ith this issue, we are officially Perfect— we have a Spine! Just kidding. These are “printer lingo terms” for our bigger, thicker magazine known as Perfect Bound with a Spine. (Laymen: The edge is now bound, not stapled together like before.) Coming from a 27year background publishing a lifestyle magazine in Maryland, we are overjoyed that we have reached this milestone goal in just 10 issues. It is because of you, our wonderful readers, and the tremendous support of our advertisers who continue to allow us to grow and bring this magazine to our community for free! Please, readers, always shop local to keep our businesses busy and successful. (And tell them we told you to!) We also totally shook things up with the cover. It was a decision that was made after much angst and deliberation. We didn’t want you thinking that we had changed and become “Just a Home Magazine,” as our passion and vision is to always celebrate our surroundings with stupendous outdoor photography and our Bay Lifestyle. (The feedback we always get about past covers is amazing.) We sifted through the many opinions of trusted cohorts and friends, and they correctly guided us to the fact that living on the water is also the very epitome of the Northern Michigan BayLife, and truly what we all dream about with starry eyes. So George and Lauri, you are our inspiration! And we Thank You wholeheartedly for allowing all of us to ooh and aah inside your beautiful home. I won’t go into every facet of the features and articles. I’ll leave those for you to unearth on your own, but I do have a story to share. Armed with a personal list from the radio man himself, Ron Jolly (and his wife Laurie’s) Favorite Finds, and taking advantage of the fact our five-year-old was on her first sleepover at Aunt Connie’s—woo hoo!—my husband Tom, a Michigan native who sweet-talked me into moving here, and I spent the perfect weekend exploring and discovering nooks and crannies. These are hidden gems that we have not been privy to in the three years we have been blessed to call this home. Now, you may think we are doing you locals a disservice, and may disagree that we shared these hush-hush places in a big, glossy color feature that spills the sacred secrets. (Oh my, well yes, we kinda did?) But in our defense, first of all, we sure don’t know all of them, so don’t get your knickers in a twist (Old English saying). We probably never could know all of the secret places—there are so many of them. But we also didn’t draw a map or print specific information (we didn’t leave a trail of breadcrumbs either), so no one will GPS or plot the spot without working hard to find them. If the next time you show up there and it’s busy, I just have to say, “Oops, we did it again. People really do read our little magazine! Yaay!“ Go out and explore the BayLife, as every Summer has a Story.

Talk of The Town Did you know in the late 1800s 6th Street used to be called Stocking Row because of the caliber of beautiful homes, and their owners who wore silk stockings? Intrigued to learn more? Emmy Winner Amongst Us Another book has made quite the stir, written by Jane Fortune who is the co-owner of Bella Fortuna North restaurant in Lake Leelanau. Jane’s book, Invisible Women: Forgotten Artists of Florence was made into a PBS documentary and just won a coveted “Emmy Award” in the Historical and Cultural Program category. Lucky Jane lives in Leland and also Florence, Italy, where she was inspired to chronicle the works of early women artists who had no rights. Now their art, hundreds of years later, can be seen on the walls of the Florence Museum and a few others. Takes Two to Tango When you mix a little Spanish and a little English, you get Spanglish! (Secret Recipe to try at home. Melanzana is Italian for Eggplant) Serves 6
1 Eggplant sliced thin Flour 4 Eggs (beaten) Vegetable Oil Filling 1lb Ricotta Cheese 2 Egg Yolks 1/2 Cup Parmesan Cheese Chopped parsley Tablespoon of Garlic Salt and Pepper
Pomodoro Sauce 1 tbsp. Chopped Garlic Pinch of Red Crushed Peppers 2 cups Italian Plum Tomatoes Fresh Basil and Salt & Pepper to taste
Topping 1/2 cup of Mozzarella Cheese 1/2 Cup of Shredded Parmesan Cheese Fresh Chopped Parsley

What You'll Need Large Sauté Pan and Baking Dish
Directions 1. Coat eggplant with flour then egg, and repeat again with flour to bread eggplant. 2. Place in hot oil in sauté pan, and cook both sides until golden brown, let cool. 3. Mix up all the ingredients for the filling in a bowl. 4. Place 2 spoonful’s of the filling mixture on corner of breaded eggplant “wrap and roll” into Rollatini’s. Sauce 1. Heat oil in sauté pan, add garlic and crushed red peppers. 2. Cook until garlic starts to brown, add tomatoes and basil. 3. Cook until the sauce thickens and all the water is cooked out. 4. Spoon 1/2 the sauce on the bottom of baking dish. 5. Place rollatini’s in dish. Cover with remaining sauce, top with mozzarella cheese, bake in oven at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Sprinkle on parmesan cheese and fresh topped parsley. Delizioso!

Upon seating and settling in before starting to ponder on the menu, you are greeted with a chef’s little bite, an appetizing token of richly prepared food in just one bite on an inviting simple white spoon. Welcome to delicious! Drinks Anyone? To begin, a beverage of course! The wine menu is not overwhelming but has a superior selection that includes a dedicated section of the best of local vineyards. A definite highlight and must try is a sampling or two, from their enticing martini menu, yummy choices veer from the classic Cosmopolitan to a Michigan Apple or a Mandarin Sunrise and then some.
The menu is a beautiful balance of mouthwatering entrées of meat and seafood, dishes such as Pan Seared Duck, Grouper and of course a succulent Beef Tenderloin Filet. There is a splendid variety of delectable appetizers like a Tuna Tempura with Asparagus, Crab Cake and Crispy Shitakes with deliciously different salads to tempt your palate like a Blueberry Basil Caprice salad, with a goat cheese twist. The goal is to create bold flavors that surprise with an international flare, keeping in tune with the area being recognized nationally as a foodie destination. It changes three or four times a year, and they proudly make the statement on the menu that they work with local farmers in Leelanau, Grand Traverse and Benzie Counties using the freshest ingredients. Also noted on the menu are labels for gluten free, vegetarian and vegan, if you have special preferences food can also be cooked to order. Don’t pass on the scrumptious bread it’s a real highlight, not to be missed, it is made in house daily with no preservatives, and is served with local favorite Fustini’s oils and vinegars, they rotate the flavors, and carry a plethora of bottles stored on shelves that greet you upon entry. The service is impeccable, and an experienced staff enhance your whole dining experience, whether you’re in town for vacation, or call this home, they are extremely knowledgeable on the menu including the chefs stregnths and preferences, and are very well versed on the area for visitors, For example the deepest point of the bays are 630 feet! Who knew? They make you feel like you are their only guests, never rushed or settling for nothing short of perfection from beginning to end. The courses come at your leisure, so plan on an intimate lingering dinner where you and your better half can reacquaint with one another, (which also means plan on a longer evening for the babysitter, it’s worth it! Trust me!).

Of course with the whole bay at your whim out the window, the best laid plans should also include a crowning sunset with dinner, and this is the place to experience it. A whole 3 minutes and 12 seconds is exactly what it takes once the sun has hit the horizon, or so said our waiter Michael, he sees it every evening from that very spot, so who am I to doubt him. So, you’ve gone to the Big City, indulged in the perfect dinner, watched the perfect sunset, all with your perfect date, the best part is home is just a few minutes away! But some spots are off the beaten track, so we asked for a little help from our friends (a few local residents you may have heard of) with our fun task of uncovering these secrets. “Who are you? Are you a reporter?” I laughed. I wish. I’m the Inland Seas Communications and Marketing Intern.
“Is a canoe a boat?” Fatima innocently asked. A sixth grader from Ann Arbor, she was more familiar with the camera slung around my neck than the lake — Lake Michigan — we were approaching.
“I've never been on a boat before,” Fatima chattered away, “unless you count a canoe. I went on a canoe for the first time this morning.” Her eyes didn’t leave the jeweled tones of the surrounding bay. I couldn’t help thinking how far apart our two worlds were. My childhood was spent on a boat. It was catching minnows in Charlevoix and drinking my fair share of lake water. The confined space of the boat corralled my family together until someone had the good sense to jump in the water. From my family’s boat I would often watch the majestic sails and masts of Inland Seas moving, almost imperceptibly, across the horizon of West Bay. As I grew, that faint outline drew nearer, until I ended up literally standing on the breezy deck. This was also my first time sailing with this venerable Northern Michigan institution. “There’s a lot of water out there,” I commented in a half-joking aside to Fatima. “Trust me.” She shook her head vigorously. We weren’t in Kansas anymore.

Fatima’s classmates followed me out to the pier, running, pointing, exclaiming loudly as we marched from the Inland Seas Education Center down towards the schooner, Inland Seas. “Whoa! Look at that ship!” “Are we going on that thing?!” “Is that a pirate ship?” Excited and amazed voices clamored for details. This was the first time many of them had been on a boat, let alone a 77-foot, gaff-rigged schooner. The hum of inquisitive children filled the snappy Suttons Bay breeze. Standing next to the swaying schooner, I almost expected the air to smell salty. Watching over the kids’ antics, trained and experienced volunteer educators stood ready. These were the faces of parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents. They were dedicated not just to the science, but to the simple things—the wonderment on the kids’ faces when they inspected zooplankton under a microscope for 48

the first time, teaching them the word “benthos” and watching them savor feeling that quiet word under their breath, just like they savored feeling its namesake in their hands, that foreign and dark sediment from 60 feet under. It was the beaming grins bounding off the gangplank after a great sail that had them coming back to teach year after year. These were faces of our sentinels, content in a job well done. A job? No, a duty. The crowd became quiet. Shivering hands clasped handmade logbooks and pencils, ready to collect data. We piled onto the vessel. The kids were tentative, their feet cautiously probing for solid ground on the gently swaying deck. There were no sea legs here. “Scientists and Sailors,” that’s what they were, Fred, the lead instructor, had told them. The data they collected today would be sent up the chain of command to actual scientific analysis of the Great Lakes. With a sharp blast from the air horn, we were off; we set sail and left the mainland behind.

The dock fell away to a nippy breeze and a misty sting. We sailed away from who we were on land. Aboard the vessel, we all donned different personas. The students— they weren’t kids anymore, they were scientists and sailors. The volunteers were no longer physicists, attorneys, doctors, social workers and grandparents; they were chemistry and ecology teachers, they were the ship’s crew, and so were we. The amazed kids stared at the effervescent water glimmering deeply under the sharp ship’s bow. We were flying. Caught up in the breeze, I snapped back to the everpatient Fred, explaining the “Deadliest Catch” — worthy contraption the crew was tossing overboard. An Otter Trawl, he called it. More unwieldy than its namesake, the trawl required a special license to catch a wide range of fish samples to be analyzed by the burgeoning scientists. As we hauled up the Otter Trawl and burnished deep-water fish thrashed in the pungent nets, half the kids leaned eagerly forward and the other half leaned
cautiously back. A brave, bespectacled classmate agreed to measure bottom temperature. With finality, she sent a lonely metal “messenger” to the bay’s murky depths to greet a sinking Van Dorn Bottle, thus triggering the contraption to snatch a sample of icy hypolimnion (water from lake bottom). To collect sediment samples, we used the PONAR Dredge; this resembles a child’s toy excavator gone wrong in the hands of University of Michigan students (true story). We let the rough, wet, fibrous rope fly across our open palms to excavate gelatinous muck hidden below the cobalt waves.

The oddly sonorous clang of the ship’s bell signaled the kids to divide into groups, each group tasked with testing a different aspect of Great Lakes ecology. Excited talk of fish population, pH (acidity and alkalinity of the water), stewardship, the sudden flurry of dichotomous keys, test tubes, and sodium thiosulfate signaled more science was about to be unleashed. I sat on the deck’s zenith, the students

milling to one side, industriously organizing themselves while silvered volunteers watched, bemused. As I sat, literally, on the cusp of adulthood, I marveled at three generations around me. We had a little sister, an aunt, a new father and a grandfather on board, all focused on the lake we call our own. Fittingly, the schooner, Inland Seas, is only a metaphor for our larger purpose, to “protect the Great Lakes through education.” Our education is not one of dry semantics, but an education firmly rooted in experience. The buffeting wind off the lake, the peppery scent of the boat shop, these bring families and communities together. We connect the complex web of 50

a community, an ecosystem, a microcosm of the north with our common passion and goal. Why do we love this place? The jeweled sunsets, doubly reflected in still waters. Misty mornings and dewy fields. Leaf piles and fresh peaches. The microclimate of the Bays makes Northern Michigan the experience, the community, the way of life. We sailed back to port, the kids exhilarated and a little tired. They bounded off the schooner, confident in their steps, reliving the experience in reverent whispers, but I lagged behind, keeping an eye on the volunteers’ knowing looks. As I stepped back onto the gangplank, I felt a pull on my sleeve and turned around. “Thanks.” Fatima whispered. She gave me a cockeyed grin and ran toward the bus, her logbook carefully zipped into a pocket close to her heart.

• 1 large English cucumber peeled, seeded, and thinly sliced, plus more slices for garnish • 1.5 cups 100 percent agave silver tequila • 1 cup freshly squeezed lime juice • 1 cup Lime Simple Syrup • 1 lime wedge • Coarse salt Directions Place cucumber, tequila, lime juice, and simple syrup in the jar of a blender; blend until smooth. Strain through a fine mesh sieve into a pitcher. Refrigerate for 1 hour. Moisten the rims of three martini glasses with lime wedge. Dip rims of glasses in salt to coat. Fill a cocktail shaker 3/4 full with ice. Add 1.5 cups cucumber mixture. Cover and shake 10 to 15 seconds. Strain into prepared glasses. Garnish with cucumber slices. Enjoy!

Bringing the Outdoors In Winter seems so far away. Summer warms our soul and is one of the reasons I believe we so often use the colors of our beautiful Northern Michigan natural surrounding into each of our designs. In our region there are so many color palettes to choose from. The ones that tend to stand out the most are the blues, grays and whites of the water and sky. A clean design that sparkles is considered a new trend, but incorporating a shade of blue into homes with a water view has been a goal of mine as a designer since the day I started. The clouds enter the picture with the most popular shade of countertops being white with gray marbling. The maintenance concern that comes with marble countertops has been resolved by the quartz manufacturers. They have developed a stain resistant product that has the beauty of real marble with the durability of granite.
Another popular design choice that incorporates our beautiful surroundings is to utilize shades of wood, green and rust tones that remind us of the woods, fields and trees. This technique may still have some painted features, but it tends to incorporate colors of Buttercream or Green. Stone is still a prevalent feature, but may be incorporated into different facets of the design other than countertops. A favorite new product of mine is thin sliced stone that is sold in stacked “sheets” and can be installed by a tile setter. It is lighter than normal stone, so it gives us the opportunity to apply it to different surfaces without the weight associated with thicker versions of the same material. So, enjoy all of the beauty that summer in Northern Michigan has to offer and keep it in mind when redesigning a room in your home. Use some of your favorite pieces as inspiration to bring the outdoors in.

George and Lauri Varga met when they were both working for the Homestead. “It was like a gift from God. It’s a great place to fall in love,” George says. Originally from Ohio, he was living in Boston at the time and commuting to the Homestead. Lauri is from Midland and always summered here as a kid. She was living in a house on Crystal Lake and had just become the PR and Marketing Director. In adjacent offices, they shared a wall; this was the beautiful beginning of sharing many walls in many happy homes. A romantic courtship ensued where George racked up many sky miles flying to and from Boston, with each visit staying a little longer!

The two married, moved to Dallas and then
Connecticut, but they summered here for years and longed for the area year-round. Thus began their love affair with wanting to call Northern Michigan home and build their little slice of heaven by the water. As George says, “Because we met here it was special to us.� One summer was spent totally dedicated to finding the perfect spot. Success came when they realized the impressive lot they had found and adored was on the water just five doors down from a home they had rented one summer. (Had to be fate?)

But the journey to their perfect home had a roadblock: The lot already had a contract on it. As luck would have it, though, that couple also liked a lot on Torch Lake and were having trouble making up their minds. The wife’s choice prevailed. She picked Torch Lake, and George and Lauri got their perfect lot! George and Lauri knew they wanted sunsets and a home close to town. The lot offers 150 feet of bay frontage, so the location was a no-brainer. But when it came to actually building their summer home, they had a longer list of must-haves. They turned to Mike Collings of Mac Custom Homes, who enthusiastically helped to create it all.

The house was built in phases. Phase one was developed
while George was still working and planning to retire in 2004. At this point, the house was completely sustainable but accommodated future plans to double its size. George and Lauri just felt that at the time they didn’t have the energy to dedicate toward building such a large house, and they wanted fun summers spent here instead.

So after many summers in phase one, phase two was executed. George and Lauri were now armed with the time to commit to meticulous detail and rethink those must-haves for a lifetime of summers. The much-pondered list included a stepped-down dining area so the view wouldn’t be blocked from the entrance and living area. There had to be a continual Bay Breeze throughout the house, as they rarely like to use air conditioning. And light—this one was a biggie. The lighting in this house is more elaborate than the attention to detail paid in most people’s entire homes! George and Lauri enlisted the help of a professional who actually won an award for the impressive lighting in their Connecticut home. He has a degree in theatrical lighting and is working on an apartment in Trump Tower right now! They sent him the plans, and he sent back six pages of specifications in projected lighting for the entire house. The last configured detail they had to have was a relaxed look with an Eastern Coastal feel; each room would flow and create a casual yet refined elegance.

The colors were all chosen and influenced by Lauri. She is also a very talented portrait artist, so using her natural eye for color certainly wasn’t a challenge. “I didn’t want a Sensual Overload,” she says. "I wanted it very subtle.” The kitchen, of course, is always the most important hub in the house, and this one is no exception. It is striking. It was redesigned in phase two with the help of Sara Busby Design. “She gave me the idea to make the pantry much larger, using space from the old guest room, and with the leftover I got to have an office!” says Lauri. It is a huge pantry, and even contains a second oven and a fridge! “She also
designed to have my sink right by the window with a view, which used to be a sliding door.” Lauri’s favorite feature in the kitchen is the backsplash tile, and it is truly stunning in metallic silver tile. She embraced the challenge to decorate locally, and on the tour of the house you can see detail elements, furniture and accessories from many area stores and galleries. George and Lauri recall fun highlights of their “house” story, especially the process of coming up with ideas for redesigning room to room. Mike from Mac would be inspired to literally sketch and configures ideas right there on the actual wall. I think that solidifies him as the original caveman builder!

is astounding, and most definitely the biggest wow factor aside from the palatial view, of course. You can understand why this home has taken literally years to come to fruition. Crown molding is in every room. The floors even have a story. In the grandkids bunkroom, Lauri did the floor and even has the kids initials carved in it. The floor in their master bedroom is exquisite lake-recovered elm wood. The floor in the bike room is unique painted cement, complete with a custom sink counter made from bowling alley floor recovered and bought at Odom’s. In the basement hides a sommeliers dream wine cellar, chilled to perfection. The fireplace was inspired by a trip to the H Hotel. Lauri also draws and dreams up many of the custom-designed furniture in the house, including her desk, the windows and the dining room table. Oh, and did we mention there is an elevator? Reason being, the original layout had the master suite on the ground floor, but once phase two kicked in they fell in love with the balcony off what was to be Lauri’s studio. Realizing this is a retirement home, they knew that spectacular curved staircase might prove a little difficult as the years wear on the knees!

Lauri is pretty passionate
about the bunkroom and to enter is to be transported aboard a sailboat (aye aye, Captain) complete with nautical accents, cleat drawer handles, four divine custom-built bunks and even ship stairs to descend. (Grandkids Logan, 11, Teagan, 6, and Stephen, 3, fill this room in the summer.) George’s passion is the fact that they were blessed to work with really great people, and he loved the concept of having to problem solve along the way. The house is still not quite finished, and one of George’s goals is to have the whole thing wired to his iPhone. There’s no TV in the 6 foot by 8 foot custom-built hidden cabinet in the living room. But hey, who needs a TV when you’re living in a paradise by the water?

Cherry Bowl Drive-In Theatre Opened in 1953 “The Fabulous Fifties,� The Cherry Bowl Drive-in Theatre in Honor is celebrating its 60th anniversary this summer. The screen tower was widened in the late 1950's to accept the "New" phenomenon, "Cinemascope," a larger aspect ratio than was previously available. Look closely during the "Vintage" cartoons to see the size of movies before cinemascope. The sound system consists of the original vacuum tube motiograph amplifiers that still power the speakers at the speaker posts. They always play a double feature, never R rated, the Popcorn is even topped with real creamery butter and made in the Original 1953 Popper. On the Edge of Sun and Rain The slow, warm tranquility of this summer day was set against a wall of ominous thunderheads to the northwest. Like timid antelope in the great plains of Africa, we splashed, swam, and sailed in the full glory of the summer sun, all the while keeping a keen eye on the foreboding presence on the edge of our periphery. As the daylight dwindled, we were given a gift of magnificent light, as the threat of rain passed north of Grand Traverse Bay. Sitting on the rock-strewn shore, reflecting on a day living the Bay Life, we sat huddled and watched the waves crash until darkness stole the light. 80
