Bullying is not “child’s play”. Know the signs and make it stop. B ullying is not just a problem for a minority of children; it is a widespread problem that can affect one in three young people. Research with young people revealed that there are common signs that young people will display if they are the victim of bullying or something is causing them distress. It’s important to note that some children may show one sign - whereas others may show a combination of signs. The important thing as a trusted adult is to know what these signs are, and thereafter to know what you can do to help make
the bullying stop (and not make it worse). This resource booklet features all this information, as well as some helpful links for more support and advice.

Is my child being bullied? The ultimate goal is to make the bullying stop. Here's some useful guidelines on how you can support your child and resolve the bullying...
Start a conversation and don't interrupt them. Praise them for talking to you. Being bullied is not an easy thing to admit to. Tell them how glad you are they talked to you about it and let them know you are really sorry this is happening to them. Try not to interrupt and ask them to tell you about what’s happening in their own words.
Take it seriously, believe them and reassure them that you will sort it out together. Listen without judging. Children will have many fears, for example that you will think they are ‘weak’ or will be angry with them. Be sensitive to your child’s feelings and reassure them that it is not their fault that they are being bullied. Be careful not to show any anger you might be feeling. It’s important to listen well, believe the child, be supportive and most of all be patient, some parents have patiently waited for weeks for their children to talk through an incident. Let them know that bullying happens to a lot of kids but that NEVER makes it right. No one deserves to be bullied. Some parents don’t take it seriously as they think their child is attention seeking – this is a myth if the child is prepared to talk to you about the situation.
Make a plan together and make a commitment to make it stop, however long it takes. It’s not up to them to stop the bullying. It is not the responsibility of the child to change what is happening to them - so on that basis, work together to sort it out and agree on what needs to happen. Ask your child what they want to happen next. Can you both agree to some first steps? It is important that you work together and that your child is happy with things you do to help. If you do things behind your child’s back they may stop telling you things. Stick with it until the matter is resolved.

How to help your child 1. Talk to your child and find out what happened.
2. Ensure your child knows what’s expected
If your child has been accused of bullying or you suspect bullying, talk to them and ask questions; if there has been a complaint and it is genuine, then accept responsibility for their behaviour together. Find out exactly what they’ve been doing and their reasons. Find out if their friends are also bullying. Ask how you can help. Your child may be having social or emotional problems they find hard to handle. Some children may feel pressured to take part in bullying to be accepted or so they don’t get bullied themselves.
•Calmly explain that bullying behaviour is not acceptable. Explain how bullying affects others such as victims, bystanders and the school environment. •Avoid approaching your child in a threatening way. •Remember your focus is on the bad behaviour you are seeking to change. •Provide clear, consistent consequences for bullying.

stop bullying 3. Try to get to the root cause of the bullying •Just because your child did something hurtful doesn’t mean he’s a bad kid or that you’re a failure as a parent. •Sometimes children are struggling within their peer group to get what they want – which may be acknowledgement or attention or control. •Show them more positive ways to act. Provide praise when you see them improving in their behaviour.
