FROM THE
“It’s impossible,” said Pride. “It’s Risky,” said Experience. “It’s Pointless,” said Reason. “Give it a try,” whispered the HEART.
At Cherry Republic in Glen Arbor, two people who listened to their hearts; Bob Sutherland and his proud Mom Mary, pictured with my husband Tom and I.
Ahhh.
Summer in Northern Michigan, the precious few months we are finally compensated for weathering the storms and seeing the silver lining on too many grey days. This is the time we remember, when Pure Magic spins its spell and holds us in its grasp. Whether you were lucky enough to be born here, or you hatched a plan along the way, chances are you remember when you fell head over heels in love with the area and its lifestyle. Our home sweet home lies where others visit, vacation and dream. We challenged the impossible, took risks, stared down reason, gained experience and listened to our hearts to plant roots right here, and because we gave it a try, we are richly rewarded. How sweet is that? I was romanced by the area (and my Michigan native husband, Tom) in the summer of 2005. After a trip to East Lansing to visit his ailing Mom, we drove north. “The water is just like the Caribbean,” he boasted with a wink and a smile. Of course, I found that very hard to believe—in Michigan? “Are you kidding?” was my reply. Of course he got the last laugh! I was in awe and amazement and drop dead WOW as I experie nced The Most Beautiful Place in America. (Sleeping Bear Dunes hadn’t been voted that officially yet. It was still kind of a secret that “those in the know” were able to share as a special gift!) It was a glorious sunny day, and the few clouds were big, white and fluffy, just floating aimlessly in a bright, bold and clear blue sky. We drove for miles along M22 taking it all in, stopping at every quaint little town buzzing with energy, shopping for artisan treasures, and of course hitting the beach to hunt for coveted Petoskey stones. We had such a carefree time taking in the Midwest easy breezy atmosphere, we hit the main highway and reality with an unwelcome jolt, namely road construction the entire way to Detroit and missing our flight back home to Washington, D.C. On our M22 daytrip, I also vividly remember stopping in Glen Arbor, where Tom said I just had to see some famous cherry store and have a big cookie called a
editor
Boomchunka. I didn’t quite get all the hubbub that day, but the place was packed. The same cherry products appeared once again years later in 2010 after moving our family here. They were there, front and center in the beautiful welcome basket the old homeowners left on the kitchen counter for us. (Thank you again, Kara and Dan Madion!) Now, after living here for five years, I know with true conviction there is nothing that encapsulates the area, people or the lifestyle of Northern Michigan quite like Bob Sutherland’s Cherry Republic Cherry Empire! This is the part of being a publisher that I love, because for this issue Tom and I actually got to meet and sit down with Bob. Barefoot, he sat on the sun-drenched white bench outside the Glen Arbor store as we listened to his inspiring journey. How he started Cherry Republic back in 1989 and the somewhat well-told story by now of the humble beginnings selling T-shirts out of his car. While we chatted, his mom, Mary, walked by. It was a serendipitous meeting, as she lovingly recalled the origins that made the entire adventure possible. Dating way back, she and her husband came from Ohio with six kids in tow. She recalled the wild ride they took moving the family full-time originally into their summer cottage. They were two teachers taking risk and reason by the horns and really listening to their hearts for a better family lifestyle. As Mary told us, her words to her husband were, “We have six kids and we’re always going to be poor. We may as well be poor and happy living where we want to live.” Bob laughed as she recalled it, looked at me and said, “That’s your quote, there it is!” And there it is, that gentle reminder to smile and just take it all in. It happens a lot to me, stressed out about deadlines, a 55-degree July day that should have been a hot boat day! Maybe it’s sitting in the crazy summer traffic, construction and all. Whatever it is, take a moment, breathe and recall being blessed. Hit the beach for five minutes and gaze awhile at the glistening blue of the water. Be awed by the nature around us. Life is short, and little things are not little, they are everything. Heck, Bob created an entire republic just from mere cherries, all because he knew he wanted to always live here. It’s pretty mind-blowing when you think about it. So with this issue in hand, take a little time out. Sit down on the beach, by the pool, at the lake, on your boat, dock, deck, garden or your front porch. Maybe with a Boomchunka cookie or cherries you picked by hand, washed down with some cherry POP, local wine or a brewski. And raise a glass to Living the Northern Dream. Boom Chugga Lugga and Cheers,

Hot Havana Night Cuban Food and Flare heated up The Children’s House Montessori School Gym May 1st when it was transformed into a Cuban Fiesta for their Annual Gala Fundraiser. Guests were encouraged to rock the Cuban theme donning flowers and fedora’s and welcomed at the door with freshly made mojitos. Inside they were treated to a delicious authentic dinner prepared and served by local Caliente restaurant Georgina’s. The engaging live auction was hosted on stage by John Cueter and Missy Russell and the bidding was fast, fierce and fun with paddles high, raising mucho peso’s for the school. Up for grabs included Aerosmith concert tickets, private plane rides, custom chef dinners and Max Bauer Meats for a year and much more!

EXPANDING EXCHANGE You know what they say, TWO are better than ONE. Now The Exchange has travelled up the famed M-22 with an expansion to Suttons Bay. Even more sassy shoppers can experience the fun boutique experience only found at The Exchange. The Exchange in Traverse City opened its doors right next to Pavlova Salon and Spa (also owned by Pierre and Ann Pujos) in 2013, embracing the Boho Chic style, and has since become a favorite for locals and visitors alike. “We will have many of the same items our clients love—clothing, unique gifts, bags and fragrance, etc.,” says Pierre. The store is not merely a Pop-Up store that’s here for summer and gone tomorrow; it is here to stay and open year-round. No plans for a salon yet like The Exchange in TC, but it’s a big space, so you never know? 217 N. St. Joseph St. Suttons Bay.
Peek at Perry When Peg Jonkhoff and Fred Hoisington co-authored the Perry Hannah history book together back in 2013, their dream and commitment was to invest 100 percent of the books proceeds back into an educational work of art for the community. Their plan was to dedicate a larger-than-life bronze statue in the image of Traverse City’s Founding Father Perry Hannah, immortalizing his gifts to the town and honoring his legacy for generations to come. This has almost become a reality, as local sculptor Verna Bartnick is busy with the final finishing touches before the big reveal on Aug. 3rd at the new Hannah Plaza. Much of Peg’s overwhelming passion for history originates from her family business; The Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home that is located inside the Historic Home on 6th Street that Perry Hannah himself built back in 1891. “The entire community is invited to the unveiling and afterglow reception. We would like to thank so many people for making this dream a reality,” says Peg. Don’t miss the Aug. 3rd event. It’s a chance to celebrate an incredible man who made much of our history in Traverse City possible. Needle in a Haystack Lizzi Lambert’s Haystacks has a new location on Union Street in Old Town, Traverse City. It may be a little harder to find, but it’s sure worth the effort. Hunting for treasures on sale racks is always a fun pastime, and at her new Haystacks Store every item has a sale tag. Hello! If you’re a serious shopaholic, that’s music to the ears! “I’d like to call it a Customer Appreciation Store,” says Lizzi. The store looks like any of her other locations, chockablock full of dresses, pants, and tops and, of course, the Haystacks famed skirts made right here in Northern Michigan—not to mention jewelry, bags, and a whole lot more. Many were shipped in from other stores and overruns from the design studio, and it makes up an entire inventory in one. But all on SALE! “I’ve always loved Old Town so was intrigued with the idea,” says Lizzi. Just two steps over from the Blue Tractor, Haystacks is sure going to have Old Town hopping!

Centennial Celebration Never underestimate the power of a woman. This year celebrates the 100th birthday of the Omena Women’s Club (OWC). Way back in 1915, it all started with seven determined and forward-thinking women, and it is now arguably the oldest women’s club in Michigan. Women in the area got together, fostered friendships, and focused on community needs. During both World Wars, OWC members supported the war efforts; more recently, they have supported the American Cancer Society and the American Red Cross. Today, the OWC supports Blessings in a Backpack, providing fresh and packaged foods to over 180 needy and low-income children in the Leelanau County schools. One hundred years of doing good is a really big deal, and the fabulous ladies plan to celebrate this momentous event in the girliest of ways with a fun lunch and fashion show. They know how to party, and you’re all invited! There are two food groups in the world—one you put cheese on, and the one you put chocolate on!
Dinner and a Show It’s time for Bella Fortuna. Summer celebrates the only time you can make a delicious date with Italy in Lake Leelanau at the beautiful Italian, garden-inspired restaurant. The authentic food, the atmosphere and a chance to meet the enchanting owners, Bob and Jane who actually live in Florence part of the year, is reason alone to visit. But Bella Musica will further entice your senses. This is a feast and toast to the Arts. You’ll experience mouthwatering cuisine and a magnificent live theatre show all in one. The exciting concept was dreamt up by Bob and Jane, and it premiered last year to sellout audiences and rave reviews. It’s a not-to-miss experience that runs for five weeks beginning July 7. Make sure to make your reservations. Dinner starts at 6 p.m., and the show goes on at 7:30 p.m.! www.bellafortunarestaurant.com
Sparkle and Dine If the stunning, crystal clear views of Bay Harbor beckon you, you’ll be happy to know that waterfront dining choices recently met their match with The Inn at Bay Harbor’s launch of The Vintage Chophouse and Wine Bar. This combines the classic steakhouse with an upscale lounge area, all overlooking majestic blue waters. The newly designed restaurant offers lakeside patio seating, ambience and a menu full of modern interpretations of steak dishes from Executive Chef Barbie Papi. "Vintage is stylish and so are our local foodies and resort patrons. It's a sure fit," says Ami Klykken, director of operations for The Inn at Bay Harbor. Take a Trip Back The promise of the return of The Pointer Boat to Harbor Springs’ glistening waters is finally a reality. After many years of rest, the 1934 vintage boat has been beautifully restored and is available for harbor cruises. Until 1962, what sits now on the water as The Pointer Room at Stafford’s Pier Restaurant used to be the boathouse for the water taxi to and from the exclusive resort Harbor Point. The Pointer, as it was named, ran between the village of Harbor Springs and Harbor Point, creating vital transportation in the summer for the residents. One-and-half-hour tours will depart from Dudley’s Deck at Stafford’s Pier Restaurant, where riders can experience the history and beauty of Harbor Springs. Ahoy Matey. www.pointerboat.com
Toast to Nature We don’t really need an excuse to drink wine, but here’s a great one just in case! Chateau Grand Traverse recently partnered with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to support Michigan’s State Parks, Trails and Waterways. CGT winemaker Bernd Croissant crafted 3 of their most popular styles to tastefully represent our states unique natural resources. In a fun and unique way with coordinating labels you can choose what best fits your outdoors personality and your palette. “We wanted to produce wines that can pair easily with everyday activities – a reward for a long hike or a complement to the picnic basket,” said CGT President Eddie O’Keefe. “As wine growers and producers, we make our living from the land, so it seemed a natural fit to support those who use Michigan’s natural resources for recreation.” Woods – sweet red wine, Picnic - semidry white wine and Waters - sweet white wine. Sip with zero guilt and keep the wine flowing because it’s all for a good cause, all for nature. 50% of net profits go to DNR to support our great outdoors. Cheers to that! It’s summer. Slow down and take an early morning stroll. Head over to the beach while it’s still quiet, reflect on life and rediscover the gift of living in a vacation town. Along the way, your tummy will grumble. Just like the tourists in search of an uncharted taste adventure, head over to Frenchies. “Where?” you ask. Well, if you blink, you may miss this true hidden gem of a place that gives new meaning to the term intimate setting. It’s just footsteps from the beach and inside seats only about eight with a few more on the backyard patio. The walls are pure Tuscan, two brick arches lead to the kitchen, exotic curtains drape and eclectic art is on display. The real treasure to behold is, of course, the tantalizing cuisine. Mouthwatering daily offerings are listed on the magical blackboard; these have the power to take you on a unforgettable food journey. Feast on scrumptious fare, bursting with flavor and made to order. Revel in the sound of omelets being whipped, a sizzling stove and the delectable aroma floating in the air. Frenchies Famous lives up to the hype with their Palatial Pastrami Sandwich. But also try crepes, omelets, and tempting tacos, to name a few! Northern Michigan Wine Trails For those that have taken advantage of the Old Mission Wine Trail and the Leelanau Wine Trail, you may have overlooked another wine trail. Yes there is another wine trail that get’s a bit less recognition from the Northern Michigan wine region, but the Bay View Wine Trail is certainly one not to miss. If you are traveling north towards Petoskey, the number of wineries doing their wine thing will pleasantly surprise you. Starting off in Ellsworth (if traveling North) you can visit Royal Farms and continuing on all the way to Harbor Springs Winery, in you guessed it, Harbor Springs. There are another 7 wineries dotted between these two, and surely worth the trip. For more information you can go to http:// bayviewwinetrail.com/ for their specific locations, tasting room information and travel planning. Replace excuses with EFFORT, Replace laziness with DETERMINATION, and everything else will fall into PLACE
Modus Operandi Bikini Season is finally here, that time when layers come off and the excuses have nowhere to hide. Yikes. This is when you abruptly realize you kept meaning to make the time for exercise, but you have been too busy juggling motherhood, career, home and everything in-between. If that sounds like you, this just may be kismet! Meet Megan Madion, your new BFF, who created the Modus 45 system with you in mind! The loyal local women who are Modus Maniacs all rave about it and look amazing, too. Up until now it was almost a secret club; seemingly just the chosen few knew about this because the studio was actually in Megan’s home. She created the system and tested it on trusted friends first, many of whom are now instructors. Its popularity has grown mostly from word of mouth— and the proof in the pudding results, of course. Now Megan’s fitness system, Modus 45, just moved to a brand new studio location in the recently renovated Warehouse MRKT. So this is the perfect time for an introduction. Like us, Megan juggled her career and motherhood, but she always had a passion to exercise to the extreme, running marathons, triathlons and even Nordic skiing. (Phew!) But after an injury, she found the recovery process long and while taking care of her newly adopted baby, she was also exhausted. “I was so tired, the thought of going to a class was dreadful. I just wanted to lie down. While my daughter was sleeping, I laid down on her floor and just started moving a little bit.” Those moves inspired an entire workout with a fresh approach to wellness. It’s less than 60 minutes, it’s super fun in a class environment with movements to music, blending relaxation, core strength, muscle sculpting, flexibility with bursts of cardio—it really does work your butt off, literally. Plus, it’s for all fitness levels. We actually say this from experience, as we too have tried it. What do you have to lose? You know what they say, “You MAKE time for things that are important to you.” So give it a try, Make the commitment to your bikini and, more importantly, to yourself. You’ll feel better, and when Mom is happy everyone is happy! 144 Hall St | Modus45.com PHOTOS COURTESY OF MICHAEL POEHLMAN PHOTOGRAPHY

Founder of Bay Area Recycling for Charities (BARC) WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO NORTHERN MICHIGAN? Cindy and I wanted to raise our kids (Jakob and Jenna) in a community where we felt connected. Traverse City provides a great place to raise a family, enjoy community, and since it is a vacation destination, feel like we are always on vacation. Except when we are working all the time. BARC IS EVERYWHERE, IN A NUTSHELL WHAT DOES YOUR COMPANY DO? We recycle nearly everything (at least we try to). The premise of our organization was always to reduce what we landfill as much as possible. And to inspire our community to do this, we organized as a non-profit 501(c)(3) that donates our profits to local non-profts. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB? I love the special events and making events nearly zero waste, and working with the community and my staff. GIVE US AN INSPIRING FACT ABOUT RECYCLING. Through education, our hard work, and a connected community we are making traverse city a greener city every day. OKAY, ENOUGH TRASH TALK: WHAT SUPER POWER WOULD YOU CHOSE AND WHY? I like Super Man’s vision power. You know where he can weld steel and melt rock. If I were able to use this super power in an anaerobic vacuum we could turn all of our trash into a methane gas and use this to power our city WHAT’S SOMETHING YOUR KIDS WOULD TELL US ABOUT YOU? They would say that he is a great dad and that he is very hard working, but he spends too much time in the office thinking about garbage, and not enough time with his kids. (Jenna actually helped me type this one in) WHO’S YOUR ROLE MODEL, AND WHY? I have lots but Ray Minervini and his crew has been a huge influence in the startup of BARC. ANY WORDS OF WISDOM THAT YOU LIVE BY? I try not to take everything too seriously. Life is just too short to worry TELL US SOMETHING THAT WOULD SURPRISE US ABOUT YOU? I love Punk Rock!!! WHAT’S YOUR FAMILY’S PERFECT SUMMER DAY? We all wake up late, and sit on the sun porch with coffee. I would make breakfast. Maybe head to Good Harbor Beach. Our friends call (please call) and invite us on their boat sailing around the bay. Then Sushi at Red Ginger (if we can get in) and we grab a beer at the Workshop, head home and stoke up a camp fire at our farm house in Cedar. 22

Connie Deneweth CEO Traverse City State Bank and winner of the 21st annual Athena Grand Traverse Award WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO NORTHERN MICHIGAN? My husband (then fiancé) purchased a Concrete Redimix operation in Traverse City from the Bankruptcy Court. What interested him was the growth opportunity in our 5 county area. HOW DID YOU GET INTO BANKING? After college I became a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with a national accounting firm. As a CPA I was assigned to an audit engagement at a Bank. While auditing the Bank I quickly learned that the banking industry was extremely interesting and suited my professional strengths. After 3 years of auditing that bank they hired me to run their internal Audit Department. I loved the banking industry instantly! HOW ARE YOU AT BALANCING YOUR OWN CHECKBOOK? Excellent, I review my account weekly to make sure it is in balance. I need to set a GREAT example at the office. IF YOU WEREN’T A BANKER WHAT WOULD YOU BE? I would have loved to be an obstetrician. It would be such an honor to witness the arrival of God’s miracles on a regular basis. But I never pursued that course because I hated my first chemistry class. WHO’S YOUR ROLE MODEL, AND WHY? My parents and my husband’s parents are my role models. They were honorable Christians who focused their lives on faith & family. My father was a business role model to me because he always entered into business transactions where everyone won. TELL US SOMETHING YOUR KIDS WOULD SAY ABOUT YOU? They would say that we can’t go anywhere without running into people who know me or I know them. Sometimes it drives them crazy because a quick trip to the grocery store can turn into a longer ordeal than they planned. WHAT’S SOMETHING THAT WOULD SURPRISE US ABOUT YOU? I love to figure skate and play hockey with my family. WHAT ARE SOME WORDS YOU LIVE BY? Help others first without any expectation in return. WHAT’S YOUR FAMILY’S FAVORITE SUMMER PASTIME? Boating on Long Lake.

THE COVE
Shanty Town Saunter Michigan Summers are about making memories and making haste while the sun shines. The days are long, the temperatures are warm, and meandering along the coveted road of our beloved M-22 is almost a rite of passage. As you take the turn into Leland, the charming land of Historic Fishtown never disappoints, reminding us of the uniqueness of the area we call home. So sit by the water, recharge and renew, taking it all in by stepping into The Cove.
Boarded up, shut tight and closed all winter, The Cove propels itself smack bang into your summer plans with a “Here Comes The Sun” launch party on the outside deck every year in May. A Northern Michigan summer is not complete without indulging in their trademark World Famous Drink—The Chubby Mary—and The Cove’s Seafood Chowder and Fresh Lake Michigan Whitefish. (They have been known to go through 700 pounds of whitefish in a busy week!) It is summer and the days should be carefree, so they don’t take things too seriously around here, except of course when it comes to making sure customers are happy, well fed and their glasses are full. So it’s a fun place to spend a few pleasurable hours on any given day. Rick Wanroy has owned The Cove for what probably feels like forever to him. It’s actually since 1986, when he purchased the business from a large restaurant company he worked for down in Detroit. The location
for them wasn’t doing well and Rick had a great reputation, so they suggested he could do better. He saw the amazing setting on the water and decided to go for it! Slight catch at the time was the 20 percent interest rates, and not one bank would lend him money as a new business! “I had four credit cards with high limits, so I asked for maximum cash advances,” Rich recalls. “They all said yes, but the APR was 22 percent. Why quibble over 2 percent when the bank said ‘No’ at 20 percent?” The rest, of course, is history, and he even has the four shiny gold credit cards framed on the wall; this is where youngest son Chris exclaims, “Oh, that’s what that is. I never knew!” These days Rick is passing on the Chubby Torch to sons Sean and Chris, who also work on the everyday operation of running the restaurant smoothly. “It’s like opening a new restaurant every year, with the summer starting up again. We have a lot of people that always come back, but we put a lot of
work into hiring the right people,” says Sean. “A lot of college kids that worked here come back and visit, now married with their own kids,” says Chris. “Ugh, it makes me feel ancient,” Rick chimes in. Rick has earned his Snow Bird status, migrating to West Florida for the winters, but he returns for the season when the restaurant re-opens. Behind the scenes he is a talented baker, making all the breads from scratch, and the pies, too. You can also find him and his quick wit, cracking a few jokes or vocalizing sarcastic lines as he engages with locals and visitors alike. He is a funny guy. The vacationers are enamored, having met the owner, and the locals are all dear friends with their resident bar stool! “Dad has a passion and cares about what he does, he loves it,” says Chris. perfectly for the heart of Fishtown. It’s an eclectic mix of mainly nautical elements from sailboats to propels, outboards, canoes, fishing lures, classic signage—the list goes on and accents are everywhere your eye wanders. It’s a vintage paradise of boaters’, fishermen’s and sailors’ tinkering toys and maybe even the inspiration for the original man cave? And none of it was planned. Rick’s dad had some model airplanes to help fill the empty walls, next came a wooden canoe, hand-built by two wartime fighter pilots, and it just kept going. The Cove could almost be a stand-alone museum as every novelty holds a story. Ask about the boat that was cut in half; this involves a wife and a divorce settlement. And the stand-in propeller that saved a sailboat in the Chicago to Mackinac race. The atmosphere inside is unmistakably nautical, but for the real Shanty Town experience you have to venture outside. Overlooking what is arguably the best water view in all of Northern Michigan, you can sit front and center in this hustling, bustling fishing village on two levels of sun-glistening outdoor dining. Historic Fishtown is like its own little world. Time could stand still, and it’s an atmosphere almost reminiscent of a dreamt-up Disneyworld village complete with boat rides! Boats come and go, the gushing 30

For the real Shanty Town experience sit outside, to savor the food and the view. sounds of the water falling below into crystal clear depths. Throw in a myriad of visitors from all over the world wandering along the docks in and out of what were once fishing shanties, now all trendy little stores busy peddling their wares. The fifth generation Carlson’s Fishery is further down, and in the distance is the Manitou Island Transit with daily ferry service to the Manitou Islands. Fishtown was designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1973 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. As you sit awhile and take it all in, order the famous Chubby Mary and peruse your menu. The Cove’s Bloody Mary recipe can actually boast its very own trademark. With a garnish of a Smoked Chub Fish staring you down, it is served in a branded Cove glass. With a blend of Vodka, tomato juice, horseradish, lime and lemon juice, and Worchestershire sauce, it soaks up the smokiness of the
Chub. It took on a life of its own after Food legend Mario Batali, who summers here, let out the secret in Bon Appetit Magazine. Its popularity became Epic and it has been famous ever since, even featured in Playboy Magazine. People have literally travelled from all over the world to try it, and it washes down fabulously with Fish and Chips. So make sure you saunter over to The Cove on your M-22 warm day travels. Rick also owns a bright red amphicar that sits outside the restaurant on many days and makes a great photo op. Whether you come for the Chubby Mary, the whitefish, the view, the atmosphere, or to experience Rick’s baking and quick wit, we guarantee you’ll leave with a fun summer memory.

Once upon a time, long before Tim Allen’s voice pitched the magical lakeshores of Pure Michigan when M-22 was simply a road on a foldout paper map and Sleeping Bear Dunes slept quite soundly, there was a savvy teacher and mother of six children from Ohio named Mary Louise Sutherland. She had discovered this Up North Secret. After spending many blissful summers at their Glen Arbor cottage,
she said to her husband, “Let’s just live in our summer cottage. We have six kids and we’re always going to be poor. We may as well be poor and happy living where we want to live.” And so began the story of Mary’s son, Bob Sutherland, and the origins of The Cherry Republic Revolution. His cherry brick road has paved the way for many successful small companies to believe in Northern Michigan as the Land of Opportunity or—in his famous words—as the Land of Life, Liberty, Beaches and Pie. A young Bob in the early days
Bob pictured with his Mom in Glen Arbor
Young Bob, number four of the brood of six kids, was about seven when the family moved to Glen Arbor. “We were really the first park family to be raised in the arms of the Sleeping Bear Dunes,” says Bob. His parents, both educators, took a huge a pay cut in the process. “People forewarned them, saying we’d regret it, not many people can live up here,” recalls Bob.
"People come into the store many times to buy a little piece of Northern Michigan to take back as gifts for their dog sitters, their coworkers, the person picking up their mail, and they can sample what they are buying."
Today, all six of the Sutherland children have their own successful businesses. What a fitting tribute to their parents’ inspiration, spunk, intuitiveness and work ethic that truly is. Maybe it all started with the fact that the Sutherland kids had limited allowances. “We all had our little ventures. This was the Land of Opportunity in the summer and we were earning our right to it,” says Bob, who went from selling Petoskey stones to visitors as a kid into his college years when he came up with a great idea for a T-shirt. He didn’t have his degree yet, he explains. “I would make a bunch of money every summer and found going back to college uneventful, so I went on long bicycle trips, wilderness 34

adventures, trekking to Honduras and such.” He was enlightened by his travels, in awe of cultures and nature. “I was learning just as much as I would’ve in school,” he says. Ultimately, in 1989 the T-shirt Idea emerged as his “go-to” plan, simply selling them out of the trunk of his car for $10 to $12, depending on how much money he needed to make that day! He wholesaled them for $8 to about 15 stores that carried them, including the Cherry Festival. He eventually came to the realization that you can’t sell T-shirts year-round. What do people buy year-round? Food! With this lightbulb moment, The Boomchunka Cookie was born and the

Cherry Republic T-shirt logo made the perfect product label. The Cherry Republic BOOM had begun and a budding empire of over 170 more cherry-related items followed. The business outgrew the trunk of his car, of course, with four locations and millions of dollars in sales made in stores and cherry-filled packages shipped worldwide. The overwhelming success of the brand proves that Bob Sutherland’s Cherry Republic captures the unique essence of Northern Michigan, and is a true experience for visitors who want to sample our beloved region. We sat awhile with Bob on the bench in the garden of the Glen 36

Arbor store, mentally shook the cherry tree and a few fun facts fell! The Booomchunka Cookie’s inspiration was from out West on one of Bob’s many travels. “It was called The Montana Monster Cookie and was kind of a breakfast substitute you could eat and skip lunch—I thought, I can do this.” Bob found a baker, instructed that the must-have ingredient was cherries, and Boom, they created the cookie. “We made a bunch and had taste-testing surveys with my family,” he recalls. “The name Boomchunka just came from brainstorming. Who I am is not that serious, and the company is fun.”
The overwhelming success of the brand proves that Bob Sutherland’s Cherry Republic captures the unique essence of Northern Michigan, and is a true experience for visitors who want to sample our beloved region. Why the sampling? The answer here is a few different reasons, “I felt like it helped to sample. The strength of the cherry is it blends with so many other things. The weakness is its subtleness, what we found to counterpart is to sample. People come into the store many times to buy a little piece of Northern Michigan to take back as gifts for their dog sitters, their coworkers, the person picking up their mail, and they can sample what they are buying. By the time someone walks through the door, they are smiling,” says Bob. That’s because each Cherry Republic store is carefully orchestrated
to capture the fundamentals of the laid-back Northern Michigan culture. Raw elements and natural ruggedness are coupled with fun signage to portray the enormous generosity and spirit of the people. “If you came to my home, I would offer you some pie. Pie is a symbol of generosity, and the number one thing in our culture is Generosity. I want Cherry Republic to always be remembered as a giving company,” says Bob. He doesn’t just say that, he does it. One percent of all sales goes to worthy charities, and to-date he has given one million dollars JULY/AUGUST 2015 | BAY LIFE NORTH

in donations. He also gives back to the dedicated cherry farmers his business relies on; one percent charged on goods goes to a refundable tariff, pooled for farmland preservation and for agricultural programs that strengthen the farm economy to grow and succeed. So with every Cherry Republic purchase, you are indeed experiencing the area and helping to support it from deep in the roots all the way to the cherry on top! What’s next? Well, the Traverse City Flagship store was recently unveiled to huge oohs and aahs after a major renovation launched a café with a farm-to-table focus. Very soon, Warehouse Cherries Jubilee opens (we made that name up!), their 1.6 million-dollar manufacturing facility in Empire. Previously, much of the processing was scattered around in separate locations. With this addition of 25,000 square feet of Cherry Utopia, life will certainly not be the pits, but a big bountiful cherry world full of baking, packaging, jarring, bottling and a whole lot more all under one big roof. The original T-shirt that started the revolution has stood the test of time and is still on the shelves for purchase today, as well as that Boomchunka cookie. And the family cherry tree has a new generation of Sutherland dreamers blooming in Bob’s sons Colbrook, age 9, and Hawthorn, age 7. And if you happen upon a shoeless man in the Glen Arbor Cherry Republic garden who hails every local who passes by with a warm hello as he works, that’s probably Bob! “I’ll always be here. It’s the heart and soul. I’ll be sitting on this bench, or building that rock wall I’d like to finish. I know I have another 25 years here, and have so much more fine-tuning to do.” And the ambassador of cherries also has a few words of wisdom to share with us all, come those hustling, bustling summer days with which we locals have a love/hate relationship. “So many people are here because of a friend—it’s the secret we all shared, we are inviting them here.” Bob Sutherland’s Cherry Republic has certainly built a landmark from the elements of the Northern Michigan Experience we all adore and are lucky to call home.

NORTHERN
KIDS
Color the Region Summer in Northern Michigan just got a whole lot more fun for kids (and Moms) with the arrival of Color Fun Books. They are the brainchild of Traverse City native and Mom Cher Charest, who is a talented artist with a comic book background. Just published and hot off the presses, the three beautiful coloring books celebrate the nature and environment where our kids grow up: Sleeping Bear Dunes, Traverse City and Mackinac Island. It’s such a unique twist on a traditional coloring book; these are familiar places they know, easily capturing and holding your kids attention. They are interactive and will engage your kids with pages to color and pages for sketching. They even tell stories and list places to visit within the region. Our own daughter colored for hours and loved that she had climbed the Dunes and knew the Sleeping Bear Story. Cher’s own children, of course, were a huge inspiration. “My children, Chance, 19, and Cy Miro, 9, have the same love for the area as I. So my dedication in the books is for them, not just as their sentimental mom but more as a reminder that it's here, it's yours, go out and explore it, and by all means don't take our areas' beauty and culture for granted. I chose these three titles first since they held closest memories to my heart,” says Cher. Color Fun Books are simply charming, and we think you and your kiddos will agree! What kid doesn’t want to be a rad surfer dude? Besides being totally dope, Great Lakes surfing is incredible and lessons from the professionals over at Sleeping Bear Surf and Kayak would make for an unforgettable summer memory. Reservations are required, and their 1.5-hour surf lessons are just $40 and are held on the shores of Lake Michigan in Empire with an instructor to student ratio of 1:4 or less. You will also meet the Skrocki family who own the totally rockin surf shop in Empire; they live to ride the waves. On the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, 2015, the Up North community of Suttons Bay, Michigan, will seek to increase its Village population fivefold in order to make history, launching at least 3,151 kayaks and canoes into the pristine waters of Lake Michigan to reclaim the Guinness World Record for the largest raft of kayaks and canoes. "Strangers become fast friends on the water, and at least two couples have gone on to marry after connecting at Floatilla." PHOTO BY KEN SCOT
The record attempt was the dream of a Suttons Bay High School senior in 2012, and the Village of Suttons Bay rallied to put forth a valiant effort, though falling short of the 1,902 vessels needed to break the record. The event, dubbed “Floatilla, was wildly popular, and a second attempt was made in Suttons Bay in 2013. This time, the record was broken as 2,099 kayaks and canoes launched and successfully rafted. That record was broken in September 2014 in Inlet, New York, with 3,150 vessels. The chance to participate in a Guinness World Record attempt is not only an opportunity to make history, it is an opportunity to celebrate the beautiful waters of Lake Michigan, in the heart of the M-22 and 45th Parallel region. On event day, the small village is overrun by brightly colored kayaks and canoes as people make their way toward the three shoreline launch points. The excited energy is palpable; many participants arrive in the Village early to experience the town as well as the event. Each launch site itself is a park, and the primary site will be rimmed by food and beverage tents, and filled with people enjoying the festive surroundings: playing Frisbee, swimming, or simply sitting on the lawn with friends absorbing the atmosphere. This celebratory ambience builds up until the alarm sounds to get in the water. For over an hour, waves of paddlers leave shore and head toward a corral where they gather, holding on to one another to create the raft. At the time of count, the paddlers are signaled, and they must hold on to raft together, floating free of any anchor or lake bottom, for 30 seconds. The task sounds simple enough, but connecting thousands of kayaks and canoes solely by hand is not easy. It takes teamwork, building a sense of camaraderie among participants. Paddlers connect with everyone in reach, irrespective of the fact they may not know them. Strangers become fast friends on the water, and at least two couples have gone on to marry after connecting at Floatilla. Planes circle overhead, carrying photographers to record the event for official review by Guinness. When the count is over, paddles wave in the air to celebrate the attempt. The official count from Guinness is not received until months later. After the count, most paddlers head back to shore, where a raft of another sort is created on beaches and shoreline, as kayaks and canoes collect awaiting pick up. A sound stage will entertain those who choose to stay lakeside, and the boutique shopping and outdoor patios of local restaurants in the Village will beckon to others. Participants and spectators are encouraged to bring blankets to best enjoy the event food and drink, and linger on the family-friendly beach and in the September-warm lake waters. It takes a small army behind the scenes to pull off a record attempt of this magnitude, on the water, and this Village, indeed this region, comes together to add to its distinction by also being a world record holder. Time for Chillin and Grillin JASON HULET PHOTOGRAPHY
Yay! We made it. Summer is finally here. After so many cold winter days, we all look forward to sunshine, warmth and the outdoor activities summer has to offer. Outdoor kitchens are hot right now, just like summer temps, here in Northern Michigan. Just like inside, there are many approaches to set yourself up for outdoor entertaining. As always function first, so here are some of the key components when designing your outdoor kitchen you should include: #1-the grill of course! Weber is still the most popular brand, but many more are on the market. If you are building this into cabinetry or a structure, be sure to buy one of quality to last many years. These appliances have as many offerings in size and components comparable to the range in your kitchen. Take time to research some of the additional features that might be just for you, so they can be planned for. If you choose a rotisserie feature, power will be needed to run the motor and so on.

hip right now. Material usage is pretty standard with wood and stone being the most popular. Stainless cabinetry with wood inserts is a nice way to have the product that can withstand our elements, but warmed up with some teak or mahogany. Make sure your countertop material can withstand our freezing temperatures as not all granites are dense enough and will absorb water that can freeze and crack. Hopefully, this will help set you up for grilling success and make your next bbq something very memorable.
#2-outdoor refrigeration-whether it is for additional beverage storage or to house food supplies, this a convenience I highly recommend. A double drawer unit works really well for food supplies and/or beverages vs. a standard cooler.
Angela Goodall is the lead designer and co-owner of Kitchen Choreography with her husband Mike.
#3-Last but not least is a sink-it surely is convenient to be able to clean up without having to haul soapy water from the house. Plus let’s admit it, most grill masters can get pretty messy and that bbq sauce can go everywhere. Of course there are always plenty of extras! Popular items are wood fired pizza ovens, ice makers and the green egg charcoal grill is very

ill and Dave Kuznicki have come a long way from motoring their travel trailer Up North. As a boy, Dave was an Eagle Scout and their son followed in his footsteps. So being at one with nature, adventurebound, was a part of life for the Kuznickis. But in those early road trip days, they had one family rule. “We could never go to the same place more than once,” recalls Jill. That was until they fell in love with the area of Elk Rapids and Torch Lake. “In those days, Timber Ridge used to be called Yogi Bear. One day we drove by M-72 and saw signs for a new RV Resort. The roads were barely cut in, so in 2001 we bought a lot there. We had it as a home base, sold the travel trailer and upgraded to a Motor Home, and even bought a boat!” says Jill. After years of looking forward to weekends and summers getting to know the area and true lay of the land, the Kuznickis knew they wanted to break ground and build their forever home. And in January of 2010, they found the perfect spot. A few years before that they had been at a Home Show downstate and had come across the company Home Waters, owned by Traverse City’s Chad Brown. “He would send us properties that would pop up for over a year and was great to work with, as there is not a lot left of what we wanted. It had to be a specific type, undeveloped and untouched, as we really wanted to start from scratch,” recalls Jill. JULY/AUGUST 2015 | BAY LIFE NORTH

January 2010 was a mild winter with hardly any snow. Jill recalls walking the property that would become their perfect spot. It was 30 feet up, and they tried to figure out how they would gain access to the water. The property would take a lot of work, they knew, so based on that they made a somewhat lower than asking price offer. The Kuznickis didn’t make a deal that day, and they were OK to walk away. Chad called them a few months later, saying the owners were ready to talk. They closed on the lot in April and got to work! “We did it in phases. The first was to restore the lakefront to gain access. Brian Fernsemer of Inspiration Stonework in Kedawin was amazing; he placed the rocks like a true artist, and helped us with all of our permits and soil erosion and such. We took out trees, knowing we wanted a winding driveway, trying to only use the trees partly down or ones to the end of their lives,” Jill says. In 2011 the next phase was to install a dock, so they didn’t have to trailer their boat. They used a big Rubbermaid tub for storage, and this became their Lakefront Marina, complete with a solar-powered hoist so they were completely self-sufficient. When the time came for Jill and Dave to finally start planning out their home with an architect, they were fully prepared. Armed with a notebook, they had three lists: One of “Must Haves,” next of “Wants” and lastly, a list of “Would Be Nice.” At the time their planning began, all four of Jill and Dave’s parents were still alive so a main focus in the basement was a complete separate living area, handicapped accessible with an elevator, wider hallways and doorways and curb-less showers. The main floor would be Jill and Dave’s primary living space, and this

is where they had fun devising unique elements like the Octagon room overlooking the water with the floor medallion compass rose. And most important was a man cave for Dave. This was not just a special room in the house—he outlined an entire separate structure, 110 feet away from the main house. “Far enough away that he couldn’t hear me,” jokes Jill. Now that the perfect house was planned on paper, they needed a builder. They met him at another Home Show, Eric Render of Render Construction. A big part of their decision was based on the fact that Eric had a dedicated section for clients on his website, as the Kuznickis live downstate. “We could always access everything remotely, every purchase we signed online, and all of our selections were made,” said Jill. Their home took 13 months to complete. They received the wonderful gift in 2013 of moving in just three days before Christmas. “During the process, we came up every single weekend,” says Jill. They were able to plan everything down the minute details of where each outlet should be. Jill came up with a foolproof way to may sure that all her selections and color choices would be easy to follow and everyone would be on the same page, literally! She custom-made notebooks for each of the subs; any question they had could be answered in the book. “It was a lot of work, but they worked great,” said Jill. One of the most unique concepts in Jill and Dave’s home is perched in the kitchen, a custom-designed Boat Island. They had a lot of help with this project from Nowak Cabinets, who designed their kitchen and connected them with the skilled carpenters to build the vintage wooden Chris Craft-inspired boat! “We hadn’t yet devised it completely, and we

went to eat at Tuscan Bistro and saw their tables and that was it!” recalls Jill. The finished product is truly a magnificent piece of craftsmanship, just like the classic barrel boats themselves. “I really wanted a flag but she won’t let me,” Dave chirps in. Other unique elements that they incorporated are hand-made stained glass panels, and the integral woodwork walls and coiffured ceiling beams in the living room, all dreamt up by Dave in a rough diagram. “I love to dabble in woodwork, and I think the carpenter did such a great job to stick it to me; I still look at the joint work, and it’s absolutely perfect,” jokes Dave. Grand Alder wood is prevalent, gracing the home’s elegant doorways, eye-catching windows and striking staircases—and creating a beautiful, warm hue throughout. And the Arts and Crafts style of the home is enhanced exquisitely with classic Stickley furniture that Jill handpicked. Careful finishing touches have been lovingly added and include mementoes, collections, history and family heritage such as old English china, shadow-boxed sword relics, a Cornish Pasty framed tea towel. In Dave’s office is a wall of Eagle Scout photos and awards, along with about 50 miniature classic cars lining the shelves. This is a small prelude, as the collection morphs into dazzling life-size cars inside Dave’s pride and joy man cave garage, where four cherished beauties pose in all their glory. Along with the vintage cars in the garage are nods from the good old days, including a nostalgic black-and-white tiled bathroom, a project that Dave and his 80-plus-year-old dad worked on together. On the garage wall hangs a family heirloom, a photo of 58

Inside and out, the home reflects their desire to tie in nature’s glorious elements
Above the front door sits the unique Michigan State set in stone
Dave’s dad and brother after the war standing outside the Gulf Gas Station they owned outside of Detroit. This photo is Dave’s retro inspiration to decorate the interior to match, right down to the 1950s Coke machine and gas pump. The man cave is far from finished and also houses a gigantic working woodshop. A long list of Do-It-Yourself projects should keep Dave pretty busy once he finally retires and they make the move to live here full time. Inside and out, their home reflects their desire to tie in nature’s glorious elements, such as the stoic stone fireplace in the basement, a weathervane above the man cave, the clear glass railing on the deck that optimizes the glistening waters of Elk Lake staring back. “I feel like the house was dropped inside and feels natural” says Jill. And from the outside, the palatial mountains of rocks are beautifully placed, allowing the home’s two structures to blend effortlessly into the realm of its rugged woodland surroundings. It creates a peaceful haven where Jill and the Eagle Scout Dave truly feel their Up North serenity. It’s just a little bigger than their original travel trailer, with a few more creature comforts. 60
