“In any given moment, we have two options: to step forward into growth or to step back into safety.” - Abraham Maslow

NOTE FROM THE

publisher

With Leah and Joe Short of Short’s Brewing in Bellaire on location for their photo shoot.

I

love this quote, and I think we can all agree, because of the tumultuous year that 2020 was. We all stepped forward into growth, accomplishing unimaginable feats. We stretched our comfort zones in every direction. Talk about learning “life lessons”! We were forced to spend time with our families, something we had always been “too busy” and “overscheduled” to do before. Some days it was easy and other days it was just plain agonizing. But we made it. Cheers to a new year filled with possibilities. As you read this, we are literally “holding hands sharing the moment,” taking on 2021 together. Today more than ever, BayLife Magazine is that “little slice of normal” coming into your homes. Our colorful pages hold the power to connect you to the familiar faces we all miss interacting with, smiling faces without masks. We “show and tell” the love of our community, our sense of pride for our beloved hometown of Traverse City. Despite all the unknown, one thing is certain we all still feel so lucky to live here. Taking all that into consideration, Tom and I worked hard to make this a vibrant fresh issue full of hope and resilience. We included

local happy faces. We highlighted how to support our local bars and restaurants, in this COVID-19 world. At press time Feb 1 is the big opening day, but only at a 25% capacity. So, adapted ways of take out and dining out will still be relevant for a while. Undeterred by this, we share news of your fellow neighbors (brave souls) going “all-in” with new ventures. Traverse City is still thriving and it’s exciting to bring these people’s stories to life.

We were listening to Christal Frost on WTCM radio and Bill was her guest chatting about the blog he writes, “making you matter.” It was enlightening to hear that this local well-known businessman had such a passion to genuinely inspire and motivate people. His stories and every day simple steps help pave the way for a happier self. “Bingo!” We both said, “we have to feature Bill in the magazine for everyone to read.” The timing seemed like serendipity.

Outside of TC, we took a snowy road trip to Bellaire. There, we met up with Joe and Leah Short, owners of Short’s Brewing Company. Their success story is mind-blowing, and we felt so humbled they allowed us deep into their operations where all the Short’s magic happens. Joe shared his story very candidly with us, and I guarantee it’s a fun read. But you will get thirsty. Thanks again to Leah, she hooked me up with a sample bag to take home.

So, grab a coffee or tea. Oh heck, if it’s later, make it a cocktail. Get comfy and dig into the pages and be entertained. We hope you love it and it makes you smile. I truly miss seeing everyone’s smiling faces, and hugs. I’m a hugger. This too shall pass, right?

As you linger over each page and enjoy reading about other people, you might conclude that our Bill Marsh Jr. feature is more about you than him. We discovered his devotion for self-awareness quite by chance.

A NEW HOME WITH ROOM TO ROAM Finding what’s right for the next phase in life

“My work takes me all over the country & we could live anywhere. But this is exactly where we want to be.”

The Fierbergs have purchased, sold or refinanced at least 6 properties in the past 13 years.

Last purchase: “This is a wonderful dream for our family.”

25

acre horse farm When Doug and Janine Fierberg became empty nesters, they decided to revisit what their next move should be. They wanted a place that would sustain them during the long winters and that would be a wonderful, welcoming home for their daughters. They found exactly that: A 25-acre horse farm, just five miles from downtown Traverse City. With West Shore Bank’s help, the property quickly became theirs. Now visitors encounter 8 elegant horses. Janine rides daily. Their daughters are visiting more often and, despite not growing up there, consider it their true home. The contentment is clear in Doug’s voice when he shares that this has been everything they hoped for—and more. West Shore Bank. For Life’s Grand Adventure.

“Others promised white glove treatment. I just wanted a truly responsive bank.” - Doug Fierberg

Other banks told Doug they wanted to help make this deal happen, but Doug said they were slow to respond and noncommittal about the outcome. ‘Some lenders make promises,’ he said. ‘West Shore Bank makes dreams come true.’ When he raves about our service as if it’s something special, it’s somewhat surprising to me, because this is just what comes naturally to our team— it’s what we do for all of our clients. MOVERS & SHAKERS MATT MCDONOUGH, DISCOVERY CENTER CEO

M EET

Matt McDonough DISCOVERY CENTER CEO

Can you explain what the Discovery Center and pier is? It’s a place for people to connect with the Great Lakes through recreation, education, history, science and stewardship. Right now, those connections are made through the program and recreational offerings of our partners. Who are your partners? • Inland Seas Education Association • Maritime Heritage Alliance • The Watershed Center • Northwestern Michigan College • The Great Lakes Children’s Museum • Traverse Area Community Sailing • Traverse Tall Ship Company, owner of the Tall Ship Manitou • Discovery Cruises Traverse City, that will have a new tour boat, Discovery, operating from the pier this year • Fish-X-TC, a charter fishing business The pier looks different than it did a year ago. What’s the plan? We’re in the midst of a transformation right now – turning the old coal dock into a community space. Once our next phase is completed, the pier will be like a smaller version of the Open Space. Every feature will be designed and constructed using universal access principles – standards that go above and beyond. There will be a green/open space lawn; barrier free parking and promenade around the perimeter; new fishing railing along the pier with forearm rests, 25% of which will be at a lower level for children and people in wheelchairs;

shade structures to provide places of refuge from the sun and inclement weather; and a kayak launch specially designed for people with disabilities. The pier sign says public welcome. What is allowed? Right now, you can fish off the east wall of the pier and view the tall ships. When our next phase is complete, you’ll be able to add kayaking and picnicking to the list. What is your role as the first CEO of the Discovery Center Great Lakes? Building partnerships, fundraising to pay for the planned improvements, and developing the right mix of partners and uses that will help us accomplish our mission and pay the bills. What’s on your wish list to enhance the program? Developing programming with our partners that serve more youth – regardless of their socio-economic background. My goal is to give youth, who would not otherwise have the opportunity, a place to be inspired by the different facets and career paths related to fresh water – science, technology, navigation, etc. and then create pathways for that inspiration to follow. What are you most excited about? The opportunities that exist to create new partnerships and programs. For example, we’re working with Northwestern Michigan College’s Water Studies Institute on the viability of a series of tours to explore some of the shipwrecks of West Bay with its students and underwater ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles), but onboard our partner’s vessels.

The entire 5,000 square feet of what was the old Norris Elementary School gymnasium has been transformed into a state-of-the-art workout utopia, named Gateway Fitness Gym. Brought to you by owners Gary Brooks and Jeremy Wells. It’s open 24 hours a day, with Bluetooth entry access, and with the huge amount of square footage it makes social distancing a breeze. They have limitless workout options and provide trainers and educated staff to help you achieve your goals. Fun tip – they even have equipment for Ninja Warrior Training (just in case)! 10783 E. Hidden Gem Do you like to shop new? Do you enjoy the hunt for a great bargain? Would you like to give back to local charities? If so, you need to check out B2 Outlet Stores! It is a fun treasure trove store on the east side of town in the half vacant Cherryland Center. It’s like a mini T.J.Maxx with a little of everything; men’s women’s, kid’s, housewares, etc. They carry name-brand liquidated goods at a fraction of the price. It’s a Michigan-owned business and the Traverse City location opened last summer. Their store manager, Dorothy Jaquish, told us, “We did back to school supplies for Single MOMM, and a month later we gave $1,000 to Father Fred. We teamed up with Traverse City High School and donated to their food pantry. We did another clothing donation of about 2,000 pieces to their baby and adult clothing pantry.” Hot tip- it’s especially great for kids clothing, because they grow so quick! So, shop with purpose and help them to give MORE. 1792 S. Garfield Road, Unit A-100 b2outlets.com.

On top of a 70-80% loss in sales, the restaurant spends an additional $1,600 per week stocking the cooler for families in need. “During the summer, we were doing between 500 and 700 meals a weekend. As soon as local schools shut down again, that number was back up to 800.” In return for their meal, kids will leave hand drawn pictures in the cooler. J & S started collecting these pictures – a bulletin board full. When asked if Tiffany would be able to pinpoint the type of demographic that needs the most help, she believes it’s too difficult to say. There have been families coming from all over Grand Traverse County and even surrounding counties, just to receive free meals. “We learned so much about ourselves when the pandemic first hit. The biggest thing that I learned is, there is so much of yourself that you can give. There are so many opportunities to give back to the community. It’s not always about money – it’s about happiness and taking care of families.” “I don’t know what the future looks like for Project Feed the Kids. I do know that with community support, anything is possible.”

NORTHERN

HERO

Project Feed the Kids

‘Northern Hero’ focuses on highlighting inspiring groups, events, and individuals within our community. We seek to find people who give back to the community in selfless ways. Project Feed the Kids is an initiative created by J & S Hamburg South Airport. Every week since the beginning of the pandemic, J & S Hamburg South Airport has stocked a cooler full of meals – 800 per week, to be exact. These meals are first-come, first-serve, and free to families in need. Owners Tiffany and Jason McQueer knew that they had an opportunity to make a positive impact in the community when the pandemic hit in March of 2020. While Jason has worked at J & S for over 20 years, he and his wife Tiffany have owned the restaurant for the past seven years. They have six children of their own, all of whom help at the restaurant. “We’re a family owned restaurant”, said Tiffany, “but if you’re not family and you’re working at J & S, you might as well be family.” While Project Feed the Kids brings joy to the community, it also brings joy to the J & S staff who know they’re making a difference. “It’s brought a lot of happiness to us in an uncertain time in our lives,” said Tiffany. “This was our way of helping children in need.”

Andrew Dzierwa was born and raised in Traverse City and is passionate about promoting the people and culture within his hometown. Andrew works full-time at Hagerty, and enjoys fishing and playing the piano in his free time. To nominate an individual for this column email: editor@baylifenorth.com

Re-imagine TC Restaurant Week Our beloved restaurants and their staff have had an unimaginable hard year. Hopefully as this magazine goes to print, indoor dining ban is lifted. But COVID19 restrictions will still be in effect. So, fulfilling big expectations to celebrate restaurant week, which is February 21 to March 6, is once again more important than ever! The Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is hopeful it can still pull it off a successful week this year, with adaptations. And, instead of one week, it hopes for two glorious weeks of food. The extension allows room for distance and lower capacities. Many patrons may still do not feel safe, so this year will also include take out options. So far, many of your favorite restaurants have already signed up. “Prices will still be set at the $25 and $35 levels this year,” says DDA Downtown Experience Coordinator Nick Viox. “As long as people are supporting our businesses, whether in person or to-go, that’s all that really matters.” How’s that for a little slice of normal!

Let Them Eat Cake (on Union St.) Sweet lovers take note. Mark and Kim Norton’s bakery, Water’s Edge Sweet Tooth, made from scratch cakes and sweet treats, is on the move! Previously located in Logan’s Landing, the couple are now “kicking it old school,” coming to old town on Union Street in the previous spot where the restaurant Benedict was. “We used to eat here, we knew we wanted our new location to be downtown, but I do a lot of weddings, so pick up on Front Street wouldn’t work. So, when we found it would be available, we jumped on it,” says Kim. The kitchen is almost complete with Kim’s industrial oven and giant-sized mixers, and they hope to open any day. Along with cakes you can expect coffee, scones, bagels brought in from Bubbie’s Bagels and an extra special breakfast cookie made with honey instead of sugar. 405 S. Union Street, Traverse City watersedgesweettooth.com

Egg Static Move When Patisserie Amie moved and rebranded from Lake Street to Front Street, it opened up a dilemma for Lesley Elsen, owner of Benedict on Union Street. “I was fine to stay for a year, but when this opened up, I felt like I should jump on it,” she laughed. You could call her crazy; it’s a bold move from the little space she had. “It had such limitations, and with COVID-19 restrictions I needed more room.” On the day we popped in, construction was underway. “It’s going to be a whole new space,” she said, glowing, because as well as opening a new restaurant all over again, she is also having a baby in March, and has a 2-year-old toddler at home. “The slow-down was a long pause to reflect for the things I’m grateful for. We survived the summer and leaning on my staff, it put things into perspective,” she said. Soon you will be able to enjoy her ‘EGGstra-Special Menu’ you can also look forward to pastries, expanded coffee choices, and even a cocktail! Lightening can strike twice in the same place for success, when local fluffy eggs and house smoked brown sugar bacon are involved! 237 Lake Street, Traverse City benedicttc.com

A Sub Above A Jersey Mike’s sub shop is coming to town. The popular franchise idea was hatched on the golf course at Crystal Mountain, where Bob Messick and Justin Helmholdt worked as golf pros. Trading in golf hats for sub shop hats, they scored big, getting the rights to northern Michigan. To begin in Traverse City was an easy choice. Next was finding that perfect location! When That’s a Pizza closed, leaving a vacant corner location with parking across from Northwestern Michigan College and the Dennos Museum. They found the right spot. It’s very much a family affair with Justin’s wife, Meagan and Bob’s wife, Julia and his son, Jordan all onboard. “We have 10 weeks of Jersey Mike’s training in Novi (Michigan),” says Justin. “It may be a franchise, but we are all still local and we will employ local people too. We also love that it’s a company that gives back to the community. On March 25, companywide, they give 100% of proceeds to charity.” Jersey Mikes started in the seaside town of Point Pleasant, New Jersey in 1956. More than 64 years later and over 2,000 locations strong. The famed “A Sub Above” boasts that the value of ingredients, and its secret “juice” makes it special. They hope to open mid-March when we can sample for ourselves and decide what all the fuss is about. Justin and Meagan Helmholdt with their business partner Bob Messick

CHEERS Winter Soul Sippers

with Darric from Folgarelli’s

The winter months are upon us and our choice in wines tend to lead us to heavier red wines. Over the past year, I have paid special attention to the Paso Robles region of California. Although wines from this region have been in the market for years, I have found the overall quality has improved greatly. Paso is known for its fruit forward, warm climate reds, and I have found some incredible wines.

Our Legendary Steaks, Seafood and Prime Rib Have Made Us a Northern Michigan Landmark Full menu! Not taking reservations at this time. Outside waiting only. Hours: Monday - Thursday 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM Friday - Saturday 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM | Sunday 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM

The New York Restaurant offers eclectic cuisine in a comfortable setting, overlooking Little Traverse Bay’s waterfront featuring fine gourmet dining, a professional and attentive wait staff and talented bartenders.

Donati Winery has recently become one of my favorites from Paso. Family owned and operated, they have been farming in the area for decades, selling grapes to neighboring wineries and producing some incredible wines under their own label. The Immigrant, named after Albino Donati, who immigrated to the U.S. to make a better life for his family, is a delicious red blend, “dark, dense fruit, layered with hints of oak and spice. Complex with a long finish”. A must try for a soul warming winter red.

On the local scene, another “Soul Sipper” is the Mari Vineyards Row 7. This red blend is grown on the Old Mission Peninsula meticulously put together by winemaker Sean O’Keefe. A fruit forward wine with flavors of dark berry finishing with soft tannins. A delicious wine for winter sipping.

HOME GROWN & LOCAL

Short’s Brewing Company

“Life Is Short’s, Drink It While You’re Here” Kind humans and Short’s Brewery Owners, Joe and Leah Short

HOME GROWN &

Local

with Short’s Brewing Company 121 N Bridge St., Bellaire www.Short’sbrewing.com

The Short’s Brewery story begins in 2004 in a renovated hardware store. Can you elaborate? With the “Short” version! Pretty much just that. We set up shop in a rural northern Michigan town smack dab in the middle of the chain of lakes. That’s where I wanted to live and making beer was what I wanted to do. “Love where you live and love what you do”. With a handful of dollars, blind ambition and some craft brew skills - an old hardware was transformed into one of Antrim County’s biggest attractions. Just like during the early colonial brewing era, I wanted Short’s to be a place of significance in the community. A place where people would gather and guide the future of what living and working in Bellaire would look like. We planned on keg distribution and on premise beer sales only. Food was never a primary consideration but evolved into an awesome and significant part of our company. I always envisioned living above the pub, brewing beer every day and enjoying a pint after a brew day. I believe the vision, spirit and enthusiasm of the project attracted people I never expected it would. Many of them, now in leadership roles in the organization. Scott Newman Bale - CEO, Tony Hansen - CIO, Tyler Glaze - COO, Rachel Brege - CFO, Erin Kuethe - Pub General Manager, Jon Wojotowicz - Sales and Pauline Knighton - Sales Director and truly the entire Short’s Team. I would say the early years were critical “do or die” and had my wife Leah not joined the team, we may not be having this conversation. When Leah joined, we became an item and a formidable duo who carved the path that led us to where we are today. The old adage is true - A company is only as extraordinary as its people.

Short’s is “creatively fearless beer that fosters ambition and imagination.” Can you explain this for us? Yeah. Basically we’re not afraid to see what we can do with liquid formulation or worry about how they would be perceived. That’s what “fearless” is to me. An element of risk and reward with a pinch of confidence. We had everything to gain and nothing to lose in those early years. So going big and throwing caution to the wind is (in my opinion) how we were able to hold our ground in such an unlikely demographic in which one would start microbrewery. Being ok to fail and try the un-tried. Beers like (and just to name a few), Smoked Apple Ale, Bloody Beer, Black Licorice Lager, Blood Orange Wheat Wine, Pistachio Cream Ale, Rye ICE IPA, Sagejuana, Nicie Spicie, Joyous Almondo, Another Caucasion Gary, Bim-Bam-Boom, It’s About Thyme, Juicy Tree, Spruce Pilsner, Make Like a Tree, S’more Stout and Soft Parade, which has become a top selling brand for us. It’s making tageable imagination happen in liquid form. Not all of them are home runs but most are at least doubles or triples. Kind of like the Willy Wonka world of beer. You have three brands under your company umbrella, how are they different? Starcut Ciders: Starcut Ciders was founded in 2014 and born out of a desire to make unique ciders from the orchards that surround us in Michigan. We exist to create modern ciders for the people on planet earth and beyond. These ciders are all natural and naturally gluten free. Our three flagship brands range from bone dry (Pulsar) to semi-sweet (Octorock) to a mimosa-inspired wonder that blends cider with orange juice (Mosa). You can pick these up as six packs, or grab a variety pack that features a rotating seasonal brand. Beaches Hard Seltzer: We wanted to get into the Seltzer market, but do it our way—no basic seltzers here. Our cocktail-inspired variety packs are made with all natural flavors and ingredients. We’ve currently got two variety packs in the market—the first pack has Margarita, Mojito, Paloma, and Piña Colada and our second pack features Tom Collins, Cosmo, Moscow Mule, and Tequila Sunrise. Arcadia Brewing Co: We had the opportunity to license this Michigan legacy brand and jumped at the chance to bring some of our favorite craft brands back to market. Whitsun Wheat ale is available year round, and we just announced the rest of our 2021 line up—with Porter Rico Coconut Porter, Loch Down Scotch Ale, Hopmouth Double IPA, Sippelicious Wheat, and fan fave Jaw-Jacker—the PSL of fall beers. During the pandemic your summer sales soared up 30%. What do you attribute that to? People were thirsty! Our sales are typically up over the summer months and we believe we had the right products in market at the right time— including larger package sizes like 12 and 24 packs. Our expansion into new states certainly didn’t hurt either. We also released some great variety packs and brought a new flagship brand to market—Lil’ Huma, a full-flavored, low-cal, low-carb, low-ABV IPA that’s only 95 calories. It’s a great alternative beer for folks that want to crush a few beers and do awesome stuff.

You recently added another five states to your distribution, how many states are you up to? Short’s Brewing Company beers are currently available in eight states: Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Colorado, Florida, New York City (five boroughs + Long Island) Our ciders and seltzers are available in all of the above plus New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and the Nashville, Tennessee area. Arcadia Brewing Company. beers are available in Michigan only. Starting as a home brewer could you ever imagine how successful this venture would become? How many people does Short’s now employ in the community? I always believed hard work would pay off, but I never would have been able to envision what we’ve become. I think if you’re passionate about what you do and the impact you can make - you will find success. We currently employ 152 people. Do you have any words of wisdom or a quote you live by? “Life Is Short’s, Drink It While You’re Here” - For me this is more or less saying: you get a short window of time to live life on this planet. So live it up. Follow your dreams, take chances, leave a positive mark, do good and honorable things. Find love, be loved and give love. Pursue passion. Live where you wanna live and do what you wanna do. Life is Short’s so drink it up! “Love Where You Live and Love What You Do” “Made by People Who Care in Northern Michigan” “May the Short’s Be With You” are a few others I enjoy. 2021 is a gigantic growth year, tell us what’s in store. Each year we try to be a little less reactive which is difficult in an ever changing environment. We tried to set ourselves up for success the best we could for growth by adding a new brew kettle, case packer, and storage building to our Elk Rapids Production Facility. These updates allow us to speed up the process of getting lots of different kinds of products in different formats out the door and ease some of our supply chain issues we saw in 2020. We’re opening up a new tap room in Elk Rapids as soon and we’re able and we’re constantly working different Pub operation scenarios to accommodate the COVID 19 mandates. We’re doing pretty well with our takeout food and beer to-go sales. Another way we’re innovating our business in Bellaire was working with the Village and DDA this winter to create a COVID-friendly outdoor “Kegger Campground” with extra kegs we have on hand. The Kegger Campground is 12 individual open air campsites designed to seat six people with the option of having a campfire!

Short’s Brewery CEO - Scott Newman Bale and Joe Short

We are always innovating—the only thing that stays the same at Short’s is change!

BILLTalks When you hear the name Bill Marsh Jr., you might naturally think of the car industry, the tradition Bill Marsh Sr. tirelessly built. Two generations of trust, exceeding expectations and the outstanding Marsh family legacy in our community; Committed to strong, dependable relationships in business and in giving back ten-fold to those less fortunate. Over the Christmas holiday, Tom and I were stuck in the car for hours at Schuss Mountain while our daughter was ski race training. All of sudden we hear Bill’s calm and confident voice talking on the Christal Frost show on WTCM. We listened intently, mesmerized by his harmonious voice and the power of his positivity. Simple life lessons that we all need a gentle reminder. Intrigued, we delved a little deeper, and discovered his passion is a blog he writes aptly named, “Making You Matter.” It’s a side of Bill Marsh Jr, we didn’t know.

“The theme of my blog is ‘presenting the best version of yourself.’ That can mean different things to different people. For some, presenting the best version of themselves is all about building better habits while for others it may be strengthening their leadership skills and for still others it might mean a consistent dose of inspiration and perspective.” At the start of a new year, with so much to be hopeful for than ever before we felt it was such a great idea to share his stories.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACQUELINE SOUTHBY

The Surprising Truth about the Pursuit of Happiness My first big opportunity in the auto business came in the summer of 1986 when my father, determined to avoid the nepotism so prevalent in familyowned businesses, purchased a tiny Ford dealership in Honor, Michigan, and commissioned my brother and me to run it by ourselves. We were thrilled at the prospect of being among the youngest dealership owner/ operators in the country. And since it was so small–-we opened with seven employees–-we personally connected with nearly every customer who walked through our doors; in fact, we came to know some of them like family over the years.

I recall one soon-to-be-retired couple from downstate who purchased a Ford pickup to haul their newly acquired travel trailer. After years of vacationing in the area, the husband, employed in a blue-collar job for the same company throughout his entire working life, shared how much he was looking forward to retirement.

“The last few years have been a grind,” he said, “but when I retire and never have to work another day in my life, then I’ll finally be happy.”

Sadly, within 4 years after his retirement party, the happiness that this hardworking man so looked forward to was short-lived: he died of a heart attack.

July 1986 - My brother and I in Honor MI, working at our first dealership.

The Illusion of Happiness Stories like this are all too common. They illuminate an important perspective shared by people who live well:

happiness is never a destination. Yet for most of us, that’s what we’ve been taught our entire lives. It’s the doctrine of the American dream: If you work hard then you will be successful and only then, once you achieve some milestone in your life like graduating from college, earning a good income, getting married, becoming a partner in your firm, or, in my customer’s case, retiring, then and only then can you lay claim to the elusive treasure of happiness. This assumption undergirds our approach to parenting, coaching, managing employees, and the way we motivate our own behavior. But it is scientifically flawed partly because every time you experience success, your brain raises the bar for what success looks like. So you if got good grades in school, now you have to get better grades; if you run a half-marathon, now you have to run a full marathon; if you achieve your sales target, now you’ll get a higher sales target. As Shawn Achor, author of the book, The Happiness Advantage, says, “If happiness is on the other side of success, your brain never gets there. We’ve pushed happiness on the other side of the cognitive horizon.”

The New Field of Positive Psychology New research in neuroscience shows that it works the other way around: We become more successful when we are happier and more positive. When people experience greater levels of positivity in the present, the critical measures of performance all increase significantly.  For example, doctors put in a positive mood before making a diagnosis are 19% more accurate than in a neutral state.

Optimistic salespeople outsell their pessimistic counterparts by 56%. Students primed to feel happy before taking math achievement tests far outperform their neutral peers. Studies consistently show that our brains are literally hardwired to perform at their best not when they are negative or even neutral, but when they are positive.

Reversing the Formula

Dubbed “the science of happiness,” positive psychology introduced a new approach to cognitive health. Instead of focusing only on disorders like depression and anxiety, it measures things like optimism, hope, and compassion. By quantifying positive psychological influences, researchers discovered simple behavioral changes that improve every dimension of human potential: performance, intelligence, creativity, leadership ability, and health.

1. Gratitude Writing down three things you are grateful for each day trains your brain to scan the world for positive versus negative influences.

Research shows that practicing these five simple actions for just two minutes a day for 21 days can literally rewire your brain:

2. Journaling Just two minutes of writing about a positive experience in your life allows your brain to relive it.

3. Exercise

Short bursts of cardiovascular exercise each day teaches your brain that your behavior matters.

4. Meditation

As little as two minutes of daily mindfulness trains your brain not to multitask but be present in the moment.

5. Conscious Acts of Kindness Writing one positive email every day praising or thanking someone in your social support network trains our brain that when we strengthen our ties to others, we strengthen our own potential.

Everyday Happiness is a Choice Years ago, a friend emailed me a document titled, “The Way to Live” by an anonymous author. Since then I’ve shared this simple yet profound manifesto on happiness with countless people. These final sentences sum it all up: “We convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, then another. Then we are frustrated that the kids aren’t old enough and we’ll be more content when they are. After that, we’re frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. We will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage. We tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her act together, when we get a nicer car, are able to go on a nice vacation, when we retire.

The truth is, there’s no better time to be happy than right now. If not now, when?” Remember, the pursuit of happiness isn’t really a pursuit at all—it’s the starting point.

The Marsh family Kirsten, Nicole, Bill, Debbie and Will.

The Tale of

Two Kitchens

You and your family have been stuck at home for months now. With all the extra time spent slaving away in your kitchen, you have formed strong opinions on its functionality. Do you love it, or do you hate it? With Traverse City’s rising real estate prices, investing in updating your kitchen is a smart choice. With rising equity there is even money in your house to pay for it! Plus, you get to benefit and love your home again. Check out these two beautiful renovations for some extra inspiration. Then get busy on your wish list. Full disclosure: they had professional help!

BEFORE

BEFORE

The Wow Kitchen Kerri Winningham had one goal for her condo kitchen remodel. “I wanted a WOW,” she laughs. “While everyone else was growing up looking at fashion magazines, I looked at design and home magazines. I love Better Homes & Gardens. It’s always been my passion. I would get so many ideas and be so inspired. I love to go to home tours, and just dream. So when we suggested to Liz Jerome, owner and designer of @Home Cabinetry & Interiors, if she had a fun project to feature, she knew just the perfect couple and the most amazing project. “Kent & Kerri are incredibly beautiful souls. We especially love and appreciate them,” says Liz The dream location of the WOW kitchen started a long time ago. Kerri and her husband Kent are from South Eastern Michigan. Kerri’s grandparents retired on the Old Mission Peninsula, and she has magical childhood memories. After her grandparents sadly passed, they didn’t visit until years later to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. “We fell in love with the area all over again, and asked ourselves why we haven’t been coming up here.” They decided they would test the waters and rent a place for one year. Hook, line and sinker they were all in so the next step was plant roots and purchase real estate. They put a deposit down on to-be built condos downtown. So, when they saw a listing for an existing condo that promised a million dollar view, they didn’t want to like it. They almost canceled, but Kerri had a feeling they needed to see it. “We walked in and I saw that view. That was it!” The condo was nice but dated, but Kerri had a fresh canvas all of her own, in her dream location where they planned to retire. Oh, the possibilities! “At first we decided we would just paint, then we said, let’s do the floors.” They finally came to the realization that they didn’t want to live through construction. Kerri contacted @Home Cabinetry and Interiors in Traverse City. That’s when they hired Liz, a true professional, to transform the space. “We met and I told her everything I wanted, and in the next meeting she had completely nailed it!”

“We fell in love with the area all over again.”

BEFORE The entire plan to update and modernize the space went beyond just the kitchen. So, there were different phases to the renovation. Liz’s complete interior design company is so unique for this reason. Liz listens, and completely visualizes her client’s needs, making suggestions from her wealth of experience. She then forges the blueprint, and her husband executes the plan. He is a finish trim carpenter, which enables him to custom produce cabinets and complete all construction needed. They are a dynamic team. The only major curve ball they had to face was the COVID-19 shutdown. Just a little detail. Luckily, Kent and Kerri still live and work downstate, so the condo was empty. So the shutdown halted production for a short time and when they were able to resume, they adapted with restrictions along the way, because Liz didn’t have to rely on an outside contractor. “I live with him,” she laughed. Some of the updates include

“We just love coming here on the weekends and cannot wait until we can make it our permanent home.” BEFORE shiplap walls and a custom steel bannister, new millwork, flooring, lighting, cabinets, microwave drawer, and custom woodwork on the island. There are also updates in the living room, including the fireplace. It all came together beautifully. To polish the look, Kerri and Kent spend their treasured Traverse City weekends shopping for just the right elements. “The little birds on the table I got downtown at Nest, “Kerri said. The flawless finished design is simply stunning. Making Kerri’s lifelong dream WOW kitchen a true reality. It’s a showstopper and is ready for its close up, and magazine debut! “I can’t believe it’s my house, we just love coming here on the weekends and cannot wait until we can make it our permanent home.”

The Sparty Kitchen PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSIE ZEVALKINK

On first glance of Kendra Worden’s “before” kitchen, you may wonder why she needed a kitchen overhaul. “Before” photos are usually painfully obvious; scary and sad crying out for the magic wand of an interior designer. But Kendra’s looked pretty good. In fact, it was the first question we asked her! Her answer, “Well we bought the house 4 ½ years ago. The house was built in the 1970s and updates were done in the 1990s. It was dated, and some of what you don’t see is all the cabinets were falling off the hinges. “It was time!” she laughs. Ok we’ll believe her. The family’s kitchen is also home to Kendra’s three growing boys, ages 8, 12 and almost 15. So, it is a hub of bustling activity, with a lot of wear and tear. Plus, both parents work full time. Kendra is a nurse at Cowell Family Cancer Center and her husband is an attorney. All of these important life details go into consideration when you analyze the busy flow, durability and floorplan of your home. You want to help make life easier and more functional, especially in a kitchen.

Next the choice of a designer to collaborate with. She confidently picked Paige Lee Interiors. “It was an easy decision to pick Paige, as we have already worked with her on a couple of projects and she was great,” Kendra said. They noodled on the ideas of what had to go, what to keep, and what was possible on Kendra’s wish list! “We wanted to make the island bigger and lighter. The black granite we had showed every mark made. It was constant work. I also wanted as much outside light as possible. We have a swimming pool that overlooks the woods, it’s the view from the kitchen window, but the wall cabinets on each side made it so dark.” The plan was to take out the wall making room for more windows. Kendra also decided they loved the brick so that was staying put.

“Plus, the brick was part

structural, so we had to work around it. It made some limitations as we had to keep the footprint of the original kitchen. It turned into a big project.” BEFORE

Putting the plan into action, involved completely gutting everything. “We even had new drywall,” Kendra said. In all, the project took 4 ½ months. The fact that their home has a wet bar in the basement became a lifesaver! “Considering we had no kitchen we got by ok. In the basement we have a mini fridge a microwave and a toaster oven. We also have a spare fridge in the garage. Thank goodness it wasn’t during COVID-19, because there was a lot of eating out too!”

On the finer details, they installed a striking hammered copper sink. “It wasn’t really a big deal, but my husband just loved it. It was actually a lot less work than I imagined, and it’s the first thing everyone comments on.” On the first glimpse of the finished kitchen, you may think they just opted to paint the original cabinets. But everything was installed brand new. The very last question we asked Kendra, why did you choose the color green? “We wanted something updated, but not too trendy and it had to go with the brick. Paige suggested it and assured us it was neutral. We are both Spartans too. (Go Michigan State) so that fits but that is not why we chose it.” Here is the funny thing, the second choice was blue. (Go Michigan).
