Naylin Appanna Womens

Health Centre

Dr Naylin Appanna MBChB (Natal), Dip O&G (Otago), FRANZ COG

D

r Naylin Appanna is a leading Gynaecological Keyhole Surgeon (Laparoscopic Surgeon) who has been performing advanced Laparoscopic Surgery in Hamilton since 1996 and for 3 years in England prior to this. Naylin did his basic training in South Africa, going on to a Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Otago, before completing his specialist training in New Zealand. He then worked at the Musgrove Park Hospital, Ryde Hospitals and the Royal Sussex County and Brighton General Hospitals in England. During this time, in the early 1990’s, he attended Advanced Laparoscopic Courses at the Leeds Institute of Minimally invasive surgery as well as Hamburg and started performing advanced Keyhole procedures well before most other gynaecologists had contemplated Laparoscopic Surgery. Naylin Appanna returned to New Zealand in 1996 and has been working as a private gynaecologist specialist at the Womens Health Centre; a private practice in Hamilton, with clinics in Tauranga and other locations throughout the Waikato. Not content with his surgical skills, Naylin has attended further courses in Laparoscopic Surgery including

the Minims course in Brisbane and mentored other specialists in learning laparoscopic surgical techniques. Dr Appanna understands the full advantages of Laparoscopic surgery and the benefi ts for his patients. Also called minimally invasive surgery (MIS) or keyhole surgery, this modern surgical technique in which operations in the abdomen are performed through small incisions (usually 0.5–1.5 cm) as opposed to the larger incisions means reduced pain, less risk of haemorrhaging and a shorter recovery time. Being the most advanced Laparoscopic gynaecological surgeon in Tauranga, Dr Appanna is the fi rst and foremost for many women in the Bay.

They work hard to provide the continuity of care throughout your visits; you will see the same doctor, nurse and even the same receptionist as much as possible. Like any great care providers they want you to feel and be as comfortable as possible. Naylin has also created a series of information and educational videos for patients that cover serveral gynaecological conditions are are easy to understand. These can be viewed at www.obgyn.co.nz As Dr Appanna is a solely private gynaecologist, you are usually able to be seen within

a week and the surgery waiting list are no more than six weeks long even shorter at times. A referral from your Family Doctor is desirable but not absolutely necessary.

Dr Naylin Appanna is a current member of the following professional bodies: Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Member of the Australasian Gynaecological Endoscopy Society

Being predominately based in Hamilton, Dr Appanna identifi ed a gap in the services available to the women in Tauranga and now continues to conduct a clinic at 49 Fraser Street every 2nd week to cater to new and existing patients. Dr Appanna and his team at the Womens Health Centre pride themselves on delivering exceptional care and understanding of the issues facing patients.

he purpose of the ReStore, 52 Second Ave, Tauranga is to raise funds for the Habitat for Humanity Tauranga Housing Programme. Habitat for Humanity helps those who can’t necessarily afford a house. Building more homes is a priority as Tauranga has a waiting list at any one time of between 10 and 50 applicants. If you know of a family that needs a break from: unaffordable rent: sub-standard conditions: overcrowding: poor budgeting: resultant stress – we may be able to help

Expert

Skin Cancer Treatment

S

hould you be diagnosed with skin cancer, achieving optimal results will be front of mind and should include consideration of the best aesthetic outcome. Skin cancers are classified into two groups – melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers. Melanoma is the most serious skin cancer and the cause of the majority of skin cancer deaths. To put it into perspective, about as many New Zealanders die each year from melanoma as die on our roads. However, skin cancer is just as preventable as road deaths, if not more so. This is why the message to have your skin checked annually and if you notice any changes, is so often repeated. From detection, diagnosis and treatment, choosing to see a cosmetic plastic surgeon who is extensively trained in the artistry of reconstruction is a choice you have here in Tauranga. Reconstructive surgery refers to surgery performed by plastic surgeons, who receive upwards of 12 years of training in their field. It is surgery usually performed to improve the aesthetics and functionalities of injuries received in an accident or through cancer and other diseases. Cosmetic surgery is performed in order to correct or enhance appearance which people – both men and women - are not comfortable with for many and varied reasons. Choose your medical professional wisely. Extreme care must be taken in selecting the best qualified medical specialist to provide the safest, most skilled procedure and provide you, the patient, with optimal results. As a New Zealand trained Plastic Surgeon, around fifty percent of Mr Adam Bialostocki’s work is concerned with skin cancer, from the most minor to the most severe cases. His

private practice, Bay Plastic Surgery, is based from the discreet and convenient location of the Da Vinci Clinic where Mr Bialostocki is a member of a team of specialist doctors concerned with the care of skin health. Mr Bialostocki also performs sentinel node biopsies, a method used to determine whether cancer

has metastasized (spread) beyond the primary tumour or cancer site and into the lymph system. Once a melanoma is diagnosed and its thickness determined, this next step in the treatment of this serious skin cancer is used as an important guide for deciding if complete lymph nod e removal is necessary.

or many who live alone, it helps to know that in a medical emergency help can be a touch of a button away. And now, there’s even more support for those who need it. Medical alarms help thousands of New Zealanders to live safely and independently at home without the worry of getting to a phone to dial 111 in an emergency. This support can be vital, especially for those who live alone. If they suffer a fall, an accident or medical emergency, simply pressing the button on their wristband or pendant sends a signal that they’re in trouble and need help. If they have a St John medical alarm,

the signal goes straight to St John, which for many using the service is an important benefit.

Bay Trust

B

ay of Plenty Community Trust (BayTrust) was formed in 1988 from the proceeds of the sale of Trust Bank Bay of Plenty. The purpose of the Trust is to provide charitable, cultural, philanthropic, recreational and other benefits to Bay of Plenty communities. After a strategic refresh in early 2015, ensuring the “Bay of Plenty is the greatest place to be” is the organisation’s new vision. Desired outcomes include: strengthened whanau; stronger community leadership; enhanced environmental sustainability; stronger community organisations; fun, vibrant communities; transformational social innovation; and sustainable community housing. Last year a total of 157 Bay of Plenty community organisations received grants from BayTrust to help cover their operational costs or fund other specific initiatives. BayTrust also provides other measures to support and build the capacity of local organisations, these include capacity building, research, marketing, social loans and investments and more. To find out more ways that BayTrust may be able to help, you can visit the BayTrust website. Chief Executive Alastair Rhodes says BayTrust’s asset base has grown from $89m when it was first established in 1988 to $193m as at the end of March 2015, with investment returns over 10 per cent being achieved in the last three years.

“Thanks to wise and prudent investment decisions made by our Trustees, Our increased reserves and strong financial position will allow us to confidently increase our granting from $3m last year to $5m annually, equating to $10m of additional funding being available over the next five years,” Mr Rhodes says. To see a full copy of BayTrust’s 2015 annual report and its new strategy, or to learn about the grant application process, please visit www.baytrust.org.nz.

Avalon – so much more than

a disability service!

A

valon (BOP) Incorporated, currently based in Te Puna, Tauranga, is a vocational service that supports individuals with disability to live everyday lives in every day places. Committed to the philosophy of supporting individuals to live meaningful lives with value, in their own communities, Avalon is moving forward into a dynamic and collaborative future. Traditionally Avalon has provided a programmed based service to a large group of individuals in a segregated environment. Following an extensive strategic review during the past year, the Avalon organisation is changing to a person-centred facilitated service, moving into Tauranga central with a satellite at Katikati in October 2015. Our new model of service places the individual and their aspirations at the centre.

Engaging and working together with whanau, friends, support services, volunteers and peers, we are able to support to the individual to move forward with their goals and aspirations and become a part of their community in a naturally occurring way. This process has the added benefit of shifting assumptions and prejudices that some members of the community may have of people with difference. They are able to engage one on one and have the opportunity to see the value of the individual. Volunteers play a critical role in working and supporting individuals depending on the aspiration and interests of our clients. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or speaking to Avalon about whether we are the right service for you please contact us now and we will make a time to meet you.

DISCOVER HOW WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Avalon (BOP) Incorporated walks alongside individuals with disability to support them to live everyday lives in every day places. Committed to the philosophy of working with individuals to live a life that they value, in their own communities, Avalon is moving forward into a dynamic and collaborative future. By engaging and working with whanau, friends, support services, volunteers and the community, together we can create sustainable change and enable all individuals to live a good life!

Retirement living

and care at its best!

T

he Bob Owens Retirement Village is named in honour of one of Tauranga’s most respected leaders. Sir Robert Owens, the founder and president of Owens Group, made an enormous contribution to civic affairs in the Bay of Plenty as well as the port and the business sector. His extensive achievements include serving three terms as the Mayor of Tauranga, Chairman of Air New Zealand, and New Zealand Business Hall of Fame. But the culmination of recognition of his services to the country came in 1997 when, in

the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, he became a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit. Located on Carmichael Road in Bethlehem, the village is conveniently located close to the Bethlehem Town Centre. The village features panoramic views of the Mount, the harbour and across the neighbouring reserves. Bob Owens offers the full range of living and care options, from independent townhouse and serviced apartment living, through to resthome, hospital and dementia care. This is so important for those residents

whose needs increase, but value the friendships they have made and want to stay in the same, familiar community. It’s also great for couples to be able to stay together, should they need to have different levels of care. The resort-style facilities include an all-weather bowling green, and a Village Centre with a heated indoor swimming pool and spa, gymnasium, internal atrium, beauty and hairdressing salon, library and internet services, dining room, bar, lounges, shop and even a movie theatre! There is so much for residents to enjoy, including village events and outings.

With daily activities catered towards different levels of care –there’s something for everyone from happy hours and entertainers, to a game of bowls – played the traditional way or on a chair for the less physically able. Residents can also enjoy regular outings in the village van. Life in the village is certainly very social! Living at Bob Owens Retirement Village isn’t about slowing down, it’s about having time to do so much more! For more information on the options available at Bob Owens, call Janet on 07 579 2519, or visit www.bobowens.co.nz.

For all

denture needs...

T

he high cost of dental work these days means that for many people, the best and most affordable option is a full or partial denture.

If you’re in the situation where your teeth are no longer doing the job and you need to find an affordable solution, dental clinician Bertie Matthews can help. Trained in South Africa and New Zealand (Otago University) and with over three decades of experience, Bertie designs, constructs and manufactures dentures direct to the public. He’s been working in New Zealand for 15 years, and until he moved to Tauranga recently, was based in Katikati for eight years. Whatever your denture needs, you can phone him for a free assessment that could transform your life, as well as your smile. “If you need a partial denture or you’re considering a full denture, I inform you of the process that is to be followed, which may involve a dentist for any extraction(s) and an oral health certificate. I offer a number of denture

options which are priced accordingly,” he says. “Because I work directly with my clients, they always get what they want, whether it be a partial denture made of plastic, a flexible or metal-framed partial denture or a full set of dentures. “In the case of implant retained dentures, I work closely with the oral surgeon and go through the procedure step by step with the client.” Bertie offers an emergency service and specialises in after-hours and weekend work, handy for those who can’t afford time off work. A Head

Start on Creativity

She moved to Gisborne from Ohio, USA in 2008 without knowing anyone. In New Zealand, without her art supplies, she picked up what she had at hand – a camera, and she began to explore. Laura found that she could express herself creatively. Now her art has taken a direction far greater than Laura could have ever anticipated. “I saw this as an opportunity to expand my skills, techniques and perhaps range of media.” Her art has gone from strength to strength since starting the programme. She took black and

white portraits of individuals around her community, then printed the large portraits until she had enough of them to cover a wall. This ongoing project has been received with much excitement from the public. Her ‘Inside Out Tairawhiti’ exhibition celebrates creativity that is alive and flourishing in a remote and geographically isolated place. The results are quirky, bold and dramatic. Laura takes delight in coming on-site to Wellington for block classes and exhibitions. “I have the most excellent, awesome mentor! As an off-site student, that connection is what really makes the programme soar for me. To anyone thinking of enrolling I’d say ‘go for it! You’ll love it!”

aura Scheper, from Gisborne, is no stranger to creativity. An already established art career made the decision to study art and creativity at The Learning Connexion a natural one. “Studying from home made learning accessible for me. There are NO regrets.” Taking a chance on the unexpected is nothing new to Laura.

The day my youngest child started school, I went back to school myself. I started at The Learning Connexion that day. – Laura Scheper.

My name is Dr. Hamish MacMillan, (Chiropractor) and along with my colleagues Dr Leon Crowley and Dr Laura Robinson, (Chiropractors), I have been helping people with hip pain and other health problems for more than 10 years in Tauranga. Over the past 10 years since opening Oceanside Family Chiropractic, I’ve seen many people with hip and groin pain improve significantly and often leave the office pain free.

Together with my colleagues Dr Lily Baigent, Dr Laura Robinson and Dr Leon Crowley (chiropractors), we’ve seen hundreds of carpal tunnel sufferers leave my office pain free in the past 10 years. Many patients tell me they wished they’d found chiropractic sooner. Suffering for years was agonizing for them. I want to let you know there is real hope…

Dr. Susan MacKinnon, professor of surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, said the high failure rate of surgery has caused her to rethink the cause of carpal tunnel syndrome. She states even after surgery problems like neck stiffness and shoulder pain persist in patients.

How we became experts

and how that can help you

O

ur feet are the foundation of our bodies, and feet can be a key part in the puzzle of resolving pain in the lower limbs. Our Podiatrists are keen to raise awareness on how important feet are, especially when there are symptoms such as leg, foot and back pain, or an alignment problem in posture. Foot Mechanics has been a local health provider in the Bay of Plenty for 20 years. We started here in Tauranga and now have clinics at the Mount, Whakatane, Rotorua and Taupo. We also have clinics around New Zealand but we are very proud of our BOP heritage. We have helped tens of thousands of people with foot and lower limb problems. We are chosen by a range of New Zealand’s elite athletes from across different sports codes. Most people want to know if we treat All Blacks. The answer to that is yes we do, and we are proud to be the Podiatrists who do the boot fittings for the NZ Super Rugby Teams. We have to be at an elite level of expertise ourselves to help these elite athletes.

I’ve told you about who we treat, so I can now tell you about how we stay at an elite level of expertise. It’s that expertise that will help you when you have a foot or lower limb problem. We do two things really well that keep our expertise at such a high level. The first thing we do is invest in our team. While working at Foot Mechanics, our Podiatrists receive more than double the required amount of continuing education. We bring world class researchers and clinicians from across the globe to New Zealand to educate and train our Podiatrists. Earlier this month, we brought Simon Bartold to one of our seminars. Simon was the lead researcher for Asics for over 20 years and currently works with elite athletes in Adelaide. Most of the technology used in Asics shoes are a result of Simon’s thinking and research direction. He trained our Podiatrists on the topics of sports medicine and injury prevention. The second thing we do is invest in the latest technology that helps us to understand biomechanical problems

and treat them. We use a piece of technology called RS Scan. RS Scan enables our Podiatrists to “see the invisible” by showing the forces moving through the foot as you stand, walk and run. This is significant, as many times injury and pain are the result of forces that can’t be seen with other assessment tools such as gait analysis. The combination of expertise and up-to-date technology go hand in hand. We wrap our expertise and technology into a clinical service called a biomechanical assessment. Our biomechanical assessment includes an examination of the patient while non-weight bearing, standing, walking and running. This is followed up with a detailed treatment plan being presented to the patient. A shoe evaluation

is also performed so that recommendations for suitable footwear or sports shoes can be made. We have worked with Smiths Sports Shoes for 20 years here in Tauranga as our footwear fitting partners. They do an exceptional job for us. So that’s a little about how we have become experts and how our expertise and technology can help you when you have a foot or lower limb problem.

Research Anyone with a chronic illness will know that current treatments do not always provide a good answer. There is a need to keep searching for better medicines and better solutions. Have you ever wondered where new Medicines come from? How does anyone know they are safe? Clinical trials are the key and you could get involved. What is a clinical trial? Before any new medication can be marketed it must be approved by a regulatory body such as the Federal Drug Administration (FDA). Evidence is required to show it is both safe and that it works as well or better than standard treatments. The process by which this evidence is acquired is a very regulated one and involves performing clinical trials.

Who are we? We employ specially trained doctors and nurses to care for and supervise volunteers taking part in clinical trials of new medications for a variety of conditions. We have over 12 years experience and have Units in both Wellington and Tauranga. We have an excellent reputation nationally and internationally.

What do we do? We recruit volunteers to take part in clinical trials. We see the volunteers at regular intervals to monitor their condition and ensure the safety of the new medication. Most of our trials are being conducted in dozens and sometimes hundreds of units

around the World on hundreds and sometimes thousands of volunteers. You could be part of this – for yourself and for others.

Is it safe? We only undertake trials with medications that have already been tested for safety elsewhere in what are called ‘Phase 1 studies’. Of course we monitor everyone closely to see that the medication is well tolerated.

How much time is involved? Most studies involve visits to the unit of 1-2 hours each time, sometimes shorter, sometimes longer. Every study is different. Visits may be every week, or every month or sometimes every 3 months. The study may run for 6 months to a year, and sometimes for several years.

Will I be paid? Every volunteer is reimbursed for travelling and incidental expenses. If the trial involves a lot of commitment and time, payment will be made for this. Every trial is different in this respect.

Is parking available? Access to our units is easy. Free parking is available at each of our units.

Get involved

Why should I consider being involved? You will be helping others by trialling tomorrow’s medications today.

You will learn more about your condition You will obtain access to new and hopefully better medications at no cost You will receive free regular checkups – blood tests, breathing tests, ECG, physical examinations You will help improve the health of future generations You will receive advice on diet, exercise and managing your medications Treatment of your condition may improve

Warning. Don’t call any chiropractor until you have read this message

Attention Back & Neck Pain Sufferers

I have some serious “inside” information …If you or a loved one suffer from back or neck pain! This information may unlock the agonising mystery to your back or neck pain and show you a way to get back the life you deserve.

Research

Dr Heidi Haavik is a neurophysiologist and chiropractor at the NZ School of Chiropractic in Auckland. She is leading the world in human neurophysiology and has written a best selling book ‘The Reality Check’, which is about the effects of chiropractic care, the benefits of helping the nerve system, improving function and our emotional state. So if you suffer from colds, flus, and other sicknesses, you’ll have more resistance and a greater change to fight them off. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that.

A life where you are free from pain. Where you have mobility to do what you please. Even to bend down and tie your shoelaces without fear. A life where you can sleep at night without tossing and turning. A life where you can practically spring out of bed…And not labour with throbbing soreness. That’s no way to start the day! A life where you can pick up and play with your kids without worrying whether your back or neck is going to leave you agonising on the ground and to help slow down the aging process. My name is Quentin Dive. I have been practising in Tauranga since 1990. I love the city and the people. I have been involved with the Chiropractic Association of NZ for 30 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies…and the elderly. To famous athletes who are household names. I have been responsible for my own ‘miracles’ too. It’s nice my clients think of me as a ‘miracle worker’, but it isn’t the truth. The truth of the matter is, I’ve never healed anybody or anything. Yes, you’re reading that correctly. What I do is perform a specific adjustment to remove any nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself!

Back into life Prior to starting my chiropractic care plan with Quentin Dive, I suffered discomfort and daily pain in my back, shoulder and neck. I had low energy levels and frequent bouts of depression. Although I originally started Chiropractic care because of my constant back, neck and shoulder pain, I was surprised and pleased to find that as well as the decreased pain and discomfort at the end of each day, I noticed that my overall health was better and I was generally happier within two months of starting my Chiropractic care plan. I have now been adjusted by Quentin for over a year. I stand straighter and taller, I no longer live with daily pain, my recovery from injuries is faster, and I feel healthier and happier than I have in years. Thank you Quentin and the team at Bay Chiropractic Centre for all your help in guiding me through my journey to recovery. I have no hesitation in recommending you to anyone with physical pain or health and wellbeing issues. P Coleman

Hi. My name is Bull Allan Quentin has been instrumental in keeping my body in an optimal state since my rugby career. His ability to detect and rectify imbalances has been invaluable and has helped me immensely. Without regular chiropractic care I wouldn’t have the quality of life that I enjoy, when I do have back problems Quentin gets me back on track and has helped improve the mobility in both my back and neck over the last 10 years.

orthopaedic tests. After that, I have you lie down and I ‘palpate’ (feel) for any areas of muscle spasm along each of the 24 vertebrae. Muscles go into spasm to protect the nerve and this can lead to pain. If these tests are positive I then take four Xrays of your spine to determine its condition. If the spine has subluxated, it loses its normal curves. If the curves are lost, the spine decays and you experience pain yet again. When I look at your X-rays, I look at every single one of your 24 vertebrae, your sacrum and your hips. I look to see what the angles of your neck and lumbar curves are, compare that to a healthy spine, and then put those results into a chart. I also look to see if you carry your neck or lumbar spine too far forward or backward. I look for any areas of disc collapse and any areas of decay and assess what ‘phase’ they are in. The last thing I do with your x-rays is assess, from the front to back view, and look for any shifts from normal in the cervical, thoracic, lumbar and pelvic areas. I then will provide a specific exercise programme designed from the x-rays.

When I’ve finished taking the x-rays I then give you a posture card, to check if other members of your family have subluxations. It’s often hereditary.

My amazing limited offer If you’re currently suffering from back, or any other type of pain, I’d like to extend to you a very limited special offer to come into my clinic and receive my entire new patient exam and X-Rays, normally valued at $265 for only $77. But before I tell you details of this special offer and what my new patient exam involves, I must be very clear about who precisely should respond to this. Not everyone qualifies for this service and I’ve found the people that benefit most from chiropractic have five key characteristics. Here they are: 1 You suffer from back pain, neck pain, leg, arm pain, sore shoulders, headaches and fatigue. 2 You want to sincerely improve you general health and well being 3 You wish to possess more energy 4 You are prepared to make appropriate lifestyle changes, not only in your physical health but in other areas of your life (eg emotional and dietary) 5 You are willing to make a genuine commitment to sustaining these changes. People who don’t meet these criteria’s usually go back to experiencing their problems after a few months. Most often, the cause of these recurring problems is because the patient hasn’t made the necessary changes in other areas of their life to have a lasting effect. In other words it’s like taking a painkiller, and then continually banging your head against a brick wall! If you meet the criteria above and are within the first 43 people to phone my office you can have my entire new patient exam and X-Rays for only $77. Here’s what this means: First, I look at your posture. I look at key areas to determine what your posture looks like. Posture is the window to the spine, so if your posture is off centre, this is a good indicator of ‘subluxation’ (a shift in the spine choking the nerve signals). Next I do a ‘bilateral weight scale test’ to determine if you’re putting more weight on one side of the body than the other. This is often why people have ankle, knee, hip, and spinal joint pain. I then check cervical and lumbar ranges of motion, reflex tests and

And that’s it! All that for only $77. The new patient exam is complete. The next step is to present you with two reports. The first is called the Problem Report. This details precisely why you’re experiencing the pain. The second is called the Solution Report. This explains what we need to do to make your pain go away. At this stage you have a choice to continue working with me (if that’s what you need). Or, you can take this report to another chiropractor who can also help you. Either way, there is no obligation or pressure whatsoever to continue in an ongoing programme with me. Yours Sincerely, Dr Quentin Dive

Act Now Bookings are essential. You’ll need to phone one of my amazing assistants and organise an appointment. Our clinic is called Bay Chiropractic, situated at Second Ave Medical Centre, Tauranga. The phone number to call is 07 577 9779. And one more thing: in the unlikely event you feel this examination and x-rays isn’t worth at least five times what you’ve paid, just tell me and I will cheerfully refund your money. Just remember, this is a very limited offer. If you meet my criteria, suffer from pain and would like it go to away, you need my new patient programme. It’s normally $265 but you’ll only pay $77, if you’re within the first 43 people to phone. Delay and you could miss out. Call now and take advantage of this incredible offer! Remember there’s no financial risk. If you don’t feel the exam is worth five times the price, tell me and I’ll give you an immediate and unconditional refund. (Please mention this letter.)
