next time.

So, we mentioned their other restaurant, Sorellina in Downtown TC, opened exactly one year later to the day after Harrington’s! It is aptly named Sorellina, which means Little Sister in Italian. It was a different venture entirely for the dynamic duo: excellent service, terrific food and a wonderful atmosphere but with an Italian flair. They pulled it off nicely! Pop by the bar and lounge for a prequel to any entertaining evening out, the opera house, the playhouse or the state. Or just make it your stop as the happy end of your work day, meet friends to catch up and stay a while. As you would expect, it’s a happening haven with another Happy LIFE all hours all times: $3 well drinks, $5 glasses of wine and $3 domestic beers, with an appetizer menu all priced at $5! The ambiance and mouthwatering tastes of beloved Italy envelop you in the intimate dining room that is the perfect date night destination for dinner by candlelight. The soft lighting makes it romantic, elegant and cozy. The bountiful menu is authentic Italian with heavenly pasta dishes that would inspire even Michelangelo himself to cry Bellissimo. But this is way beyond pasta with exquisitely prepared dishes of meat and seafood that satisfy any Italian craving. Dishes include the famed staples like marvelous Marsala, bold Bruschetta, ravishing Risotto, and great Gazpacho. Many TC residents boast this is one of their favorite dining rooms in the City, and a real breath of fresh air. And who are we to argue with that? All this in walking distance downtown, Mediterranean dining and atmosphere reminiscent of date nights in the big cities. Harrington’s By The Bay, 13890 S. For Love of Water FLOW By Allison Voglesong The vast Great Lakes contain 20 percent of the whole world’s fresh surface water, but they are not infinite. That’s one reason why James Olson helped found FLOW, a Traverse City-based nonprofit. FLOW’s acronym means “For Love of Water,” and FLOW’s policy and education programs protect the Great Lakes.

“whether it’s your backyard creek or rain watering your garden. And it needs to be protected at every point in this water cycle.” The water cycle doesn’t just connect the Great Lakes to the pond at the park; it connects the people who use it. Fresh water for drinking and sanitation is a human right, and Executive Director Liz Kirkwood points out that FLOW’s programs safeguarding certain public protected uses that rely on clean and abundant Great Lakes water, like fishing, swimming, boating, navigation, and commerce. “These protected uses are all special for health, for happiness, for our jobs and economy. And because water is a common resource that is shared, we have to make sure that what we do with the water protects it everyone,” says Kirkwood.

It started when veteran attorney Olson represented a community group battling a Nestle water bottling plant lowering a nearby That’s a lot to think about when watching stream. empowers citizens who live, play, and visit in the Great Lakes. “Once you realize these uses are legally protected, you’ve got a starting point for taking action,” says Kirkwood. That’s why FLOW’s offer legal strategies for people to address the issues that hit close to home. Between climate change, invasive species, algal blooms, pollution, and thirsty communities looking to tap our water, there has never been a better time to act than now. As the tourist season in the Grand Traverse area simmers through spring and summer boils it to a fever pitch, we might forget that we should want to share our common waters when all we really want is a place to unfurl our beach towel, undisturbed. Yet our capacity and willingness to share our beautiful waters is what defines the culture of Grand Traverse just as much as the contour of the bay shores defines our remarkable landscape. The mission of FLOW’s Great Lakes Society citizen contingency captures this trait in four words: “Common waters, common purpose.” For more about FLOW’s programs, the Great Lakes Society, and to follow their updates, please visit www.flowforwater.org.

THE RESTORATION PROJECT AT BRYANT PARK REDUCING BACTERIAL CONTAMINATION

The Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay A small nonprofit making a big difference By Karyln Haas Marketing & Communications Specialist The Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay. The sun shines over Grand Traverse Bay. A mother at East Bay Park slathers her two kids with sunscreen as they try to squirm out of her grasp and into the shallows. Two friends attempt to balance on the stand up paddleboards they rented at Clinch Park. A group of friends launch their boat from Elmwood Township Marina to motor up to Northport for lunch. And fishermen tell tales about the one that got away at the DNR boat launch on Old Mission Peninsula. Grand Traverse Bay is a jewel that sustains those who live, work and visit here. It’s the driving force of our local economy, a recreational powerhouse and a source of beauty in all seasons. Every day, The Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay works behind the scenes to protect and preserve the Bay and our Up North quality of life. The Watershed Center and its modest staff

bring in millions of dollars of grant money annually to fund a wide variety of projects. Their mission: “to advocate for clean water in Grand Traverse Bay and act to protect and preserve its 1,000-square-mile watershed,” which covers major portions of Grand Traverse, Leelanau, Antrim and Kalkaska counties. “Like the Lorax ‘speaks for the trees,’ The Watershed Center speaks for the water in Grand Traverse Bay,” says Program Director Sarah U’Ren. The Watershed Center is the only nonprofit advocacy group in the area focused solely on Grand Traverse Bay. The organization conducts on-the-ground fieldwork, including restoration, monitoring and research, as well as public education, focusing on issues such as stormwater runoff, invasive species and healthy beaches. Remember the days when beaches would be closed after a rain because of E.Coli contamination? The Watershed Center led major beach restoration projects totaling $2 million focused on reducing bacterial contamination at East Bay and Bryant parks and the Village of Suttons Bay. “We are all connected to the Bay so we work locally to ensure a personal connection and sense of place,” says Executive Director Christine Crissman. “We base our actions on the most current science and advocate for practices that protect the Grand Traverse Bay ecosystem.”

This can be seen today in the Kids Creek Restoration Project, which focuses on removing the creek from the impaired waters list. After several years of research and monitoring to create a restoration plan, The Watershed Center began active restoration and is currently working with Munson Medical Center to reduce stormwater runoff and pollution into Kids Creek. Future phases will focus on other segments of the creek. Support from the community is essential for The Watershed Center to continue the work they do. “Most of our grant money goes back into the community to cover project costs, but we still need resources to pay staff and do our everyday work,” says Crissman. “The more resources we have, the bigger difference we can make.” We all know that the water quality of the Bay and the economic vitality of the region are dependent on one another, and clean water contributes to the high quality of life in this area. “The Watershed Center cares deeply for the resource that drives our local economy, provides clean drinking water, enables various forms of recreation and adds to our overall quality of life,” says Crissman, “and we will continue to work tirelessly to protect it.” Learn more at www.gtbay.org or call 935-1514

Mom-A-Roo – Help-A-Roo

“MODERN MOM” LOCAL NEW BOOK AUTHOR KRISTY KURJAN (AND OUR STYLE EDITOR!) WITH HER TWIN BOYS ALEXANDER AND BROOKS.

Naptime is a sacred time for us moms! It’s that little breath of aah we get to ourselves in the middle of the day. That’s how local modern mom Kristy Kurjan dreamed up her adorable board book Nap-A-Roo. Ever since she became a doting mom to her identical twin boys on July 4, 2012, she has been whirling with ingenious ideas! “There are so many goodnight books, but no nap books. Napping is such a hurdle; we need rituals. This is fast and fun, and moms can feel good about reading them a book. It’s bright and vibrant and at 16 pages, easy to take in.” The inspiration for Nap-A-Roo comes all the way from her mom, who is a Preschool teacher. “My mom would always add an A-ROO on the end of words for as long as I can remember. So it was a habit already with my boys, let’s take a Nap-a-roo with a Kangaroo that lives in the zoo.” Kristy has always wanted to write a book, and the thought occurred to her this was the perfect compromise. “First and foremost I’m a mom, but this could fulfill my creative and entrepreneurial spirit. I believe in this book wholeheartedly.” She created all the characters along with the illustrator. “They all have personality! The cow, the kangaroo, etc., they are modern and hipster, not like oldfashioned books.” Where-A-Roo will you be able to find this adorable book? Hot off the press soon, locally it will be available at Sweet Pea and Horizon Books. And keep an Eye-A-Roo out, Kristy is on a roll. If this does well, she’s already got ideas for More-A-ROO! www.facebook.com/naparoobook

T.C. Captain Rorke Miller recently won the prestigious Maritime Heroes Award for his tireless work for the last three years in the Maritime Heritage Alliance SAIL Champion Program, which gives at-risk teens a chance to crew the 53-foot-long, gaff-rigged cutter, Champion. “My dream and goal is inspiring lives through water activities,” said Rorke. This has had a profound impact on teens who so desperately need support and a moral compass. They are foster youths all searching for guidance and someone to look up to, which is how RED8 Boatworks was inspired—the SAIL program can only be a safe haven during the summer, not all seasons. Idle hands are the devils tools! RED8 Boatworks Program Director Adam Burks has an impressive boat building resume, and all winter he has been busy with the teens building boards. Others have also joined, dedicating their time to these needy teens and While Building Boats are Building Our Community. The teens are acquiring woodworking skills, and learning to start and finish

ASK

ANGELA BY ANGELA GOODALL

BRING ON THE

BEACH SAND

PHOTO: GRETA MYERS

So many of our residents move here to enjoy the beauty that surrounds us. The woods and trees, the water and beaches. They come here to lead a more relaxing life and entertain friends and family in their homes. With this lifestyle, a design challenge that has always faced us is how to relax and enjoy nature while having materials that are either durable enough to withstand beach sand being brought in on bare feet or weather naturally with time as to not look damaged and worn.

Angela Goodall is the lead designer and co-owner of Kitchen Choreography with her husband Mike.

The horizontal surfaces tend to be the biggest area of focus, with flooring typically being the main concern. So many of our homes have hardwood floors, but we have realized that a beautifully installed hardwood floor will scratch and not be as water resistant as tile or another hard surface. Starting in the commercial industry, materials that amazingly look like natural wood have been developed to combat the wear and tear that daily living will take on a standard wood floor. Porcelain Tile or Vinyl Tile that look like wood are growing in popularity. In part for the ease of maintenance, but mostly due to the technology developing these materials has made them incredibly realistic. A big key to working with them as a substitute, is to verify sizes. The longer the lengths, the more realistic the look. Also, work with your installer closely to ensure

the grout joints are held as tightly as possible and that the grout is a color that will blend away. For the consumer that would never consider an “imitation, reclaimed wood is very popular. These floors are being harvested from many different resources, but most commonly old industrial buildings that are being disassembled. 100+ year old trees grew slower and therefore are typically more dense and hard than newer wood. The wood has also had a chance to condition to the elements for a long time and will be less likely to shrink and swell with our changes in humidity. So as you are planning a new home or remodel, go out shopping and look for some of the new products on the market that can make your investment stand the test of time.

W

hen Jim and Barbara King broke ground to build their retirement

home, it was a lifelong dream finally coming true. It was such a monumental occasion that as Jim watched and filmed the bulldozers, recording the event for his four-year-old grandson, he quietly choked up with tears in his eyes as he recalled the special moment he and Barbara promised each other they would do this. That was when their son was almost the same age as their grandson, some 37 long years ago when they were summering on Little Glen Lake in a charming cottage named Wanders Rest. They were big city wanderers then, and they had found their happily-ever-after place in Northern Michigan where living a dream seemed possible. MAY/JUNE 2014 | BAY LIFE NORTH

53

It was their first Up North Summer. Both worked for GM downstate and had recently married. Jim was already an adored stepfather to Barbara’s son, Jason, from a previous marriage. Jim’s fond memories of summers spent here meandering the wineries and exploring M22, and climbing the dunes with friends while going to college at Central Michigan had told him that this would be the perfect family getaway. And he was right. The cottage came complete with a rowboat, and specific instructions that Jason could wander free splashing at least a quarter of a mile into the water and still be safe at knee level. There was a coveted campfire spot, too, and after a few days of pure bliss, in the cool evening breeze by the glowing light of the fire, they hatched their plan. Barbara initiated the idea, saying, “You travel all around the world for work, but can we retire here? It has so much to offer.”

54

MAY/JUNE 2014 | BAY LIFE NORTH

They continued to summer here almost every year, falling in love with the area a little bit more each time. As Jason got older, they outgrew Wanders Rest and found their new paradise retreat at The Homestead. They forged Up North traditions every year, and met people along the way, like Bob Sutherland and a little thing called a Boomchunka Cookie and t-shirts being sold out of trunk of a car, not to mention the little company doing OK named Cherry Republic— you may have heard of it? They also met Richard Bruening from the Stained Glass Cabinet Company as a young artist just on his way up. All of these are friendships made a long time ago. Now Jim and Barbara have a wonderful reminder of that personal bond, Richard’s handmade sailboat window that is stunning in their new home that Barbara designed.

BARBARA LIKES FORMAL DINING ROOMS

MAY/JUNE 2014 | BAY LIFE NORTH

55

Things happen for a reason. After years of searching for just the right little plot of land that they could call home, Jim and Barbara heard that a spot just down the road from the roaming hills and wineries Jim had been mesmerized by so many years prior might be available. It was a hot lead, an insider tip on a sold-out, lusted over location not for sale. Swooping in, they made their move, pulling onto the lot and calling the owner. They negotiated the deal on the spot! Next, the savvy city folk (well, not quite—Jim was raised on a farm with horses) decided on the builder who would fulfill all their criteria! It’s quite an undertaking to build someone’s home that has been a deep-rooted goal desired and visualized for 37 years! (That’s a lot of pressure for mere mortals.) But Dean Adams of Bay Area Contracting was up for the almost impossible challenge, and he surpassed every expectation to create their Nantucket-themed divine abode. “He was wonderful. As well as building a stunning home we are overjoyed with, he came up with the most innovative ideas. If there was a leftover space he could use in a unique way, he did,” said Jim. Case in point, their grandson Brandon’s hideaway toy room is a nook under the stairs, his valuable treasures of LEGOs and trucks elegantly hidden behind a half door. They also have a nifty Wine Closet, and bookshelf closets in the most unusual of places. Most importantly, this home also incorporates its own unique, full-size elevator, which is a smart addition once you get to retirement age. Surprisingly, one of the most favorite rooms in the house is actually the Laundry room. It has a comfortable cork floor, and instead of just dirty and clean clothes, this laundry room contains memories, too! An old Singer sewing machine sits here, as well as shelves adorned with old Raggedy Ann dolls. With even a cross stich hanging on the wall by her mom, it truly is a Happy Place for Barbara.

NOT JUST ANY LAUNDRY ROOM, THIS ONE CONTAINS AN OLD SINGER SEWING MACHINE AND FAVORITE RAGGEDY ANN DOLLS SIT ON SHELVES.

“I wanted it more traditional, I like separate rooms not wide open like most today.”

She loves her kitchen, too. It feels more traditional, not wide open like the kitchens in many of today’s homes. Jim of Creative Kitchens designed it and crafted all of their built-in cabinets throughout the entire house. “The most fun part was picking all the hardware,” says Barbara. Off the kitchen is the affectionately named Michigan room, an allweather everyday room that dazzles in the sun and is equally as cozy by the fire on a snowy day. They lovingly embrace the ever-changing weather with a vast view of the West Bay to the left and the East Bay to the right. There’s never a shortage of sunsets or sunrises from any room in the whole house. Those sunny days overflow outside on the classic covered porches. Just beyond is the striking stone patio with a cascading waterfall that houses a 100-gallon reservoir that Barbara also designed. 58

“We knew we wanted Alder Wood and we watched the bar being made. It’s right from the center of a tree.”

JIM’S MAN CAVE WALLS ARE ADORNED WITH HIS TREASURES FROM HUNTING TRIPS OUT WEST. 60

MAY/JUNE 2014 | BAY LIFE NORTH

As Jim saunters downstairs in our tour, it’s hard to ignore his proud swagger. You understand his pride when you reach the spectacular “Ultimate man cave” at the bottom of the stairs. Egor, the Russian Boar, welcomes you there! Jim, is an avid out-West hunter, and the room resembles the most opulent of gentleman hunting lodges, complete with a rich Alder wood custom-made bar (by TC Millworks) and a matching custom-made pool table. Pairs of eyes stare down, gracing the walls; all were at one time the thrill of the hunt for Jim. Not everyone’s cup of tea (think Sleders Tavern and kissing the moose), but you can’t argue at the uniqueness—you don’t see this everywhere! If that doesn’t make husbands drool in envy, maybe Jim’s four-car garage will. Even though he’s enjoying a nice relaxing retirement, there’s a hot yellow Corvette at the ready! Their home oozes so much sophistication and a casual elegance that there are simply too many details to mention and the pictures so wonderfully speak volumes. So we’ll end where we started by saying this house is fit for a KING, their family name. The day they broke ground was the wedding day of the Future King of England, April 29, 2011. A funny coincidence, but a real royal day indeed, and whenever there is a prince charming and a beautiful maiden, there is always a happily ever after. And this July they celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary in their Northern Michigan dream castle. It was a plan that took 37 years, and we were thrilled to be entrusted with sharing their beautiful story.

NORTHERN MICHIGAN

EXPOSED

BY JOHN A. GESSNER

“Mishkogiizhigut” Words cannot match the power of nature. As I sat in awe of this remarkable spring morning, I struggled for words to describe it. Rather than fighting it, I embraced the silence and immersed myself in the beauty unfolding before my eyes.
