Finding the Good

of love and friendship. So I took my adult kid, Zach and Teaghan to see the movie “Wonder.” (Zach wanted to see “Justice League,” but Teags was excited because her amazing 3rd-grade teacher, Mrs. VanStratt is reading “Wonder” the Book to the class). I have to admit, one thing it left me Wonder-ing, was, why the hell didn’t I pack some Kleenex! Just ten minutes in, I was a blubbering mess, Wonder-ing how I was going to make the whole movie. But something Wonder-ful happened the lead up to the big reveal of Auggie's disfigured face is long but when he finally popped off his space helmet, Teags whispered in my ear, “Mom, he’s not ugly, that’s not bad at all.” That made me cry too. As I looked over at Zach towards the end of the movie, he also was a blubbering mess! The kind and the loving message it leaves tugs at the heartstrings. It's so important at the beginning of the new year, when we all beat up ourselves so much, for everything we should, could or would be. We forget to remind ourselves and celebrate what we have accomplished in life so far, and all our good stuff. I read this once, "Life is too short to be at war with yourself every day." Amen to this! I am guilty but trying so hard as I inch closer to 50 next year, to find a balance.

few months ago, my dear friend and Baylife Style Editor, Kristy Kurjan, gave me a book to read, passed along to her by a friend, "Finding the Good" written by Heather Lende. It’s just a little book but with a big heart. Heather lives in the tiny town of Haines, Alaska and her day job is writing obituaries for the local newspaper. The book's stories are true narratives of her take on life. The book instantly resonated with me. The entire concept is that she refuses to write something bad about someone’s life, however they had lived. Everyone has something good to find. What stood out above all as Heather wrote, "If you want to have good friends, you have to be a good friend.” So as the holiday season started to approach, I dove in headfirst. I made a recommitment to my friends, planning couple date-nights, dinner parties, and girls-night-outs. Instead of texting, I called to catch up. I even tried to strive for more play dates and sleepovers for our nine-year-old daughter, Teaghan so that she could be a better friend too. My one and only resolution for the New Year is to be a better friend. With all this extra socializing, I do have to admit we went a little hog-wild on the Christmas spending-going a tad over budget- hello Costco! However, one expense we don’t regret is spontaneously heading downstate to add a Christmas puppy to our family. But with all this excess, I wanted to bring our family back down to earth with the meaning

WINTER 2018 | BAY LIFE NORTH

So this year lets be Finding the Good in everyone, but most of all ourselves. Be your best self, but not so much that you are at war with yourself. On that note, steal some quality time for yourself, a little me-time. On a cold and snowy day, take the time just to sit down, warm up with a hot beverage and enjoy this issue of Baylife North Magazine. As always we had a blast meeting people and bringing you their stories. If you can only catch a quick glance through the pages, grabbing a brief sit-down, in between practices or games because you're a ski-mom, hockey-mom, dance-mom, music-mom, or just a crazy-busy trying-to-do-everything kind-of- mom, I feel your pain, and I am right there with you. I did mention that we spontaneously added a new puppy into the mix, right? It’s worse than having a baby. He demands attention and poops, and pee's all over the house right now, and I have toys strewn all over the floor. I have bite marks on my hands, arms, and face because he's teething. No sleeping in ever again and my home office is a puppy playground as he is under, over, in and out of everything. But I am finding the good. We are in puppy love heaven, we adore him, he is so stinking cute, his name is Tucker, and he has rocked our world. And yes, puppy classes are in our very near future. Cheers to Finding the Good in 2018

WINTER 2018 | BAY LIFE NORTH

Meet Dean Adams

Owner Bay Area Contracting, Inc.; Owner BAC Design Group, Inc. Q. 2018 is going to be a big year for you, launching a custom state of the art design studio and office building to house your growing BAC team. What excites you the most about the project? A. The new building is enabling us to grow Bay Area Contracting and BAC Design group services while keeping our growing staff under the same roof. In anticipation of the new office being built, we have hired 14 new full-time employees in the past few months. Our expanded team will further our already existing specialty of the Design/Build concept and will allow us to keep a lot of services needed for that process in-house. Q. Are there any words of wisdom that you live by? A. Hard work pays off. Over the last ten years, we have built the BAC brand by working long hard hours, with little support staff. 2018 starts a new journey for me, and I find inspiration in these words: "The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things." -Ronald Reagan Q. Who is your hero? A. I grew up surrounded by two grandfathers who taught me a lot. Both of them instilled different skills that I still try to hold on to - mostly patience, passion, and commitment.

Q. If you could have one superpower what would it be, and why? A. Time Manipulation. If I had more hours in the day to get work done, perhaps my family time could be less interrupted. Q. What’s one thing that may surprise us about you? A. When I was a young child, I was enrolled in special ed, and my parents were told that I would likely not graduate high school. Q. You and your wife Tricia are both TC natives, high school sweethearts, prosperous and blessed with three adorable kiddos'. Where do you head for your favorite date night? A. We enjoy a scenic drive to a restaurant not near our house, to allow us to catch up with each other after a hectic week. We would then enjoy a leisurely meal overlooking a beautiful northern Michigan sunset. Blu and The Boathouse are our favorites for both their food and their atmosphere. Q. Did you make any New Year Resolutions? A. Not formally, but 2018 is the year of organization. Our BAC team has grown so much in the last few months, devising a plan to combine our talent into an even more seamless design/build process will be very important.

The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing – Walt Disney

New Year - New Store It’s a New Year when you tackle big goals and new opportunities head-on. For Dale and Teresa Campbell it means change, in the form of a new store. Located downtown for the past seven years, Urban Diversions is leaving their home off of South Union Street and expanding. Building a new store at the corner of Bunker Hill Road and US-31 in Acme Township they expect the new building will double their current size. With the additional space and their emergence into the Kitchen Design field partnered with Pennville Custom Cabinetry, 2018 is set to be an excellent year for Dale, Teresa, and Urban Diversions.

Greek Squad

Plato’s Pop Up Plato's Closet is no longer in the Kids Creek Plaza. Their lease was up at the end of the year, and with a big mandatory franchise makeover looming, owners Melissa and Mike Dow decided the East side of town, with the Costco boom, was a more prosperous location to invest in. Melissa told us “The updated look is more boutique and very upscale looking, we are excited. In the meantime we have a Pop-Up store right next to Sears, it's a huge open space with 10,000 sq. Feet. So we have tried to make it look full, but its so much stock to watch over. The white box build out for the new store is just a few doors down, and we can watch it emerge.” The most convenient perk is that they now have spacious parking. Which was a constant challenge at their old location. The Cherryland Mall, 1792 Garfield Ave. S. TC. 22

WINTER 2018 | BAY LIFE NORTH

As Plato’s moves in, Opa will be making plans to move out of The Cherryland Mall. They are taking their Greek columns, and Greek-inspired food and will be taking over the now-closed Fazoli’s building. They plan a remodel and spruce up, so they are hoping for an April opening. They are also hiring new staff in anticipation. Their current location will continue to be open.

GOOD EATS Off the Beaten Track! Foodie Gems you need to discover.

Glendale Ave. Total Takeover News Flash! The best breakfast sandwich ever can be found only once a month at The Little Fleet Pop Up Sunday Brunches at Glendale Ave. by Bray McCabe, with the help of his lovely wife, Brittney. The local “In the Know,” foodies have their schedules synched for these spectacular Sunday occurrences happening only on Jan 13, Feb 18, March 4 and April 8. This is killer wicked good eats at its best, grab it while you can. The behind the scenes story is just as meaty as the fillings between the heavenly home-made bread. Bray and Brittney are high school sweethearts from Saginaw. Since moving to Traverse City seven years ago, Bray has been a fixture at the famed Folgarelli’s deli counter getting schooled on 45 renowned sandwich concoctions. He’s for sure an official Master Sandwich Man. This admiration of fresh yummy food and documenting all of its deliciousness on Instagram led to followers and fans. Brittney and Bray also just happen to love The Little Fleet. They even hosted their wedding reception there. One thing led to another, a home-made recipe for bread that he perfected for over a year. A meaningful name, Glendale Ave. after the street where he grew up. Then he spent time refining his mouthwatering menu of lip-smacking, jaw-dropping, mindblowing sandwiches. FEELING

GOOD

Exercise is so difficult when you have to and so easy when you want to

The LUXBODY Buzz The latest fitness buzz is all about the LUXBODY studio, that sits above Seven Monks on Cass St. A friend I hadn’t seen in a while, looked terrific. She was rocking a smoking hot body and had recently finished a LUXBODY challenge. We had to get to the gluteus maximus of this LUX Craze. We were thrilled to learn it wasn't some fad franchise chain, but a grassroots concept. LUXBODY is built on pure sweat equity, passion, and purpose by a beautiful lady that dreamt up this idea. Meet Whitney Goulas. How long has LUXBODY been around? “I started the studio three years ago. It tickles me so much that it seems like we are finally hitting our stride. At first, it was just me; I taught every class. Now I have an amazing team of nationally certified trainers and awesome clients.” What is LUXBODY? "My belief is you don't need fancy schmancy. HIIT is HiIntensity and quick. Our slogan is a 30-minute workout is only 2% of your day! No excuses.” "It's a no-nonsense workout; you get in, you get your butt kicked, and get out. You don't have to feel the need to socialize. But we know by name, and we pamper you after with a peppermint infused towel." Tell us a little about you? “I am a new mom with a three-month-old little boy. I was born and raised in Saginaw and a gymnast from the age of 2. I went out to Southern California for College, became a professional in fitness, and I worked for a great club in San Francisco. Is this is where you came up with the concept? "The club supported me to try all different things; I worked with professional athletes who taught me a lot. It was also by the financial district, so my clients were A personalities. They wanted to get in and out, quick and effective with hi-intensity.” How did you get to be in TC? "I was ready to graduate from one on one but didn't plan to be here. My parents bought a house in Northport, and I came to visit, and it just clicked. I thought this is where I want to get my feet wet. I love that it is so community-based." How do we get a LUXBODY? “Sign up for a free class on our website and try it, all of our trainers are nationally certified, most used to be clients!” Luxbodyfitness.com 28

THE T-BAR

Terrific

T-BAR

O

n a snowy day after a few hours of skiing on the hill at Mt. Holiday the animated atmosphere inside the T-Bar is a welcoming abode that warms the soul. Quite literally if you’re frozen, warm up by the blazing fire, hang up your wet mittens and choose a hot toddy to bring you back up to room temperature. The T-Bar brings together generations of snow lovers, of all ages and sizes, layered up, or layered down, with rosy colored wind blasted cheeks. Helmets and gloves share tabletop space alongside half-full glasses and plates. The sound of bulky ski boots hammers the floor, and there may be a misplaced kid, or two? Searching for parents, who are all incognito, covered in woolly beanies. These toasty hats are an up north necessity, some are just hiding a wicked bad hair day, and at the T-Bar it's a rite of passage to rock this style. Snow style, family style date night, casual and chill is the way they roll.

The wholesome ambiance is enthralling. It is the only place in Traverse City that you can feel like you are in an old European ski lodge. If you're not a winter lover, and the thought of downhill skiing gives you palpitations of terrified anxiety, stay calm. Skiing, snowboarding or tubing are not requirements to partake in all the merriment. Full disclosure, you do have to trudge through the snowy parking lot to get there. But we promise it's worthwhile. Bring your family, bring friends if you don't have any just bring yourself. I guarantee

The T- Bar is tucked away into the hillside of Mt. Holiday’s neighborhood. The residents frequent the T-Bar all year round for libations and dinner. But in the winter it comes alive, buzzing with activity. Some families hunker down for entire weekends.

There are not many places you can send your kids outside while dad can enjoy a beer and the game, and it still counts as taking care of your kids! (Just don’t tell mom). Mt. The enhanced menu satisfies whatever you’re craving, with a variety of everything from decadent Truffle Fries, if you’re feeling a cheat day, to a classic Italian Caprese Salad on a healthy day.

Fun Fact to tell, while we were there, we bumped into Grand Traverse Pie owners Denise and Mike Busley, having a little early dinner date night. When Keil walked over with the plated entrée Pepper Grilled Filet Mignon with roasted garlic and mushroom sauce, ready for its close up, Mike looked over at and said. “I’m having that next time.”

Keil Mosier. It’s a natural fit, and almost like a second home to the Mosier family. They live in Mt. Holiday and their son, Iseley, is on the ski race team. They’ve spent many years eating and drinking at the T-Bar, so Keil knew firsthand what needed a tweak. His first order of business was to spice up the menu with a little more flavor and diversity. Keil Style. “People expect to have Pub Grub, and we do still have some, but there are a lot more choices, we even have made to order fresh guacamole,” says Keil.

Two things not to forget; Closed on Mondays.

The available entrée’s, shareables, flatbreads and everything in between will surprise and delight even the harshest critic. The reviews so far are all great, and Keil whipped up some of his favorites for our photo shoot. The perk is we were obligated to eat them. They were all delicious, (I counted it as a cheat day), but my favorite was the BBQ Chicken Flatbread.

It turns out they live in Mt. Holiday, and they eat there a lot too. If the T-Bar is an excellent place for the pie pioneers of Grand Traverse Pie fame, it's got to be good for you also. Give it a try we know you'll love it.

The calories in the drinks don’t count, or so they told me last time I was there.

ASK

ANGELA

BY ANGELA GOODALL

As we close 2017, we reflect on the latest trends for your home moving into 2018. I recently attended a Feng Shui and color seminar hosted by Pittsburgh Paints and our local distributor, Northwoods Paints to hear what the National and International design community had to say about color. A fascinating trend evolved for this year based on the emotional status of the world overall. I am a very big believer in how your personal environments make you feel but was very surprised to see the color of the year as Black Flame. Black has always been considered a very classic color and can make a huge statement in your design. The reason it has made a resurgence into design was based on our need for comfort and security. "Black creates the silence we crave in an information-heavy world, while the navy offers possibility and deep hopefulness." The color is certainly black, with an underlying blue tone. It will be fun to introduce this idea to a client or two and see how we use it in their design. A new design "style" is being coined and seems to fit a broad design palette for modest, soft spaces with a single color or texture to spruce things up. Transitional Chic blends soft white, pink or warm creams as the main color with rustic woods, soft fabrics and lace, heavy dark metal and just a touch of color or crystal for some bling. It is somewhere between shabby chic, vintage cottage, and 50

rustic design. Just a simple blend of all three. For Metals, "not your mother's gold" is still taking the forefront. You will hear the plumbing and hardware manufacturers calling it Rose Gold, Luxe Gold or Moderne Brushed Gold. All have a very distinct gold tone with either a pink or burnished hue to them. Lastly, my favorite trend, out with hard, squared edges and lines. Bring in organic flowing shapes. Patterns that represent nature and fluidity in our beings. So pick a room to renovate or redecorate for 2018! Layer the materials softly without forgetting to add the spark of color or metal for interest.

Lake Legacy PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREW ZECCHINI 52

WINTER 2018 | BAY LIFE NORTH

Meet the homeowners David and Cheryl Morely

T

he rich ancestry of the cottages that contour the shoreline of Glen Lake is mind-boggling. Handed down from generations to generations of fortunate families. Apparently, I was born into the wrong family. Today the value of this coveted land is almost unimaginable, and only available for sale, rarely ever, to the very wealthy. It’s refreshing to find out the beginnings of this multi-million-dollar vacation spot was much humbler, starting all the way back in 1848, as a trading post for fur goods. In the modern day, the stunning lake house owned by David and Cheryl Morley is a dream gazers delight, it too handed down in the family. However, the early stages of the parcel of land it resides on uncovers a historical, fascinating fact no else’s can claim. The first lady of the house, Mrs. Fisher, bestowed the name on the town of Glen Arbor. This discovery's proof is in the pudding with the original 1865 deeded document framed on the wall of their home from the U.S. Government to Mr. John E. Fisher. The date coincidently concurs with the end of the Civil War. David has a strong theory it was paid as a substitution for Civil War wages. History in the making, who would think a treasured family lake house could hold such an important past. Giving birth to the name of the beloved town, and chronicling life after the Civil War. The little town of Glen Arbor grew, and by the 1900s, a few waterfront resorts had opened, visitors arrived by the boatloads, steamboats to be exact. All chock-full of Chicagoan families floating into to the Glen Haven Pier, heading to Northern Michigan paradise. And so began the Summer Romance of many lifetimes. They all fell in love with Glen Lake. Chicagoan’s David and Cheryl have those blessed genes, following in the customary family footsteps of magical Glen Lake Summers. “I grew up going there, for as long as I can remember,” recalls David. David and Cheryl shared with us the short version of their life story. Both grew up in Chicago; they met at work which took them both to St Louis. After twenty-three years raising their son and daughter there, they retired early.

As youthful retirees, they are eagerly awaiting to have what they are calling, Grand Adventures with their future grandchildren, which may be a long wait. Their daughter, just recently married, lives in Rochester, MN, and is in her second residency year at the Mayo Clinic. Their son works in financial banking in St. Louis, is single and spends much time in New

York. So, instead, their first "Grand Adventure" was to build two dream houses; one on Kiawah Island in South Carolina where they spend their winters, and the other on enchanting Glen Lake. The first order of business was to start from scratch. “The first cottage was pretty basic, with no insulation, in 1965 my dad remodeled and winterized,” says David. The needs and wants was a pretty simple list of requirements.

“The new house had to feel like a lake home, we wanted lots of light, and all of the bedrooms had to have a lake view. We are both used to large families and there had to be plenty of space.” said Cheryl. They enlisted skilled professionals to help them on their quest. Steve Warner of Shoreline Architects in Petoskey, Roger Widing of Widing Custom Homes and Lynn Meagher Pettyjohn's Lynnteriors. “They were all wonderful to work with.” says David. “Lynn knew exactly the feel we wanted, with durable fabrics that feel comfortable. We really live in the house, and we have a dog,” laughs Cheryl.

You never know how many friends you have until you own a lake home. So there is no shortage of space, the Morley home can sleep up to sixteen comfortably. Who knows how many uncomfortably? In planning to make each guest relaxed and happy, the most pleasurable bedroom to prepare was the Bunkroom, with excited anticipation this has been ceremoniously appointed the name, The Hope Room. David and Cheryl hope to fill each bed bunk with angelic sleeping grandchildren. Tuckered out, after those “Grand Adventures” grandma Cheryl and Granddad David have planned no doubt. With that many overnight guests the daytime living spaces were just as significant, they plotted out two separate areas, one being the dedicated family area. The second space was devised from experience, realizing, after spending a few summers in rented homes, that the main T.V. always became a Teen Takeover area monopolizing the screen with Xbox and PlayStation games. With that in mind, they specifically designed a
