Library Closures We will be closed for the Queen’s Birthday Public Holiday, Monday 10 June. Out of hours returns chutes are available at all branches for your convenience.

Library upgrade works starting August 2019 Sandringham Library will be expanded within the current footprint of the building located on the corner of Waltham St, Abbott St and Chalmers Avenue. The upgrade will create flexible study spaces, quiet reading areas and better meeting and program facilities. Construction works will be mostly internal with the building retaining its external appearance. The library service will run from a temporary facility at 92 Station Street Sandringham with a small collection of popular reads, DVDs and children’s books available for loan. Customers will also be able to order items online for collection at the pop-up library. Some of our regular programs such as book chats, book clubs and story time will continue. Construction is expected to be completed by July 2020.

Look! Up in the Sky The Royal Flying Doctor Service Program, Look! Up in the Sky, is an interactive and engaging session featuring a life sized model of a Flying Doctor plane – an aeromedical simulator. The Aeromedical Simulator is fitted with a cockpit, complete with avionics and flight simulator. The Simulator is fully equipped with stretchers, communications, oxygen, suction and the equipment used by the doctors, nurses and pilots of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. You will hear stories, land a plane in the outback, rescue a patient and most importantly, climb on board, strap yourself in and enjoy this unique experience. With an introduction by acclaimed children’s author George Ivanoff who will tell us about how he was inspired by the adventures of the RFDS to write a picture book and a series of children’s novels. Naidoc Week Mabu Mabu is a saying in the Torres Strait that means 'help yourself' – it's how we welcome people to a feast or dinner and is always followed by a joyous celebration of food and family. Join chef and Torres Strait Islander Nornie Bero for an immersive journey through the incredible native ingredients she uses every day at her deli at the South Melbourne Market. Nornie will be hosting two masterclasses in native spices followed by a cooking demonstration and tastings that show how easy it is to use Australian bush foods in your everyday cooking. The Carp Productions 2019 Book Week Show The 2019 Book Week theme is “Reading is my super power.” Carp Productions will perform an interactive show based on this year’s Book Week nominees. This session will take a fun look at the nominated books. Children are strongly encouraged to participate in the reading and acting out of the stories. “Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! Memoir Writing with best-selling author Vikki Petraitis will help people who are writing or thinking about writing their memoirs. This short course over two sessions will include components such as: where to start, what to include, how to structure your memoir, and how to write descriptively. There will be lots of tips and some opportunities to share your work with others.

How to earn money writing for a living – Workshop

Open Poetry Reading with Brian Nankervis

Carole Goldsmith, is an international journalist, who has been writing professionally for over 25 years.

Join the fabulous Brian Nankervis, for a Bayside Library Service poetry afternoon.

Carole will provide guidance on the many ways of writing for a living; the business side of writing, earning potential, pay-rates, invoicing and getting paid. This practical six-hour course over two sessions, will also cover writing and pitching article ideas to editors, interview techniques, writing markets, blogs, speeches, public relations / web content, e-books and writing groups to join. The Library runs a number of training classes on a variety of topics relating to iPhones, iPads, Windows 10 computers and the Library's online resources.

All our iPhone & iPad classes require that your device is using iOS 12 or later, which can be installed on any of these models.

Classes are held in the training room at Brighton Library (14 Wilson Street, Brighton) and in the small hall at Beaumaris Library (96 Reserve Road, Beaumaris).

This 2 hour class will demonstrate how to search for your ancestors in Australia and around the world using a wide range of free online websites.

This class will discuss changes in the appearance and features of Windows 10 (compared to earlier versions), and teach you about Live Tiles, the Start menu, locating installed Apps (such as OneNote), all tray icons including Microsoft Edge (Internet Explorer), File Explorer, the App Store, Notification & Action Centre. You'll also learn about the benefits of a Microsoft account and free cloud storage (OneDrive).
