Taking time to LIVE your LIFE will only INSPIRE your WORK.

ell, I sure hope you got to enjoy your Summer this year, as wacky as it was with the scorching 90 degree temperatures that plummeted to cool 70s with no 80s in sight for weeks. As much as I complained (a lot!), we still managed to squeeze in bonfires with friends, anchoring our boat at Power Island with a few overnights to boot, sand between our toes, barbecues, picnics, gazing at the stars, collecting rocks and everything in between. All of this fun included hanging with locally born and bred celebrity Carter Oosterhouse and his actress wife Amy Smart as they erected a new Carter’s Kids Playground in Petoskey! (See picture.) Now I’m ready for back to school, structure and schedule: Bring on Fall. Moms, are you with me or what?

It’s kind of like pulling teeth, planning a fall issue. It seems almost impossible while everyone is trying to savor and soak up those last few weeks of Summer, but I think we pulled it off OK! I have no doubt you will be awe-inspired by the spectacular photography of John McCormick, who literally goes by the name Michigan Nut! The landscapes and terrain along with incredible sunsets and the wonders of our Michigan surroundings are just magically portrayed in his shots. From his gallery of 30 years of work, it was quite the challenge to choose just a few images. We always hear feedback from our readers that one thing they adore is the stunning photography, and we didn’t want to disappoint!

Editor's Note: In the July/Aug issue "Living the Dream" George & Lauri Varga omitted to Thank a few people who also helped in the designing of their stunning home. They are: Rita Whaley of Design 2, Marty Rhein of BAC Design Group and Paul Maurer.

Walking in Family Footsteps was fun, too. We wanted to celebrate family businesses that are a founding part of this awesome community we all call home. You will recognize the names, but since most of the businesses are just a part of our daily BayLIfe, we thought it would be unique to put faces to the now-legacy businesses, some of whom are in their third, fourth and even sixth generation! Talk about family pressure! There are many more great family businesses than we were able to coordinate for pictures, and we would love your input in future issues to spotlight those you would like to see. Along the way, we got to meet all of these wonderful families, too. They were all very gracious and accommodating, so a Big Thank You to them for making a little family reunion possible just for us!

september/october 2013 | BAY LIFE NORTH

Speaking of a reunion, you may get a little déjà vu with the home feature. The family may look a tad familiar (not to mention they’re one of the most gorgeous families ever). We are revisiting “The house that Brian Built” from the May/ June issue, as he technically hadn’t finished building it yet! (Small detail that didn’t stop us from featuring it then, deadlines and all!) But after a whirlwind Parade of Homes starring role, the house is finished, the Mohr family is all moved in, and we invited ourselves over! I guarantee you will want to put a brick oven in your kitchen after you read this story! Oh yeah, “kitchen” is a great lead-in as we haven’t talked food yet. And how can you have a lifestyle magazine with no food? No worries. Date Night introduces you to new kid on the block Steakhouse Copper Falls. Just the sizzling steak in the picture should have you sold enough to put it on the Must Try List! Aren’t you happy that Bikini season is over, and great comfort food is back in. Lobster mac and cheese sounds good, and they have that too! So as we Fall Back into cooler temps, longer nights, cozy fires and early bedtimes again (Yaay!), sit down and enjoy this issue of BayLife Cover to glorious Cover.

Ready, Set, Play‌ Carter Oosterhouse and his actress wife Amy Smart were in Petoskey Aug 24th to help construct a playground with his Carters Kids Foundation. This one was a little more close to his heart, as his childhood best friend Greg Summers lives in Petoskey, and his kids go to The St. Francis Xavier School. Fundraising had been in full swing for a new and improved playground for a few years but with Carters Kids partnering, it became a reality!

Show me someone who never gossips and I'll show you someone who isn't interested in people. Barbara Walters

Life’s a Bowl of Cherries Its Cherries Jubilee time at Cherry Capital Cadillac and Subaru! There’s much to celebrate for Otto Belovich and his Cherry Crew on Garfield Ave. They have a brand new shiny Cadillac Showroom built next door which was previously the old Blue Shield property. “It’s exciting that we are growing, and are adding more people. The facilities needed updating, and once we finished the Subaru showroom, it was a natural fit.” Otto told us. Not too bad for a young soldier who moved here from Germany to live the American Dream. His last tour of duty had been in Empire where he fell in love with the area. (And a beautiful girl of course). Otto started as a car salesman in 1965, and worked his way up the good old fashioned way. He’s owned the dealership for 19 years, and also, in his words owned Traverse Motors “forever.” We just have one word for all of his success and being the great guy that he is. Otto-Riffic!

Get to know Lowe What don’t you know about Kristen Lowe, the lovely new evening anchor at 7&4 and 29&8? Well, the first thing she did when she got to Traverse City was Stand up Paddle Board on the bay, with her two younger teenage sisters, who both relayed in awe “Wow, you are so lucky you get to live here!” Kristen a downstate Farmington Hills native attended Michigan State, graduating with bachelors in Communication and a masters in Journalism, and also in college played Club Volleyball. She’s been in front of TV audiences in West Texas for the last few years, in the land of Friday Night Lights. She is already getting along with her on screen family, both Marks famously (co-anchor Mark Schollett and weatherman Mark Watkins) and with her bright beautiful smile she’ll be lighting up our nights on the local news hopefully for a long time! Welcome to Northern Michigan Kristen. 14

Love and cook with Wild Abandon!

In Perfect Harmony 9 Bean Rows has been open officially in their new location in Suttons Bay since July. And now that the hustle and bustle of summer is over, be sure to visit. The old historic Firehouse has been transformed from its old, darker days! Gone is the dark red celling and the hunter green wallpaper. In its place are bright walls and rustic floors, as well as a harmonious partnership of three very different owners! With the ambiance of a little café somewhere in Europe oozing old world charm, you’ll be mesmerized by the smell of freshly made croissants in the morning and heavenly bread made of course by The Baker Jen Welty. For lunch and dinner, The Chef Paul Carlson is whipping up culinary delights in the kitchen, using of course fresh farm goodies grown by The Farmer Nic Welty. On a fabulous fall Sunday, make sure to include their Sunday Brunch on your agenda, too. We hear its DELCIOUS!

Chef Giorgio Lo Greco and his wife Monica.

Pepe Nero Sicilian native Chef Giorgio Lo Greco and his wife Monica are the proud owners of Pepe Nero, a new cozy authentic Mediterranean restaurant that recently opened in the Villages at the Grand Traverse Commons. Giorgio has been cooking since the age of seven and learned in some of the best culinary kitchens in the world. Yep, his grandmother’s in Italy and then his uncle’s kitchen in a famed and beloved restaurant in Sicily. Since coming to America in 1996, Giorgio has worked in L.A. and also the affluent kitchens of the Princess Cruise Lines. But he always dreamed of opening his own restaurant! The décor is a super cool and retro Italian, with black and white vintage prints from famous old movies and, of course, photos of Vespas and Fiats! And the food is amazing. Authentic and Mediterranean inspired, the essentially peasant homemade dishes burst with flavor and have been passed down by generations of families. It’s all cooked fresh from scratch and made to order! Be warned: With food like this that tastes so good, just like at home, I guarantee you’ll lick the plate! 800 Cottage View Drive, TC • 231.929.1960

For the Brine 1 gal water ¾ cup kosher salt ½ cup brown sugar 4 bay leaves 1 tbsp whole peppercorns Method In a large stockpot bring all ingredients to a boil until salt and sugar have dissolved. Let cool down completely before adding the whole chicken. Let sit covered in refrigerator 8-24 hours. Roasted Vegetables Local vegetables are best, use what is available. We used baby carrots, whole garlic cloves, parsnips, brussels sprouts, shallots cut in half, fingerling potatoes. Wash root vegetables and potatoes and toss all with olive oil, fresh rosemary, salt and a little pepper. Roast in a preheated 450 degree oven for 35-40 minutes (stirring every 10 minutes) until caramelized but not overcooked. Roasted Chicken Remove chicken from brine and rinse under cold water then pat dry with paper towel. Truss the chicken by tucking the wings under breasts and tying the legs together with a piece of butchers twine. Sprinkle bird with herbs, place chicken on a roasting pan and cook for 45-60 minutes in preheated oven at 350 degrees until internal thigh temperature is 165 degrees. Let chicken rest for 10 minutes before serving

The Soup Cup You’ve no doubt heard of a microbrewery, but how about a MicroSouperie? We’re talking custom batches of Soups here—eight, to be exact— that are made from scratch every single day. They’re all Super Souptastic and yours for the sampling because free tastings are offered daily! All of this adds up to more than 40 different soups a week. In fact, since opening, owners Rita and Scott Nitsche have made more than 700 soups. “We never get bored,” Rita says. “We are reinventing our menu every day!” After years of being in the restaurant business in Big Cities and never seeing each other, the Elk Rapids couple opened The Soup Cup: A MicroSouperie. It was a pipe dream on their Bucket list that came to fruition just last year in the Traverse City Old Train Depot Station, right behind the library. Ingredients are as local and as fresh as they can get; Rita and Scott stop by farmers markets on their way to work. They also offer Vegan, Lactose-Free and Gluten-Free choices! And here’s the Wicked Good part! Along with the most delicious and yummy comfort food soups, Rita and Scott serve Ooey Gooey Grilled Cheese Sandwiches on big, fat Texas Toast, accompanied by Belgian Fries and your choice of more than 20 different and decadent dipping sauces! Darric Newman is the wine aficionado and co-owner of Folgarelli's Market and Wine Shop

The Mighty Pinot Noir I know many have said that red wines are tough to grow in Northern Michigan. For the most part, I would agree. With that said, our region offers a number of great reds, one being Pinot Noir. With its origins in Burgundy, France, this grape is grown around the world and varies in style and character. In its classical style, it is a lighter-bodied red that is almost translucent. You also find this wine produced in a fullbodied, almost inky style. The great thing about this varietal is that in its traditional style, the wine holds great flavor and unbelievable aromas, making it food friendly and a palate pleaser for almost all red wine drinkers. One of my favorite locally produced Pinot Noirs is the Bowers Harbor Vineyard Wind Whistle. This wine comes from a block of vineyards in the sandy soil of Leelanau County. These vineyards produce a more traditional style Pinot Noir with lighter body, hints of cherry on the nose and rich character. He’s been in the construction industry for 30 years and likes to design and create. Maybe that’s why he saw the Diamond in the Rough potential of the building on the corner of Garfield and South Airport in the old Cherryland Mall location. Todd remembered “way back” when for 20 years this building was the thriving local Steakhouse TC Traders where the who’s who of the community dined. Sadly, its Glory Days were long gone. The building had been forgotten and boarded up. It was overgrown, dark and gloomy. That is, until Todd came along. He jumped “All In,” buying the building with co-owner Beth MacLean. He admits that they had no “set-in-stone” plan or clear vision of their end result. Todd’s team got to work. Once the place had been completely gutted and they concluded that the structure itself was sound, they realized that there was not one window in the entire place. Todd directed his team to make holes to let the light in—and that’s when the “aha” moment comes! You see, the view of the parking lot and its adjacent stores isn’t at all pretty! (Early naysayers were quite vocal on that subject.) 26

The minute you step inside the restaurant, these waterfalls capture your attention, and they are just a few feet away from the dining tables. The waterfalls span the entire length of the restaurant’s picturesque wall of windows that frame a stunning view: Tall trees and Japanese red maples add greenery, creating a magnificent backdrop that transcends the stress of daily life for a serene dining experience. Speaking of transcendence, Todd’s construction crew did an amazing job inside. Everything you see was built by his carpenters. The feel and inspiration inside is Old World Elegant and Very Traditional with a copperstamped ceiling. Despite all of this finery, prices are very reasonable and won’t break the bank. The restaurant is family friendly to boot!

With challenge comes opportunity, and this is where the restaurant gained its focal point and stunning view of the only restaurant waterfall in Traverse City! Todd’s son Tyler dreamed up and designed the waterfalls’ unique shapes, and a stone company in Charlevoix custom-made the dramatic curved rocks that stack 12-feet high. What are actually three separate waterfalls flow outside, pumping 22,000 gallons of water per hour. They are lit at dusk. Dine at night to see them glow beautifully. 28

A not-to-miss is the wine room. It is most definitely a WOW with rich wood custom racks, completely encased in clear glass from floor to ceiling. It boasts an inventory of a fabulous selection of more than 5,000 bottles from around the world and Northern Michigan, too. The rusted earth−toned marble bar is in the shape of a huge horseshoe with plenty of room to spare, lined with bar stools for many and the perfect place to share a busy, after-work happy hour with colleagues. But why limit happy to only an hour, we ask? Happy hour here is from 4 to 7 p.m. and offers a new menu of 12 Enticing Appetizers for just five bucks each, paired with all drinks two bucks off. This is the perfect place to forget the work day and say, “Cheers!”

Tom Kelly is the executive chef and the man responsible for making all the magic happen in the kitchen and on the decadently delicious plates. The menu reflects seasonally and regionally inspired dishes prepared from scratch using fresh local ingredients. YUM! Here’s the part where we make your mouth water with dishes like Seared Sea Scallops, Whitefish Oscar, Bacon Wrapped Blue Cheese Dates, Warm Duck Salad, Crab and Lobster Bisque, and Lobster Mac and Cheese. I know you’re asking, Where’s the Beef? This is a Steakhouse?? Well, of course. How about choices of T Bone, Porterhouse, Slow Roasted Prime Rib, Tenderloin, Rib Eye or New York Strip? They are all served with your choice of accompanying sauce to enhance the flavor: Cabernet

Seared Sea Scallops

We were greeted with a smile. The food was incredible, the service impeccable, the prices super-reasonable!

Appetizer Plate of Whitefish Fritters, Crab cake and Bacon Wrapped Blue Cheese Dates

Demi-glace, Béarnaise, Au Poivre, Creamed Horseradish, Mushroom Demi or Au Jus. To add a little extra drama, the menu offers a uniquely dedicated array of toppings to complement your Steak even further. Copper Falls is quite frankly a Steak Utopia for the Steak Aficionado. Dessert you ask? Why this is delectable and sinful, of course! Desserts are all homemade on the premises, and the flourless chocolate cake is even good for those Gluten-Free eaters! The doors of the Copper Falls Steakhouse have only been open a few short months, and with TC’s heavy foodie competition, coupled with the diehard outside summer diners who flocked to their favorite spots that were closed all winter, it’s hard to predict the restaurant’s future popularity. It’s the new kid on the block so we have no doubt that many of you have yet to visit. Of those diners who have, this is what we heard and also personally experienced: “We were greeted with a smile. The food was incredible and the service impeccable, prices super-reasonable, and the waterfall was beautiful.” What more do you need to hear to go and give it a try it for yourself? Here’s a bonus. As we Fall Into cold weather, the welcoming and warm stone fireplace is Super Cozy!! Sounds like the perfect date night spot to me! 1796 South Garfield Avenue, Traverse City • 231.943-1103 www.copperfallssteakhousetc.com september/october 2013 | BAY LIFE NORTH

Family Footsteps It’s no secret to us locals that Northern Michigan is truly The Best Place to Raise a Family. But these families took it to the next step a generation or even a few generations back in time, planting deep roots and raising not only their own families, but family businesses. Today, these family businesses are still thriving, and they’re a part of all of our family’s daily lives, too. The following Small Businesses are local legends in our community, passing the torch to future generations.

oleson’s food stores Back in 1926, founders Gerald W. (known by all as “Mr. O”) and Frances Oleson opened their first small store on Front Street. The couple soon recognized the need for one-stop shop convenience, and they moved to a bigger location (today home to Impres Salon Spa) where they could offer the more modern experience of wider isles, a meat department and excellent service. The stores flourished. Today, of course, they are famous for their Bison, something son Jerry started in 1958 with a herd of three. They are also known for their generosity, giving back to the community in so many ways like the Oleson Fund and hosting the NMC Barbecue Picnic. Oleson’s Food Stores today comprise five stores. These are managed by grandsons D.J. and Brad Oleson, granddaughter Marty, her husband Jeff Watts and several of their children who work in the stores, too. fun fact: A small Bison herd sits on the 120 acres of The Great Wolf Lodge at the aptly named Bison Hollow. Initially, the name “Great Buffalo Lodge” was considered when the property was under development.

He earned the position of president of Midwestern Broadcasting Company and expanded the business to include nine radio stations. The Radio Center headquarters are housed on Front Street and are a vibrant part of our community. Always giving back, in 1978 Les and Anne Biederman made a gift to Munson Medical Center for a new emergency room, as well as later gifts to the Biederman Cancer Treatment Center and Hospice House. Son Chris Warren has been working within the family business since 1992, and he is the comptroller of Midwestern Broadcasting Company. He was just appointed by Governor Snyder to be on the Governor's Talent Investment Board, and he is Vice Chairman of the Board of the Michigan Association of Broadcasters. Chris also embraces volunteer roles and serves on many boards of directors in the community. He follows in his mom Brenda’s footsteps, who tirelessly fundraises for charitable causes. fun fact: If you have ever attended an annual fabulous fundraiser, chances are Brenda helped found it. Gerrit Jonkhoff, who came to America from the Netherlands in 1872, started the first Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Grand Rapids in 1884 along with his son Ralph. In the early ’30s, Ralph’s son Harold took over the family business, and he and his wife Margaret had two sons, Jack and Bob, who both became funeral directors. In 1976, Jack made a bold move from Grand Rapids to Traverse City where he purchased the Reynolds-Hansen Funeral Home. His son Dan joined the family business and in 1983 changed the Reynolds-Hansen Funeral Home to Reynolds-Jonkhoff. More present-day, in 1992 Dan and wife Peg acquired the funeral home after Dan’s father retired, and both daughters Chris and Lindsay have followed in those family footsteps. The entire Jonkhoff family enjoys being heavily involved in the community and tirelessly supports many charities, in addition to embracing the families they lovingly help every day. fun fact: This year marks the 120th anniversary of the historic Perry Hannah House on 6th Street where the Reynolds-Jonkhoff family business is housed.

The Hoxsie Farmhouse Pies span four generations! Verna and Larry Hoxsie planted the first cherry tree on their farm in 1946. A little time after that, Great Grandma Verna Hoxsie began selling her homemade pies on a roadside table, wisely capitalizing on M-72 being a busy road for travelers and locals alike. The quaint cherry pie tables were replaced in 1981 with a true farmers market building that today offers much more. Judy’s crew keeps the delicious aroma wafting out of the kitchen with an array of muffins, breads and pastries, too. All of the yummy creations come from the family’s fruit farm of 50 acres of sweet cherries, 95 acres of tart cherries and 25 acres of apples. In the fall, the farm offers Pumpkins and a Corn Maze, which of course is where you’ll find Denny on the tractor giving rides to grandkids Remy and Charlise.

Play Nice How many times do we remind our kids to Play Nice? Well Healthday News recently reported that Goodness doesn't go unrewarded: Young children are more likely to be nice to other children who are kind, a new study finds. Japanese researchers watched the day-to-day behavior of kindergarteners, aged 5 and 6, on the playground. The observations revealed that children were more likely to offer an object to or help a child whom they had seen being helpful to another child. As the old saying goes, Monkey See Monkey Do! It also justifies to try and keep them away from those kids you know aren’t so nice! 44

If You Try to Be Something You're Not – You End Up Being Nothing.

Screams in the Dark

Homework Do's It’s that time again: The dreaded Homework! But remember it is not only an opportunity for your child to learn but also is a chance for you to become involved. Teaching your child good homework habits early on in will prepare your child for more challenging work assignments in later years. Here are a few tips to instill a lifelong love of learning, and never having to use “The dog ate it excuse.” Talk to the teacher: Ask about the homework policy and a get lesson plans so you are all on the same page of what to expect. Set up a regular time for homework: Whether it’s as soon as they come home, after burning off a little energy, or after dinner. All kids are different, Find a time that works for your child and stick to it. Keep track of assignments: Keep a homework folder and make sure all papers are in the right place each night. Special space for homework: A desk or table works best, with a comfortable chair and ample lighting. 46

Provide all the supplies. Pencils, pens, rulers, paper so there are no excuses. Turn off the TV, cell phone, radio and video games. There needs to be quiet time to concentrate with no outside distractions. Check completed homework. If you have the homework folder this is a system to help stay aware of your child's progress, staying up to date. Check corrected homework. Keep an eye on homework at every stage, even after the teacher has marked on it.

september/october 2013 | BAY LIFE NORTH

Call the teacher as soon as you notice a homework problem. If work is too difficult or too easy, or your child is having trouble, let the teacher know, and discuss ways you can work together. Praise good work, it may seem simple but it means a lot to get extra encouragement.

North Bar Lake Overlook, Pierce Stocking Drive, Sleeping Bear Dunes Fall colors are a blaze at the North Bar Lake overlook, Pierce Stocking Drive, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

Meet Photographer John McCormick Aka Michigan Nut, whose absolute passion in life is capturing the beauty of Michigan through his magic lens. Of course, the lens isn’t really magic. The spectacular images he creates are all possible because of the talented eye behind it, truly a gift. John has perfected his craft over the last 30 years while also making Michigan his lifelong home with his wife and raising three great sons. That span of time has created a bountiful gallery. John’s stunning photographs can be found gracing walls in private homes and businesses all over the country, the highest of compliments that he finds very humbling. Another milestone on any photographers bucket list is to become a Getty Images Artist, and John has gained that honor, too, not to mention an impressive resume that includes being published in dozens of nationwide magazines and even representing the whole state in Pure Michigan magazine and wrap-around billboards. Why the name “Michigan Nut”? In John’s words, “Some Landscape photographers say Michigan has a lack of scenery. What they’re missing is a wilderness that stretches along miles of Great Lakes shoreline. Nowhere in the United States will you find an area that more reflects the dramatic seasonal changes, beautiful winters, colorful autumns and springs. It's a landscape continually changing. “Michigan is beautifully diversified with forests and rivers, wetlands of immense size, rocky ridge-lined and sand dune shorelines. And with over 100 lighthouses, historic buildings and an ancient mountain range, Michigan offers more than any photographer could ask for. A weekend gives you a glimpse and a week a good look, but it takes years to see the majority of what Michigan has to offer.” images below john's portrait (top): Beautiful Autumn capture of Bond Falls, near Paulding Michigan. Saskatoon Berries Saskatoon berry; Serviceberry; June berry; whatever you call it, this delicious, vitamin-packed super fruit is planting roots in the Grand Traverse region. Saskatoon berries (amelanchier alnifolia), a fruit that resembles a blueberry in appearance but are related to apples, have seen a growth spurt in Michigan agriculture in the last couple of years. Northern Michigan has ideal growing conditions for this fruit and with farmers looking to diversify their crops, Saskatoon berries have a chance to become a household staple in Michigan.

story and photography by John A. Gessner

58

september/october 2013 | BAY LIFE NORTH

One grower on the forefront of this expansion is Cross Farms, a family farm that raises their crop on a beautiful piece of land nestled among the many orchards that dot the countryside just north of Northport. Rick and Karen Cross have put in the time and sweat-equity investment that Saskatoon berries need to thrive. The Crosses purchased the land, formerly a cherry orchard, back in 2001 and spent the first five years rehabilitating the soil. The Saskatoon plants took another three years after planting to produce a crop, and are still on their upward trajectory in terms of yield. “Last year our total berry yield was about 3,000 pounds, which made us Michigan’s largest producer of Saskatoons, and that was up from just 1,500 pounds in 2011,” said Rick Cross, who manages the day-to-day operations on the farm. The Crosses have an annual yield goal of 10,000 pounds of Saskatoons, but that’s probably still a few years out. The Crosses aren’t the only ones tilling their land for this new crop. There are a few other farms growing Saskatoon berries in the Northern Michigan region, including Jacob’s Corn Maze (Traverse City) and Putney’s You Pick Berry (Benzonia); the number of farms interested in growing Saskatoon berries is sure to increase in stride with the fruit’s popularity. So, what exactly is a Saskatoon berry and why is it just now sprouting up in Michigan? Saskatoons are grown on hearty (and quite beautiful) bushes that can survive the harsh winters of the northern latitudes. The history of Saskatoon berries can be traced to the indigenous peoples of Western Canadian, for whom it was a staple food source. Today, Saskatoons have migrated east and south, and are invading Michigan’s northern lower peninsula. Although technically in the pome family (alongside cousins the apple and pear), the Saskatoons’ appearance looks very similar to dark purple blueberries. They have a delightful texture and a sweet, nutty taste that’s hard to put to words – my advice, buy a quart and taste them for yourself. Not only do they taste great, they also boast one of the highest levels of antioxidants of any fruit, and are considered a “super fruit” due to this and their high vitamin content.

Enough with the health benefits, I like to eat them because they’re good to eat and versatile in the kitchen. While I typically enjoy them fresh, either on my granola or by the handful, they’re also great dried, in pies, jams, muffins, pancakes, or as an alternative to any recipe that calls for berries. The beauty of this berry is not just in its taste, but also on the farm where it’s raised. I remember walking through the rows of dormant Saskatoon plants through a blizzard of an afternoon in December, with Blue, the Cross’ champion Australian Shepherd by my side. It was hard to imagine that these mere sticks, gasping for life from under the cover of snow, could transform into bountiful bushes that hang low with the weight of their fruit. Yet, transform they did. At the end of May, about a week after the peak cherry bloom, the Saskatoon flowers were out in all their glory. The gorgeous white flowers were awe-inspiring, from the delicate details of the thin petals, to the grand expanse of the entire orchard. That beauty was matched only when I arrived during a harvest of the berry itself. A group of friends, kids, and laborers, many of whom have worked the harvest since the beginning, gathered together on a hot July morning to handpick the berries. Due to the up-and-down temperatures we had this summer, not all the berries had ripened at once. Although it provided a beautiful variety of pinks, purples, and blues, it was tough work to pick. Not only does one need to be slow and deliberate to pick Saskatoons, the varying ripeness meant that they had to leave immature berries on the plant for a harvest scheduled the following week. Despite the year’s challenges, the Cross’ Saskatoons had another productive year and produced about 5,000 pounds. The demand for these berries is growing, and all of the Cross’ berries have been gobbled up this year (mostly by local food distributors). Satisfy your taste buds - and your curiosity - next summer and get them while you can! You might just find your new favorite fruit - I think I have.

Granite and natural stone is not new as a countertop surface, but continues to be in high demand. Most of today’s consumers are looking for that one of a kind stone or something with an “other than” polished finish. The fabricators are responding and finding rare and extremely beautiful stone as well as offering many different finishes on the surface. Honed and leathered are two we recommend quite often. Although it may take away some of the color and depth of the stone, it gives a more casual look.

Stones of many shapes, sizes and colors are entering the baths as shower floors and features. These are typically true pebbles, either full round or cut flat set on a mesh backer. This application appeals not only to our out doorsie side, but the sense that we are at the spa and relaxing in a hot steamy shower. Now if we could only design in the personal masseuse. Petoskey stones for hardware, backsplash features or inset into any tile application, rings true to our love of state. Combine this with hardware that might be shaped like twigs or pine cones and you know that you live up north.

For the more contemporary heart, grasses or tile with lineal movement that looks like grass is very popular. Using glass that has grass or straw sandwiched between 2 panes as a room divider is a great approach to a clean, yet earthy design. And most popular this year, has been flooring that looks like old barn or driftwood. The organic gray tone of this wood lends so well with the current color trend, yet reminds us of a simpler life style. One that we all strive to live in our beautiful area.

The Mohr Family—Erica, Brian, Dillyn and Brady—are Home at Last after a three-year journey of dreaming and designing and a full year of home construction. Oh yeah, and there was that little thing of being a showcase house on The Parade of Homes Tour! This is Part 2. You may remember that we featured the home and their personal story as Part 1 in our May/ June edition. They were on the home stretch but not quite ready phase then. You can check out the feature in our online archives. What a whirlwind! We sat down with them in their Dream House living room and got caught up.

{bl} So, did it feel funny that 2,000 people had trudged through your home before you even got to live in it? {e+b} “No, not at all, not even a bit weird. As it got down to the wire, just to get the house ready for the deadline, there were people coming and going constantly in the house, so there were always a million people inside. {bl} What’s the Best Thing so far that you love? {e} “Just last night I said, ‘I Love this Kitchen!’” {e+b} “We planned the pizza oven when were on a trip to Italy. We basically built the whole house around it, and could never have imagined how much fun it could be. Everyone gets involved. So far, we have had two pizza parties and it’s so awesome. It becomes an event! The kids make their own dough, choose their toppings and then the grown-ups do, too. Family all sitting down and eating together is a big passion for us.”

{bl} Any other favorites? {e} “There is not a day that I don’t go in my space in the master bathroom and just go ‘aahh.’” {b} “I agree. I love that we opted for completely separate areas for vanities. I have my own space and keep it as messy or as clean as I want, totally different from sharing a double vanity space. I also am really thrilled with how the design of the fireplace came out.”

{bl} Is the house officially now “Broke in?” {e+b} “Oh yeah! Our little Westie had doggie accidents on the carpet the first week! Spaghetti sauce stained the backsplash, Brian dropped a pan on the kitchen floor, Erica vacuumed up some stone on the fireplace, and we had a houseful of guests the very first week. Our philosophy was before the Parade everything had to be perfect; after that, it’s your house and your home and it’s all good. We are pretty laid back about it now.”

{bl} What about the kids? {e+b} “Oh, the kids loved the unpacking. Their toys were in storage so it was like Christmas morning! They were like, ‘Get Me Another Box!’ They just love everything, and being outside in the neighborhood. We also planted a vegetable garden we had promised them, so they got seeds for Corn, Broccoli, Tomatoes, Carrots, Cucumber and Brady loves Watermelon, so that, too. We may be a little off with the seasons, but oh well, they loved digging and planting it—that’s all that counts!” {bl} Any Words of Wisdom, after the fact? {e} “It’s funny actually. Some people just don’t understand how we could do it, but it’s so FUN! I try to explain to them, think about all the things in your house right now that you hate, and imagine designing it exactly how you would want everything from scratch! It’s so rewarding, why wouldn’t you do it? You can either buy off the rack and try to make it fit or pay a little extra to make it custom just to your specifications, dreams and wishes and LOVE it forever!” {bl} Well said, Erica! Welcome Home. We wish you and your family bliss and happiness in a home full of wonderful loving memories that truly last a lifetime. Autumn in Motion Autumn, the harvest season, is a flowing showcase of nature’s primal beauty. The bear races against the quickening clock of her own destiny as the opportunity for food begins to end. Bucks roam, duel competitors, and seek out mates to continue their line. Birds fly south to the bounty of warmer climes. These battles for life are set against a periphery of indescribable beauty in the trees. I contemplated these scenarios as I stared out beyond this river and into the thick of the forest ahead. The fallen drops of autumn in the river below created a current of color as a slight wind plucked the cords of the leaves overhead. I inhaled deeply, breathing in the season; cool, crisp, and full of life. I savored that moment, and fought the thought of the winter to come. 80
