U Turns: When You Give A Child A Hockey Puck A View on Sports If you give a child a hockey puck, they will want a hockey stick to go with it.

You’ll buy them the best stick you can find, and then they will probably want a helmet, gloves, and skates to go with it.

Then, they will probably spend hours begging you to go outside in the driveway to play with them, even though you may want to sit on the couch and watch tv. They will insist. And their insistence will win.

Because you gave a child a hockey puck, you too will develop new/lifelong friendships, developed solely from the same passion for the game and love of your team. You will root together. And spew PG-13 things out of your mouths together.

Because you gave a child a hockey puck.

Then one day, many years from today, they will be in their room and a puck will roll out from an old dusty hockey bag underneath their bed. And they will pick it up and realize instantly that when you gave that child a hockey puck, you also gave them a childhood that they would never forget. And then they will hug you, and your eyes may leak – because you realize that everything YOU gave up along the way…..was worth it!

And when a child gets a jersey, they will need breezers and socks and suspenders to go with it. And a TEAM…..And then life as you know it will end.

There will be no more lazy weekends watching tv. You will see more sunrises than you ever thought possible. Every spare minute of your time will be spent hauling bags and stinky gear and crazy kids all over tarnation for hours to practice or a game.

THE GAME And your house will be a mess. And your car will be dirty. All because you gave a child a hockey puck.

Your weekends will be spent freezing in a hockey rink. And their weekends will be spent gaining confidence and friends, and learning new skills and having fun and getting sweaty. So sweaty in fact that you will have to learn how to do laundry in a whole new way, like maybe at a carwash using the pressure washer.

And you will be there the day they score their first goal, gets their first assist and kills a penalty by blocking shots. And they will make you SO proud. The other parents will congratulate you.

But you feel weird saying thank you because it’s not you on the ice or on the penalty kill. It’s them. They did this.

And right before your eyes, your little child will be transformed from the baby who spun around with their skates on the ice, (because they love attention), into one of the best hockey players you’ve ever seen.

When you give a child a hockey puck, you give them more than just a puck. You give them a sport, and talent, and hope, and dreams, and friends, a new family, a place to learn about life, room to grow as a person where they can push their limits, and bravery, and courage and LIFE, and memories. And they will have ALL of these things, simply because you gave a child a hockey puck.

Ed Docherty /Athlete – Karate A lifelong resident of Whitby, Ed Docherty began his karate training at the age of seven with the Whitby Chito-Ryu Karate School, then based at Iroquois Park, under the guidance of Art and Lori Bellhouse. Ed’s dad, George, joined that karate school just two weeks later, and this father-and-son duo would subsequently train together for many years.

Ed’s competitive karate career began at the youth level and continued through the junior elite and adult senior elite divisions. He became highly skilled in all core elements of his sport, including Kata (detailed pattern of movements practiced alone, commonly referred to as forms), Sundome Kumite (controlled-contact sparring), and Bogu Kumite (highimpact sparring with Japanese-style protective equipment). The depth and breadth of Ed’s talent and dedication to training led him to success at the provincial, national, and international levels.

He earned six Canadian National Championship (Karate Canada) medals in Kata and Kumite and he was the Ontario Provincial Karate Champion for five years (1993 kumite, 1996 kata, 1999 kata, 2001 kata, 2001 kumite). He qualified for the Ontario Provincial Karate team for 12 years and also qualified to represent Canada at the World Chito-Ryu Karate Championships (Soke Cup) on four occasions (1998, 2001, 2004, 2007). It was at these latter competitions featuring Bogu Kumite where Ed’s skills truly shone: • • • •

1998 (Canada): Bronze +75 kg Kumite and Bronze Team Kumite 2001 (Japan): Bronze +75 kg Kumite and Bronze Kata 2004 (Australia): Gold Team Kumite (first ever non-Japanese team to win gold) 2007 (Norway): Gold +75 kg Kumite (World Champion); Silver Team Kata; Silver Team Kumite

As a further testament to his overall ability in his chosen sport, Ed was named 2001 Karate Ontario Male Athlete of the Year; that same year, he was the recipient of the Karate Ontario Musoka Cup Sportsmanship Award. Ed was also awarded the Karate Ontario Carmen Forgioni Memorial Cup for 2005, and he was a four-time winner of the ChitoRyu Association of Ontario (CRAO) Tournament Excellence Award.

Gee Nash /Athlete – Lacrosse Whitby’s Gee Nash began his minor lacrosse career at a young age, and during those early years, he experienced a considerable resume of success that included five Ontario Lacrosse Association (OLA) championships from the Tyke through Midget age groups plus numerous Ontario Minor Field Lacrosse Association (OMFLA) titles.

His individual and team successes continued at the Junior A level, where he played a key role in leading the Whitby Warriors to Minto Cup national championships in 1997 and 1999; he also earned the Minto Cup MVP award in the 1999 series. During this same time, Gee was named co-winner of the Bob Melville Memorial Award on two occasions (1997 and 1998) in recognition of allowing the fewest goals against during the OLA Junior A season. Additionally, he was a member of the Canadian U-19 field lacrosse championship teams in both 1995 and 1996 and was selected as the All-Canadian goaltender for the 1995 tournament.

At the Senior A level, Gee played one season with the Burnaby Lakers (2000) before joining the Brooklin franchise for a further six seasons (2001-2006) in Major Series Lacrosse. In his tenure with Brooklin, he was a two-time co-winner of the OLA’s Harry Lumley Award for the fewest goals against in a season (2001 and 2003).

After retiring from competition, Ed coached for the Ontario Provincial Karate Team for seven years and was selected to be a Canadian National Junior Team Coach (Karate Canada) for the 2013 Junior Pan American Karate Championships held in Colombia. Ed is a 6th Dan Black Belt and Renshi (elite teaching designation) in traditional Chito-Ryu Karate-Do.

In 1999, Gee was a first round draft choice, second overall, of the National Lacrosse League (NLL) New York Saints in professional box (indoor) lacrosse. Over the course of his 10-year NLL career, Gee won two league championships (Colorado 2006 and Toronto 2011) and was chosen as NLL Goaltender of the Year in 2004. He was named a Second Team NLL All-Pro in 2003, a First Team NLL All-Pro in 2004, and he played in four NLL All-Star games, including two starting roles (2004 and 2008). The Colorado Mammoth organization honoured Gee as a member of its All-Decade Team in 2012.

In 2000, Ed opened his own Dojo in Whitby, the ICKF Karate School, where he passes along an enduring passion for Chito-Ryu Karate-Do to students of all ages. Ed continues to reside in Whitby with his wife Lee-Anne and their sons Brennan and Ciaran.

On the international stage, Gee represented Canada on two occasions, where his teams won a bronze medal at the 1996 U-19 World Field Lacrosse Games (Tokyo, Japan) and captured the gold medal at the 2007 World Indoor Lacrosse Games in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

No matter what your sport, when the season ends, the focus quickly shifts to preparing for what’s next. At this point, the next season may seem a long way off, but athletes who succeed at the top level don’t waste a second preparing for it.

The quality of every aspect of training and development is essential to energy management, no wasted days, no wasted reps, no wasted energy.

When it comes to making physical changes in strength, power, speed, athletic movement skills, and energy system conditioning, the off-season is shorter than you think. In most cases an annual training program that is adjusted and prioritized around seasonal sport schedules is the ideal way to maximize performance and continue to progress year after year. The best athletes at every level do not only train in the off-season, better has no off-season, and the best never miss an opportunity to get better, every day.

Foundations are Forever

Some players do like to take some time to relax, get their minds right, re-energize and recover from the season, others want to take advantage of the extra time available to prepare. There is no doubt that a seasonal, year-round strength and conditioning program can help maximize off-season preparation and allow for the most efficient development. Every athlete needs to evaluate their own individual needs, assess weak links, and determine what kind of plan is best.

The objective with strength training is not to build better squatters, dead lifters, bench pressers or Olympic Lifters but to utilize these foundational lifts mixed with more integrated, athletic strength training techniques, to develop speed, agility and quickness and to build the skills of balance, movement, and athletic strength to ultimately build better athletes.

If it could be done quickly, more people would do it.” - John Wooden A plan is a list of actions arranged in whatever sequence is thought likely to achieve an objective. Every team has one. Every coach has one. Every athlete needs one. Whether training on their own, with a teammate, with the team or with a strength and conditioning coach, every athlete needs a plan that fits their needs, this includes managing their schedule, sport skills development, school and overall energy demands. There is only so much time and energy available each day, each week, each season; prioritizing and organizing it all from a big-picture perspective will yield the best results.

The goal of developing a seasonal annual training plan is to take the emphasis off each induvial training phase to maximize development and give each athlete the tools to peak for the most important times of the season (playoffs, provincials, nationals etc.). Success is all about managing energy, efficient practice and training time, proper nutrition, rest, and recovery. A true annual development focus allows each phase of training to build into the next, each year of training to build into the next and each element of physical and technical development to build together to maximize each player’s health, fitness, and performance on and off the field, ice, court, diamond etc.

Improving overall fitness and conditioning builds a foundation for more sport specific training and intensity, but it is only the first step in an annual plan. Increasing stability and mobility, decreasing body fat, increasing strength and lean muscle mass, and elevating aerobic and anaerobic power are essential foundational fitness components that must be established before sport specialization can begin.

Athletic development is not about focusing on one specific area, it is the most successful when it considers the development of the complete athlete and the overall athletic engine. When it does, athletes can take advantage of this physical development and transfer these foundations into improving their specific sport skills. It can create a kind of chicken and the egg conundrum, too much time spent on skill development takes away opportunities to develop the physical strength and conditioning that can lead to improvements in skill.

True development focuses on the whole athlete. Mobility and stability build leverage and fluid movement. Strength fuels power and power is built on strength and speed. Coordination and deceleration control promote fluidity of movement, agility, quick changes of direction and shifting gears and speeds easily.

The more these athletic attributes can be developed together, the more easily the athlete can transfer them to sport success.

In a perfect world of athletic development, the off-season strength and conditioning program sets the table each year that will unveil itself as improved performance during the season. The Pre-season and in-season programs do their best to, not only, maintain this progress but working to peak during the competitive season while

Our genetics can certainly set the table for athletic success, but it is only part of the equation. It gives us the potential to be successful in a sport based on body size and/or shape but performance success is ultimately determined by the behaviours we take part in and by how well we manage interference and distractions that may get in the way. Athletic performance is maximized when obstacles and interference can be removed.

With every annual, seasonal S & C plan the ultimate objective is to help each athlete reach their performance goals and to help them learn to work hard, work smart, become better athletes, and better teammates.

Every athlete needs a plan that fits their needs, fits their schedule, and is aimed toward their goals. The ultimate objective is to create consistency and continue to learn, progress and improve in order to become better players, athletes and better teammates.

Athletes adapt to training when they are subjected to different kinds of overload that match their specific goals. For strength & power development this can be increasing the loads (lifting more), adjusting the tempo/speed of the movements, and/adjusting the volume (sets, reps, training frequency and time).

Getting faster is not just about going faster. Getting stronger is not just about lifting more weight. Getting better is not just about training hard, it is about training smart and understanding what the best plan is for you, for your age, your sport, for your position, and for your long-term development. Putting together a challenging workout is easy; putting together a long-term athlete development plan takes knowledge, experience and skill.

The goal of developing an annual training plan is to take the emphasis off each induvial training phase to maximize development and give the athletes the tools to peak for the most important times of the season (playoffs, provincials, nationals etc.).

Success for lacrosse players is all about managing energy, putting in efficient practice and training time, ensuring proper nutrition, rest, and recovery. A true development focus allows each phase of training to build into the next, each year of training to build into the next and each element of physical and technical development to build together to maximize each player’s health, fitness, and performance on and off the field.

It should be constantly assessed, updated, and progressed or regressed to meet the needs of the athlete, address changes in performance, adapt to new injuries and issues that occur along the way.

The off season starts slowly but goes by quickly. An annual, seasonal plan takes the pressure and urgency away from the offseason focus and balances the plan throughout the year, based on consistency, good habits and better choices. WHAT IS RINGETTE?

Ringette is a girls’ non-contact winter team sport played on an ice rink using, ice hockey skates, straight sticks with drag-tips and a blue, rubber, pneumatic ring designed for use on ice surfaces.

Ringette is the last team sport in history to have been created exclusively for the female sex and is one of the most popular team sports for females in Canada where its registration rates continue to climb, reaching an all-time high in 2018.

Though similar in appearance, ringette is not a variant of ice hockey.

The Whitby Ringette Association has a lot to celebrate. We are finally back on the ice enjoying the sport they love after a long Covid-19 break. In spite of this break, the WRA has seen it’s best growth in membership in 10 years! The Whitby Wild ringette teams engage the players and their families throughout the ranks to help support all association activities including fundraising, tournaments, etc.

By Total Sports Durham We caught up with Kris Handson, Owner of Progression Skateboard Co. to find out more about this great sport in Durham.

TSD: How did you first get into skateboarding? Who were some of your influences?

Kris: I started Skateboarding when I was 7 years old. I remember getting a Blind complete from my parents for Christmas, it came in a Blind stocking big enough to fit the entire board. It was dope.

Since growing up, influences have definitely been friends because at the end of the day they play a huge role in helping motivate you, help you learn, and keep you progressing. Other than my friends over the years, my biggest influences are without a doubt TJ Rogers, Mikey Taylor, Paul Rodriguez, and Joey “Coco” Diaz. They all play a big part in keeping me motivated and inspired.

TSD: What is the skateboarding scene like in Durham Region?

Has this changed since you first started skateboarding?

Kris: The Skateboarding scene in Durham is actually pretty dope.

There are a lot of skaters out here, and every year I see plenty of new faces in the area. It’s rad to see the sport growing around here yearly. The sad part is that there are rarely any contests/events.

Back in the day there used to be plenty of contests and events but over the years they started fading away. It would be really cool to see contests start coming back in the future, maybe we will have to look into doing something with that.

TSD: We know that you have recently started an initiative to get an indoor park built in Durham Region. What prompted this project and how are things going?

Kris: A couple years ago, I started a petition to get an indoor Skatepark in Durham Region. Around us there are only 2 indoor Skateparks and they are in both Scarborough and Mississauga. For the youth, people without licenses or cars, this is obviously a huge issue. Anyways, this is something that myself and 1500+ others think the city should provide for the community. The amount of “mainstream” sports that are catered to is excellent and all, but a lot of the sports that are currently catered to all have indoor places to go in the winter such as Basketball, Hockey, Lacrosse, Volleyball, etc. However, Skateboarding isn’t really looked at by the City. I have spoken to the City of Oshawa for many months on and off since the petition launched, as well as the City of Whitby and hundreds of emails and phone calls to other surrounding cities in Durham. The City of Whitby is not interested in helping further the process, and the City of Oshawa ignores every email and phone call I send them now (goes to show how much they care about community improvement and feedback). It really is a shame to see that the Cities do not want to organize something after all of our previous discussions. Believe it or not, there are also a few Skaters who are actually against this petition (for some reason?) and claim that I am begging them to do this rather than what I am actually doing; speaking on behalf of the thousands of Skateboarders in Durham Region who agree that there is an absolute need for an

I have gotten this campaign featured in multiple online articles, newspapers, Global News Durham, and even classes in school handing out assignments on the topics. I am still determined to further this campaign’s reach even if we have to take it up a notch.

TSD: How did Progression Skateboards start and what kinds of products do you have?

Kris: I started my company Progression Skateboard Co. back in 2018. The reason I started this company was because I have always dabbled in Skateboarding, but in 2018 I started really progressing more than ever before. I felt really good to start learning new tricks and getting more comfortable on my board, and I wanted to create a brand that everybody can relate to if they have ever stuck with a passion. A lot of the inspiration for Progression Skateboard Co. came from my high school “Urban Art” class. I took that class at least 5 times throughout high school. This class was all about the history of street art, graffiti and at the end of the semester our teacher would let us create our own T-Shirt and Skateboard design and actually let us make our own mock skateboard companies.

We would get to silk screen our own shirts and paint our boards to pretty much whatever we wanted, the creativity was limitless. I never created PSC back in high school, but the two ideas definitely fused together in 2018. Since the start of my brand almost 4 years ago, we have sold and shipped product to individuals and skate shops all across Canada, all over the USA, and even out in Europe (France, Russia, Germany, etc). I have been fortunate enough to collaborate with a multi-platinum Hip Hop group named Onyx, hosted numerous giveaways to the local Skateboarding community, sponsored contests, and was also invited to be VIP and a product toss participant to the world famous Tampa Pro event. Currently, we carry all types of clothing such as beanies, snapbacks, T-shirts, long sleeves, hoodies, and this fall I will be dropping track pants.

Hardgoods wise I carry Skateboards and griptape, but I hope to expand to hardware and wheels on a larger scale in the future.

TSD: What does the future look like for Progression?

Kris: The future for Progression Skateboard Co. is surely bright, and I say that humbly. At the time of typing these answers, I am preparing for my trip to LA in a couple months. I have spoken to a few known dudes from the industry and they are down to meet up, so I will get to pick their brain and talk about entrepreneurship (super excited for that). I plan on having my product featured in more shops around the world and really start showing people that the quality products I produce will be around for a very long time. My next big goal is to be a big name sponsor of bigger Skateboarding contests, and try and get into the industry spotlight eventually. I’m the kind of guy who definitely plans things out carefully, but I am more of a day by day thinker. Long term thinking can always change at the blink of an eye and throw plans off, so as the only one behind my company, I like to take things one step at a time and go at a steady pace, while also working towards my goals.

It is important for parents to know that the desired hockey sticks of today are made of high-quality expensive materials. The primary purpose of this is creating lightweight sticks with unbelievable performance capabilities, whereas heavier, less expensive sticks are typically much more durable. It is entirely understandable that your son/daughter would want a high-quality stick but making smart decisions about buying is key to keeping your hockey stick budget under control! Below is a quick snapshot of what parents and players should know; 1. Basic Sizing | Sticks are conveniently broken down into size classifications such as Youth, Junior, Intermediate, and Senior. As they progress, the flex rating increases, and the shaft and blade get bigger accordingly. Start by looking at sticks with a flex rating of approx. half your child’s body weight, then make sure it is tall enough to reach his/her nose when standing flat footed without skates. If you do not buy within the correct size parameters you will not be getting the top end performance that you have paid for, regardless of the overall quality or how recent the stick is.

However, one size does not fit all, players that are taller, play frequently, and / or like taking slap shots might find a slightly stiffer flex to be beneficial whereas shorter players and / or kids that take more quick release shots may opt for a flex rating a little below half their body weight.

2. Quality | The difference between a performance stick and discount models will make a bigger impact than you might think.

I have heard from hundreds of people that are shocked at how much of an impact a high-quality stick had on their game. Here are some key pre-ice identifiers of a quality hockey stick: •

The Feel | Most brands will have three different price points on similar looking sticks. The difference is the materials used and the weight. Typically the lighter the stick the higher the quality, but even more important is that the weight is evenly distributed (lower end sticks tend to have heavy blades and

This isn’t always something that you will be able to tell by picking up a stick, so it is important to do your research beforehand.

3. Pattern | Choosing the correct curve is so much easier than it ever used to be. Though lots of pros use custom curves, there are only a few different options at the retail level now; they come with a standard lie angle, and all brands offer roughly the same curves. What’s important is that you find the curve you think is best for your game and stick to it. I have used the same curve for 20 years and it just so happens to be by far the most popular pattern in hockey now at every level from Pro, College, to Junior and in stores. If you’re not sure I always recommend the Blade 1 Pattern (Bauer P92, CCM P29, True TC2, Warrior W03). If you find that your kid’s shots are getting up too high you may want to try what we call Blade 2 (Bauer P88, CCM P80, True MC, Warrior W88).

For the danglers of the world, our Blade 6 (Bauer P28, CCM P28, True TC4, Warrior W28) has emerged as a popular option for those focused on stickhandling.

4. The Stick | Once you know the correct size, quality and pattern for you then it is time to select a stick. In the first few years of hockey it won’t make a lot of difference. They must learn the game and how to shoot before they can really get much of a performance boost from any stick, no matter the price point.

Many of your sons and daughters will be influenced by what the top players in the NHL or what other kids on their team are using. Being a father myself I understand the urge to buy exactly what they want, and although its often expensive, a top-quality stick that will likely last them the whole year may be worth it. If they aren’t picky about the make and model, you can often find a high-end stick on sale that is a year or two older This is usually a great option as the technology doesn’t change massively year to year and as long as they are stored properly, sticks do not suffer at all by sitting on the shelf. The biggest issue is that as kids grow stronger, they begin to break their sticks more often, which parents, Junior, College and even pro teams can find difficult to pay for. At this point, many parents start to look for solutions that still meet the first three criteria outlined, but perhaps with more flexibility on different makes and models. In fact, as players make it onto higher level teams that supply sticks for them, there are often limitations on what they can use until the time they make it to the NHL.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN CHOOSING A SUMMER HOCKEY CAMP

By Mary Giacalone “Scary Mary” Head Instructor/Owner of Scary Skate Inc. Well winter is almost over and spring/summer is on its way. That means that many hockey parents are starting to look at summer hockey camps. Whether your child is a first time camper or a seasoned veteran, there are a lot of factors to think about when registering your son/daughter in summer hockey camps. So before you fill out the registration forms, here are eight things to think about when choosing a hockey camp:

1. Activities

From half day to full day to week long, hockey camps should have other sports and activities included in the agenda. Camps these days have activities galore, and with each of these activities comes the opportunity for your son/daughter to gain new skills, If your son/daughter is highly interested in working on a specific skill or activity, and then a specialty camp might be a good fit for them. There are great power skating camps, stickhandling, camps, defensemen camps, and goaltending camps. Camp activities are as diverse and unique as the very campers that attend camp, so be sure to find a camp that offers activities that appeal to your camper.

2. Location

The hockey camp community is forever growing and expanding, which means you can find summer camps located in every city in Durham Region. With so many camps out there, there are likely several camps to choose from within a reasonable distance from where you live. On hot summer days, are there water activities or air conditioning to keep the kids cool? If the camp has a lot of rain days, how are activities modified to keep kids safe and dry? Ask the questions.

3. Session Lengths

Looking for a camp that offers week long sessions? Or is your son/ daughter interested in spending the whole summer at different hockey camps? Each camp’s session lengths vary, so make sure the camp you are interested in offers sessions that fit into your summer plans. Nervous campers might opt for a shorter stay like a half day camp, while the more independent camper might prefer a full day hockey camp that offers 2-3 weeks. Either way, don’t be surprised when your son/daughter has such a great time at camp that they aren’t ready to come home at the end the day.

4. Staff to Skater Ratios

Hockey camp is a great place for the kids to build independence and get a great taste of freedom, but the concern on every parent’s mind is safety. The amount of supervision provided varies from camp to camp.

-Some camps allow campers to enjoy unsupervised time while other camps require constant direct supervision. Ask about staff-to-player ratios. Really good full day hockey camps should always have a ratio of 5-6 skaters to every instructor. This is super important for correction and detection on and off the ice.

5. Food Food is a highly important part of day to day life, and meal times play an equally important role in the camp setting. Does the camp take peanut allergies or any food allergies seriously? Do they make sure that the camp is nut free? Do they respect kids that are vegan, eat gluten free? If your son/daughter has any dietary concerns or food allergies, be sure to ask about any meals that are provided to the kids from the camp for your son/daughters safety.

6. Medical Resources

When your kids are at a camp all day, you hope that they will never need to seek out medical attention, but kids will be kids and accidents do happen. In case an illness or injury does arise, you will want to know how medical situations are handled and who cares for kids who run into medical problems. Does the camp have a trainer or coach who has medical training?

7. Staff Hiring and Training

Knowing how the on/off ice instructors of a hockey camp are hired and trained is important when choosing a camp. Your son/daughters instructor/counselor will likely become their next role model and best friend, so you might want to look into where the counselors come from. At Scary Skate in our specialized hockey clinics and camps we only hire trained instructors.

8. Price

You don’t need to break the bank to give your child an amazing summer hockey camp. A huge price tag doesn’t necessarily mean a better camp experience, so think about what you are willing to spend before you start shopping around.

Although spring/summer is still a distant thought, it is never too early to start planning an unforgettable experience for your kids. No matter what hockey camp you choose, your son/daughter will get a chance to challenge themselves, develop independence, and make countless new friends. While finding the right camp might be a challenging process, seeing the smile on your child’s face when they return home from camp will make the time and money spent so worth it.

The right hockey camp for your son/daughter is out there- time to kick the summer planning into gear and get ready for a great summer at hockey camp!

OKANAGAN HOCKEY Gets an A+ in Student Athlete Education

Student-athletes who are playing hockey, or any sport, at an elite level have a rigorous training and game schedule which can be challenging to balance with education. At OHO, the hockey staff works very closely with the educational advisors and teachers to ensure that their players can commit to the busy hockey schedule without compromising the players’ education.

The players at OHO attend Henry Street High School which is very close in proximity to Iroquois Park making it convenient for the players to travel between the two buildings. The two main positive aspects of the Okanagan program is one, the players have their practices and workouts during the school day and games on weekends which leaves more time to balance their hockey/school schedules and time after school for homework.

The second is the amount of support they receive academically from the Okanagan staff. They put academics first, so if a player falls behind or isn’t doing well, they work with the guidance staff at Henry Street to find out why and what the player needs to improve. It could be as simple as missing practice one day to complete an assignment, or OHO arranges study hall sessions after school for the players, or even support finding a tutor if needed.

All the student athletes are supported in their work by the guidance staff at Henry Street, their teachers and OHO staff.

Teachers provide extra help sessions for all students which they attend when needed. OHO staff also hold study hall sessions when they are travelling to make sure they are completing their work.

With all the support, the players do very well. They are on a variety of pathways and are motivated and focussed on whatever post-secondary path they have chosen. Many work towards keeping NCAA as an option so they plan that with them, as well as any other options they are considering. Graduating players have gone to the NCAA, Canadian University/College and Junior hockey.

With a lot of junior hockey programs, players have to move away and live with billets and when the season ends in the spring, the players have to transition back home and to their home schools halfway through a semester. This can be difficult, especially when the player is in grade 12. At OHO the players finish the school year at Henry Street and continue training with Okanagan. The Okanagan program runs for 10 months in line with the school year.

Today’s newsletter feels like a new beginning, as we are excited to share that our 2022 registration is now open and live for all our programs, and this coming Sunday we will be starting our indoor sessions. We will keep moving in the correct direction, this will allow us to continue indoor training each Sunday afternoon and we will reopen the clubhouse for March 19th. Things look promising for an exciting 2022 season of Wanderers Rugby our 73rd season. We will be ensuring that we outline a summer full of not only rugby programs but many events for all our members to reengage actively with your rugby club. Watch for our annual Family Day, Golf Tourney, and many home games to mark on your calendars.

This summer we will be looking to begin a weekly Thursday club evening, idea here will be to make this an evening of rugby for our youngest of members to train, our Seniors to train and with hopes of our older/alumni or new players to participate in a weekly flag/ touch rugby evening. With of course the deck/bar open for all to enjoy a weekly summer evening at the clubhouse with friends and family.

More on the events will come, but today we focus on our Indoor sessions beginning.

Why this day? it will be super Saturday of the 2022 Six NATIONS rugby/ Toronto Arrows in action also, what better way to get members back to the clubhouse.

We will continue to keep the communication going as we are working at moving the Wanderers towards our 73rd year in 2022.
