How long have you lived in Herne Bay? 12 years, I’m a Londoner and still love London but living by the sea has its own gratification, especially when the sun finally comes out and you come home from work and your dinner is a BBQ on the beach! So, you’ve worked on Star Wars movies, tell us more? I had been working as a prop maker for a while and a friend of mine got the job of running the model and props workshop on the Phantom Menace and employed me. As a big Star Wars fan it was exciting, but ultimately, disappointing when I saw the finished film. Best Geeky moment was getting the original moulds from Empire Strikes Back that had been sent over from the Ranch in California and I had to take a cast out of them, so Yoda’s stick, parts of R2-D2 and Jawa guns. Similar to touching the holy grail for a mould maker, that and meeting Kenny Baker, what a cool guy. So you're a big Sci-Fi Fan then? I’m a big film fan and my dad let us watch all the amazing classic 1950s Sci-Fi films from a young age, so films like Forbidden Planet and The Day the Earth Stood Still, but I can still remember (as can most men of my age) sitting in the cinema as the brilliant John Williams, Star Wars theme music started, then when that spaceship comes over it was a game changer. I still get goosebumps when I hear that music. What’s your favourite Sci-Fi? So many to choose from and I could easily pick my favourite ten, but my favourite Sci-Fi film is Blade Runner. Ridley Scott set the design for almost every Sci-Fi film that came after it and Rutger Hauer’s speech at the end is inspired.. “I've seen things you people wouldn't believe”.

DAVID ALDRIDGE How long have you lived in Herne Bay? I’ve lived in Herne Bay for eight years, I was born in Ealing, West London and then schooled in Dover, where I grew up.

You run Empire Costuming Group, what do they do? Empire Costuming Group was set up to provide a charity based costuming group within the south east to provide fun for like-minded individuals who can share their love of all things Sci-Fi and help each other with costume creations and to collect funds for charities. How long have you been attending Sci-Fi events? My partner, of eight years, Clare has been involved with fundraising for charity through costuming for many years, since I’ve gradually become more involved. Tell us about your Dalek. My Dalek was born around three years ago. I had been to many events with Clare and spent most of the time standing in the sidelines, as I didn’t want to wear a costume, but in July 2010 I met a Dalek builder at a convention

and was inspired to get one built. I acquired the shoulder and dome section from him (in exchange for some electric wheelchair motors) and then a family friend built the rest from original plans that the BBC published many years ago. The final parts were the guns and hemispheres, which were finished by a local chap called Jason Onion and painted by a local paint sprayer. I sorted the power plant, electrics, water gun and odds and ends out with a lot of small upgrades to bring it to the final stage it is at today. We registered it with DVLA to make her the only road-legal Dalek in the UK! What’s your favourite Sci-Fi? That’s a hard one. Apart from Dr Who, I have a soft spot for the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and obviously Star Wars. Blake’s 7 was brilliant and I watched Star Trek too.

Michael Henbury Ken Coombs ichael is credited as being Britain's smallest man, at 2ft 11 inches, and has appeared in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi as an Ewok. Other notable appearances include a village person in Willow, a Goblin in Labyrinth and a Hedgehog in the TV Series of Narnia. In recent times, Michael played a Greengott in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two.

I

’ve lived in Herne Bay for three years now. After being offered a choice of jobs in Nottingham or Gillingham three years ago, I found Herne Bay (having never heard of it before) and fell in love with it straight away. The choice was a no-brainer! I fell in love with Star Wars when it was released in 1977 and loved C-3PO and R2 as a kid – they are Star Wars icons! I joined the 501st as a Storm Trooper ten years ago and decided to have a go at my favourite, C-3PO. It was the first wearable Threepio in the UK for quite a few years. After finding a guy who made a fullsize static model in America, I had a set of ABS pulls sent over. I had to convert the whole thing to make it wearable and also fit me. It took approximately one year to complete. Once I'd finished C-3PO I decided to go for R2. Every time I walk into my spare room and see them staring back at me I still think “That is soooo cool!” Do you belong to a costuming group? Yes, I belong to the UK Garrison. Would you call it a hobby? Definitely a hobby! Since starting my new job three years ago I don't get a lot of time to costume, weekends are now spent playing on the coast. What’s your favourite Sci-Fi film? It has to be the one that got me hooked, Star Wars A New Hope, closely followed by Avatar. What about C-3PO toilet breaks? No! It takes 20 minutes to get out of the suit with some help.

Brian Wheeler e has appeared in many films such as Phantom of the Opera, Return of the Jedi, The Neverending Story, Wagner's Life Story and many others. His television appearances include When The Lights Go Out, The South Bank Show, The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, Cymbeline, Little and Large Show and Saturday Night Live, to name but a few.

H

Barrie Holland arrie has appeared in Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Monster Club, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Morons from Outer Space, White Knight, D.A.R.Y.L, Superman IV, Batman, Moonraker and many, many others.

Colin Baker INSIDE THE MIND OF DOCTOR WHO What did you most enjoy about Dr Who? Just knowing that I was making so many people happy watching their favourite programme. Who is your favourite Doctor? Patrick Troughton. He had the hard job of establishing the first regeneration and did it superbly, thereby opening the programme up for the rest of us. If you had the Tardis back and had one more trip left, where would you go and when? Back to the beginning of my time as the Doctor and do it all again. Your Doctor loved cats, do you have any pets? Cats, dogs, horses, goats, chickens and guinea pigs. What’s your favourite drink? Champagne!

o date, Colin Baker is the only actor to have played the Doctor who has previously played a role in the TV series. Colin's association with Doctor Who began in 1983 when he played Commander Maxil, a Gallifreyan guard who shoots the fifth Doctor, playing opposite Peter Davison in Arc of Infinity. Colin made a big impression on his fellow cast and the producer of the programme. However, little did Colin know that circumstance would put him in the driver’s seat in just a few short months’ time. Colin was cast as the sixth BBC Doctor Who by producer John Nathan-Turner in late 1983. It was to be a role that would make Colin's face recognisable all over the world.

T

During the three years that he was The Doctor, Colin battled Cybermen, Daleks, Sontarans, Sil and even Kate O'Mara. His interpretation of the Time Lord was brash, loud, opinionated and didn't suffer fools gladly. (Wonder why JNT thought of Colin…?) Colin's tenure turned out to be the most turbulent period in the programme’s long history, with an 18 month hiatus followed by Michael Grade instructing that Colin be replaced as the Doctor after only two seasons on screen. However, during his short stay on TV, the sixth Doctor gathered many admirers and fans around the world were upset at Colin's treatment by the BBC, feeling that he had been made a scapegoat for the show's troubles.

Much to his credit Colin never turned his back on Doctor Who and reprised the role on stage in 1989 during the tour of Doctor Who: The Ultimate Adventure and on television during the 1993 Children In Need sketch Dimensions in Time. Colin has been a regular, and much in demand, guest at Doctor Who conventions around the world. Indeed, in 2002 Colin returned as the Doctor in a special BBC broadcast entitled Real Time by Gary Russell which saw the sixth Doctor and Evelyn battling the Cybermen. We would need a Tardis to know if Colin will ever play the role again on television as a guest appearance, but we certainly hope we have not seen the last of the amazing multicoloured techno timecoat.

A

nthony Coburn, a writer and Herne Bay resident, who wrote the script for the first Doctor Who episodes, ‘An unearthly child’, which was broadcast in four weekly parts from 23 November to 14 December 1963, starring William Hartnall. Local prop-maker, Jason Onion, recently discovered scripts from never-seen episodes, while researching the town’s links with the series. The works had laid undiscovered in a box of Anthony Coburn’s paperwork. Mr Coburn had also devised the concept of the Tardis at his Herne Bay home after seeing a police box near BBC headquarters. Jason initially didn’t realise their significance and believed they were from the first four episodes, screened in 1963. He said: “With the consent of Anthony’s wife, Joan CoburnMoon, and other family members, the family lent me a box of his work and I saw the scripts, but put them to one side. When I scanned the cover later I realised it didn’t have the right title for the first episode. “I had a look and as soon as I saw the first few pages I knew it was not the episode that had been televised.” The scripts were early drafts

for the first episodes – the collection includes two versions of the first episode and an alternative episode two, and another three scripts as well as the Masters of Luxor stories, which were replaced by the original Dalek serial. Mr Coburn had rewritten them after he felt the background would not fit with the first four episodes. Jason said: “You can see that the template for the Daleks came from Anthony. You can see in these episodes a device to unlock the Tardis, which became the sonic screwdriver, and the science and regeneration and renewal of the body, which were all created in Anthony ’s mind. The drafts explain the mystery of Doctor Who, his origins, and all the background. “It explains the Tardis’s original name, the planet Doctor Who came from and that his granddaughter – Susan in the programmes, but Suzanne in the scripts – was a princess saved from another world. “He created the cornerstones of Doctor Who that have been expanded and built on ever since. It was all devised in Herne Bay, and he should never have been forgotten like he has.”

JASON ONION How long have you lived in Herne Bay? Most of my life. I spent about four years living in Cornwall and then moved back to Herne Bay. What got you into Doctor Who? It was 1979, I was three years old and my parents let me watch it. My mum thought I’d be too scared and I was! The episode was City of Death, with an alien disguised as a human that peeled its skin off to reveal a Scaroth, made of brown worms with a single eye in centre its face. I shot backwards eight feet and hid behind sofa in true Dr Who style. I was scared, intrigued and hooked! So you make Tardises? In 1997 on a whim, I managed to get a licence with BBC Enterprises to make official Dr Who wall clocks based on the Paul McCann movie. Fast forward to three years ago and I started to make full-size official Tardis replicas out of reclaimed oak and reclaimed pine for a BBC licenced company. Is it a hobby or a calling? A bit of both, it started as a hobby. I feel there’s a weird irony, I make official Tardises in the same town it was created. Bizarre and nice at the same time. What’s your favourite Sci-Fi film? Dr Who! As I’ve got older, I’m really into old school Sci-Fi from the 1920s and 1930s. I love Blade Runner, The Thing, The Day the Earth Stood Still and Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds.

Laurie Goode Chris Muncke aurie has been in the business for nigh on 40 years, starting out as a musician and falling into film work by chance. Laurie has certainly made the best of it and has appeared in many great films and TV programmes, including Star Wars, Episode 1: A New Hope, playing not one, but three different characters. He played a Stormtrooper, the reptilian character in the Cantina called a Saurin and an X-Wing pilot in the briefing room scene. Laurie has also appeared in many TV shows over the years.

hris was born in Chicago, USA and first moved to Berkely, California to attend university, where he earned his degree in drama. He and his wife then moved to England. In 1971, Chris became a permanent resident in the UK and was allowed to work professionally as an actor. Chris became part of the group of several American actors living and working in London, who became good friends and frequently appeared together. Herne Bay Sci-Fi Heroes MICHAEL LAKE

I

t was a chance meeting with Michael late last year that planted the seed with BayPromoTeamto put on a Sci-Fi event of its own in the town. A couple of members of the team had heard that Michael had created his own Predator costume and popped up to Michael’s home to see it. However, what they found was an Aladdin's cave of high-spec Sci-Fi creations, that Michael had produced, using everything from cornflake boxes to rubber piping. As they passed R2D2 and a clone battle droid in his lounge, Michael showed them a full size speeder bike and ED209 from the film Robocop. Michael's son, Luke (yes, we know!) had asked for an X-Wing Star Wars helmet to be made when he was nine years old. Fast forward a few months later and Michael had not only built the helmet for his son but he had also created a full size X-Wing fighter to go with it! Encouraged by Michael's impressive collection and connections with several other Sci-Fi enthusiasts in the town the team thought, “Let's do it!” and Sci-Fi by the Sea was born. We extend our thanks to Michael for inspiring the whole event!

PAUL MARKHAM aul appeared in Star Wars: Episode 6, Return of the Jedi in the landing bay, when Vader marched on deck. He is one of a vanishing roll-call of Imperial Officers and is highly sought after for that very reason. Paul appeared in Superman in 1985, Young Sherlock in 1985 and Batman in 1989. Other high profile pictures include Lost in Space and Fifth Element. Paul also appeared in Labyrinth, Willow, Indiana Jones as a passenger at the airport, Young Indiana Jones, Sharpe's Rifles and more recently The Invention of Hugo Cabret at Shepperton Studios. Paul has signed in Europe as well as in the UK, but is still a name missing from collections!
